- 0:17Speaker 1: Return to Glory podcast hunter Sarberniki here with just a
- 0:21Speaker 1: code of free Tech.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Tonight.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Austin is out following the Huskers dominant in air quotes
- 0:28Speaker 1: performance against Purdue, winning twenty eight to ten in West Lafayette,
- 0:33Speaker 1: moving to four and one on the season. I did
- 0:38Speaker 1: not get a chance to watch the game. I listened
- 0:41Speaker 1: to most all of it and watched the highlights. Was
- 0:44Speaker 1: running the market to market. Why I sign up for
- 0:47Speaker 1: that every year, I don't know, but basically we run
- 0:50Speaker 1: as a team from Omaha to Lincoln. Yeah, so, Dak,
- 0:54Speaker 1: you might have watched more. You probably did watch more
- 0:56Speaker 1: of the game than I did this week.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Yeah, you were doing something a little bit more functional.
- 1:02Speaker 2: I was doing all day. But yeah, I did end
- 1:04Speaker 2: up watching the game. Would you call it a dominant win?
- 1:09Speaker 1: That's why I'm putting it in air quotes. It's it was.
- 1:13Speaker 1: It was an interesting tale of two teams in two games.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I guess all inside one.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Yeah, you moved the ball. Moved the ball well the
- 1:29Speaker 2: whole I was. I was sitting with my buddy and
- 1:31Speaker 2: I was like, Hey, it feels like Nebraska on the
- 1:33Speaker 2: opponent forty this whole game, and it felt like you
- 1:35Speaker 2: were just there at that same spot, no man's land,
- 1:37Speaker 2: thirty to forty our line the whole game.
- 1:40Speaker 1: That was definitely a storyline, especially early on, and it
- 1:45Speaker 1: just sounded like on the radio, it always just seemed
- 1:47Speaker 1: like we were right at the thirty five, the forty,
- 1:50Speaker 1: the thirty yep close to field goal range, but as
- 1:52Speaker 1: we know from Nebraska kickers not probably in field goal range.
- 1:57Speaker 1: So it felt like we were moved moving the ball
- 2:00Speaker 1: okay like you said, but just couldn't execute when it
- 2:05Speaker 1: comes to points. I didn't tell Dak this episode that
- 2:09Speaker 1: he needs to open up and share his feelings because
- 2:11Speaker 1: he has more time to talk. So Dak is really
- 2:14Speaker 1: gonna give the insights today, open up about all of
- 2:19Speaker 1: his feelings. He even mentioned his love life at one point,
- 2:21Speaker 1: and he can talk about that.
- 2:22Speaker 2: So we're really talk about oh you were, Yeah.
- 2:27Speaker 1: I feel like the people really want to hear your
- 2:29Speaker 1: about your love life.
- 2:30Speaker 2: We we ain't getting that far and then we don't
- 2:32Speaker 2: have time for that. We don't got days.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Yeah, but.
- 2:41Speaker 2: So I think it showed the first drive how much
- 2:44Speaker 2: how little you trust your kicker off the bat, you
- 2:46Speaker 2: punt the ball in the thirty four yard line on
- 2:49Speaker 2: and that's just showing you don't trust your kicker at all.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Well, I mean, fifty one yards for us is right now,
- 2:56Speaker 1: that's the ways and and it sucks because I mean
- 2:59Speaker 1: we all, we all, I'll know the state of where
- 3:01Speaker 1: we're at and then we'll get to the field goal
- 3:04Speaker 1: kicks after that. But I was watching Virginia Tech Miami
- 3:08Speaker 1: Friday night, and you know, Virginia Tech's got a guy
- 3:10Speaker 1: that comes out and just buries two fifty plus yarders.
- 3:14Speaker 1: I'm like, these kickers are out there, like, don't tell
- 3:17Speaker 1: me that we can't pay a kicker to come to
- 3:20Speaker 1: Nebraska and maybe a long snapper and a holder, whatever
- 3:24Speaker 1: package we need to get to make field goals in
- 3:29Speaker 1: games that we need to. Now, it didn't come down
- 3:31Speaker 1: to costing us a win, but they definitely have. So
- 3:37Speaker 1: while we did win, I want to remind people that
- 3:40Speaker 1: there's still things that we need to be very concerned about.
- 3:44Speaker 1: I think it's easy to nitpick and go through the
- 3:47Speaker 1: ifs and the specific plays of what we did wrong
- 3:50Speaker 1: when you lose, because you like to analyze it more.
- 3:53Speaker 1: But then when you win, I will say, generally, as fans,
- 3:56Speaker 1: we don't do that as much. Now the coaches, I'm
- 3:58Speaker 1: sure are good coaching staffs know how to properly go
- 4:02Speaker 1: back and communicate that to their players. But as fans,
- 4:05Speaker 1: we kind of said, Okay, we won, Yeah, special team sucked.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Yeah we had some penalties, but well it's okay, we
- 4:11Speaker 1: won the game. I just want a caveat. I don't
- 4:13Speaker 1: think Purview's a very good football team.
- 4:16Speaker 2: No, you said this yesterday. Do you actually not have
- 4:19Speaker 2: a special team kicker or coach? We do, okay, you do? Okay,
- 4:25Speaker 2: you black guy. How that guy has a job? No clue,
- 4:28Speaker 2: no clue that guy's a job. I mean he might
- 4:31Speaker 2: have well not even have showed up yesterday. He's like,
- 4:33Speaker 2: no call, no show right there. That was one of
- 4:35Speaker 2: the worst kicking I've ever saw in a game.
- 4:39Speaker 1: That's fascinating, though, You say that because I mean, you're well,
- 4:44Speaker 1: you are a Nebraska fan more than an Oklahoma fan,
- 4:46Speaker 1: but you're not a die hard Nebraska fan. And just
- 4:52Speaker 1: from the outsider's perspective, you, I mean you can fall
- 4:55Speaker 1: back on the coach and say, well, special teams have
- 4:57Speaker 1: been bad again. Nebraska fans are tired of it. We
- 4:59Speaker 1: have done the okay, get into special teams coach before maybe.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, I guess you're he's the one responsible.
