- 0:45Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast.
- 0:48I'm Curtis Wilson. I'm Brian Sigler, buddy.
- 0:52Wednesday afternoon Wednesday afternoon, but for special
- 0:56reasons me and you are getting ready to head on vacation in a
- 1:00few Deuces. Deuces.
- 1:03So finding out you're heading to South Boston for a little bit.
- 1:07I'm heading. I'm heading to the mountains of
- 1:10North Carolina Lake Lure. So some well-deserved time off
- 1:15for your boys here, kick back, relax have a few drinks, see
- 1:19some family. You know, you know, but we were
- 1:24sitting here and it's like, what we got.
- 1:26We need to hit one before we go ahead.
- 1:29At least one episode it, right? Yeah.
- 1:31Got it. Got to give you guys a little
- 1:33taste to taste the something before we head away.
- 1:36Otherwise it'll be a month without an episode.
- 1:38That's just not like us. That ain't like us at all.
- 1:41Not at all. You don't know us.
- 1:42We try to pull one every alley every couple weeks during the
- 1:44offseason to keep you updated. And what you're looking
- 1:48primarily on the back, half of the at the episode today, Is
- 1:52back in the late winter, early spring, we had three very
- 1:55special guests on, then why can't some 24/7 hokey Legend of
- 1:59white Vic and marketing connoisseur?
- 2:04And I'm calling her a connoisseur because that's what
- 2:06she is Christine and Garnett and when Brown went back and
- 2:10listened to those. And there were some really great
- 2:12things coming out especially what's happened in the
- 2:14transpired months. So in just a few minutes, we're
- 2:18going to pull out a few clips for you guys to listen to, and
- 2:21kind of About this was five months ago and three months ago
- 2:25and sort of what's changed with the Hokies.
- 2:27But before we jump into that, the Hokey recruiting run has
- 2:32been on a tear the last five weeks.
- 2:36We getting some guys in the boat.
- 2:38We getting some guys in the boat real quick, but the boat went
- 2:41from mostly empty, too darn near full, in a matter of five weeks.
- 2:48Heck yeah. Like 10 guys in five weeks.
- 2:51Absolutely rolling. You know, I think we are now
- 2:55officially up to 17 commits, which is wild and we're not
- 3:00going to hit them all. No disrespect, you know two
- 3:04guys, you know, like Bryce dukes and Jackson like you Johnny
- 3:08Garnett mat Hoffman. All those guys are good.
- 3:12Players Daquan right in their own right?
- 3:15But if we did that we wouldn't be able to do the other episode
- 3:18and trust us and Tucker Holloway missed him as well.
- 3:21The speech. From down in North Carolina.
- 3:24But we wanted to hit kind of Five Guys real quick that to us
- 3:29have. Made the biggest splash and
- 3:33we're going to start with the highest rated current recruit
- 3:37Xavier Simmons. Getting the 336 connection back
- 3:41going. The 6-3, 235 athlete.
- 3:44The four-star. Top 200 player.
- 3:47Brian. What do you think of this guy?
- 3:51So I'll say two things here. The big thing is, you know, he's
- 3:55the first real four star that has been for Star when he
- 3:59committed to us in a while. That's that's big.
- 4:02We'll talk about that second thing where he's coming from.
- 4:06So we're talking 336, Greensboro North Carolina.
- 4:10This is also the footprint of the Apparently recruiting
- 4:16Aficionado Mack Brown and yet, here we are.
- 4:20Are going down there, grabbing a guy from Carolina, you know,
- 4:25pulling the fence back down a little bit here.
- 4:28So I like to see that this kid is already the size, you like to
- 4:34see in a linebacker 63 to 35. Good athlete.
- 4:40Good tackler. I like this a lot.
- 4:43Not just the fact that it's Highly rated guy a highly rated
- 4:48guy in a recent Rivals backyard, but also the fact that he can
- 4:55play some damn good football. Absolutely, he is a top 10
- 5:01player in the state of North Carolina.
- 5:02So that's really big, the other pieces.
- 5:07You know, you look at, very good commitment list and I think
- 5:11having the RT the size ready to potentially play regardless,
- 5:14what happens is upcoming season? You know, this is a guy you want
- 5:19on your team. Alright.
- 5:21Now the next Guy, Brian, I don't think anybody knew Anybody knew
- 5:25this guy before a few weeks ago and I'll be the first to admit I
- 5:30was, I was a little bit upset and when they pulled the offer
- 5:35and I see this kid commit and then you looked at its tape and
- 5:38it's like that's different. This kid isn't some unranked
- 5:42unknown guy, he just didn't get a Junior Day.
- 5:46Malcolm Jones at a Leesburg Georgia, the safety, six 1285.
- 5:53When Brian looked at his tape, I think you said 86, which we were
- 5:56like. Yeah, I was like oh wow, that's
- 5:58pretty good 2471, a step further.
- 6:00Put them in an 88. So, haha three-star, what are we
- 6:03getting from this guy? Brian?
- 6:04Because it seems like he was on board quick.
- 6:09Yeah. I mean I think this is and we're
- 6:11to play a clip a little bit that Evans going to talk about this.
- 6:15What's going on a lot in this cycle is that a lot of these
- 6:19guys are under recruited because of the everything going on with
- 6:24covid-19 getting Junior camps. Not getting Junior tape or
- 6:28getting Junior tape late or not playing as many games as they're
- 6:31used to. There's a whole lot of factors
- 6:34at play here, so there's going to be a handful of.
- 6:37I mean, we can Call them Diamonds in the Rough.
- 6:39But that this is more of a, because of the circumstances,
- 6:43just flat-out under recruited in the timeframe, where most of
- 6:47these guys start getting on programs radar, but when we bet,
- 6:53you know, you talked about being a little upset, when we backed
- 6:55off of Sherrod, Koval once Clemson jumped in there.
- 7:00And then you know this guy got in the boat shortly thereafter
- 7:03that I think that is what you saw.
- 7:06All right so we got we backed off.
- 7:08Guy that we could still potentially have at least made a
- 7:11run up until he committed and maybe even after for a guy
- 7:14that's unranked. And then all of a sudden you see
- 7:16his ranking pop up there, you're like oh okay maybe just not
- 7:20enough Publications have given this guy fair look, you know
- 7:25before now they finally have since he got a an offer from
- 7:28Tech and then got when I had committed.
- 7:31So I like him. I mean, I think he's going to
- 7:34be, he may not be an immediate contributor, but If Lee was a
- 7:39good pivot, if we decided we weren't going to pursue Sherrod,
- 7:42Koval any further. Absolutely, still hate them,
- 7:45pivoting off Koval because I think having an estate guy like
- 7:48that. It's giving you attention.
- 7:50They should not have pivot it off of them.
- 7:51I think it was a bad move but obviously months later he
- 7:56committed to Clemson. He also called it his dream
- 7:58offer. Let's go to the third down in
- 8:01the 75. Kyrie moist, and 65 220 in out
- 8:08of Suffolk. It goes back to the theme that
- 8:12started just, you know, 18 months ago.
- 8:15We're getting bigger on the line.
- 8:18What have you seen from this guy?
- 8:19Obviously, three star need three recruit but Somebody Evan
- 8:27mentioned way back in February, that commits, you know, 50 check
- 8:32it check, his offer list, he's not light on the offer list.
- 8:35I know a lot of those offers are coming from schools out west.
- 8:39But you know, when you get a guy that's being recruited by
- 8:44Arizona State, you kind of take a little bit of interest and
- 8:46say, okay, well, they see something in him here.
- 8:49Let's give this a look and really good frame.
- 8:53Definitely goes a long with With what bill has been recruiting,
- 8:58since he's became the defensive line coach at Virginia Tech 64,
- 9:02220. So longer type player be he was
- 9:07recruited by JC and Bill, their started definitely put their
- 9:10footprint on the type of players that we're recruiting for the
- 9:14defensive line and showing more height, more size in general,
- 9:18but definitely more length and I like this, this kid, he plays he
- 9:23plays long and he plays with good luck.
- 9:25Courage. That's also be talking about his
- 9:28offer list. You're talking about, you to
- 9:30mentioned Arizona State. Also to that caught, my eye of
- 9:33through, MC3 that caught my eye. Washington, always good
- 9:37defensively. Indiana and Michigan stay with
- 9:41Mel Tucker. So, maybe maybe it's one of
- 9:45those things where it's, it was either I'm staying home, or I'm
- 9:48going Way Out West and he chose to stay home, which is a good
- 9:51thing now, Brian, the next one to me, As much as I love the
- 9:58Xavier and Xavier is our Crown Jewel.
