- 0:40races on earth. Marathons, ultra marathons, and
- 0:44triathlons. These are not just any races.
- 0:48There are special events where people test their limits, run or
- 0:51swim or bike for hours and sometimes even days.
- 0:55Are you ready to learn about these amazing challenges and the
- 0:59people who take them on? Let's get started.
- 1:02First, let's talk about marathons.
- 1:04A marathon is a long distance running race.
- 1:07The official distance for a marathon is 42.195 kilometers,
- 1:12which is about 26.2 miles. That's like running from one
- 1:16side of a big city to another, and then a little bit more.
- 1:19Marathons are held all over the world, and thousands of people
- 1:23take part in them every year. One of the most famous marathons
- 1:27is the Boston Marathon in the United States.
- 1:29It started all the way back in 1897, more than 100 years ago.
- 1:34The Boston Marathon is held every April on a day called
- 1:37Patriots Day. People from all over the world
- 1:40come to Boston to run this race. The course is known for its
- 1:44Heartbreak Hill, a long and steep uphill section that comes
- 1:47late in the race. Runners have to be really strong
- 1:50and determined to get through it.
- 1:52Boston is also famous because you have to qualify to enter.
- 1:56That means you have to run another marathon 1st and finish
- 1:59it in a fast time just to get a chance to run in Boston.
- 2:02Another world famous marathon is the London Marathon, held in the
- 2:06capital city of England. The first London Marathon took
- 2:09place in 1981. The course goes past many of
- 2:13London's famous landmarks like Big Ben, the Tower of London and
- 2:17the River Thames. It's a big event for both
- 2:20professional athletes and people who just want to run for fun or
- 2:23to raise money for charity. In fact, the London Marathon has
- 2:27helped raise hundreds of millions of pounds for different
- 2:30causes. Let's not forget the New York
- 2:32City Marathon. This is the largest marathon in
- 2:36the world with over 50,000 runners each year.
- 2:39The race starts on Staten Island, one of the cities 5
- 2:42boroughs, and goes through all 5 Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens,
- 2:47the Bronx and Manhattan. The finish line is in Central
- 2:51Park, a huge Green Park right in the middle of New York City.
- 2:55Crowds of people cheer for the runners and there's music and
- 2:58excitement all along the way. There's also the Berlin Marathon
- 3:02in Germany. This marathon is famous because
- 3:05many world records have been set there.
- 3:07The course is flat and fast, which means runners can go
- 3:10really quickly. The Berlin Marathon passes by
- 3:13the Brandenburg Gate, a very important landmark in Germany
- 3:17and in Japan. The Tokyo Marathon is another
- 3:20big event. It started in 2007, but it's
- 3:23already become one of the most popular marathons in Asia.
- 3:27The course takes runners through the busy streets of Tokyo, past
- 3:30tall buildings and ancient temples.
- 3:33Now let's move on to something even more extreme, the
- 3:36Ultramarathon. An Ultramarathon is any race
- 3:39longer than a regular marathon. So if a marathon is 42.195
- 3:45kilometers, an Ultramarathon could be 50 kilometers, 100
- 3:49kilometers, or even more. Some ultramarathons last for
- 3:53days. One of the most famous
- 3:55ultramarathons is the Comrades Marathon in South Africa.
- 3:59Even though it's called a marathon, it's actually about 89
- 4:02kilometers, which is more than twice as long as a regular
- 4:05marathon. The race goes between two
- 4:08cities, Durban and Peter Meritsburg.
- 4:10The route changes direction each year.
- 4:13Sometimes it's up from Durban to Peter Meritsburg, and sometimes
- 4:17it's down the other way. Thousands of runners take part
- 4:20and it's a big part of South African sports culture.
- 4:24Another famous ultra marathon is the Spartathlon in Greece.
- 4:28This race is about 246 kilometers long.
- 4:31That's about 152 miles. The route follows the path of
- 4:35the ancient Greek messenger Phaidipides, who is said to have
- 4:39run from Athens to Sparta in 490 BC to ask for help in a battle.
- 4:43The Spartaflon is known for its tough rules and strict time
- 4:46limits. Runners have to reach certain
- 4:49points along the course by a specific time or they have to
- 4:52stop. Did you know there's also an
- 4:54ultra marathon that takes place in one of the hottest places on
- 4:57Earth? It's called the Badwada 135 and
- 5:01it's held in Death Valley, CA during the summer.
