Latest / Patriots Unfiltered / Training Camp-Cast 7/30: Maye Shines with TD Toss, OL Attrition Forces Adjustment, Full Day 7 Recap
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: A third straight day in pads and in the heat. Yes,
- 0:02Speaker 1: the dog days of summer. Here, let's break it down.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Welcome to the Patriots training camp cast everybody, and we
- 0:16Speaker 1: are back for practice number seven. Man, they're just reeling
- 0:20Speaker 1: off right now. I feel like we're getting into a flow.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Feels a little bit like groundhog Day. But another productive
- 0:24Speaker 1: day on the field, and guys, I would just say
- 0:26Speaker 1: my big thought from today was more of the same.
- 0:28Speaker 1: I thought both sides showed some flashes. You had some
- 0:31Speaker 1: moments where Drake may makeing some nice throws. You had
- 0:33Speaker 1: some good pressure from the defense at times as well,
- 0:36Speaker 1: and maybe most impressive to me was just actually Drake navigating.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Some of that pressure and delivering some throws.
- 0:40Speaker 3: So another good day, I would agree. I thought Drake
- 0:43Speaker 3: was a little bit sharper today.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Than it was yesterday. And again, you're right, it was
- 0:46Speaker 2: back and forth.
- 0:47Speaker 3: It wasn't you know, just you know, anything that was
- 0:50Speaker 3: overly consistent, But you know, some big time throws. I
- 0:53Speaker 3: thought the one obviously down the sideline, the Kyle Williams
- 0:55Speaker 3: really stood out because I don't think Kyle Williams was
- 0:57Speaker 3: really open. I think that's one of those that he
- 0:59Speaker 3: threw them open, but a good play by the rookie
- 1:02Speaker 3: to make the adjustment on the ball.
- 1:03Speaker 2: So yeah, some positive plays on both sides. Yeah.
- 1:06Speaker 4: I thought Drake was really good today for the most part,
- 1:09Speaker 4: and maybe some of the protection issues up front were
- 1:11Speaker 4: really what led to some of the clunkiness for the
- 1:13Speaker 4: offense towards the end of his string of plays, it
- 1:17Speaker 4: felt like they didn't necessarily finish a lot of their
- 1:19Speaker 4: string as well. But I thought he made some really
- 1:22Speaker 4: good throws today. And the thing that continues to stand
- 1:24Speaker 4: out to me with him is how his timing and
- 1:27Speaker 4: rhythm within this offense feels like he's been in this
- 1:30Speaker 4: offense before, and it doesn't look like a quarterback that's
- 1:33Speaker 4: learning a brand new offense and is maybe still kind
- 1:36Speaker 4: of seeing it slowly and it's developing slower for him.
- 1:39Speaker 4: Feels like the ball is coming out on time and
- 1:41Speaker 4: in rhythm more times than not. So just looking around
- 1:45Speaker 4: the league at some of the other training camps where
- 1:47Speaker 4: guys are changing coaching staffs and have new coordinators, I
- 1:50Speaker 4: don't think that's always the case for young quarterbacks when
- 1:52Speaker 4: they go from one offense to another, that it's kind
- 1:54Speaker 4: of a seamless transition. But you mentioned the Kyle Williams
- 1:58Speaker 4: Gobald that was a pretty thrill. That's a dime, that's
- 2:01Speaker 4: a big time throw.
- 2:02Speaker 3: He's got that one, as you like to say, he's
- 2:03Speaker 3: got that one in his toolbox.
- 2:05Speaker 2: It's not the first time we've seen it.
- 2:06Speaker 1: But there are also a couple of plays, Paul where we're
- 2:08Speaker 1: up above and that's a Patriots play that looked like
- 2:10Speaker 1: a couple of times, not a lot of them, but
- 2:11Speaker 1: there was one in particular where it was just a
- 2:13Speaker 1: little you know, dig sat down on a first down
- 2:15Speaker 1: and just boom hit him, ball came out right on time.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Love how you laid that out, Evan.
