- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:45SPEAKER_03: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:49SPEAKER_03: Tristan, we have a new head football coach at Texas Tech.
- 0:53SPEAKER_05: Bro, what's with the low energy?
- 0:54SPEAKER_05: You know, our new guy, Maguire, Joey McGuire, savior of Texas Tech football, will be telling you to get amped up right now and all you sound with your mototone.
- 1:05SPEAKER_05: I need some energy out of you right now, sir.
- 1:08SPEAKER_03: He is here.
- 1:10SPEAKER_03: Joey Maguire is your new Texas Tech football coach.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: I'm extremely excited.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: I've been on Twitter all day.
- 1:18SPEAKER_03: I've gotten no work done because all I'm doing is looking at Joey Maguire tweets from everybody across Red Raider Nation.
- 1:24SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're all hyped up, dude.
- 1:26SPEAKER_03: This is extremely exciting.
- 1:27SPEAKER_03: Uh, he was one of our, you know, I wouldn't say he was one of our top candidates when this whole thing started, but he emerged as one of those as time went on.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: More people said more things.
- 1:40SPEAKER_03: The movement higher Maguire started.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: I mean, I think it's just somebody that, if anything, were uniting around him, and most of the fan base is really excited for him.
- 1:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah, the task number one seems to be accomplished.
- 1:54SPEAKER_05: Unite the fan base.
- 1:55SPEAKER_05: I haven't seen like any negative feedback regarding him.
- 1:59SPEAKER_05: I think the only feed negative feedback we're seeing is who is this guy?
- 2:02SPEAKER_05: Which is understandable.
- 2:03SPEAKER_05: You know, it's not exactly like he's a big time head coach, he's not even a coordinate, like a true coordinator.
- 2:08SPEAKER_05: So there's not a whole lot on him out there on a national standpoint, but he is incredibly respected amongst any Texas circle you could even hear from.
- 2:18SPEAKER_05: So I think the only thing that people are worried about is just the lack of not knowing anything about him.
- 2:22SPEAKER_05: But the good news about that is you get to learn about him and hear how great he is.
- 2:27SPEAKER_05: Because out of everything I've seen, it's been nothing but showering praise of the man.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: I mean, you you look on Twitter and just see how many different current Texas high school coaches are praising Joey Maguire, are praising the higher, all of these even media heads, blue check marks are saying this is a great thing for Texas Tech.
- 2:50SPEAKER_03: He's gonna rebuild that program.
- 2:52SPEAKER_03: He's gonna recruit to West Texas and Lubbock.
- 2:55SPEAKER_03: I think you know, not your casual college football fan, or they're not gonna know who Joey Maguire is unless they are a Baylor fan or currently a Texas Tech fan, to be honest.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: So uh I think this is good.
- 3:07SPEAKER_03: It's a low-key guy that we're getting in here.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: Um, I think he is extremely underrated as a leader, as a coach.
- 3:17SPEAKER_03: And I even think his X's and O's are gonna be underrated here.
- 3:20SPEAKER_03: But I mean, really, when you're talking about the head coach, the main thing you need to have is a leader of man and a recruiter.
- 3:26SPEAKER_03: And that is exactly what Joey McGuire is.
- 3:29SPEAKER_05: I think another thing that's really exciting to see is that this man looks really excited to be to have his opportunity and take this job.
- 3:36SPEAKER_05: I think he's probably had his eyes on this position for a while.
- 3:38SPEAKER_05: I'm sure he's wanted to make his rise to become a head coach at the uh in the Texas college football level.
- 3:45SPEAKER_05: And man, what an awesome first job to take.
- 3:47SPEAKER_05: You're jumping right into the power five discussion.
- 3:50SPEAKER_05: You're going straight into the one of the most prestigious uh Texas teams around.
- 3:55SPEAKER_05: So it's really, really great.
- 3:56SPEAKER_05: He seems really grateful to have the opportunity.
- 3:59SPEAKER_05: He's obviously not wasting any time since we're already getting tweets from recruits about him even offering kids, as well as recruits saying, uh, you know, giving the eyeballs emojis and just being excited about the hire.
- 4:09SPEAKER_05: Because this guy was basically captain recruiter over in Waco, he was pretty much the lead on that, and he got to see how the recruiting class has really improved under under his watch.
- 4:20SPEAKER_05: And so he's he's learned from a couple of great coaches as well.
- 4:23SPEAKER_05: Matt Rule hired him, which turns out to be an amazing hire because he's intricate in why Baylor exploded under Rule and now Rule's in the NFL.
- 4:32SPEAKER_05: Uh, but we all he also succeeded under Dave Aranda, who's also looking to be a great coach.
- 4:36SPEAKER_05: So I'm glad to see we're getting some of that Baylor juice over to Texas Tech because they're doing something right, which is something we haven't been doing for a while.
- 4:42SPEAKER_05: So I'm totally cool with somewhat copying and pasting that formula.
- 4:46SPEAKER_03: No doubt.
- 4:47SPEAKER_03: And I mean, the the thing about it is he was actually up for the Baylor job along with Dave Aranda.
- 4:53SPEAKER_03: So they were thinking about hiring him to be their head coach then.
- 4:57SPEAKER_03: Now, uh, when Dave Aranda was brought on, he was like, This guy Joey Maguire knows what he's doing.
- 5:03SPEAKER_03: I want to retain him on my staff and have him be still a part of this organization because I know how good of a recruiter he is, how uh good of a coach he is, just in general.
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: I mean, a motivator to these kids.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: Every single player that has played for Coach Maguire loves the crap out of him and vouches for him.
- 5:23SPEAKER_03: And you'll see that from his high school players to uh his college players at Baylor.
- 5:28SPEAKER_03: And so I think uh, you know, it's not like he's coming in with no head coaching experience at all.
- 5:33SPEAKER_03: The guy is an unbelievable high school coach for many years at Cedar Hill, uh, managed to get 141 and 42 over there to a program that didn't make the playoffs eight years prior, eight years in a row prior to him getting there.
- 5:49SPEAKER_03: So as soon as Joey McGuire shows up, they turn into a winning program, 12 straight playoff appearances, three state championships, nine by district championships, seven district championships.
- 5:59SPEAKER_03: I mean, the guy knows how to win, and I know it's the high school level, but that's a big deal.
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: Texas high school football is no joke.
- 6:05SPEAKER_03: So you get that guy in here uh to run a collegiate program after being with a Power Five Big 12 program for the last five years.
- 6:14SPEAKER_03: I think it's a match made in head of them.
- 6:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I like that you brought up Baylor's players and his high school players that are bringing him up how much they love him.
- 6:21SPEAKER_05: Because, like you were touching on before, the Baylor players were in the locker room vouching to the AD of Baylor and make telling them to make him the head coach of the football program.
- 6:30SPEAKER_05: Um, because apparently, you know, word say of these articles I'm reading is he was the favorite to be the UTSA head coach as well.
- 6:38SPEAKER_05: Uh, because apparently UTSA approached him about their head coaching job, but he thought that he had a real chance at becoming the Baylor head coach, so he decided to remain with his program that he's already helped build to just see if he could continue that projectory of what Matt Rule did an incredible job.
- 6:53SPEAKER_05: Uh, obviously, it turns out it didn't quite work out that way, but I bet it was a close call.
- 6:58SPEAKER_05: And talk about the immense respect for uh Dave Aranda to keep him around to keep his, I don't know if you want to say maybe perhaps job taker rivalry.
- 7:05SPEAKER_05: I don't know if that's the word to use, but just talk about immense respect and um and the amount of goodwill Dave Aranda has brought up with his departure.
- 7:14SPEAKER_05: And another thing to look at is Baylor fans seem you know, obviously they're they're happy for him, which is a great sign, but also they seem disappointed that he's leaving.
- 7:24SPEAKER_05: Uh, and you it's not that you take, you know, you know, you you you enjoy seeing the misery of other fans, even if it's baylor fans, yada yada yada, uh lol.
- 7:35SPEAKER_05: But um you do like seeing that it they're losing something of value and it's coming to Texas Tech because you whenever we hired Matt Wells, it's not like Utah State was crying, it's not like they were begging we're we're going, we're ruined, this is never gonna work out again.
- 7:50SPEAKER_05: We lost our guy.
- 7:51SPEAKER_05: Um, but that's that's not how work went down with Baylor.
- 7:54SPEAKER_05: So they look like it looks like he's built a community there that loves him.
- 7:57SPEAKER_05: And I'm ready for that in West Texas that we need a guy that is not only able to lead the football program, but lead the Lubbock community as a whole.
- 8:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 8:06SPEAKER_03: That's a good point to bring up because you see any Baylor fan on social media right now, none of them are happy that Joey McGuire is now gone from Baylor.
- 8:15SPEAKER_03: I mean, he was such an integral part to their recruiting scheme.
- 8:19SPEAKER_03: And now, since he's starting immediately here at Texas Tech, he's gonna, I mean, he's going against them now.
- 8:26SPEAKER_03: I mean, he's going from one day, he's recruiting for Baylor, and now today he's offering guys for Texas Tech.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: And I can even see some of these Baylor recruits flipping and going to Texas Tech now because he was their main recruiter, he's the reason they decided to go to Baylor.
- 8:41SPEAKER_03: And now if he's the head coach somewhere else, shoot, you know, come on down to Lubbock, Texas, and start playing for the Red Raiders.
- 8:48SPEAKER_03: I would love that, and everybody here would love that.
- 8:50SPEAKER_03: So I think uh it's awesome that he's starting immediately.