- 10:02This guy's a real crown, jewel prashad, Pernell at a Highland
- 10:07Springs defensive lineman six-foot-four 260 pounds.
- 10:13Another guy that was mentioned and something that's been
- 10:17mentioned, since we started, this thing is opening up the
- 10:20gates to the 804 and opening up the gates to Highland Springs
- 10:25and the biggie for me and you we set it.
- 10:29What happened with Jabari Parker who had three or four places he
- 10:34could go play. And taking a preferred walk-on
- 10:36was sort of the kind of a busting of the door.
- 10:39This is big Yeah, this is big getting back in the, the good
- 10:45graces of Highland Springs which is probably right there with
- 10:50like the Oscar Smith. So being the best program in the
- 10:53state, being able to get Richard Purnell to commit.
- 10:58That that's going to be big, not only paying dividends from him
- 11:01as a player, but down the road as well, for getting some of
- 11:05these other talented guys that come from that program back to
- 11:09Virginia Tech. Especially with guys like
- 11:12obviously Lauren Johnson being the coach there that that's
- 11:16going to pay dividends for us down the road.
- 11:18But let's just talk about Purnell himself, which I think
- 11:21the reason that some of the other the bigger programs didn't
- 11:26push harder, he's kind of a tweener think of him, kind of in
- 11:30the morel Pollard type build. Their he's going to probably
- 11:35play a three technique for us. He's taller though, so he's 64
- 11:39250 by the time he's Getting significant snaps, he's probably
- 11:42going to be in that to 65 to 70 range.
- 11:47So I mean I like him as a three technique.
- 11:49Probably has the athleticism, the slot outside if need be but
- 11:54I like him as a three technique and like I said very much in the
- 11:58in the mole of a Norrell Pollard.
- 12:00Also yeah, just getting back here with the 84 getting back
- 12:03with Island getting back with Lauren, it says a lot.
- 12:06It says that whatever has changed the philosophy.
- 12:11Of the recruiting staff. It's it's to us going in the
- 12:14right direction and and you see Rashad Rashad doesn't seem like
- 12:20he is a quiet kid. He seems very charismatic and he
- 12:26seemed like one of these guys that will lead the way and be
- 12:30talking to other guys saying you need to come in.
- 12:33Probably the favorite thing I heard from him was and you
- 12:37probably read the quote crime when Virginia Tech was good.
- 12:40Players went there, something did white dick mentioned and you
- 12:44hear kid like that, it's you, that's the mentality we want
- 12:50now, Brian the next guy. Holy moly out of nowhere.
- 12:56We had to see if it was true or not.
- 12:58So you see something pop up and you're looking all around like
- 13:01is this real? Is this guy really got an offer
- 13:04Xavier chaplain from down in Beaufort South Carolina, six
- 13:10reported six foot, six 370, also reports 65 340.
- 13:16Either way, he is a big offensive.
- 13:19Lineman you looked at his take just this morning.
- 13:21Brian, what are we getting out of the currently unranked Xavier
- 13:24ER, We're getting a guy that is big and can move for his
- 13:31reported height and weight. He has good bend does a good job
- 13:37of getting off the line didn't have a whole lot of snaps doing
- 13:42past Pro saw one and it was more of like a sprint out.
- 13:46Type play wasn't wasn't like a traditional spa for seven step
- 13:49drop. So not sure how hold up in pass.
- 13:52Pro could potentially be a guard or at?
- 13:55Cool. You know, there's a lot of
- 13:58potential there for someone that big that's also that athletic
- 14:01his athleticism. Definitely popped off of the
- 14:03tape more so than probably anything else.
- 14:07Being able to see a guy that big with that much Bend in that much
- 14:11quickness at the snap, which is scary.
- 14:14Now, there are the reports that Clemson and Georgia and a few
- 14:19other big schools are potentially.
- 14:21Look at offering him to come camp with them, but Italy.
- 14:27And this is what you know, people are saying happened.
- 14:30He literally got the offer committed and went back to work
- 14:34on the farm. I don't know if Glitz and
- 14:38glamour will be the selling point to him.
- 14:41So yeah, I mean he might like the idea of playing for storied
- 14:46franchises or whatever, but I don't necessarily know if that,
- 14:50you know, that shiny object on campus is going to be what's
- 14:53going to lure him. Absolutely.
- 14:55So hey Xavier for listen to this.
- 14:57Virginia Tech has a great agriculture program, contact us.
- 15:00We'll put you in touch with a guy named Wilkerson and he'll
- 15:02hook you up and tell you all about it.
- 15:06All right? Brian this the next nine days to
- 15:10me we talked about it before. This is make or break.
- 15:16Yep, for the class Friday Ramon Brown out of Manchester for
- 15:22star. Top 200 guy, top 15 running back
- 15:27in the country, is going to announces recruitment.
- 15:31Brian who you feel? And we fighting him for, as we
- 15:34get down the stretch here. So there was just a four star
- 15:38running back, committed to Penn State's.
- 15:40I'm pretty sure they're kind of out of the mix.
- 15:43It looks like the the last two to give us a run is Maryland in
- 15:48potentially South Carolina. I know that's going to that's
- 15:51going to hurt the ears of some Hokies out.
- 15:53There with with Shane Beamer being the head coach down there
- 15:57but all things seem to be pointing to him being a hokie on
- 16:02Friday. So we shall see how that turns
- 16:04out but I like where we're sitting with Ramon Brown Razor,
- 16:11Ramon Raisa. Say hello to the bad guy.
- 16:16Let's go back when we were kids. All right.
- 16:18The other one and this would be you always talk about this would
- 16:23probably be the Crown Jewel. He's a top 120 player, he's a
- 16:28local guy. He's got offers from all over
- 16:31the place Gunner. Givens is set to commit on the
- 16:3316th, I will be back from vacation, you will be still on
- 16:37vacation and Seems like us and Penn State, right?
- 16:43It seems like it's a two-man fight.
- 16:45This is two men fight and I kind of like the home guys.
- 16:49I'm not gonna lie. I like we're where we sit with
- 16:52Gunnar Givens. I think we can get him in and
- 16:55I'm not even sure if he's going to end up being an offensive
- 16:58lineman forest or a defensive lineman for us.
- 17:00But regardless skill-wise athleticism size, kind of brings
- 17:07all of that to the table, all the things you want.
- 17:11From a guy that's going to play line for.
- 17:12You played a lot of different spots for his high school.
- 17:17He's kind of blocked some, he's been tight in.
- 17:19I mean he plays defensive line so there's a lot going on with
- 17:23that but just in terms of, you know, by the top being hokey
- 17:30land, no doubt, getting getting gunner in would be huge.
- 17:37It would definitely help backfill on the offensive.
- 17:40Line some of the, the holes we have looking forward your to
- 17:44next year or the year after that.
- 17:47So I really like that get. And it never hurts to get a high
- 17:51rated for Star guy in your boat. Definitely helps the the
- 17:55perception which I think is half of our recruiting problems.
- 18:00In general is just perception, kind of shaping how the reality
- 18:06goes forward. Absolutely.
- 18:09And the last two recruiting classes did not help at all with
- 18:13that sort of perception and in a lot of the stuff that we're
- 18:17going to be playing for you guys in the next little bit here.
- 18:20It talks about perception and things like that.
- 18:22So you know, definitely, you know, stay listening got again,
- 18:27stuff from Evan. The one Vic and Christina
- 18:31Garnett. We're calling this our summer
- 18:34Supercut and we're going to lead off here with with Evan.
- 18:38He's going to talk a little bit about the what we just kind of
- 18:42finished up their some of the guys that were looking at in the
- 18:4622 class and how we sit and who we need to get into the boat for
- 18:51this to be a successful class. Well, you know, I think, I
- 18:56think, Virginia Tech needs to focus completely in the state of
- 19:00Virginia. First, there's a lot of talent
- 19:02in the state of Virginia right now.
- 19:05You know, you can look at guys like obviously, there's Gunner
- 19:07Givens at a lord, Baba taught, one of the top tackles in the
- 19:10country, Virginia. Tech is definitely in the mix
- 19:14for him. You know, you got guys, like
- 19:16George Pettaway Ramon Brown in the state of Virginia.
- 19:19I think those guys are both at least speaking with Virginia
- 19:23Tech and have some Of interest in them, you know, you look at
- 19:28guys like Isaiah Montgomery out of adult Landstown.
