- 1:05Don Armstrong: Or in your world, I'm Nod Nortzmora.
- 1:10Don Armstrong: So we're having the uh the uh national anthem right now, and uh we're just talking right over it because you know, as much as I would like to stand and salute the flag and do all of the great things that we should be doing, we have a program that uh actually will ultimately go to a podcast, and it just doesn't work all that well.
- 1:29Don Armstrong: So I understand.
- 1:31Don Armstrong: Yeah, so I I apologize ahead of time for anything that may happen while you're on the air with us and everything.
- 1:38Don Armstrong: It's a disclaimer up front.
- 1:39Don Armstrong: It is a disclaimer up front.
- 1:41Don Armstrong: Now you're at home watching on our live stream, which is currently on YouTube, Facebook, and in real time.com.
- 1:49Don Armstrong: Well, uh, if we look a little off, well, that's because of the camera issues that we've been trying to deal with here.
- 1:57Don Armstrong: So we apologize for that.
- 1:58Don Armstrong: We apologize for living today.
- 2:01Don Armstrong: Of course.
- 2:01Don Armstrong: But uh that's another story for another day.
- 2:04Don Armstrong: We'll go to church for that one.
- 2:06Don Armstrong: Ladies and gentlemen, here he is, Rick Neely.
- 2:10Don Armstrong: Good morning.
- 2:11Don Armstrong: Okay, take it away.
- 2:12Don Armstrong: Now, if if if if if you were standing in front of an audience of a thousand people here, which you do often, don't you?
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: I do.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: I'm I got the pleasure of actually doing the awards and uh speaking to our membership every year.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Uh it's I enjoy it.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: It's a passion.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: It's good, and I love sharing my passion.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Uh I I appreciate y'all coming.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Uh, over and over again.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Uh and getting to spend some some time with you.
- 2:46Don Armstrong: This is it's an educational experience, isn't it?
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: It's uh no, I refer to it as a life lesson.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Life lesson.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: I'm a glutton for punishment, and here we go again.
- 2:56Don Armstrong: There we go again.
- 2:56Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 2:57Don Armstrong: Well, it's great to see you.
- 2:58Don Armstrong: Good to see you.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: It always is.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Do you live here?
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: No, I live out in Midland.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: I live in Midland.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: 300 miles west of here.
- 3:05Don Armstrong: Is that all it is?
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Just about that.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:07Don Armstrong: Well, so in other words, this is kind of like the halfway point between Houston and Midland, the stop off here in Granbury.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, if you go through Granbury, you're you're lost.
- 3:19Mike Marrs: That's really not too bad because it's like two 250 for us to get up here.
- 3:23Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 3:24Mike Marrs: It's about what takes gas?
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Miles.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's miles.
- 3:28Don Armstrong: A little over 250.
- 3:29Don Armstrong: 250.
- 3:29Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 3:30Don Armstrong: But it took us five hours to get here.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Well, that's traffic.
- 3:33Don Armstrong: No, actually, it's not.
- 3:34Don Armstrong: It's uh, you know, we don't have a big highway like you've got from Midland to Granbury.
- 3:39Don Armstrong: And we take the we take scenic.
- 3:41Don Armstrong: We take the back route through Waco.
- 3:43Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 3:44Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 3:44Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 3:44Don Armstrong: That way.
- 3:45Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 3:46Mike Marrs: 71.
- 3:46Mike Marrs: There's a couple of ways, and even all they all end up going like this.
- 3:49Mike Marrs: Absolutely.
- 3:50Don Armstrong: So I would imagine that uh all of the participants in today's event come from all over the state and beyond.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: They do.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: We have some people in here from Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, uh, New Mexico, as well as Texas.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: So congratulations.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: We have a we have a very diverse, we're not just we're organized in the state of Texas.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Therefore, the Lone Star Street Roder Association.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: But we welcome everyone.
- 4:20Don Armstrong: I mean, we You know, it must be it must be a real problem trying to read the minutes every month to everybody from all over the world.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Well, no, uh actually we do quarterly, quarterly meetings among the directors and such.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: And uh as far as the membership, they just want to know what day the the event's gonna be.
- 4:41Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: You know.
- 4:43Don Armstrong: Is this the only event that you actually physically sponsor?
- 4:47Don Armstrong: This is it.
- 4:47Don Armstrong: This is it.
- 4:48Don Armstrong: This is it.