- 5:08Speaker 1: But at the same time, like kicking is a unique
- 5:10Speaker 1: position that, yeah, you teach it, and from what it
- 5:13Speaker 1: sounds like a lot of these guys are doing their
- 5:16Speaker 1: own type of training and coaching. It's the mental side
- 5:19Speaker 1: and well snapping. I don't I mean, I don't, I
- 5:22Speaker 1: don't know. It's just it's puzzling. We you know, we
- 5:25Speaker 1: talked about bringing in Brett Maher to help work with them.
- 5:31Speaker 1: It's it's a culmination of a lot of things. I
- 5:35Speaker 1: think you got to still boost confidence into those guys.
- 5:37Speaker 1: But man, it's it's not good. It's not good at all. No.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that's like said mentally, I think this guy, this
- 5:49Speaker 2: guy's gotta be damn mentally shot already.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Like we he just started kicking, right yeah.
- 5:58Speaker 2: And those and those kicks got locked or I mean,
- 6:01Speaker 2: it's kind of on your own line, kind of your
- 6:03Speaker 2: holder that and of the best naps either. But he
- 6:05Speaker 2: kicked them so low. They're short kicks. Those you kick high.
- 6:08Speaker 2: He kicked them so low they they not even it
- 6:11Speaker 2: was halfway at the person's body where they blocked the kicks.
- 6:14Speaker 1: It was like it's not like it was a yeah,
- 6:16Speaker 1: great defensive play to get to.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Kicked them like they're fifty yards like he was trying
- 6:21Speaker 2: to drive them.
- 6:21Speaker 1: It was like, and I don't know, I don't know
- 6:24Speaker 1: enough about kicking routines to say if the snap's bad
- 6:28Speaker 1: and the holes, but I think that was what the
- 6:29Speaker 1: message was to me. If you're the kicker from what
- 6:33Speaker 1: my high school football holding days that I had, like,
- 6:37Speaker 1: if you're the kicker, you're just you're you don't give
- 6:40Speaker 1: a shit about what the whole the snap in the hold,
- 6:42Speaker 1: your you have your routine, you do it on pace
- 6:45Speaker 1: and you go like the ball's not there. Then you're
- 6:47Speaker 1: swinging at air type of deal like you're not worried
- 6:51Speaker 1: about the other pieces. So to that point, Dak, yeah,
- 6:53Speaker 1: you're right, it's low. But I think the argument is
- 6:56Speaker 1: that the bad snap, hold, whatever can play a actor
- 7:00Speaker 1: into your approach. So if there's any specialists out there,
- 7:07Speaker 1: kicker specialists, I can confirm what I just said, let
- 7:11Speaker 1: me know, or maybe just go put a uniform on
- 7:14Speaker 1: and kick. Maybe that's what we need.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Now you're ready, you're talking about holding, Why holding the ball?
- 7:22Speaker 2: Why the kicker is not like the laces out I've
- 7:25Speaker 2: never figured.
- 7:26Speaker 1: That out rotation thing.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, which which the other the holds were just
- 7:32Speaker 2: laces were never out, they were just bobbled holes. And
- 7:35Speaker 2: he got it. He got the holder, had the ball
- 7:37Speaker 2: up there like set pretty well for the kick.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Okay, when you say out, you want the laces away
- 7:42Speaker 1: from your foot, like yeah, yeah, yep, you're you're saying
- 7:46Speaker 1: you don't want to you want the laces out. You
- 7:47Speaker 1: don't want them, and you don't want to hit the
- 7:49Speaker 1: laces and you prefer you want the laces like if
- 7:52Speaker 1: you're a right footed kicker, face left.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Okay. Yeah, And so the holds end up being end
- 8:00Speaker 2: up being pretty good for him bottling a round. But
- 8:04Speaker 2: that's just straight up on your kicker. I think I
- 8:07Speaker 2: was talking to someone else today about it, and they're like,
- 8:09Speaker 2: I never thought I say this, but I really want
- 8:11Speaker 2: Avana back.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Maybe I mean he's gonna come back off an injury.
- 8:14Speaker 1: And so I think the question, now, this is one
- 8:17Speaker 1: big talking point this week. It was even during the
- 8:21Speaker 1: game and maybe even before the game. At what point
- 8:24Speaker 1: do you say we're not kicking field goals? And is
- 8:27Speaker 1: there a threshold of saying we're only doing it, we're
- 8:29Speaker 1: inside the ten yard line and it's fourth and seven.
- 8:33Speaker 1: You know, I think that's something we have to be
- 8:38Speaker 1: considering right now moving forward, because especially if it's fourth
- 8:42Speaker 1: and less than five anywhere in field goal range, your
- 8:44Speaker 1: odds of converting are probably going to be better than
- 8:48Speaker 1: what we've seen so far. Not saying things can't flip around,
- 8:51Speaker 1: but what have we proven to shown that we can
- 8:54Speaker 1: make a forty two yarder? It with anybody? I mean,
- 8:58Speaker 1: all units, kicker, hold, snap, all of it, and I
- 9:01Speaker 1: don't I don't know. I don't know what the answer.
- 9:03Speaker 1: So that's that is why the coaches get paid the
- 9:05Speaker 1: big bucks to make those decisions. I know, I said
- 9:09Speaker 1: it after the second one, like just go for it,
- 9:12Speaker 1: But hell one is fourth and nine, like on the
- 9:16Speaker 1: twenty two yard line. I mean, what do you do
- 9:19Speaker 1: for that? I mean, I guess you know now.
- 9:23Speaker 2: And it ain't liked had the greatest special teams in
- 9:26Speaker 2: the show either. That guy sucked with him too. He
- 9:29Speaker 2: didn't even hit the net on his kick. It was
- 9:31Speaker 2: just awful around they so they haven't figured out the
- 9:32Speaker 2: kicking position either.
