Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: All right.
- 0:02Speaker 2: We are pleased now to be joined by Jake Croninworth
- 0:04Speaker 2: from his hotel room in Minnesota, where the Potters are
- 0:07Speaker 2: getting set to play the Minnesota Twins. Jake, it's great
- 0:09Speaker 2: to see you. Thanks for joining us.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, more than so, obviously.
- 0:14Speaker 2: It's this has been a very very tight race in
- 0:16Speaker 2: the nationallygu West over the last two weeks. Potters have
- 0:19Speaker 2: pulled into first place a couple of times, Dodgers have
- 0:21Speaker 2: pulled into first place a couple of times. You guys
- 0:23Speaker 2: have been tied a couple of times. How would you
- 0:25Speaker 2: say the vibes in the clubhouse have been over these
- 0:27Speaker 2: last two weeks as things have really tightened up.
- 0:30Speaker 1: No, I mean they've they've been really good. I mean
- 0:33Speaker 1: it's a tough part of the schedule where you know,
- 0:36Speaker 1: not only are we playing, you know, really good teams,
- 0:39Speaker 1: we're playing teams in our division where you know, you
- 0:42Speaker 1: win or lose, it's a full game up or down
- 0:43Speaker 1: on them. So, you know, it was a tough stretch
- 0:48Speaker 1: of the season. We had a good, good homestand once
- 0:51Speaker 1: we got back from LA last week and you know
- 0:55Speaker 1: we're now here on our road trip.
- 0:57Speaker 2: How closely have you guys been watching, you know what
- 1:00Speaker 2: other teams are doing. Obviously most important thing you want
- 1:02Speaker 2: to focus on yourselves, take care of business. But at
- 1:04Speaker 2: the same time, this is the time of year where
- 1:07Speaker 2: how other teams are performing win or lose, does affect
- 1:09Speaker 2: your guys's overall outlook? How much are you guys watching
- 1:12Speaker 2: other teams and paying attention to other games as they happen.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I don't think as much right now, we're still here
- 1:20Speaker 1: at the end of August, but you know, I would
- 1:23Speaker 1: I would say that more happens, you know, towards the
- 1:26Speaker 1: middle of September, when you can you can really see
- 1:29Speaker 1: it going.
- 1:30Speaker 2: On, and when it's affecting you even more absolutely so.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Since the trade deadline, you have had arguably your best
- 1:38Speaker 2: stretch of the season, hitting up round two eighty ops
- 1:41Speaker 2: over eight forty. Obviously, the Potter has made a lot
- 1:44Speaker 2: of new additions, particularly guys at the bottom half of
- 1:47Speaker 2: the lineup, so you're hitting with new guys around you.
- 1:50Speaker 2: How has the trade additions that were made affected the
- 1:53Speaker 2: kind of pitches you're seeing and maybe just how pitchers
- 1:56Speaker 2: are attacking you.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know if if there's any difference in
- 2:01Speaker 1: how pictures are attacking me, or how they're how they're
- 2:06Speaker 1: coming after me. No, I think it's just you know,
- 2:11Speaker 1: I think you're seeing the residual effects, you know, throughout
- 2:15Speaker 1: the lineup, you know, first time through the second time
- 2:18Speaker 1: through the third time there where you know that pictures
- 2:20Speaker 1: happened to work through through nine really good hitters and
- 2:23Speaker 1: guys who are putting together really good at bats, and
- 2:27Speaker 1: you know, I think that's kind of what you're seeing,
- 2:30Speaker 1: you know, towards the end, there's you know, kind of
- 2:33Speaker 1: that last finishing blow. Yeah.
- 2:36Speaker 2: I mean how much has the addition of Ramon Loreano
- 2:38Speaker 2: and Ryana Hern and Freddy for me, you know, energize
- 2:41Speaker 2: the lineup beyond just the numbers and the statistics because
- 2:43Speaker 2: those speak for themselves, But how much has it energized
- 2:45Speaker 2: just you guys.