- 19:32He's a guy that's a moderately ranked guy, but I think he's a
- 19:34big-time offensive tackle but, you know, really looking at his
- 19:39his possible projection at the next level.
- 19:41I think he's got a lot of talent.
- 19:43You know, Bryson Jennings dad played at Virginia Tech played
- 19:47with JC price. I think you don't want to
- 19:49overlook that connection, he's a four-star guy, out of Clover
- 19:52Hill, you know, Richard Purnell, and Were one of the guys from
- 19:56Highland Springs, Kyrie moist in.
- 19:58You can get him out of King's Fork.
- 20:00I think Virginia Tech can actually do really well in the
- 20:02state of Virginia next year. I think Virginia Tech really
- 20:06should take you. No take the 20 21 Foundation
- 20:11that they set in the state of Virginia.
- 20:12Try to build upon that and really try to take advantage.
- 20:16I've been up here in talent in 2021 and try to rebuild that
- 20:21roster with Virginia guys. Virginia Tech has always been at
- 20:23their best when the Is littered with those guys that are
- 20:27homegrown, so I think they should continue to try and mind
- 20:30this in-state Talent. Alright, next guys, the white
- 20:35Vic here's going to be talking about Virginia kreutz between
- 20:37now and then, you know, as of today we have five Virginia
- 20:42recruits of the 17 and looking at Ramon Brown and Gunner,
- 20:46Givens, potentially coming, we could have seven and probably a
- 20:50few more guys that are being chased as well.
- 20:52But let's see what the white thinks about.
- 20:55What's changed between the guys back in his day, 20 years ago.
- 20:59And now They know more, they're more knowledgeable and social
- 21:03media has helped with them knowing more about other
- 21:06schools. I got my letter from Notre Dame
- 21:08one time and I was a big Irish fan and I Had a nortre Dame
- 21:12jacket because they know I was, I love Tony Rice, and the
- 21:15rocket, and Bettis and Bets, and all those different guys.
- 21:19They had taught fight, you know, you just like and Notre Dame,
- 21:23you know, and I'm living in Hampton Virginia and I mean, I
- 21:25wore that jacket, you know, I'm walking around Hampton and
- 21:28Newport News looking like size-wise With a warning.
- 21:33And I remember my dad said, you like them, don't you?
- 21:37He was like, you know what they located?
- 21:38I was like, nah, man. But I'm going, you know, and he
- 21:41was like, nah, I'm in 10th or 11th grade.
- 21:44And he pulls out. For those listening, they're
- 21:47going to laugh at our old school, the old G's listener,
- 21:50and encyclopedia, and he blows the dust off, and he opens it
- 21:54up, and it's like, this is a map.
- 21:56You live here in Virginia Notre. Dame is in Indiana and You know,
- 22:00you start back. They do it now you get those
- 22:03media guys and the media got, you know, you saw how they had a
- 22:08lot of Dwight VIXX, you know, a lot of Dwight Vicks, you know,
- 22:14on their roster and long story short, man, these guys now are
- 22:20just more knowledgeable. They are more aware and I don't
- 22:24think especially with the dip in wins with Virginia Tech, you
- 22:28know, eight wins. In 75 and six it's two folds in
- 22:37the 90s we were we were not we were the best kept secret.
- 22:41The Tidewater area was producing tons of talent and now you see
- 22:48the benefits between all the great players and the great
- 22:55colleges now that come down there, you know, Virginia guys
- 22:59have been leaving on the State Fair.
- 23:00Ever, you know, Ron Springs went to Ohio State know, maybe no, I
- 23:06forgot where Ron Springs is. But he's Shawn Springs.
- 23:08Dad, but he went out of state. He went to Lafayette High
- 23:11School, Lawrence Taylor who went to Lafayette High School from
- 23:14the Tidewater area. Went to UNC obviously and had
- 23:20Dre blah who went to UNC and you had drama Curry who was the only
- 23:25player to win national Gatorade Player of the Year and all in
- 23:28football and basketball and he The McDonald's All-American in
- 23:32basketball. He won three state championships
- 23:34at Hampton High one, national championship in football and one
- 23:38state championship in basketball.
- 23:40So this notion that, oh my God, your Junior players always
- 23:43leaving that. Know, they've been leaving.
- 23:45The difference is the Virginia that we know, compared to what
- 23:50we grew up in? There's no longer the best kept
- 23:52secret, Ohio state, Alabama, Clemson, the bigwigs.
- 23:56They stay down there. Now, Penn State.
- 23:59They live down there. Every now, and they were I pluck
- 24:01a player from my area now and it's not just Tidewater it's
- 24:04Loudoun County. You see a lot of those guys, go
- 24:06to Stanford. The West Coast, Northern
- 24:08Virginia. Kids are going out of state.
- 24:10And the other thing is, there's some other layers to it.
- 24:12The state of Virginia has improved dramatically.
- 24:15You look with LJ's doing Lauren Johnson and Holly Springs
- 24:18Veronica. The Richmond area was always
- 24:22known for basketball but now that's not the case anymore.
- 24:25There's some suburbs of Richmond.
- 24:27The Chester Chester feels the surrounding areas have
- 24:30Dramatically Northern Virginia, Westfield one.
- 24:32The state's three years in a row, used to be the tarwater
- 24:35Richmond, show, and football and basketball.
- 24:37That is changed as well. All that combines with,
- 24:41unfortunately, Virginia Tech and UVA picked their worst times to
- 24:45fall off. Yep, they did its best to you.
- 24:49Yeah. I mean, it UVA has been
- 24:51rebuilding for years and for years, Tecna fit, you know, Tech
- 24:56benefited for years because they're, you know, you look at
- 24:59that. Five team, I believe their
- 25:02entire defense starters, that were ranked number one in the
- 25:06nation or maybe that was 07-08. But pretty much most of their
- 25:08stars were from the Commonwealth and 2005 and 06 07. 08 Virginia
- 25:14Tech was signing and getting commitments from the some of the
- 25:17best players in this state. And then when you have Allen
- 25:23Iverson's the place, the code versus the Ronald kiriza Tyrod,
- 25:27Taylor's and all these guys. Mike Vick they started to
- 25:30emerge. Cruz and become household names.
- 25:33All of a sudden, it's a perfect storm and what makes things bad.
- 25:37If you're Virginia Tech fan is, you know, as the transition took
- 25:41place from bheema to Fuente people pick on Fuente that you
- 25:45know the cynics and critics but at the end of the day the last
- 25:48three or four years of being his tenure weren't the best.
- 25:51You had a lot of six in six seasons.
- 25:53You had that 18 and 5 season where they got blasted in the
- 25:57Sun Bowl against UCLA. Yep.
- 25:59And It's just not a good look. It's the worst time.
- 26:03Consider this during that time frame before.
- 26:07If Wednesday took over, you had a lot of guys that would have
- 26:11kept Tech afloat in that National brand.
- 26:14Peace. If they had shows Tech but Tech
- 26:16kept finishing second. You had the Devon Forbes and
- 26:20Ricky Slade unions. But you also had this on hand,
- 26:24Derek, naughty daily homes, and all those guys pick Other school
- 26:31and Tech was always second. Even your boy and went to
- 26:35Florida State the tall defensive end.
- 26:38I think His Name Escapes me, that went to Florida State.
- 26:41Yeah, yeah. Do your worst.
- 26:47Mistake of his life was going on there.
- 26:49Oh, I'm sure I'm sure because they told me he was going to win
- 26:52number two and I'm like yo and your body wearing Dion's number
- 26:59what they saying. But detective rain coming home,
- 27:04you know, we're number two. No sir, you know I'm saying?
- 27:09So like I did, you know, but I give Florida State and Ohio,
- 27:14State and Alabama and all the schools Credit, you know, Dasani
- 27:18and I was with him, people don't realize this, his first
- 27:21unofficial visit or visit to any University.
- 27:25He followed my wife and I on down with his high school coach
- 27:28at Virginia Tech. I introduced I introduced him.
- 27:30To Kam Chancellor and Tyrod Taylor.
- 27:34I interviewed him on cowbell, he's radio show at the spring
- 27:37game. The same day, Chuck Clark
- 27:38committed, Tim settle was that my football camp?
- 27:43You know, I used to do football camps.
- 27:44So I was doing a lot of high school subject in homes as
- 27:47picture and internet with me him and Mike he was at my Symposium.
- 27:50I did all those guys I mentioned were at my football camps.
