- 0:17Speaker 1: now your hosts, Casey Smith and Tyler Jones.
- 0:23Speaker 2: It's December that chases on the chase to find the
- 0:27Speaker 2: rut action.
- 0:28Speaker 3: This is rut Fresh. Let's go. What's going on? Everyone?
- 0:49Speaker 2: Welcome were rut Fresh Radio. I'm your host k Cy Smith.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Tyler Jones is here as well. We're brought to you
- 0:54Speaker 2: by First Lag Year. It is cold this time of year,
- 0:59Speaker 2: and it's good time to bundle up and maximize they'll
- 1:04Speaker 2: warmth man. I mean, one of the things that we're
- 1:07Speaker 2: hearing from people around the country is that there is
- 1:10Speaker 2: some cold fronts that have been rolling through and that
- 1:12Speaker 2: cold weather is good for deer hunting, as we all know. Tyler,
- 1:17Speaker 2: do you actually like hunting cold fronts?
- 1:19Speaker 4: I do?
- 1:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I love it. You when's when's the time to
- 1:23Speaker 2: be there? Do you like to like feel the front
- 1:27Speaker 2: roll in or do you like like it personally?
- 1:29Speaker 4: Yeah? I do, but I don't know that. I don't
- 1:31Speaker 4: know that I can like correlate.
- 1:33Speaker 5: Uh, I don't know that like off hand, I can
- 1:36Speaker 5: correlate any success with that necessarily, But I like to
- 1:39Speaker 5: be there when it's rolling in and things get hype.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:44Speaker 4: I just noticed.
- 1:44Speaker 5: I've always this is something that may or may not
- 1:47Speaker 5: make sense to people. But when at the first day
- 1:49Speaker 5: that it kind of got cold, if it ever did
- 1:52Speaker 5: that in a Texas football season for US, people went
- 1:54Speaker 5: nuts on the field, like people were losing their mind.
- 1:57Speaker 5: Everybody was ready to chop their feet and do all
- 1:59Speaker 5: the stuff and be ready to you know, they were
- 2:01Speaker 5: just moving around, and I feel like deer kind of
- 2:04Speaker 5: the same way. It's like that first day of the
- 2:06Speaker 5: cold front. I know a lot of people love the
- 2:09Speaker 5: first South after a couple of norths or whatever, but
- 2:12Speaker 5: I like the first I like them north winds too.
- 2:14Speaker 2: I feel like the cold front gets the young bucks
- 2:17Speaker 2: up and moving, and that in turn like just kind
- 2:20Speaker 2: of mixes a lot of stuff up.
- 2:23Speaker 3: At least that's kind of what I observe, you know.
- 2:26Speaker 4: I think then those get up and eat man.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Yeah, that's probably true too, especially this time of year,
- 2:30Speaker 2: because that's what we're really doing. It's not as much
- 2:32Speaker 2: depending on where you're at right And that's one of
- 2:34Speaker 2: the things we're going to discuss in today's ret Fresh episodes,
- 2:37Speaker 2: because you know, a lot of the southern states are
- 2:39Speaker 2: really starting to come into their own for the rut
- 2:40Speaker 2: right now. But that cold weather definitely makes those deer
- 2:45Speaker 2: hit those foods horses earlier in the afternoon, and a
- 2:47Speaker 2: lot of times with these cold fronts too, they kind
- 2:49Speaker 2: of correspond with overcast days, which is what I'm looking
- 2:52Speaker 2: at out the window right now, and that also seems
- 2:55Speaker 2: to just be a pretty good thing for deer. They
- 2:59Speaker 2: tend to maybe just spend a little more time on
- 3:01Speaker 2: their feats whenever you.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Got to overcast day.
- 3:04Speaker 2: But the bluebird days are good to you know, quite honestly,
- 3:07Speaker 2: any reason is a good reason to kind of get
- 3:09Speaker 2: optimistic about going deer hunting. And I can make any
- 3:11Speaker 2: day sound like a good deer hunting day. You know, Oh,
- 3:13Speaker 2: it's a hundred degrees, they're gonna be drinking water. Better
- 3:14Speaker 2: go hunt that water, you know. So there's always something
- 3:17Speaker 2: and a good reason to try to go out there
- 3:20Speaker 2: and hit it.
- 3:21Speaker 5: You can either be optimistic and go hunting, or you
- 3:24Speaker 5: can be pessimistic and probably not go.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Hunting, you know, yeah, how do you feel about that?
- 3:29Speaker 2: How do you feel about the guys? I shouldn't say
- 3:32Speaker 2: it that way. How do you feel about the concept of
- 3:35Speaker 2: hunt less and kill more?
- 3:39Speaker 4: I think it depends on what you got to hunt.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's kind of property specific.
- 3:45Speaker 5: Huh, Yeah, I do. But I definitely like to hunt more,
- 3:49Speaker 5: which is why I do this.
- 3:51Speaker 3: It's good travel around. Yeah, you know, you travel around,
- 3:53Speaker 3: you can hunt more.
- 3:55Speaker 5: But I'm all about if it don't work on a property,
- 3:57Speaker 5: go somewhere else and hunt. I mean, find some public
- 4:01Speaker 5: or whatever and go hunt that day if you got
- 4:04Speaker 5: the day to hunt, you know, I mean, I just
- 4:07Speaker 5: I mean, in all transparency and honesty. When I first
- 4:11Speaker 5: you know, from the time I was young, all I
- 4:14Speaker 5: ever wanted to do was hunting fish. I mean, that
- 4:17Speaker 5: is what I wanted to be doing at all times.
- 4:19Speaker 5: So I just tried to find a way to do
- 4:23Speaker 5: that every day. And so if I could be in
- 4:25Speaker 5: the woods every day, I don't think it would bother
- 4:27Speaker 5: me at all.
- 4:28Speaker 2: If you have Let's give something scenario specific here, and
- 4:31Speaker 2: this works really well for this time of year because
- 4:34Speaker 2: deer are definitely shifting to more of a bed to
- 4:36Speaker 2: food type pattern. There's still some red action going on
- 4:38Speaker 2: depending on where you're in the country and just depending
- 4:40Speaker 2: on the deer you have, because I guarantee you is
- 4:42Speaker 2: somewhere in Saskatchewan right now there's a deer thinking about
- 4:45Speaker 2: chasing a doe. But in general things are different in December.
