- 0:27Welcome back to another wonderful episode of Pop Culture Junkie podcast. My name is Shauna and I am joined by my fellow junkie whose name is Olivia.
- 0:38Hey, we just got our nails done like two hours ago. No one can see them, but they're really pretty.
- 0:45Yes, unless you're on YouTube and you get to see our gorgeous nails.
- 0:48And follow us on YouTube.
- 0:50You can see our nails. That's the only reason. And I like being in the nude with you today. The fact that we're just totally nude is great too.
- 0:59Yeah, I'm trying to get YouTube subscribers. There you go. That's how it all starts.
- 1:05We are new.
- 1:07How are you? What have you been up to? What have you been watching? Reading, listening to.
- 1:12So I was still stuck in the Game of Thrones is my obsession lately.
- 1:20Absolutely.
- 1:21I have been speaking of YouTube, stuck on David Lightbringer's YouTube channel and it's all the theories about what's going to be in Winds of Winter.
- 1:32And then also all of the magic theories, the white circus in the book, the others and then Azora high prophecies.
- 1:43Like the white walkers.
- 1:45Yeah, and the book they're called the others.
- 1:47Interesting.
- 1:48Okay. Like the green men, all of those. And I've just been like so deep in it.
- 1:52But I just realized that the bar that we always go to, the Casual Pint is doing a Game of Thrones trivia.
- 1:58Wait, when? July 30th. So I'll be a town we should go. So I was like, it's just been serendipitous.
- 2:05I was preparing for my moment.
- 2:07I love that you still call it Game of Thrones because so do my husband and I.
- 2:10Well, like you want to watch Thrones tonight and I'll be like, "Oh shit, I have the dragons."
- 2:14Ah, whatever, it's the Reylens.
- 2:16Game of Dragons.
- 2:17Game of the Dragon House for this tonight.
- 2:20Okay, so spoilers for episode. What was that for?
- 2:23Yeah. Of Game of the House of the Dragons.
- 2:30House of the Dragons.
- 2:31Were you?
- 2:32Episode four.
- 2:33I got a spoiler somehow on like Facebook or Instagram that people were saying that this character
- 2:41was going to die.
- 2:42Again, spoilers in three, two, one.
- 2:47People were saying Renease was going to die.
- 2:49And I was like, why would they think that I went off fuck? That's right, there was a whole
- 2:53book about this.
- 2:54There is a complete, absolutely, absolutely, half a finished book.
- 2:58Did you like how they portrayed it?
- 3:01Like Renease's death?
- 3:02Yeah, yeah. I think it was good.
- 3:04A little bit different from what's in the book.
- 3:07So in the show, they make it where Aegon is kind of like drunk driving his dragon
- 3:14to this battle.
- 3:16Do you see the wine drive?
- 3:19Don't drink a dragon.
- 3:22Don't drink a dragon, especially.
- 3:24So in the book, it was more of like they did a coordinated attack on her.
- 3:30And they always said that they thought she would be able to win if it had just been her
- 3:35and Vegar and not also Sunfire.
- 3:38But I really liked how that they did it and they added that complexity to it.
- 3:43And like, Amand basically like a dracarus like trying to kill Aegon.
- 3:51It was crazy.
- 3:53I was thinking that too.
- 3:54I'm like, okay, he's trying to kill his brother, right?
- 3:57And then we thought it's kind of up for interpretation.
- 4:01Is he trying to kill him or was it like a whoops, you just caught caught in the crossfire.
- 4:06It could be either.
- 4:07But to me, it seemed like he was shooting and then in the back of his mind, he probably went
- 4:13two birds one stone.
- 4:14Exactly.
- 4:15And if he dies, he dies.
- 4:16And if he doesn't, he doesn't.
- 4:17Let's just see what happens.
- 4:18Yeah.
- 4:19Because obviously they have that scene earlier where they're supposed both speaking like
- 4:24Hivalarian to each other.
- 4:26And Aegon's like, it's like make goose jump.
- 4:30Be a piece of lone egg.
- 4:32Oh shit.
- 4:33And Leo Tekka, yo Pasola, Aspiradora, Pasin Mexico.
- 4:39Oh my god.
- 4:40Yeah.
- 4:41Me and Olivia are going to Mexico in like two days and she's already working with us.
- 4:45She's going to be like El Bono as a key season Spanish.
- 4:51Season Spanish.
- 4:52And I lived in Texas and Arizona.
- 4:54So you should be better at spitting.
- 4:56A just language, not not a natural.
- 4:58I would be Aegon.
- 5:00Why say many word?
- 5:02If you were to trick.
- 5:04Yes.
- 5:05I will help you.
- 5:06Yeah.
- 5:07As three.
- 5:08You also said you're not much better or so.
- 5:10No, I've been, I have a very long string that I have.
- 5:13I mean, yeah, streak on duo lingo.
- 5:15Yeah.
- 5:16And my Nana has taught me how to say pussy.
- 5:21I know how to say fuck and pussy.
- 5:24And where's the bathroom and how much does this cost?
- 5:28Okay.
- 5:29And that's how you need to know.
- 5:31And it's like I'm trying to order a prostitute.
- 5:34You probably are.
- 5:35Guantanahu questions.
- 5:37First of all, no shea in El Bono.
- 5:42Yeah.
- 5:43Yeah.
- 5:44That's all right.
- 5:45I will let our friend Ashley speak for us.
- 5:47Yes.
- 5:48Ashley and Jessica.
- 5:49You just have to go like this.
- 5:50Yeah.
- 5:51I see you.
- 5:52I see you.
- 5:53Is that what works on Nana?
- 5:55Naia.
- 5:56On Nana.
- 5:57Nana.
- 5:58There we go.
- 5:59That's what I'm telling you.
- 6:01No, Nana taught me La Panocha es pussy.
- 6:04Panocha.
- 6:05Oh, that's pussy.
- 6:07Okay.
- 6:08But yeah, how's the dragon?
- 6:10House of the dragon drone games has been great.
- 6:14Yeah.
- 6:15So when Sir Kristen Cole walks her crispy cream.
- 6:18Yeah, that's like hate him.
- 6:20Walks up to Amen.
- 6:21When it looks like he had his knife out, but it also kind of looked like he was sheeding
- 6:25it at the same time.
- 6:29So I think it is whenever Sunfire is down and like, A-gon is broke.
- 6:32Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:33It looks like he was like, was sheeding it again?
- 6:35But do you think that Kristen Cole is going to like do something about it or just kind of pretend
- 6:41it never happened?
- 6:42I think he's going to pretend like it never happened.
- 6:44I think so.
- 6:45So Kristen Cole is a baby back bitch.
- 6:47Yeah.
- 6:48It's a attitude.
- 6:49It about foot.
- 6:50Oh my gosh.
- 6:51So the actor actually made a public statement about how people were like,
- 6:54being crazy to him.
- 6:55And I hate that.
- 6:56Okay.
- 6:57Listen, the fact that we hate this character so much just means that he's a great actor.
- 7:04Yeah.
- 7:05I feel the same way.
- 7:06He's saying it's like such a nice man too.
- 7:07Exactly.
- 7:08Exactly.
- 7:09That's the thing.
- 7:10It's like if he's playing a character that you hate that much.
- 7:13That means the actor is doing his job.
- 7:15It's the same thing with like the actor who played Joppery.
- 7:18Yeah.
- 7:19And he's like, I'm like, I'm back to acting though.
- 7:21Yeah.
- 7:22And the actor who played Ramsey, right?
- 7:25Ramsey Bolton.
- 7:26Exactly.
- 7:27Like the fact that we hate them so much means that they're doing a good job.
- 7:30So don't shit on the actor.
- 7:31He's not the character.
- 7:32Yeah.
- 7:33It's really interesting.
- 7:34I know we've talked about parasocial relationships on the podcast before, but I think it's really
- 7:40even more interesting when it's a fake character and a fake world even and people like really
- 7:47can't separate that.