- 4:48Don Armstrong: This is the other thing.
- 4:49Don Armstrong: So all of the other events that these guys go to, that's a completely different thing that you guys really aren't involved in.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Well, do we go we go to support those other events?
- 4:59Don Armstrong: So do I mean do you promote the other events?
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: We do.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: If they get us the information in our monthly newsletter, then all of that information is shared throughout our membership.
- 5:10Jeff Dziekan: But Hewlett Park offers other clubs as well, not just uh Lomesar.
- 5:15Jeff Dziekan: Correct.
- 5:15Jeff Dziekan: I mean, because I see flyers for it, I see things on Facebook that you know come to Hewlett and it's maybe a corporate player or Chevrolet specific.
- 5:22Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 5:22Jeff Dziekan: Correct.
- 5:23Don Armstrong: So I heard there was a uh nasty rumor that they're gonna do away with the grass and turn this into a great big showpiece on asphalt for all of the car clubs we get.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Well, we're actually the only group that they allow to park on the grass.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Oh wow.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: If you've noticed around the park, it's don't park in the grass.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Don't drive in the grass.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Well, look around you.
- 5:45Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: We're all in the grass sidewalk.
- 5:47Don Armstrong: I cannot even imagine having a car show this size and not parking in the grass.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: No, I mean, uh, so we're we're a family Christian base organization.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: And when it in its early times, it was like at Fort Fisher in Waco forever.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: That's a huge park right there on the Brazos River.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: And then we went to Fredericksburg to Ladybird Johnson Park.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: We were there for 13 years.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: This is actually our tenth year in Grand Bridge.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Oh, really?
- 6:17Don Armstrong: And that brings up the the question is have you and I obviously you've been at other places, but you continue to come back here.
- 6:25Don Armstrong: Who wouldn't?
- 6:25Don Armstrong: Why wouldn't I uh there there is that.
- 6:28Don Armstrong: And uh also Tammy Dooley.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: Why wouldn't you?
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: Does that too?
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Tammy Dooley is amazing.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Uh I had a a uh friendship with her and her husband Mike when they were in Midland years ago.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: So we were already Lone Star was already here in Granbury, and Tammy came to run the Visit Granberry office, the visit.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: From Midland.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: From Midland, yeah.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she was smart.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: She came and found some trees and water.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: And uh but she uh she came over and she took over this, and then when she found out I was involved with Lone Star and what we were already here, oh, it was like a reunion.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: And the city just makes it s makes us so welcoming.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Uh they honored us with a distinguished a distinguished honor they hand out once a year.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Lone Star received that from them one year.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: And Tammy will tell you that we are their we're their favorite event of all the events that they hold.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: And your hours too.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Yes, of course.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Well, I I believe her, Don.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: Good man.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but no, uh between the the city and and the county, uh the CVB, they just they literally roll out the red card.
- 7:53Don Armstrong: So you've been to the other events uh at other venues.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 7:56Don Armstrong: What makes this, other than what you've just spoken of, what makes this different?
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: This feels like coming home.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: I don't know how better to put it.
- 8:07Don Armstrong: Well you can't, because I mean this is this is your only event every year, and clearly you have talked to your membership.
- 8:14Don Armstrong: How many members do you have?
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: Membership right now is just over 500.
- 8:18Don Armstrong: That's good.
- 8:19Don Armstrong: That's that's that's impressive.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: It's uh you know, attrition has taken its toll and things like that.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: Our membership used to be well over 2,000.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Uh uh I hear at one time it was approaching 3,000.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: But through attrition and whatnot, so to bolster the membership.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: Lone Star founded was founded as a pre-49 organization.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Well, that that was all real well and good in the 70s because that was the error.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Correct.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: The gentlemen that uh the empty nesters, the folks that had enough uh money to to spend on their cars.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: They could go back and they could build that car that they wanted in high school that they couldn't do in high school.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: So they're up there now, they have the time and the means to do so, so they started building this.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: Well, that's all pre-49 stuff.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: That rocked along for many, many, many years.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Then they they bumped it prior to me being on the board, they bumped it to pre-73.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: You know, the end of when the government got involved in all of our vehicles and started choking them all out.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Uh so we rocked along there for a good long while.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: Uh, a couple of years ago, as a board, we put it before the membership to what do you want to do?