- 4:52Speaker 2: So let's just have that mine. You have sixty acres,
- 4:55Speaker 2: You've got some food that the deer traveling to, but
- 4:59Speaker 2: it's a fairly small part.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Carsel.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Is it worth having a couple different sets for a
- 5:02Speaker 2: couple different winds on that thing, or should you just
- 5:04Speaker 2: set it up for like the the wind that you
- 5:08Speaker 2: know is the best killing wind. I mean, I think
- 5:10Speaker 2: if you can make it work, be great. I've got
- 5:13Speaker 2: a hunted up. I don't know exactly what it is,
- 5:16Speaker 2: but anyway, it's less than thirty acres and I was
- 5:19Speaker 2: hunting it like jumping all around. And really I mean
- 5:25Speaker 2: I say all around. I wasn't hunting all over the property,
- 5:27Speaker 2: but I was hunting all over an area that the deer.
- 5:30Speaker 2: I mean, as a bow hunter, you can't shoot. You
- 5:32Speaker 2: could shoot a hundred yards, you're probably not gonna hit it. Still, advise,
- 5:36Speaker 2: so you know you want to get closer. So I
- 5:40Speaker 2: mean a movement.
- 5:41Speaker 5: A move helps you to get in boat range, and
- 5:43Speaker 5: I think that's where you know, maybe you learn you
- 5:46Speaker 5: learned and you know enough about it, or maybe the
- 5:48Speaker 5: pinch is good enough, or maybe you know, whatever it is,
- 5:52Speaker 5: you've set it up so that you can have shots
- 5:54Speaker 5: and you got one place. But I think, like overall,
- 5:56Speaker 5: I think be being willing to have some sets, especially
- 5:58Speaker 5: on sixty acres, would be pretty good.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I think so too.
- 6:02Speaker 2: I think that it's going to depend on what time
- 6:04Speaker 2: of year it is, how hard you want to push
- 6:06Speaker 2: that just off wind right where you don't want to
- 6:09Speaker 2: mess it up early October by hunting something it's a
- 6:11Speaker 2: little bit risky, but for a lot of guys just
- 6:14Speaker 2: kind of do your die time because Christmas is coming
- 6:15Speaker 2: up and you kind of need to get your buck
- 6:17Speaker 2: keeled if you're going to do it. So it's a
- 6:19Speaker 2: good time of year to take some risks, especially when
- 6:22Speaker 2: the deer are thinking really hard with their stomachs. So
- 6:26Speaker 2: that's a little bit of a pump you up to
- 6:29Speaker 2: get out there and go hunting, because man, deer season
- 6:31Speaker 2: is not over. It is absolutely rocking and rolling and
- 6:34Speaker 2: in a lot of parts of the country. It's like
- 6:36Speaker 2: the best that it can be.
- 6:37Speaker 3: You know.
- 6:37Speaker 2: We're gonna talk to some guys today that are just
- 6:40Speaker 2: all up in the rut action right now.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Right who were talking to today talk.
- 6:43Speaker 5: Well, we got a bunch of guys, a lot of
- 6:45Speaker 5: them from the South, because that's where a lot of
- 6:47Speaker 5: the stuff's going on right now. In fact, many of
- 6:50Speaker 5: the guys that we know and follow on social media
- 6:53Speaker 5: platforms from the north are having some trouble right now
- 6:56Speaker 5: and they're just hunting some cold weather and not see
- 6:58Speaker 5: a whole lot of deer. So people we know that
- 7:00Speaker 5: are getting after it and doing stuff right now and
- 7:02Speaker 5: having some success. We've gotten in touch with what they
- 7:05Speaker 5: happen to be from places like Alabama, where Parker McDonald
- 7:08Speaker 5: will be giving us a report doing the double up
- 7:12Speaker 5: outdoors saying that this has been happening, you know, for
- 7:15Speaker 5: some people. But justin Henry was in Georgia this last
- 7:19Speaker 5: week and had some success with his daughter there that
- 7:24Speaker 5: he hunts all that stuff way out in the southeast
- 7:26Speaker 5: and is a good correspondent for us there. Matt died
- 7:30Speaker 5: in Missouri, So you're getting your Midwest fix if you're
- 7:33Speaker 5: that kind of person.
- 7:35Speaker 4: Matt is just kind of one of them dudes. You
- 7:37Speaker 4: just you don't.
- 7:38Speaker 5: You don't hear it from him all the time, but
- 7:39Speaker 5: he's out there doing it, you know what I mean.
- 7:41Speaker 5: And then Troy Waldron killed an absolute slammer in Texas
- 7:46Speaker 5: this past week, and he's going to give us a
- 7:49Speaker 5: report from the home state while we're not even there.
- 7:53Speaker 3: That's awesome. Let's get the reports on the phone.
- 7:58Speaker 2: I have got my brother, Parker mc donald was Southern
- 8:00Speaker 2: Collective and he normally has the voice of an angel,
- 8:06Speaker 2: but today he sounds like a dog that fell out
- 8:09Speaker 2: the back of the truck.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Parker, what was happening, man.
- 8:12Speaker 6: Man, I bized to anybody. Yes, so listen to a voice.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Now.
- 8:16Speaker 2: You sound like you've been you've been hunting, but also
- 8:20Speaker 2: like mouth calling turkeys all week where your voice is
- 8:22Speaker 2: finally scratchy. Have you been like hollering at them deer
- 8:25Speaker 2: or what made your voice do that?
- 8:28Speaker 6: That? That is actually not far from the truth. I'm
- 8:32Speaker 6: being honest with you. It's been really really cold.
- 8:36Speaker 7: It's been super cold, and I've been kind of a
- 8:37Speaker 7: little bit, a little bit under the weather.
- 8:39Speaker 6: But it's the freaking rut, you know.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I gotta go. Alabama is rocking and rolling right now.
- 8:44Speaker 6: Huh it is, man, And.
- 8:46Speaker 4: Oh I thought you remember the football team.
- 8:48Speaker 8: Sorry no, no, not.
