Latest / Real Money with Lisa Chastain / Dave Ramsey Knows His $1,000 Rule Doesn't Work (Here's Why He Still Pushes It)
Transcript
- 0:00Now people are saying, Dave, you need to adjust this because of
- 0:03inflation. No, stupid.
- 0:04It was never the right amount. It was never intended to be
- 0:08enough, $1000 is not enough. And by the way, $2000 is not
- 0:13enough, OK? If you follow personal financial
- 0:16management content, you probably saw it, especially if you follow
- 0:20Dave Ramsey. Dave Ramsey defended the $1000
- 0:23emergency fund. We know today $1000 is not
- 0:27enough. On top of that, no surprise,
- 0:29Dave Ramsey called his critics stupid.
- 0:31He admitted it's not enough money.
- 0:34He called critics stupid, and he admitted that it's not enough
- 0:37money. But he said you should do it
- 0:39anyway to prove you're serious. Are you kidding me?
- 0:43In 2026, we have to prove something to Dave Ramsey or
- 0:48anyone else that we're serious about our financial life and
- 0:51also to do something that doesn't work that he's been
- 0:54giving as advice for a decade, 2 decades, 3 decades is
- 0:59ridiculous. And here's the other thing.
- 1:01What I found in his comments was not motivation.
- 1:04I watched the video so you don't have to.
- 1:07And what I found real time was financial anxiety, real
- 1:11devastation, People who followed the baby steps, who made it to
- 1:15step 7, no debt, paid off their homes, probably cut up their
- 1:19credit cards and then lost everything in disasters.
- 1:22A mother drowning in $80,000 of medical debt after her husband's
- 1:27brain injury being told to go back to $1000.
- 1:31How tone deaf do you have to get as a financial influencer for
- 1:35people to eventually stop paying attention to you at all?
- 1:38Dave Ramsey, he calls it a process.
- 1:40I call it a safety trap. Having coached thousands of
- 1:44clients personally and individually, I'm here to tell
- 1:47you that the baby steps don't work anymore.
- 1:49And there's got to be an alternative and personal finance
- 1:52to following baby steps that fail you all of a sudden to find
- 1:55yourself in financial crisis. And then you're the asshole
- 1:58because you didn't follow the advice.
- 2:00Today I'm not just critiquing his philosophy.
- 2:03I'm giving you a smarter path, one that protects your nervous
- 2:07system and your long term wealth.
- 2:09Welcome back. This is Money Mindset
- 2:11unfiltered. And today I want to talk to you
- 2:13about the emotional truth behind personal financial management.
- 2:18If you're new to my channel, make sure that you subscribe
- 2:21like this video and share it out to anybody who may also be
- 2:24struggling with the Dave Ramsey philosophy.
- 2:27But having coached for over a decade, what I realized is that
- 2:30without another voice in this industry telling you to stop
- 2:34budgeting, people will revert to these steps as if they are truth
- 2:38and they are failing people. And I'm going to talk about why.
- 2:41Here's the structure. Save $1000.
- 2:44Then attack debt with gazelle like intensity.
- 2:47In his video, Dave Ramsey doubled down on his $1000.
- 2:51He doubled down. Why?
- 2:52Because he's under attack. Why?
- 2:54Because his truth is not truthing so much anymore.
- 2:58Why? Because it doesn't work.
- 3:00And yet he still argues and even says himself that $1000 isn't
- 3:05supposed to be enough. It's a commitment test.
- 3:09And if you're worried about inflation, you're missing the
- 3:12point. A commitment test?
- 3:14Really. A commitment test To prove to
- 3:17who? That you're ready to stop living
- 3:19paycheck to paycheck? That you're ready to prove to
- 3:21Dave Ramsey that you're ready to live a life like no other?
- 3:24Come on, you're missing the point.
- 3:26I have watched so much of his content and other influencers
- 3:31Who aspire to be just like him who berate people and shame
- 3:35people. And often sadly, people who
- 3:38follow Dave Ramsey's advice end up in worse situations.
