Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey, what's happened? Everyone? Welcome into another edition of to
- 0:12Speaker 1: check O Daily.
- 0:14Speaker 2: It's Andrew di Checko, Eagles beat reporter for insidethebirds dot Com,
- 0:18Speaker 2: and today's Thursday, which means it was the first official
- 0:21Speaker 2: practice for the Eagles this week. They had a walkthrough
- 0:24Speaker 2: on Wednesday, they were on the practice field today, and
- 0:29Speaker 2: we have a recent injury report that I'm going to
- 0:31Speaker 2: read for you in just a moment, and not practicing today.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Defensive tackle Jalen Carter's shoulders, guard Landon Dickerson calf rest,
- 0:42Speaker 2: tackle Lane Johnson foot so on Landon Dickerson. If you
- 0:48Speaker 2: remember back to the injury report from the first day
- 0:50Speaker 2: from Wednesday, it was just a walkthrough and that was
- 0:52Speaker 2: an estimation. But Landon Dickerson was listed as limited had
- 0:57Speaker 2: he practice, So I think the slash rest should quell
- 1:02Speaker 2: the rest part of that should quell some concerns. Obviously,
- 1:05Speaker 2: Friday is going to be a huge day in terms
- 1:09Speaker 2: of figuring out where he lands in the game preparation.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Limited tackle Fred Johnson ankle. That's a new one.
- 1:16Speaker 2: He was not listed on the estimation yesterday, so presumably
- 1:23Speaker 2: Fred Johnson injured himself at practice today. Full go linebacker
- 1:29Speaker 2: Zach Baugh and long snapper Charlie Hewlett, and tackle Cameron Williams.
- 1:34Speaker 2: So the Eagles on Thursday opened the twenty one day
- 1:37Speaker 2: practice window for rookie tackle Cameron Williams. And I'm sure
- 1:42Speaker 2: some of you may be wondering, why would you do
- 1:44Speaker 2: that at this stage? Well, I kind of liken it
- 1:47Speaker 2: to what the Eagles did earlier or throughout the season.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I should say, with Willie Lampkin activating his practice window,
- 1:54Speaker 2: they now have three weeks worth of practice to go
- 1:57Speaker 2: off of going into the offseason. They've seen him on
- 1:59Speaker 2: the practice field during the season. Now you look at
- 2:03Speaker 2: someone like Miles Hinton, same thing. The Eagles got three
- 2:05Speaker 2: weeks of practice out of him, and I imagine the
- 2:08Speaker 2: same would be for Cameron Williams, because even all things
- 2:12Speaker 2: being equal, Cameron Williams and Miles Hinton, Miles Hinton was
- 2:16Speaker 2: the player who was further ahead in terms of their development.
- 2:19Speaker 2: I think this is more to get him into the
- 2:22Speaker 2: flow of practice, gets the under his belt because he
- 2:25Speaker 2: was on injury reserve. Believe it was shortly after Week
- 2:28Speaker 2: one with the shoulder injury, so he hasn't gotten practice
- 2:32Speaker 2: with the team. He's done stuff off to the side
- 2:35Speaker 2: independently as he was working his way back. But good
- 2:38Speaker 2: news there. We'll see how that all shakes out. But
- 2:41Speaker 2: that's your injury report. I think the one that has
- 2:44Speaker 2: some eyebrows raised is the Fred Johnson one because, as
- 2:47Speaker 2: I mentioned, he wasn't listed on Wednesday's estimation, so.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Something to certainly keep an eye on. The Eagles are
- 2:57Speaker 1: a little light.
- 2:57Speaker 2: On offensive lineman, at least today at practice. I mean
- 3:02Speaker 2: in place of Landon Dickerson. I mean Brett Toth is
- 3:04Speaker 2: the reserve left guard and he's the reserve center. He's
- 3:08Speaker 2: the top backups at both, so he was there today
- 3:12Speaker 2: and should land and not be able to go this
- 3:16Speaker 2: weekend against the Raiders, you would see Brett Toth there
- 3:19Speaker 2: at left guard. But again we're going to learn more
- 3:22Speaker 2: on Friday. That's why Friday's practice is so critical. Tackle,
- 3:27Speaker 2: they're really light. They have Matt Pryor and you have
- 3:32Speaker 2: Cameron Williams who's practicing now but he's not on the
- 3:34Speaker 2: fifty three yet. So yeah, they're a little light there
- 3:37Speaker 2: at tackle. But Fred Johnson was still able to participate
- 3:41Speaker 2: in unlimited capacity, so we'll see if that continues tomorrow.