- 8:51Speaker 9: Now.
- 8:53Speaker 10: No.
- 8:53Speaker 7: Luckily for me, I'm I'm not an Alabama fan.
- 8:57Speaker 5: So what's the it's going. It's going like the deer
- 9:01Speaker 5: just running wild through the woods right now?
- 9:03Speaker 4: Or is that not the case?
- 9:05Speaker 6: Yeah, it is. It is the case. And it's funny that.
- 9:07Speaker 7: You brought it up turkey hunting, like I feel like
- 9:10Speaker 7: I've been turky in because that's been a huge part
- 9:11Speaker 7: of my week this week, is calling and grunning the deer,
- 9:15Speaker 7: and it's been unreal how well it's worked.
- 9:18Speaker 2: So what's the scenario on that then? Are you calling
- 9:20Speaker 2: it deer that you see or are you blind grunting?
- 9:23Speaker 6: Usually it's blind grunning, but sometimes it's not.
- 9:25Speaker 7: Sometimes I see a deer and I grunt, And there's
- 9:28Speaker 7: just such a high percentage if you do it at
- 9:30Speaker 7: the right time of the year, there's such a highest
- 9:32Speaker 7: percentage that I've seen of deer coming like coming to
- 9:36Speaker 7: investigate it. Now, they may try to get down the
- 9:38Speaker 7: wind and screw you up or whatever.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Yeah, what phase is Alabama in right now? Then?
- 9:45Speaker 7: Well, over the last over the last two days, every
- 9:51Speaker 7: camera that I've got out, every buck that I have
- 9:55Speaker 7: been watching since October has daylighted in the last two days.
- 10:01Speaker 7: In this seeking I believe it's the seeking phase, which
- 10:04Speaker 7: in that seeking phase, you find a lot of bucks
- 10:06Speaker 7: are really aggressive. They've got so much testosterone and it
- 10:10Speaker 7: does it just doesn't take much to piss them off.
- 10:14Speaker 7: But every camera I've got I've been seeing the last
- 10:19Speaker 7: I guess three days now, it's been just just lights out.
- 10:25Speaker 7: And then my experiences I've been in the woods those
- 10:26Speaker 7: days too, uh, and my experience and this time of
- 10:31Speaker 7: the year is always just like this. Once it's flips,
- 10:33Speaker 7: once they go into that cruising or seeking phase of
- 10:37Speaker 7: the rut. It's like it's it's the times when the
- 10:40Speaker 7: woods feel like a zoo. It's like, just go be
- 10:42Speaker 7: in the woods and if you're if you halfway know
- 10:45Speaker 7: what you're doing, there's a good chance you can kill
- 10:47Speaker 7: a deer or see one.
- 10:51Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 10:51Speaker 7: Well, I'll be honest with you, it's good news for
- 10:53Speaker 7: everybody in a state like Alabama or like East Texas
- 10:56Speaker 7: where you guys are at. We all know there's just
- 10:59Speaker 7: some there's just the those days where it just feels
- 11:02Speaker 7: like it's magic in the air, and you don't feel
- 11:05Speaker 7: like you did anything different than you do before. But
- 11:08Speaker 7: it's just like, wow, I saw eight bucks today or whatever.
- 11:12Speaker 5: So so with that, you know, going forward to the
- 11:15Speaker 5: next week, are you going to use a grunt call
- 11:17Speaker 5: or rattling antlers more often?
- 11:19Speaker 7: I think I think here at home, I think I
- 11:22Speaker 7: would say grunt like the.
- 11:25Speaker 6: Way that I typically do. I'll tell you guys what happened.
- 11:27Speaker 6: I mean, two days ago.
- 11:29Speaker 7: I was I was set up on a deer that
- 11:31Speaker 7: I had come out in the daylight the morning before,
- 11:35Speaker 7: and it was I mean, I was as deep as I've.
- 11:37Speaker 6: Ever been on public land.
- 11:39Speaker 7: Like to give you guys an example, I got I
- 11:42Speaker 7: got to the boat ramp at three o'clock and I
- 11:45Speaker 7: didn't get set up until like after six thirty.
- 11:50Speaker 3: Oh wow, okay, yeah yeah, yeah yeah dude.
- 11:54Speaker 7: And it was just like it was just it's those
- 11:58Speaker 7: kind of days that those are the one am days,
- 12:00Speaker 7: you know, And I knew I needed to be where
- 12:02Speaker 7: I needed to be at like and and so I
- 12:05Speaker 7: got up there and uh, right after daylight, a buck
- 12:10Speaker 7: chases a dough in the holler back behind me, real deep,
- 12:13Speaker 7: thick collar, and I could hear him grunting a lot.
- 12:16Speaker 6: Like when I say a lot.
- 12:19Speaker 7: I mean have you ever have you guys ever heard
- 12:21Speaker 7: those woodpeckers or whatever they are that almost sound like
- 12:23Speaker 7: a grunt, and they can fool you every once in
- 12:25Speaker 7: a while.
- 12:27Speaker 6: It was like that sound. But he was.
- 12:29Speaker 7: Changing the tone of his voice, and I could hear
- 12:31Speaker 7: them running around, and I'd already seen them one time.
- 12:33Speaker 7: I'd got glimpses up, so I knew it was deer,
- 12:36Speaker 7: and I knew it was a grunt. And he was
- 12:38Speaker 7: probably grunting thirty times a minute, you know, like it
- 12:41Speaker 7: was just back and forth. So later in the morning,
- 12:44Speaker 7: they had worked their way all the way, like directly
- 12:47Speaker 7: behind me, and they weren't very far, and I was like,
- 12:50Speaker 7: you know what, I'm about to turkey hunt this pool,
- 12:53Speaker 7: and so I.
- 12:54Speaker 6: Grabbed my I grabbed my grunt too, and I just
- 12:57Speaker 6: started grunting.
- 12:58Speaker 7: I'd grunt, then he'd grunt, then I'd grunt, then than
- 13:00Speaker 7: I'd grunt. Then I changed my tone a little bit,
- 13:03Speaker 7: you know, and he did the same thing.
- 13:05Speaker 6: And I could hear them.