- 9:34Speaker 1: That was the first field goal attempt this year so far, believe.
- 9:37Speaker 2: It or not, Really did they just join the team
- 9:40Speaker 2: or what the hell happened?
- 9:41Speaker 1: Then kicked yet have not kicked on yet?
- 9:44Speaker 2: Wow? Okay, well okay before I forget about this and
- 9:48Speaker 2: we'll talk about later too. Did you see Perdue fither
- 9:50Speaker 2: offensive coordinator today?
- 9:51Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 9:52Speaker 2: Damn Harold. Yeah, I thought their offense look decent. I
- 9:57Speaker 2: don't know. I think there's a lot of other stuff
- 9:59Speaker 2: that I worry about.
- 10:00Speaker 1: That's it that you.
- 10:06Speaker 2: I mean, pretty sucks. The big time sucks. No.
- 10:09Speaker 1: I thought I would like shout out good for our defense.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Got an offensive coordinator fired. He is not comfortable running
- 10:21Speaker 1: the offense that they're trying to run.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Now.
- 10:22Speaker 1: I don't think your aam harrold Is If you guys
- 10:25Speaker 1: remember him, quarterback four or five years at Texas Tech
- 10:28Speaker 1: for Mike Leach. Kind of one of the pioneers, I
- 10:32Speaker 1: would say, of the air raid offense and was damn good.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Never really got anywhere in the NFL. Michael graftfree right yep,
- 10:42Speaker 1: when they had a crabtree. That that's the kind of
- 10:45Speaker 1: offense I think he's familiar with. Perdue doesn't have the
- 10:47Speaker 1: skill players to do that. I mean, clearly, they're wide
- 10:49Speaker 1: receivers were not great. They struggled to even do anything
- 10:53Speaker 1: up front running the ball. That was the concern. And
- 10:57Speaker 1: I'm gonna start here with a positive on the defensive
- 11:01Speaker 1: side because there were a lot of positives. We held
- 11:06Speaker 1: Purdue to fifty two yards rushing on the day, and
- 11:11Speaker 1: if we were going to lose this game, that was
- 11:14Speaker 1: the way they were gonna beat us is get a lead, slowly,
- 11:19Speaker 1: just run the clock down, get a couple of first downs,
- 11:24Speaker 1: and muck it up. Well, guess what, we did a
- 11:26Speaker 1: great job of stuffing it. Both Macaby and Reggie Love
- 11:29Speaker 1: are good running backs. I mean they're they're not world beaters,
- 11:33Speaker 1: but they're solid, good running backs in the Big Ten.
- 11:35Speaker 1: And then we did a good job on Hudson card
- 11:38Speaker 1: as well. So overall, the defense did what they needed
- 11:43Speaker 1: to do and it looked like they had that chip
- 11:45Speaker 1: back on their shoulder. Five sacks on the day, the
- 11:48Speaker 1: big pick six that obviously put the nail on the
- 11:52Speaker 1: coffin if it wasn't already at the time. The defense
- 11:55Speaker 1: played with some fire under them, and that was that
- 11:57Speaker 1: was good to see because we're gonna need to see
- 12:00Speaker 1: that game after game here in the Big Ten produce
- 12:04Speaker 1: not a great football team, but it was good to
- 12:06Speaker 1: get a little momentum back and it wins a win.
- 12:09Speaker 1: I mean the word should when you say we should
- 12:15Speaker 1: win a game, right, like mhm what I also, I'll
- 12:20Speaker 1: word it this way to you cause I want you
- 12:21Speaker 1: to answer this question, Dak. I would say if you
- 12:25Speaker 1: asked every Nebraska fan and probably every Purdue fan heading
- 12:29Speaker 1: into that game, and you just asked a simple question,
- 12:32Speaker 1: yes or no, you can't answer any other way. What
- 12:35Speaker 1: does it or is Nebraska better than Purdue?
- 12:39Speaker 2: Yes, every single one would say yes.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Everyone is saying yes, unless you're just.
- 12:44Speaker 2: A debbie downert it.
- 12:47Speaker 1: You tell me what does being better mean? Like, get
- 12:51Speaker 1: behind that word better.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Skill wise by about times ten coaching you. I mean,
- 13:02Speaker 2: I think everybody there would take that rule over I
- 13:04Speaker 2: game or what their coach name is. But I want
- 13:06Speaker 2: to talk about him later too. For sure, just every
- 13:10Speaker 2: part of Nebraska is better. Besides, you know, we talked
- 13:13Speaker 2: about the beginning Cacker, which which that might be a
- 13:16Speaker 2: dead tie. They both suck, but so yeah, mostly skilled
- 13:21Speaker 2: players that you think your talent should be able to
- 13:24Speaker 2: beat Purdue no matter what.
- 13:26Speaker 1: I think, talent is the word that a majority of
- 13:29Speaker 1: people go to when you say which team is better? Right,
- 13:33Speaker 1: You're not, You're not. There's a lot of other things
- 13:35Speaker 1: that could factor into that. When you say we have
- 13:37Speaker 1: the better team, you're saying that our talent is better.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Now what are you basing that off of when people
- 13:44Speaker 1: say that, like recruiting stars, Because we've had this discussion
- 13:47Speaker 1: on this podcast how recruiting stars are great in high school,
- 13:51Speaker 1: but that that comes with potential and development, which then
- 13:55Speaker 1: factors in coaching. So that makes it in there. I
- 14:02Speaker 1: guess you could just say, like if you're just watching
- 14:06Speaker 1: the eye test, like as far as who has better talent,
- 14:10Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know. I would I would say
- 14:12Speaker 1: the Nebraska fans over these past few years would say
- 14:15Speaker 1: we have had better talent than Purdue, Indiana, Rutgers Northwest,
- 14:21Speaker 1: or Michigan State Maryland. We would say we have better
- 14:24Speaker 1: talent than them. But yet, yeah, we lose a lot
- 14:27Speaker 1: of these games. So what I kind of why I
- 14:32Speaker 1: like this discussion is because ultimately, when you say you're
- 14:35Speaker 1: better than the other team, that means you should win.