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: We need to do something because if we do nothing, we're gonna end up not being here anymore.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: But we need to do something.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: So we laid out some choices to the membership, sent ballots to everybody that was on our mailing list, and like your local and national elections, about 20% of them voted.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: And they voted for a rolling 30-year calendar.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: Now, this year, if you have a 96 model vehicle, you can come into the show.
- 10:15Don Armstrong: So ultimately, if I'm still living, I'll be able to bring my 2001 Corvette here and show it.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: If that's what you want to do.
- 10:24Don Armstrong: Yeah, yeah, I don't see too many Corvettes in here.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: We have trailer parking.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 10:29Don Armstrong: If you can't get that guy, I I I get it and I appreciate the humor.
- 10:34Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 10:35Don Armstrong: But uh, you know, we drove the Corvette up here.
- 10:37Don Armstrong: Jeff Jeff was my sidekick, my ride and shotgun on it, and yeah, and it did quite well and got 30 miles to the gallon.
- 10:44Don Armstrong: Wow.
- 10:45Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 10:45Don Armstrong: So uh I I'm I'm doing ISI am bragging.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: Yes, as you as well as you should.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: No, everybody has their car passion.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's just everybody has their car passion.
- 10:55Don Armstrong: And you know, it's funny because your car passion, at least for me, has evolved since I got into this in 1977.
- 11:02Don Armstrong: Yes.
- 11:03Don Armstrong: And um, you know, car show we didn't have cruise ins that I was aware of.
- 11:09Don Armstrong: We had a car show, and yes, it was in a park, and it was a big deal for the club that I was in.
- 11:16Don Armstrong: And it was basically for club members.
- 11:19Don Armstrong: I mean, if somebody wanted to come and show their car, that was a that was okay.
- 11:22Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 11:22Don Armstrong: But the whole idea of cruise-ins and car shows has evolved.
- 11:27SPEAKER_04: It has.
- 11:28Don Armstrong: You don't, you know, you the we have in Houston a thing called Autorama, I'm sure you're familiar with that group.
- 11:34Don Armstrong: And it's a great show.
- 11:35Don Armstrong: And the problem that I see, and other people have seen it as well, is it's the same cars over and over again.
- 11:42Don Armstrong: Back in the day when I was exposed to it, it was different.
- 11:46Don Armstrong: You go and there was guys building their cars and showing them, well, I'm not gonna show it this year, uh uh, and somebody else would take their place.
- 11:55Don Armstrong: It's not so much that way at an Autorama anymore.
- 11:58Don Armstrong: It's the same guys pretty much over and over with, and let's face it, we're all none of us are getting any younger.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: No, we're not.
- 12:04Don Armstrong: And so it's kind of stalled where it where it is right now with the show cars.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: And that's a shame.
- 12:09Don Armstrong: It is.
- 12:10Don Armstrong: But you don't see as many clubs showing as a club within Autorama.
- 12:15Jeff Dziekan: Well, it's also technology too, because our day it was hands-on, bolt, wrench, turn the wrench, pull the motor, shade tree.
- 12:22Jeff Dziekan: Now it's all computer digitized.
- 12:24Jeff Dziekan: I'm gonna look at YouTube, how to do this.
- 12:26Jeff Dziekan: The cars are already set up computer generated or computer uh driven, so that is what you have to overcome.
- 12:33Jeff Dziekan: Well, and they're not interested in it.
- 12:35Mike Marrs: And the car club aspect of it, we we used to do a feature, try to feature car clubs to kind of help them grow a little bit.
- 12:41Mike Marrs: But COVID pretty well down our area killed out most of the clubs.
- 12:45Mike Marrs: Most of them, if they'll even answer the phone or an email, will tell you, no, we just never recovered from COVID.
- 12:51Mike Marrs: I mean, they just aren't as active anymore.
- 12:54Mike Marrs: Well, no.
- 12:54Mike Marrs: No, and they're not.
- 12:55Jeff Dziekan: That to me is is an excuse.
- 12:57Jeff Dziekan: That to me is is an excuse, and it's a lame one.
- 12:59Jeff Dziekan: It I'm and okay, Jeff.
- 13:01Jeff Dziekan: I'll pass that along.
- 13:02Jeff Dziekan: Um because if you're interested in it and you really are a car enthusiast and you want to build a car, you're gonna do it.
- 13:08Mike Marrs: Well, no, no, I'm talking about as far as the club aspect of it goes, they they just they just don't do that.