- 7:49Yeah.
- 7:50That just seems like ignorance to me.
- 7:52I don't know how else to explain like bands.
- 7:55Touch grass.
- 7:56Yeah.
- 7:57Go out and touch grass and breathe air as a person.
- 8:00I don't know.
- 8:01Yeah.
- 8:02Yeah.
- 8:03Get some other relationships beyond the one with your screen.
- 8:06Yeah.
- 8:07It's just take a step back.
- 8:08It's kind of sad because this guy is probably a very nice guy and he's a great actor.
- 8:13That's why I Instagram made limited comments.
- 8:16Man, that sucks.
- 8:17Yeah.
- 8:18That sucks.
- 8:19Yeah.
- 8:20I want to play a villain in something that I don't want people to hate me by when you and Oscar
- 8:26are in this case an Emmy.
- 8:27If it wins me an Emmy, then I will be hated by the masses.
- 8:30That's fine.
- 8:31Yeah.
- 8:32Exactly.
- 8:33Yeah.
- 8:34I'll say that.
- 8:35What else have I been doing?
- 8:36I finished fourth wing that book that I talked about last week that I said at the time reminded
- 8:41me of divergent.
- 8:44It didn't.
- 8:45I'm so sorry that I said that.
- 8:48I saw magical college and we're like, okay, I mean, okay, we're going to talk about spoiler
- 8:52alert anime in this episode.
- 8:54And there's a lot of magical colleges in anime or man magical high schools, I guess I should
- 9:00say.
- 9:01So there's a lot of tropes that I caught early on.
- 9:04But by the end of the book, I was sucked.
- 9:07I was upset.
- 9:08You guys, she finished it in a week.
- 9:10She can read now.
- 9:11I learned how to read favorite would be so proud of it.
- 9:15She responded was like, oh my god, I loved it.
- 9:17Now I was like, look at my little, a little, a little ago.
- 9:20My little little little baby's come so far.
- 9:22She can sound out words.
- 9:26She can read a whole book in more than three months.
- 9:28I was obsessed.
- 9:29It just, it hooked me.
- 9:32It was so action packed.
- 9:34And there are like spicy scenes, but they felt well earned.
- 9:40And I believe that these two people really cared about each other and that they trained for
- 9:45a whole year.
- 9:46And I also like that she was 20 years old, right?
- 9:49So she's not a teenager.
- 9:51And so I kept thinking like, who knew I was pretty, you know, like six months ago.
- 9:58Yeah.
- 9:59Or, you know, like, that's how I would have been.
- 10:02Did you know that Taran is based on the author's 12 year old American Bulldog?
- 10:09No.
- 10:10So Taran is a grumpy little dragon in the book.
- 10:15A grumpy big dragon.
- 10:17Grumpy big old dragon.
- 10:19It's like vague art essentially to cross over the two worlds.
- 10:23When I was watching House of the Game of Thrones dragons, I thought I was like, which one's
- 10:28like Taran?
- 10:29And which one's like, vague and darn it?
- 10:31And darn it is like, son fire.
- 10:32I know.
- 10:33Or a piece of son fire.
- 10:34Oh, I cried whenever the, the dragons were fighting.
- 10:38I don't want the dragons to die there.
- 10:42They're not.
- 10:43But we know they all do.
- 10:44I mean, yeah, but in this book, there are also dragons.
- 10:49Yeah.
- 10:50Yeah, I really liked it.
- 10:51The twist at the end is so good.
- 10:53I was shook.
- 10:54Yeah.
- 10:55I know our friend Jessica was like, I called it.
- 10:56I didn't fucking call it.
- 10:57I didn't call it.
- 10:58I had no idea.
- 10:59At the end of the second book, Rebecca Yarros is amazing.
- 11:04At a cliffhanger at the end of a book, and you love it and you hate it because I read
- 11:10Iron Flame probably like a month after it came out, which is the second book in the series.
- 11:16And I was so upset at the end of it.
- 11:19I was like, I need an audience.
- 11:21I tried to listen to Iron Flame.
- 11:24And for some reason, it's locked on Spotify.
- 11:27I don't know if it's like a premium.
- 11:29And I have Spotify premium.
- 11:30Yeah.
- 11:31It's like what the fuck, I don't know.
- 11:35And I didn't get my whole 15 hours, whatever they give you free.
- 11:37But yeah.
- 11:38I guess I'm just going to have to read it old school.
- 11:40I said poor.
- 11:41And I did read.
- 11:43Fourth wing.
- 11:44Fourth wing.
- 11:45Old school.
- 11:46I just listened to it a few times.
- 11:47Yeah.
- 11:48Love driving.
- 11:49That's normally what I do.
- 11:50Because I'm like, if I'm hooked, I need to do things.
- 11:52But I also want to keep learning the story.
- 11:55The only time I listen to it is if I'm driving somewhere.
- 11:59Oh, grocery shopping, audiobook.
- 12:02Really?
- 12:03Always.
- 12:04Yeah.
- 12:05Really?
- 12:06Anything where I'm alone in public, I just have a little earphone in.
- 12:08I have a lot of stuff.
- 12:09And it's either a podcast or an audiobook.
- 12:11Like, I can't be alone with my thoughts.
- 12:13He's talking to somebody.
- 12:16She's trying to be all professional.
- 12:18And every head is just like, and he bent her over the arm while inserting himself.
- 12:24I'm sauce. But then the dragon came and burned about alive. Yeah. I know just I say I yap or I have to listen to yapping. You know, you do
- 12:37Yeah, I love a gap. That's why that's why I'm doing this. I am the people in my personal life are so happy that I do this now
- 12:47though because they don't have to like listen to me go on about whatever pop culture thing that they really don't
- 12:53care about. Well, I'm like, yeah, but did you know Bradley Cooper? Yeah, we fucking listen to your podcast, Olivia, we know. Yeah, but
- 13:03for what about Bradley Cooper? Um, well, the immediate fact that came to my mind was the Bradley Cooper is Sukie, uh,
- 13:12waterhouse reading Lolita in the park. Do you know that picture? I mean, no, but I can't sure it's iconic. And I just imagine
- 13:22it. I think she was like freshly over the age of 18. Oh, God. So of course, he's reading Lolita with her fucking
- 13:30free. And so it was like a real meta. Uh, they called the paparazzi for sure on. And it's like the clearest picture.
- 13:38It's like when Grimes was reading. What's that book that's like the longest book ever known ever? It's atless shrugged. Is that what it is? Yeah, it's, I don't
- 13:49know. It's a picture of Grimes reading something that you're like really girl. The cult assigned it to board doing Elon and yeah, well, yeah.
- 14:03I want to. He's got like a shelf, like a weird, weird angle of his body. Every time I think about Elon Musk, I think about his
- 14:13chest and just how protruded is that's what I mean. Like he's got like he looks like a two kids in a trench coat. That also reminds me though, I feel like the
- 14:26inverse of that is somehow Elon Musk at the beach. Have you seen that picture of him where he is literally? I don't know how. Well, listen, I don't, I'm not. He's
- 14:36telling me one. He's telling me. Elon Musk is just scosting. Disgusting. All it was wanted. Yes. Disgusting. No, but it's literally repelling light. Like I don't know how it's somehow somehow refact refact refact. Yeah, reflect. He almost. It's a word. Yeah, there we go. He almost. That's like he would be a twilight vampire. Yeah. Like if you bought a twilight vampire from Wish. That's what SpaceX is about.
- 15:06I don't even care about Mars. I just want the skin. Oh my god. Elon Musk. I love my Tesla. Yeah, and I feel like Grimes is like a weird somehow. Kristen Stewart as Bella. I can't see that. Yeah, absolutely. Oh, I love that. Okay. So they were just in their twilight. Do you think there is Elon Musk and Grimes fanfic?
- 15:34AE. Oh, duh. AE X 12 is Renez May. Their child, whose name is. Yeah. Yeah. And then the next day they're Renez May. It's just a CG baby. Have all of his children. It's just computer. Adam made. Yes. Has anyone seen AE X 12?