- 2:46Speaker 1: As a whole. Yeah, No, I mean a ton. I
- 2:50Speaker 1: mean they fit in perfect with our group. They've been
- 2:52Speaker 1: awesome since day once they've been here, and you know,
- 2:56Speaker 1: they're great guys, but they're also really good baseball players.
- 3:01Speaker 1: And I mean, shoot, they've all helped this in a
- 3:03Speaker 1: huge way at some point since they've been over here
- 3:06Speaker 1: and helped us win a game. Yeah.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Absolutely, you know, I want to go into something a
- 3:11Speaker 2: little bit deeper. You are now the third longest tenured
- 3:14Speaker 2: potter on this team, behind only Mana Machado or Fanta
- 3:16Speaker 2: Tist Junior. You've been a teammate of Manny's for six seasons,
- 3:20Speaker 2: and over the course of his career he's been a
- 3:22Speaker 2: little bit of a lightning rot at times. Obviously a
- 3:24Speaker 2: Hall of Fame talent. You know, some of his actions
- 3:26Speaker 2: on the fields and things he said have made him
- 3:28Speaker 2: a little bit of a divisive player. How would you
- 3:31Speaker 2: describe him as a leader, because I think that's something
- 3:33Speaker 2: that gets talked about a lot. But you're in the clubhouse,
- 3:35Speaker 2: you're with him every day. How is Manny as a
- 3:38Speaker 2: leader in your eyes?
- 3:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't think I saw something. I think it
- 3:44Speaker 1: was it last year somebody said he's the most misunderstood
- 3:47Speaker 1: player in baseball, and I think it's true, because you know,
- 3:52Speaker 1: the perception of who you are as a player is
- 3:54Speaker 1: only what people write about you. And if people don't
- 3:57Speaker 1: like you, then people don't like you. It's it's unfortunate
- 4:00Speaker 1: that that's the way it is. But no, I mean,
- 4:05Speaker 1: he couldn't he couldn't be a better teammate, leader and
- 4:10Speaker 1: now he's I mean, obviously he's the longest tenured guy
- 4:13Speaker 1: on our team, and I just I think a lot
- 4:17Speaker 1: of it's his actions as well. You know, he's he's
- 4:19Speaker 1: playing every single day, hurt, healthy, whatever it may be.
- 4:24Speaker 1: He's ready to go every night. And I think that
- 4:26Speaker 1: that alone speaks, you know, a ton about who he
- 4:30Speaker 1: is as a teammate. How would you.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Say maybe his leadership has grown or changed over these
- 4:36Speaker 2: last six seasons, because no one's the same person they
- 4:38Speaker 2: were five years ago.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, you know, we're all we're all all always
- 4:44Speaker 1: evolving throughout our careers and kind of finding our pathway.
- 4:48Speaker 1: And no, I think it's always been there with him.
- 4:53Speaker 1: I think it's just you know, so it's always like
- 4:56Speaker 1: it's yeah, it's different. Yeah, that's kind of hard to
- 5:02Speaker 1: scrap it. He's the same person, but he's in a
- 5:04Speaker 1: different role where it's you know, it's not he hasn't
- 5:07Speaker 1: really changed much. Absolutely. What's something you mentioned?
- 5:11Speaker 2: You know, people sometimes their perceptions are shift shaped by
- 5:15Speaker 2: what's written about someone else. What's something that you know,
- 5:18Speaker 2: you guys see in the clubhouse that maybe the public
- 5:21Speaker 2: doesn't see about manny.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Man. I'm trying not to read too much of the stuff.
- 5:27Speaker 1: But I don't know that. That's a tough one because
- 5:33Speaker 1: I really I don't really know what people are saying
- 5:35Speaker 1: about him. I just know a lot of people don't
- 5:36Speaker 1: like it fair enough.
- 5:39Speaker 2: But like I said, you guys do and that's what
- 5:41Speaker 2: matters most in the end, and you certainly see the
- 5:43Speaker 2: influence in leadership.
- 5:45Speaker 1: You know.