- 13:06Speaker 7: I could hear their footsteps back behind me, chasing and stuff,
- 13:10Speaker 7: and it was like it was so thinking cool.
- 13:13Speaker 6: Well, as I'm.
- 13:15Speaker 7: Turning around trying to figure out how can get a shot,
- 13:18Speaker 7: I start hearing the footsteps get closer and closer and
- 13:20Speaker 7: closer and closer.
- 13:22Speaker 6: And I realized, that's not that book. There's another year
- 13:25Speaker 6: behind me.
- 13:25Speaker 7: So I turned back around in my saddle and I
- 13:28Speaker 7: see this nice buck walking straight towards me. And that
- 13:33Speaker 7: was all from He was absolutely one hundred percent coming
- 13:36Speaker 7: to He probably heard fifty plus grunts in the last
- 13:41Speaker 7: five minutes right there, and he was coming to it.
- 13:44Speaker 7: And that's what I mean by like it almost feels.
- 13:48Speaker 6: It felt like a turkey hunt. That really felt like
- 13:49Speaker 6: a turkey hunt. It was freaking awesome.
- 13:51Speaker 3: It sounds sick, man.
- 13:52Speaker 2: So looking forward to this week, you have kind of
- 13:57Speaker 2: more of the same, good rout dates, good temperatures. Are
- 13:59Speaker 2: you you still thinking it's gonna be on fire for
- 14:03Speaker 2: the next seven days?
- 14:04Speaker 6: I think it'll be. I think it'll be really good
- 14:06Speaker 6: for about the next three days.
- 14:09Speaker 7: This rain that we got today, I think it's gonna
- 14:12Speaker 7: kill the action for the day.
- 14:13Speaker 6: I really do, because it's hot and rainy.
- 14:16Speaker 7: But it's supposed to get back down into like the
- 14:19Speaker 7: twenties in the later part of the week, I believe
- 14:22Speaker 7: if that's still in the forecast, and I think in
- 14:25Speaker 7: that time, but I also think there's gonna be a
- 14:27Speaker 7: little bit of a shift and it's gonna be a
- 14:29Speaker 7: lot more like that, just a hardcore chasing and without
- 14:33Speaker 7: much rhyme or reason on where they're at. So sitting
- 14:36Speaker 7: a funnel is gonna be, Man, I think if sitting
- 14:39Speaker 7: a funnel in the next week is probably gonna be
- 14:42Speaker 7: lights out, way to kill a hill country.
- 14:44Speaker 5: Dear, if you're sitting in a funnel in the next week,
- 14:46Speaker 5: and on scale of one to ten, what's the buck
- 14:48Speaker 5: movement gonna be?
- 14:48Speaker 3: Like?
- 14:50Speaker 7: If I'm going by what it's been with the what
- 14:53Speaker 7: the buck movement's been the last two days, I would
- 14:55Speaker 7: say in the last two days it's.
- 14:56Speaker 6: Been a ten.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Let's go oh wow, yeah, I have.
- 15:03Speaker 7: I genuinely felt like in the last two days, if
- 15:05Speaker 7: you just set up in the woods, you're probably gonna
- 15:06Speaker 7: see a buck.
- 15:07Speaker 12: And I'm beat now, Alabama, Parker, I mean, get here
- 15:12Speaker 12: quick because it's not gonna last long. Well, thanks, man,
- 15:17Speaker 12: I appreciate the report.
- 15:19Speaker 7: The good thing about Alabama is, man, we got ruts
- 15:22Speaker 7: until the end of freaking February.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Sure, you chased this.
- 15:25Speaker 5: Around somewhere to go every every time of the late
- 15:28Speaker 5: season now in Alabama. I appreciate the report, Parker, and
- 15:31Speaker 5: hopefully we'll catch up with you again soon.
- 15:34Speaker 6: Hey, guys, I appreciate you having me on.
- 15:35Speaker 7: I apologize anybody listening to this voice, this annoying voice
- 15:38Speaker 7: that I got right.
- 15:39Speaker 4: Now on the phone.
- 15:42Speaker 5: A very familiar guy, justin Henry, and he's been in Georgia.
- 15:45Speaker 5: Seems like there's been some success. Maybe there's a deer down.
- 15:48Speaker 5: How's everything going, dude.
- 15:50Speaker 10: It's going good, man, coming off a pretty good weekend.
- 15:53Speaker 10: It was a first so it was a good one.
- 15:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:57Speaker 13: So, first of what, first you were my seven year
- 16:01Speaker 13: old daughter being out in the woods with me. I
- 16:06Speaker 13: got three daughters and my oldest has been hunting and
- 16:09Speaker 13: we've had success, but my seven year old has never
- 16:12Speaker 13: been out.
- 16:13Speaker 10: And she sat in the blind for the first time, and.
- 16:18Speaker 13: Not too long after we had a nice mature dough
- 16:20Speaker 13: come out and she looked at me and I looked
- 16:23Speaker 13: at her.
- 16:23Speaker 10: I said, you want me to shoot? The smile on
- 16:26Speaker 10: her face was the greatest thing in the world.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Bad man.
- 16:29Speaker 13: Yeah, yeah, so yeah, we were successful.
- 16:32Speaker 10: We got ourselves a nice dough.
- 16:34Speaker 4: That's cool.
- 16:34Speaker 5: So what are the deer doing in Georgia right now
- 16:37Speaker 5: where you're hunting?
- 16:39Speaker 13: Well, that weekend was extremely cold, bitterly cold. I feel
- 16:44Speaker 13: like was like twenty eight twenty seven. That's South Georgia.
- 16:49Speaker 13: I think I said it last week, you know, I
- 16:51Speaker 13: think in the South that cold cold weather than first
- 16:53Speaker 13: day or two, it kind of freaks them out.
- 16:56Speaker 10: This movement in the evening.
- 16:58Speaker 13: Was real early is at four o' hawk, so quite
- 17:04Speaker 13: quite a few hours before evening time.
- 17:07Speaker 10: A couple of dough came out for food.
- 17:09Speaker 2: So we're still kind of pre rut there in South Georgia, right.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Are we looking at or where are we at?
- 17:15Speaker 14: Cauch?
- 17:15Speaker 3: We're post post run, okay, so.
