- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are beginning Ephesians
- 0:18chapter 6, the final chapter in this great book of scripture.
- 0:22And today we're going to be learning about the word obey.
- 0:26And if you are like me, you are an adult, which I think is the
- 0:31majority of the people listening to Tabernacle talk.
- 0:33If you are a kid or teen who listens to Tabernacle talk,
- 0:38honestly, I'm super impressed. I don't know.
- 0:42I don't know if podcast had really come out by the time that
- 0:46I was maybe late teens podcast started to come out, but I don't
- 0:50think I was listening to Bible study podcast.
- 0:51So if you are a teen or a kid listening, thanks for being here
- 0:56and I hope that you encourage or I hope that you continue in a
- 1:00lifelong pursuit of knowing God through His Word.
- 1:04Today we're going to be learning about obeying.
- 1:07And if you're an adult like me, you probably don't have a great
- 1:11relationship with the word obey anymore.
- 1:13We often don't hear it. We would maybe hear it more in
- 1:19the phrase, do what you're told or just do what I asked you to.
- 1:25That might be how we often receive things that we're
- 1:29supposed to do from others. But today we're going to look at
- 1:342:00, if you will, groups of people that are called to obey.
- 1:40So last episode we looked at submission, which is make
- 1:44someone else's mission your mission.
- 1:46You're on their team. You're not fighting against
- 1:49them, but you're both on the same side.
- 1:53It's how you view the relationship.
- 1:55In today's episode, we're going to be looking strictly at do
- 2:01what they ask you to do, and here is why.
- 2:05And then there's actually for both of these people that are
- 2:09called to obey, there's a a different call for those that
- 2:15are in charge of them, for those that have authority over the
- 2:19obeyers, they have some responsibilities too.
- 2:22And so we're going to look at that.
- 2:24It is children and fathers. And then we have slaves or
- 2:29servants, employees, if you will, and employers.
- 2:33And so we're going to look at that both in the home and in the
- 2:36workplace. What are God's expectations for
- 2:39you and for me? Let's dive right in.
- 2:41Children, obey your parents in the Lord, because this is right.
- 2:48And then here he quotes from the 10 commandments.
- 2:50Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment
- 2:53with a promise. And here he says what that
- 2:56promise was from the Old Testament, so that it may go
- 2:59well with you and that you may have a long life in the land.
- 3:04Fathers, don't stir up anger in your children, but bring them up
- 3:10in the training and instruction of the Lord.
- 3:14Slaves, obey your human masters with fear and trembling in the
- 3:18sincerity of your heart, as you would Christ.
- 3:21Don't work only while being watched as people pleasers, but
- 3:25as slaves of Christ do God's will from the heart.
- 3:30Serve with a good attitude as to the Lord and not to people,
- 3:34knowing that whatever good each one does, slave or free, he will
- 3:40receive this back from the Lord and masters.
- 3:43Treat your slaves the same way without threatening them,
- 3:48because you know that both their master and yours is in heaven
- 3:52and there is no favoritism with him.
- 3:57Well, I love these verses. What?
- 3:59We're going to get started right away here with children first.
- 4:03And it says your children obey your parents in the Lord,
- 4:07because this is right. It is right to obey your
- 4:12parents. And here he tells them obey your
- 4:14parents in the Lord. So if your parent tells you to
- 4:18become a pickpocket, if your parent tells you to do an
- 4:24inappropriate or an evil action, that is not something that you
- 4:27should follow. That would be something, even if
- 4:30it causes that there to be blowback on you.
- 4:34Don't just do evil and say, well, someone else told me to do
- 4:38the evil and so I just went along with it.
- 4:39No, no, no, for the Lord, for his sake, for the holiness that
- 4:46is in you because the Holy Spirit of God lives within you.
- 4:50Don't participate in evil, but as far as it is not against
- 4:57anything directly in Scripture, obey your parents.
- 5:01And you could try and say, well, listen, they want me to, you
- 5:05know, go to bed at 9:00 and I just really want to read more of
- 5:11the Bible at 9:00. And they, they don't have a time
- 5:15that I, you know, I could wake up a little earlier in the
- 5:19morning and read my Bible, but I, I'm just going to kind of
- 5:23say, no, I, this is against the Bible or something like, oh,
- 5:28they're stirring up anger in me. And so therefore I don't have to
- 5:31obey what they have to say. No, absolutely not.
- 5:34If you are under, if you're under the age of 18, you are
- 5:39within your parents care in America, I think, I think in
- 5:44Canada it might be 16. Maybe in some other nations
- 5:47around the world the the number is different.
- 5:49But if you're here in America, if you are 17 and younger, obey
- 5:54your parents. What they ask you to do, do it.
- 5:58Unless it directly violates a clear command in scripture.