- 14:39Speaker 1: You should be winning that football game. I'm gonna say
- 14:42Speaker 1: nine times out of ten times, if you're saying you
- 14:45Speaker 1: we have better talent, now, obviously if it's oh, it's
- 14:47Speaker 1: close in talent, but we maybe we're a little better,
- 14:51Speaker 1: which I think might be the case.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Like like your game last week.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Last week, and come this next week.
- 14:57Speaker 2: I'd say it's about dead even on talent, you know.
- 15:00Speaker 1: So then you say, you know, are we better than Rutgers?
- 15:03Speaker 1: I think we'll find out. You're yeah, We're gonna find
- 15:08Speaker 1: out you're you're Kuli drinkers are gonna go, yeah, we are.
- 15:12Speaker 1: We definitely do. Your pessimistics are gonna say, well, yeah, duh,
- 15:18Speaker 1: and then we're that's why we're gonna beat them sarcastically,
- 15:22Speaker 1: So it's yeah, we're gonna find out, and ultimately we're better.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Just comes down to winning, right. So if someone says, well, no,
- 15:32Speaker 1: we've been better than Purdue in the last six years,
- 15:35Speaker 1: have we before? They beat us? Four out of the
- 15:38Speaker 1: last six years they've been the better football team, and
- 15:41Speaker 1: four of those six years. That's what the word better
- 15:43Speaker 1: means is winning games. So we can talk about talent.
- 15:46Speaker 1: I like how you said we'll find out. We will
- 15:49Speaker 1: find out in all these games if we are better
- 15:52Speaker 1: than Rutgers, if we're better than Indiana, who's now rated
- 15:57Speaker 1: and undefeated, Ruggers, who's undefeated beating Washington. We were better
- 16:02Speaker 1: than Purdue this year, we were not better than Illinois.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Now maybe going into the game we said we were better,
- 16:10Speaker 1: but we worked.
- 16:13Speaker 2: We'll get in the Rutgers on Wednesday. But very surprised
- 16:16Speaker 2: you don't have a ranked opponent coming to town next week.
- 16:18Speaker 2: I thought for sure they'd be ranked. Your next one
- 16:20Speaker 2: after that is in the rankings. But what the heck
- 16:25Speaker 2: has happened to produce talent like you're talking about? They
- 16:28Speaker 2: used to two years ago they had Aman O'Connell and
- 16:31Speaker 2: then I cannot remember their fast wi see you guys
- 16:32Speaker 2: weren't a shoot out with him. Now they can't do
- 16:34Speaker 2: jack shit on either side of the ball. I mean,
- 16:38Speaker 2: maybe their coach has to worry about stop worrying about
- 16:40Speaker 2: himself in the weight room, and start wearing on players
- 16:42Speaker 2: that dude is jacked up.
- 16:44Speaker 1: I was gonna be on him since you didn't even
- 16:47Speaker 1: know his name.
- 16:49Speaker 2: It's Ryan Walters, isn't it. Yeah, okay that he was
- 16:54Speaker 2: jacked up. Not a good coach, but yeah he's jack
- 16:58Speaker 2: So I don't know if he's just not reading well
- 17:00Speaker 2: or what happened. But I thought Purdue used to be
- 17:02Speaker 2: a decent team. I always said, be in a battle.
- 17:06Speaker 1: I think Jeff Brohm did a really good thing for
- 17:08Speaker 1: that program. He obviously took the job at Louisville and
- 17:12Speaker 1: Ryan Walters came in two years ago. A lot of
- 17:15Speaker 1: these guys are transferring out. I mean Purdue every year.
- 17:18Speaker 1: I just felt like they were the team that had
- 17:20Speaker 1: a passing quarterback, that had one or two like NFL
- 17:24Speaker 1: type receivers, with.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Like receiver two years ago, I'm talking about palm Is
- 17:35Speaker 2: Palmer and Kase Thompson, and then they had they had
- 17:38Speaker 2: one I.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Remember his name, but and then the defensively they always
- 17:42Speaker 1: have an all big ten NFL type d end or linebacker.
- 17:47Speaker 1: I mean every year they do. So a lot of
- 17:50Speaker 1: those guys did transfer out, and you could just tell
- 17:52Speaker 1: their lack of talent I guess from those positions, and
- 17:56Speaker 1: I like it showed. And then to me, that's where, okay,
- 18:02Speaker 1: I'll take a step back before we go into our offense,
- 18:05Speaker 1: because this game felt like two different games into one
- 18:09Speaker 1: just listening to it. Following along, we won twenty eight
- 18:14Speaker 1: to ten perdue kicks a field goal to go up
- 18:18Speaker 1: three to nothing with like six thirty something left, in
- 18:22Speaker 1: the third quarter and leading up to that point.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Are you crapping yourself? By that point, I.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Think everybody's thinking, oh my gosh, this could be it
- 18:33Speaker 1: like not going down real bad doomsday scenario, but a
- 18:39Speaker 1: little bit like what in the world is going on?
- 18:42Speaker 1: Like we can't get the run game going, we're not scoring,
- 18:46Speaker 1: we're special teams. That's horrible. There's a billion penalties getting
- 18:49Speaker 1: thrown both ways and perdue. Now just drove ball in
- 18:54Speaker 1: the field, didn't get a touchdown, which was good, made
- 18:56Speaker 1: a field goal, and everybody's like, oh, boy, like I might.
- 19:01Speaker 1: I was saying it at halftime in the first quarter.
- 19:03Speaker 1: I'm like, just find a way to win this game.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Find a way to win this game. I who cares
- 19:07Speaker 1: if you're not going to look back on it at
- 19:09Speaker 1: the end of the year and say, man, we beat
- 19:11Speaker 1: Purdue by three points. Woof No, just win the game, okay,
- 19:16Speaker 1: And we get past that point. We responded and finally
- 19:24Speaker 1: we started moving the ball, got a few touchdowns, made
- 19:26Speaker 1: some halftime adjustments there, even though we got stopped in
- 19:29Speaker 1: that first drive, and did what we should have done
- 19:32Speaker 1: the whole game and the final score twenty eight ten.