- 8:54SPEAKER_03: That's the good thing about hiring a Joey Maguire versus say a Jeff Trailer.
- 8:59SPEAKER_03: You know, if Jeff if we hired Jeff Trailer, he probably would have coached out the last few games with UTSA.
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: Instead, Joey Maguire can just start right now, start recruiting for next season before signing day.
- 9:10SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's this is big time.
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: And I mean, we'll talk about the financial stuff here in a second, but this is just a good hire in general, just having this guy be the CEO of this new football team uh and the program.
- 9:23SPEAKER_03: And I just think this is a guy that's gonna turn this ship around.
- 9:26SPEAKER_05: I absolutely agree.
- 9:28SPEAKER_05: And I think you know, firing Matt Wells and hiring this guy so fast after is really starting to make sense.
- 9:33SPEAKER_05: I really like that the athletic department went out with a mission, and they it sounds like they accomplished that mission because now we get half a season or or the last third of a season to really start wrapping this thing back together.
- 9:46SPEAKER_05: That way uh McGuire can win over our current players while recruiting out as well.
- 9:51SPEAKER_05: You know, he has tons of time to kind of keep the ship together that's at least in place for him while adding on to it.
- 9:58SPEAKER_05: It's interesting to see, you know, tech stack is a big fish, obviously, in relative to in the whole college landscape.
- 10:04SPEAKER_05: But you know, we're we teams like USC and stuff are still vacant.
- 10:09SPEAKER_05: While we we recently fired our coach and have brought in a guy really quickly, like those there's a still a bunch of vacant programs that have been open longer than us, and here we are filling it.
- 10:19SPEAKER_05: It just I like the speed that this is moving at.
- 10:22SPEAKER_05: It keeps us from getting overly anxious, and I think it keeps us from overthinking it as well.
- 10:26SPEAKER_05: I don't think we're overthinking this.
- 10:28SPEAKER_05: I think we have we were filling fitting the bill that Kirby Hokett wanted.
- 10:31SPEAKER_05: He wanted the Texas recruiter, a Texas tie, a guy that knows how the strange freaking mafia family, like that is Texas high school football, works.
- 10:42SPEAKER_05: And I I get it, it and I think we've accomplished a mission that we set out to do.
- 10:46SPEAKER_03: Well, and Kirby Hokett and the hiring committee did their due diligence here.
- 10:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, they hired they hired, they interviewed, you know, four or five guys for this position.
- 10:56SPEAKER_03: You know, it's not like and and Jeff Trailer was their number one choice, and he decided to stay at UTSA, and that's fine.
- 11:02SPEAKER_03: But you know, you go and interview an Alex Crinch, you go and interview an Anthony Lynn, you go they did their due diligence here to try to get the right guy, and they settled on Joey McGuire.
- 11:13SPEAKER_03: And I'm I'm really happy and I'm gonna trust them with it.
- 11:15SPEAKER_03: Uh, because you know, you'll see from not even just this isn't just Kirby making the decision here.
- 11:21SPEAKER_03: This is a committee.
- 11:22SPEAKER_03: This is the fan base got involved during this hire.
- 11:26SPEAKER_03: Whether you want to believe how much effect that had on it, uh, you know, the higher McGuire movement, I'm sure had something to do with it.
- 11:32SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, shout out to uh to Kyle Jacobson and uh Rob Bro and all those guys that uh really got that going.
- 11:41SPEAKER_05: So um, but yeah, you know the clock, working off the paycheck for Texas Tech.
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: Seriously.
- 11:49SPEAKER_03: Um, but I think I think Uniting the fan base was a massive deal in making this hire.
- 11:54SPEAKER_03: And I, you know, I think this is the best guy to do it right now.
- 11:58SPEAKER_05: I mean, obviously, you're gonna immediately start comparing him to the past hires, but the the excitement around hiring Joey Maguire just feels completely different from Al Wells.
- 12:06SPEAKER_05: Like, even the people that may not quite know know who Joey McGuire is yet, at least they can look into it and say, Okay, we got one of our own in the sense that we hired a Texan, we got a guy who's a Hall of Famer high school coach and who will be able to recruit the circles in Texas that we haven't been doing for well over a decade, at least to a high level.
- 12:25SPEAKER_05: So with Matt Wells, is we're getting a guy out of Utah with no Texas ties and that no one really knows.
- 12:31SPEAKER_05: Like we knew Utah State was having a pretty good season, but it's not like we were paying attention to it.
- 12:36SPEAKER_05: Now it's cool to see we're getting a guy from a rival, so so we understand that he knows what the Big 12 is like and he knows what Texas is like.
- 12:46SPEAKER_05: So I think this is a phenomenal hire.
- 12:48SPEAKER_05: I feel really good about this.
- 12:49SPEAKER_05: I it's in the excitement alone, just it makes you feel so much better about it because it's not just the fans that are excited.
- 12:55SPEAKER_05: I swear every media head loves this, especially the ones that understand Texas Tech and the Big 12 and Texas football.
- 13:00SPEAKER_05: They understand what this how this is going to impact a program that desperately needs a rebuild because it's time to start thinking that way for tech.
- 13:07SPEAKER_05: It's time to understand that we need to build a program up, not do a sort of like a transfer reload, whatever you want to call it.
- 13:14SPEAKER_05: It's time to build this from the ground up and actually turn it into a lasting winner.
- 13:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:19SPEAKER_03: And I mean, another another thing to note with Joey Maguire versus other candidates is he's a little cheaper of an option.
- 13:26SPEAKER_03: You know, he's a guy that uh is probably gonna make around the same that Matt Wells made, about three to four million dollars a year.
- 13:32SPEAKER_03: Those specifics haven't been uh announced yet, but I'm sure it's gonna be in that range.
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: And now, with everything the committee has said, with everything Texas Tech has, uh everything that's been leaked by Don Williams and and by other media heads, um, you know, we have more money to spend this time around on some kick-ass coordinators.
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: And that's what we that's the next step in here.
- 13:56SPEAKER_03: It doesn't just it doesn't just end with Joey McGuire.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: It's who he brings in as his offensive and defensive coordinator, who he retains potentially on this current staff.
- 14:04SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, a guy like Sonny Cumbie, a guy like uh like Derek Jones, you know, uh these type of uh coaches that have been successful at times for Texas Tech in the past few years, even though we haven't really succeeded.
- 14:17SPEAKER_03: Uh, but guys, you know, I I just really think that Joey McGuire as a leader is going to bring Texas Tech to different heights, you know.
- 14:29SPEAKER_03: I didn't think Matt Wells was a bad leader necessarily.
- 14:32SPEAKER_03: I thought the players love to play for him, I thought everything like that.
- 14:36SPEAKER_03: But uh after seeing this guy in some of these speeches uh from the past and his in his uh team's locker rooms, um I mean you want to run through a wall for this guy.
- 14:47SPEAKER_03: And he's just it's a different kind of hype and a different kind of belief in a in a coach to get you this ready to play a game.
- 14:57SPEAKER_03: And I, you know, I just I've watched that video now three, four times that locker room speech and the state championship, whatever it was.
- 15:03SPEAKER_03: And uh, I mean, he's just the type of guy that everybody would love to play for.
- 15:07SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, and you definitely want a players coach, and he really seems like he's that kind of guy.
- 15:13SPEAKER_05: Um, and he's seen the lowest lows of college football.
- 15:16SPEAKER_05: He's seen a one in 11 Baylor team, but he's also seen an 11-win baylor team.
- 15:21SPEAKER_05: He's been a part of that rebuild, he's been a part of that turnaround.
- 15:24SPEAKER_05: Two different rebuilds, yes, and both bounce back incredibly well.
- 15:29SPEAKER_05: Baylor's ranked and they have a great team now.
- 15:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they just lost a TCU, but I would take their season immediately with how well they're doing.
- 15:37SPEAKER_05: I would take Dave Aranda, but now, no, not right now.
- 15:40SPEAKER_05: I want Joey Maguire, obviously, but just the what like I said at the beginning of the pod, I want some of that Baylor blueprint because what they're doing is right.
- 15:49SPEAKER_05: What they've done post-Brials has been amazing, like with with the hand they were dealt.
- 15:54SPEAKER_05: And it's it's time for us to try something different.
- 15:58SPEAKER_05: It's time to stop getting the coach that you know the the the the the the either former head coach of a successful team or up and coming G5 head coach or a a hot new coordinator like like Cliff Kingsbury.
- 16:11SPEAKER_05: It's it's great to see us going for a guy that I think a formula we've never really tried for a high school to college guy, you know.
- 16:19SPEAKER_05: We I don't think we've ever seen that at tech, and probably the guy that people are gonna be caring comparing him to the most is a spike dykes type, like the way he's gonna embrace the community, the way he's just gonna pour himself into that.
- 16:29SPEAKER_05: I just don't think we've seen anything like that in decades, and I think that's gonna be great to see.
- 16:33SPEAKER_05: I think there's a lot to believe in right now.
- 16:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and he's not an unknown to Texas Tech, his daughter went there.
- 16:38SPEAKER_03: I mean, he he visited multiple times.
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: He's he knows Lubbock, he knows the area.
- 16:43SPEAKER_03: Uh, even if he wasn't, you know, ever coached or lived in the area, he knows Texas Tech.
- 16:48SPEAKER_03: Uh, and so that's just another plus.
- 16:50SPEAKER_03: And uh, I mean, honestly, it it it the coordinators are gonna matter a lot for me.
- 16:55SPEAKER_03: I I said that about any hire, you know.