- 5:45Speaker 2: The other part of this is you have played for
- 5:47Speaker 2: three different managers during your tenure as a padre, two
- 5:50Speaker 2: seasons each for Jace Tangler, Bob Melvin, now Mike Schilp.
- 5:53Speaker 2: What is different or unique about Mike schilt just maybe
- 5:56Speaker 2: compared to some the other managers you've had, whether it
- 5:58Speaker 2: be minors or majors.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Yeah, something different or unique. I think. I think the
- 6:11Speaker 1: thing a lot of our group being an older group
- 6:14Speaker 1: and you know, guys who played for a long time
- 6:17Speaker 1: in this league. I think we're all very keen to
- 6:21Speaker 1: what we need to do and get ready to be
- 6:23Speaker 1: done and be ready for the game that night. And
- 6:27Speaker 1: I think the way that Shulty makes our schedule on
- 6:32Speaker 1: a daily basis and then obviously throughout the course of
- 6:34Speaker 1: the year allows us to get that work in but
- 6:37Speaker 1: also be prepared for six forty or seven o'clock, not
- 6:43Speaker 1: just in April, but also in September and hopefully October.
- 6:46Speaker 1: So you know, his scheduling has been really good for
- 6:51Speaker 1: this group's like long term health and you know, throughout
- 6:55Speaker 1: the course of the year and keeping your energy.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Yet one of the things that's noticeable is under Mike Schell.
- 7:01Speaker 2: You know, you guys, the Potters are playing a very
- 7:03Speaker 2: aggressive branded baseball, you know, going first to third, forcing
- 7:06Speaker 2: the issue on you know, maybe some fly balls to
- 7:08Speaker 2: the outfield that maybe you wouldn't go on in the past.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Now you are going we're seeing it aggressive greeds on
- 7:13Speaker 2: balls in the dirt. How much of that is, you know,
- 7:16Speaker 2: his direct influence and just what he preaches versus maybe
- 7:19Speaker 2: an example or an energy level he sets.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I think it's both. I think it's probably more the
- 7:25Speaker 1: standard at which we play. You know, we're gonna play hard,
- 7:29Speaker 1: We're gonna play baseball the right way. Eight Hey, Jake,
- 7:33Speaker 1: sorry about that. Oh no, no worries a kid issue,
- 7:38Speaker 1: no worries all good. Now. I think it's more along
- 7:43Speaker 1: the lines of this is a standard at which we play,
- 7:45Speaker 1: and if we play at these standards on a nightly basis,
- 7:48Speaker 1: we're going to put ourselves in a really good place
- 7:50Speaker 1: to win a game every night.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Absolutely, now that he's here, I do have to ask
- 7:54Speaker 2: you a pitching question. So I think a lot of
- 7:56Speaker 2: people don't realize when the Potter has brought you over
- 7:59Speaker 2: in twenty twenty or at the end of twenty nineteen,
- 8:01Speaker 2: I should say, the intention was to have you be
- 8:03Speaker 2: a two way player. You would thrown in relief in
- 8:05Speaker 2: Durham and we're pretty darn good like Era and the
- 8:08Speaker 2: two's you were pumping Loan nineties and then Covid hit
- 8:12Speaker 2: you stepped up as a second baseman. We're too valuable
- 8:15Speaker 2: there to then put on the mound lead to get
- 8:16Speaker 2: one outing in the majors, which we'll talk about a second.
- 8:19Speaker 2: How much do you kind of wish you had had
- 8:22Speaker 2: the opportunity to maybe be that true two way player
- 8:24Speaker 2: and still get some regular time on the mound.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it would have been I mean, not
- 8:30Speaker 1: only for me, I mean at the time in twenty nineteen,
- 8:33Speaker 1: or I guess go into twenty twenty, there were quite
- 8:36Speaker 1: a few guys doing it, and like guys doing it
- 8:39Speaker 1: like legitimately and like really wanting to take this next step.