- 6:03You need to obey your parents. Why?
- 6:05Is it because they are smarter than you?
- 6:08That's not the reason Paul gives.
- 6:10Is it because they're holier than you?
- 6:12That's not the reason Paul gives either.
- 6:13He says obey your parents because this is right.
- 6:18It is good to do. It is something that mirrors the
- 6:22holiness of Jesus, that he obeyed his parents.
- 6:25You can even think back to the story in Luke chapter 2.
- 6:30Jesus is 12 years old. Him and all of his extended
- 6:33family. They go to Jerusalem for one of
- 6:36the feasts that's there and they leave.
- 6:41They don't recognize that they have left Jesus behind.
- 6:44They don't find him for three days or they don't realize that
- 6:47he's missing for three days. They go, Oh no.
- 6:51They head back to Jerusalem and they find him in the temple
- 6:54teaching astonishing the scribes that are there, as I'm certain
- 6:59Jesus would always do. This is just such a short sight
- 7:02note. I can't imagine what teenage
- 7:06Jesus would have been like. Like perfect holy God in a
- 7:10teenage body. I assume his voice cracked as he
- 7:15gained the voice of a man. I'm certain that he went through
- 7:20many of the difficulties in in physical changes that you and I
- 7:25would go through days where he was like, man, I really stink.
- 7:30Those things that just aren't they aren't sin.
- 7:33It's just a part of being human that Jesus went through.
- 7:37And so I can imagine little, maybe pimply 12 year old Jesus
- 7:43that is there in the temple and with the wisdom of God
- 7:47Incarnate, he is teaching these grown men things about the
- 7:53scriptures. And I, I would love to, I don't
- 7:56know if God does this, but I would love to see an instant
- 7:59replay of that in heaven, to know what, what that sounded
- 8:03like, what the conversation was, what Jesus was telling them.
- 8:06And I, I just think that'd be amazing.
- 8:08But Jesus is there. He's teaching in the temple the,
- 8:12his, his mother comes and, and his, if you will, his
- 8:16stepfather, Joseph, Mary's husband.
- 8:19And they're like, listen, we've been looking all over for you.
- 8:23And he tells them, didn't you know that I needed to be about
- 8:27my father's business? He says, I came here for a
- 8:30mission, I'm doing the mission right now.
- 8:34And they said, no, no, no, come back with us, It says, and he
- 8:37listened to their voice. He obeyed them.
- 8:39He submitted himself to them. OK, were Mary or Joseph holier
- 8:45than Jesus? Absolutely not.
- 8:47Did they have God's plan in mind for him at that moment or was it
- 8:51just going by their understanding?
- 8:53Well, it was just by their understanding, because Jesus
- 8:55says I am doing what the Father wants me to do, and yet Jesus
- 9:01obeyed his parents. You are not holier than Jesus.
- 9:05You are not more intelligent than Jesus.
- 9:08And so you are called as a child or teen to obey your parents in
- 9:13the Lord because this is right. Jesus modeled that for you.
- 9:17So follow his example. All right, Any parents that had
- 9:20a kid watching now. Oh, actually, no.
- 9:23There's one more promise for you in verses 2 and three before we
- 9:26get to the parents end of this honor your father and mother
- 9:31here to honor. Look in this word up.
- 9:33This is the Greek word tomato. It is to estimate, to value, to
- 9:38have high regard for, to honor that you value your parents.
- 9:44You don't view them as worthless.
- 9:46You don't view them as a hindrance to your existence, if
- 9:52you will. They are the reason for your
- 9:54existence and so love them, care for them, show them respect, put
- 9:59a high price on their words and their instructions.
- 10:04I can tell you someone that's been out of the house now for
- 10:08man. I left for college 11 years ago,
- 10:1210-11 years ago. I miss my parents and I miss
- 10:16being able to have them around. I miss when I didn't have to
- 10:19make every decision and when I wasn't responsible for putting
- 10:22food on the table. And I'm thankful for the parents
- 10:25that I had. You will like you.
- 10:27I know you that you do not have perfect parents because
- 10:32literally no one has ever had a perfect parent because Jesus
- 10:36never became an earthly parent there.
- 10:39Certainly we have a heavenly Father who is perfect.
- 10:42So you don't have a perfect parent, but be thankful for who
- 10:45God gave you. As your parents value them,
- 10:48honor them, he says, which is the first commandment with
- 10:51promise that as you place importance and value on what
- 10:54your parents, on who they are and on the instructions that
- 10:57they give to you, the way that they are raising you, He says as
- 11:01you do that it may go well with you and you may have a long life
- 11:07in the land here. This is not an absolute all of
- 11:10the time. If a person dies young, it's not
- 11:14that they were disobedient to their parents.