- 3:42Let me be clear, inflation is not a mindset issue.
- 3:45It's a real thing. We've all experienced it since
- 3:48COVID, up and down businesses alike.
- 3:51Add tariffs on top of it. We're getting crunched all over
- 3:54the place. This has nothing to do with your
- 3:56commitment. It's math.
- 3:58It's math. The average emergency repair
- 4:01today, a major repair. Let's go through them here.
- 4:04We have medical car repairs, 1000 to 2000 dollars, 1000 to
- 4:09$3000 depending on the kind of car that you have.
- 4:11ER visit with deductible 1000 to $4000.
- 4:15Air conditioning goes out. We're ramping up for spring
- 4:17right now, 5000 to $10,000. And small businesses are getting
- 4:22squeezed on the other side of this too.
- 4:23So guess what? That means that your prices go
- 4:25up too. I work with an HVAC company.
- 4:28Their costs are going up, which means that your costs are going
- 4:31to go up. $1000 fund in 2026 is not protection.
- 4:35And fuck you Dave Ramsey for testing people and testing their
- 4:39commitment. I'm sick of it.
- 4:40It's symbolic. Today we're breaking down the
- 4:43behavioral argument, the inflation dismissal, the
- 4:46commitment test. Why would anybody ever have to
- 4:49be tested for their commitment? And I'm telling you that your
- 4:52behaviors are not wrong. You are not a horrible or stupid
- 4:56human being because of the choices that you make.
- 4:58And if you're hearing this for the first time, welcome to my
- 5:01channel because we're having open, honest conversations about
- 5:04what really does transform your relationship with money.
- 5:07And it's not with starting by testing your commitment or
- 5:10proving it to anyone, especially Dave Ramsey.
- 5:13The root of financial healing and safety is not shame.
- 5:18Financial anxiety is not cured by intensity, it's cured by
- 5:22margin. Financial anxiety is not cured
- 5:25by intensity. Like going after something like
- 5:28a gazelle, that actually adds to the anxiety.
- 5:31It puts the timer on, it sets a clock, and that's the last thing
- 5:35you need when you're feeling crunched financially.
- 5:37It's not cured by intensity, it's actually cured by margin.
- 5:42And let me explain to you what that means.
- 5:43Ramsey says that your financial problems are behavioral.
- 5:46And actually, what I've watched over the last few years is the
- 5:50Ramsey camp shifting gear to emotions, realizing that they've
- 5:55been attacking people's behaviors and choices for so
- 5:58long, but that the root of financial healing and the root
- 6:03of changing your financial pathway is actually looking by
- 6:06looking at your emotions and your nervous system first.
- 6:09So I'm glad to see that a little bit of those things are turning
- 6:12around. But by and large, him defending
- 6:14a position that he knows doesn't work anymore.
- 6:17I've got to tell you, we have to stop just looking at our
- 6:20behaviors as the problems. Financially, there is so much
- 6:23more to it. It's there to catch the little
- 6:26stuff, he says. Here's the flaw.
- 6:29You can't separate behavior from biology.
- 6:32You can't separate behavior from identity.
- 6:35You can't separate behavior from emotions.
- 6:38It's all connected. It's all connected.
- 6:41It's not just behavioral. When you live with 0 margin,
- 6:46your nervous system goes into survival mode.
- 6:49And the truth is that you've lived with 0 margin paycheck to
- 6:52paycheck, no money in savings. And for a lot of you who may
- 6:56have followed Dave Ramsey's advice also you cut up all your
- 6:59credit cards and ruled out debt all together, which leaves you
- 7:03with no safety net. So no margin and no safety net
- 7:08leaves you in a predicament and it just puts your nervous system
- 7:11and amps up your nervous system tenfold.
- 7:14So you're you're back in a scarcity and survival
- 7:17conversation. First, we have to calm that
- 7:20down. Financial stress and anxiety
- 7:23elevates cortisol. It reduces executive
- 7:26functioning. When your nervous system is
- 7:29overactive, it shuts down your executive functioning and
- 7:33impairs long term planning. You go straight into survival,
- 7:37straight into fear, straight into scarcity.
