- 1:20we back at the lab we are back at the lab back at the lab.
- 1:23Yeah, man, we've been rocking and rolling for years now.
- 1:27For years, bro. I know, what, 2014, 15-ish?
- 1:30Just about. Yeah, we got a tenure in this.
- 1:34We've been here for a minute. I remember the first time, I went to a touch of class,
- 1:39first time or whatever, first time I did, you put it back up there or whatever,
- 1:42you was real chill, real cool with me, and then I ran into you.
- 1:46Maybe a couple weeks after that, I went up at one of those bars up at Citrus
- 1:49Heights or whatever, stuff like that, I showed you the photo of us at the Touch
- 1:53of Classy. He's like, you know what, bro?
- 1:55You're part of the brotherhood now. You're part of the brotherhood now. You're at the same,
- 2:00it's been a wild ride ever since yeah man we've been
- 2:02pushing the line we've been do remember we was working at tommy
- 2:06t's when they had tommy t's and rancho yeah they
- 2:09had me as the house host and putting shows together i always
- 2:12try to reach back to my folks yes sir
- 2:15right before before they put up that big old the the mural or
- 2:18whatever we have that was before tomorrow and it was just a black
- 2:21wall so we are
- 2:24in brand new year man 2025 yeah
- 2:29before we get rolling into you know what we got coming up for
- 2:31this next year let's kind of do like a recap about how
- 2:34our 2024 was and stuff like that i know it's not january started
- 2:38off pretty hot especially for comedians yes because we
- 2:41all know about the infamous cat williams yeah yeah
- 2:44yeah january wow i
- 2:48wasn't even thinking about that how january started
- 2:51off it started off from that december 2023 we
- 2:56was all auditioning for the west coast comedy jam you know what i mean and it
- 3:03was the west coast comedy jam and we was all doing auditioning and then in january
- 3:08that's when they called and selected the comedians they were going to have do
- 3:13the West Coast Comedy Jam.
- 3:16And I did an audition and I did my motherfucking thing.
- 3:20Nice, nice. So what was the, I saw a lot of, I saw a comedians post about it
- 3:24and stuff like that. What was the West Coast Comedy Jam?
- 3:27The West Coast Comedy Jam, there was a pirate that they were shooting.
- 3:31It was all the comics from the West Coast or that now live in the West Coast.
- 3:36So they didn't just want to have LA comics. They came up and did auditions at Tommy T's.
- 3:42They did them in Sacramento and they selected a few of Northern California comedians.
- 3:49And I was one of them. Nice. Was that, was that scruncher that put that on?
- 3:53Well, scruncher was the host. It was.
- 3:57Hey, but he used to do a lot of business with ice cube and he's a big part of West coast. Okay.
- 4:04Music and stuff like that. His name was lay law. It was his production,
- 4:08but he got with a lot of people that carried it out for him.
- 4:13Will Squancho and a bunch of others. Okay.
- 4:17So how did the West Coast Comedy Jam go? That was down in LA,
- 4:20right? That was down in LA.
- 4:22Yeah, it was good. It was my first time shooting something like that.
- 4:27They made me sign NDAs, so I can't tell you that.
- 4:30I didn't do too much about it, but I can talk about the experience.
- 4:34I was the first comic on the first episode of the first season mm-hmm,
- 4:41So I came out, and when I'm telling you, I came out just knocking it out the park.
- 4:47I was ready for it. I prayed for it. I practiced and everything.
- 4:52So, yeah, it ended up being dope. I was proud of myself for what I did.
- 4:57And I'm telling you, Northern California was really representing.
- 5:01I'm talking about me, the Ricos, the Jay Riches, the Marios,
- 5:06the Shea Sugars, the Lance Woods.
- 5:09Oh d tyler murdered it
- 5:12d tyler murdered it in in a fashion that was just unbelievable he tired murdered
- 5:20it if they were on different shows and it was like after i murdered it on the
- 5:25first show it was a few that didn't murder it as much yeah.
- 5:32All your comedians no no i'm talking about the
- 5:35other comedians okay so but it was i mean it was
- 5:38some dope ones there that was there for the night i
- 5:40stayed there it was we ran it for about four
- 5:43or five days i only stayed down there for like two
- 5:46or three days so it was some new comics
- 5:49that i they're not new in their
- 5:52craft they're new to me okay it was some people that was knocking it out the
- 5:56park and it was some people not so much they just had a really good audition
- 6:00but we were kept talking for like to with the bright lights of the bright lights
- 6:04is different yeah it changed the game
- 6:05but yeah we it was dope i enjoyed it that's that put me on a run where,
- 6:11all i care about is recording content and i ain't gotta wait for no cable channel
- 6:17i ain't gotta wait for no big platform for me to record myself so that's what
- 6:22we shot that early february the
- 6:25beginning of February. So that was dope.