- 27:53The only one we got was Tim settle and look what Tim said.
- 27:56I was doing for the Virginia Tech brand and also look what
- 27:59he's doing. For the Washington football
- 28:01team. Alright, so now that Dwight Vic
- 28:04is covered kind of the perception of recruits of the
- 28:08program. We're going to let Evan Watkins
- 28:11go into a little bit more about some of the support staff.
- 28:15Build out that Virginia Tech is looking to do and some of the
- 28:18new recruiting promotions that have happened within the
- 28:21on-field coaching staff. That's why we have seen support
- 28:25staffs grow year in and year out to Growing exponentially every
- 28:30school, you know, even your school's like Dominion have the
- 28:34moving your FCS schools. James, Madison is building out
- 28:37recruiting departments. Everyone needs recruiting
- 28:40departments. Virginia Tech has a recruiting
- 28:42department now, they need to Beef It Up.
- 28:44They need to pour some money into it.
- 28:46Take a lot of this pressure off of the ten assistance, and
- 28:49Justin Fuente and you know, hit the ground, you know, hit the
- 28:54pavement hard, hit the pavement fast and see, you know, kind of
- 28:59see what shakes out when you cast that really wide net then
- 29:02you filter it out. To your core board of recruits
- 29:06you want and let the coaches go out and try to Feast.
- 29:09Yeah, I'm glad you brought up tap because I mean that that's
- 29:12what we had talked about the same thing and really kind of
- 29:15reiterated, what you said is that, you know, it's a guy going
- 29:18to a similar type role with an NFL organization wants to win a
- 29:22title and he doesn't have to recruit can mean that that's a,
- 29:25that's a big part of what he's been doing day-to-day in the
- 29:28last, you know, year plus that now he's not even, it's not even
- 29:32on his plane. Or so, and let me go ahead and
- 29:35piggyback off that. So, you know, with, with Darryl
- 29:38Tapp leaving, we got JC price. Now, coming in and on top of
- 29:43replacing as the code defensive line coach.
- 29:47He's also taking on the the defensive recruiting coordinator
- 29:51position with Adam Lichtenberg taking over that as a, on the
- 29:56offensive side, getting a promotion there.
- 29:59What do you think are some advantages on the recruiting
- 30:01trail with this type of roll for these two coaches relative to
- 30:06what the Hokies are, trying to do with building that recruiting
- 30:08department up as well. So typically, you know, pre
- 30:13covid you would have your recruiting coordinators, you're
- 30:16on the field. Coaches with one or two would be
- 30:19designated as a recruiting coordinator, and that helps them
- 30:23on the road. You know, it doesn't necessarily
- 30:26help them when they're back in the offices, in the War Room,
- 30:28building up the board and, and doing all of that, that helps
- 30:32them on the road. You know, coordinating a lot of
- 30:35the stuff. But, you know, when you talk
- 30:38about like a recruiting director, recruiting coordinator
- 30:41essentially, right now, under covid rules, they're kind of the
- 30:44same thing because support staff is allowed to contact recruits,
- 30:48you know, over the phone on social media, things like that,
- 30:51and coaches aren't allowed to go out on the road.
- 30:54So there's not really that big of a difference.
- 30:57And to me, not really nothing. Really is going to change, you
- 31:02know, Adam, Tannenberg behind the scenes has been a phenomenal
- 31:07higher. In my opinion when it comes to
- 31:09recruiting he's a guy that's got a lot of contacts and he's a guy
- 31:14that is a tireless worker. I mean, he's whenever I talk to,
- 31:19you know, some contacts of mine or I talk to High School coaches
- 31:22or even talk to, you know, some of the contacts I have it jute,
- 31:24the Juco level. They all talk about how
- 31:27Lichtenberg is a guy, he may not win every recruit, but he is not
- 31:32going to be outworked. So and I want to, I want to make
- 31:36sure that people understand that that's not me saying he's gonna
- 31:38go out and land every person on his board.
- 31:41Yeah, that's me saying he is going to work as hard as humanly
- 31:45possible to give her Gina Tech. The best chance to land that
- 31:48person. Now, there might be somebody out
- 31:50there that can offer more. There might be schools, I can
- 31:52offer National Championship, you know, possibilities road to the
- 31:57NFL things like that, that Virginia Tech doesn't, you know,
- 32:00may not be able to offer it that position but He's a tireless
- 32:05tireless worker. So we do when you're back in
- 32:09Blacksburg and they're back in the war room and they're going
- 32:11over the board, nothing really changes for Adam.
- 32:14Lichtenberg this is the role he already had.
- 32:17He was already doing it, he just didn't have the title of it.
- 32:20The title was kind of a pat on the back.
- 32:24Thanks for all the recruiting help that you do.
- 32:26Thanks for everything that you've done for just under
- 32:29Justin Fuente Resume Builder. Here's your title.
- 32:33Price, kind of the same thing, you know, I've met JC price a
- 32:37few times when he would come to Virginia Tech for for summer
- 32:42camps. When Martin, you know, when they
- 32:44were always invite Marshall to come in and evaluate some kids
- 32:47as well? He was always there.
- 32:49Really, really, an energetic guy.
- 32:52My big question when they were replacing tap was I think JC
- 32:57price of great fit. I think he's 100% the the right
- 33:01guy to step into that role. Ah, but what he want to split
- 33:05duties, I thought that that was going to be a hang up, you know,
- 33:08not, everyone wants to share duties.
- 33:11When you get that job, you know, at the school you went to and
- 33:15you want to kind of be the guy, you know, you want to be the
- 33:19guy. You don't worry want to to split
- 33:21that role amongst somebody else. So I think this was a great way
- 33:26for Virginia Tech to entice him and say, Hey, you might be the
- 33:28assistant d-line coach, but we want you to oversee all of our
- 33:32defensive record. Reading, you know, and
- 33:34unofficially what I had heard was this was kind of what Justin
- 33:39Hamilton was doing. You know I don't even have the
- 33:42title of it but Justin Hamilton had a major say in all of the
- 33:47defensive recruiting make sense of the D coordinator should sign
- 33:50off. What this does is take a little
- 33:52bit off of his plate and allow him to spend a little bit more
- 33:56time on focusing on being the defensive coordinator.
- 34:00So you know, when it comes to You know, you know, breaking it
- 34:06down to like the brass tacks of it.
- 34:09Is there going to be a major return on investment by
- 34:12labeling? These two guys recruiting
- 34:14coordinators offensive and defensive, not that we will see
- 34:17immediately what I do think it does is furthers that Foundation
- 34:24that I talked about earlier that, you know, I think, let's
- 34:27say that the recruiting department does start to split a
- 34:30little bit into Juco High School.
- 34:33When and transfer portal, and all of that.
- 34:37Now, you can take that information and you can filter
- 34:41that into to record recruiting coordinators.
- 34:44Who can then look at it. Yes.
- 34:46No. And then, you know, kind of send
- 34:49out the hounds to do the recruiting and oversee it.
- 34:53And then when you think, you know, you go in that war room
- 34:56and you say, hey, we need, you know, X number of wide receivers
- 35:01X numbers are running backs. Things like That you now we'll
- 35:04have a little bit more buy-in with the ten assistance.
- 35:08Now, obviously the recruiting stop will heavily be involved
- 35:11there as well. No, but I think we're just
- 35:14looking at the foundation. And I've mentioned this before.
- 35:18I tell people all the time, don't get bogged down with
- 35:22titles in college football, because most of the time they're
- 35:28meaningless, and I don't want that to like, to not to belittle
- 35:32in either coaches, or taking anything away from sure.
- 35:34But associate head coach assistant head coach.
- 35:38I mean, you have a head coach. If he goes down, you have your
- 35:41number two. Okay, you don't need, we don't
- 35:44need three guys with this name. We don't need all of these.
- 35:47different, you know, ins and outs, and nuances of these names
- 35:52that may or may not coordinate with what you actually do as
- 35:56your job, which can then only make it murky or when you go to
- 36:00hire somebody, you know, you go out to hire a director of
- 36:04recruiting, you know, to replace John yet.
- 36:07See will. But will you look at the, the
- 36:10actual job duties of maybe? What might Mark diet horn?
- 36:15Does that might be more in line with the director of recruiting,
- 36:19where, then you might be looking at a director of player
- 36:21Personnel the higher but then you have to do another title
- 36:24switch, it just gets kind of convoluted and it gets kind of
- 36:28confusing. So I never tried to get bogged
- 36:31down into the titles because I think a lot A lot of those are
- 36:34just resume builders and, you know, reasons to give people
- 36:39additional income, you know, to give them an additional raise or
- 36:43a benefit. So I can try not to get bogged
- 36:46down on that stuff. But I do think what we are
- 36:48seeing right now is the early Foundation.