- 15:54Because anyone actually met one of Elon Musk's. Is it 12 at this point? It's just I think it's Renez May. Guys, I think we had. Yeah, we hacked the kids. We're just fucking dunking on these kids.
- 16:06So who's grimes is Jacob? Is it Duffy from the cold? Oh my god. Duffy that you got me crying out for a mercy. That. No, it's like a TikTok sound where she's like.
- 16:19Um, Duffy, the leader of the coat. Oh, you told me. Yes, it's so good. Okay. Duffy dumb is shit. Again, the people in my life are so happy that I do this.
- 16:31I am happy. You're happy. There's a people in your life. Okay. So they were just living in their twilight dreams. We somehow like them more now.
- 16:41I do kind of like them more now and I kind of want to call Brad Perry. Is he meant Elon? Do you think Brad Perry is meant Elon?
- 16:51There's some reason even if he hasn't, I feel like Brad would be like, yeah, yeah, me and Elon. He'd have a story. He would just have a story.
- 17:00What if he had like a Elon was lapsing in memory story? Yeah, maybe. Yeah, he's got a good job on a high. I feel like we get it to ask him. Yeah, phone a friend.
- 17:10A friend. A friend. A friend. What do you think about Brian? He just flexing in his underpants. Yeah, we're going to get an update.
- 17:25All right. So it's become pretty clear at this point that Olivia and I are kind of the same person. No, no, absolutely not.
- 17:33There is one facet of pop culture that she has not explored yet that I am a huge fan of. And that is anime.
- 17:41So tonight I'm going to share some of my favorite shows with her. She's already watched a couple episodes.
- 17:47And we're going to just talk about the history of anime and what Japanese anime is. I am so excited. We've been hanging out for the past like three hours.
- 17:56And I wanted to talk to you about it so bad. And we're just like, no, no, no, no, hold, hold. Wait. Wait till we record. We do it all for you.
- 18:05We do it for the fans. So if you say like the word animation, it can mean anything. It's like a cartoon.
- 18:10You can have Disney animation Pixar or whatever. Japanese anime really kind of depicts like a certain type of animation and originated in Japan.
- 18:22So in the early 20th century, anime kind of traces its roots back there. And it was influenced a lot by Western animation styles.
- 18:30With the first Japanese animation in 1917 as a silent short film in the 30s and 40s, there was a lot of like experimental propaganda films that came out during World War II.
- 18:44Also as a person who has been to Japan and gone to a World War II museum as an American the entire time you're just like this.
- 18:52Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.
- 18:58Sorry. Bye. Bye.
- 19:01What's known as the golden age of anime is the 60s and the 70s. There is an iconic anime called Astro Boy that came out in 1963 that kind of introduced a lot of tropes, which is kind of like a theme.
- 19:16You know what a fringes that we see in anime to this day. Mecha anime came out in the very late 70s and that's mecha is giant robots, which is Gundam Gundam wing things like that, which is still very popular in Japan.
- 19:35If you go to Japan, there is literally a life-sized mecha like a Gundam robot. That is, I don't think it's in Tokyo, but it's somewhere in that area.
- 19:48And did you ever watch Power Rangers as a kid?
- 19:52Yes.
- 19:53Okay. So a lot of that is kind of like Japanese influence with mecha and stuff, right?
- 19:58So they all kind of form into one giant robot.
- 20:02Okay. Okay. Yeah. Pick it up when I'm putting down a little bit here. I'd get the robots.
- 20:09In the 80s and 90s, anime gained international popularity. So shows like Dragon Ball.
- 20:16I made Olivia watch an iconic episode of Dragon Ball Z. The main character is Goku.
- 20:23Yep. Dragon Ball is the prequel. So it came first. And that shows Goku as a child. He is an alien. I feel like are you a probably have so many questions about this one?
- 20:36I was like 95th is a choice of an episode to send me in, but I do remember you talking about him because of animated characters who had no business being that hot.
- 20:50Oh, yes. And I think that episode is when he gets introduced, right?
- 20:54So my anime crush is this character named Trunks who is from that anime.
- 21:00Okay. He wasn't in the episode that you watch, but you are on the right track.
- 21:05But it's just all of these jacked out of their minds, dudes, right?
- 21:09Sailor Moon was also kind of came out in the 80s and 90s.
- 21:13I love Sailor Moon. Yeah.
- 21:15Okay. God. I couldn't tell you what happened in it, but I loved it when I was younger.
- 21:18I mean, same. I remember I had a Sailor Moon backpack when I was in elementary school. And again,
- 21:24anime is a thing now that is so popular in mainstream. People don't make fun of you. You say you like anime.
- 21:31In the 90s, it was different. When I was in elementary school and I had a Sailor Moon backpack, kids at school made fun of me.
- 21:38Which is so dumb.
- 21:41I think it's like cool among Gen Z kids, but I think like all the way until I was in high school,
- 21:48it was still kind of like that. Really? Yeah.
- 21:50I guess kind of I was obsessed with Pokemon growing up too, which is another very popular anime.
- 21:57I feel like a lot of people don't think of Pokemon as that. And maybe it's because it was such like a
- 22:02UFs fad as well. I think so. It has that kind of art form and style, but you think of it as like
- 22:10an American thing almost. I think so. I think you're right. Like people watched the Pokemon cartoon
- 22:17on adults, not even adults swim. I guess that was more like Dragon Ball Z. Part two network.
- 22:22Yeah. So, cartoon network after school would play Pokemon Digimon and kind of those like child-oriented
- 22:32anime and they did originate in Japan. Yeah. But American kids, we just saw this. We didn't know,
- 22:39like this is a Japanese cartoon. We just thought it was a cool cartoon. Yeah. And then that's kind of like
- 22:45your stepping stone into, oh, I like Dragon Ball Z and like Inuasha and Sailor Moon. And then you
- 22:52start watching adult swim. And that's when kind of like the more adultly anime is come on where it's
- 22:59more violent. When Dragon Ball Z first started airing on two-nominant the cartoon network and stuff,
- 23:07they weren't allowed to show the actual blood. Because these were pretty violent anime. You watch
- 23:14the one episode and it's pretty violent, right? Yeah. And so they would edit out the blood in a lot of
- 23:19them. Or if they showed anime is on American television and they were smoking cigarettes, they would
- 23:24blur out the cigarettes. And it would just be like a black bar. It would be so funny. So 80s and 90s,
- 23:31a lot of these became more popular, right? And from the 2000s to the present, like I just mentioned,
- 23:37anime has become so much more popular, so much more mainstream. There's streaming networks that
- 23:43Crunchy Roll, which I gave you my... Okay. Shynormous password too. So Shanna gets me the episode,
- 23:52gets me a login to Crunchy Roll and it's her husband's login. And I go to go type it in. And it is,
- 24:01like, it's Fort Knox in this Crunchy Roll like login. I literally was like, what is Andrew
- 24:08protecting? It's like capital letter. Lowercase letter at sign upside down question mark. It was,
- 24:14it was crazy. I was like, okay, first of all, what the hell is Andrew hiding in this Crunchy Roll? Yeah.
- 24:20All of his enticing. Why does he make it so intense? Second, if I ever got logged out of that thing on my
- 24:26TV, I would never use it again. So I'm done. I'm done. I was struggling typing it on a computer. And
- 24:33I was like, if I had actually tried to do this on my fire state, it's like, why is she's copy and
- 24:37paste? I said, because I texted it to her. She's supposed to copy it. I don't know. Yeah, I don't
- 24:43connect my text to my work computer. Literally. He said it was because Germans kept logging in.
- 24:50Yeah. He said, well, she has all of his anime in German. She asked, why do you have such an insane
- 24:56password? And he just said, because of the Germans. He said the Germans and I went, oh, well,
- 25:00that explains it. So, a month from Germany, hacked his account was watching anime in German.