- 3:46Speaker 1: If he's full go.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Tomorrow, We're going to learn a lot more based off
- 3:49Speaker 2: of that. The Eagles also will be in a position
- 3:59Speaker 2: where they you're going into a game against an inferior
- 4:03Speaker 2: team like the Raiders, and they don't have a lot
- 4:06Speaker 2: of talent across the board. Sure they have Max Crosby,
- 4:10Speaker 2: but you know that's just one player. He's an impactful
- 4:13Speaker 2: pass rusher, one of the league's best, but there's not
- 4:16Speaker 2: a lot there. So you could look at this game
- 4:18Speaker 2: and say, should the Eagles win this convincingly? Yeah, I
- 4:22Speaker 2: mean they should conceivably, But I think style points.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Are overrated on me. For me and what I do,
- 4:29Speaker 1: it doesn't matter.
- 4:30Speaker 2: But what I would like to see is certain areas rectified,
- 4:34Speaker 2: and if they're able to win, I think that is
- 4:36Speaker 2: a positive, no matter how big the margin is. I
- 4:40Speaker 2: think if they're able to have a passing game, which
- 4:43Speaker 2: I thought all things considered on Monday night, looked a
- 4:46Speaker 2: lot more advanced and they were trying some different things.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Jay went fit the ball into tight windows a lot
- 4:52Speaker 2: of times. He delivered some nice touch passes to AJ
- 4:55Speaker 2: that they were unable to connect on due to some drops.
- 4:59Speaker 2: But I want to see more more of that, but
- 5:01Speaker 2: better execution across the board. If they're able to do
- 5:04Speaker 2: things like that against the Raiders defense, they can't stop
- 5:08Speaker 2: very many people, and they're among the league's worst. With
- 5:11Speaker 2: all due respect, I mean, I think that's I think
- 5:14Speaker 2: that's a side of encouragement and progress.
- 5:16Speaker 1: The defense.
- 5:17Speaker 2: I don't have any concerns at all because they're among
- 5:21Speaker 2: the NFL's best.
- 5:22Speaker 1: They are among the elite.
- 5:23Speaker 2: And they're so good that they have the ability and
- 5:26Speaker 2: they have this season won the Eagles some games. So
- 5:31Speaker 2: I think that is a super Bowl caliber defense that
- 5:34Speaker 2: they have, and that's going to be able to keep
- 5:37Speaker 2: them in most games. If the offense can just be
- 5:40Speaker 2: competent or reach expectations, don't even need to exceed them,
- 5:45Speaker 2: but just reach it. With that talent level and that defense,
- 5:49Speaker 2: I think you're gonna see a lot of progress made there.
- 5:54Speaker 2: But Eagles defensive coordinator Fitic Vangio also spoke, and I'll
- 6:00Speaker 2: highlight a couple of the important ones he talked.
- 6:03Speaker 1: About Byron Young.
- 6:05Speaker 2: And Byron Young I thought, play lights out a second
- 6:07Speaker 2: and a half a player who answered the bell, his
- 6:11Speaker 2: number was called and he delivered. I had a good
- 6:13Speaker 2: conversation with him last week about his opportunity.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Hey, it's Jeff Mosher. And if you have a family

- 9:03Speaker 2: He played I believe thirty two snaps against the Chargers
- 9:06Speaker 2: and was disruptive, and you saw all of the young
- 9:09Speaker 2: defensive linemen and Brandon Graham, who played quite a bit,
- 9:13Speaker 2: be able to take on a larger workload and rise
- 9:15Speaker 2: to the occasion. But Fanjo said, I thought b Y
- 9:18Speaker 2: had a good game too. He answered the bell hang
- 9:22Speaker 2: on just one second when we needed it, and we're
- 9:29Speaker 2: going to continue to need to get that from him
- 9:32Speaker 2: moving forward. Uh talked about Brandon Graham playing inside and
- 9:46Speaker 2: what he liked about him playing inside. He said, yeah,
- 9:48Speaker 2: BG is the ultimate pro. He's got strength, he knows
- 9:52Speaker 2: how to play blocks. I think will be better this
- 9:54Speaker 2: week moving forward. He also talked about a Dori Jackson,
- 9:59Speaker 2: who I talked a lot about on yesterday's podcast and
- 10:02Speaker 2: throughout the season, as I've written about him and talked
- 10:04Speaker 2: about him on this podcast. Because I always like to
- 10:08Speaker 2: offer a different perspective than maybe what you see on
- 10:13Speaker 2: social media and things you know from people who are
- 10:17Speaker 2: overly critical, or what you hear on talk radio. I
- 10:19Speaker 2: like to offer a perspective of having getting gotten to
- 10:23Speaker 2: know Dori Jackson and written stories as I've learned more
- 10:27Speaker 2: about him, and also how the team views him, how
- 10:30Speaker 2: his teammates view him.