- 2:19Speaker 3: I thought it was one of Diggs's better days too,
- 2:21Speaker 3: you know. I mean, not that it was like a
- 2:23Speaker 3: lot of volume. I think he probably had, you know,
- 2:25Speaker 3: a handful of catches like he does every other day.
- 2:27Speaker 2: But I thought the way.
- 2:29Speaker 3: The catches came about, you know, one he really snatched
- 2:31Speaker 3: out of the air across the middle, sat in a
- 2:33Speaker 3: zone on another one. Just think you're seeing why he's
- 2:36Speaker 3: a little bit different than.
- 2:38Speaker 2: The rest of the guys.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Yeah, So I just want to highlight, you know, third
- 2:41Speaker 1: day of Pads, we had kind of extensive list of absences,
- 2:44Speaker 1: some guys that Mike Frabele said that we're given arrest
- 2:47Speaker 1: to Harold Landry at the top of the list, giving
- 2:50Speaker 1: opportunity for calevon Chase On who has really been a
- 2:54Speaker 1: consistent performer, and today he had a series where man
- 2:57Speaker 1: he blew bi Will Campbell I think two times and
- 2:59Speaker 1: it was not really close. He's really provided that pass
- 3:03Speaker 1: rush presence that I think they desperately needed. I felt
- 3:05Speaker 1: like I talked all off season about him or about
- 3:08Speaker 1: that need and now didn't necessarily expect him to be
- 3:11Speaker 1: the player that he has been through camp.
- 3:12Speaker 2: But he's been really impressive, and today I got to
- 3:14Speaker 2: call him out. I thought he was excellent today.
- 3:16Speaker 4: Yeah. Out of the guys that have been participating fully
- 3:18Speaker 4: almost every day, I would say he's been the most
- 3:21Speaker 4: noticeable defender on the field, maybe the best defender throughout
- 3:24Speaker 4: camp at this point for the Patriots, just really rushing
- 3:28Speaker 4: the passer extremely well. He's got that inside move down,
- 3:31Speaker 4: which is obviously a thing that Campbell's working on. So
- 3:34Speaker 4: it's a good matchup for Campbell to sort of work
- 3:37Speaker 4: in particularly on that. Today they were starting to stunt
- 3:40Speaker 4: a little bit more upfront do some games and things
- 3:42Speaker 4: like that with the pass rush, and Jason was a
- 3:45Speaker 4: big part of that as well. So he's just been disruptive.
- 3:49Speaker 4: He's been noticeable every single day coming off the edge,
- 3:51Speaker 4: and I know people are going to hear that and say, well,
- 3:53Speaker 4: that means that Will Campbell doesn't look so good. I
- 3:55Speaker 4: didn't think today was his best day, but I did
- 3:58Speaker 4: think he got better as the day progressed. I said,
- 4:00Speaker 4: started off pretty rocky for Campbell, but as practice wore
- 4:03Speaker 4: on and we got into the team periods, he settled
- 4:06Speaker 4: in a little bit. I know that that's going to
- 4:08Speaker 4: be a big talking point, so I just want to
- 4:10Speaker 4: make sure don't panic like it was okay.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, Well let's stay on the offensive line of
- 4:14Speaker 1: as Garrett Bradberry was out and we've been seeing a
- 4:17Speaker 1: lot of rotation at the center position, but it seemed
- 4:19Speaker 1: like this was an opportunity Paul for them to adjust
- 4:22Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, we had Ben Brown in
- 4:24Speaker 1: at center and rookie Jared Wilson playing all the reps
- 4:27Speaker 1: at left.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Guard right because they're thin now so they need to
- 4:30Speaker 3: find some more centers. And they had Cole Strange with
- 4:32Speaker 3: the second group at center, which opened up the spot
- 4:35Speaker 3: for Wilson, who we've been talking about is clearly making
- 4:38Speaker 3: a push with his athleticism. Cayden Wallace talked to us
- 4:42Speaker 3: after practice, you know, and he he just says he's
- 4:46Speaker 3: really good, and he used more colorful language than that too.
- 4:51Speaker 3: But you know, for a second year guy to look
- 4:52Speaker 3: at a first year guy like that, you know, I
- 4:55Speaker 3: thought that was an impressive quote to draw that kind
- 4:58Speaker 3: of an impression that quickly.