- 17:18Speaker 13: See, and that's that weird part of like the eastern
- 17:21Speaker 13: southern part of Georgia.
- 17:24Speaker 10: And same thing with Florida.
- 17:25Speaker 13: Now, once you get over into that panhandle of Florida
- 17:28Speaker 13: and get up underneath you know, Louisiana and Alabama, that's
- 17:31Speaker 13: where you get the later December pre run.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Gotcha. So what are the bucks doing there right now?
- 17:38Speaker 4: Uh?
- 17:38Speaker 13: And in my area just doing their normal normal bed
- 17:42Speaker 13: of food kind of I've seen them bachelor back up.
- 17:46Speaker 10: So back to the bed to food type deal.
- 17:49Speaker 3: Gotcha? So, uh you got are you running cameras? And
- 17:52Speaker 3: what are that? What's that stuff on?
- 17:55Speaker 6: Uh?
- 17:55Speaker 13: Yeah, right now, I got it's on a lease that
- 17:58Speaker 13: I was honeying up in Georgia. So I got a
- 18:00Speaker 13: couple of cameras on feeders, and I got a couple
- 18:02Speaker 13: of cameras on natural natural movement. The kind of natural
- 18:05Speaker 13: movement cameras have been a little on the slow side, and.
- 18:10Speaker 10: Really the cameras even on the feeders have.
- 18:11Speaker 13: Been a little on the slow side. A lot of nighttime.
- 18:15Speaker 13: I did have I had one buck come through on
- 18:18Speaker 13: that and from moving in.
- 18:19Speaker 10: Daytime, but that was a couple of days, two days
- 18:23Speaker 10: prior to that cold front.
- 18:24Speaker 3: Moving in, Okay. Got you. So if you're.
- 18:29Speaker 2: If you're seeing all that nocturnal stuff, are you then
- 18:33Speaker 2: trying to hold off and just not pressure them or
- 18:36Speaker 2: are you trying to seek out where those bucks are
- 18:37Speaker 2: spending their days?
- 18:39Speaker 13: No, I am, I'm trying to hold off and I'm
- 18:41Speaker 13: trying to just plant it right.
- 18:44Speaker 10: Get some daytime movement, try to slide up in there,
- 18:47Speaker 10: especially this time of the year with.
- 18:49Speaker 6: It being so are not late, but just much later
- 18:52Speaker 6: in the season.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Yeah, got you.
- 18:54Speaker 2: So you still you're thinking that another cold front will
- 18:57Speaker 2: push through and kind of give you some daylight.
- 19:00Speaker 10: I do.
- 19:01Speaker 13: I think that now that we've got a couple of
- 19:05Speaker 13: cold fronts back to back, it seems to be staying
- 19:07Speaker 13: in these cooler temperatures. I think now is when you, Mike,
- 19:12Speaker 13: might catch them in that almost like that early season pattern,
- 19:15Speaker 13: you know, catch them a little bit heading back to
- 19:17Speaker 13: bed earlier, or maybe getting a bite to eat mid
- 19:20Speaker 13: mid morning.
- 19:22Speaker 4: Gotcha.
- 19:23Speaker 5: So do you expect the next week to be better
- 19:25Speaker 5: than the last one or about the same or what
- 19:27Speaker 5: are you thinking?
- 19:29Speaker 13: I would have to say, I want to go with
- 19:31Speaker 13: a little bit of optimism.
- 19:33Speaker 10: I think it might be a submit you better gotcha?
- 19:35Speaker 4: Gotcha.
- 19:36Speaker 5: So in the next week on a scale of one
- 19:39Speaker 5: to ten, what would you rank buck movement?
- 19:43Speaker 13: I'm going to give it a solid five, all right,
- 19:46Speaker 13: right in the middle, right in the middle.
- 19:47Speaker 5: So it's worth going out. I'm trying to shoot a
- 19:49Speaker 5: buck there in South Georgia this time of year. If
- 19:51Speaker 5: you haven't got it done yet, there's there. I appreciate you, man,
- 19:59Speaker 5: thank you for doing this.
- 20:00Speaker 4: Just and we'll talk to you.
- 20:01Speaker 5: I'm sure, you know, like next week or something like that.
- 20:04Speaker 10: Good soil.
- 20:36Speaker 2: I've got my brother Matt die with landing a legacy
- 20:38Speaker 2: on the phone while hunting no less.
- 20:42Speaker 3: He is like in the field right now. What are
- 20:43Speaker 3: you doing? Man?
- 20:45Speaker 9: This is about as live as you can get.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Yeah, from the field in Missouri, hun just giving us
- 20:51Speaker 2: the direct report live.
- 20:53Speaker 3: What are you seeing?
- 20:53Speaker 9: Yes?
- 20:54Speaker 3: Oh man?
- 20:55Speaker 9: What's cool about this little audience?
- 20:58Speaker 14: For me, it's doing a little bit of marking to timber,
- 21:00Speaker 14: but also it's antlerless season. Formaseras are trying to do
- 21:03Speaker 14: a little bit of management and work at the same time.
- 21:05Speaker 14: But honestly, from overall deer standpoint, this is can be
- 21:08Speaker 14: one of my favorite times of the year. This post
- 21:11Speaker 14: rut shift back into food and deer get on really
- 21:16Speaker 14: good patterns.
- 21:17Speaker 9: So hopefully.
- 21:19Speaker 14: Hopefully the deer, the target deer right have made it
- 21:22Speaker 14: through the gun season. For us, we were very fortunate
- 21:25Speaker 14: this year, whether it's just weather outings not that many
- 21:30Speaker 14: deer got harvested in our area. I don't know if
- 21:33Speaker 14: we lost a target deer two like during rifle seasons.
- 21:37Speaker 14: So we are now just readjusting cameras, getting them set
- 21:41Speaker 14: up over that shift of you know, betting closer to
- 21:45Speaker 14: south facing slopes, but also that transition back into food.
- 21:51Speaker 14: Bucks are definitely still checking scrapes. That's definitely active still
- 21:55Speaker 14: on our cameras, but from a standpoint of like, I'm
- 21:59Speaker 14: just prepared for that, if you will, bed food late
- 22:04Speaker 14: season type pattern, and they're starting to really get consistent
- 22:08Speaker 14: on cameras and I like to see.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Them so in those scrapes. Are those bucks actually daylighting
- 22:12Speaker 2: on those.