- 11:17No, they might be a great child or could just be a loss of life
- 11:22tragically happened very, very often in childhood, especially
- 11:27in the early world and there in the 1st century.
- 11:31But what's being said here is you follow the advice of godly
- 11:35people, you're not going to end up you know, dead of alcohol
- 11:39poisoning. You follow your parents advice.
- 11:42You're not going to end up in a gang and die in violence.
- 11:47You're not going to die, you know, by being crucified because
- 11:51you stole stuff or because you took part in a rebellious,
- 11:55violent uprising. Those kinds of things is what's
- 11:58in view. You won't die because you've
- 12:01done stupid stuff. This is not saying here's just a
- 12:04guarantee you obey your parents and you'll live to 708090 years
- 12:09old. That's not what's being said
- 12:11here, so just be aware of that. So honor your father and mother,
- 12:15place value on them, obey them. All right, dads, you're up
- 12:18fathers. And technically this goes from
- 12:20others as well. He says fathers, don't stir up
- 12:24anger in your children, but bring them up in the training
- 12:29and instruction of the Lord. Dads have a way about them in
- 12:36which they can cause there to be active resentment.
- 12:41That wrong can be done to kids through the way that they're
- 12:46treated, if they're treated unjustly or unfairly, if they're
- 12:49abused verbally or emotionally or physically.
- 12:53In some instances, and even, God forbid, some, I'm sexually.
- 12:57So fathers, don't stir up anger in your children.
- 13:02Don't do them wrong. Treat them rightly and kindly.
- 13:07What you want to stir up in them is godliness and love and
- 13:12kindness and the fruit of the Spirit.
- 13:14That is what you are to stir up into your children.
- 13:18So treat them right. They are worth being treated
- 13:22well just as you treat your wife well because she is 1 flesh with
- 13:26you. That you are caring for yourself
- 13:29as you meet each of her needs in every aspect of her life.
- 13:34That in the same way, we're in a slightly different way for your
- 13:38kids. You are called to treat them
- 13:41well. They are not your punching bag.
- 13:44They are not an annoyance to you or some hindrance to your life.
- 13:50God forbid may we ever treat our kids as though they are an
- 13:54annoyance to us. Now I'll say sometimes they can
- 13:59be annoying. You know, they can make
- 14:01repetitive sounds and be silly and and this and that, but may
- 14:06they never feel like dad doesn't want me around.
- 14:10Dad doesn't want anything to do with me.
- 14:12Dad hurts me. I don't want to go talk to him
- 14:15because I know I'm going to be in pain, whether emotionally or
- 14:20physically, as a result of being around him.
- 14:23That has been a scourge on Christianity.
- 14:27And as you look even over the last 100 years as people have
- 14:31looked again and again at the way in which quote, UN quote,
- 14:37Christian male leadership has been portrayed.
- 14:42Very often it's abused to say, well, I'm the head of the house
- 14:46and the wife needs to submit, by which I mean obey and the kids
- 14:50need to obey. But there's no ownership of I
- 14:55have to treat my wife as good as I treat myself.
- 15:01I have to stir up good things in my kid, raising them in the
- 15:05training and instruction of the Lord that I am discipling them.
- 15:10Now, whether they become a whether they become a John the
- 15:15Apostle kind of disciple who just follows Jesus.
- 15:17He's always there. He's at the foot of the cross,
- 15:20whether it's a Peter that has been discipled and then you know
- 15:25a moment comes and he leaves Jesus for a time but ends up
- 15:29coming back to Christ, or whether it's a Judas that leaves
- 15:33and never returns to relationship with Jesus.
- 15:36Your call is to train them in. Your job is to bring them up in
- 15:40the training and instruction of the Lord.
- 15:44So disciple them. Don't discourage them, don't
- 15:47dishearten them, don't stir up anger in them by treating them
- 15:52badly. Much more could be said.
- 15:56That's where I'll stop for today.
- 15:58Verse #5 Then we have slaves and masters.
- 16:00So slaves. And there's some dynamics here
- 16:04about 1st century Roman household rules that this will
- 16:11likely not map on perfectly to the employee employer
- 16:15relationship today. But I think there's some lasting
- 16:18principles that we can still absorb.
- 16:21So he says, slaves, obey your human masters with fear and
- 16:25trembling. That's with that respect you.
- 16:29You're not flipping about your boss.
- 16:30You actually care about him or her, and you're not viewing them
- 16:36as an annoyance. They are someone with authority
- 16:40and so respect is granted to them.
- 16:41So obey your human masters with fear and trembling in the
- 16:45sincerity of your heart, as you would Christ.
- 16:48So I'm working as hard for Jim or Steve or Bill, I'm working as
- 16:55hard for them, my boss in my company, as I would for Jesus.