- 19:35Speaker 1: We're not gonna remember this game come into the year.
- 19:37Speaker 1: We won't. We will not even talk about it because
- 19:40Speaker 1: we did what we were supposed to do against a
- 19:42Speaker 1: team that we were better than in one but it
- 19:46Speaker 1: just felt like two different games up until that switch
- 19:51Speaker 1: got flipped for us, and then once it happened, everyone's like, Okay,
- 19:57Speaker 1: we're fine, We're fine, We're good.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Deep breath, you were you were just waiting to score
- 20:02Speaker 2: that first touchdown to basically after that you felt fine,
- 20:05Speaker 2: but you just cannot get anywhere near the touchdown mark.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Like I said, you were stuck in I know, man's
- 20:11Speaker 2: land for a lot of first half.
- 20:12Speaker 1: But can't can't. Here's my question, after that, Are we fine?
- 20:21Speaker 2: I guess me? And I'm more confident coming out of
- 20:23Speaker 2: that game.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Than Yeah, That's what I'm saying. Like I think we
- 20:26Speaker 1: were all in almost deep panic mode and then the
- 20:30Speaker 1: game gets over and we're like, okay, like we're good,
- 20:33Speaker 1: let's move on next week, gotta win, or I mean,
- 20:38Speaker 1: is there like again, produced not good? I don't think.
- 20:40Speaker 1: I don't think that. I think they're one of the
- 20:41Speaker 1: worst teams in the Big Ten. I got that from
- 20:43Speaker 1: the beginning of the year. Where are we I don't know.
- 20:47Speaker 1: That's why are we Are we fine? Like? Should we
- 20:49Speaker 1: feel okay again?
- 20:52Speaker 2: Oh? Man, I think you can. I think you come
- 21:00Speaker 2: out of that. Oh shit, maybe feeling better. I don't
- 21:05Speaker 2: know which way I would be leaning, because that felt
- 21:07Speaker 2: like a game that we saw a thousand times. Nebraska
- 21:11Speaker 2: looks like that on the road, and they've lost that
- 21:13Speaker 2: game almost every time they've been since they've been to
- 21:15Speaker 2: Big ten. It looked like same game over and over.
- 21:18Speaker 1: So maybe we should feel better because we won a
- 21:21Speaker 1: game like that. And that goes right into what rules
- 21:25Speaker 1: said in the post game how that was a close game,
- 21:27Speaker 1: felt like it was a close game. We won that
- 21:29Speaker 1: game in the fourth quarter, yep, facts like that's totally
- 21:34Speaker 1: true and we haven't done that. So that part feels good.
- 21:37Speaker 1: The part that I'm like, what what the heck won?
- 21:41Speaker 1: Is the run game again?
- 21:44Speaker 2: Yeah, that's kind of died that died out. I don't know.
- 21:46Speaker 1: I don't know how to feel. I just I don't
- 21:48Speaker 1: know where my where my head's at there. Like Daldell,
- 21:52Speaker 1: who we thought the beginning of the year was going
- 21:54Speaker 1: to be this potential workhorse number one back. He was
- 21:59Speaker 1: nine carries for two one yards, like two point three
- 22:01Speaker 1: yards of carry. That's not good now, Emma Johnson, he
- 22:05Speaker 1: did some really good things. Oh Ramier also is under
- 22:08Speaker 1: two yards of carry. Emma Johnson did some good things.
- 22:10Speaker 1: And Jacry Barney did some good things as well. And
- 22:14Speaker 1: Purdue probably stole a little bit out of Illinois playbook
- 22:17Speaker 1: and said we're gonna stop the run and props because
- 22:21Speaker 1: they did for the most part. But man, Dylan Ryola
- 22:28Speaker 1: is still a dude, and watching those highlights back, we
- 22:33Speaker 1: are I'm probably gonna say this every Sunday Recap pod.
- 22:36Speaker 1: We are so lucky to have a guy like that because.
- 22:40Speaker 2: Last year's team that hart get shut out that game.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Well we get shut out or the game sept you
- 22:45Speaker 1: know six six, three years ninety three, ten to three,
- 22:48Speaker 1: like that's what the final score. We have a guy
- 22:51Speaker 1: back there that can say we're not losing this game
- 22:53Speaker 1: and go out and win it, even though it's not great.
- 22:58Speaker 1: He special throws. I mean, watching some of these highlights
- 23:02Speaker 1: back as, I'm like, okay, like Dylan's gonna take care
- 23:07Speaker 1: of us in situations like this, But we don't need
- 23:11Speaker 1: to be in the situation to get taken care of
- 23:14Speaker 1: against a team like that. Now, I would hope not
- 23:16Speaker 1: in the future.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Now, why do you think your problem is with the
- 23:21Speaker 2: run game? Is it blocking or is it just the
- 23:23Speaker 2: coach give up on the too early because they just
- 23:26Speaker 2: give up, like they just say, fucking we're done.
- 23:29Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm puzzled by it, someone asked me,
- 23:33Speaker 1: and I thought it was a valid point that it
- 23:35Speaker 1: felt like maybe our path protection has been better this year, yeah,
- 23:39Speaker 1: and our run blocking maybe hasn't. And how those translate
- 23:44Speaker 1: to each other. I know, the footwork's different, the scheming
- 23:47Speaker 1: is a lot different. I just I would think that
- 23:52Speaker 1: there'd be a lot of correlation though, between the two,
- 23:55Speaker 1: that if you're decent at one, you're decent at the other.
- 23:59Speaker 1: It is a little puzzling just because of what we
- 24:01Speaker 1: did last year. I think that's the big thing. Like
- 24:03Speaker 1: if we didn't have the year last year, which Tossinger
- 24:06Speaker 1: oppin was good last year, but we ran the ball
- 24:08Speaker 1: and everybody knew we were running the ball and we
- 24:10Speaker 1: were still able to do it, and then we turned
- 24:13Speaker 1: it over.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Well, you had to do it last year, right.