- 22:13Speaker 9: Scrapes, Yeah, for sure.
- 22:16Speaker 14: And it's been I think that we're seeing the shift
- 22:19Speaker 14: of food quite a bit quicker than we when we
- 22:21Speaker 14: do post rut post gun season this year more than
- 22:26Speaker 14: others because we've had so many like just quick cold spells.
- 22:29Speaker 14: This coming week, we've got temperatures in the low thirties
- 22:32Speaker 14: as highs and some just cool, cool nights, and so
- 22:35Speaker 14: there's there's some evenings where dear in the field at
- 22:39Speaker 14: two two thirty and then bucks are pidding and checking scrapes.
- 22:43Speaker 14: They're still doing their social check in faons are going
- 22:46Speaker 14: to be coming in the heat really anytime now, so
- 22:49Speaker 14: they're still actively checking the scrapes. But where deer are
- 22:53Speaker 14: congregating on food sources and bucks are there and they're
- 22:57Speaker 14: seeming to not have any problem with the right weather conditions.
- 23:01Speaker 14: Of course, being there in daylight.
- 23:04Speaker 5: Is when you talk about food sources, you're talking about
- 23:07Speaker 5: assuming food plots or ag that may be left. And
- 23:11Speaker 5: is there a type of wild food right now available
- 23:15Speaker 5: in there in Missouri that you feel like or is
- 23:16Speaker 5: it going to be pretty much what's been planted?
- 23:20Speaker 14: Great question for me right now, because I have the
- 23:22Speaker 14: ability to manage some places my own or leases is
- 23:27Speaker 14: food plots. But if you don't have that ability, you're
- 23:29Speaker 14: hunting public or you don't have the ability to manage
- 23:31Speaker 14: and have that. Don't forget about clover and pastures that
- 23:36Speaker 14: can green up with some warmer days. I mean, it's
- 23:39Speaker 14: almost gonna be sixty here today, but then we get
- 23:41Speaker 14: that cold snap, so like clover can come in and
- 23:43Speaker 14: out even in December.
- 23:46Speaker 9: But also the biggest, the main one is going to
- 23:49Speaker 9: be red oaks.
- 23:50Speaker 14: Red Oaks late season December are going to still be
- 23:53Speaker 14: on the ground, still very viable and dear if they
- 23:57Speaker 14: don't have those other more preferred resources, they're going to
- 24:00Speaker 14: be hitting those pretty much primarily.
- 24:02Speaker 5: Yeah, we see the same thing here in Texas this
- 24:05Speaker 5: time of year, December and January, we see red oaks
- 24:08Speaker 5: being a big time drawl for hogs and deer both.
- 24:12Speaker 14: Absolutely, There's been many years ago now don't generally hunt
- 24:17Speaker 14: mornings at this time of the year. But there was
- 24:19Speaker 14: a deer on a good pattern. Oh gosh, it's probably
- 24:23Speaker 14: ten years ago now, but it is morning of December eighteenth.
- 24:26Speaker 14: I remember it, but headed back feeding back off of
- 24:30Speaker 14: a food plot early morning, but on a ridge with
- 24:33Speaker 14: a ton of black oaks, which is a red oak family,
- 24:36Speaker 14: and he was there just about every single morning. We
- 24:38Speaker 14: slipped in and killing that deer. But it's a late
- 24:42Speaker 14: season red oak play and we're we're in that window
- 24:46Speaker 14: right now. That's still those three plots, that's where id be.
- 24:49Speaker 2: So when you do get those real frigid temperatures, though,
- 24:52Speaker 2: do you feel like green is the way to go?
- 24:55Speaker 9: I do, unless you have grain.
- 24:58Speaker 14: If you have grain, it's just for for me in
- 25:00Speaker 14: southern Missouri, it's few and far between.
- 25:03Speaker 9: Do you even have grain as an option?
- 25:05Speaker 14: But getting you know, wheat fields cr rye, tricker koe
- 25:09Speaker 14: or your leftover turn up field from your fall food plot,
- 25:13Speaker 14: like those are definitely keen right now in this December
- 25:17Speaker 14: time frame from a planted resource.
- 25:20Speaker 9: I love green during this window.
- 25:23Speaker 3: Yeah, cool dude.
- 25:23Speaker 2: All right, So as we look forward to the next
- 25:25Speaker 2: week with those really cold temperatures and you know, just
- 25:28Speaker 2: kind of that post ud stuff that you're talking about,
- 25:32Speaker 2: are you going to really emphasize hunting in that week?
- 25:36Speaker 2: Is that going to Does it mean were looking at
- 25:37Speaker 2: good stuff here?
- 25:39Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 25:39Speaker 14: Well that's what I see according to my weather down here.
- 25:45Speaker 3: But really I.
- 25:45Speaker 14: Get excited from now. We've run till January fifteenth for Missouri.
- 25:49Speaker 14: So I don't try and just come out of the
- 25:50Speaker 14: gates screaming. I want to pick the right days, the
- 25:53Speaker 14: best days. It doesn't have to be the coldest day either.
- 25:55Speaker 14: It could be a day that is average or even
- 25:58Speaker 14: slightly above average. If you're having cold nights, but it
- 26:01Speaker 14: gets up warm and it's clear, bluebird sky days. I
- 26:05Speaker 14: love the clear, bluebird sky days. Deer seem to feed
- 26:08Speaker 14: early in those fields and soak up as much warmth
- 26:11Speaker 14: as they can. So again, if you get if you're
- 26:14Speaker 14: really cold and you start coming on the back end
- 26:16Speaker 14: of cold mat we've got a wind shift to that
- 26:19Speaker 14: is super preferred.
- 26:21Speaker 9: But yeah, if.
- 26:22Speaker 14: Time allows this week, I probably will slide out and
- 26:25Speaker 14: put eyes on the field.
- 26:26Speaker 3: That's cool, all right.
- 26:27Speaker 2: So on a scale of one to ten in Missouri
- 26:29Speaker 2: over the next week, what are you gonna rank Buck
- 26:30Speaker 2: movement at.