- 16:57SPEAKER_03: If we brought in Anthony Lynn, if we brought in any Graham Harrell, any of these guys, it's gonna be about the coordinators too, because we have that money to spend a little extra on these coordinators and get some really smart football savvy guys in here to run a good scheme and just you know get us going because we haven't had good coordinators the last few years.
- 17:18SPEAKER_03: And uh under Matt Wells, we had bad coordinators under Cliff Kingsbury.
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: We had bad coordinators.
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: So uh we need to get that changed, and I think we should talk about some potential offensive and defensive coordinators here.
- 17:29SPEAKER_03: Nothing has been announced as of right now, uh, this Monday at 5 30 p.m.
- 17:35SPEAKER_03: So by the time you're listening to this, maybe he's already hired somebody, maybe more names are being thrown around, but we're gonna talk about the few that we've heard, uh, whether over social media, whether over some people that we've talked to.
- 17:46SPEAKER_03: So uh let's get that going here.
- 17:47SPEAKER_03: Let's start with the offensive coordinators.
- 17:49SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, I think Sonny Cumby is a realistic guy to bring back.
- 17:53SPEAKER_03: Uh, I I don't think Cumby's done a bad job this year.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: I think he's been dealt a bad hand a lot of the time uh this season, with you know, Tyler Shuck going down, or whether it's Eric Ezukama missing, Dawson Deedon missing.
- 18:06SPEAKER_03: He's he's always been missing somebody.
- 18:08SPEAKER_03: Taj Brooks or Roderick Thompson's been hurt at the beginning of the season.
- 18:11SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, I and it's his first year at Texas Tech.
- 18:15SPEAKER_03: So uh I think overall he's he's shown a lot of upside, and we'll see these next three games how he handles the team.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: But I think Sonny Cumbi's a realistic choice here for offensive coordinator.
- 18:26SPEAKER_05: I agree, and out of the two coordinators, he's the one I'd want to keep.
- 18:30SPEAKER_05: So yes, and we're talking about a golden child of Texas Tech.
- 18:33SPEAKER_05: He played here, he knows West Texas, he understands how he probably understands the intricates, intricacies that is West Texas in Lubbock and knows how to get kids to go go play there.
- 18:43SPEAKER_05: So I'm sure he'll a big part of you know bringing Chuck in and such.
- 18:46SPEAKER_05: So I definitely want a quarterback-minded guy like him who's been in their shoes at Texas Tech.
- 18:51SPEAKER_05: I would not be opposed with keeping him.
- 18:52SPEAKER_05: I don't think the offense has been the problem.
- 18:55SPEAKER_05: It hasn't, because I think the only time where you've you've kind of pulled your hair out with the offense is in a K-State game, second half, but that was just an implosion on all sides.
- 19:03SPEAKER_05: And like you said, it's his first, it's his first year here, and I think we owe it to him to absolutely give him the interview because I thought we were gonna interview him for the head coaching job, but apparently we're way ahead of that already.
- 19:14SPEAKER_05: Uh, so I think I think looking at it for the uh offensive coordinator position would be excellent as well.
- 19:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's it and like I said, it's definitely gonna depend on how these next three games go for tech, uh, how we look under a potentially a new quarterback in Donovan Smith if he's gonna play.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, I think I think I'm just curious to see how Sonny Cumby runs the table these last three games, potentially to make a bowl game.
- 19:35SPEAKER_03: I mean, these are three tough opponents we have left in Iowa State, Oklahoma State, and Baylor.
- 19:39SPEAKER_03: So if we can pull out a win here, I mean, hey, go ahead, go ahead and try to bring Sonny Cumby back uh to be the OC.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: Um, couple other names that we need to uh that we've heard, whether it's over social media or whatever.
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: Uh Garrett Riley was an interesting one, the current offensive coordinator at SMU, Lincoln Riley's brother.
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: Um, I thought that was an interesting candidate.
- 20:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 20:01SPEAKER_05: And SMU's uh offense has been on fire, and the his head coach is a guy that we thought about hiring.
- 20:06SPEAKER_05: I'm sure uh Sonny Dykes might be you know punching himself in the face for waiting too long to hop on the tech offer uh if we gave it to him.
- 20:14SPEAKER_05: So it's it's definitely a program that we've been looking at, and they've been on fire.
- 20:19SPEAKER_05: You know, they've had a great year, even though they you know perhaps it's coming apart a little bit, they've only lost two games, but they're they're having a great year.
- 20:26SPEAKER_05: And then offense is the main part about that.
- 20:28SPEAKER_05: They've been on high flying, classically air raid, uh at least air raid-based uh system.
- 20:34SPEAKER_05: So we know that well here in West Texas, it's it's it's succeeded here.
- 20:38SPEAKER_05: So I'm sure he will get a look.
- 20:40SPEAKER_05: And because it's definitely uh an upgrade, you know, you're heading to that power five level, and you probably get a pay bump as well.
- 20:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 20:47SPEAKER_03: An up and comer guy, uh younger uh in the grand scheme.
- 20:50SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, uh another guy who is a young coordinator that um maybe isn't uh he's been talked about a little bit.
- 20:59SPEAKER_03: He was actually talked about when we were on the OC search this past offseason, uh, before we hired Sonny Cumbie, and that was Zach Kitley.
- 21:07SPEAKER_03: Uh, he is the son of our current track coach, Wes Kitley.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: Uh, he I believe is at Western Kentucky right now.
- 21:16SPEAKER_03: He was at Houston Baptist last year, and I know bringing up Houston Baptist last year, not uh not my favorite thing to do because they played us so tight, but he was a part of that.
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: He was a part of the reason.
- 21:26SPEAKER_03: Him and Bailey Zappy had a great thing going on at Houston Baptist and currently have a pretty solid thing going on at Western Kentucky.
- 21:32SPEAKER_03: They could score some points, man.
- 21:34SPEAKER_03: I mean, this guy knows how to get some points on the board, and I think that'll translate to, I mean, it's translated already from uh from FCS to uh G five.
- 21:45SPEAKER_03: And now I think you know, just one more step up for him.
- 21:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's a great one to put out there too, because I believe he was an assistant under Clip Kingsbury, an offensive assistant.
- 21:54SPEAKER_05: So he he understands tech to stick as well.
- 21:56SPEAKER_05: Um, and we will take all we can of that.
- 21:59SPEAKER_05: We need Need that culture.
- 22:00SPEAKER_05: We need people that understand Texas Tech because it is a unique job.
- 22:04SPEAKER_05: I'm not going to sit here and say it's a hard, you know, like, oh, it's such a hard job in Lubbock, blah blah blah.
- 22:09SPEAKER_05: But it it is a unique job compared to others.
- 22:11SPEAKER_05: So I definitely want that sort of mindset here.
- 22:14SPEAKER_05: And he's been successful everywhere he's gone.
- 22:16SPEAKER_05: He's and he's such a young guy for it, too.
- 22:18SPEAKER_05: He's flying up the ranks at it for his age.
- 22:20SPEAKER_05: It just shows his sharp mind.
- 22:22SPEAKER_05: And he did learn under one of the best.
- 22:24SPEAKER_05: Cliff Kingsbury is a genius when it comes to the offensive side of the ball.
- 22:27SPEAKER_05: That was never the problem.
- 22:28SPEAKER_05: So I'll take some of that cliff cliffness back for sure.
- 22:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 22:33SPEAKER_03: So he would uh he'd be a little bit of a risk in my eyes because he is so young.
- 22:37SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, but he is a hot name out there.
- 22:39SPEAKER_03: Um, and another guy that I think a lot of people are are talking about, uh, he was potentially up for our head coaching position was Graham Harrell, uh, you know, former Texas tech quarterback, one of the best ones that we had in our history election, of course.
- 22:53SPEAKER_03: Uh, but uh he currently at USC, probably not gonna stay uh on USC staff after they actually get a coach in there because they're currently uh coachless at the moment.
- 23:04SPEAKER_03: So um I I don't know.
- 23:06SPEAKER_03: I don't know if that's gonna happen.
- 23:08SPEAKER_03: There's a lot of rumors flying around that he doesn't have a ton of interest in the job.
- 23:12SPEAKER_03: Uh whether it's whether it's him not having interest in it or whether it's just not right the right fit at the moment, whether we're even looking at him for OC, whether he's even looking for OC jobs, he could be looking for head coaching jobs, who really knows.
- 23:24SPEAKER_03: But I I don't think uh Graham Harrell is gonna be a guy that's gonna be an option here.
- 23:30SPEAKER_03: Um, I could be wrong there, but it doesn't seem like his name's flowing around a lot.
- 23:34SPEAKER_05: I could be mistaken, but I think he was like the last guy the committee interviewed for the head coaching job at Texas Tech.
- 23:42SPEAKER_05: I mean, do you come back at him for maybe you want to be an offensive coordinator instead?
- 23:46SPEAKER_05: You know, um because I think he's also getting uh looks from I've seen like Washington State, which might be a good fit for him right now.
- 23:53SPEAKER_05: And I think the good thing about Graham Harrell is yeah, he's probably not coming to Texas Tech right now, but he's a really young man for the industry.
- 24:01SPEAKER_05: If he can go develop, maybe even take a head coaching job somewhere and prove that he's a great coach, give me something you a guy you look at along the lines, like to come back, you know, 10 20 years later.
- 24:12SPEAKER_05: So it's just it may not happen right now, but he's always going to be connected to the job.
- 24:17SPEAKER_05: So wish him nothing but the best.
