- 0:12printed material. Today we will be reading from various books
- 0:17on Father's Day. Your reader today is Diane. We will
- 0:22begin with the book The Greatest Father's Day of All.
- 0:26It was published by HarperCollins Publisher Australia. It has a
- 0:32copyright year of twenty thirteen and the author of the
- 0:35book is Anne Mangan. Dad hid deep under the duna,
- 0:40excited it was Father's Day. Mom and the kids were outside.
- 0:44Something special was underway. Dad pretended to be fast asleep.
- 0:49He even began to snore, waiting for Mom and the
- 0:52children to come bursting through the door. Dad was eager
- 0:57first breakfast, but the kids and Mom were late and
- 1:00toast and bacon. He thought this is going to be great,
- 1:04But as Tommy began to grumble, so he jumped out
- 1:07of bed made his way to the kitchen to sneak
- 1:11a quick slice of bread. Mom came in with the washing.
- 1:15Dad was sure she say surprise. Then the kids would
- 1:19yell it's Father's Day with excitement in their eyes, but
- 1:23instead she asked him nicely if he could please fix
- 1:27that door, reminding him he'd been asked to repair it
- 1:31once before. Mom expected him to grumble, but he ran
- 1:35outside instead. Dad was sure that his presence must be
- 1:39hidden in the shed. In spite of all Dad searching,
- 1:44not a present did he see. Upset and disappointed, he
- 1:48went in to watch TV. Mom noticed Dad's unhappy face
- 1:52and asked if he was okay. Dad, in his sad voice,
- 1:56said you've forgotten Father's Day. Mom smiled and the children giggled.
- 2:03She kissed him upon the cheek. Father's Day isn't today,
- 2:07It's not until next week. Dad hid deep under the douna.
- 2:12It was finally next week, making moss of snoring noises,
- 2:17he waited for the door to creak. It's Father's Day.
- 2:21The children yelled as they handed him a plate with
- 2:24eggs and toast and bacon. It was more than worth
- 2:27the weight. Dad opened all of his presence, a great ball,
- 2:32a T shirt and mug, putting the shirt on straight away.
- 2:35He tried not to look snug as Mom went to
- 2:39clean the kitchen and the kids went out to play.
- 2:42Dad's news upon the couch he had the greatest father Day.
- 2:48Our next book is titled A Father's Day thank You,
- 2:51and it was published by Albert Whitman and Company, and
- 2:55it has a copyright ear of two thousand and seven.
- 2:58The author is Janet Harvey did not know what to draw.
- 3:03He dangled his crown above a blank sheet of paper.
- 3:06Just then his sister tiptoed down the hallway. What are
- 3:09you doing, asked Tarvy. Tomorrow's father's sake. And I got
- 3:14Dad's favorite present, said Lorie Anne. How do you know
- 3:18it's his favorite? Asked Tarvey. Follow me, whispered l Anne.
- 3:24They could hear Dad in the kitchen. He always cooked
- 3:27breakfast with the radio on. He cracked eggs and hummed
- 3:30a tune. He flipped pancakes and cranked up the volume,
- 3:35and when the bacon was crispy, his big booming voice
- 3:38would fill the house with psalm. By the time breakfast
- 3:41was ready, it was either cover your years or go
- 3:44sit down and eat. Lorie Anne pulled Harvey into their
- 3:48parents' closet. See Dad's favorite present, she said. Every year
- 3:54I give Dad a tie, and every year he says
- 3:57a tie, How wonderful? Can always use another tie? Then
- 4:01he gives me a hug and says thank you, and
- 4:04I say you're welcome. After breakfast, Harvey play tag with
- 4:08the dog until he tripped over a skateboard and cut
- 4:11his knee. Dad scooped him up and carried him inside.
- 4:15Might need to operate, muttered Dad as he handed Harvey
- 4:19a popsicle. Then, as he cleaned up the Dad told
- 4:22such silly stories that Harvey forgot to cry. Harvey thought
- 4:26Dad might like a popsicle for Father's Day, but figured
- 4:30if he wrapped one up it would probably melt. After lunch,
- 4:34Harvey wanted to ride his bicycle, but his tire was flat.