- 5:04The race is 135 miles or about 217 kilometers, and the
- 5:09temperature can reach over 50°C, which is hotter than most ovens.
- 5:15Runners have to be very careful, drink lots of water and wear
- 5:19special clothing to protect themselves from the heat.
- 5:21There's also the Marathon Disables, which is French for
- 5:24Marathon of the Sands. This ultra marathon takes place
- 5:29in the Sahara Desert in Morocco, Africa.
- 5:32Runners travel about 250km / 6 days carrying all their food and
- 5:37equipment in backpacks. They run on sand, over dunes and
- 5:41across rocky ground. It's one of the toughest races
- 5:44in the world. Now let's talk about triathlons.
- 5:48A triathlon is a race that has three parts, swimming, biking
- 5:52and running all in one event. Triathlons come in different
- 5:56distances, but the most famous is the Ironman triathlon.
- 6:00In an Ironman, athletes swim 3.86 kilometers, bike 180.25
- 6:06kilometers and then run a full marathon 42.195 kilometers, all
- 6:13without stopping. That's a total of about 226
- 6:16kilometers, or 140.6 miles. The Iron Man World Championship
- 6:22is held every year in Kailua, Kona, HI.
- 6:25The race starts with a swim in the ocean, then a bike ride
- 6:28through hot lava fields and finally a run along the coast.
- 6:32The weather can be very hot and windy, making the race even
- 6:36harder. Only the best triathletes in the
- 6:38world get to compete in Kona and finishing the race is a huge
- 6:42achievement. There are also shorter
- 6:44triathlons like the Olympic Triathlon, which is the distance
- 6:47used in the Olympic Games. In the Olympics, athletes swim
- 6:521.5 kilometers, like 40 kilometers and run 10
- 6:55kilometers. The triathlon became an Olympic
- 6:58sport in the year 2000. Another popular triathlon event
- 7:02is the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in San Francisco, CA.
- 7:07In this race, athletes start by jumping off a boat near Alcatraz
- 7:11Island, which used to be a famous prison.
- 7:14They swim about 2.4 kilometers to the shore, then bike and run
- 7:18through the city's steep hills. The cold water and strong
- 7:21currents make the swim very challenging.
- 7:24In Australia, there's the Noosa Triathlon, which is one of the
- 7:27biggest triathlons in the world. It's held in a beautiful town
- 7:31called Noosa. With clear blue water and sunny
- 7:34weather, many people come to race and enjoy the fun festival
- 7:38atmosphere. Did you know that in some places
- 7:41there are even triathlons for kids?
- 7:43These are called kids triathlons or junior triathlons.
- 7:47The distances are much shorter, so young athletes can join in
- 7:51and have fun too. So why do people run marathons,
- 7:55ultra marathons or do triathlons?
- 7:58For some, it's about testing themselves and seeing what they
- 8:01can achieve. For others, it's a chance to
- 8:03travel, meet new friends, or raise money for charity.
- 8:07These races are not just about winning, they're about
- 8:10finishing, having fun and being part of something special.
- 8:14Let's recap what we've learned today.
- 8:17Marathons are long distance running races, about 42
- 8:20kilometers, and some of the most famous are in Boston, London,
- 8:24New York, Berlin and Tokyo. Ultra marathons are even longer
- 8:29and can be held in places like South Africa, Greece, California
- 8:33and the Sahara Desert. Triathlons are races with
- 8:36swimming, biking and running, and the Ironman in Hawaii is the
- 8:40most famous of all. There are also Olympic
- 8:42triathlons and fun events like Escape from Alcatraz and the
- 8:46Noosa Triathlon. Did you know that every year
- 8:49millions of people around the world join in these races,
- 8:52whether they're beginners or experts?
- 8:54Some wear fun costumes, some run with friends, and some even
- 8:58break world records. What all these athletes have in
- 9:01common is a spirit of adventure and a love for being active.
- 9:06Maybe one day you'll run a marathon, try a triathlon, or
- 9:10even take on an ultra marathon. For now, you can cheer for the
- 9:13athletes, learn about the different events, and maybe
- 9:16start by running or biking in your own neighborhood.