- 24:19SPEAKER_05: I understand why he wouldn't want to just come back for an OC job because he might think he's looking for a more so promotion than that.
- 24:25SPEAKER_05: Um, but hey, I'd love it.
- 24:27SPEAKER_05: But I don't know if he's necessarily better than Cumby, you know.
- 24:30SPEAKER_05: That's that's my thing.
- 24:31SPEAKER_03: He may be looking for G5 coaching jobs, head coach.
- 24:33SPEAKER_03: That's what I mean.
- 24:34SPEAKER_03: So, you know, who knows what uh what he's being looked at, who he's talking to, but he has been in the Pac 12 for a while, so I can absolutely understand him potentially going over to Wazoo uh over there in Pullman.
- 24:46SPEAKER_03: So we'll see.
- 24:47SPEAKER_03: I I don't think I wouldn't expect uh Graham Harrell to come over though.
- 24:51SPEAKER_05: Like, like I said, I think he's better looked at as a prospect.
- 24:54SPEAKER_05: He's a young man, and we can definitely think we can look at him 10-20 years in the future because Joey McGuire isn't that young, he's gonna retire eventually or move on or whatever.
- 25:01SPEAKER_05: So it or any or he may not work out, you know.
- 25:03SPEAKER_05: It's a sad fact, but it just you know, maybe maybe not right now, is all I'm saying.
- 25:07SPEAKER_03: Maybe, yeah, for sure.
- 25:08SPEAKER_03: So um let's talk defensive guys.
- 25:11SPEAKER_03: I think that's all I had for OCs.
- 25:12SPEAKER_03: I don't know if you had any other uh guys you wanted to bring up for offensive coordinator.
- 25:16SPEAKER_05: No, but I mean that's definitely the uh the sexier one to talk about.
- 25:20SPEAKER_05: That's what we're known for.
- 25:21SPEAKER_05: Um, so but I think those are good names to start with.
- 25:23SPEAKER_05: Uh, but but who knows?
- 25:24SPEAKER_05: I mean, sure, maybe Joey McGuire has a guy in mind, and we definitely want the guy that he wants and he that we he knows will succeed at the end of the day.
- 25:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 25:32SPEAKER_03: These guys know a whole lot more than what we do, so we're gonna support the next we're gonna support the next OC, whoever he is.
- 25:38SPEAKER_03: But uh let's talk defensive coordinators because we thought we had a good one, and turns out he's not.
- 25:45SPEAKER_03: Turns out uh Keith Patterson has been extremely disappointing this season.
- 25:50SPEAKER_03: I would be very, very, very, very surprised if he comes back and stays on staff.
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: Uh, I think he's going somewhere else after this year.
- 25:59SPEAKER_03: Um, and I've only seen one defensive coordinator brought up in rumors, and it's uh current Carolina Panthers linebacker coach, Mike uh Serravo, I believe is how you say it.
- 26:10SPEAKER_03: Uh, he was the linebacker coach at Baylor from 2017 to 2019, obviously working under Matt Rule now with the Panthers.
- 26:17SPEAKER_03: Um, he's a guy that's been brought up, uh, a guy that apparently is still very close with Joey McGuire and could be looking to take that next leap and be a coordinator.
- 26:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I love that.
- 26:28SPEAKER_05: I love that idea.
- 26:29SPEAKER_05: I think have bringing a defensive guy more so than an offensive guy from the NFL is awesome because I think it'd be so great to have a sharp mind that's done it at the highest level come here and come back to the state where he was and recruited and coached.
- 26:43SPEAKER_05: I think it's a match made in heaven.
- 26:44SPEAKER_05: I think that'd be such a fun hire to have former Carolina Panthers coach come be our defensive coordinator.
- 26:52SPEAKER_05: I think that just sounds cool to recruits as well because it even sounds cool to us.
- 26:55SPEAKER_05: So I think that's a fun idea.
- 26:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well, and Carolina Panthers have a great defense.
- 27:02SPEAKER_03: That's the only reason.
- 27:03SPEAKER_03: That's the only reason they've won these games because you know it's not freaking Sam Darnold winning them these games.
- 27:08SPEAKER_03: So, but um, yeah, I mean, I don't know too much about him other than that he's currently in the in uh in the NFL and they have a solid defense over there, solid linebackers.
- 27:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, they had solid linebackers while he was at Baylor.
- 27:21SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, I I I would be hyped about it.
- 27:24SPEAKER_03: I don't I again don't know much about him.
- 27:26SPEAKER_03: I can't really say what kind of defense he runs or anything like that, but uh you know, this is kind of a wait and see.
- 27:32SPEAKER_03: But I am man, I just hope for something different.
- 27:35SPEAKER_03: That's all I want.
- 27:36SPEAKER_03: I don't want this current state of defense at Texas Tech.
- 27:39SPEAKER_05: I really don't think RD's Patterson's coming back another year.
- 27:42SPEAKER_05: I think that's not even in the in question.
- 27:45SPEAKER_05: Uh, so so do not worry, tech fans.
- 27:47SPEAKER_05: Um, but you were right, man.
- 27:49SPEAKER_05: I think you you you kind of made previewed this perfectly.
- 27:51SPEAKER_05: I think now that we've united around him, his next job tomorrow is selling us, you know, with himself personally at his press conference.
- 27:59SPEAKER_05: I think that'll be a press conference you don't want to miss.
- 28:03SPEAKER_05: I think it'll be like a coach Adams, maybe not quite as emotional, but definitely like just the immense hype around and energy in that building is going to be awesome.
- 28:11SPEAKER_05: Go if you can.
- 28:13SPEAKER_05: Um, but after that, I think the coordinators is obviously the big one because I think we've seen our tech coaches fail time and time again.
- 28:22SPEAKER_05: I think it's especially prevalent in the Kingsbury era, is that our coordinators just really let the team down, let the fans down.
- 28:30SPEAKER_05: And some of that's a part of the athletic department.
- 28:32SPEAKER_05: Um, because we haven't exactly thrown the cash that's required to win at this level, to at least bring in the talent that's required to win at this level.
- 28:40SPEAKER_05: So I'm really glad to see us establish ourselves financially as a as someone that can support a staff that can compete in the new Big 12.
- 28:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 28:49SPEAKER_03: So that and it's a huge part of the it's a huge part of the job is is hiring, you know, your coordinators.
- 28:55SPEAKER_03: So this is on Joey McGuire, too.
- 28:56SPEAKER_03: We'll see how uh how who he thinks is the right guy for the job.
- 29:00SPEAKER_03: You know, that was one thing about Mike Leach was he was so good about just bringing in the right guys.
- 29:05SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know, Mike Leach is obviously a tremendous football mind, but uh, you know, he had multiple on multiple head current head coaches that were on that Texas Tech staff while he was there.
- 29:16SPEAKER_03: So, you know, that's half the job in of itself.
- 29:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that he has probably the most influential college tree in the in the country.
- 29:23SPEAKER_05: So it's the he's he has connections pretty much everywhere on pretty much every offense.
- 29:27SPEAKER_05: It's it's truly incredible that that Mike Leach's Texas Tech staff has had such a profound impact on the game.
- 29:34SPEAKER_05: And hell, I would like the new McGuire tree to be the most profound impact of the game this time around, two decades later, you know.
- 29:43SPEAKER_05: Um, but dude, just such an exciting time because I really do think we got a great guy that to believe in, because that's just half the battle is getting the the fans to support you.
- 29:52SPEAKER_05: And I can't wait to see him get everybody into the Jones because whoever he's gonna say pack the Jones, I'm really gonna believe him because he's gonna be like screaming in a video saying, Let's go, Red Raider, pack the Jones, let's go.
- 30:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because let's go are probably his two favorite words I've seen on the videos.
- 30:08SPEAKER_05: So I'm just I am so ready to buy into him.
- 30:11SPEAKER_05: I already am, and I'm just I'm so ready to love the man as well.
- 30:15SPEAKER_05: He seems everyone says he's just a very high moral character, and he hasn't crossed a single person that doesn't like him.
- 30:21SPEAKER_05: So I'm really excited about it.
- 30:23SPEAKER_03: I'm really excited for our just string of coaches that we have at Texas Tech currently.
- 30:29SPEAKER_03: You talk yeah, Tim Tadlock, you talk Mark Adams, you talk uh Joey McGuire, and even beyond that, Wes Kitley, you know, Tony Greystone, uh just a ton of genuinely good people coaching these programs at Texas Tech.
- 30:45SPEAKER_03: Uh, whether they work out or not on the field, you know, we'll have to see on a few of these.
- 30:50SPEAKER_03: But you know, it's just good to get good people in here to run clean programs and to hopefully get some wins the right way because we've seen uh not at Texas Tech necessarily, but we've seen programs that build it up the wrong way and get in a lot of trouble for it.
- 31:03SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, I don't think that's gonna happen at all under a Joey McGuire-led football program.
- 31:09SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, he's got a new 40 to 50 million dollar facility coming for him, he's got a recruiting ties out the wazoo.
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: I mean, he's he's got a lot of good going for him and a lot to believe in here.
- 31:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Dusty Wobble isn't building that for a five and four season, I'll tell you that.
- 31:26SPEAKER_05: So it's it's and I'm sure Joey McGuire understands that, and I'm sure Womble was one of his biggest cheerleaders to hire him.
- 31:32SPEAKER_05: So I'm ready for that relationship.
- 31:34SPEAKER_05: And you I like that you touched on how we have a basket full of people that are easy to cheer for because at the end of the day, I really want someone to believe in that's wearing the double T.