- 24:17Speaker 1: So why why we can't do it this year? That's
- 24:20Speaker 1: what's a little more puzzling. We do it from the
- 24:21Speaker 1: younger guys playing it does sound like Gunnar Gatula played well.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Left tackle Masuka TBD. We're gonna hopefully hear more from
- 24:29Speaker 1: real tomorrow. Like you said at the end of his
- 24:32Speaker 1: press conference.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Is now the one thing about last year though, running
- 24:37Speaker 2: the ball, you had a running quarterback, So if teams
- 24:40Speaker 2: were worried about that, you ain't worried about Royola taken off.
- 24:44Speaker 1: No, and we tried it. That is a whole nother conversation.
- 24:47Speaker 1: I want to dive into maybe a different episode with
- 24:50Speaker 1: Rayola and running the ball and everybody's thoughts on it,
- 24:53Speaker 1: because I want to hear Austin's too. We've tried to
- 24:56Speaker 1: put Heinrich in there a little bit this week. Again,
- 24:59Speaker 1: it's just weird and how we're using them. I still
- 25:02Speaker 1: don't really know how I feel about it, like not
- 25:05Speaker 1: strong either way. I do like that it probably adds
- 25:08Speaker 1: preparation time for the other team. I'm waiting for, like
- 25:10Speaker 1: the big play to go. We've been doing this all
- 25:13Speaker 1: because of this for this one play or two plays.
- 25:16Speaker 1: This is why we've been doing it. Maybe we'll wait
- 25:18Speaker 1: for Ohado State to do that. I don't know. We
- 25:21Speaker 1: should be just doing it to win a game, but
- 25:24Speaker 1: we still keep throwing him out there here and there.
- 25:27Speaker 1: I do, like, I mean running the quarterback when we can,
- 25:31Speaker 1: Like I think that's a strong part of an offense.
- 25:33Speaker 1: And like if I was had a random football team,
- 25:36Speaker 1: I would that'd be a quarterback. I'd want someone that
- 25:39Speaker 1: can run the ball, like the Adrian Martinez is are
- 25:42Speaker 1: are of the world are kind of my style. Like
- 25:44Speaker 1: I like those guys that are better, better runners overall
- 25:48Speaker 1: than passers, but can still throw it. But Dylan obviously
- 25:51Speaker 1: is not that. He's very, very gifted though in other ways,
- 25:55Speaker 1: in a lot of ways better than what we've had
- 25:57Speaker 1: in the past. For sure, his potential and ceiling is
- 26:03Speaker 1: far higher than anything we've had in recent years. And
- 26:07Speaker 1: I think his leadership capabilities too, I think will pay off.
- 26:13Speaker 1: And I think maybe we're starting to see that a
- 26:15Speaker 1: little bit. I just can't emphasize how important he is
- 26:19Speaker 1: to this team and how much he does for us.
- 26:22Speaker 1: It is his stats for what sixteen for twenty five,
- 26:27Speaker 1: I think this week for two hundred and fifty ish
- 26:30Speaker 1: yards and a touchdown. Like, he's not putting up gaudy numbers.
- 26:33Speaker 1: He's not, and he knows he's not. Worried about that.
- 26:36Speaker 1: That's what I so far love about it. You don't.
- 26:38Speaker 1: You don't see him complaining or saying, oh man, we're
- 26:41Speaker 1: not doing this enough for this enough. He's sticking to
- 26:44Speaker 1: what the coaches want him to do. And regardless of
- 26:48Speaker 1: who we played, were four and one.
- 26:52Speaker 2: Now, let's so, what's your final your final call? Are
- 26:55Speaker 2: you more confident or less confident coming out of that game?
- 26:59Speaker 1: I would say, I'd say I'm neutral. I know it's
- 27:02Speaker 1: a podcast. I'm supposed to take a side and go
- 27:06Speaker 1: one way or the other way, but I'm neutral.
- 27:09Speaker 2: You've been talking. I found that side.
- 27:11Speaker 1: I'm still waiting to see the proof of a big win. Well,
- 27:16Speaker 1: there's a big win, a close win. I'm gonna say
- 27:19Speaker 1: a close win because you can say this is a
- 27:22Speaker 1: close win in the fourth quarter. I get it. And
- 27:25Speaker 1: it was a close game. It was a battle the
- 27:27Speaker 1: second part. We kicked their button it after the six
- 27:29Speaker 1: thirty mark in the third quarter. But when you see
- 27:33Speaker 1: the record in four weeks on the TV that says
- 27:37Speaker 1: Matt rules record in one score game, this isn't gona
- 27:39Speaker 1: account for it. The narrative is still gonna be can
- 27:41Speaker 1: we win a one score game? I'm not saying we
- 27:43Speaker 1: should a tank. So it was a one score game,
- 27:46Speaker 1: but no one's gonna think of this game as a
- 27:48Speaker 1: one score game at the end of the year. It's
- 27:50Speaker 1: not That narrative is still gonna stick around until we
- 27:53Speaker 1: can beat it. And I thought this week might be
- 27:57Speaker 1: the game that we have to beat it, Like I did,
- 27:59Speaker 1: think it was going to be a close game, but
- 28:01Speaker 1: it wasn't and we won by double digits again, So
- 28:07Speaker 1: I feel I'm neutral on it. I guess is where
- 28:09Speaker 1: I'm at. We'll have to see the next couple of games.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I was kind of neutral going in the podcast,
- 28:17Speaker 2: but I think I'm leaning towards I'd be more worried because,
- 28:21Speaker 2: I mean, there's a lot of factors. Now you find
- 28:23Speaker 2: out you can't trust your special teams at all, and
- 28:27Speaker 2: I think we do is awful. You're the big thing
- 28:31Speaker 2: is by your special teams, you got to be crappy
- 28:34Speaker 2: or something now because you don't trust anything about that.