- 6:28And so with that did that kind of kind of take build up the momentum for you
- 6:34to take it to like the rest because the rest of 2020 because i kind of consider
- 6:37you like uh out here at sacramento,
- 6:40it's kind of like the people's champ last year you know what i'm saying you know say if you say,
- 6:44you was a comedian's favorite comedian yeah um switch to style rap it's a lot
- 6:51of people in my coming up you got to understand the same time i was meeting
- 6:55you I was meeting the Jay Riches,
- 6:59the Mario Hodges, the Lance Woods.
- 7:03I was meeting a lot of these people.
- 7:06Now that they're in position, they remember me and they put me in position.
- 7:12You know, me and Mario went to Texas.
- 7:14Me and Lance did things, you know. So whenever comics, they kick down the door,
- 7:21they say, man, y'all just haven't seen Tristan Johnson. and he could do a church.
- 7:25Sometimes they don't want to do churches and they send me.
- 7:28And then, so I do, I'm a comics comic.
- 7:33I mean, most of my career just come from the love that other comics have for me.
- 7:38And that's probably by the way that I conduct myself.
- 7:42And yeah, so yeah, I was getting a lot of lead from comics and I wasn't letting them down.
- 7:48But you also do more for the comedy community besides just like providing jokes and stuff like that.
- 7:54Because you literally have your own studio set up in your garage and stuff like that.
- 7:58And, yeah, I try to just have this one thing to tell a comic they're not promoting
- 8:02enough or they're not pushing their career enough without giving them the tools.
- 8:07So whenever a new comic or somebody, you know, they got to show us,
- 8:12they come to my house and we can shoot the commercial on green screen.
- 8:16We got it. We got it. If you're not famous, we got to show the audience who you are.
- 8:22Yeah, yeah, yeah. so i always try to tell comedians like
- 8:25this is a private owned business it's like i got
- 8:27a coffee shop and you've got a coffee shop yeah yeah sometimes there's
- 8:31two coffee shops in one parking lot yeah we ain't got to kill each other yeah
- 8:34so if there's another comic i tell them you know push yours the way i push mine
- 8:39because like you said i'm the people's chance if you booking enough comics i
- 8:44might end up being one of those comics before the year is over and if i got 52 of you.
- 8:50Now i'm making a living yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
- 8:53yeah yeah yeah yeah now you're doing something every weekend now i'm doing something
- 8:56every weekend comics don't get the understanding of that is that all you got
- 9:00to do is make a good 52 relationships and you might not want to work 52 weeks
- 9:05or a year so you make those relationships and push your craft and handle it with integrity,
- 9:12you would be a good journeyman comedian yeah
- 9:15the same part you know that would come with a certain level
- 9:18of momentum that comes a certain level of
- 9:21momentum that just comes with put it in the work and
- 9:24then also just chance you know how's that it's really just chance you know
- 9:27it's chancing is good when you get that
- 9:30chance to be a actual professional
- 9:33comedian i'm a professional so
- 9:36that means i'm a professional public speaker
- 9:39i have done things that wasn't even
- 9:42in comedy settings i had to host a graduation a
- 9:46college graduation for the black the
- 9:50black union and solano yeah yeah yeah and it's like i didn't graduate from college
- 9:55but graduating brothers and telling them what they're gonna do with their future
- 9:59and all that stuff just because i speak well and i could make a room feel good
- 10:04so i have done i'm doing a memorial another funeral it's called a going-home celebration.
- 10:10I have done at least a dozen of those in my career. So it's comedy,
- 10:16but it's also just public speaking.
- 10:18It's also really just being able to relate to people.
- 10:22Being able to relate to whatever it is they're going through.
- 10:26And with comedians, that's the rare thing that we're able to do.
- 10:31Is be able to connect with somebody.
- 10:34On an emotional mental level and stuff like
- 10:36that without really just making them feel uncomfortable about
- 10:40themselves and things like that because laughing is you don't
- 10:43have to think about laughing right it's just something that just comes natural
- 10:45you're like oh wow that that made me feel something yeah well like doing comedy
- 10:50is like it's almost like dressing you might have a lot of clothes but if you
- 10:56about to go visit your mom in the hospital are you gonna wear all your nice,
- 11:01liverache clothes are you gonna wear something decent you
- 11:05know what i mean where you're not putting attention on you so
- 11:08much yeah and that's the same thing with comedy is
- 11:11what you know you might have a joke about a gag ball but is this the setting
- 11:15is this the setting for yeah yeah we're at church for that so yeah yeah we're
- 11:19we're at a church we're at a job fair we're at a we're raising money for little
- 11:24league your best if that's your best joke then you have closed the door on those.