- 31:42SPEAKER_05: It means so much more than W's and L's because it it it just it's not worth selling the soul of your favorite place on the planet.
- 31:49SPEAKER_05: So I I love this man, I'm so excited.
- 31:52SPEAKER_03: There's too much sketchy shit going on in college sports.
- 31:55SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 31:56SPEAKER_03: You know, we need to take it back down and be a little more genuine, be a little more uh running it the right way, and that's West Texas, man.
- 32:04SPEAKER_05: There we're genuine people.
- 32:05SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm not I know we're not we're not true West Texans, but I think I think we can we can you know call pretend to be the part whenever we're at Texas Tech.
- 32:13SPEAKER_05: So it's it's I I love it and I'm ready to see that culture imminent imanate in all of our programs.
- 32:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 32:20SPEAKER_03: So uh Joey McGuire, man, new head football coach.
- 32:23SPEAKER_03: Let's get ready for it.
- 32:24SPEAKER_03: But um, okay, so we're moving on to the part of the podcast uh that we didn't really expect.
- 32:33SPEAKER_03: Um, I put out a poll uh from the pods account basically saying what should we, hey, you know, what should we talk about tonight?
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: You know, and kind of in a joking way, obviously.
- 32:42SPEAKER_03: We're obviously going to talk about our new head football coach, but I put some options on there.
- 32:46SPEAKER_03: And uh to my surprise, uh, these options were actually chosen a little bit.
- 32:52SPEAKER_03: So uh we've decided to touch on a few of these stupid topics, uh, talk about some uh some random things here, uh, because you know they matter almost as much as Texas Tech football, you know, right?
- 33:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:08SPEAKER_05: This was if we're this was actually kind of an emergency reaction episode.
- 33:13SPEAKER_05: Steven and I weren't planning on recording until Wednesday.
- 33:16SPEAKER_05: And so I I guess Steven thought we had to fill it in with some very important discussions, too, before we got to Wednesday.
- 33:24SPEAKER_03: We have three very important topics to discuss here.
- 33:27SPEAKER_03: Very important, okay.
- 33:28SPEAKER_03: Number one, really important.
- 33:30SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're gonna talk about our favorite volcanoes, uh, we're gonna talk about uh collectible bracelets, and we're gonna finally touch on our top three favorite flightless birds.
- 33:42SPEAKER_03: Um I'm sorry, if you're not following us on Twitter, you have no idea what we're talking about right now.
- 33:51SPEAKER_03: So I I hope you do.
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: Uh, but okay, let's let's get this started here.
- 33:56SPEAKER_03: Uh genuinely your favorite volcano.
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: What is it?
- 33:59SPEAKER_05: My my favorite volcano, it's out of immense respect for the volcano that I had to give this nod to this all-American icon.
- 34:07SPEAKER_05: It's okay.
- 34:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it is the Yellowstone Super Volcano because just hats off to a hole in the ground that could it that could change the earth as we know it if it decided to pop off one day.
- 34:21SPEAKER_05: So just a little bit of a tip of the brim to our imminent doom that could pop off at any time.
- 34:27SPEAKER_05: That is the Yellowstone National Park.
- 34:29SPEAKER_05: Pretty much the entire park is inside of a crater.
- 34:32SPEAKER_05: If you don't believe me, Google it, it's gonna ruin your month.
- 34:35SPEAKER_03: But it's but then you'll be like, I respect, I respect it.
- 34:40SPEAKER_03: It's gonna scare the absolute hell out of you.
- 34:43SPEAKER_05: Uh it's overdue for the eruption, if that makes you feel better.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: Uh-oh, not good.
- 34:49SPEAKER_03: We we no, not good at all.
- 34:52SPEAKER_03: Uh very topical with that one, as uh, you know, Yellowstone just came out with their four amazing show.
- 34:59SPEAKER_03: So very topical.
- 35:00SPEAKER_03: Love that you kept it American.
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: Um, I did not.
- 35:04SPEAKER_03: Uh basically, my favorite volcano after extensive research that I did.
- 35:09SPEAKER_03: Uh I mean, I've been working on this for years, decades even.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: Um, been thinking about my favorite volcano.
- 35:16SPEAKER_03: I'm like, you know, Mount St.
- 35:18SPEAKER_03: Helens, no, not gonna do that.
- 35:20SPEAKER_03: You know, I'm not gonna do these well-known ones.
- 35:22SPEAKER_03: I I I'm I'm rambling because I don't know another one off the top of my head.
- 35:27SPEAKER_03: Um Mount Kilimanjaro.
- 35:29SPEAKER_03: Oh, there you go.
- 35:30SPEAKER_03: Kilimanjaro, that's a good one, you know.
- 35:32SPEAKER_03: But I'm not gonna do that.
- 35:33SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna be different here.
- 35:34SPEAKER_03: Uh, Mount Marapi here in Indonesia.
- 35:38SPEAKER_05: Uh just because here in Indonesia, here where we presently are in Indonesia.
- 35:44SPEAKER_03: Of course, we're well, uh, what was it?
- 35:46SPEAKER_03: We're not in we're uh uh the Philippines, we're like a top 50 sports podcast in the Philippines that one week.
- 35:52SPEAKER_03: You remember that?
- 35:53SPEAKER_03: We love our Philippines on we do at Talking Tag.
- 35:57SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, and then the and the Philippines loves us, so but no, talking about Indonesia, uh, I just feel like that's like the volcano capital of the world.
- 36:05SPEAKER_03: When I feel like there's gonna be like a bunch of volcanoes, I feel like it's gonna be in Indonesia.
- 36:10SPEAKER_05: Uh this one is that is that a hot take, or is Polynesia, you know, like the the Pacific Rim?
- 36:16SPEAKER_05: Is that not uh the volcane?
- 36:18SPEAKER_05: I guess that they kind of fall into that zone.
- 36:20SPEAKER_03: I guess that's fair.
- 36:21SPEAKER_03: I don't know enough about this, to be honest.
- 36:23SPEAKER_03: I I could you could have said Hawaii, you could have said you're just making hot takes then.
- 36:26SPEAKER_05: I just we're talking about a topic we're supposed to know.
- 36:29SPEAKER_05: Now our pleasure listeners are saying, wow, they know less about volcanoes than they do tech sports, and that's not a whole lot.
- 36:35SPEAKER_05: That's not okay.
- 36:36SPEAKER_03: That's not okay.
- 36:37SPEAKER_03: So we we apologize for that.
- 36:39SPEAKER_03: But no, back to this.
- 36:40SPEAKER_03: I uh I feel like it's the volcano capital of the world.
- 36:42SPEAKER_03: Uh, basically, what I read online is Mount Morape could blow at any minute.
- 36:47SPEAKER_03: I mean, constant ash is coming out of this thing.
- 36:51SPEAKER_03: So I feel like it's just waiting to ruin the island of Java that is located on uh with raining magma all over it.
- 37:00SPEAKER_03: So, you know, I I just feel like the next volcano that erupts is gonna be my favorite.
- 37:04SPEAKER_03: And I think Mount Morapi is a good bet.
- 37:07SPEAKER_03: If you're a betting person, I I think you know you should lay lay down some money on Mount Morapi.
- 37:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you think there's a line on Mount Ur Morapi?
- 37:14SPEAKER_05: I think so.
- 37:15SPEAKER_03: It's weird prop bet, but I don't know.
- 37:17SPEAKER_03: So over under eruption date.
- 37:20SPEAKER_05: So you went with the active, I went with the doorman.
- 37:23SPEAKER_05: I I I even though, like I said, it's it's overdue for an eruption, and you know, Mount Umarapi looks like a little pimple compared to my my big ass American-made Yellowstone volcano.
- 37:34SPEAKER_03: So it's true, but there ain't nothing coming out of Yellowstone.
- 37:37SPEAKER_03: Okay, so we could see some major destruction coming out of Moravi, but let's move on because we hey hey hey hey, can I just one more mention?
- 37:44SPEAKER_03: Go ahead, go ahead.
- 37:45SPEAKER_05: I'm going off planet for this one.
- 37:47SPEAKER_05: I'm going to Mars for the largest volcano in the solar system, and then that is Olympus Mons, which is much taller than Mount uh Mount Rush, not Mount Rushmore, Mount Everest, yeah.
- 38:01SPEAKER_05: You know, Mount Rushmore, Mount Rush, Mount America in the world.
- 38:06SPEAKER_05: Um, but um, yeah, it's much taller than Mount Everest, and Olympus Mons doesn't mess around, so but there's not a whole lot there to be like, damn, that's a big volcano, since you know there's literally nothing in Mars.
- 38:17SPEAKER_03: So well, when we have civilizations on Mars here in like a thousand years or 50 years, if you're if you're Elon Musk, I'm gonna take the under on that one.
- 38:27SPEAKER_03: Okay, sure, sure.
- 38:29SPEAKER_03: Uh I'm sure we're gonna stay far away from Olympus Mons when we do have those civilizations on Mars.
- 38:35SPEAKER_03: Let's move on.
- 38:36SPEAKER_03: This has gone far too long.
- 38:37SPEAKER_03: Um we're moving on to collectible bracelets.
- 38:41SPEAKER_03: This one won, uh, besides the Joey Maguire pick.
- 38:44SPEAKER_03: This was the one that y'all wanted to hear about most for some reason.
- 38:48SPEAKER_03: Uh, really came out of nowhere.
- 38:49SPEAKER_03: The collectible bracelet community showed up uh in ways that I did not expect.
- 38:55SPEAKER_03: I don't even know how to go with this.