- 36:51It might take years, honestly, with covid and everything and
- 36:54financial issues. But I think we're seeing the
- 36:57foundation being laid for Virginia Tech, splitting out
- 36:59there, recruiting duties, and I don't think it can hurt.
- 37:02I think it can only help me. And after a lot of great points
- 37:06there from Evan, talking about the support staff and the
- 37:09recruiting stuff, take a look at the second part, we talked about
- 37:13perception. Christina Garnett gets into The
- 37:16Branding of Virginia Tech and it's a really interesting take
- 37:19here and she's someone that's offered multiple times reaching
- 37:23out to the program, but obviously, if you kind of take a
- 37:27look, what's happened. She recorders back in April,
- 37:29things have changed in the last three months.
- 37:31Like maybe they've been listening to some of the stuff
- 37:33she advised. The other thing is that, I find
- 37:38that if you look on social and you look at the hashtags and
- 37:43where the hashtags are being used, the hashtags, actually
- 37:47have the best response when it's done by the recruits and then
- 37:51when it's done by the commitments.
- 37:53So when they're announcing and they are aligning themselves
- 37:57with this, so it it becomes a part of the recruitment story
- 38:04less. So, And like the current story
- 38:07of the team, if you look at them like like for engagement wise,
- 38:12if it makes more sense because that's how their recruits are
- 38:16identifying themselves and there's so many questions like
- 38:20oh, you're committing to Virginia Tech.
- 38:21Cool. But what's a hokie being able to
- 38:23have rally cry? A hashtag dissociates with.
- 38:27This is kind of who I am and the hard hat.
- 38:31Mentality feels very much in line of what would be our
- 38:34version of Lunch pail, what would be this version?
- 38:38And so, I understand where that comes from the hard smart tough.
- 38:43I don't like, just because UVA did the same thing if like, the
- 38:48next season and we made fun of it.
- 38:50And it was, it was three words and I was like, yeah, it's still
- 38:58a homework football card, it doesn't.
- 39:02And so I think the Then why the lunch pail and Beamer ball and
- 39:07Terrordome matter. Is that their actions that back
- 39:11up. Those words, there are receipts.
- 39:15Yeah, so using hashtags for hard hat, like hard hat, mentality
- 39:19and grit and hard. Smart, Tha that doesn't really
- 39:22carry anything. Until there's something that
- 39:25accompanies it. Like, if you say Terrordome, you
- 39:28don't hear Terror Dome. You actually feel like what
- 39:32that's like As in your mind like, it comes with weights,
- 39:37like it carries stuck with it and that's the point of
- 39:40branding, if the some of the best Brands, it's not the word.
- 39:45It's what the, what comes with the word, it's what weight
- 39:49carries that think about, think about movies or your favorite
- 39:53song, or your favorite concert, or your favorite.
- 39:56Like if you got them, if I say McDonald's right now, You're
- 40:02probably going to think about what you're going to order.
- 40:04What's your go-to order or you might smell the fries.
- 40:08But you have something that comes along with the word, it
- 40:10might even just be the jingle, but the word on its own doesn't
- 40:14like it doesn't exist by itself, it carries weight with it.
- 40:19So the thing is is that for Branding they need to continue
- 40:24these until they are able to create with it.
- 40:29Or they need to embrace. What they what?
- 40:37They let go. Which was like, when you think
- 40:41of the lunch pail, I think of all the Times They carried it, I
- 40:44think of watching them putting like the grass.
- 40:47Yes. Like, it's not just lunch pail
- 40:51to me. It's like, I think a beamer ball
- 40:53their specific plays. Yeah.
- 40:56That come into your head. It's not the word.
- 40:58Like that's the thing about branding is people want to put
- 41:00like a word be like this sounds fancy.
- 41:02Like that. That's not the point.
- 41:04It needs to evoke an emotional response because that's what
- 41:08care. Aries, that's what creates
- 41:10connection. Another Christine has talked a
- 41:13little bit about how our branding is perceived by folks
- 41:16being recruited and by fans. Let's let Dwight Vic talk a
- 41:21little bit more about the perception that this coaching
- 41:24staff has amongst the fanbase amongst recruits and how that
- 41:29plays a role in the perception of the program as a whole.
- 41:33Absolutely listen. If I wasn't tied with Lauren
- 41:38Johnson, he's the best high school coach the state of
- 41:40Virginia, okay? You know, I'm saying.
- 41:46So like this guy Lauren, you get a couple of Holland spring,
- 41:50guys, because here's the funny thing about a perception again,
- 41:53two guys, I know Lauren Johnson his players, uh, Greg doors and
- 41:59Kevon Wallace wanted to be Hokies, and look what they did
- 42:03on the Collegiate level. Just look.
- 42:06I remember when I remember when Kevon got the call from Clemson?
- 42:10He was like, no, I want. I want to go.
- 42:11I'm all about today, trust me, trust me.
- 42:14I know this for the be Lauren Johnson and I are tight.
- 42:17He dated my sister only football player of my teammate, I let
- 42:20date my sister that's all he's married.
- 42:24Now to another girl named Kim and they had a beautiful family
- 42:27including a son who take offered the car stop.
- 42:31Yeah. So did the day it was he got to
- 42:33do that like tech tech. You got to get those guys that
- 42:37want to be Hokies that maybe the had three stars and Terminal
- 42:42building, and eventually, you create momentum and those
- 42:45pipelines. You saw in the late 90s and
- 42:47early 2000s. Those pipelines from Western
- 42:51Branch from Deep Creek, from Phoebus, from Hampton, from
- 42:53Bethel, you know, from Western Branch.
- 42:57You know, the Holly Springs the Hopkins Brothers Macho because
- 43:01they saw their older teen years in juniors going there, and they
- 43:05say, wow, they're playing, they're happy, I'm gonna go into
- 43:08and then then what happens is you're winning text already
- 43:11going to kill Lit when it comes to food lodging presentation
- 43:15because it's a beautiful campus. That sells itself.
- 43:17You don't the crowd Hokie Nation, the loved a show.
- 43:21Now, you got a formula for success, and I think that's
- 43:25that's the relationships right now.
- 43:27And I think to be fair to Fuente and his staff, the Dead period
- 43:32covid. You know, tap who would had a
- 43:35plan who I know he did. I talk to tap?
- 43:37That's my guy. I think they were going to be
- 43:41some great. Is done, but the Dead period has
- 43:43killed. Not just Tech, but a lot of
- 43:45colleges that need to get guys on campus versus a program, like
- 43:50Clemson in Ohio state that can sell itself.
- 43:52Yeah, but I think you get those guys in your walk on.
- 43:56You get these guys are even commit or guy, like Jordan
- 44:00Williams. You get those guys and playing
- 44:02well and they keep advocating because when they go back to
- 44:05that, when they go home for Thanksgiving and Christmas break
- 44:08and they go back home, they're going to recruit and soda
- 44:10program for you. Because when they're walking
- 44:13around the mall there at the basketball court in the weight
- 44:15room and you're like, that's Jordan Williams and he's got the
- 44:19tech tank top and shorts on these listings.
- 44:21Like, yeah, that's what happens. Nice to go back home and I mean,
- 44:27know me and Mike will go back home.
- 44:28Will you be at the old Coliseum all or New Market Mall here in
- 44:32the barbershop you walk in with your Virginia Tech, bowl game,
- 44:35sweat suit on your fitted cock to the side, your Bullring
- 44:38gleaming and your bag. You like, yo y'all I'll get like
- 44:42that. Yo was an awesome people like
- 44:45me. It is euphoric for the fans and
- 44:48the kids who are up next. That's how you create the
- 44:52connection that dynasty. That, that whole, I want to be a
- 44:56part of it. It can't just be a coach.
- 44:59It's got to be your perception, your players who are currently
- 45:03there, who would like, yo, like look at Oscar Smith, another
- 45:06pipeline, JC Coleman. He was on my on my, on my show
- 45:10and he talked about how He would come back and he got a lot of
- 45:14guys there. They come to Tech from Oscar
- 45:15Smith, you know. Yeah.
- 45:18Yeah. And you know he talked about
- 45:20covid and I feel like for a school like Virginia Tech for a
- 45:24team like Virginia Tech that's really trying to recapture some
- 45:27of that momentum on the recruiting Trail covid.