- 8:42Speaker 1: And I mean, shoot, there was nobody outside of Showhy
- 8:46Speaker 1: at the time in the big leagues that was doing it,
- 8:49Speaker 1: and you know, for a group of guys to come
- 8:51Speaker 1: up and have the opportunity or actually go out and
- 8:54Speaker 1: execute it, I think that would have been incredible and
- 8:57Speaker 1: great for the game and great for kids that are
- 8:59Speaker 1: going into college that you know. I feel like now
- 9:02Speaker 1: I see there's not as many two way players in
- 9:05Speaker 1: college because it's like, why am I going to go
- 9:06Speaker 1: be a two way guy in college? But I can't
- 9:08Speaker 1: get drafted as a two way guy?
- 9:10Speaker 3: Yeah, Jake, I wanted to ask you a question kind
- 9:12Speaker 3: of summon that up. You closed in college, right, yeah, yeah,
- 9:16Speaker 3: So do you think you could help a reliever out
- 9:20Speaker 3: or could you have closed in the big leagues?
- 9:22Speaker 1: Do you think you could have done that? I think
- 9:24Speaker 1: I think I could have. I thought if I would
- 9:28Speaker 1: have focused on, you know, pitching more, I think I
- 9:33Speaker 1: would have, especially the way the new how guys are
- 9:36Speaker 1: training in the off season and everything. Yeah, with pitch
- 9:40Speaker 1: development and all these other things. I think I would
- 9:44Speaker 1: have really benefited for that because I had a really
- 9:47Speaker 1: good feel for like the ball at the end of
- 9:49Speaker 1: my fingertips and you know, a good feel for my
- 9:51Speaker 1: mechanics and I never even like worked on my mechanics.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Well, I was we almost had you on before the
- 9:58Speaker 3: All Star break, and I'm I question back then was
- 10:01Speaker 3: going to be if you guys traded Robert Sorez, do
- 10:04Speaker 3: you think you could have.
- 10:07Speaker 1: That didn't happen? So, but quick, what.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Do you like playing multiple positions? Because honestly, I know
- 10:17Speaker 3: you're a shortstop by trade, and I think if you
- 10:21Speaker 3: were like a second basement or a first basement all
- 10:24Speaker 3: the time, you'd definitely be an All Star. So I
- 10:27Speaker 3: just think you bounce around and people don't give you
- 10:29Speaker 3: as much credit as you basically deserve. So do you,
- 10:32Speaker 3: like I don't in multiple positions or would you rather
- 10:36Speaker 3: kind of, you know, stick with one position and really
- 10:40Speaker 3: like be the best you could possibly be at that position.
- 10:44Speaker 1: You know, I'm going to give you the politically correct
- 10:47Speaker 1: answer every way. I like both. Like I think, you know,
- 10:53Speaker 1: I've had years that I've been up that you know,
- 10:57Speaker 1: been the big leagues that I've played second the entire time,
- 11:00Speaker 1: and I have been at All Star. And then there's
- 11:02Speaker 1: been years where I've bounced around for the entire year
- 11:05Speaker 1: and I haven't been. But I I I've done the
- 11:10Speaker 1: bouncing around a lot in my career, from when I
- 11:14Speaker 1: was in college to even in the minor leagues a
- 11:17Speaker 1: little bit. But no, I mean, would it be nice? Yeah,
- 11:23Speaker 1: I think so, because it's you're going to sleep every night.
- 11:26Speaker 1: You know, I'm playing second tomorrow. I'm playing second tomorrow.
- 11:28Speaker 1: It's just the same thing over and over where you know,
- 11:32Speaker 1: you go through times. You know, in the past, I've
- 11:34Speaker 1: had it where I'm playing second one night, especially like
- 11:37Speaker 1: in twenty one, i was playing second one night, and
- 11:39Speaker 1: then I'd play first one night, and then I'd be
- 11:41Speaker 1: at shortstop for three and then second for two. So,
- 11:44Speaker 1: I mean, there's those ones are hard because then now
- 11:47Speaker 1: you know, you're get into the field and you're like,
- 11:49Speaker 1: instead of being in your normal routine, you know, now
- 11:52Speaker 1: you got to go get ground balls like shortstop, and
- 11:54Speaker 1: then you got to try to figure out where you're
- 11:55Speaker 1: playing the next day depending on when the manager releases
- 11:58Speaker 1: the lineup, and it's definitely tough.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Well I'm just saying because like, I just feel like
- 12:06Speaker 3: you're good at doing it, but I'm not.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Everybody can do that, but I just.