- 11:29Lots of, yeah. Now, I got all the nasty jokes.
- 11:33Too Short, one of my favorite rappers. I got all the nasty jokes,
- 11:37and there is a lot of people making a lot of money off those nasty jokes, but go there with it.
- 11:43Yeah, go there with it, yeah. You know, me, I just want to be able to speak anywhere.
- 11:49Black, well, I did a Mexican church, some Victory Outreach churches.
- 11:53I didn't did the You buy a little now? No, no.
- 11:57You're from California. you might as well be you might as
- 12:00well be you know talking about Hayward is
- 12:03almost the same as talking about Oakland you know is it's it's the same thing
- 12:07so when I go down there and I'm dealing with Gilroy and all those people down
- 12:12there it's like we relate and then I'm one of those people I could really get
- 12:18down with a culture I'm not one of those people that's,
- 12:22It separates myself. Like, if I don't rock with you, I don't need to be telling jokes to you.
- 12:28Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I could
- 12:30tell some people come to black rooms and they're scared of black people.
- 12:34And fear is the biggest form of racism.
- 12:37You know what I mean? When I do jokes in front of white people,
- 12:41I'm not scared of them. When I tell jokes in front of Mexicans, I'm not scared of them.
- 12:46And they could feel like we're brothers. I'm one of them.
- 12:49You know what I mean? And so I'm able to talk to a lot of those people, even gay people.
- 12:56I don't, I don't have a natural hate or disdain or frustration towards same sex relationship.
- 13:05So if I tell them a joke, they could feel that I'm not making fun of them.
- 13:10I'm not tearing them down.
- 13:11I don't have those. I naturally just don't have those views.
- 13:15It's just, that's what they're doing.
- 13:16You know what I'm saying? You're more of like, everybody's a target or like,
- 13:20nobody's a target type of thing.
- 13:23It's, I don't feel like my jokes target people. I feel like everybody's a human.
- 13:28Yeah. If I can't, if I can't make fun of a special needs person,
- 13:33if I can't make fun of a blind person,
- 13:36if I can't make fun of a gay person, if I can't make fun of a church person
- 13:40or somebody that think they so gangster or somebody that think they so self-righteous,
- 13:45everything, Everything comes with balance.
- 13:48You can make fun of, when I go to churches, I make fun of pastors.
- 13:54I make fun of the old ladies at churches because that's where they need to be.
- 13:59But it's some jokes in there. Mm-hmm.
- 14:02If you feel like you got to target people and you really got to displace a certain
- 14:07level of hate in your comedy, comedy is a form of therapy.
- 14:11So if all your jokes is about gay bashing, maybe, maybe wrestling with something.
- 14:16Yeah, you're fighting something.
- 14:17There's some type of inner struggle
- 14:19there. You get it. It's the inner struggle. You get what I'm saying?
- 14:22It's people that chew tobacco.
- 14:25When I think of gay people, it's like me thinking of people that chew tobacco.
- 14:28Oh, that's what they do with tobacco.
- 14:33My people split the blunt and pulled the tobacco out yeah y'all just put the
- 14:38tobacco out yeah we spoke yeah it's not that I hate them I think they're disgusting
- 14:42it's still tobacco they just take it they got cultured into that you know what
- 14:46I mean I still have a great,
- 14:50appreciation for the opposite sex you know what I'm saying that's the only difference
- 14:55you know what I mean and I like it the bigger the better so not mad at that
- 15:00not mad at that at all So now we got to talk about the comedy and that good jazz.
- 15:07What are you got coming up for 2025?
- 15:122025, I am writing to make my comedy special extremely cohesive because this
- 15:20is what I want my kids and my grandkids to show the world.
- 15:25I'm going to spend a year getting it right.
- 15:29I might do a taping on my birthday in 2026, but I'm spending this year making
- 15:39sure that these jokes are funny in all 50 states.
- 15:44So I'm trying to headline at least two states, two or three or four states every month.
- 15:53And I got those connections. I got those relationships.
- 15:57So that's what I'm doing. So when the special do come out It's like I know this
- 16:04ain't just East Oakland funny I know this just ain't Sacramento funny This is
- 16:08our main part This is Massachusetts,
- 16:10Texas Yeah, this got back from Boston That was dope That's the home of new addition,
- 16:18I'm telling you I treated Boston like it was at home Those are real black people
- 16:24Baltimore Shout out to Shad at Battle 2.
- 16:29I went out to Baltimore and I was about to cut you off.
- 16:31I was like, yeah, there is black folks up in this motherfucker. Yeah.
- 16:35Every single kind of black folks you would see. Right. And in California, you can hit a wall.
- 16:42Sometimes you see, especially in Northern California, sometimes the ones that
- 16:46break out and get those relationships with Punchline and these comedy clubs.