- 10:31Speaker 1: I think that's all important.
- 10:32Speaker 2: But Dick Fangio talked about it and said, yeah, I
- 10:38Speaker 2: thought he played well this past game. Made a really
- 10:41Speaker 2: nice tackle on the wide out there where they tried
- 10:44Speaker 2: to isolate him, came up with the pick after JP
- 10:48Speaker 2: hit the quarterbacks are and put us in position for
- 10:51Speaker 2: the field goal there. I thought overall he played well,
- 10:53Speaker 2: and he's been doing that lately. About Jordan Davis, who
- 11:01Speaker 2: I can tell you from my observations that he is
- 11:05Speaker 2: very much becoming and growing into a role as a
- 11:09Speaker 2: leader in that locker room.
- 11:11Speaker 1: And I noted that last season.
- 11:13Speaker 2: But his voice resonates and he radiates positivity, and so
- 11:17Speaker 2: Vic vangel has said, let me.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Say here, oh sorry about that.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Jordan is really a fun guy to be around, good personality,
- 11:35Speaker 2: likes being here, comes to work in Joy's work. Yeah,
- 11:38Speaker 2: he has emerged as somewhat of a leader.
- 11:40Speaker 1: He has.
- 11:43Speaker 2: And then I want to get to one final one
- 11:45Speaker 2: here on Cooper Degene talking about how much of a
- 11:49Speaker 2: luxury it is to have Cooper Degene inside against a
- 11:52Speaker 2: really good route runner past week and Lad McConkie and
- 11:55Speaker 2: a number of players that he's gone against, and he said,
- 11:57Speaker 2: it's real important.
- 11:58Speaker 1: That's why we like to keep him in there.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Obviously, when he's in when we're in base, he plays corners,
- 12:03Speaker 2: so that tells you we think he's one of our
- 12:05Speaker 2: top of our two best corners.
- 12:08Speaker 1: And then nickel. We put him in at the nickel.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Spot because he plays that very very well and it's
- 12:13Speaker 2: an important position.
- 12:15Speaker 1: So that was Vic Vangio earlier today.
- 12:19Speaker 2: And then if you guys get an opportunity check out
- 12:22Speaker 2: the story that I wrote on Inside the Birds dot
- 12:24Speaker 2: Com about Brittain Covey talked about how he never wanted
- 12:27Speaker 2: to leave Philadelphia. I got into his role when he
- 12:31Speaker 2: was on the practice squad, the abundance mentality that he
- 12:34Speaker 2: adopted helping other players when he was on the sideline
- 12:38Speaker 2: and others were out on the field playing.
- 12:41Speaker 1: And then I got.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Into kick returns because he's entered the season Alwaly having
- 12:46Speaker 2: returned eleven kickoffs and he's really taken to that pretty well.
- 12:51Speaker 2: And I heard his perspective on what makes it different
- 12:57Speaker 2: or how he's sort of adjusting to it. I got
- 13:00Speaker 2: back into talking to him about his preparation, as he's
- 13:03Speaker 2: as meticulous as they come on punt return meeting.
- 13:06Speaker 1: With his unit.
- 13:07Speaker 2: And you know, you know you read the story because
- 13:11Speaker 2: I don't want to give the give the cliff notes,
- 13:13Speaker 2: but yeah, I mean, I always enjoy my conversations with Brittain.
- 13:17Speaker 1: I learn a lot from talking to him.
- 13:20Speaker 2: And there's a quote in that story that I think
- 13:22Speaker 2: really depicts or best illustrates his football IQ pride and
- 13:29Speaker 2: ownership that he takes in being a return specialist and
- 13:33Speaker 2: his role in sort of deciphering those hidden yards and
- 13:38Speaker 2: altering field position. He's a really valuable player because of
- 13:41Speaker 2: the way that he thinks at the expense of his
- 13:44Speaker 2: average and things like that. So good conversation there, and
- 13:49Speaker 2: he's back. He never his confidence never wigh but he's
- 13:52Speaker 2: back on the fifty three. He's two games in and
- 13:56Speaker 2: he's given the Eagles a little bit of a boost there.
- 13:57Speaker 2: But always fun talking to. It's a great story and
- 14:01Speaker 2: I always learn something new, as I mentioned when I
- 14:04Speaker 2: talk to Britain. So I hope you enjoy that story.