- 13:14Mike Marrs: There might be two or three of them get together, but as far as twenty or thirty, they just don't seem to do it.
- 13:19Don Armstrong: Well, I will say this that uh we uh have been involved in uh several events that these car clubs have.
- 13:26Don Armstrong: Um and uh there's one in particular, uh the one down in um that Woody used at the end of the year.
- 13:33Don Armstrong: Woody, yeah, yeah.
- 13:34Don Armstrong: Yeah, waterfront.
- 13:35Don Armstrong: But it but the cars were like these.
- 13:38Don Armstrong: And the guys were passionate about the cars.
- 13:40Don Armstrong: It wasn't a club per se, but it was a cruise in that gained popularity amongst these, which I'm sure that these guys, some of them have probably been to that event.
- 13:48Don Armstrong: I'm sure they have a waterfront car show.
- 13:49Don Armstrong: Anyway, it's a beautiful setting right there on Galveston Bay, and um and this restaurant that's kind of associated with it has enough room for, I don't know, a hundred cars or so.
- 14:00Don Armstrong: And uh it was a nice small event, but it's not a club per se that put it on.
- 14:07Don Armstrong: It would be like a Lone Star Street Rod Association.
- 14:10Don Armstrong: A promoter event, yeah, yeah.
- 14:11Don Armstrong: Where uh everybody uh belongs to the club.
- 14:14Don Armstrong: They get word that there's going to be a an event going on.
- 14:17Don Armstrong: And I think that that too is an an issue in the fact that who do you reach that has that green Ford and he he he loves his car and he spends a lot of money on it and a lot of time on it, but he doesn't know.
- 14:29Don Armstrong: I remember when I first got into Corvette Club of Houston, that was 1977.
- 14:34Don Armstrong: I didn't know anything about it.
- 14:36Don Armstrong: It was a little bitty box ad in the Houston Chronicle, and go to the meeting, and I went to the meeting, and they welcomed me and made me part of the club right away, and I paid my 20 bucks or whatever it was, and I went to their events, but they were far and few between.
- 14:50Don Armstrong: Now it's now it's imports.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: Well, and what I see that really I guess bugs me to the bone is there's so many 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 year old boys and girls out there that aren't even interested in getting a driver's license.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: And that's true.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: And I mean, I'm thinking, well, uh they'd whole lot rather sit in the back seat or the front seat while mom and dad drive them around or their buddies drive them around while they're talking with their thumbs.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: And to me, that's I I I just see that as this is.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: How old is your son?
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: Forty-two.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, forty-two.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: The the one with the little roadster.
- 15:35Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 15:36Don Armstrong: So he grew up in the 80s.
- 15:38Jeff Dziekan: Born in the 80s.
- 15:40Jeff Dziekan: But well th that that's a that's a trick question because he grew up with his dad having hot rods and being part of the Lone Star Street Rod Association.
- 15:46Jeff Dziekan: Now I have two girls, so it's well, yeah.
- 15:48Jeff Dziekan: So he was automatically born into it, so to speak.
- 15:52Jeff Dziekan: And I was as well.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: Exposed very early.
- 15:54Don Armstrong: Did you ever have him wrench on your car?
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: We wrench on his together.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:59Don Armstrong: Mine runs.
- 16:01Don Armstrong: Well, that one that he was driving here today looks like it runs too.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: It runs really, really, really.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: It's a pretty car.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: It's a beautiful car.
- 16:08Don Armstrong: And I said to you, and we've all talked about it, that's a Boyd Coddington car.
- 16:11Don Armstrong: It looked like a Boyd Coddington.
- 16:13Don Armstrong: It's uh there were some cues taken from the Boyd Coddington era in that car.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: So I'm gonna say I think it's a Boyd Coddington knockoff.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, I mean honestly.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: I didn't want to say that, but yes.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: Well, no, I mean, Boyd Coddington was a genius.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, he was he was the Harley Earl of street rotting.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: In my mind.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: And I pick on Harley Earl, father of your Corvette.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: Well, he was also the father of my 57 Buick.
- 16:43Don Armstrong: You still have the 57 Buick?
- 16:44Don Armstrong: I bet I do.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: Is it a nail head if he ate in it?
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: The nail head is the original nail head is still in it.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: And we did get a fuel-injected six-pack on it.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: Oh, gosh.