- 16:53Is super white friendly joke comedy comedians
- 16:57and i realized like oh
- 17:00i just haven't traveled enough my people are
- 17:03in boston my people are in baltimore my people are
- 17:06in chicago my people are in cincinnati charlotte norfolk
- 17:10yeah you know and that's where i was like oh tristan
- 17:13you keep on trying to chase master's house
- 17:17but you're you telling it out there in the yard you know
- 17:20that's where i mean hey this year
- 17:24i'm not chasing comedy clubs yeah you know
- 17:26what i mean i have a great relationship with raps
- 17:29unlimited that's my home room and that's
- 17:32where i started from and they always they had
- 17:35me performing there when i had a mouthful of gold teeth and i had braids yeah
- 17:41i was really hoodie two shoes that was you know i was doing my thing they supported
- 17:47me so that's going to always be my homeroom and they really support what I do
- 17:52they let me name my shows there's no people.
- 17:56I'll be able to lift up my people like even this time I'm about to do Martin
- 18:01Luther King's real birthday,
- 18:03January 15th at Laughs Unlimited so I salute Laughs Unlimited for always supporting
- 18:09me and so like you said we're bringing the fire up right now so you set up,
- 18:14January 15th. January 15th. That laughs are limited. That laughs are limited.
- 18:19Yes. Tristan Johnson, 7 p.m.
- 18:22Showtime. Oh, you got Coretta Kissing Martin for showtime. Yes.
- 18:25I had a controversy about that. I had another fryer. It showed Martin getting arrested.
- 18:33Somebody called me and it was like, man, some people could find that offensive.
- 18:38But I salute Martin. I think the way that they discuss Martin to us they only
- 18:44try to show the soft side of Martin.
- 18:47Even if you're pushing peace, you know you're pushing peace up against water
- 18:52hoses and dogs. You gotta be something.
- 18:55We've had some aggression to us.
- 18:57And it's two type of people that looks at Martin Luther King's dream,
- 19:01who remembers Martin Luther King's dream or Martin Luther King's murder.
- 19:06Yeah. Yeah. You do not teach nobody peace by getting murdered.
- 19:11Look, look, you can tell us all that good.
- 19:18Sir, if we're nice like Martin, we still end up on that balcony.
- 19:23That didn't teach us peace. It taught us forgiveness.
- 19:28It taught us grace. It taught us being strong in different ways, but Martin wasn't soft.
- 19:35And I'm not going to believe that Martin Luther King was soft I believe he Saw
- 19:41something wrong He's Dr.
- 19:43Martin Luther King So we're talking about an educated man Who could have went
- 19:47and spent his time Getting a good job or doing something else Even at that time
- 19:51Education is still an education And if he could rally that many people Martin
- 19:56Luther King could have made some money,
- 19:58Outside of getting Water hosed and chased with dogs So I don't see Martin Luther
- 20:04King As a weak person And I won't even remember him as a weak person Nobody
- 20:09should man Nobody should remember as a weak person Yeah so yeah,
- 20:14so we got the show cut up january 15th january 15th with the king show what
- 20:18comedians can we expect to see on this show oh you can see the ever so smooth
- 20:24big sass big sash quick sass.
- 20:35Because it's short for sasquash yeah he's probably gonna be the the biggest
- 20:41comedian you have ever seen.
- 20:43Yeah. And he even lost 100 pounds and he's still the biggest comedian.
- 20:46Yeah, yeah. You know, and he's the smoothest brother. Talented.
- 20:49Me and him just got back from Boston. It's big sass. And then I also had to put the Oakland legend.
- 20:56Cinderella. Cinderella. Shout out to Cinderella. Yeah, Cinderella.
- 21:00She came up with Linnell and them.
- 21:02Sometimes I just hang around Cinderella so she could tell me about how comedy was in the 90s.
- 21:08She know all the locations of Tommy T's. She was like, Tommy T's was in San
- 21:13Leandro, then they went to Concord, and then they went here,
- 21:17and then they went there.
- 21:19So I'm like, talking to Sin, I'll be like, dang.
- 21:22She was us. She was doing what we're doing in the 90s.
- 21:27Man, I'll get back to you talking about the new lineup, but what did I say?
- 21:30Especially with Sin, and then just the comedy game in general,
- 21:33it's one of the few things where different generations of comedians still come up and collect.
- 21:40You can still like talk to a sin and you
- 21:43know a show with sin you will be do a show with uh
- 21:46colonists you know and all this type of stuff
- 21:49to where i don't think you really get that with maybe other forms of like art
- 21:54where you just have different generations of whatever that art is and they could
- 21:58be able to just collaborate give advice and people don't understand being a
- 22:05comic it's a it's a special type of fraternity.