- 7:40And $1000 in savings is only perpetuating that.
- 7:43It's not testing your commitment.
- 7:45It's giving you false advice that Dave Ramsey himself says no
- 7:51longer works. This is the neuroscience of it,
- 7:55not opinion. This is not just my opinion.
- 7:57After years and years and years of training and supporting my
- 8:02clients in nervous system regulation and also
- 8:05understanding how our brain chemistry and our decisions
- 8:08actually work, I'm telling you that Dave Ramsey himself is
- 8:13outing himself by saying, yeah, it's bullshit.
- 8:16So let's stop listening to that kind of advice and stop
- 8:18believing that you're stupid. You're not stupid.
- 8:21There are legitimate reasons why you make the decisions that you
- 8:24make. Very first piece I give to my
- 8:26clients of advice I give to my clients is let's slow it down.
- 8:29Let's slow it down rather than attacking debt like a gazelle or
- 8:33what I call debt dumping. Rather than debt dumping, let's
- 8:36slow the train down and let's take all of your credit card
- 8:40payments down to the minimum. OK, let's take all of our credit
- 8:44card payments down to the minimum and let's start stacking
- 8:47cash. And here's why.
- 8:49I read one of the comments in Dave Ramsey's video where
- 8:51someone was stuck at what she called baby step zero, working
- 8:55full time. She can't hit $1000.
- 8:58She feels ashamed. She feels ashamed because she
- 9:00can't hit $1000. And Dave Ramsey perpetuates this
- 9:03conversation. His answer?
- 9:05Work harder. Get a second job.
- 9:07Here's mine. If you're not able to yet save
- 9:10$1000 while working full time, this is not a discipline issue,
- 9:15it's a margin issue. You've got to stabilize your
- 9:17cash flow. Get ahold of your cash flow
- 9:20first. Okay, yes, maybe add some
- 9:23temporary income if necessary. But let's frame it as a bridge.
- 9:27Not punishment, not as failure, not as stupidity.
- 9:31OK, don't yet strip down your life to emotional bare walls to
- 9:36force $50.00 into savings. Let's look at your cash flow,
- 9:40understand what money is coming in and going out, and set up new
- 9:44systems to win. In this economy, there's no
- 9:47little stuff. A $2000 emergency wipes what you
- 9:50have saved for $1000 instantly. And then what?
- 9:54The system didn't fail you because you lack intensity or
- 9:58you lack commitment. It failed because it ignored
- 10:01scale. And to be honest, Dave Ramsey
- 10:03doesn't care. In another story I read from
- 10:05someone who actually hit baby step 7.
- 10:08Then they lost everything to disaster.
- 10:10A mother with $80,000 in medical debt after her husband's brain
- 10:15injury, $1200 a month in minimum payments.
- 10:18Ramsey's framework would say go back to step one, save $1000
- 10:23start. That advice completely ignores
- 10:25the situation that she's in and also increases financial
- 10:29anxiety. Here's the resolution.
- 10:31If you fall them backwards, safety first, debt second.
- 10:35If you're in a crisis, cash is oxygen.
- 10:39Take your extra payments down. Pay the minimum payments.
- 10:42Only give yourself a minute to breathe before you keep focusing
- 10:47on the fact that you have to get out of debt because Dave Ramsey
- 10:50tells you that it's bad. First, let's build you a real
- 10:53wall of protection. Get back to the basics.
- 10:56Get your expenses down to a minimum, but remember that you
- 10:59still have to eat and spending money isn't bad.
- 11:03Yes, that may delay debt payoff. It may.
- 11:06But no, that doesn't mean that you failed.
- 11:09A rigid system that ignores trauma creates shame loops.
- 11:13You should. You just survived a crisis.
- 11:15This is not financial incompetence.
- 11:17So Dave Ramsey calls the low number a commitment test.
- 11:21He says fear motivates, Fear motivates short term.
- 11:25It is not sustainable. Fear does not motivate.