- 38:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I was really cheering for Flightless Birds because I really thought that could be the truest conversation.
- 39:02SPEAKER_05: That's a very serious topic, very topical.
- 39:04SPEAKER_05: I'm just surprised we went straight to collective bracelets.
- 39:07SPEAKER_05: It just I maybe that's because it's tangible, people can get their hands on these collective bracelets we're talking about.
- 39:13SPEAKER_05: Maybe that's the draw.
- 39:14SPEAKER_05: But you know, I I like the excitement of being the unknown.
- 39:17SPEAKER_05: What so you want to kick this off?
- 39:19SPEAKER_05: What's your collectible bracelets?
- 39:21SPEAKER_03: Oh, so I I I did some research on uh on collectible bracelets.
- 39:27SPEAKER_03: Um, and the one that came off the top of my head first was we had these things back in middle school um called silly bands.
- 39:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, we had these things called silly bands, and they were animal shapes, uh anything shaped.
- 39:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, okay.
- 39:43SPEAKER_03: So they had, I guess they had a bunch of different ones, but I remember the animal-shaped ones specifically, and basically they were just like uh I it was like drug deals in middle school with these silly bands, and bro, give me your hippo and I'll give you my giraffe.
- 39:57SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, it just lit the world on fire in seventh grade.
- 40:02SPEAKER_03: Uh, but yeah, silly bands is what I wanted to bring up for this this topic.
- 40:07SPEAKER_05: Sheesh, I remember everyone's and you were like a real G if your forearm was like covered.
- 40:13SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, like three inches of tiny silly bands, which amounted to like a hundred.
- 40:19SPEAKER_05: So that was that you were you were you were rolling in it.
- 40:22SPEAKER_05: You might as well be king of the school.
- 40:24SPEAKER_05: That's a great one.
- 40:25SPEAKER_05: I definitely remember mine.
- 40:26SPEAKER_05: Uh, but I'm I'm gonna start with my honorable mention because I think this is one that everyone can relate to is best collectible collectible bracelets, the ones you get when you show your ID at bars, and you end up at the end of the night with like five of those paper bracelets around your wrist because you did a bunch of bar crawling.
- 40:46SPEAKER_03: Big moves.
- 40:47SPEAKER_03: That's that's a good one.
- 40:48SPEAKER_03: Uh, always waking up, uh, hung over with several of those on.
- 40:53SPEAKER_03: And really, if it depended on the amount of hungover you were, is when you took them off the next day.
- 41:00SPEAKER_03: Like, if I was just down for the count after a night of drinking, I would leave them on pretty much the whole next day until I took a shower or something, and then they'd come off then.
- 41:09SPEAKER_05: Bingo, yeah, that's what I'm saying.
- 41:11SPEAKER_05: It's always really fun in the morning, especially whenever you got like six or seven on there.
- 41:15SPEAKER_05: You're wondering, where did we go?
- 41:17SPEAKER_05: How do I have all these?
- 41:18SPEAKER_05: It's nice seeing the difference.
- 41:19SPEAKER_05: Like, oh wow, like this one.
- 41:21SPEAKER_05: I this one even has a pattern on it, you know.
- 41:22SPEAKER_05: But this one even has the bar name on it.
- 41:24SPEAKER_05: All right, but for real, if we're getting serious, man, my collectible bracelet is Ben 10 omnitrixes.
- 41:31SPEAKER_05: Oh my god, who are the generations?
- 41:34SPEAKER_05: All right, which which omnitrix do you have, man?
- 41:38SPEAKER_05: Do you have the the the muscle man?
- 41:40SPEAKER_05: Do you have the the ball guy?
- 41:42SPEAKER_05: Do you have the ghost man?
- 41:44SPEAKER_05: All right, that's that's that's what I'm going with here.
- 41:47SPEAKER_05: Is the is the omnitrix watch, bro?
- 41:49SPEAKER_05: From Ben 10.
- 41:51SPEAKER_03: I didn't watch Ben 10.
- 41:52SPEAKER_03: I didn't what I didn't watch.
- 41:53SPEAKER_04: What what what what are you doing?
- 41:56SPEAKER_04: It was like Teen Titans.
- 41:57SPEAKER_04: I was like Teen Titans, it wasn't as cool as Teen Titans.
- 42:01SPEAKER_04: It was like Teen Titans after Teen Titans, bro.
- 42:04SPEAKER_04: No, it's Ben 10 such crap right now.
- 42:08SPEAKER_03: Also, there's like nine different Ben 10 shows, they redid it.
- 42:12SPEAKER_03: That's why you have so many Omni tricks to choose from.
- 42:15SPEAKER_03: Okay, that's fair.
- 42:16SPEAKER_03: I I don't know enough about this to know.
- 42:20SPEAKER_05: Uh Ben 10.
- 42:22SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 42:23SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 42:24SPEAKER_03: My lack of Ben 10.
- 42:25SPEAKER_03: So, but I did like your I did like the bar one.
- 42:28SPEAKER_03: I related very much to those.
- 42:29SPEAKER_05: We can let that one be the winner then.
- 42:31SPEAKER_05: I if Ben 10's a little targeted towards a certain group of people, it may be, but uh, I I had one more, just gonna bring it up real quick.
- 42:40SPEAKER_03: Uh, after much extensive research, I saw uh these things called lucky fortune blind collectible bracelets.
- 42:47SPEAKER_03: Kind of cool 100 bracelets that you can find and collect.
- 42:50SPEAKER_03: Holy cow find them on Amazon.
- 42:52SPEAKER_03: Uh, they come in little fortune cookies, and you break them open and boom, you got a bracelet.
- 42:58SPEAKER_03: So there you go.
- 42:59SPEAKER_03: Collectible bracelets, look it up on Amazon.
- 43:02SPEAKER_03: Uh, that was gambling for children for fortune.
- 43:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, gambling for children.
- 43:05SPEAKER_03: But let's move on to the one that the topic that we really wanted to talk about.
- 43:09SPEAKER_03: Uh, flightless bird species.
- 43:12SPEAKER_03: You know, we feel very passionate, passionately about these.
- 43:15SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, it's a big part of our lives.
- 43:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, I think Tristan, you did your thesis on flightless birds.
- 43:21SPEAKER_03: I could be wrong.
- 43:22SPEAKER_03: Maybe you didn't do a thesis at all.
- 43:24SPEAKER_03: Uh but no, I didn't.
- 43:27SPEAKER_03: Um, we we're doing our top three here.
- 43:30SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're not gonna go into every flightless bird, even though we probably could we could make a whole episode about that.
- 43:36SPEAKER_03: We're probably shouldn't have it in any episode.
- 43:38SPEAKER_03: Talking flightless birds, talking flightless birds.
- 43:41SPEAKER_03: But no, we we each have our three top flightless birds.
- 43:44SPEAKER_03: Tristan, what's number three?
- 43:46SPEAKER_05: All right, so number three, see with with my list, you're gonna pick up on a pattern on how unreasonable birds these are.
- 43:52SPEAKER_05: It's like how why these birds exist, who knows?
- 43:55SPEAKER_05: They're they're they're a F you to nature, and that's what I appreciate about them.
- 44:00SPEAKER_05: So this one is one of the biggest F use to nature, and that is the Kiwi.
- 44:04SPEAKER_05: The Kiwi doesn't resemble birds in practically any way, but it has like these spine feathers that look way more like fur.
- 44:12SPEAKER_05: It has tiny, tiny little wings that are absolutely useless at this point.
- 44:17SPEAKER_05: And it it just is this little ball that looks like a kiwi fruit.
- 44:21SPEAKER_05: And they just it just seems like an abomination to nature that this bird exists.
- 44:27SPEAKER_05: So hats off to you know laughing Mother Nature in the face in existing.
- 44:33SPEAKER_05: Just congrats.
- 44:34SPEAKER_05: You've done it, you've done it, man.
- 44:36SPEAKER_03: Congratulations to the Kiwi bird for just uh just being useless, just being an absolutely useless species of bird.
- 44:45SPEAKER_03: Um, all right, I'm gonna give you my number three.
- 44:47SPEAKER_03: It's the uh southern cassawary.
- 44:50SPEAKER_03: So good cassawaris, if you don't know, are terrifying to look at.
- 44:55SPEAKER_03: They are scary, they will scare the hell out of you.
- 44:58SPEAKER_03: Just look quite ugly.
- 44:59SPEAKER_03: Quite ugly.
- 45:00SPEAKER_03: Look at the cassawary and tell me that that thing doesn't scare you to death and give you nightmares.
- 45:04SPEAKER_03: Uh, contrary to popular belief, the northern cassawary is not as cool because it has a slightly shorter bill uh than the southern school.
- 45:15SPEAKER_03: That isn't as cool, right?
- 45:16SPEAKER_03: And then there's also a dwarf cassawary, and who wants the dwarf version of it?
- 45:20SPEAKER_03: You know, to be honest.
- 45:21SPEAKER_03: So the southern castawary is my choice, they're terrifying to look at.
- 45:25SPEAKER_03: That's my number three.
- 45:26SPEAKER_05: They're actually dangerous, too.
- 45:27SPEAKER_05: You need to keep your distance from them.
- 45:29SPEAKER_05: They will attempt, they will attack mess around.
- 45:31SPEAKER_05: They're not playing around.
- 45:32SPEAKER_05: That's they you you if you're walking up, you better square up when you come across this castaware because shit will go down.
- 45:39SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, absolutely 100%.
- 45:41SPEAKER_03: What's your number two?