- 45:30Just was like the worst possible time because like I said,
- 45:33getting kids on campus is like it's part of the battle and
- 45:36being able to put tax plan in place for getting back in the
- 45:40high schools, the way it was done before.
- 45:41Nearly all of that was something that could have helped with that
- 45:45perception, with that momentum going into 21.
- 45:48And now, you know, we've got a dead period this now extended,
- 45:52what through the end of May. So yeah, I understand that, I
- 45:57don't. Yeah, I mean, I don't know.
- 46:00It's weird. I do think though, if we can
- 46:06hopefully have this spring game, I don't even know if that's
- 46:10going to happen or some type of showcase or something where Tech
- 46:16and get in front of somebody kids or vice versa.
- 46:19So I think you're going to get some more kids.
- 46:21I just love the changes, they've been doing in the offseason, I
- 46:25don't really get hype about a lot of stuff in the offseason
- 46:28because you never know. I mean you never know with
- 46:30attrition DUIs in eligibility academics, you just never know.
- 46:34I mean it's the that's what makes it beautiful the unknown,
- 46:38the unexpected. That's also sometimes when makes
- 46:40it painful and Judgmental because the unknown we don't
- 46:43know what we can build on which is why Vegas has so much money.
- 46:47But at the end of the day, I guess I do like the higher like
- 46:52the people who are in blacks were right now.
- 46:55Because I think you know, when that day period is they know,
- 46:59from what I know and talking to people Pearson pray those on
- 47:02that staff. We played together for years at
- 47:04Tech. That's my brother Justin
- 47:07Hamilton's my guy. I know they want to win and they
- 47:11get It and they were there, they know what it takes, but they're
- 47:14handcuffed right now to some degree with covid.
- 47:17It's a it's it's a tough situation and make no mistake
- 47:20about it, you know? I lost him close people to covid
- 47:23and I'm sure you guys know some stories as well.
- 47:25And may have lost a few. It is serious.
- 47:28I'm not going to get political, I don't know.
- 47:30It's it's real. You can feel like it's whatever
- 47:32hopes. I know, it's real and small
- 47:36businesses and a lot of people have been affected and I'm just
- 47:39praying and eventually gets contained and we get back. some
- 47:42normalcy because for me just you know, football and sports
- 47:46especially Virginia Tech Spring Game, all that stuff is
- 47:48therapeutic for me and so many other people and hopefully you
- 47:52know, we can get over this hump and get back to you know,
- 47:56getting guys in that stadium and seeing that place where I can
- 47:59again, 100%. We got to attend that first
- 48:04spring game, the first year of Jetson, Puentes 10 year and it
- 48:09was great me and this guy, we drove up, we drove back down,
- 48:12hit all the spots. I'm also a couple things.
- 48:15Why jump to my next question? You mentioned Jordan Williams, a
- 48:18lot of people get on to Wednesday like he doesn't have
- 48:21personality yada yada, whatever Jordan Williams said something.
- 48:24When he came back, he basically he said Tech was the runner-up.
- 48:27He's like the relationship I forged with coach for Dante, was
- 48:31it held a lot to me? And it was almost like a way he
- 48:34said and when I saw the opportunity you know Clemson's
- 48:38bringing people in and I'm seeing less opportunity.
- 48:42I still had the relationship with the head coach.
- 48:44So as you said before it matters and the perception our head
- 48:47coaches getting, maybe it's, maybe it shouldn't be that way
- 48:51because of those words from Jordan Williams, but you
- 48:54mentioned tap, now he's gone to the NFL of my 49ers, that's beat
- 48:58him. But man, let me tell you, Um
- 49:01they brought in your teammate. Somebody you have interviewed on
- 49:05Victory Life JC price. Yes sir.
- 49:07How do you feel about him coming in and you know I'm assuming
- 49:13he's going to probably pick up the reins of a lot of what
- 49:15Darryl was going to do. Jason price is a man's man, he's
- 49:19your defensive line Mommy, I can tell you right now.
- 49:22Jason price is a guy you want to play for and you know they
- 49:26upgraded because tap was energetic.
- 49:30Eric knowledgeable, insightful and was with it.
- 49:32You see the 49ers grab them so he knows what he's doing but to
- 49:36be fair he actually probably is in that same position and
- 49:40probably more knowledgeable and experienced because he's been
- 49:42coaching longer, he was on the staff and he led the way when
- 49:47JMU gave took one of the biggest upsets in college football
- 49:50history, the year Tech win. The ACC in 2010, their bike
- 49:53riding Ryan Williams. So at the end of the day, the
- 49:57guy knows tank and he can coach and you know, You don't you
- 50:01looking you, people say oh you know he was at a mid, you know,
- 50:04made Marshall look you don't make Marshall and JMU relevant
- 50:09by not knowing the landscape of the state and getting players
- 50:12that wanted and some should have gone to.
- 50:15Okay God, do your homework. When you talk about these guys
- 50:18on Twitter, JC price was it was definitely a great hire when it
- 50:23comes down to it, man. No Fuente.
- 50:27You know we all be critical man because it's tough out.
- 50:30On a ledger and he, you know the time out this past year against
- 50:33Liberty. Oh my gosh.
- 50:35I felt for him. I was pissed but I was hopeful,
- 50:39you know, I made a mistake. Yeah.
- 50:41I made mistakes as a player. I mean, how many times?
- 50:44You know it has a llama so bad when he got called for holding
- 50:47and they gave the winning touchdown.
- 50:48I mean, or he'll go, Shayne Graham, talked about that, on
- 50:52my, so he missed a field goal that would have wanted to beat
- 50:54us in Miami beat Miami, in Miami, in the winning in
- 50:57overtime, but he felt awful that whole week.
- 51:00At the end of the day, man, you know.
- 51:01Listen, it happens. I think the whole personality
- 51:05thing is tough because went a, when you, he doesn't, he doesn't
- 51:09come across well on TV. The same way dabbled as you know
- 51:14dabble you know to sometimes can be corny.
- 51:16That's me. He is you know, you know, but
- 51:20it's players love them and they'll you know, they'll go to
- 51:23bat for him and they fight for him.
- 51:25And he's able to convince guys that shouldn't come back to come
- 51:28back and pursue a national champions.
- 51:30Ship and and that and Fuente is just got to be him.
- 51:33And to be fair, you know, the Beamer you guys saw a late in
- 51:37his career when he was turning his head and dab it and dancing
- 51:40and dancing in the locker room and UVA.
- 51:43But being more didn't exist. When I was at tank, if you
- 51:48remember, he looked like he would kill somebody on the
- 51:57sidelines. Same word as JC Coleman and
- 52:02Brandon Flowers and Chris Ellis. God was not to be.
- 52:06We were there when he was building when he was on the hot
- 52:09seat. When he couldn't afford a laws,
- 52:12you guys understand something. That's what I'm saying looking
- 52:14for into now and if he stays and keeps winning, he'll be a lot
- 52:18different. Then you got to be careful when
- 52:20you compare because Beamer doesn't come across as man.
- 52:24This guy's killing a room. You know, that's not Beamer but
- 52:28the same time you See him. Now with his little dog, Frank,
- 52:32Hank, whatever, and he's walking around, he's cracking jokes and
- 52:35he's always been a funny guy that would roast you on the low
- 52:37and he's always been, you know, highly respected and just
- 52:40someone you want to be around and he was all, he's always been
- 52:43funny but you know, early in his career which I was there for, it
- 52:48wasn't fun and games. You know, after big wins.
- 52:51He might let's go and throw the fist in the air and hug, guys,
- 52:54whatever. I mean, we beat Miami for the
- 52:57fourth year in a row, in the old Orange Bowl went before It
- 53:00became Pro Player Stadium or whatever it's called now.
- 53:03I don't know. A name and Pizza Hut RS.
- 53:05I don't know what it's called but you know, we beat them back.
- 53:08Then I remember in a locker when I was elated and I'll hug them
- 53:11and I was just like cause we want.
- 53:12He was like, Hey, great, when you know, I was like, okay, you
- 53:15know, like he went he was he was different, you get older become
- 53:20a grand dad and Shane's now, a man and doing his, you your
- 53:23looser, you know, your job secure, you can you let your
- 53:27guard down a bit? You know, he wasn't doing the
- 53:29Nae Nae Ane. All that do Millie WAP and all
- 53:31that stuff, you know when we would are.