- 4:38His older brother, Martin, took him down to the basement
- 4:41to look for the pump. What are you getting dead
- 4:45for Father's Day? Asked Harvey. The present dad loves best,
- 4:49a answered Martin. Are you giving him a tie? Why
- 4:53would I give Dad a tie? Follow me and I'll
- 4:56show you what Dad likes best, says Martin. Harvey followed
- 5:00his brother to the storage room. See the nails, said Martin.
- 5:04Dad loves nails. Every year I give him a box
- 5:07of nails, and every year he says, a box of nails.
- 5:11How special can always use another box of nails. Then
- 5:15he gives me a hug and says thank you, and
- 5:18I say you're welcome. Harvey cannot fix his tire alone.
- 5:23Luckily Dad woke up from this Saturday afternoon snooze. When
- 5:27Harvey hollered, Dad, did somebody call for a bicycle repair?
- 5:32Answered Dad. Harvey held the handlebars while Dad filled the
- 5:37tire with air. When Harvey pedaled away, Dad stayed and
- 5:40watched to make sure the tire was safe. That evening,
- 5:44Harvey thought about Father's Day again when he stepped out
- 5:47of the tub and Dad wrapped him up in a big,
- 5:50warm towel. Harvey went looking for his older sister, Nadine.
- 5:54She was in the family room dancing to music. Harvey
- 5:57could not hear. Nadine yelled Harvey. Nadine pulled off her headphones.
- 6:03What are you giving Dad for Father's Day? The President
- 6:07he looks forward to all year? Nadine replied, Are you
- 6:10giving him a box of nails? Asked Harvey, Why would
- 6:14I give him a box of nails? Said Nadine. Open
- 6:17the cabinet. I'll show you what Dad likes best. Harvey
- 6:21opened the family room cabinet, see said Nadine, Dad looks
- 6:25forward to getting golf balls. Every year. I give Dad
- 6:28a box of golf balls, and every year he says,
- 6:31golf balls. How thoughtful. I can always use more golf
- 6:35balls than He gives me a hug and says thank you,
- 6:38and I reply, you're welcome. Harvey trudged up the stairs
- 6:43to bed. All the wonderful, special, thoughtful gifts were taken.
- 6:47What was left to make Dad say thank you? Who's
- 6:51interest in a bedtime story? Asked Dad? Me? Me? Cried Harvey,
- 6:56diving into bed. When the story was over, Dad smiled
- 6:59and said, but I love you. He kissed Harvey good night.
- 7:03Harvey sat in the dark. He was not thinking about
- 7:06Father's Day. He was thinking about his dad. Harvey crept
- 7:10out of bed, picked up a crown and started to draw.
- 7:14On Father's Day, Laurie In handed Dad a gift wrapped box.
- 7:18What could this be? Asked Dad? Opening as present a tie?
- 7:23How wonderful, I can always use another tie. Then he
- 7:26gave laurie In a hug and said thank you. You're welcome,
- 7:29she said. Martin gave Dad a box wrapped in newspaper.
- 7:34Dad took, shook the box and whispered, I wonder what's
- 7:38in here? He opened it A box of nails. How special,
- 7:43I can always use another box of nails. Then he
- 7:47gave Martin a hug and said, thank you. You're welcome,
- 7:50said Martin. Nadan gave Dad a bag tied with a bow.
- 7:57What could be in here, asked Dad, as he hide
- 8:00the bow? Golf falls. How thoughtful, I can always use
- 8:04more golf balls than He gave Nadina hug and said
- 8:07thank you. You're welcome, she replied. Everybody looked at Harvey.
- 8:12He pulled a piece of paper from behind his back.