- 16:56Jeff Dziekan: So I've got a Buick as well, and I carried a six-pack in it.
- 16:59Jeff Dziekan: Well, lightweight.
- 17:03Jeff Dziekan: You bet.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: It is light, really light.
- 17:06Don Armstrong: So um tell me about the Buick.
- 17:10Don Armstrong: I I didn't know.
- 17:11Don Armstrong: Is it here?
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: No.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: It's not here.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: Why not?
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: Well, because I'm in the process of redoing.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: Oh, I see.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: Okay, well, that's a good excuse.
- 17:20Don Armstrong: And is it a what what Buick bottle is it in 57?
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: It is a Buick special two-door post.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: Post car nice.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: Supposedly 74,000 hardtops built and only 6,400 postcars.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: And uh original paint on it?
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: Oh no.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: No.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: No, no.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: Originally it was oh yeah.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: That's a 56 Oldsmobile, I believe.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: That is an unbelievable build.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: That's Jeff, Jeff Kenzer built that car.
- 17:52Don Armstrong: You know, and and the other and that's the other thing, too, is there are guys here that have actually built these cars, and then there are other guys here uh that have bought cars that are passionate about their car.
- 18:01Don Armstrong: They sold what they had and they got something upgraded that somebody else did.
- 18:06Don Armstrong: I'm all into that, especially at my age.
- 18:11Mike Marrs: Well, not only that, it it you you guys get to a certain age, okay.
- 18:15Mike Marrs: I've had this for 10 years, 20 years.
- 18:17Mike Marrs: I want something different, like you say, but I don't at this age want to get into a two or three year build and crawling underneath the car and just gonna sit out from underneath it because nobody will help me get up.
- 18:29Mike Marrs: And that's what keeps car builders in business.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: Keeps them in business.
- 18:33Don Armstrong: And that that that business itself has expanded tremendously.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: It has, and beautiful work.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, stuff that I have never dreamed of.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: Shows up, and here that it is.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's some outstanding business.
- 18:47Don Armstrong: The one thing that I I have noticed at this show this year is that we got here, Mars got here on Thursday, and there weren't very many cars here.
- 18:57Don Armstrong: And yesterday uh we drove by and there weren't very man.
- 19:01Don Armstrong: We got here this morning, weren't many cars here.
- 19:03Don Armstrong: There are more cars that are actually cruising in today that I think that were stationary last night when they moved in.
- 19:10Don Armstrong: Or in a trailer in a hotel parking lot.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: And they're parked in the hotel parking lots and this and that and the other.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: When we shut down registration last night, we had 152 that had picked up.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: So there was already 152 cars.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: Some of them, as you witnessed, were here Thursday saving their favorite spots.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: And so on and so forth.
- 19:31Don Armstrong: There's some very interesting and creative things that they use now to uh save this spot.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's not just a cone or a lawn chair.
- 19:37Don Armstrong: Correct.
- 19:39Jeff Dziekan: The guy had his mother-in-law tied to a tree out here.
- 19:41Jeff Dziekan: I wouldn't doubt it.
- 19:43Jeff Dziekan: Arms were flapping like one of those weekly things.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: Part leave one of the kids out here.
- 19:48Don Armstrong: So tell me about today's event.
- 19:49Don Armstrong: Uh, how long does it go on today?
- 19:51Don Armstrong: Is it over with tonight?
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: No, this is a three-day event.
- 19:55Don Armstrong: Okay, so Friday, Saturday, Sunday?
- 19:56Don Armstrong: Right.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we we opened up registration at 10 o'clock yesterday morning.
- 20:00Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 20:01Don Armstrong: So you couldn't pre-register?
- 20:03Don Armstrong: Certainly.
- 20:03Don Armstrong: Oh, okay.
- 20:04Don Armstrong: Certainly did.
- 20:05Don Armstrong: No, but I'm saying before the event even started.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: Pre-registered way back when there's people that'll pre-register for next year during this event.
- 20:14Don Armstrong: Where is it going to be next year?
- 20:15Don Armstrong: Well, right.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: Right here at home in Granberry.
- 20:20Don Armstrong: I had to say it.
- 20:20Don Armstrong: It was there.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: No, no, no.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: We'll be right here at Granberry.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: We're having it at your place.
- 20:25Jeff Dziekan: Okay, come on down.