- 11:29Actually, fear perpetuates more fear and more shame and more
- 11:34financial failure. Fear comes from away from
- 11:37motivation, trying to get out of a situation.
- 11:40This is where we see debt cycles loop over and over and over
- 11:44again. Because if you're using fear to
- 11:45motivate yourself in your nervous system, actually what
- 11:49you're doing is you're triggering a response to get out
- 11:51of debt. If your only job or objective is
- 11:55to get out of debt, the motivation is there.
- 11:58Fear is very temporary. It may temporarily create
- 12:01results for you. So then you get out of debt, or
- 12:04you pay down some debt and then your nervous system is on
- 12:07overload. Maybe some of you have found
- 12:09yourselves in functional freeze where you wake up one day and
- 12:13you're absolutely positively exhausted.
- 12:15Or you've used fear to motivate you to get out of debt.
- 12:20You pay off the debt, and then what happens?
- 12:22Exactly what we're seeing here. Financial catastrophe happens.
- 12:26Something else. Life starts lifing again.
- 12:29If you only ever have $1000 in your savings account, you can't
- 12:32rebound that fast. And if you spent all of your
- 12:35time trying to build the muscle of getting out of debt, when you
- 12:38get out of debt, you lose the motivation because you've been
- 12:41using fear to motivate you instead of a healed nervous
- 12:45system. Fear will only perpetuate the
- 12:47cycle over and over again. And I can bet that there are a
- 12:50lot of Dave Ramsey fans who have gotten out of debt only to find
- 12:54themselves back into debt. Because fear does not motivate
- 12:58long term. Chronic fear impairs cognition.
- 13:01If you suspect A layoff, for example, which a lot of
- 13:04Americans are going through that right now, right now, you just
- 13:07need to stop aggressively paying off your debt and hoard your
- 13:10cash. Ignore the prescribed step in
- 13:14the US. In many U.S. cities, $1000
- 13:16covers less than one month of rent and some markets less than
- 13:20a week. Your emergency fund should match
- 13:22your reality. Build what I call a sleep at
- 13:25night fund for some of you, $5000 for others.
- 13:29Three to six months of expenses. Personal finance management must
- 13:33reduce financial anxiety, not manufacture it.
- 13:36That's all Dave Ramsey has done for years, by the way.
- 13:39Manufacture shame, anxiety and fear so that you keep coming
- 13:43back over and over again. And then he gets to be your
- 13:47hero. But guess what?
- 13:48In this video, your hero lashed out at you.
- 13:51He told you exactly what he thinks.
- 13:53He knows it doesn't work, but he wants to test your commitment.
- 13:57That is not personal financial advice.
- 14:00That is someone who is on a mission for views, ratings and
- 14:04likes. If your system requires you to
- 14:07stay scared, to stay compliant, that is not discipline.
- 14:11That is dependency. What this comes down to is Dave
- 14:14Ramsey's authority. His model requires submission
- 14:18into a rigid formula. I reject that completely.
- 14:21You are the CEO of your household and if $1000 leaves
- 14:25you exposed, increase it. If you need six months to build
- 14:28real safety before debt acceleration, do it.
- 14:32This is not rebellion. This is strategic sequencing.
- 14:36Wealth is built from stability. Stability requires margin.
- 14:40Margin in your nervous system and margin in your account.
- 14:43Margin reduces financial anxiety.
- 14:46This is personal finance management rooted in nervous
- 14:49system regulation, not hazing rituals.
- 14:52So here's your challenge today. Look at your savings and ask
- 14:56yourself honestly, does this amount make me feel safe or does
- 15:00it make me feel anxious? If it creates anxiety, adjust.
- 15:04You don't need permission to build more safety.
- 15:06You need some math thing. You need support.
- 15:09You need margin. You need agency.
- 15:12And if this resonates with you, subscribe.
- 15:14We'll keep challenging outdated financial advice and building
- 15:17frameworks that protect your money and your mind.
- 15:20Trust your instincts, build real safety, and I'll see you next
- 15:24time.