- 45:42SPEAKER_05: The next this next one is yet another abomination to nature, and it's it's a it's and it's a question mark to God.
- 45:50SPEAKER_03: There, there seems to be a theme with your choices.
- 45:53SPEAKER_05: It is the Galapagos penguin, it is the northernmost penguin species on the planet.
- 46:00SPEAKER_05: It is the only species of penguin that is above the that is in the northern hemisphere, which means it's the only penguin that's above the equator.
- 46:08SPEAKER_05: This ping this penguin shouldn't even be considered a penguin, but it looks and acts like a penguin in pretty much everywhere, everywhere, except except instead of ice, it's hanging out with the tortoises.
- 46:19SPEAKER_05: This bird makes no sense.
- 46:20SPEAKER_05: Why is it in the Galapagos Islands?
- 46:22SPEAKER_05: The most isolated island chain in the world.
- 46:24SPEAKER_05: Here they are, way far from Antarctica, zero business on the islands, but walking in like they own the place.
- 46:31SPEAKER_05: It makes no sense, and all I have to do is is go to church and ask God why.
- 46:35SPEAKER_05: So that's that's my biggest thing with the Galapagos penguin.
- 46:39SPEAKER_03: That's that's absolutely fair.
- 46:41SPEAKER_03: Um we we decided prepod that we could only choose one penguin, uh, because obviously, you know, penguins are are a lot of people are gonna put penguins when you think about flightless birds.
- 46:53SPEAKER_03: It's just for good reasons.
- 46:55SPEAKER_03: For good reason, they're they're great animals.
- 46:57SPEAKER_03: Um, so I'm glad you chose that one.
- 47:00SPEAKER_03: Uh, my penguin species is the great oak, uh, extinct, been extinct.
- 47:07SPEAKER_03: Wow, extinct, wow, extinct species making the list.
- 47:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, extinct species making the list.
- 47:13SPEAKER_03: Uh, they were 30 to 33 inches tall, about 11 pounds, averaging uh powerful swimmers, man.
- 47:19SPEAKER_03: Could hold their breath for 15 minutes.
- 47:21SPEAKER_03: Is this a penguin?
- 47:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it is penguin.
- 47:23SPEAKER_03: It's called the Great Ok.
- 47:24SPEAKER_03: Oh, this is a penguin.
- 47:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, this is a penguin, it's a species of penguin.
- 47:28SPEAKER_03: Oh, I'm sorry.
- 47:29SPEAKER_05: I'm just used to my penguin species having the word in penguin.
- 47:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm out of the intelligence of a fourth grader.
- 47:34SPEAKER_05: I don't want to keep up otherwise.
- 47:36SPEAKER_03: This was different.
- 47:37SPEAKER_03: This was a whole different ball game.
- 47:38SPEAKER_03: Uh so cool of a penguin species that it doesn't have penguin in the name.
- 47:43SPEAKER_03: Um, 1844, apparently, was the last time the great auk existed.
- 47:48SPEAKER_03: That was a tough year.
- 47:49SPEAKER_03: It was a tough year all around.
- 47:51SPEAKER_03: And you know, when you lose the great auk, it's just uh it's it stinks, it's it's rough on society.
- 47:56SPEAKER_03: Uh a great food source for Neanderthals, uh, such as ourselves.
- 48:00SPEAKER_03: So I'm sure we would love having Great Auk as a part of our diet.
- 48:04SPEAKER_03: Uh me some Auk.
- 48:06SPEAKER_03: Hey, bro, hand me some Auk.
- 48:08SPEAKER_03: Um killed by humans uh later on to make stuff for pillows.
- 48:13SPEAKER_03: Uh, so they were used in European nations, uh, basically to lay down on and go to sleep.
- 48:20SPEAKER_03: Uh, it's a you know, just a tough scene for the Auk.
- 48:23SPEAKER_03: Um, and they made it for life.
- 48:25SPEAKER_03: This is something genuine, something uh very just just really nice to see.
- 48:30SPEAKER_03: The Great Awks made it for life.
- 48:32SPEAKER_05: Uh, no one nightstands with the great auk in a vapid world, it's nice to see some monogamy in the animal kingdom.
- 48:38SPEAKER_05: Just it is just gotta say.
- 48:39SPEAKER_05: And you know, for being so great, they don't they don't sound that awesome awesome.
- 48:44SPEAKER_05: I mean, great auk might have been a little cocky, like just to call them a great species to only to be eated outs or pillows of a system.
- 48:51SPEAKER_03: We weren't there, we weren't there.
- 48:53SPEAKER_03: It's true.
- 48:54SPEAKER_03: Where did these guys live?
- 48:55SPEAKER_03: European nations off the coasts of uh Norway.
- 49:00SPEAKER_05: So they were given the Galapagos penguin a run for its money, like yes, what's northern, but the galopus penguin has actually hung in there, unlike your great auk.
- 49:08SPEAKER_03: So that's that's true.
- 49:09SPEAKER_03: That's well, I mean, when you're isolated, when you just go out and no one's over no one's around there except a couple giant turtles, you know.
- 49:15SPEAKER_03: What you know, what are you gonna do?
- 49:16SPEAKER_03: So that's true.
- 49:17SPEAKER_03: Uh you know, some some would say the great auk actually, you know, tried to live and and you know, live a just you know, get in there, get in the action, and not just be off in some island.
- 49:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I appreciate the tenacity, but the great awk unfortunately graded himself out.
- 49:32SPEAKER_05: So all right, well, here we are.
- 49:34SPEAKER_05: Here we are at the end of the end of this amazing segment.
- 49:37SPEAKER_05: Here we go this this last one is once again.
- 49:40SPEAKER_05: This this is if this is one where you go to a confession booth and and beg the priest why why why, father, why does this animal exist?
- 49:52SPEAKER_05: You go to your preacher and say, I have a question for God, and this is what you're gonna this is what you're asking him about, and this is the New Zealand flightless parrot cockapoo.
- 50:02SPEAKER_05: This is the only flightless parrot in the world.
- 50:05SPEAKER_05: This parrot, this bird, it looks like a parrot in every conceivable way, like even its wings look like normal wings.
- 50:13SPEAKER_05: This I'm telling you, you look up the cockpoo right now, and it looks like a parrot in every way.
- 50:20SPEAKER_05: If you could just go down the list of parrot-ness, but it can't fly.
- 50:24SPEAKER_05: That's the only thing.
- 50:25SPEAKER_05: The bird can't fly, and you know what?
- 50:28SPEAKER_05: It only has 200 of it left because it can't fly.
- 50:33SPEAKER_05: Whenever humans discovered the island of New Zealand, they brought their dogs and cats and wrecked havoc on the cockpoo.
- 50:39SPEAKER_05: Because guess what?
- 50:40SPEAKER_05: This parrot, all of which can fly, can't fly, and there seems to be no reason why it can't fly.
- 50:48SPEAKER_05: I'm telling you, with the kiwi, it makes sense with penguins.
- 50:51SPEAKER_05: It makes sense.
- 50:52SPEAKER_05: Wherever you look at this bird, why can't it fly?
- 50:55SPEAKER_05: It's it might just be too dumb.
- 50:57SPEAKER_05: Like the dodo gets a bad rep.
- 50:59SPEAKER_05: Hey, honorable mention dodo gets a bad rep for not being able to fly, but it he didn't have any predators, it doesn't make sense.
- 51:06SPEAKER_05: But hey, hey, same with the flyless parrot, but it's a parrot, okay?
- 51:09SPEAKER_05: It should be able to fly.
- 51:10SPEAKER_05: I I can't.
- 51:11SPEAKER_05: I need to we need to wrap this episode up.
- 51:13SPEAKER_03: Do you how do they look are they colorful?
- 51:16SPEAKER_05: Do they look like they're a bright green, they're pretty in every way, dude.
- 51:20SPEAKER_05: I'm telling you, they look like a parrot in every conceivable way.
- 51:22SPEAKER_03: Like I'm not like every other every other parrot species was just like, hey, you know, we're gonna adjust, we're gonna learn to fly, you know, we're gonna go get that fruit at the top of the tree, and these guys are birds, you know what?
- 51:33SPEAKER_03: We're just gonna wait.
- 51:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm just gonna hang out here, hang out, wait for the stuff to fall to me, you know.
- 51:44SPEAKER_03: That's a good one.
- 51:45SPEAKER_05: I didn't mean what if you say it out loud.
- 51:47SPEAKER_05: Maybe that's us in bird form, but not really good for anything.
- 51:53SPEAKER_03: If we were parrots, we would be we would be these parrots.
- 51:57SPEAKER_05: It would be the cockapoo.
- 51:58SPEAKER_05: So the kakapoo rounds out my question to God.
- 52:01SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna go pray some to find some answers that will not come to me.
- 52:06SPEAKER_05: But what do you got for me at number one?
- 52:09SPEAKER_03: My number one is simple, it's the emu.
- 52:12SPEAKER_03: Um first off, that's first off.
- 52:15SPEAKER_03: Let me let me explain here.
- 52:17SPEAKER_03: Um, because after extensive research, I just realized how much more I loved this animal.
- 52:22SPEAKER_03: Um, first off, great commercial, Limu, emu and Doug.
- 52:25SPEAKER_05: I completely agree.
- 52:26SPEAKER_03: Great commercial overall.
- 52:28SPEAKER_03: Uh, I just you know, I just really like it.
- 52:30SPEAKER_03: The the the jingle, uh, it just works.
- 52:33SPEAKER_03: Uh it's better than the ostrich.