- 8:16Harvey held out his picture and said, thank you for
- 8:20being my dad. Dad gave Harvey a hug, and then
- 8:24he said you're welcome. Our next book is called The
- 8:29Best Father's Day Present Ever, and it was published by G. P.
- 8:34Putnam's Sons, a division of Penguin Young Readers Group. It
- 8:38has a copywriter of two thousand and seven and the
- 8:42author is Christine Loomness. It was almost Father's Day, Langley
- 8:49had not found the perfect present for his dad. Again,
- 8:53your father doesn't care about expensive gifts, Langley's mother said,
- 8:57for the five hundredth time, make him some. He'll like that.
- 9:01But everything Lanley ever made was a disaster. One year,
- 9:05he painted a picture of his dad's favorite spot by
- 9:07the stream. It looked like a bluish purplish monster, dripping
- 9:11blue ooze from its lumpy head. Then there was the
- 9:15picture frame, stuck with the gluey macaroni. Very creative, his
- 9:19teacher had said. Last year, Langley made a paperweight for
- 9:23his dad to take to work. It looked good. Unfortunately
- 9:27his dad didn't have a desk at work. I love it,
- 9:31mister Snell had said, but Langley didn't believe him. He
- 9:35spent the rest of the Dayana's room staring in the
- 9:38mirror to see if he looked as dumb as he felt.
- 9:42This year was different. Langley had an allowance. He was
- 9:46thinking of what he might buy, a bowling ball, a
- 9:49bow tie, a hiking boot. When Buster Squirrel ran up,
- 9:53We're going to mister Pocket's store. Want to come? Eureka,
- 9:58Langley's worries were over. Mister Pockets carried the coolest gifts,
- 10:03gadgets and dewdads. Langley would find the best Father's Day
- 10:07present ever. Langley counted his money. When he looked up,
- 10:12Buster was far down the road. Everyone else passed him too. Sorry,
- 10:16can't wait, Chloe Rabbit called as she leaped by. Gotta
- 10:19get to mister Pocket's store. Tod toe hop flopped pasted
- 10:24with the waves. Soon Lanley's friends reappeared coming the other way.
- 10:29Look what I got, Buster said, point a strange contraption
- 10:33out of a bag. What is it, Langley asked, A
- 10:36turbo blaster, car washer and ice cream maker. Lanley wondered
- 10:40if his dad would like that. I got the last one,
- 10:43Buster said. Chloe had a super duper goff O matic
- 10:47home ball washer, and Tod's gift was professionally wrapped in
- 10:51eye catching colored paper. It's the amazing Auto Select sports
- 10:56only remote control with batteries included, Todd said proudly. Langley
- 11:01raced up to mister Pocket's store, a large sign stopped
- 11:05him cold in his tracks. Closed early for Father's Day weekend,
- 11:10Langley was stunned. Tomorrow the dads would be out polishing
- 11:14their cars and making ice cream or washing golf balls
- 11:18until they sparkled, or amazing their friends with the sports
- 11:22station's only remote control with batteries included. Except Langley's dad,
- 11:28I'm such a loser, Langley welled. Sadly, he turned away
- 11:34from the store and hit it back the way he
- 11:36had come. Then he spotted something in the road. It
- 11:39was a lilac colored rock with perfect white circle round it.
- 11:43Dad says circle rocks are good luck. Langley sniffed, placing
- 11:47the rock in his pack. Oddly, he felt better. He
- 11:51started home at a snail's pace, which is why he
- 11:55noticed the cups leave, holding a perfect puddle of water
- 11:58that reflected a circle of bride blue sky. Dad would
- 12:01like this, Langley thought. A short while later, a speckled
- 12:05eggshell caught his eye. A ride of chirping made him
- 12:09look up at the neat twig nest. Welcome to the world,
- 12:13Langley called to three little birds, because that's what his
- 12:16dad would have done. When he stopped to rest, a
- 12:19large weap at the end of the log sparkled in
- 12:22the coppery sun. Suddenly Langley knew just what to give
- 12:26his dad. The next morning, he placed his gift on
- 12:30the table. It wasn't a turboblaster car washer, an ice
- 12:33cream maker, or a super duper goffle Matic home bawwasher
- 12:38or amazing Auto Select Sports only remote control with batteries
- 12:43included it wasn't professionally wrapped in eye catching colored paper.
