- 0:00Welcome to this edition of Psychology Explained by Dr.
- 0:04Curtis Peterson, who is trying to bring psychology alive
- 0:08for us all. All right,
- 0:11for this, uh, modality, I am going to use
- 0:14very Western ideas of treatment, and I
- 0:19want to just note that treatment
- 0:23groups can go well beyond this conversation that we're talking
- 0:27about. To more holistic models of treatment.
- 0:32But I want to speak specifically to the idea
- 0:36of treatment groups as this modality
- 0:41of symptom reduction and
- 0:46the like. Okay, so basically a treatment
- 0:50group is aimed at working on those symptoms
- 0:56that bring about trauma,
- 0:58anxiety, the— in
- 1:03addiction groups, we're talking about things like relapse
- 1:07prevention that focus on symptoms that lead
- 1:11to addictive processes. And so the treatment
- 1:15group is really about skill coping
- 1:20and symptom reduction. Okay,
- 1:24and so if you see this scale on the, the,
- 1:28the, uh, this on this anxiety component,
- 1:33uh, you start with an individual with a high anxiety,
- 1:38and by the end of the treatment group, you hope that
- 1:41they score lower on some measure
- 1:45of anxiety and anxiety issues.
- 1:49Okay, so the main components
- 1:53of a treatment group is it's usually facilitated by
- 1:58a licensed clinician or a
- 2:02credentialed mental health professional.
- 2:07This can include facilitation by individuals who
- 2:11are supervised under a licensed individual,
- 2:15So, I know, for example, on the Tohono O'odham Nation,
- 2:19their behavioral health center has individuals
- 2:23that are not necessarily licensed
- 2:27or whatnot, but they're under a licensed
- 2:31individual who then guides
- 2:37and signs off on the treatment modality that
- 2:41is being provided by the individual. Okay, this is
- 2:45true also, for example, in a lot
- 2:48of treatment centers for
- 2:52addiction where there may be a
- 2:55few licensed individuals,
- 2:58but the treatment is provided under the supervision
- 3:04of individuals. And Cameron says, in Salt
- 3:08River at treatment I work at,
- 3:12follows kind of the same model. My point being at
- 3:16this level is this is something that
- 3:20there at least has to be a supervised licensed
- 3:25individual that then reviews
- 3:29and provides guidance and supervision to those
- 3:33providing the treatment because in this one
- 3:37the focus is concrete
- 3:43symptom reduction. Specifically,
- 3:46in our example
- 3:56with— for example, with when we're dealing
- 3:59with domestic violence or something like that,
- 4:04symptom reduction has to do with PTSD
- 4:08symptoms from the trauma. It may deal with anxiety
- 4:12or major depression that you want the individual
- 4:16to, to do. And there's a question, will we
- 4:19be licensed after this class? No,
- 4:24licensure actually usually occurs at the master's level
- 4:28for counseling. You can become a bachelor-level
- 4:33licensed social worker. Uh, but usually the licensure
- 4:38is left to, um, people with
- 4:41advanced degrees. Now, with that being said,
- 4:47you can become— you could potentially become certified
- 4:51in addiction counseling, um,
- 4:54if you take the courses you've done at TOCC.
- 4:58And there's national organizations that that
- 5:02does certification for addiction,
- 5:05and I'll go over that later
- 5:09on for those who want to seek that certification.
- 5:16But yeah, classes like this are preparatory.
- 5:20I'm hoping that you'll go on and seek
- 5:24that licensure, but no, this class isn't—
- 5:30is a step towards it, but it's
- 5:33one of many steps. So I hope that answers the
- 5:37question. So the
- 5:41focus is on concrete symptom reduction when we're talking
- 5:45about treatment type of groups.
- 5:48And the method is that
- 5:53There's really a more— Cameron,
- 5:58yes, I'm saying it is possible.
- 6:01Yes, yes, yes. By taking this class,
- 6:04it's very possible with the
- 6:08additional education and everything else. So everyone
- 6:13in this class, I feel, has the potential and the possibility
- 6:18of that. I won't deny that at all because
- 6:22I look at your attendance and I look at what you write,
- 6:25and there's no one here without the ability to
- 6:29become a licensed therapist
- 6:34or a licensed social worker. So thank you, Cameron, for that comment.
- 6:39With the methods for a treatment group,
- 6:42high adherence to structural evidence-based
- 6:46modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy,
- 6:51dialectical behavioral therapy, are what
- 6:55are adhered to. Now, they have the similarities with
- 6:59a psychosocial group in that you do the check-ins to ground the individuals
- 7:04to the group that day. At the end, after you've
- 7:08gone through rehearsals
- 7:12on how to use a skill, Da, da, da.
- 7:15You do a checkout where you say,
- 7:19you know, basically how will individuals use
- 7:23the skill we learned today or what we talked about today outside
- 7:27the group? And that's more of non-structured
- 7:31conversations. But the good portion of a treatment
- 7:36group is focusing on specific skills and
- 7:40abilities and rehearsing those skills,
- 7:43role-playing those skills.
- 7:46Thank you for joining us for this Psychology Explained. I hope
- 7:50you'll join us in later episodes where we can— we'll continue
- 7:54to investigate the human mind and psychology.