- 25:06Made a German. Yeah. And he didn't like that. I had that with a man in Colombia. And I let him use it
- 25:13for a while. How did you know it was a man? Because he made a profile named Carlos. Oh, like Carlos.
- 25:19Ola Carlos. But yeah, like me and my brother were both and we're like, do you know Carlos? No,
- 25:26we love him. He was like, fuck it. Yeah. It's the letter. We're like changing the password.
- 25:32Too clever. Yeah. Carlos. Yeah. Carlos. He's funny. He made his own profile. Just like him.
- 25:37So the guy. No, but Crunchyroll was convenient. Okay. So I want to go through a few subgenres of anime.
- 25:47Okay. And then we will talk about the episodes that you watched. And so we'll start with
- 25:53shown in anime. It's often targeted at young boys. It features action-packed plots and themes about
- 25:59friendship and adventure. These are really popular anime's. And they have a lot of what are we
- 26:04defining as young boys? Naruto one piece Pokemon. I would say kind of adolescent. Okay. These aren't
- 26:12going to be as violent. I mean, I love shown in anime's, but they are a little trope heavy where it's
- 26:20always, oh, yeah, we're going to get through this with the power of friendship. Me and all my
- 26:25buds are going to become the king of, I'm going to become king of the pirates. I'm going to become
- 26:28the most powerful wizard there ever was. It's usually like a young male character who wants to
- 26:35prove himself or love or family or glory or friendship, right? They just made one piece into
- 26:43like a live action, right? I either loved it. Yeah. So a lot of live action anime's are very
- 26:50interesting. Not good. There is a live action movie of Dragon Ball Z and James Marsters plays Piccolo,
- 26:58the green guy. Spike from Buffy. Oh, I think James Marston. James Marsters Spike from Buffy plays
- 27:08Piccolo. So he's in Dragon Ball Z the episode you watch, she's the green guy. Okay. Cool. And no, it's
- 27:14bad. It's awful. Probably widely known as like the worst. Probably the worst anime film of all time,
- 27:21live action. Okay. What did they make it? Oh gosh. I was in middle school or high school.
- 27:27It was an ambitious project. Yeah. It's bad. It's bad. What's the bad slide action? Like Avatar
- 27:34the last airbender? No, that's awful. The live action. Okay. Let me take that back. The anime that
- 27:42just came out on Netflix. Yeah. It's not that bad. In Night Shyamalan made a live action Avatar
- 27:48the last airbender movie. Also when I was in high school and it is probably the second worst anime film
- 27:54of all time. Oh, okay. Is that another one though? Yeah. The one on Netflix that just came out, I think,
- 27:59last year. And it's not bad. Okay. It's pretty good. Okay. It's very hit and miss the
- 28:05live action. The anime is because as you saw, like anime is so over the top and there's so many
- 28:12things that are just hard to capture with live action people, right? Yeah. I can do that.
- 28:18Just really quickly so we don't take up a lot of time going through these. Show Joe is kind of
- 28:24aimed at young girls like shown and is kind of quote unquote aimed at young boys. And I do want
- 28:28to preface that like this is just a very broad aimed at boys and girls binary definition.
- 28:34People can like whatever the fuck they like. I like Dragon Ball Z is a little kid and again,
- 28:39I got teased for that because that was a ball a show. None of this matters. Your gender like what you
- 28:44like. Seen in Sinan. I'm sorry if I'm mispronouncing that is geared towards adult men. So it's going to be
- 28:52a little more mature complex character is a little more violent. Show is like ghost in the shell or
- 28:58buzzer. Josie the opposite of that adult women. So it's going to have more realistic relationships,
- 29:06career challenges, things like that. I should also mention Olivia and I are both white people from
- 29:13America. So I am doing a broad overview of like Japanese anime. But if anybody is listening who
- 29:19is Japanese or from Japan, please don't. Like I hope I'm not slaughtering all of them. And it's
- 29:27with love. Exactly. And I say this with love too, but like a lot of things in Japanese culture that
- 29:33I've noticed are a lot more gender binary. Right. I was going to ask that because again, you know,
- 29:38Latin languages. There is like male and female words. And so I was wondering if Japanese was
- 29:45like that as well. Yeah. So I think it's just kind of your gender expectations in Japan too. When we
- 29:51went to Tokyo, this is a strange example, but we went to this sex store. Right. And it was five
- 30:01stories tall vertically. And each story was a different type of kind of kink. And so the first was
- 30:10kind of like sexy costumes. Okay. And the second floor was toys and the loob. And then the third one,
- 30:20arm, sorry, was four stories. The third one, all of a sudden, there was signs that said no women allowed.
- 30:25Women can't go past this point. So I literally went to my husband. I was like, you must go up there
- 30:30right now and report back to me. They won't let women up there. Weird. And it was a lot of hintai,
- 30:40which is like anime that's pornography. Yeah. But a lot of it was kind of bait. Like there was
- 30:48torsos that you could buy and have sex with and sex dolls and sex pillows. They start with an F. I
- 30:56don't know. But they're like really realistic. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. And there's another kind of common trope
- 31:03in Japanese anime called Moe, which is kind of like your little sister innocent. Oh, please. Oh,
- 31:10yeah. Oh, my god. I'm just an innocent little girl. And there were some smaller torsos up there.
- 31:16Right. And women weren't allowed up there. It's just very much distinct. Like you guys could come
- 31:23down here and those are those two were for the men. And he came back down. He was like, why did you
- 31:30send me? He came back like, yeah, you didn't want to go. I don't need to be up there. Neither.
- 31:37They were right. They were right. But so there's this thing called fan service in anime too,
- 31:44which is kind of where some enemies have it. Some don't. I'm not a huge fan of it. One of the
- 31:51enemies that I made you watch. There's like a slight example of it. And it's oops. I tripped and I
- 31:55fell into this woman's bosom. And now her bra popped off. And oh, God, her skirt flew up. And now I
- 32:00can see your panties. Yeah. And it's fans like that in some anime. Right. So they call it fan service.
- 32:08They're only doing it so that the fans can pop a little a little boner. A certain group of fans.
- 32:13A certain group of fans can pop a boner. There you go. Okay. Mecca, we talked about that's giant robots.
- 32:19Ezekai involves characters from the real world that are being transported to a fantasy world.
- 32:25Many examples of that as sword are online. Slice of life is one of my favorite
- 32:30enemies. I had you watch a slice of life anime. And that's just kind of portrays mundane everyday
- 32:36experiences and relationships to people getting to know each other and going about their lives.
- 32:41Fantasy is set in a fantastical world of magical elements, mythical creatures, epic quests,
- 32:47attack on Titan. Another one that I had you watch the first episode is an example of that.
- 32:53Sports anime. I feel like if Nicole was still with us, I would have had her watch episode of that.
- 32:58And these revolve around sports competitions. Hayuku, sorry if I said that incorrectly.
- 33:04There's these anime is about swimming competitions, cooking competitions,
- 33:09volleyball basketball. Interesting. And then there's one called Haram,
- 33:13which my husband may or may not be a fan of. I like one Haram anime. It's a little
- 33:23it's not the most feminist thing in the world. I was like, is it the meaning of the word Haram?
- 33:29Yes. So it often involves one man who has an assortment of women vying for his attention.
- 33:36Oh, I wonder why he would like that. So where that might happen like that? I'm like,
- 33:40you are going to be happy with me sweet thee. Our Haram sweet thee. Our Haram sweet thee.
- 33:47I was like, you have enough bitches in your life. You got me the dog in the cat.
- 33:51You got toast. You got buffy. You got china. That's what you mean. Sometimes you got Olivia.
- 33:55Listen. Hey, not in that one. Now just in that you're around. Yes. There we go. There we go.
- 34:02All right. So I want to talk about the three anime's that I had you watch.
- 34:06Just the first episode of Let's start with Dragon Ball Z because we said that a little bit.
- 34:12Okay. I will give you a little bit of backstory with Dragon Ball Z at this point.