- 52:35SPEAKER_03: The ostrich is annoying, the ostrich is overrated, uh, the ostrich is too big.
- 52:40SPEAKER_03: Uh, the emu is better suited for life on this earth uh than the ostrich.
- 52:46SPEAKER_03: Um, girl power.
- 52:48SPEAKER_03: After the eggs are laid, the male has to sit on them for eight months.
- 52:52SPEAKER_03: Uh, the female does the hard work, and then she says, You can sit on this freaking thing.
- 52:57SPEAKER_05: So go that to give up her career for her children.
- 53:00SPEAKER_05: Like, no, exactly.
- 53:01SPEAKER_05: She has the career.
- 53:02SPEAKER_05: That's what we're talking about.
- 53:04SPEAKER_03: He takes maternity leave.
- 53:05SPEAKER_03: So, girl power with the emu.
- 53:08SPEAKER_03: Um, the only birds with calf muscles.
- 53:10SPEAKER_03: Uh, that's uh it's something.
- 53:13SPEAKER_03: I don't know what it is, but it's something I thought it was interesting to note.
- 53:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, but the real reason I've chosen the emu is because of the great emu war of 1932.
- 53:26SPEAKER_03: If you're unaware of this, please look it up uh on Wikipedia.
- 53:29SPEAKER_03: It is one of the most bizarre things I've ever come across on the internet, and that's saying something.
- 53:34SPEAKER_03: Um 20,000 emus were in the hunt for water and food in Australia, and uh Australia sent the seventh heavy battery of the Royal Australian artillery with machine guns and 10,000 rounds of ammunition to take care of these emus.
- 53:55SPEAKER_03: They thought, hey, that should be enough, right?
- 53:58SPEAKER_03: You know, sending uh the artillery with machine guns to kill these.
- 54:03SPEAKER_05: I'll take the guns, I'll take team guns against team birds.
- 54:07SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm on that, I'm on that side.
- 54:08SPEAKER_05: I understand.
- 54:09SPEAKER_03: You you'd expect in the article I read.
- 54:12SPEAKER_03: Uh, I'm gonna read just off of it.
- 54:14SPEAKER_03: They expected an easy slaughter.
- 54:19SPEAKER_03: The troops quickly found a flock of about 50 emus, but the birds scattered at the first shots, reportedly evaporating like mist.
- 54:30SPEAKER_03: Another ambush, two days later, claimed about a dozen emus from a group of a thousand.
- 54:37SPEAKER_03: So they only got a dozen out of the thousand emus.
- 54:42SPEAKER_03: And now I don't know if this is just the Australian military just being incompetent, kind of like Texas Tech Defense, just to kind of bring it back to you know what this podcast is actually about.
- 54:53SPEAKER_03: Military comparison to tech football.
- 54:57SPEAKER_03: Uh, even a truck-mounted gun failed when the emus outran the truck over rough tread.
- 55:03SPEAKER_03: These emus are resilient and they can escape a militia coming after them full of Australians.
- 55:12SPEAKER_03: So, this is why the emu was my number one choice.
- 55:15SPEAKER_05: Uh, so you're telling me it's emu one, Australian government zero.
- 55:19SPEAKER_05: Is that what you're telling me right now?
- 55:21SPEAKER_05: No, the emus one the one immaculate dub for a species that doesn't have hands.
- 55:25SPEAKER_03: That's all I've got is imagine if they were given the guns.
- 55:29SPEAKER_03: It would have been Australia would be overcome with the emus.
- 55:34SPEAKER_05: It would the emu would be the population, we'd be having diplomatic relations with the emu and not the Australians.
- 55:40SPEAKER_05: So absolutely.
- 55:41SPEAKER_05: This is this could have this could have happened.
- 55:44SPEAKER_05: And I mean, with the way Australians talk, is it that much different than negotiating with the emu?
- 55:49SPEAKER_03: No, it's not that much different.
- 55:51SPEAKER_03: The yeah, it's it's it's the uh what it the redneck British is what they call them.
- 55:56SPEAKER_05: I don't I don't know if I agree with saying the ostrich is overrated.
- 56:00SPEAKER_05: It's overrated.
- 56:01SPEAKER_05: I don't really understand how that relates.
- 56:03SPEAKER_05: The African species of ostrich versus the Australian emu.
- 56:08SPEAKER_03: The emu looks cooler, it's more reasonably sized.
- 56:13SPEAKER_03: You know, you like big, you like whales.
- 56:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, whales are my favorite animal.
- 56:18SPEAKER_03: What's too we're not talking whales, we're talking flightless birds right now.
- 56:21SPEAKER_03: Okay, we could talk whales another time.
- 56:23SPEAKER_03: Uh, but that's gonna be on the list.
- 56:25SPEAKER_03: We've lost far too many listeners at this point.
- 56:27SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, absolutely.
- 56:29SPEAKER_03: Let's please let's end this.
- 56:31SPEAKER_03: So we're ending it right now.
- 56:33SPEAKER_03: We are gonna give you a song of the week.
- 56:34SPEAKER_03: That's something we do every week, and we are gonna give you another episode this coming week.
- 56:38SPEAKER_03: We're gonna talk about the Iowa State game, we're gonna react to some of the basketball games.
- 56:42SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be a good time, gonna be a much better episode for a Texas Tech fan um than this one currently is.
- 56:49SPEAKER_03: But hopefully you enjoyed the first half when we talked about Joey McGuire.
- 56:52SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're hyped up about him.
- 56:53SPEAKER_03: But let's end it off with Song of the Week.
- 56:55SPEAKER_03: Tristan, what is your song of the week?
- 56:57SPEAKER_05: Bro, I'm keeping it Texas ties like herpy ho cut wanted.
- 57:02SPEAKER_05: I am gonna go with Pat Green, a Texas tech hero, proud alum, one of the godfathers of Texas music.
- 57:10SPEAKER_05: I'm going with girls from Texas.
- 57:13SPEAKER_05: I love that song.
- 57:14SPEAKER_05: I love the way it hypes up our Lone Star Ladies.
- 57:17SPEAKER_05: No disrespect to any of the uh out of say out of state or Red Raiders, but just I love the tribute to it, and he does it with a good buddy Lyle Love It, another Texas legend legend.
- 57:27SPEAKER_05: So love that song.
- 57:28SPEAKER_05: I thought it was good Texas vibes to get going for us here in a new era.
- 57:33SPEAKER_00: New York's got the fashion, and Florida's got the weather.
- 57:39SPEAKER_03: The girls from Texas, just a little bit better.
- 57:44SPEAKER_03: Boom.
- 57:44SPEAKER_03: That's a great choice.
- 57:45SPEAKER_03: Uh fantastic song.
- 57:47SPEAKER_03: He does contradict himself in that song a couple times.
- 57:50SPEAKER_03: Uh, I know it's mostly just to rhyme with the current state that he's talking about in the lyric.
- 57:55SPEAKER_03: I get it.
- 57:56SPEAKER_03: It's a great song.
- 57:57SPEAKER_03: It's hyping up Texas women.
- 57:59SPEAKER_03: You can't you can't hate it.
- 58:00SPEAKER_03: It's a solid jam.
- 58:02SPEAKER_03: What do you got for us?
- 58:04SPEAKER_03: I have um, I'm not gonna do Sweet Child of Mine, even though that that video surfaced of uh coach Coach Maguire singing the song.
- 58:11SPEAKER_03: It was a beautiful rendition, probably my favorite rendition of Sweet Child of Mine.
- 58:15SPEAKER_03: Maybe, maybe no, it's before the Step Brothers uh in the movie.
- 58:21SPEAKER_05: It's better than the Step Brothers one.
- 58:22SPEAKER_03: It's better than the Step Brothers one, but that one's right there.
- 58:24SPEAKER_03: Uh but no, I decided to keep it with the rock, the classic rock anthem, uh, here because I really feel like Joey Maguire is an ACDC guy, if I've ever seen one.
- 58:34SPEAKER_03: He's a hyped up individual, he is just ready to go at all moments of the day.
- 58:38SPEAKER_03: So I'm gonna do an ACDC song.
- 58:40SPEAKER_03: It's a long way to the top, if you want to rock and roll, is my song of the week, because it is gonna be quite the uh journey to get Texas Tech football back to being a national power like it was in the 2000s.
- 58:55SPEAKER_03: So it's a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll.
- 58:58SPEAKER_03: And I think Joey Maguire is ready for that challenge, and I think he's ready to bring Texas Tech back to the top.
- 59:04SPEAKER_04: So now we're still if they want to rock and roll.
- 59:16SPEAKER_05: In the words of Texas Tech head coach Joey Maguire, let's go.
- 59:20SPEAKER_05: That's all I gotta say after that song.
- 59:22SPEAKER_05: We're really going.
- 59:23SPEAKER_05: We really got two sides of the spectrum and energy there.
- 59:26SPEAKER_05: That's what he's gonna bring to the program because we need both.
- 59:28SPEAKER_05: We need the roots of Texas, but we need the hype of stardom.
- 59:32SPEAKER_05: Let's go.
- 59:32SPEAKER_05: New era.
- 59:33SPEAKER_05: Let's bring it out.
- 59:33SPEAKER_05: Let's bring it home, Steven.
- 59:35SPEAKER_03: We need the soft relationship building of recruitment to Texas Tech.
- 59:41SPEAKER_03: And then once you get on the field, we need the intensity of ACDC, the intensity of some hardcore rock to get out there and score some points and get some wins for Texas Tech.
- 59:51SPEAKER_03: I hope you enjoyed that song of the week from both of us.