- 12:10Speaker 3: I'm like, man, this guy would be so like all star,
- 12:14Speaker 3: you know every other year or multiple years. It just
- 12:19Speaker 3: stuck from one place. But it's difficult, even like we're
- 12:23Speaker 3: relieving a guy, you know, when they have bullpen by
- 12:26Speaker 3: committee closing setting up this and that, it's it's difficult.
- 12:30Speaker 1: It's hard. Yeah, no, I agree, you know it's funny.
- 12:34Speaker 1: I want to be clear here too.
- 12:35Speaker 2: What's unique about you, Jake is again, it's not like
- 12:37Speaker 2: you bounce around, but you're like a forty five grade
- 12:39Speaker 2: defender at each position. I mean, you've been a goal
- 12:42Speaker 2: glove caliber second basement. I remember I was covering the
- 12:45Speaker 2: games when you first move over to first base, and
- 12:47Speaker 2: it was against the Dodgers. Remember after the game, they're like,
- 12:49Speaker 2: what who is this crona Worth?
- 12:50Speaker 1: Dude?
- 12:51Speaker 2: You know, you made like three incredible plays at first
- 12:53Speaker 2: And I remember texting some of the Potters scouts who
- 12:56Speaker 2: brought you over, like, yeah, I didn't know who was
- 12:57Speaker 2: an eighty grade first basement.
- 12:58Speaker 1: I mean, it was just fun stuff. All a lot
- 13:00Speaker 1: of people didn't even know the next your pitching days.
- 13:02Speaker 1: People didn't even know I played first in college.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean you bounce around everything first, short second,
- 13:08Speaker 2: you know, And I want to go back to your
- 13:10Speaker 2: pitching days at Durham. Kind of the funny thing here
- 13:12Speaker 2: is you've made eight career appearances as a pitcher professionally,
- 13:16Speaker 2: and I think I've been at five of them because
- 13:17Speaker 2: I saw you a bunch of Durham and I saw
- 13:19Speaker 2: you in San Diego, and I think people like, you know,
- 13:22Speaker 2: need to understand it. It's not just like you were
- 13:24Speaker 2: out there. Kind of like you know, as a twist,
- 13:26Speaker 2: you were a good pitcher. I mean pitching in Triple A.
- 13:28Speaker 2: You know, you had a two, four, five, ERA seven
- 13:31Speaker 2: appearances averaging more than a strikeout printing. And then I
- 13:34Speaker 2: remember when you came in your one major league pitching appearance,
- 13:37Speaker 2: that absolutely insane Dodger game in twenty twenty one, that
- 13:40Speaker 2: went thirteen innings, lasted five hours, and you struck out
- 13:43Speaker 2: Mooky Bets, swinging over eighty nine miles an hour after say,
- 13:46Speaker 2: I would imagine that's a pretty nice feather in your
- 13:48Speaker 2: cap being able to say I struck out Mookey Bet.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Yeah, that was pretty cool. I still have the ball,
- 13:53Speaker 1: So I got my first big strikeout meal.
- 13:57Speaker 2: So I have to ask what some more proud moment
- 13:59Speaker 2: for you that or or you know, one of your
- 14:01Speaker 2: you know, early career home runs or your big you know,
- 14:03Speaker 2: go ahead knock, you know, to knock the dogs.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Definitely the Homers and the knock. Okay, I think a
- 14:09Speaker 1: lot of a lot of the guys in that game
- 14:11Speaker 1: were pretty tuned out because the night before, the night before,
- 14:14Speaker 1: in that game, we had also played sixteen innings. That
- 14:17Speaker 1: was why there was no pitching. One that was crazy.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Two millions.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember, Joe Musgrove was in left field, David
- 14:23Speaker 2: Price came to the plate. It was just a completely
- 14:25Speaker 2: insane game.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's one of those little league games.