- 20:26Jeff Dziekan: We're going to park on your lawn.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:28Don Armstrong: The old folks will love it.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: But uh no, and then today is when we get the vast majority of foot traffic, local traffic.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: Where's folks coming out of the Metroplex, come down?
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because folks work Friday and they want to come down, they want to see the event, even if they don't have a way to participate in the event.
- 20:46Don Armstrong: And there's no charge to get in for this.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: No, absolutely not.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: It's open to the public.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: So we'll rock along here till it gets plenty hot, around three, four o'clock, and people will start drifting out.
- 20:58Don Armstrong: And we know where several bars are.
- 20:59Don Armstrong: We visited one last night.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's uh if you're looking for something good to eat or drink, you're in Granberry and you go without, it's on you.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's there's so much, so many good restaurants.
- 21:12Don Armstrong: We're thinking about opening the in-wheel time, good time restaurant and bar.
- 21:17Don Armstrong: What do you think?
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: I think you'll I think it'll work.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: I'll I'll patronize it.
- 21:20Don Armstrong: Will you?
- 21:20Don Armstrong: I'll be there.
- 21:21Don Armstrong: You'll actually be there.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: Once a year when he comes in, he'll stop in and no, at least four times a year I'll come, I'll come see you.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: Because we're in town at least four times a year.
- 21:30Don Armstrong: Every quarter.
- 21:31Don Armstrong: Rick, I I know this is a long distance call from Sarah, and she hooked us up, but uh do you think you could drive in from Midland?
- 21:39Don Armstrong: It's only what three hours?
- 21:40Don Armstrong: Four and a half.
- 21:41Don Armstrong: Four and a half hours from Midland.
- 21:42Don Armstrong: 300 miles?
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:44Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 21:45Don Armstrong: Piece of cake.
- 21:46Don Armstrong: I've done it before.
- 21:48Don Armstrong: What did you what did you what did you do for a living in your real life?
- 21:51Don Armstrong: I'm still doing it.
- 21:52Don Armstrong: Are you?
- 21:53Don Armstrong: What are you doing?
- 21:53Don Armstrong: I'm in highway construction.
- 21:54Don Armstrong: Are you?
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:56unknown: Yeah.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: Build highway.
- 21:57Don Armstrong: I don't know whether to love you, hug you, or hate you.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Not in Houston, well no, it's a transition.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: We can be friends and then you can be mad at me, but when we're done, you're gonna be so happy.
- 22:07Don Armstrong: Well, okay, then and now that we've opened that can of war, let me ask you something.
- 22:11Don Armstrong: Why is it that all of the construction manages to happen during afternoon drive, morning drive, or they close a lane down and it lasts for a week and as opposed to doing it in an overnight period?
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: It only seemed that way to you, Dom, because that's the only time you get out of the house.
- 22:26Don Armstrong: There you go.
- 22:27Don Armstrong: That's a good that's a good enough answer, and uh, I'll buy that.
- 22:30Don Armstrong: Amen.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: And in large cities like Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth, a lot of that work's done at night as to not interfere with the flow of traffic during the day so people can get to and from work.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: So they can still have their three-hour commute each way.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: Over that 12 miles.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: Instead of it instead of it being a four hour, you can still keep it your regular three hours.
- 22:51Mike Marrs: I got that.
- 22:52Mike Marrs: I got that.
- 22:53Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 22:53Mike Marrs: All right.
- 22:53Don Armstrong: So let me let me dig into this just a little bit more.
- 22:56Don Armstrong: I know this is not car rel car show related, but well it is because we all drive on roads.
- 23:00Don Armstrong: Well, that's true.
- 23:01Don Armstrong: Um well, how do they let those contracts?
- 23:05Don Armstrong: So, in other words, okay, we're gonna rebuild this part of the highway, and we're gonna give you five years to complete it.
- 23:13Don Armstrong: I how does how does that work?
- 23:16Don Armstrong: Obviously, the public's not concerned or uh has a word on that.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: No, the public does not, because the public's not building it.
- 23:23Don Armstrong: Well, that's true.
- 23:24Don Armstrong: Okay, so why why why does it take so long to build a road or a highway or repair it or fix it or whatever?