- 12:47What's this, mister Snell said as he opened the small,
- 12:51oddly shaped parcel covered an oak paper with an X
- 12:55Marx on it. Inside was a lilac colored rock and
- 12:59a note saying you are invited to a special walk
- 13:03at one o'clock today, Lanley Snell, treasure hunter and finder
- 13:08PS bring your camera. Lanley took his dad to see
- 13:13the sparkling web. Together they called up to the three
- 13:17little birds. They drank from the dark cream dark green
- 13:21leaf with a puddle of bright blue sky, and Lanley
- 13:24pointed out exactly where he found the good luck rock.
- 13:27They took lots of pictures. It was a perfect day.
- 13:33As they turned into their shady yard, Langley asked, Dad,
- 13:38did you like your present? Mister Snell gave us son
- 13:41a great, big snaill hug. It was the best Father's
- 13:45Day present ever, and Langley knew that it was. Next
- 13:51book is called What Is Father's Day? And it was
- 13:55published by Sterling Publisher Company. It has a copyright year
- 14:00of two thousand and five and it was written by
- 14:03Harriet Zeifert. It's Father's Day, said Little Mouse's mother, Let's
- 14:10go to the store and by Daddy a present. What
- 14:13does Father's day, asked little Mouse. On Father's Day, said
- 14:17little Mouse's mother, we look for something Daddy would like,
- 14:21something that tells him we love him and appreciate him.
- 14:25Little Mouse, can you think of something for daddy. Maybe
- 14:29Daddy would like cheese, said little mouse. Maybe Daddy would
- 14:35like a hat, said little Mouse's mother. No, said little mouse.
- 14:39I know what daddy would like. Daddy would like a
- 14:43plant for the garden, said little mouse. What a good idea,
- 14:48said mommy. And I'll get him a trough and a
- 14:50watering can. Daddy, where are you, called little mouse? This
- 14:57is a special day, said daddy. Thank you for the
- 15:01lovely presence. Happy Father's Day. Our next story is titled
- 15:07Father's Day and it was published by HarperCollins Publishers. It
- 15:12has a copyright year of two thousand and five and
- 15:15the author is Anne Rockwell. Today we are making books
- 15:20about our dads. I'm writing about how my dad is
- 15:22so strong he can still carry me. I mus taus
- 15:27the sky when I'm up on his shoulders. Papa sings
- 15:30his favorite song to me. If my man has to
- 15:34work at night, Eveline said, it's the one is my man,
- 15:39and Papa saying to him. She hummed the tune and
- 15:43we stopped writing to listen. Missus Maddoff reminded us, remember
- 15:48we need quiet when we write. So Evelyn stopped humming
- 15:52and we went back to work. After a while, Evan
- 15:55raised his hand. How do you spell skillet, he asked
- 15:59Missus Maddoff. She said, s K I L L E G.
- 16:04He erased something he written and wrote it again. I
- 16:07was sure he was writing about the camping trip he
- 16:09and his dad went on, just the two of them.
- 16:12Evan told me that they slept in a tent and
- 16:14cooked bacon and eggs and a skillet. Jessica chewed on
- 16:18the end of her pencil. I don't know who to
- 16:21write about, she whispered. I have two fathers, my dad,
- 16:25who lives in Texas, and lou who lives here with
- 16:28me and my mom. Write about both of them. I said, Hey,
- 16:33why didn't I think of that? She said. When it
- 16:36was time to read what we written, Charlie went first.