- 22:08You get what I'm saying? I have done comedians' funerals,
- 22:13i've seen comedians in the hospital sometimes they left
- 22:16sometimes they didn't i i've i
- 22:19had lance wood to do my wedding when i
- 22:22got married i he got ordained became a preacher and it was everything you wanted
- 22:27and did this for my wedding dope you know what i mean and he married me and
- 22:31my wife and stuff like that we was roommates we just lost we just lost a beer
- 22:37man yeah and i'm talking about a leader in our gang.
- 22:41That was like fossil falling. That was all my way.
- 22:48It came out of nowhere. Do you know to talk to people, I had to lie and say
- 22:54I had an extra close relationship.
- 22:56Oh yeah, Kabir is good and he would vouch for it.
- 23:03And that would get you work. Just being close to him. And then I actually,
- 23:09during the pandemic, working with Jeremy Curry, I was actually able to work
- 23:14and link up with him and stuff like that.
- 23:16But me and him did Bury Your Black 2013 together. We both events.
- 23:24So, you know, that dude was a special dude. But us comics, we'd be so close.
- 23:29Sometimes our families don't know us as well as another comedian.
- 23:33You know when when they when this all said and done
- 23:36and uh they were able to do a viral pick on my life it's got to be written by
- 23:40another comedian because it's not being directed by a comedian yeah but yeah
- 23:44i mean gonna know what i'm doing my brothers ain't gonna my children might not
- 23:49know what i'm doing you know what i mean it's this is what we're doing what
- 23:54would the trissy biopic be called,
- 23:57$35 a show. $35 a show. $35 a show.
- 24:02I don't know how inflation might end up being a lot of money. It might be, yeah.
- 24:08I don't understand that. Man,
- 24:10to make some money in this, I have to do 10 shows to pay a car note. Yeah.
- 24:21You know what I mean? You have $35 a show.
- 24:25That'll let you know the grind. When I got a manager and an agent who used to
- 24:30bet hoods, they was like, Tristan, you can't just be doing $200,
- 24:34$300 shows no more because, you know.
- 24:39People are not going to want to pay you more than that.
- 24:41But it's like, if I don't do the shows, I won't be as good as a person that they're paying for.
- 24:47I mean, even if I go out there just to practice, like, you rather me go to open
- 24:51mic? Is that what I'm saying?
- 24:52I literally got to take this out. out but there was
- 24:55like you don't want to oversaturate yourself and then
- 24:58like you said i'm a comics comic i can't see
- 25:01me throwing the book at another comic on the way up you
- 25:05get what i'm saying so we just got to
- 25:07find ways to get to the bag i'd rather
- 25:10help us both make some money and that's
- 25:14why i'm happy you invest in your setup and you got your
- 25:17own podcast so we winning now you
- 25:20know what i mean oh something happened big
- 25:23for me in the next couple of months that they go
- 25:26and flood this podcast and be like
- 25:29oh that's the real tris yeah you know what i mean so that's that's kind of how
- 25:34kendrick did it when his first album came out people went back and bought the
- 25:38old album yeah they went back they listened all that yeah they went and bought
- 25:41section 80 once you know and then they went back they was listening to the the
- 25:45drake beef all that type of stuff then they went back and listened to homies.
- 25:47I'm like, oh, Drake should have known. I went back and listened to all his old stuff.
- 25:51Mr. Morale, Good Kid, Mad City, Damn, whatever it may be. I'm like, I hate...
- 25:58Y'all should have known a long time ago that kids are going to fuck up anybody
- 26:01that you try to battle with. But I'm definitely the people's champ, the comic's comic.
- 26:07I want everybody to win.
- 26:09And that's something that you're aware about, like that title,
- 26:12that you are the people's champ, that this comedian is
- 26:15somebody that not only that you can look up to, but also somebody that's going
- 26:18to be giving them good advice, but then not also give them good advice,
- 26:21but also help them come up with the recording of the commercials,
- 26:25getting them stage time.
- 26:26How do you carry that that that that that weight i always remember that that's who i am.
- 26:34I can remember ellis showing me how
- 26:37to write jokes i remember doughboy showing me how to write jokes doughboy from
- 26:42well and out i bt kingsley probably taught me things that i still use to this
- 26:48day some of my tags from my jokes come from comics that ain't even doing comedy
- 26:53no more But they was like, hey, Trish, you can add this to that.
- 26:56Even me buying my camera, when I'm capturing my content, that came from Nick
- 27:01Larson, told me what to buy.
- 27:03The dude with the backyard shows, like every comic helped me be the Trishy that I am today.
- 27:09I'm really built by comedians because before comedy, I didn't have these type of comedian friends.
- 27:15You know what I mean? I'm from a whole different world.