- 28:37Speaker 2: And then another reason I'd be a little bit worried
- 28:39Speaker 2: is Indian Rutgers just keep on looking like they're better
- 28:42Speaker 2: than what we all thought in your schedule.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Look, they they're gonna they're gonna be games that set
- 28:50Speaker 1: us straight for the year where we're at, they really
- 28:52Speaker 1: will be. I think we opened as a six and
- 28:54Speaker 1: a half point favorite today.
- 28:56Speaker 2: That's a little high, but yep, I was like, whoa.
- 29:03Speaker 1: We went all this time? We have not mentioned the
- 29:06Speaker 1: refs once and I need to, you know what. I
- 29:13Speaker 1: just feel like that's the topic that everybody's talking about
- 29:15Speaker 1: right now, and we haven't had our little refs feel
- 29:18Speaker 1: here this year yet. We've been kind of quiet on them.
- 29:22Speaker 1: I feel like this would be a good game to
- 29:23Speaker 1: have it. There were a lot of penalties. Obviously, the
- 29:28Speaker 1: total penalty yards for both teams ended up being here
- 29:35Speaker 1: we go. We had We had eleven penalties for ninety
- 29:40Speaker 1: four yards and they had thirteen fo one hundred and
- 29:42Speaker 1: sixty five. Yeah, almost almost two hundred and sixty yards
- 29:50Speaker 1: of penalties.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Now, I have you gone back and looked at the
- 29:54Speaker 2: one play I'm sure you love is the past interference?
- 29:57Speaker 1: Okay, that's the play that everybody's talking about. Yeah, and
- 30:03Speaker 1: rule mentions it talks about it quite a bit. You
- 30:07Speaker 1: go back and watch it. He was very upset in
- 30:08Speaker 1: mid game during it. They got that play wrong like
- 30:12Speaker 1: they did, There's no question about it. They missed it.
- 30:19Speaker 1: The calls to do after that, I think going back
- 30:22Speaker 1: to the review, you can't review whether contact was made.
- 30:26Speaker 1: The only thing they could review was whether the ball
- 30:29Speaker 1: wasn't beyond the line of scrimmage to make it an
- 30:30Speaker 1: op insitive PAS interference. That wasn't the case, or that
- 30:33Speaker 1: was the case, so it was still a pass interference.
- 30:37Speaker 1: They messed that one up here. And just to remind
- 30:42Speaker 1: people how we think about right at least how I
- 30:44Speaker 1: think about refs, because there's a whole bunch of opinions
- 30:51Speaker 1: out there. People, Oh man, the stadium refs are the worst.
- 30:54Speaker 1: There's so many of them. There were a lot of
- 30:56Speaker 1: penalties called. But when I asked a question, how many
- 30:58Speaker 1: calls did they miss? Both ways, both teams, everybody goes
- 31:02Speaker 1: to that one. Like, again, I didn't watch the game,
- 31:06Speaker 1: but I am. People tell me what other calls. I mean,
- 31:09Speaker 1: there's obviously some ones that are judgment calls, But what
- 31:12Speaker 1: other calls do you think that they messed up on?
- 31:15Speaker 2: I don't think they. I didn't think they wrapped, like
- 31:17Speaker 2: in a terrible game, wrapping all round. That one was awful.
- 31:21Speaker 2: Like if you're the ref and you see that, you
- 31:22Speaker 2: can overturn it. You're probably watching it like, oh my god,
- 31:25Speaker 2: I really messed that one up. I don't think they
- 31:28Speaker 2: were awful. They didn't let them play at all, Like
- 31:30Speaker 2: if you hold someone at all in that game, they're
- 31:32Speaker 2: calling that like they need to let them. My thing
- 31:36Speaker 2: about the refs is quick trying to make the show
- 31:39Speaker 2: about yourself and let let the players play a little
- 31:42Speaker 2: bit like it was every play just flag of the play.
- 31:45Speaker 1: It their penalties.
- 31:48Speaker 2: Yeah, that's yeah, but it's kind of like basketball. You
- 31:52Speaker 2: call the game different final two minutes than you do.
- 31:54Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. Tell me on the almost pass
- 31:56Speaker 1: interference as they called them, Brue, tell me which one
- 31:58Speaker 1: of those weren't pass interference? They were like, So like yeah,
- 32:04Speaker 1: you could argue and say, don't make the game about yourself.
- 32:08Speaker 1: I think if their penalties are penalties.
- 32:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and that just makes team they don't And.
- 32:15Speaker 1: That's maybe the product of it when when teams aren't
- 32:18Speaker 1: very good. This goes to any sport. What happens you're
- 32:21Speaker 1: not really doing it on purpose, but you kind of
- 32:23Speaker 1: start breaking the rules. You start cheating a little bit
- 32:25Speaker 1: because you're not in position to make the play. Now,
- 32:28Speaker 1: the rules comment specifically is talking about that one play.
- 32:34Speaker 1: Guys are are executing the plays and they don't know
- 32:36Speaker 1: what to do again one play. I want to know
- 32:39Speaker 1: about the others, like we Yes, they're gonna there's gonna
- 32:42Speaker 1: be miscalls. That's part of refereeing, like officiating, that's going
- 32:48Speaker 1: to happen. There's a lot of judgment in it. But
- 32:52Speaker 1: when there's penalties, they're penalties. And I thought Dylan did
- 32:55Speaker 1: a great job of identifying that produced dbs. We're not
- 32:58Speaker 1: going to ever turn their head and the air and
- 33:00Speaker 1: man coverage. And I don't know if he was doing
- 33:02Speaker 1: it on purpose, but he was under throwing the ball
- 33:04Speaker 1: by just two yards, which is what an NFL quarterback
- 33:07Speaker 1: would do. So our guy had to stop and come
- 33:09Speaker 1: back to the ball. Boom PI. Not saying that's the
- 33:12Speaker 1: best strategy to move the ball on offense, but hey,
- 33:14Speaker 1: guess what, it's fifteen yards.