- 16:39My father is a terrific person. He has lots of friends,
- 16:42and I know why he never gets mad or loses
- 16:45his patience. He says he can't because when you're the
- 16:48pilot of a big jet plane, you always have to
- 16:51keep your cool. Jessica read next. I have two fathers
- 16:56and I love them both. My dad, Bradley, lives in Texas,
- 17:00knows all about horses. My stepfather, Lou has never even
- 17:04been on a horse. He always plays Giggle Bubs with
- 17:07me after work, even if he's tired. Sarah red, my
- 17:11father is great at everything, yes, everything in the world.
- 17:15He's such a great cook. He should be a chef
- 17:18on TV. You should taste his chocolate marshmallow minty fudge.
- 17:22It's delicious. Pablo held his paper close to his face.
- 17:27I feel so proud when my Pappy and I plays soccer.
- 17:30Peppy shows me how to kick and dribble. Every time
- 17:33I practice with him, I get better. Pappy plays on
- 17:37a team in town with his friends. He says that
- 17:40one day I'll be a better player with him. Kate said,
- 17:44I wrote a poem for my dad. Is that okay?
- 17:47Of course, said missus Madoff. Kate read her poem, which went,
- 17:52Daddy taught me to dive and to find a bee hot.
- 17:55When I caught three shiny fish, we put them in
- 17:58a yellow dish. For a long time, I drew pictures
- 18:01of me in a bright pink room. Mitchiko said. I
- 18:05told my father how much I wanted a bright pink room.
- 18:08One day we went to the hardware store, and now
- 18:11my dream has come true. My father and I painted
- 18:14my room summer rose because that's the color I picked.
- 18:19My dad reads all the time, Nicholas read. We like
- 18:23reading the same kind of books. After lunch, we took
- 18:27our stories to the publishing center. Mitschiko's mother was helping
- 18:31there that day. She printed copies for all the dads.
- 18:35On the Friday in June before Father's Day, we came
- 18:38to school with our dads. We gave them our books.
- 18:45All of a sudden, Amen and the Cowboy had got
- 18:48out of a pickup truck and ran to Jessica. Dad,
- 18:51I didn't know you were coming, she said, as they
- 18:54hugged each other. I wanted to surprise you, he said.
- 18:58Jessica had two days. It's At the Father's Day picnic,
- 19:02we had cupcakes and brownies. Sarah said the brownies were
- 19:05almost as good as the ones her dad makes. My
- 19:08dad read his book again and again. Each time he
- 19:12read it, he gave me a hugs. Our next book
- 19:17is titled Lama Lama Daddy's Day, and it was published
- 19:22by Penguin Young Readers, an imprint of Penguin Random House.
- 19:28It has a copyright of twenty twenty one and the
- 19:31author is Anna Doney. Nelly Knew and Daddy Knew are
- 19:36hanging out in their front yard. Nelly Knew practices tricks
- 19:39on her skateboard. This one is called an olie. Nelly
- 19:43Knew says, do you want to try? I suppose my
- 19:46chores can wait. Daddy New response. He puts on his
- 19:49helmet and grabs the skateboard. WHOA, says Daddy New. He
- 19:55loses his balance right away. You can practice with my
- 19:58skateboard anytime, says Nelly Knew. Thanks. Daddy New replies, maybe
- 20:03one day I'll have a skateboard of my own. Daddy
- 20:06New knows. As a bird fling overhead, I love birds.
- 20:10He says that one is called a finch. Nelly Knew
- 20:13whistles at it, but she needs more practice. Let's whistle together,
- 20:17Daddy Neu, says. Daddy Knew and Nellie Knew tried their
- 20:22best bird cause at the same time, the finch chirps
- 20:26back at them. After the bird flies away, Daddy New
- 20:30pulls out as to do list. That's a long list, Daddy,
- 20:34Nelly Nu says. Daddy nuw agrees, but before he can
- 20:37get back to his chores, Daddy New has to go
- 20:41to work at the bakery. Nelly Knew hiss and side
- 20:45with Mamma Knew. Tomorrow's Father's Day, right. Mama Nellie Knew asks,
- 20:49I want to do something special to surprise Daddy since
- 20:52he works so hard for all of us. I love
- 20:55that idea, Mommy Knu replies, just remember you have a
- 20:59playdate with Lama Lama soon. Right on, cue the doorbell rings, Hi,
- 21:05Lama Lama, Nellie Nus says, she welcomes her friend inside.