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: I can tell you, I'll cut it real short for you.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: Yes, there is so much more science and engineering that goes into building a road than what the general public would think.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: They just see that group out there spreading dirt, and then they're gonna put some black stuff up on top of it.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: Well, that dirt has to meet certain specifications.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: So it has to come from a quality source.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: So you've got to go find the source.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: Then you've got to manufacture the material within specifications.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: Then when you place it, it has to be placed within specifications to reach densities.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: And then you've got to wait for the inspector to come out and say, okay.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: Well, actually, the inspector is supposed to be there through the entire process.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 24:11Mike Marrs: So so you're not just you going and digging up some dirt.
- 24:14Mike Marrs: No.
- 24:14Mike Marrs: You're having to make it.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: You have you have to grow dirt what the Lord gave us, and you've got to make it fit within the specifications.
- 24:25Mike Marrs: And that's with what we think is right, not what the Lord is.
- 24:28Mike Marrs: And that's one thing we're not making.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: And I mean, there's some some fantastic engineers, and there's some that should have never got their stamp.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: But regardless of all of that, so once you get the dirt down, as y'all referred to it, then comes the black stuff.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: Well, there's so much, there's tenfold amount of science in creating the correct black surface for the environment and the traffic.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: So they do traffic studies for years prior to what they're gonna do in a certain piece of I-10 or 45 or 10.
- 25:08Don Armstrong: But you really find you do realize that none of that changes my mind.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: I I understand.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: But I you know, the should just show a little bit more compassion when you're going through that.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: So don't be mad at the guys out there.
- 25:24Don Armstrong: So there is a PR issue in your business when it comes to public relations education to people like me that drive by the construction site going on to these numbers.
- 25:38Don Armstrong: Call Austin.
- 25:40Don Armstrong: That's right.
- 25:44Don Armstrong: So how many employees do you have?
- 25:46SPEAKER_00: We have four, just over 400.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:52Don Armstrong: That's a lot.
- 25:53Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 25:53Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 25:54Don Armstrong: And are you still based in Midland?
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: Yes, based out of Midland, Odessa.
- 25:58Don Armstrong: So do you do most of your work out there around that area?
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we try to stay within a hundred, hundred and fifty mile radius.
- 26:05Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 26:05Don Armstrong: And uh I'm fascinated by this, and I don't mean to take away from the car show, but I've never asked these questions for somebody that's a road builder.
- 26:13Mike Marrs: That knows.
- 26:14Mike Marrs: That knows.
- 26:15Don Armstrong: So now, Mars, we always looking for guests.
- 26:18Don Armstrong: Ding! There he is.
- 26:20Mike Marrs: There you go.
- 26:21Don Armstrong: Because seriously, I mean, talking about PR, you got Tammy Dooley, it seems to me that your industry would do well by hiring somebody to say, hey, this is the reason that it's taking so long, because nobody ever explains it.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: Well, each each region of Texdot.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: The Texas Highway Department, each region actually has a PR person.
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: And um It's not evidently they don't they're not up to your standard.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: No, they're not.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: Because I'm in that business.
- 26:53SPEAKER_00: So I I can give you a contact for start your next career.
- 26:57Don Armstrong: Well, it would have to be at the state legislature level because they need to hire an outside PR firm that isn't paid for by the state because they're gonna give the same state answers, you know, all the time.
- 27:09Don Armstrong: But a outside PR firm is gonna go, okay, like your road construction thing, you gotta do all the research, you gotta put out all of the feelers, do all the right things ahead of time.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: Now you want me to tell you the real thorn in the barrel?
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: Tell me.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: The whole highway construction industry lives and dies by low bid.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: Well, I know I I mean it's the you still gotta come up to the specification.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: How would you change it?
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: If you had could change that, I would retire.
- 27:46Mike Marrs: They'll fix that.
- 27:47Mike Marrs: Okay.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: So if that's the case, there's an opening, Don.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: There's an opening.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: I've got over 40 years in the industry, and uh I've made a good living.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: I've my family's done well, and I'm grateful for it.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: Uh when I figured out that I wanted a sustainable income, I thought, well, goods and services.
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: What does everybody have to have?
- 28:11Don Armstrong: A road to get there, buddy.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: Everybody's gonna eat.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: I didn't want to work in a grocery store.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: So I ended up on a highway crew, and I started from I started on a show, started on a piece of equipment, and now I'm an upper manager.
- 28:26Don Armstrong: Let me ask you something.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: American drink.
- 28:28Don Armstrong: What do you hear a thing?
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: From a privately owned, family-owned company that's been around.
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: We're fixing to celebrate our 75th anniversary.