- 26:32Speaker 9: Buck Movement Evenings. I'm gonna go with the six seven.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Pretty good, man, That is really good, especially pop post Rode.
- 26:39Speaker 3: I like it.
- 26:40Speaker 14: If you've got yeah, unpressured stuff deer, there's no reason
- 26:44Speaker 14: for deer to not move and feed in daylight this week.
- 26:48Speaker 3: Awesome, dude, appreciate the report. Man, Hey, you bet guys.
- 26:52Speaker 3: I've got Troy Waldron on the phone.
- 26:54Speaker 2: He's a dedicated Texas hunter and quite honestly, he has
- 26:57Speaker 2: just killed one of the biggest bucks I've ever seen
- 27:00Speaker 2: come from Texas.
- 27:01Speaker 3: Troy, what's happening, dude?
- 27:03Speaker 11: Oh, not much, man, just trying to catch up on
- 27:06Speaker 11: some work after being out hunted for a little while.
- 27:08Speaker 3: I understand that for sure, man, So congrats on the
- 27:12Speaker 3: big buck.
- 27:12Speaker 2: I want to know what the deer are doing and
- 27:14Speaker 2: what you figured out to be able to kill a
- 27:16Speaker 2: deer like that.
- 27:16Speaker 3: What the deer doing in Texas right now?
- 27:18Speaker 8: Yeah? Sure, so I think they're still looking for dose.
- 27:23Speaker 11: So you know, you got a lot of the breeding
- 27:26Speaker 11: is over, but you still have some of those that
- 27:28Speaker 11: haven't been bred. The fawns from the spring are going
- 27:30Speaker 11: to be coming in soon, and I think those bucks
- 27:33Speaker 11: are still definitely searching.
- 27:37Speaker 8: I mean they this weekend and just this beer came
- 27:39Speaker 8: into rattling.
- 27:40Speaker 11: I was doing a lot of rattling and grunning sequences,
- 27:44Speaker 11: So I think they're still chasing some of those.
- 27:47Speaker 3: Gotcha. That's that's kind of interesting.
- 27:49Speaker 2: You know, it almost seems like everybody gets depressed because
- 27:52Speaker 2: November is over, but in Texas it seems like, especially
- 27:55Speaker 2: a large portion of state, there's kind of like a
- 27:56Speaker 2: trickle rut. Do you see that action to last throughout
- 27:59Speaker 2: December one hundred percent?
- 28:01Speaker 11: So I actually struggle more in November in certain respects Now,
- 28:06Speaker 11: I missed the big one early November this year, just
- 28:08Speaker 11: clean miss and I actually hit two other bucks and
- 28:10Speaker 11: didn't find them. So that's a whole nother story. Maybe
- 28:13Speaker 11: my shooting was off, but so I had encounters in November.
- 28:17Speaker 11: Don't get me wrong, but I in the last three
- 28:19Speaker 11: or four years as.
- 28:19Speaker 8: Far as bucks on the wall, I'm having a lot
- 28:22Speaker 8: of success in December, and it's red activity.
- 28:24Speaker 11: I mean, it would be different than what you would
- 28:27Speaker 11: in your mind think you're supposed to be seeing in November?
- 28:30Speaker 4: What have you?
- 28:30Speaker 3: So, is there any strategy to like your rattling sequence?
- 28:34Speaker 2: You know, are you are you trying to just break
- 28:36Speaker 2: the antlers or is there something like any rhyme or
- 28:39Speaker 2: reason to the way you you do take them together?
- 28:42Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 28:42Speaker 8: So usually I don't rattle. I'm more of a grunt
- 28:44Speaker 8: suit guy.
- 28:45Speaker 11: Even when I do that, I try to mimic what
- 28:47Speaker 11: I hear them do in the woods, which is like,
- 28:50Speaker 11: you know, yeah, why not too aggressive, nothing real long
- 28:54Speaker 11: and exaggerated. But on this trip, because I don't hunt
- 28:57Speaker 11: this area, you know, very often, I wasn't sure if
- 29:00Speaker 11: they would or they wouldn't respond to rattling, So I
- 29:02Speaker 11: brought the ones out.
- 29:03Speaker 4: There and just light you know.
- 29:06Speaker 11: Again, I watched a thousand videos of hunting, right, so
- 29:09Speaker 11: I'm just trying to mimic what I see if a deer,
- 29:11Speaker 11: you know, is on video, you know, fighting and so
- 29:14Speaker 11: nothing too crazy loud, but nothing too long. But I
- 29:18Speaker 11: also try to break it up a little bit because
- 29:20Speaker 11: they're not just like constantly for a minute straight, you know,
- 29:23Speaker 11: tickle and tickle and tickling, like there's breaks and stuff
- 29:25Speaker 11: in there. So I just tried to kind of mimic
- 29:27Speaker 11: that a little bit.
- 29:28Speaker 5: And all of those thousand videos, would you say, probably
- 29:31Speaker 5: five hundred of them or element videos or I mean absolutely.
- 29:37Speaker 4: Doubt so.
- 29:38Speaker 5: Were you in like a in like what you consider
- 29:41Speaker 5: a rut funnel hunting this deer or what were you
- 29:43Speaker 5: doing exactly?
- 29:45Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 29:45Speaker 11: So probably but mostly edge right, So this area before
- 29:50Speaker 11: the haunt, I actually got boosted on the ground twice,
- 29:52Speaker 11: but obviously did a kind of scouting on.
- 29:54Speaker 8: Google before I got in there.
- 29:56Speaker 11: First thing keen on was the creek creek systems. Any
- 30:00Speaker 11: time there's a creek runningto timber, that's going to be
- 30:02Speaker 11: a go to. It's going to be creating funnels naturally.
- 30:05Speaker 11: On top of that, there was a field that I
- 30:07Speaker 11: didn't know what was in there, but the field jetted
- 30:09Speaker 11: into the timber, and then there was different habitat lines
- 30:12Speaker 11: within the timber and at all if you were to
- 30:14Speaker 11: take a pencil and follow those lines, there was a
- 30:17Speaker 11: spot where a lot of those lines crossed or were
- 30:19Speaker 11: pretty close to And when I went into Scott, I said,
- 30:23Speaker 11: I guarantee that those spots going to have a bunch
- 30:25Speaker 11: of scrapes of it, which was just on the edge
- 30:27Speaker 11: of that field and I also wanted to see what
- 30:29Speaker 11: was in the field. There is there hay in there
- 30:31Speaker 11: is then your ride coming up?