- 34:18Goku is an alien. He is basically Superman. He is an alien from another planet.
- 34:24And his planet was blown up. And he was sent here with the goal of exterminating humankind.
- 34:34And then he ended up not because he fell in love with humankind. Right. And the guy that you see him
- 34:40fighting Frieza, the purple clearly an alien guy. Yes. Used to kind of enslaved Goku's race.
- 34:49And that's why they're fighting because Goku's standing up against him.
- 34:54So the episode I made her watch by the way is the episode called Finally Transformed where Goku
- 35:01turns super sane for the first time in the entire series.
- 35:05Yeah. So I feel like I've definitely seen the artwork and the cultural love for Dragon Ball Z.
- 35:15It's very much reference in a lot of things. So that was something that I was like,
- 35:20"Okay, I've seen this before." Is this the first episode you've ever watched?
- 35:23Probably all the way through. I think I was watching over my brother's shoulder.
- 35:28So I think it was a little confused. I'm so into it. We're like, who are these people?
- 35:33Obviously, over time, if I was watching it more, I would have picked it up.
- 35:37You picked it that gohan was his son. Yeah. A little kid. A little kid.
- 35:41Yeah. So I thought that was to you English. Yeah, I watched it in English. I followed all of
- 35:46your instructions. The only note that I left for Dragon Ball Z though was why is only that one guy
- 35:53randomly Australian? That was the main thing I took away from me.
- 35:59I guess somebody from Freezes Crew, one of the bad guys, right?
- 36:03Okay, so the episode starts and we think this is such a strong anime trip too, especially in Dragon Ball Z.
- 36:09They're like, "Yeah, we beat Freezes, yeah."
- 36:11Okay, yeah, it's a new year.
- 36:13Yeah.
- 36:13Then it kind of goes into a filler where the Ginn U Force, when they're all on that other planet
- 36:19and they're all of halos, that's the afterlife. They're all dead.
- 36:23I feel like I need a little voice now.
- 36:26It's a condom.
- 36:27I'm so far away from the trip. They're dead. They're dead.
- 36:31Andrew and I tried to watch this episode three years eyes.
- 36:36In the entire time we were like, "Eleven is like, what the fuck is that? Why is that guy
- 36:40have three eyes? Why is he green? Why is he so short?"
- 36:43No, only thing I took away is why is only that guy Australian?
- 36:46I love the ad of everything. After people with halos and separate planets,
- 36:51she's like, "That guy's Australian, he should be."
- 36:53It was very jarring. Everyone felt like an English speaking person, somewhat imitating a Japanese
- 37:03like...
- 37:04Cadence.
- 37:04Yeah.
- 37:05It felt like an American trying to imitate a Japanese accent.
- 37:09That's what it felt like.
- 37:11Then there's just this super strong Australian on the bobby.
- 37:15Oh, you're going to say "Dalphreza."
- 37:19It was jarring.
- 37:20That was my main takeaway, honestly.
- 37:22That's incredible.
- 37:23That's incredible.
- 37:25They think they beat him.
- 37:27Then it kind of cuts to a little filler in the middle, in which I texted Elevian.
- 37:31I was like, "I know the middle is going to get a little goofy."
- 37:33Where they're all fighting in the afterlife on King Kai's planet.
- 37:37You're going to be like, "Why are we watching this?"
- 37:39Yeah.
- 37:40Then, "Oh, shock."
- 37:41Freza's not dead.
- 37:42Were you surprised at all when Piccolo and Krillin were killed?
- 37:47No, I don't think I knew them enough.
- 37:50Well, the little guy who blew up.
- 37:52Yeah.
- 37:53I was just like, "Oh, people are just...
- 37:56Pew-pew."
- 37:56Yeah.
- 37:57People just die, right?
- 37:57Yeah.
- 37:59I feel like if I...
- 38:00I could be persuaded to watch another episode of it, but it didn't hook me.
- 38:06If I was going to try to get you to watch an anime, this would not be the one.
- 38:10But I wanted you to watch it as an example of classic anime.
- 38:14Now I can say I've seen Dragon Ball Z.
- 38:16Yes, you can.
- 38:17Yes.
- 38:18Spoiler alert, the guy that I told you about that was like my anime crush.
- 38:21Okay, so they beat Freza.
- 38:23He actually does it, beaten.
- 38:25He comes back with a lighter.
- 38:28Okay.
- 38:29But he's kind of put together and like,
- 38:32mash of robotic cars and he's pranking Stein to back together.
- 38:36And they're like, "Oh, fuck, he's back."
- 38:37And then the guy that I said is my anime crush comes and beats him in one episode.
- 38:43And so everyone's like, "Who is this man?"
- 38:46Took two whole seasons and you didn't know one.
- 38:49Oh, there's Dragon Ball Z is known for...
- 38:52Two in the next time.
- 38:54Will they beat Freza?
- 38:56You won't know until you two end a dragon ball Z.
- 38:59Okay.
- 39:00So they have a man band guy?
- 39:02Freza is kind of the most classic main bad guy.
- 39:04But there are lots of arcs.
- 39:07So, anime's have arcs.
- 39:09And so one bad guy will be the...
- 39:12the Freza arc and then they'll be the cell arc and then there's the Boo arc.
- 39:15And it's kind of based around like what they're fighting at the time.
- 39:18Yeah.
- 39:19Okay.
- 39:19But he's probably the most iconic villain.
- 39:21Okay.
- 39:21So let's talk about...
- 39:23I'm saving what you told me was your favorite anime for last.
- 39:27Now we're gonna switch total gears and talk about an anime that I kind of consider slice of life.
- 39:33I think it's Herima Jason, but it's called My Dress Up Dowerly.
- 39:38Which the title is so...
- 39:41Okay, there's titles that anime.
- 39:43They're like the one time I joined a podcast with my best friend Olivia.
- 39:46And then we had a fun time sitting on the couch together and that'll be like the title.
- 39:50The whole title.
- 39:51Yeah.
- 39:51Okay.
- 39:51So, My Dress Up Dowerly is about this super popular cute girl in high school.
- 39:57And she falls across the room.
- 40:00She wants to cause play.
- 40:03Yes.
- 40:03Meet.
- 40:04Yes.
- 40:04And she meets this guy who makes eenadoles.
- 40:07Yeah.
- 40:08And those are like Japanese, I guess little...
- 40:11Yeah.
- 40:11Classic doll.
- 40:12Gacious.
- 40:12Thank you.
- 40:13So, the entire show I love because it's just about the two of them forming this unlikely friendship.
- 40:20And she eventually, while I earlier, realized she's in love with him.
- 40:27Yeah.
- 40:27But you can see that.
- 40:28There's a couple other female characters who kind of pop in, but they're not really
- 40:32competition because the show is about the two of them and just their relationship.
- 40:36Yeah.
- 40:36So, I wanna know what you thought about the first episode of My Dress Up Dowerly?
- 40:40I am actually, like, again, and like memes and just like popular culture.
- 40:45I have seen the art of it.
- 40:47So, I feel like I've seen like same with the Titans.
- 40:51And like, I had seen that art before.
- 40:54And so, I was like, okay, I've seen this a little bit.
- 40:57I do think the main character is just such in-sell vibes.
- 41:02The guy.
- 41:03He's the only one.
- 41:04He's the only one.
- 41:05He got bullied once and gave up.
- 41:07And just was like, you know, never gonna talk to another person.
- 41:10It is very dramatic.
- 41:11Yes, very dramatic within it.
- 41:14But yeah, I thought the girl was cute.
- 41:16I was just like, is she so cute?
- 41:17Yeah.
- 41:18But yeah, they definitely had like the traditional like up the skirt kind of thing.
- 41:23And I feel like most of them men in my life who like anime love that stuff.
- 41:30And they like it.
- 41:31So, that's always been like my idea of anime, which, hey, like your freak five, five.
- 41:36You like it, you like it.