- 17:03That if Jesus says I want you to make the sale, you're like,
- 17:07yeah, we're right on that, Jesus.
- 17:09And you go and you do it. Or you could have, you know,
- 17:12Jesus says, I want you to, you know, make this hamburger and
- 17:18you're like for, you know, for me and you go, yes, of course,
- 17:21Lord, this is going to be the best hamburger you've ever had
- 17:24that you do your job like you're doing it for Jesus.
- 17:27Do you do your job like you are doing it for Jesus?
- 17:31I'll tell you as a pastor, I don't have AI, don't have an
- 17:37employer, if you will. I don't have a boss now,
- 17:41certainly with the rest of the elders all together, we oversee
- 17:46the church staff and so there's an element of accountability
- 17:49that I have with them. But no one's like all right
- 17:52Brian, you know, here's 7 tasks that I want you to get done
- 17:56today. And here's these, you know,
- 17:58numbers that I need by the end of the week, etcetera, etcetera.
- 18:01A lot of what I'm doing, if you will, is self self-paced.
- 18:05I'm, if you will, self-employed. Also can be a joke on my last
- 18:10name, Brian Self. So I'm self-employed, but what
- 18:15always startles me, what gives me pause is I am working for
- 18:22Christ, for the Lord, and I'm supported by God's people.
- 18:27And so I'm, I would much rather people say something like, man,
- 18:35you work a lot, you work, you know, I'd rather have you work
- 18:38too much rather than he. Does he do anything?
- 18:42I never want to be a lazy pastor.
- 18:46And the truth is for you, you're not called to be a lazy worker.
- 18:50You are called to work hard because you are working for
- 18:54Jesus. So you genuinely respect and do
- 18:58your job for your employer like Jesus asked you to do it and
- 19:03like Jesus is your boss. And then verse 6 he says don't
- 19:06work only while being watched as people pleasers, but as slaves
- 19:11of Christ. Do God's will from your heart
- 19:14that you don't have to have someone watching over you.
- 19:17The boss doesn't have to be in the room for you to do your best
- 19:20work. You're always doing your best
- 19:22work because Jesus is watching over you and he wants you to do
- 19:27God's will from your heart, which in this instance is do the
- 19:31job that you've been given. And then verse 7, not just do
- 19:34it, not just respect your human employer, not just do it
- 19:39genuinely from the heart, doing it for Jesus, but he says serve
- 19:42with a good attitude as to the Lord and not to people that the
- 19:48way that you work needs to not be a whiny person.
- 19:53You need to not be an angry person.
- 19:55You need to not be a scared person.
- 19:57Serve with a good attitude because you're working for the
- 20:00Lord. You're not really working for.
- 20:04You know, I, I, I don't know right offhand what a bunch of
- 20:06companies are. I know one of my friends works
- 20:10at Northeastern Supply. You don't just work for there.
- 20:12You don't just work for the post office.
- 20:14You don't just work for Cisco or for Utz.
- 20:18So serve because you are working for King Jesus and you're, you
- 20:23are a picture of Jesus in your workplace.
- 20:25So serve with a good attitude because that's how Jesus would
- 20:28serve. And he says, know that whatever
- 20:30good each one does, slave or free, he will receive this back
- 20:33from the Lord. God has some bonuses that are
- 20:37waiting for you and for me. So let's put our all in and
- 20:40let's get those bonuses. There's a work incentive program
- 20:44in the Kingdom of heaven. And then verse 9, masters, treat
- 20:47your slaves the same way, with a good attitude, with a sincere
- 20:51heart, treating them as you would Jesus like.
- 20:53If Jesus was in your workforce, how would you treat him as your
- 20:58employee? I says treat your slaves the
- 21:00same way without threatening them.
- 21:02A Christian should never threaten an employee or here
- 21:06within Rome, it would be very commonplace.
- 21:08Threaten, abuse, all that kind of stuff would very often take
- 21:12place in the Roman culture. But Paul tells them, no, you
- 21:16don't mistreat your slaves, your employees, your servants,
- 21:21because you know that their master and yours is in heaven
- 21:26and there is no favoritism with him.
- 21:28You will be punished by the Lord when you mistreat those that are
- 21:32under your care. So treat them with love, treat
- 21:36them with kindness, because your Master is going to treat you in
- 21:40that same way. Well, I hope that these verses
- 21:44have been an encouragement to you.
- 21:45I know it was a challenge to me as a dad, as one that works,
- 21:50that I do a job, and even as one that I have people that are
- 21:56under me. It's all of you know, two
- 21:57people, one part time custodian and then my wife who who works
- 22:02part time as my administrative assistant.
- 22:05But I'm in challenged treat every aspect of my life like I'm
- 22:09doing it for Jesus. Thanks for tuning in.
- 22:13Hope you have a great day.