- 28:36Don Armstrong: That's a brand new road grader, and it's got all of the new stuff on it.
- 28:40Don Armstrong: Let me have a little bit of time with it.
- 28:42Don Armstrong: Just 30 minutes or so.
- 28:44Don Armstrong: You ever feel that?
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: No.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: Been there, done that.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: Been there done that.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: So I constant most of my concentration goes towards the environmental now.
- 28:59SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm an environmental specialist.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: Uh I transitioned in into that.
- 29:06Don Armstrong: So are you the person that says, uh, the toad frogs over there, we we gotta lay off of this for a while until we figure that out.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: I'm the guy that argues with a toad frog person from the state that says I have to.
- 29:19SPEAKER_00: Gotcha.
- 29:19SPEAKER_00: And I give me plaws.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: Tell me why.
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: So we it's funny you say that.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: Oh man.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: It's not funny.
- 29:27SPEAKER_00: So there's a particular sand dune lizard.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: It was on the endangered, but then it stepped off, and it's on the one below that, and this, and that, and the other.
- 29:40SPEAKER_00: So we have a project out in the sand hills.
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: Imagine that in West Texas, where all the sand mines for fracking is coming from.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: And we have to the state of Texas actually has on their payroll a person that's a I can't even say it.
- 30:01SPEAKER_00: A frog counter.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: Lizard counter.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: Lizard Wrangler.
- 30:05Mike Marrs: Lizard Wrangler.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: When I heard that, I'm picturing this dude in shaps, a cowboy hat, oh, yeah, and a rope.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: And so the big So they go, hey, lizard lizards.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: So we asked a big question.
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: Have you seen any?
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: No.
- 30:24SPEAKER_00: They're endangered.
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: They don't even know that they're out there.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: But our project is currently shut down for 30 days.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: Looking for lizards.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: Because they're still hunting lizards.
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: So that aren't out there.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: The endangered lizard that may not even exist anymore.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: The endangered lizard that's there's a chance.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: No, he they still exist.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: There's a there is this lizard.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: There's a possibility, not probability, possibility, he might come into that range of sand dunes, so we don't want to disturb it.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: But we need you to widen the road 48 feet into the sand dunes.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: But let's don't disturb the sand dunes.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: Without disturbing the sand.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: Maybe you need to build something like the Chaffalaya Bridge, you know, an elevated that goes over the dunes.
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: Believe me, somebody did there's somebody who's already offered that.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: God I was kidding.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, they've gone from 60 miles of conveyor belt, elevated conveyor belt to transfer sand to minimize the footprint in this particular part of the state.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: Sixty miles of conveyor belt.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: Your government at work.
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: So what is it like the government didn't do that?
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: Private industry did it because they couldn't get around.
- 31:46Jeff Dziekan: We ought to have a sandwich.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: So welcome to the car show.
- 31:49Jeff Dziekan: That's it.
- 31:50Jeff Dziekan: Uh it and it it is what's the name of that lizard?
- 31:52Jeff Dziekan: Sand lizard.
- 31:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sure.
- 31:54Jeff Dziekan: Wasn't it a Beetlejuice?
- 31:55Jeff Dziekan: Is that the thing that comes out of the?
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: We've never seen one.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: Well, just watch out.
- 32:01Don Armstrong: We've gone from cars, hot rods, building them.
- 32:04Don Armstrong: We didn't talk about engines, but we have a special section that Jeff has got to deal with with engines.
- 32:09Don Armstrong: And we've gone right straight into the sand, the sand dudes, and the lizard wranglers.
- 32:15Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 32:16Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 32:16Don Armstrong: Rick, it's a pleas, and I'm going to end there.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: In real time lizard wranglers.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: Thank you guys so much.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: It's always a pleasure.
- 32:24Don Armstrong: We blew right through a break, and we overblue it by 15 minutes.
- 32:28Don Armstrong: I just want you to know, because you, sir, have charmed all of us for 30 straight minutes.
- 32:34Mike Marrs: Well, it's a good thing I can't see the clock because I didn't notice.
- 32:37Mike Marrs: Yeah.
- 32:38Don Armstrong: Well Rick, thank you.
- 32:39Don Armstrong: Thank you for inviting us and thank you for a great event.
- 32:42Don Armstrong: We love coming and uh we appreciate you.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: And I hope to do this many, many more times.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: Perfect.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: Us too.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