- 41:38We had a whole episode about what animated characters shouldn't have been that hot.
- 41:42So, I get it.
- 41:42But it's true.
- 41:43That is true.
- 41:44But yeah, I really liked the art.
- 41:47And that one too, like I just thought her outfits were so cute.
- 41:50I said that the whole time.
- 41:51I was like, Olivia's gonna think she's so pretty.
- 41:53She's got like long nails and her little ombre hair.
- 41:58I was like, Olivia's just gonna think she's so cute.
- 42:00Yeah.
- 42:01Like, I like to say, I mean, because they had great outfits.
- 42:04And it just loved a little Japanese school girl outfit.
- 42:08It's so cute.
- 42:09So cute.
- 42:10So, I don't like a lot of fan service anime.
- 42:13Just because I do think it gets a little...
- 42:15Gross.
- 42:15Yeah, because these characters are often teenagers.
- 42:18Yeah.
- 42:19So, it just, it kind of skirts that line.
- 42:23Like, I don't really want to sexualize a teenager like that.
- 42:26But then again, we watch shit like Riverdale and Usurria.
- 42:30Yeah.
- 42:31And those are actual teenagers or like people portraying actual teenagers.
- 42:36I think it is interesting.
- 42:37Like, one through line is Japanese women are very like childish in anime.
- 42:45Like, where they're very like...
- 42:46And that's like that mow-age.
- 42:47Yeah.
- 42:48Yeah.
- 42:48And so, it is kind of creepier where like, okay, you're 16,
- 42:53but you're kind of like a six year old.
- 42:56Yeah.
- 42:57And personality.
- 42:58So, it kind of feels grosser.
- 43:00I feel like that.
- 43:01And there's this anime trope too where it's like,
- 43:04oh, she has the body of a 12 year old,
- 43:06but she's actually a 200 year old fairy princess demon.
- 43:11It's not so convenient.
- 43:13Exactly.
- 43:14Isn't that so convenient?
- 43:15Yeah.
- 43:16Oh, she's technically of age, but no, she's got the body and the personality.
- 43:21And she's going to the sixth grade.
- 43:23Like, that kind of stuff, I can't watch.
- 43:26And I'm not shaming if this is the kind of anime that anybody listening watches.
- 43:30It's just not your cup of tea.
- 43:32My cup of tea.
- 43:33And there are, like, I love my dress up, darling.
- 43:35And there is that point where she turns around and her skirt flies up
- 43:38and you see her panties.
- 43:39And then he gets like, oh, god.
- 43:41Yeah.
- 43:41The noise that he makes, again, she made me...
- 43:45She told me to listen to this one with...
- 43:47In Japanese, with English subtitles.
- 43:49I don't like most anime's subbed, except for Dragon Balls, maybe.
- 43:52I like dubbed it.
- 43:54And they're just the parts where...
- 43:56Oh, like he really goes...
- 43:59And just like that, listeners.
- 44:03And it was...
- 44:04It was drawing.
- 44:06And just like the Australian, it was drawing.
- 44:08The part where his little, he and it all had flies across the room.
- 44:11And she picks up, she goes, what the hell?
- 44:14And then she picks up, she's like, that's so cool.
- 44:16He thinks she's about to rip into him, right?
- 44:18And he's...
- 44:19Oh my god, like that, exactly.
- 44:23I was just like, uh-oh, okay.
- 44:24If a man in real life ever made that noise in front of me,
- 44:27immediate it.
- 44:28I'm sorry.
- 44:30He just looks at you.
- 44:31You're just like, you're hard now.
- 44:33Yeah, I just...
- 44:35You're my friend.
- 44:35You just...
- 44:36She's in your pants.
- 44:37Making eye contact.
- 44:38You and I are friends.
- 44:40Uh, and that's...
- 44:41Holy...
- 44:42I'm gonna just...
- 44:44For my jawline, whatever I see you.
- 44:46It's all she's gonna do in Mexico.
- 44:47Instead of complimenting your outfit,
- 44:49you're gonna come out of like the bathroom in Mexico,
- 44:51like looking cute.
- 44:52And I'm just gonna go, "Hoh!"
- 44:53"Hoh!"
- 44:54"Hoh!"
- 44:55"Hoh!"
- 44:56"Hoh!"
- 44:58As opposed to what you already do.
- 44:59Which is that.
- 45:00Which is...
- 45:01All of these are noises and the...
- 45:05These are very good in my dress of darling.
- 45:08My dress of darling.
- 45:09Yes, these are all my dresses of darling noises.
- 45:11Yeah.
- 45:11I love this show.
- 45:12She ends up falling in love with him
- 45:15at the point that we're at right now.
- 45:16I should also...
- 45:17I would be remiss not to mention
- 45:19that a lot of anime is
- 45:21are based off of manga.
- 45:23Yeah, so it's essentially like a Japanese comic book.
- 45:26Yes.
- 45:26Right, so...
- 45:27You can tell in the way that it's created.
- 45:29So if you really want to,
- 45:31it's kind of like in house of the Game of Dragons throne.
- 45:34You know what's about to come
- 45:36because you've read off the books, right?
- 45:38A lot of these things.
- 45:39Andrew has read the manga,
- 45:41so he knows what's about to come.
- 45:42But he doesn't spoil it for me.
- 45:44Oh, that's gonna happen.
- 45:44And sometimes I'll look it up.
- 45:47But a lot of...
- 45:48I would say most anime is
- 45:50are based off of manga.
- 45:51Which are very popular in Japan.
- 45:54And are incredible.
- 45:56The artworks insane.
- 45:57A lot of them are in black and white
- 45:59and so it's really cool to see them...
- 46:01Put into technical ones.
- 46:02Exactly.
- 46:03Technical.
- 46:05Yeah.
- 46:06Yeah.
- 46:06And in light action with the voices and things like that.
- 46:09So...
- 46:10And then there are things...
- 46:11That aren't really popular in anime anymore
- 46:14that are called filler episodes,
- 46:15which I guess a lot of shows have, right?
- 46:17But imagine if you...
- 46:19a popular anime bleach comes to mind.
- 46:23So you're animating all of this manga,
- 46:25all of this comic book.
- 46:26And let's say you get up to the point
- 46:28with your animation where you meet the manga.
- 46:30And the manga is...
- 46:32Like you meet up to each other.
- 46:34Yeah.
- 46:34Then you're like, "Well, shit,
- 46:36we still have a whole five more episodes
- 46:38we have to produce, do you?"
- 46:40And then you think, "Ah, let's just do our own things."
- 46:42That's where the famous bathing suit episode comes into play.
- 46:45Okay.
- 46:46A lot of anime's have...
- 46:47Let's go to the beach episode.
- 46:50Which has nothing to do with the plot.
- 46:51It's just your excuse to see all of your favorite characters
- 46:54in bathing suits.
- 46:56Okay.
- 46:56That's good to know.
- 46:57Dragon Ball Sea has a...
- 46:59Let's learn to play baseball episode.
- 47:01Okay.
- 47:01Like, toilet?
- 47:03Honestly, it's like the toilet honestly.
- 47:05It's amazing.
- 47:06We just need some mues playing in the background.
- 47:12If no one has done that,
- 47:14somebody please put the Dragon Ball Sea baseball episode
- 47:17to Supermassive Black all by mues.
- 47:19I'm sure it is on TikTok somewhere.
- 47:23It needs to be...
- 47:23If not, we'll do it.
- 47:24There's an episode of Dragon Ball Sea
- 47:26where they get their driver's licenses
- 47:28because they're from another planet.
- 47:29And their wives demand that they get their driver's license.
- 47:32Sweet little alien babies trying their episodes.
- 47:36They're probably in the law.
- 47:36They're law-binding aliens.
- 47:37They're saying frying.
- 47:38They're frying.
- 47:39They're law-binding aliens.
- 47:40They're law-binding alien-green citizens.
- 47:43Yeah, there you go.