- 53:34So In fairness of Wednesday, he's not going to be doing all
- 53:40that right now. He's not going to come on TV and
- 53:43crack jokes because In fairness to him everything now on Twitter
- 53:48and social media is used against them even if he slips up,
- 53:53whether it's a timeout or he missed says someone's name or
- 53:57you know he's guarded about who he's going to start.
- 54:00You know, it's just going to be his, everything's, you know,
- 54:02we're on edge, because Hokie Nation.
- 54:04If there's a fan base, that deserves a national championship
- 54:07and deserves answers and deserves wins, its Hokie Nation.
- 54:11I mean, you look at the Red Sox before they got over the hump
- 54:15that Cubs the Cavaliers and basketball.
- 54:18Virginia Tech has suffered Decades of.
- 54:22We almost had them like the dollar and that insurance
- 54:24commercial. We have almost had it so many
- 54:26times the Matt Ryan You know, go back to my years, the temple
- 54:30game on the goal line, we're ranked 14th, we win that game,
- 54:34we jump on the top eight, you know, the loss against Kansas,
- 54:38you know in the Orange Bowl and Brandon Brandon or sit out the
- 54:41first half because of Team violation, rules Tech has been
- 54:45on the doorstep for years and now with the offense of talent
- 54:50and the offensive scheme, whether we want to admit it or
- 54:53not, we made it up in our mind that we're going to be in this
- 54:55National Championship especially when we come out the gate.
- 54:58In 2016, and take Clemson to The Verge and we get down there for
- 55:04what they said after the game, he's going to go for two and you
- 55:06got Bucky and I say, afford you like man, Clemson is Clemson and
- 55:10we won the coastal in his first year and we did it to myself
- 55:15with the expectations. So now, you know, I don't think
- 55:19Jordan Williams is mine, you know?
- 55:21Ask me. I don't think Ashley's line
- 55:23Richard Ashby. I don't think Pablo's.
- 55:25I don't think Stan Rogers a line.
- 55:27That's their coach. I think he's just guarded, I
- 55:30think he's just going to get, you know, be who he is.
- 55:34And I don't really care if he, you know, didn't speak.
- 55:38And just talk in Sign Language, I just need wins.
- 55:43You got to love the white and then all this takes, obviously,
- 55:48one of our coaches just a few days ago, got on Twitter and
- 55:53things happened. If you were there, you were
- 55:55there. But let's listen to Christine
- 55:58again talking about more how we are perceived on Twitter.
- 56:02And again it's one of those things that in the last few
- 56:05months things have changed. You're seeing different.
- 56:08We're not seeing the time tweets anymore.
- 56:10So again maybe they've been listening Let me ask this about
- 56:15Twitter. Yeah, and if you don't want to
- 56:18answer it, you don't have to give me a number grade that you
- 56:24would give the Virginia Tech football.
- 56:26Twitter account, number great, not letter.
- 56:29Number grade wondering 100. It's an 80.
- 56:34It's an 80 they're doing. Okay, I'm glad that they're,
- 56:38it's, it's their Twitter wears a tie.
- 56:47It's, it's to curated the copies to clean the scheduling's to
- 56:53like specific, even if it's a brand needs, what it needs to
- 56:58feel like there's a fan at the bank.
- 57:01Okay, so I'll go back to McDonald's because I know
- 57:03someone on their social media team and I love what they're
- 57:05doing. Some of the best stuff that
- 57:07McDonald's has been doing is they're being incredibly
- 57:10vulnerable and real and Talking about customer experience like
- 57:14one of the tweets that they did that they did that.
- 57:17I absolutely loved was it's never, how are you doing social
- 57:20media manager? It's always one.
- 57:21Is McRib coming back or is are you feeling okay you've barely
- 57:28touched the top of your cup because they were like you poke
- 57:31the the top like you poke the little bubbles.
- 57:33Okay. Another one was.
- 57:36Can I get? It feels so human and so you
- 57:41want. You want it to feel human, it
- 57:48needs to feel like the person who's doing the copy and who is
- 57:52typing, and seeing the same, seeing the same game that you
- 57:56are an ass prostrated when you're frustrated and happy when
- 57:59you're happy and it's just it's a lot of hashtags and it's a lot
- 58:03of emojis and it just doesn't feel authentic.
- 58:09Okay. And that's what it you're right.
- 58:43And you just that is just such a great analogy to what our
- 58:48Twitter is. And and I'm going to say what I
- 58:51said a couple seconds ago. This is a football, Twitter we
- 58:55nice wear your tie very cordial sport.
- 59:00It's pop. It's hitting each other, it's a
- 59:03lot. But let's also compare it to a
- 59:06know, we've talked about Mike young earlier but let's go.
- 59:08Here Hokies Football Twitter account with the Hokies men's
- 59:13basketball, Twitter account and the type of Engagement that they
- 59:19were getting this season and the type of tweets that they were
- 59:22sending out and how those were tracking with the fan base and
- 59:27it's night and day. And I know who runs that
- 59:31account. And I they're younger and they
- 59:36are passionate about the team. Mmmmm.
- 59:39Yeah, and it reads it reads that way.
- 59:42I mean there's I also love the fact that I love that there
- 59:47doesn't always have to be there, doesn't always have to be a
- 59:51graphic, okay? And you can be playful with
- 59:55Emoji playful with gifts. And you can, I love that there
- 1:00:00is it just feels like I can tell a fan is running the basketball
- 1:00:07account. It feels like they're watching
- 1:00:11the game with us. Yep.
- 1:00:13Yep. And I am also a fan of if you
- 1:00:17can do short, copy always do short.
- 1:00:19It's so much easier. Like it's the shorter.
- 1:00:25It is. The more likely it is to come
- 1:00:27across as healthy and get to the point, the more copy there is
- 1:00:33the more it feels didactic and serious.
- 1:00:36Like I don't need it to be serious.
- 1:00:38Like height me up like make it, make it feel special.
- 1:00:42Let me, let me know what you're doing, and then I like that,
- 1:00:47they, I like that both of them that both accounts are starting
- 1:00:50to share, like, third-party content, but I think there's
- 1:00:53opportunities to do something really cool.
- 1:00:55Like, for example, I would love it.
- 1:00:59If they brought back one of like, find an old, find an older
- 1:01:05and older player, alumni who are really good.
- 1:01:09Twitter who get it, have them do a take over for the game, okay?
- 1:01:15Account for the day, it'll give it'll get flavor, it'll feel
- 1:01:19very different. People who've never turned in
- 1:01:21before, will turn in to say hi. I think, I think there's just so
- 1:01:25many opportunities to be able to do that.
- 1:01:28The other thing that I think was a missed opportunity was there
- 1:01:31weren't a lot of players that were, there were a lot of people
- 1:01:36who were able to watch the game last year and There were a
- 1:01:39couple people who were able to go and did like a few minute
- 1:01:41lives. But what I think would have been
- 1:01:44really, really, really cool. Is they because they ask for
- 1:01:49money like can you will take your money and you just like
- 1:01:53forgive your seat. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:56What if you did a private like what if you did a video you
- 1:02:00linked it and you have a camera from one specific seat, it could
- 1:02:05be at the 50-yard line and you just have someone recording live
- 1:02:09and you get access to that to that feed.
- 1:02:12So you get to watch the game from that seat for the whole
- 1:02:14game. Instead of watching it on TV,
- 1:02:16you get to actually it's as close as To get to feeling like
- 1:02:18you're in the stadium and you pay extra for it, whatever you
- 1:02:22wanted to put for it. But you can call it like the
- 1:02:2450-yard, the 50-yard seat. Yeah, someone will be there and
- 1:02:28they'll move the cameras, the plays are happening, but you'll
- 1:02:32get to be as close as you can to being Lane.
- 1:02:35During all of that. I feel like that was a missed
- 1:02:37opportunity. I love the metaphor about our
- 1:02:42Twitter. Wearing a tie.
- 1:02:44Yeah, what about favorite metaphors from that episode?
- 1:02:48But let's pivot a little bit to how kind of covid impacted some
- 1:02:53of the off, the field stuff and some of the on the field stuff
- 1:02:57from the 2020 season. So Evan Watkins broke that down
- 1:03:02in our discussion with him back in February so we'll let him
- 1:03:05take off on that again here. Like I mentioned earlier if
- 1:03:09you're outside that top 400, guys going into the state of are
- 1:03:12going into your senior year with, as many kids didn't get to
- 1:03:15play their senior senior year with zero summer camps.