- 27:18So I'm definitely built by comedians. when I first started with Laughs Unlimited,
- 27:24I won a comedy competition going up against N. St.
- 27:27Wayne and he's the first person that ever paid me to do comedy in my life.
- 27:32You know what I mean? But when I got in with Laughs Unlimited,
- 27:36I was never a feature. They made me, I was never a host. They were straight
- 27:42to featuring? I was straight to featuring.
- 27:44And she, for the first four times she ever booked me for a weekend,
- 27:49she said I couldn't cuss.
- 27:51But you didn't, though. She said I couldn't cuss.
- 27:55And I got used to not cussing. And now that's where 90% of my money comes from, not cussing.
- 28:02Yeah, doing these church shows and stuff like that. Right. So it's like she
- 28:06and she was like, yeah, you was mad because you had some good jokes about eating ass.
- 28:12So all that little crazy stuff you wanted to talk about.
- 28:17But look at me now. I just did a law firm last Friday.
- 28:22I did a law firm. I did a I did a fundraiser with Gary Payton.
- 28:28And then a church saw me there and told me to come that Sunday morning right now streaming.
- 28:32I'm on two different churches websites
- 28:35right now me doing comedy in their church on Sunday morning not a special thing
- 28:41like I'm a part of church now yeah and it started from somebody saying Trish
- 28:47do this don't be hard-headed you know what I mean yeah and so I'm definitely built by,
- 28:55comedians okay so since we are talking about you know you being built by comedians
- 28:59and all that type of stuff.
- 29:00There is a part of the show is what we do. We like to call it the Mount Rushmore.
- 29:09Okay, cool. So, yeah, so the Mount Rushmore, for anybody that doesn't know,
- 29:12it's just basically a game where we play with a guest.
- 29:14They give the top four, since you're a comedian, we're going to give you your
- 29:18top four comedians, and they just tell us why. Okay.
- 29:24I know this is taboo, everybody say it, but it's definitely Richard Pryor. Okay.
- 29:29My dad and them talk like Richard Pryor. I mean, that's how black men talked when I was being raised.
- 29:39So, Richard Pryor is a voice that just, you know, when I hear his voice,
- 29:46I hear my point parents, I hear my uncles, I hear the OGs around the corner, you know.
- 29:52So, Richard Pryor definitely pretty much taught me how to be everything that I am. Yeah.
- 29:59And I say after that, I would put Cat Williams.
- 30:05Yeah. Okay. Cat Williams was talking how I was talking once I became an adult.
- 30:12You know what I mean? I've never seen people talk like that.
- 30:16You know, talk about issues, talk about things that just pertain to us in a
- 30:21high-quality, high-intelligent fashion.
- 30:25You know what I mean? It's like he was the comic I could relate to the most.
- 30:31And once I saw Cat Williams I was like I can't be another person I have to be
- 30:39that person that's who I am.
- 30:43That's two I would have to put I would have to put Dave Chappelle up there put
- 30:50Dave Chappelle up there you know what I mean the level of thought on the on that level,
- 31:00I would definitely have to put Dave Chappelle up there. You know what I mean?
- 31:04To be a true thinker and letting us know where you can take comedy.
- 31:08Where you can not just be funny, but actually saying something.
- 31:14Mount Rushmore ain't enough. Because there's only four. That's what makes it
- 31:18so tough. Once you get to the third, then you think about that fourth.
- 31:22More people pop up in your head. That's such a challenge.
- 31:26Then it makes me want to put a real person that I know because I'm not a spectator.
- 31:34You know what I mean? This ain't like LeBron James saying who is...
- 31:38This is like LeBron James saying who is his favorite basketball player as he played with them.
- 31:44You know what I'm saying? It's like LeBron said, my favorite player is Wade.
- 31:47You know what I'm saying? It's like...
- 31:52But I'm going to have to go with it because where he's taken it and where he have taken it.
- 31:58But it's – see, the Dave Chappelle – with the Dave Chappelle,
- 32:03it's an honorable mention Chris Rock.
- 32:07But I'm going to have to just come out and say it. Nate Jackson.
- 32:11Okay. I ain't bad at that because he got the club up there. Yeah. Yeah.
- 32:16Nate Jackson. Nate Jackson and it's like in this honorable mention they go it's
- 32:23about who I see tell a joke the latest if I just watch Nate Jackson in the car
- 32:28Nate Jackson is number one but if I just seen Tony Roberts.
- 32:36You know it goes Nate Jackson Tony Roberts Nate Jackson Tony Roberts Nate Jackson
- 32:43Tony Roberts but But Nate Jackson has been able to deliver his greatness on video.
- 32:51And that matters. Yeah.
- 32:53That matters. So definitely Nate Jackson. Okay.