- 47:44Finally, I want to talk about
- 47:46out of the three anime's that I asked you to watch.
- 47:48Okay.
- 47:48You watched the first episode of Attack on Titan
- 47:51and you said it was your favorite out of the three, right?
- 47:53Yes, correct.
- 47:54Tell me your thoughts on Attack on Titan.
- 47:56Okay.
- 47:58She goes, that's not saying much, Shonda.
- 48:00Yeah, so I did like this the most out of the three that I watched.
- 48:05I do need to just read you my notes.
- 48:07Oh, I got pleased.
- 48:08Please.
- 48:09After my dress up trailing or attack on Titan.
- 48:11For Attack on Titans.
- 48:13And Titan.
- 48:15I know there's many Titans.
- 48:16Attack on Titan.
- 48:17There we go.
- 48:18Okay.
- 48:19Don't shoot me.
- 48:20Anime people.
- 48:21I will.
- 48:21Love that.
- 48:22So my notes are in rapid succession.
- 48:26Not the mom going full Bambi's mom,
- 48:30but ripped in half.
- 48:31That was my first name.
- 48:33I'm spoiler?
- 48:34No one has watched the first episode of Attack on Titan,
- 48:36but it's been up for many years.
- 48:38If you made it this far, we've probably already ruined
- 48:40like five shows for you.
- 48:41So we're sorry.
- 48:42I can walk you about like the 80s, so that's fine.
- 48:44Okay, there we go.
- 48:45Yeah.
- 48:46Second note, Titans had some donk.
- 48:49The Titans are.
- 48:51They really are.
- 48:53They were looking good.
- 48:54I was kind of like they don't have genitals though.
- 48:56They're just kind of like smooth kindles.
- 48:58Oh, okay.
- 48:59Did you not look at the Titan crossures?
- 49:00No, I was I was struck on the butt.
- 49:02Oh, yeah, they're just good.
- 49:03Dolls, they're smooth.
- 49:04I was like someone in animation.
- 49:06Really, really perfected that one.
- 49:08Some of the Titans can get it.
- 49:10Yeah.
- 49:11Yeah.
- 49:11My next note was me cause a just kept giving me my house in Spanish.
- 49:16It took me a while to get over.
- 49:17Mikasa.
- 49:19Yeah.
- 49:20But it's me.
- 49:22Mikasa is suka.
- 49:23Mikasa is best girl.
- 49:28Okay, which means yes.
- 49:30I like her character.
- 49:31Best girl is like if you watch an anime and you're like,
- 49:34she's the best woman of all.
- 49:36She's mine.
- 49:37I love her.
- 49:38Protect her all costs basically.
- 49:40Mikasa is best girl.
- 49:41And there's also best boy.
- 49:42Yeah.
- 49:43Mikasa the character and my house.
- 49:45Your house is incredible.
- 49:46Mikasa as a person.
- 49:48No, but I just like,
- 49:49I really kept just like hearing that in my mind.
- 49:52Do they have any hear me cause?
- 49:53To be fair, I think it's more like Mikasa.
- 49:56Mikasa.
- 49:56But the way that they say it in the
- 49:59in the Japanese version sounds like Mikasa.
- 50:03It sounds like Mikasa.
- 50:04So I was like, it took me a while to get over it.
- 50:07But yeah, that one that like
- 50:09kills mom, real creepy looking.
- 50:12Yes.
- 50:12Real creepy looking.
- 50:13Okay, so Attack on Titan is a lot of people will argue
- 50:17that it is the best anime of all time.
- 50:20Yeah.
- 50:20You will get in it's known as like the goat kind of, right?
- 50:24People get into Lebron and Kobe.
- 50:26Yeah.
- 50:27I definitely see it.
- 50:27I've definitely seen the artwork before.
- 50:30I've seen both characters, both of the little boy and the Mikasa.
- 50:34Yes.
- 50:35And I really, I liked that the most.
- 50:37I think the story was the most interesting
- 50:39that I wanted to continue.
- 50:41I did start with that one.
- 50:43Okay.
- 50:43So then I had to like go into the other two.
- 50:46Interesting.
- 50:46Which may have, you know, made me less interested in the other ones.
- 50:50Because I was kind of like, oh well, I kind of want to know what happens.
- 50:53And that one.
- 50:53Okay.
- 50:53And the beginning was was a little slow for me.
- 50:57Yeah.
- 50:58But once the Titans came, I was like, okay, attack on Titan is insane.
- 51:02Because it's this kind of show where you think it's going to go one way.
- 51:05And then by the end of it, it kind of becomes like a political drama.
- 51:09It's about boring nations.
- 51:11And it gets a little convoluted at the end.
- 51:15Yeah.
- 51:15And you get to watch Aaron, the main character who is a little kid,
- 51:19grow up and by the end of the series, he's an adult.
- 51:21Oh, okay.
- 51:22Because he's kind of annoying.
- 51:23Mm-hmm.
- 51:24Yeah.
- 51:24He's annoying.
- 51:25He's like, I want it.
- 51:26And it starts and you think it's going to be a show-nice, right?
- 51:29Yes.
- 51:29So what I told you about show-nice is it's a, based on usually a little boy character.
- 51:34He's like, I'm going to be the most powerful of them all.
- 51:36And he's like, I want to join the people who fight the Titans.
- 51:40So then he watched his mom get ridden, ripped in half.
- 51:43And then it's, yeah.
- 51:44This anime is violent.
- 51:46Yeah.
- 51:46It's intense.
- 51:47People die when you don't expect them to.
- 51:51And love that.
- 51:53People for betray other characters when you don't expect them to.
- 51:57And it stays very serious in its animation style.
- 52:01So you might have noticed a little bit in like Dragon Ball Z
- 52:04and maybe on my dress up darling where they get a little goofy and their eyes get big
- 52:08and they get a little silly.
- 52:09Yeah.
- 52:09A tech and Titan know.
- 52:11It's just straight up drama, the entire series.
- 52:13Yeah.
- 52:14I think I would like that more.
- 52:15I think you might.
- 52:17You should watch the rest of it.
- 52:19Yeah.
- 52:19It's insane.
- 52:20I might have to go English dub though.
- 52:23Let me try it because I hate subtitles like on anything.
- 52:28I'm not going to make fun of me.
- 52:29So I was watching subtitles.
- 52:31I'm like, turn it off.
- 52:32I can't pay attention.
- 52:33Like, I can't do both.
- 52:35I don't know what's wrong with my eyes.
- 52:37I can't.
- 52:38You're like that.
- 52:39What's that movie where she is with the guy in the wheelchair?
- 52:43Me before you.
- 52:44There it is.
- 52:45And she's like, I don't like.
- 52:47Oh, I hate it.
- 52:48I hate it.
- 52:49I hate subtitles, especially like if it's English speaking show.
- 52:54Everything we watch for anime except for Dragon Ball Z
- 52:57because I prefer the Dragon Ball Z voice actors in English.
- 53:01We watch in Japanese.
- 53:02Yeah.
- 53:02And people like anime fans will be really like,
- 53:05yeah, sub versus dub.
- 53:07Yeah.
- 53:07I don't care as long as you're enjoying yourself.
- 53:09Yeah.
- 53:10And the attack on Titan like English dub is not bad.
- 53:13Okay.
- 53:13That's not bad.
- 53:14Yeah.
- 53:15Because sometimes they're like really bad.
- 53:16Like even on Netflix when it's like,
- 53:19I'll watch some like German shows.
- 53:21Even if the dub is terrible because German and like English speaking words
- 53:25do not look the same at all.
- 53:27I'll still just watch it in English and like get over it.
- 53:30But I think that's just a preference thing to watch it in English.
- 53:34But I listen to the list and I followed it.
- 53:37I am so like impressed that you actually went through this
- 53:41and that you didn't hate them and come in
- 53:43being like, "Shotta, what the fuck did you make me watch?"
- 53:46I tried to choose a classic one for you.