- 5:00Speaker 2: So there's some mixing and matching city.
- 5:02Speaker 3: So is another guy that left practice today, you know,
- 5:06Speaker 3: sort of in the middle of the team period. So
- 5:07Speaker 3: the attrition is hitting the offensive line a little bit.
- 5:10Speaker 3: So you know, Morgan Moses is on a pitch count
- 5:13Speaker 3: of some sort. Yes, Sir Durant did not practice today
- 5:15Speaker 3: after getting banged up yesterday, saying with Brad Berry, so
- 5:19Speaker 3: I think if you look at the three deep that
- 5:22Speaker 3: they have right.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Now, they don't have enough.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Yeah, there's no tackle, no left tackle with the third group,
- 5:26Speaker 3: so they're going to continue to mix and match. I
- 5:30Speaker 3: think they had another center come in today. I think
- 5:31Speaker 3: it's the youngest.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Lindstrom from BC, the youngest one. Yeah, I mean Alex Yeah, yeah, yeah, Alec.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I do wonder. You know Darian Lowe still on
- 5:42Speaker 4: the pup list, like he's supposed to be your backup
- 5:44Speaker 4: left tackle and he hasn't been out there. But with
- 5:46Speaker 4: Jared Wilson, I think it really stands out every single
- 5:50Speaker 4: day just how polished he is already as a rookie.
- 5:53Speaker 4: And I think the main thing is in past protection.
- 5:56Speaker 4: I think he's got a great stout anchor to him,
- 5:58Speaker 4: and he's got a great job of refitting his hands
- 6:01Speaker 4: and recovering when guys do swat his hands away and
- 6:04Speaker 4: swatted that initial punch aways. Just good feet, good balance,
- 6:07Speaker 4: doesn't end up on the ground a ton. Those are
- 6:09Speaker 4: the things that you want to see out of rookie
- 6:11Speaker 4: offensive lineman.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Out of the gate.
- 6:12Speaker 4: You can stay on your feet, can you move people?
- 6:14Speaker 4: Can you anchor? That's the NFL power is the league
- 6:18Speaker 4: Like the college game, You're not going to see the
- 6:20Speaker 4: power that you're going to see at this level. When
- 6:23Speaker 4: Christian Barmore and Milton Williams and even the Kiris Hunger
- 6:26Speaker 4: Jeremiah Farms are coming off the ball at you can
- 6:29Speaker 4: you put your cleats in the ground and stop them.
- 6:31Speaker 4: And that's different than the college game in terms of
- 6:34Speaker 4: the level of power. So seeing all those things from
- 6:36Speaker 4: Jared Wilson's really encouraging. I know that there's injuries and
- 6:39Speaker 4: there's reasons maybe that he was playing left guard that
- 6:42Speaker 4: go beyond this, but I just don't necessarily see right
- 6:45Speaker 4: now a path where he's not starting somewhere on this
- 6:47Speaker 4: line come week one. He would really have to tail
- 6:50Speaker 4: off from here to have that not happen. So I
- 6:53Speaker 4: would like to see it at left guard. Today it
- 6:55Speaker 4: was at left guard, so maybe they are in alignment
- 6:57Speaker 4: there and they have him at guard instead of center.
- 7:00Speaker 4: But either way, I feel like really positive that it
- 7:03Speaker 4: feels like they drafted two guys that can start on
- 7:06Speaker 4: the line, And when you had the worst offensive line
- 7:08Speaker 4: in football last year, to draft two starters on the
- 7:11Speaker 4: offensive line, that's a big development for this team and
- 7:14Speaker 4: for the offense.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Yeah, the kicker competition continues. After last two days, each
- 7:19Speaker 1: guy got their own reps. Today we were back to alternating,
- 7:21Speaker 1: and Paul thought it looked a little better, looked like
- 7:23Speaker 1: all the kicks were made best.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I think was the best day for the kickers.