- 32:57So we have Richard Pryor, Cat Williams, Dave Chappelle, Nate Jackson,
- 33:03and then honorable mention was Chris Rock and then Tony Roberts. And Tony Roberts.
- 33:07Okay. So, yeah, if we ever add another mountain to it, we'll put it through to it.
- 33:11Richard Prowler was interested because he was the first comedy special I ever
- 33:16thought was like Live on Sunset or whatever and he was the very first comedian
- 33:20for me coming up was that was a comedian but also a movie star,
- 33:26but then so well with how he was in real life he didn't really carry himself
- 33:32how you would see like a movie star would carry himself he's like I'm a real
- 33:36person whereas a movie star is just like you gotta see me as this ominous figure that,
- 33:41the only time you see me is on when I'm perfect. Yeah.
- 33:47Richard Pryor, I know he spent a lot of time... Paul Mooney is from the Bay
- 33:51Area. He's from Berkeley, Oakland, and stuff like that.
- 33:54So when I hear Richard Pryor's voice me being raised in Oakland,
- 34:00that's how my parents... That's how my dad talked.
- 34:02You know what I'm saying? So it's like...
- 34:06I am a Richard Pryor offspring, like in reality, like that's the way I think.
- 34:12Yeah. How do I think of myself as a black person? How do I think of myself compared to white people?
- 34:18Yeah. How do I think of myself compared to street people? I mean,
- 34:21Richard Pryor was in the movie, The Mac.
- 34:24So Richard Pryor was telling jokes to the Black Panthers.
- 34:27Richard Pryor was in Oakland, in the Bay Area, in San Francisco,
- 34:32doing these drugs and raising these children and all these things.
- 34:36And a lot of his managers was from Oakland and stuff like that.
- 34:41It's like, this is Richard Pryor.
- 34:42Yeah, there's a lot of comedy scenes that is sold in Oakland,
- 34:46man, that people wouldn't really... He was performing in Oakland like at Henry J.
- 34:51Kaiser and stuff. I just performed at Henry J.
- 34:53Kaiser for the La Feast. We raised money for the food banks.
- 34:58But Richard Pryor did a lot of stuff in Oakland.
- 35:02So when I hear that voice i'd be
- 35:05like that that's a real person yeah that's not a moose yeah he's one of us like
- 35:11that's that's my parents voice you know so definitely richard pride that's why
- 35:16he had to come up first the way we say nigga the way we talk about things the
- 35:22politicalness in his jokes,
- 35:24the the the coolness all that
- 35:27stuff richard pride is just something else yeah first time i watched to lie
- 35:30about sus and I was like I didn't really laugh I was
- 35:33like I'm like no this is real this motherfucker just talking like I mean you
- 35:36know you can get the chuckling right now but nothing like how people oh I die
- 35:39hard laughing I'm like no this motherfucker just speaking some real shit that
- 35:42I can relate to I'm all like damn I used that when I on the voice over when
- 35:47he was talking about niggas don't buy tickets until the damn show.
- 35:54That man they got extra cards for that show he's still in white people's seats,
- 36:01and then he makes and then he stinks up for white people and stuff like that. When you see how,
- 36:08Samuel L. Jackson act and even Snoop Dogg and all those people being real black
- 36:14men and making white people love them. That's all Richard Pryor.
- 36:18Richard Pryor wasn't a watered down black dude.
- 36:22You know, he would have to retire the word nigga because he said it a thousand
- 36:25times. But that's Richard Pryor. Yeah.
- 36:28You know what I mean? So the reason why we say nigga after every word,
- 36:33that doesn't come from rap music. That comes from Richard Pryor. That's funny.
- 36:37And then we had Cat Williams.
- 36:41Was the respect level for you going higher for him after the club Shay Shay,
- 36:45or you still had that same appreciation? I'm not going to lie.
- 36:50I could tell you that. I'm not going to lie. It's almost like Tupac and stuff like that.
- 36:54When people say Tupac ain't the best rapper on earth, they judging him by albums
- 36:59that came out after he died.
- 37:02But when you compare Me Against
- 37:05the World and All Eyes On Me and Machiavelli no
- 37:09rapper is touching those three albums now you want to say all those things that
- 37:13he was putting out that he threw away and they just used it so they could sell
- 37:17records then you could say sometimes he was saying the same thing over and over
- 37:21again that's the same thing with Cat Williams you get his first three specials,
- 37:28nobody's touching Pym Chronicles it's not a comedian touching I don't think
- 37:32Dave Chappelle got something that could touch Pimp Chronicles.
- 37:37Classic. Self-esteem. That's a stain of self.
- 37:41What do you do for a didamix? You know?
- 37:45There's nobody here. Nothing on this planet before or after is touching what
- 37:53is it called? Pimp Chronicles?