- 33:18Speaker 2: I forgot about them not during your head. So so
- 33:21Speaker 2: they come out of this game, they decided that they
- 33:24Speaker 2: had to file their OC that they had so many
- 33:26Speaker 2: other problems. I do not get while they fired that guy,
- 33:28Speaker 2: but I'm not a huge perdue person either.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Anyway. Here here's here's my entire like overall thing on
- 33:37Speaker 1: ress one with coaches, I agree that not gonna say
- 33:44Speaker 1: I agree with real personal foul call on why he
- 33:47Speaker 1: got it and he made his explanation on whatever, I whatever.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Besides the point, I agree that coaches need to be
- 33:54Speaker 1: the ones fighting for their players with officials to get calls.
- 33:58Speaker 1: And sometimes you just do it because you do it,
- 34:00Speaker 1: and you don't even really agree that that's what happened
- 34:02Speaker 1: on the play. You do it to show your players
- 34:04Speaker 1: that I have your back, I'm fighting for you, because
- 34:07Speaker 1: guess what in return, they're going to fight for you
- 34:09Speaker 1: on the field. I think that's very, very important, and
- 34:13Speaker 1: really good coaches do that. Scott Frost did not do
- 34:15Speaker 1: that until he was desperate, desperate, desperate at the end.
- 34:18Speaker 1: Mike Riley, I laugh. I think that's important because two
- 34:25Speaker 1: players should never ever complain to officials a matter of
- 34:30Speaker 1: the situation. The only one that might have a little
- 34:32Speaker 1: justification as a quarterback if you have a relationship with
- 34:35Speaker 1: the header f which you see more in the NFL
- 34:37Speaker 1: than college. Players should never talk to the officials, and
- 34:42Speaker 1: if your coach is doing their job right, that shouldn't happen.
- 34:46Speaker 1: Third thing, officials should never be the reason that you
- 34:50Speaker 1: won or lost the game. That should never be a justification. Ever.
- 34:56Speaker 1: Fourth thing I kind of mentioned this, calls are going
- 34:58Speaker 1: to be missed. Some games will be more than others.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Some games will be more penalties than others. Last thing,
- 35:06Speaker 1: the worst line that I hate that people say, God,
- 35:09Speaker 1: the ref's hate Nebraska, the Big Ten hates Nebraska, the
- 35:12Speaker 1: refs hate us. There's not a single reffing crew out
- 35:15Speaker 1: there that is out to get anybody. Officials are never
- 35:19Speaker 1: going to screw a team over because they have fights
- 35:23Speaker 1: for you and that's not going to happen. And people
- 35:26Speaker 1: said the rest are bad and called somebody, well, yeah,
- 35:28Speaker 1: guess what. Produce still had more penalties than us. So
- 35:33Speaker 1: everybody's opinions on refereeing, and it only it's only worse
- 35:37Speaker 1: now because we have video to like see every angle
- 35:42Speaker 1: of how they can miss a call live. Yeah, it's
- 35:46Speaker 1: only worse and worse and worse. And then on top
- 35:47Speaker 1: of that you can you can replay and see it
- 35:49Speaker 1: the next day, and I mean it's all out there. Yes,
- 35:55Speaker 1: there were a lot of penalties, Yes it chops the
- 35:57Speaker 1: game up, but guess what if you execute and you
- 36:00Speaker 1: don't fall start on fourth and one. Bryce ben Hart like,
- 36:03Speaker 1: can't do that, don't do that crap?
- 36:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't. I just feel like big ten rapping.
- 36:14Speaker 2: I was talking about this yesterday too, Big ten rapping
- 36:16Speaker 2: is worse than any other conference that I watch. I
- 36:18Speaker 2: feel like, I feel like, especially lower games like this
- 36:21Speaker 2: we do Nebraska, Indiana, Maryland say that's lower game. I
- 36:25Speaker 2: feel like they put just the shittiest reffing crews out there,
- 36:27Speaker 2: like Michigan State last year, Nebraska, those guys that know
- 36:30Speaker 2: what they were doing.
- 36:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember. I will say, I don't know who
- 36:33Speaker 1: these guys were. That was my first question after the
- 36:36Speaker 1: game was who are the officials, because a lot of
- 36:39Speaker 1: times you'll see the same guys week after. I didn't
- 36:42Speaker 1: recognize these guys at all.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Neither. I was like, I never saw these guys.
- 36:47Speaker 1: So I don't know the extent of you know, where
- 36:50Speaker 1: they came from. Maybe they came with the PAC twelve
- 36:52Speaker 1: officials and with these other teams. I'm not sure, but
- 36:56Speaker 1: it just it. It was fun just going back and
- 37:01Speaker 1: watching some of it. I'm like, well, yeah, there's a
- 37:03Speaker 1: lot of penalties, but at the same time, I'm like
- 37:06Speaker 1: a lot of these are penalties. Maybe that's just a
- 37:08Speaker 1: product of to not overly great football teams.
- 37:11Speaker 2: I don't think they were terrible, Like I said, I
- 37:14Speaker 2: don't think that they reffed a terrible game. When they
- 37:16Speaker 2: through that flag at the beginning of the offense pasters,
- 37:18Speaker 2: I was like, oh boy, here we go. This is
- 37:20Speaker 2: gonna be it's gonna be a disaster. But I did
- 37:24Speaker 2: think they repped a terrible game. And all they called,
- 37:26Speaker 2: like you said, they called they saw on the field.
- 37:28Speaker 2: And if Ford is not gonna turn their heads, I
- 37:30Speaker 2: don't know what they're coaching and practice at all that
- 37:32Speaker 2: high school love stuff. They're not gonna turn their heads.
- 37:34Speaker 2: Call it like that's on them. Turn your head and
- 37:37Speaker 2: look for the ball.
- 37:40Speaker 1: All right. Well that's all we got for time this week.
- 37:43Speaker 1: We'll be back Wednesday previewing Ruggers go be Red.
- 37:47Speaker 2: We were sooner big win.
- 37:50Speaker 1: Yes they did.