- 7:26Speaker 3: I know, you know, your boy Alex will talk about
- 7:28Speaker 3: that and catch twenty two later. But I thought all
- 7:31Speaker 3: eight kicks today I thought looked exactly like an NFL
- 7:33Speaker 3: field goal should look.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Yeah, right, there's some positive. No, for sure, that was positive.
- 7:40Speaker 1: You're not even really any question, I mean some of well, no,
- 7:43Speaker 1: and I saw that too. I mean the balls looked
- 7:45Speaker 1: right coming off his foot. There was no real question
- 7:47Speaker 1: they all they all looked good from from all of
- 7:50Speaker 1: our vantage points.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Uh, what else do we have to breakdown? Anything else?
- 7:53Speaker 1: One is I just wanted to highlight Joel was here. Yeah,
- 7:57Speaker 1: and I want to say about that nothing nice catch
- 7:59Speaker 1: from Javon Baker. I mean, it's hard trying to highlight
- 8:02Speaker 1: all these guys who you know, made a play here
- 8:03Speaker 1: and there, But certainly this is the time where guys
- 8:06Speaker 1: are starting.
- 8:06Speaker 3: I wouldn't say, you know, I'll add that Jalen Polk
- 8:08Speaker 3: was one of the players that spoke after practice and
- 8:11Speaker 3: sort of asked a lot of different ways you know
- 8:14Speaker 3: how he's changed what he's learned, and he's pretty steadfast
- 8:17Speaker 3: in that. No, this is about me. I just got
- 8:20Speaker 3: I just have to play better like I. He doesn't
- 8:23Speaker 3: really acknowledge last year, which I think you can take
- 8:26Speaker 3: one of two ways. He just kept saying nothing's changed,
- 8:30Speaker 3: nothing's different. He said that I don't know if you'll
- 8:33Speaker 3: overrun that one. He said that about three or four
- 8:35Speaker 3: different times in different ways. So I think you could
- 8:38Speaker 3: take it as that's a positive sign. He's confident in
- 8:40Speaker 3: his ability and he's ready to sort of turn the
- 8:42Speaker 3: page move on. And it's about this year fresh start, reset,
- 8:45Speaker 3: I think is one of the words he used.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Or you could be negative. Some people are like that,
- 8:50Speaker 2: you know, like some others.
- 8:51Speaker 3: He not here that he didn't learn from last year,
- 8:53Speaker 3: right that he just thinks nothing happened last year and
- 8:56Speaker 3: there's nothing to change. It's just all about getting, you know,
- 8:59Speaker 3: getting started again. So I just thought it was interesting
- 9:01Speaker 3: his perspective.
- 9:02Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I just mentioned I was with Kidd and Wallace,
- 9:05Speaker 4: who there's another player that is interesting moving inside. He's
- 9:08Speaker 4: playing guard and he said he really likes it if
- 9:10Speaker 4: Rabel pointed out his physicality before practice, and so it
- 9:13Speaker 4: allows him to be a little bit more physical. You're
- 9:15Speaker 4: not dancing on the outside at tackle anymore. But the
- 9:19Speaker 4: guy I think that deserves mentioning a little bit is
- 9:21Speaker 4: DJ James, just because he's been out there and he's
- 9:23Speaker 4: been with the top group. Now Christian Zalez and Carlton
- 9:26Speaker 4: Davis are not practicing, so there's an opportunity there. That
- 9:29Speaker 4: doesn't necessarily mean he earned it right away, but I
- 9:32Speaker 4: think looking at him and having him out there is
- 9:35Speaker 4: interesting just for the back end of that cornerback depth
- 9:37Speaker 4: chart between him and Alex Austin and Marcella's dial, it's
- 9:40Speaker 4: going to be a competition there for those last few spots.
- 9:43Speaker 4: So not a name that I expected to be in
- 9:45Speaker 4: the mix there, and he is, so DJ James.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Yeah, Well there you have it, folks. Three street jays
- 9:50Speaker 2: of Pads.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Patriots going to pull back tomorrow with a walkthrough and
- 9:53Speaker 1: then in stadium practice on Friday night. But don't worry,
- 9:56Speaker 1: we'll be here both days breaking the breaking those practices down,