- 37:55Yeah. Him in that green outfit. The green outfit. He had the big-ass belt buckle
- 37:59and all that. Nothing. No. That changed.
- 38:03It's it's like it's BC it's everything after that or before that yeah nobody
- 38:09I don't think I can't say anybody got anything better than Pimp Chronicles but that's why I put,
- 38:16honorable mention is Chris Rock is Chris Rock don't let us down no Chris Rock
- 38:22be delivered on the specials man right and it like what was the one that he
- 38:26did with um with Netflix or whatever when he was in the.
- 38:33Just to do that live, you know what I mean? To do that live stream and all that
- 38:36stuff, like Break It Better, stuff like that, because I feel like with comedy,
- 38:41the term special, like comedy special, is kind of getting watered down to where
- 38:46now it can no longer be about the jokes that makes it special.
- 38:52It's just got to be the overall package that you deliver to the people that
- 38:56makes it special now. And when you do things for years,
- 39:01like E-40. E-40, probably one of my favorite rappers of all time.
- 39:06But E-40 got actually 10,000 songs.
- 39:11He got 10,000 songs and maybe 100 good songs.
- 39:17But that's how it is. That's how it is. That's 10 of them.
- 39:22That's what I do. That's what I do. I say, am I going to get mad?
- 39:26He got probably 9,000 not-so-good songs. Nah, I'm true. I got you with that.
- 39:34He's already got a hundred songs nobody can touch.
- 39:38That's the greatest. I'm not gonna, because he was nice enough to do a verse
- 39:43for his cousin, I'm not gonna count that against him.
- 39:46Yeah, so when I did the bitch remix video with E40, Too Short,
- 39:51making cupcakes, they was like, hey man, this is one of those 10,000,
- 39:55we just gonna push to the center.
- 39:57You did do that, huh? For anybody that don't know, I did a few years ago,
- 40:03I did a music video for the Trunk Boys.
- 40:06Trunk Boys did the remix to Bitch. Still had E-40 and Too Short in the music video.
- 40:11They just had me up at the music video getting abused by my girlfriend and making
- 40:15cupcakes and shit. Didn't Kendrick just use the Trunk Boys for his script?
- 40:19Small circle, man. Small circle. Me and Kendrick, we connected.
- 40:25That's why yeah that's why i had
- 40:28to put cat williams got even that pimpin pimping
- 40:31and like his first three specials
- 40:34i don't care what he does after that i'm not
- 40:38paying attention to yeah yeah you know that's a pip carticles yeah yeah he's
- 40:42saying with dave chappelle he's just greatness and in the level in what he's
- 40:47reaching for anybody could go after low-hanging fruit he's going through stuff
- 40:52that people gotta you when when dave chapelle talks people go through it with a fine-tooth comb,
- 40:58yeah you know he can't just look up and say i was just saying some no he's got
- 41:02to pull a surprise they're like we're gonna dissect every single word right
- 41:06people don't understand what that actually means so yeah definitely dave chapelle
- 41:12and then nate jackson what i have seen when i've seen him when the Bay Area Black went.
- 41:18Shoot, we used to pay him to come out here and do shows and it was like...
- 41:24I have seen people damn near about the you know shit on themselves like damn
- 41:29near throw up eyes popping And the level of funny he is and it's off the cuff,
- 41:36And then even once he go into material,
- 41:39It'd be like yeah, nate jackson is.
- 41:43Yeah, cool Some people are just different,
- 41:47And he's revolutionized at the game and stuff, you know So that's what we have
- 41:50we have richard pryor cat williams
- 41:51stadiums dave chapelle nate jackson honoring mentions was
- 41:54chris rock and then tony roberts
- 41:58tony roberts yeah i can't forget about the the legend out here tony roberts
- 42:02and stuff like that so before we do get up here wrap up this episode was anything
- 42:05that you want to let people know before we do um let you know that um yeah we
- 42:09i'm going on the tour i'm in your city you can always inbox me and say hey it's
- 42:16a comedy show i can reach out to the promoter and set it up where I come to your town.
- 42:21I'm coming anyway, but it'd be good to make money with the people that's already
- 42:25making money there that got something.
- 42:27I'm not just trying to come to comedy clubs. I want to come to people's Sunday night spot.
- 42:32I want to come to people's underground spot. You know what I mean?
- 42:36I'm not scared of black people. You know what I mean?
- 42:39If I got to come to your motorcycle club, your Elks Lodge, that's where my comedy belongs.
- 42:47You know what I mean? I'm the chitlin circuit dude.
- 42:50Even when I make it big, I'm going to bring the white people to the Chitlin
- 42:53circuit to make them some real money. So, yeah, that's what I'm on.
- 42:58And where can people follow you at? They can follow me on everything.