- 21:10Nellie Knu explains her Father's Day plan to Lama Lama.
- 21:13She wants to surprise Daddy Nu by finishing her playhouse,
- 21:17sences on his to do list. That's a good idea,
- 21:20Lama Lama replies, but can you both fit in there?
- 21:24Nellie New thinks, for a second, I guess finishing the
- 21:27playhouse is more of a gift for me than for Daddy.
- 21:31Nellie Knud says, with the frown, I have to figure
- 21:34out what I can do for his special Daddy's Day.
- 21:38In the kitchen, Lama Lama knows his daddy news and
- 21:41long to do list. That's it. Nelly News says, I
- 21:44can make Daddy a whole new to do list with
- 21:47only fun things on it for Father's Day. That is fantastic,
- 21:51one of the kind idea, Lama Nus says, Baby Newman giggles.
- 21:56He agrees. After lunch, Lama Lama helps Nellie New come
- 22:00up with ideas for the to do list. He suggests
- 22:03building something for Daddy New. Daddy New loves birds. Nelly
- 22:07Nw says, I can make him a bird house so
- 22:10birds will come visit him. Daddy's car cout sure use
- 22:14the scrub. Mama New hents we can watch his big
- 22:17red truck together. Nelly Knu responds. While Nellie Nu comes
- 22:22up with more possibilities. La Malama tries a skateboard trick
- 22:26of his own. Wow, doing an Olie is hard, he says.
- 22:30That gives Nelly Neu a great idea. Daddy said he
- 22:34liked to have a skateboard of his own someday, Nelly
- 22:37nuor in the verse, can we get Daddy his own
- 22:39skateboard it's a big present, but he would love that.
- 22:43Nelly Mama Nu replies, let's do it. Daddy says, it's
- 22:48not a special day without a special cake. Nelly New says.
- 22:52La Malama points out that Daddy Neu is a baker.
- 22:55Does that mean he bake his own cake? Maybe we
- 22:58can make bake ones for him. Nellie Knu replies, better
- 23:02write all these ideas down on the fun to do list.
- 23:06With the list finished, Mama Nu takes Nelly New and
- 23:08Lama Lama shopping. They pick up supplies to make a
- 23:11bird house, ingredients to make a cake, and a brand
- 23:14new skateboard. Nellie Knu is ready to celebrate the best
- 23:19Father's Day ever. Back home, Lama Mama helps Nellie Neu
- 23:23mix the cake better than they watch it rise in
- 23:26the oven. Success the cake turns out perfectly. Once the
- 23:31cake is finished, it's time for La Malma to head home.
- 23:34Thanks for everything, Nelly New says, I know you'll have
- 23:37a blast with your daddy. Lama Lama replies, good luck.
- 23:42The next morning, Nelly Nu waits for her dad in
- 23:44the kitchen. I have something very important to tell you,
- 23:47she says. You have a new to do list. And
- 23:51we need to have this done today. Better get started,
- 23:54Daddy New replies. Nellie Nu jumps up from her chair.
- 23:58But wait, she said, this isn't a normal to do list,
- 24:02It's a fun list. Happy, happy Daddy's day. Outside, Daddy
- 24:07News sees his new bird house. For the first time,
- 24:10he and Nelly Knew whistled their bird calls together. The
- 24:13Finches chirt back at them from their new home. For
- 24:18the next item on the fun to do list, Nellie
- 24:20Knew and her daddy washes muddy truck. Nellie Nu jumps
- 24:24up on the hood to reach every spot. She even
- 24:27draws a picture of the two of them in the
- 24:29soap bubbles. Once the truck is shiny and clean, Nellie
- 24:33Knu presents her daddy with a carrot cake she baked. Wow,
