Welcome to Kick Ass Daily, where we bring news, trivia, fun
• 0:29
facts, and more just for curious kids like you.
• 0:32
Today, get ready for an exciting episode all about one of India's
• 0:36
most famous cricket players. His name is Mahendra Singh
• 0:40
Dhoni, but most people just call him Ms. Dhoni or Mahi.
• 0:44
He is known for being cool, calm, and making some of the
• 0:47
most amazing plays in cricket history.
• 0:49
Let's start at the very beginning.
• 0:51
Ms. Dhoni was born on July 7th, 1981 in a city called Ranchi,
• 0:57
which is in the state of Jharkhand, India.
• 0:59
Growing up, Dhoni loved playing sports.
• 1:02
Like many kids, he tried different ones.
• 1:05
Actually, his first sport was football, which is called soccer
• 1:08
in some countries. He was a goalkeeper for his
• 1:11
school football team. One day, his school cricket
• 1:14
coach noticed that Doney had quick reflexes and asked him to
• 1:18
try being the wicketkeeper for the school's cricket team.
• 1:21
A wicketkeeper stands behind the batsman and tries to catch the
• 1:24
ball if the batsman misses it. Dhoni gave it a try and wow, he
• 1:28
was good at it. That's how his journey in
• 1:30
cricket began. Now, cricket is a super popular
• 1:34
sport in India. If you've ever played baseball,
• 1:37
cricket is a bit like that but with its own special rules and
• 1:40
equipment. In cricket, players use a bat
• 1:43
and a hardball and they score runs by hitting the ball and
• 1:46
running between two sets of sticks called wickets.
• 1:49
There are bowlers who throw the ball, batsman who try to hit it
• 1:53
and fielders who try to catch or stop the ball.
• 1:56
Doni kept practicing and playing cricket and soon got noticed for
• 1:59
his amazing wicket keeping and batting skills.
• 2:02
But things weren't always easy for him.
• 2:05
He had to travel by train for hours to play matches and
• 2:08
sometimes even slept at train stations.
• 2:11
He also worked as a ticket collector for the Indian
• 2:13
Railways for a while to help support his family.
• 2:16
Still, he never gave up on his dream of playing cricket for
• 2:19
India. Did you know that before playing
• 2:21
for India's national team, Dhoni played for a state team,
• 2:25
Jharkhand, in a competition called the Rangi Trophy?
• 2:28
It's kind of like a championship where the best teams from
• 2:31
different states compete against each other.
• 2:33
Dhoni scored lots of runs and impressed everyone with his
• 2:37
powerful batting. In 2004, when Dhoni was 20,
• 2:41
three years old, he finally got a chance to play his first match
• 2:44
for the Indian national cricket team.
• 2:47
This is called making your debut.
• 2:49
He was very nervous but he didn't let that stop him.
• 2:53
Soon he became famous for hitting big sixes.
• 2:56
A6 in cricket is when the batsman hits the ball over the
• 2:59
boundary without it touching the ground, which scores six runs.
• 3:03
That's the highest number of runs you can get from a single
• 3:06
shot. Doni quickly became known as a
• 3:08
finisher, which means he could help his team win matches even
• 3:12
if the game was very close or tough.
• 3:14
He stayed calm under pressure and made smart decisions.
• 3:18
In 2007, just three years after joining the national team, Doni
• 3:22
was chosen to be the captain of India's T20 team for the ICC
• 3:26
World 2020 tournament. This was a big deal because
• 3:30
captains have to make important decisions like who will bowl
• 3:33
next and where players should stand on the field.
• 3:36
Guess what? Under Dhoni's leadership, India
• 3:39
won the T20 World Cup in 2007. It was the very first time this
• 3:44
tournament was held and India surprised everyone by beating
• 3:47
Pakistan in the final match. Dhoni became a hero overnight.
• 3:52
But that was just the beginning. In 2011, Dhoni LED India's team
• 3:57
in the ICC Cricket World Cup, which is one of the biggest
• 4:00
tournaments in all of sports. The final match was played in
• 4:04
Mumbai against Sri Lanka. Dhoni scored 91 runs without
• 4:08
getting out and hit the winning shot.
• 4:10
India won the World Cup and the whole country celebrated.
• 4:14
Here's a fun fact, Ms. Dhoni was the first captain in history to
• 4:18
win all three major ICC trophies.
• 4:22
That's the T20 World Cup in 2007, the ODI World Cup in 2011
• 4:27
and the Champions Trophy in 2013.
• 4:30
That's something no other cricket captain had ever done
• 4:33
before. Dhoni is also famous for his
• 4:36
unique batting style and his special cricket shot called the
• 4:39
helicopter shot. In this shot, he swings his bat
• 4:42
in a way that makes the ball fly really high and far.
• 4:45
Many young players try to copy the shot because it looks so
• 4:48
cool and is very effective. Apart from being a great
• 4:52
batsman, Dhoni is also one of the best wicket keepers.
• 4:56
He holds the record for the most stumpings in international
• 4:59
cricket. A stump thing is when the wicket
• 5:01
keeper quickly removes the bales from the stumps while the
• 5:04
batsman is out of their crease. It's a tricky thing to do
• 5:07
because you need lightning, fast hands and sharp eyes.
• 5:11
Donee's teammates and coaches often talk about how calm he is.
• 5:14
Even when the match is very tense.
• 5:17
They say he rarely gets angry or nervous.
• 5:21
He's called Captain Cool because he stays relaxed and focused no
• 5:25
matter what's happening in the game.
• 5:27
Did you know that Donee is also a great leader off the field?
• 5:30
He encourages young players, gives them advice and helps them
• 5:34
feel confident. Many players who started their
• 5:36
careers under Dhoni's captaincy have become stars themselves.
• 5:40
Dhoni has also played in the Indian Premier League or IPL,
• 5:44
which is a professional cricket league with teams from different
• 5:47
cities in India. He is the captain of the Chennai
• 5:50
Super Kings or CSK. Under his leadership, CSK has
• 5:54
won several IPL championships. The team's fans love Dhoni and
• 5:59
call him Thala, which means leader in the Tamil language.
• 6:03
Even though Doni is very famous, he is known for being humble and
• 6:07
down to earth. He likes simple things such as
• 6:10
riding his motorcycles, spending time with his family and playing
• 6:14
with his dogs. Doni has many different
• 6:16
motorcycles and is even a co-owner of a racing team.
• 6:20
In August 2020, Doni announced that he was retiring from
• 6:24
international cricket. This means he no longer plays
• 6:27
for the national team, but he still plays in the IPL for
• 6:30
Chennai Super Kings. Fans were sad to see him retire,
• 6:34
but they are grateful for all the memories he created.
• 6:37
Donee's journey inspires millions of kids and adults to
• 6:41
work hard, stay calm, and never give up on their dreams.
• 6:44
Let's do a quick recap of what we've learned about Ms. Dhoni
• 6:48
today. He grew up in raunchy and loved
• 6:51
sports from a young age. He started as a football
• 6:53
goalkeeper but switched to cricket and became a
• 6:56
wicketkeeper. Dhoni worked hard and made his
• 6:59
way to the Indian national team. He became a famous batsman, a
• 7:03
cool captain, and LED India to win the T20 World Cup in 2007,
• 7:08
the ODI World Cup in 2011, and the Champions Trophy in 2013.