- 14:31Speaker 3: You know, you gotta do it.
- 14:33Speaker 2: So yeah, So, Jake, just to wrap up here, I
- 14:35Speaker 2: do have to ask, and we've talked a lot about,
- 14:37Speaker 2: you know, past present. You are the author of one
- 14:41Speaker 2: of the biggest hits in recent Potters history. Again, that
- 14:43Speaker 2: go ahead knock Game four the NLDS in twenty twenty
- 14:46Speaker 2: two to cap the comeback and ultimately knock the Dodgers
- 14:49Speaker 2: out of the postseason. When you're walking around the gas
- 14:51Speaker 2: lamp or North Park or downtown, how often do people
- 14:54Speaker 2: still bring that up for you?
- 14:55Speaker 1: And do they buy you drinks? No? Not not really, many
- 15:02Speaker 1: drinks drinks are expensive, Yeah, drinks. Drinks are godslap. I
- 15:10Speaker 1: would say once every once in a while, Yeah, not
- 15:15Speaker 1: too more when it was back in like twenty three
- 15:18Speaker 1: that it was brought up a lot more than Yeah.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Was a weird few walking around being famous. Because you've
- 15:23Speaker 2: been more of an under the radar guy throughout most
- 15:25Speaker 2: of your career.
- 15:26Speaker 1: I'm still extremely under the rail. Well that's good to know.
- 15:31Speaker 3: Yeah, so I'm a bold prediction and people don't like it,
- 15:35Speaker 3: but I have a feeling you this is going to
- 15:37Speaker 3: be the year you guys win the division. And I
- 15:40Speaker 3: know you're in second right now, but I've I've had
- 15:43Speaker 3: a pretty good luck the last couple of years, telling
- 15:45Speaker 3: my kid that's a huge baseball neut knows everything about baseball.
- 15:49Speaker 3: He knows guys in Double A and Triple A and
- 15:51Speaker 3: prospects like top ten in every position or in every
- 15:54Speaker 3: team too so, and I'm like, I feel like it's
- 15:57Speaker 3: San Diego's year, especially after the trade deadline, And do
- 16:00Speaker 3: you guys feel that way in the clubouse that it's
- 16:02Speaker 3: kind of like this is just a different year than
- 16:05Speaker 3: the past years.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you know what AJ did at the deadline,
- 16:10Speaker 1: Like it's not only was it like Okay, what is
- 16:14Speaker 1: he going to do? What is he going to do?
- 16:15Speaker 1: It's like a jolt, like, Okay, it's Mason Miller and
- 16:20Speaker 1: you know wherever he's going to pitch at the end
- 16:22Speaker 1: of the game, like having to face him in the
- 16:24Speaker 1: seventh inning. Can't imagine that. And then it's you know,
- 16:28Speaker 1: Ramon Loreano and then and he just keeps going and
- 16:31Speaker 1: it's ohearn and for me and it's just like, you know,
- 16:35Speaker 1: we get these guys. And I was telling Kyle's you know,
- 16:39Speaker 1: they fit in with our group so well. The first
- 16:41Speaker 1: day when they got there, it was almost like they
- 16:42Speaker 1: had been there for the whole year, which is to
- 16:45Speaker 1: me the most important thing, especially at the deadline. And
- 16:50Speaker 1: you know, they're also really really good players, so you know,
- 16:54Speaker 1: I mean, we're in a great spot. You know, for
- 16:57Speaker 1: us to have the opportunity to put ourselves in this
- 17:00Speaker 1: position is really important, and we've done it and we
- 17:04Speaker 1: just got to finish the season strong.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Awesome, absolutely, all right, Well, Jake, we know you've got
- 17:09Speaker 2: to get to the ballpark here in a little bit.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Thank you so much for joining us. We really really
- 17:12Speaker 1: appreciate it, and best of luck this series. Awesome. Thanks