- 53:50And I guess I should have had you watch Dragon Ball Z first
- 53:53and then attack on Titans.
- 53:54You could see where the evolution of like action anime
- 53:58was right.
- 53:58Like how far the animation has come.
- 54:01Yeah.
- 54:02It's just it's insane.
- 54:03That makes sense.
- 54:04So you said that you and Andrew had a very long and heated debate
- 54:09on which ones to recommend to me.
- 54:11So how did you decide on the three?
- 54:14So he wasn't sure that I should recommend the
- 54:17Goku going Super Saiyan episode for you.
- 54:19But what I said is I want Olivia to watch
- 54:22an episode of classic anime that is something iconic that happens.
- 54:27And I feel like when I think of iconic anime
- 54:29Goku going Super Saiyan for the first time ever
- 54:32is a media loop came to mind.
- 54:34So Super Saiyan he does because his friend is killed in front of him.
- 54:39Like both of his best friends are killed in front of him.
- 54:41Yeah.
- 54:41And he's just so rage and passionful.
- 54:44You could probably tell even that was your first episode.
- 54:47The dude is pissed.
- 54:48Yeah.
- 54:49And he's like, "HUH!"
- 54:50And then he goes to this next form.
- 54:53Right?
- 54:53And so I wanted you to watch something iconic like that.
- 54:56My dress up Jarling I chose because I wanted you to watch
- 55:01an anime that was like a slice of life romance.
- 55:04But I didn't want you to watch a classic
- 55:07harem
- 55:08upskirt I fell into your tits.
- 55:11Because that's not what I like.
- 55:13Yeah.
- 55:13And I know you well enough to be like,
- 55:16you think why?
- 55:16I don't like that.
- 55:17Yeah.
- 55:17This is disgusting.
- 55:18Just about to horny people.
- 55:21There is this anime that I tried to get through.
- 55:24Called Food Wars.
- 55:26And it's essentially a cooking competition show.
- 55:30I was just like the Gordon Ramsay one.
- 55:32Kind of.
- 55:33I mean, it's these students who are going to cooking college.
- 55:36A lot of anime is kind of revolving around.
- 55:38They're going to magic college.
- 55:39They're all stuck in a boarding school.
- 55:41Yes.
- 55:41They're going to a hero college,
- 55:43which is one of my favorite ones,
- 55:44my hero academia.
- 55:46But that's hero high school.
- 55:47Or they're going to wizard school.
- 55:50This one is cooking school.
- 55:52Okay.
- 55:53But the lead animator on this anime
- 55:56also used to write in time.
- 55:58No.
- 55:59So we really went for it.
- 56:00We went for it.
- 56:01So let's just say when the characters try food
- 56:05that they really like,
- 56:06they essentially reach their piticle.
- 56:10Yes.
- 56:10They come to a crescendo.
- 56:13They think they're chandelier and then they're close.
- 56:15Yeah.
- 56:16And it's a lot of the...
- 56:17Yeah.
- 56:19Yeah.
- 56:19And I was like, I love you.
- 56:20It's not going to want to watch these two natures coming.
- 56:23I think they ate good pasta.
- 56:25I mean, I might as a gluten free person.
- 56:27I feel that deeply.
- 56:29I love you.
- 56:30I know what I might...
- 56:32I'd probably die right after, but you know, we don't know.
- 56:35I don't know.
- 56:35When we were in California,
- 56:36you took your three-bred...
- 56:37Benadrill, so you could have that.
- 56:39What was that dish?
- 56:40I had like a breadcrumbs.
- 56:43I still like...
- 56:44Took the breadcrumbs off of me.
- 56:46But it was oysters or aquafelettes.
- 56:47Yeah.
- 56:48And then her clothes flew off like in food wars.
- 56:51And she went, "Aww!"
- 56:53"Simpide!"
- 56:54All the noises.
- 56:55I love it.
- 56:56I live here wearing public juice.
- 56:58Yeah.
- 56:59And then attack on Titan.
- 57:02It's just...
- 57:03It's on many lists of like, you want to get your friend to watch anime?
- 57:07The attack on Titan is what they're kind of...
- 57:10That's what you show with them.
- 57:11I like a complex story.
- 57:13And like a mystery that you've got to solve.
- 57:16So...
- 57:17So what I'm going to recommend to you right now is an anime.
- 57:20I almost asked you to watch too, but then...
- 57:22It's called Erased.
- 57:25It's a mystery drama.
- 57:27And it gets a little dark at points,
- 57:31but it takes...
- 57:31It's very serious.
- 57:33There's no goofiness in there at all.
- 57:35But it's this...
- 57:36Young adult.
- 57:37I also like anime's that are adult characters,
- 57:39because a lot of them are teenagers,
- 57:41which is kind of funny.
- 57:42And then they're shredded out of their minds.
- 57:43Yeah.
- 57:44And I'm like, "How old is this kid supposed to be?"
- 57:4614.
- 57:47All right, chill.
- 57:48He's got like a 12-bag.
- 57:49He's got like a full-grown beard.
- 57:51Literally, and all the women have just like the most...
- 57:54a ray-wrapped...
- 57:55...rache-rache that don't move.
- 57:57They move independently from their bodies.
- 58:00Yeah.
- 58:00And I'm just jumping up and down.
- 58:02And I'll literally be like, "Andre, that's not how breasts work."
- 58:04It's not.
- 58:05No.
- 58:05She moves over here and her tits are over there.
- 58:09That's not...
- 58:10Anyway, Erased is incredible.
- 58:13It's this young adult who...
- 58:15It kind of reminds me of Butterfly Effect
- 58:17that Ash and Kuchil movie, where he realizes
- 58:20that he can kind of like go back into his past bodies
- 58:23and affect things that happen to him.
- 58:25Oh, I like that.
- 58:26And he leaves back into a point in time
- 58:27where he remembers in his neighborhood
- 58:30there was a lot of kids going missing.
- 58:32But now that he has the mind of an adult,
- 58:35he's like, "I can...
- 58:36I don't know.
- 58:37Maybe I can figure out why all these kids went missing
- 58:39in my neighborhood."
- 58:40Oh, that sounds good to me.
- 58:41It's insane.
- 58:42It's one of the few enemies I've ride watching.
- 58:45It's so good.
- 58:46And there is a live action adaptation,
- 58:47but I would recommend anime.
- 58:49Okay.
- 58:50Yeah, I like that.
- 58:51I like that.
- 58:52I love the Butterfly Effect.
- 58:54It's such a good movie.
- 58:55What an underrated...
- 58:56It really is, but it's so good.
- 58:58I love it.
- 58:59That's a good hungover film, too.
- 59:03I feel like...
- 59:03Talked about this before,
- 59:04because we talked about the alternate ending
- 59:06where he kills himself in the womb.
- 59:07Yeah.
- 59:08Favorite.
- 59:12Yeah.
- 59:12Amazing.
- 59:13No notes.
- 59:14No notes.
- 59:15A cell abort.
- 59:16It's fine.
- 59:17All right.
- 59:20Well, what was it called?
- 59:21That one's called Erased.
- 59:22Okay.
- 59:23And it's on Crunchyroll?
- 59:24Yes.
- 59:25You have Crunchyroll, baby.
- 59:27Not on my Fire TV.
- 59:28I'm gonna do it now.
- 59:29It's the password.
- 59:30I mean, I won't say what I'm gonna change it to.
- 59:32Oh, that's good.
- 59:33Yeah.
- 59:34Everyone's vlogging into our Crunchyroll.
- 59:36The Germans.
- 59:36No scot damn Germans.
- 59:39I love our German fans, Lisa.
- 59:40They're just still in the Crunchyroll, man.
- 59:43Y'all like our anime.
- 59:45Yeah.
- 59:46So, yeah, I would recommend that.
- 59:48And I would also recommend you keep going
- 59:50with Attack on Titan, even if you do the English version.
- 59:52Yeah.
- 59:53So I have to.
- 59:53That might give me through it.