- 30:32Speaker 4: Or is it brush?
- 30:33Speaker 8: Is it you know, switch grass? What is it? And
- 30:35Speaker 8: it ended up just being a bunch of like just
- 30:37Speaker 8: a big.
- 30:38Speaker 11: Ticket like saplings, really really thick.
- 30:41Speaker 8: So I said, well, either going to you can.
- 30:43Speaker 11: Use it as betting, or it's just going to at
- 30:46Speaker 11: least create travel. So all in all, though you came
- 30:50Speaker 11: to your question, it was it was a funnel area,
- 30:52Speaker 11: but just.
- 30:52Speaker 8: Those lines all met in this one spot, and I knew.
- 30:56Speaker 11: If I got in there and there was a spot
- 30:57Speaker 11: to set up, my entry and exit was going to
- 31:00Speaker 11: be really good too, based on the wind. So it
- 31:01Speaker 11: was an east wind Friday and then pretty much the
- 31:04Speaker 11: south the rest of the weekend, and I was coming
- 31:06Speaker 11: in from the northwest.
- 31:09Speaker 8: Gotcha, So I've given up that side, but everything else
- 31:11Speaker 8: was good.
- 31:12Speaker 4: Uh huh.
- 31:12Speaker 5: So do you think that in the next week or
- 31:15Speaker 5: so you would you would stay with that same general
- 31:18Speaker 5: idea of you know, hunting scrapes where a lot of
- 31:22Speaker 5: different lines are intersecting, transition lines are intersecting, and also
- 31:26Speaker 5: with the idea that you're going to be seeing running
- 31:28Speaker 5: movement in the next week.
- 31:30Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean the scrapes were there, and that was good.
- 31:33Speaker 11: I wasn't expecting to shoot something coming through the scrape,
- 31:36Speaker 11: but having those scrapes there usually tells me it's a.
- 31:38Speaker 8: Deer movement area, like there's going to be deer here.
- 31:41Speaker 8: And really, I guess my mindset was more like, even if.
- 31:44Speaker 11: This is the means there's a bunch of doze in here,
- 31:46Speaker 11: that's where I want to be because there's those here,
- 31:49Speaker 11: Those bucks are going to be here. So if I
- 31:51Speaker 11: were going to keep hunting this week, I wouldn't so
- 31:53Speaker 11: much key on scrapes per se and the fact that
- 31:55Speaker 11: you're going to shoot one of the scrape, but I'd
- 31:58Speaker 11: be near the dos.
- 32:00Speaker 2: Can't hardly beat that. Man, It's hell. That is definitely
- 32:04Speaker 2: an understatement.
- 32:05Speaker 3: You gotta be with it. Where the doose are, you're
- 32:06Speaker 3: gonna find the buck.
- 32:07Speaker 2: So on a scale of one to ten, if you're
- 32:09Speaker 2: gonna rank buck movement in Texas for the next week,
- 32:13Speaker 2: what would you call it?
- 32:14Speaker 6: Seven?
- 32:15Speaker 3: Seven? That's pretty good hunting, not.
- 32:18Speaker 11: Too unoptimistic, not too over optimistic, just right there.
- 32:22Speaker 3: I like it. Brother, appreciate the report, dude, have a
- 32:24Speaker 3: good rest of your season.
- 32:25Speaker 8: Yeah, you guys, see, I appreciate it as you hear.
- 32:28Speaker 2: There are still some good places to get in the
- 32:31Speaker 2: woods of the prairies or wherever you might be, even
- 32:33Speaker 2: the swamps half deering them out there, right, and so
- 32:39Speaker 2: it can be particular, but December is still a great
- 32:41Speaker 2: time to kill a really big buck, maybe even one
- 32:44Speaker 2: that's in the rut, if you're in the right place. Uh,
- 32:47Speaker 2: And if you need a little inspiration or a little
- 32:49Speaker 2: bit of thought about how maybe you should do that, Actually,
- 32:52Speaker 2: Mark Kenyon Mark himself had a guy named Dylan Lenz
- 32:56Speaker 2: on the podcast the other day from Big Wood Scouting.
- 32:59Speaker 2: A lot of the country is covered in what you
- 33:02Speaker 2: might call big woods, and I know that a lot
- 33:04Speaker 2: of those places that have later ruts tend to be
- 33:08Speaker 2: what you might call the big woods. So it's a
- 33:10Speaker 2: pretty good podcast to go check out if you are
- 33:13Speaker 2: in that boat.
- 33:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 33:15Speaker 5: So there's also another really cool video that we put
- 33:18Speaker 5: out this week.
- 33:19Speaker 4: We have been on the road like crazy. We are running.
- 33:24Speaker 5: Everybody is either filming or editing a little bit or hunting,
- 33:29Speaker 5: and so it's been crazy. We haven't been able to
- 33:30Speaker 5: get a ton of editing done actually, but we did
- 33:33Speaker 5: get a video out because I thought there would be
- 33:35Speaker 5: some people that would be interested in seeing this big
- 33:38Speaker 5: old giant mondo buck that I ran into when I
- 33:42Speaker 5: was stalking a different big old giant mondo buck that
- 33:45Speaker 5: might actually be the one you killed.
- 33:46Speaker 3: Oh man.
- 33:47Speaker 2: I think it just where we might be, which is crazy.
- 33:51Speaker 2: We were juking and jiving out there on the planes
- 33:55Speaker 2: after these deers. So we're gonna link to both of
- 33:57Speaker 2: those and the description below if you need a little inspirational,
- 34:01Speaker 2: little motivation, a little.
- 34:03Speaker 3: Bit of just uh, you know.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm trying to think about more rhymes than I
- 34:09Speaker 2: can't even do right now because I'm so excited to go.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Dearhune after listen to all these good reports, this has
- 34:13Speaker 2: been rough. Fresh, Keep it fresh,