- 1:03:20I take a lot of that. Throw it out the window.
- 1:03:22You know, if you're a five-star five-star we all can see it.
- 1:03:25But if you're if you're a mid 3 star and a high three-star,
- 1:03:31what's the difference? If you're a low forestall, if
- 1:03:33you know, you're a an 87 and a 90 The difference between a 3
- 1:03:38star 4 star, there's really not that much difference.
- 1:03:42When you think when you add in the fact that there was no camps
- 1:03:45no spring workouts, and possibly no fall.
- 1:03:49So, you know, I think Virginia Tech signed some good football
- 1:03:52players in this class. The rankings won't necessarily
- 1:03:55reflected, as well, as I think it should.
- 1:03:58But I do think they did well adapting in this environment
- 1:04:03that was almost unable to be planned for.
- 1:04:07Let's go ahead and pick you back straight off of that because I
- 1:04:09feel like, you know, you hit hard on like, you know, not
- 1:04:12having the lot of senior tape for these guys not having really
- 1:04:16any of the Camp's. What guys, in this class, do you
- 1:04:20think had the biggest potential for that kind of offseason
- 1:04:23bumper that senior season bump? If we were operating business as
- 1:04:26usual? You know, I think in in state,
- 1:04:31you know, I look at a guy like like a Jalen strowman I think
- 1:04:34Jalen's strohman a very good football player and I think he
- 1:04:38was really coming into his own as a junior, obviously he has
- 1:04:42some advantages being Greg's little brother and and some of
- 1:04:45the guys he worked out with and trains with.
- 1:04:47He's got really good size range and speed.
- 1:04:50I think he probably would have been in line for one Jalen
- 1:04:52Jones. Another thousand yard receiver
- 1:04:55in at a Richmond now didn't play The best competition in the
- 1:05:00world. But if you can put together
- 1:05:02back-to-back thousand yard receiving years that's hard to
- 1:05:05deny. You know, guys like that.
- 1:05:07I think Kelly Lawson probably had the most outside.
- 1:05:11Yeah. If Kelly Lawson could camp and
- 1:05:15had a senior year before signing day, I would not be shocked if
- 1:05:20he was a four-star by some rankings.
- 1:05:22I mean you look at what he's done.
- 1:05:24You look at his first, you will do the body and you think like,
- 1:05:27you know, he And play anything. Is he?
- 1:05:29The next Tremaine? Is he the next?
- 1:05:31Amari bar know, you know, we don't really know right now, but
- 1:05:35you look at what he does in his workouts you look at and you
- 1:05:39don't think he was clocked. Was he clocked at 20?
- 1:05:42Please o'clock at 26 on one of the, one of his training videos?
- 1:05:46It was, it was Unreal, how fast he was moving on.
- 1:05:50One of the, the treadmills that clocks.
- 1:05:52It was it was it was it almost the equivalent of a Caleb
- 1:05:57Farley. And this guy, Guys got a much
- 1:06:00different type of body so you know, I think he's a guy that
- 1:06:04would have probably gone up a little bit in the rank.
- 1:06:08He's, you know, guy like DJ Harvey.
- 1:06:10I think DJ Harvey probably would have played his way up, if
- 1:06:12California was playing football in the in the fall, you know.
- 1:06:16I think You know, one guy I think that was held down and I
- 1:06:21don't really know why because he was super productive, but I
- 1:06:24think Kenji. Christian is somebody that also
- 1:06:26was kind of a victim of rankings where I feel like he's probably
- 1:06:32a four star talent. I think he's a really good
- 1:06:34running back. I think he maybe was overlooked
- 1:06:37a little bit because you're coming from the state of Alabama
- 1:06:41and you don't have an Auburn offer and you don't have an
- 1:06:43Alabama offer LSU. Yes, you was maybe within hours
- 1:06:49of offering and before their restrictions hit, you know, this
- 1:06:52is a guy that he's got, he's an SEC player and you know, he
- 1:06:56luckily for Virginia Tech. He didn't get you know, those
- 1:07:01three SEC offers that would have been a game-changer foreman and
- 1:07:05now he's he's headed to Blacksburg.
- 1:07:07I think he's a guy that a lot of people kind of Overlook, you
- 1:07:11know, I think Christian Moss is an interesting one, you know,
- 1:07:15everybody talked about Trey Kerby, Remember Trey Curry was
- 1:07:18committed to Virginia Tech for a little while for Star Trek.
- 1:07:21Very actually transferred to North Cobb for his senior year,
- 1:07:24they played together him, and Christian Moss, Christian
- 1:07:26Moscow, better wide receiver. Kristina Moss was was the top
- 1:07:31guy at North Cobb and he's a, he's a mid three-star guy, he's
- 1:07:35got great size, he's got really good range and he's just a guy
- 1:07:39that fell through the covid cracks.
- 1:07:40So, you know, I think when you look at it and you go through
- 1:07:43each of these players, you know, every year I try to look at at
- 1:07:47the commit and I think who is, who's a reach?
- 1:07:51Who's a guy that I can look at right now and say, I don't think
- 1:07:54they're going to play in, Virginia Tech.
- 1:07:55And when you look down their list right now, There's not a
- 1:07:59lot of those guys. There are some good ones you say
- 1:08:02there's some guys, you say might take it might take a year or two
- 1:08:06maybe three, maybe, you know, maybe they won't play until
- 1:08:08their upperclassmen but there's not a whole lot.
- 1:08:10You look at and you say, I don't see it, I don't know what
- 1:08:14they're seeing in the sky, I don't see it at all.
- 1:08:16So, you know, I think when you look at it that way, I think the
- 1:08:18Hokies, you know, I think they did they did as well as I think
- 1:08:22that they probably could under the circumstances of everything
- 1:08:25going around them covid and potentially the hot Little
- 1:08:29Justin Fuente. And you know, as much as covid
- 1:08:35did affect it affected the fan base that, well obviously
- 1:08:38affected the Hokie club and Christina, Garnet goes into it
- 1:08:42seems like the only time we were getting things from hockey club
- 1:08:45was, you know, right after right after a game, whether that be
- 1:08:49win or lose. So she sort of gives them what
- 1:08:52she'd visions and hopefully Cub can become.
- 1:08:54And again, it's great takes from her.
- 1:09:01It's the thing is that was that like and this is gonna sound
- 1:09:04really bad for any marketers on the, but they'll agree with me.
- 1:09:08Get in the head of your customer and really think about the
- 1:09:11customer experience. Like, you don't need a marketing
- 1:09:14class. You need to be able to think,
- 1:09:17like the person you want to Target really swim in that.
- 1:09:23Like you said, where are you going to be the most height, the
- 1:09:29most Pro Hokies the most loose with your wallet just before the
- 1:09:33start of a game that's before the start of the game.
- 1:09:35I'm excited for the leave it. If I'm sitting at home.
- 1:09:38I'm excited for what I'm about to watch.
- 1:09:40I'm engaged with the program as optimistic as I'm going to be is
- 1:09:44before just before that kickoff. Yep.
- 1:09:46Regardless of what happens win or lose the most optimistic.
- 1:09:49I'm probably going to be about this game is just before
- 1:09:51kickoff. Yeah.
- 1:09:53That's we're going to feel the best about the program.
- 1:09:55What I can do is you can even do it as like.
- 1:09:59I know that nonprofits can do this.
- 1:10:00I don't know if they'd be able to do it, but having like a text
- 1:10:03campaign like text, hashtag Hokies to five four, three, two,
- 1:10:08one, and you get 20 e, send $25. That is and I mean as we're
- 1:10:15moving forward, this whole thing with donations, we're going to
- 1:10:18need a lot more money coming in especially relative to the what
- 1:10:23people in the ACC or doing because we're already falling
- 1:10:27behind on that front, especially on the individual donation side
- 1:10:31of things. In terms of what we are putting
- 1:10:34funding wise into the program. We're about middle of the pack
- 1:10:38in terms of total money and we're towards like the back
- 1:10:42third. In terms of donations.
- 1:10:45We got to figure out something to get, get those in here and it
- 1:10:48and I know winning helps. But in lieu of that, we're going
- 1:10:52to need to figure out another way to get more folks engaged in
- 1:10:55the program, both with, you know, putting asses in seats at
- 1:11:00game but also putting money into the the into hope Club.
- 1:11:04Well, here's the thing, hokey Club, when you think about
- 1:11:08Hockey Club, what do you what is like your first thought drive
- 1:11:12for 25, but you know what, it should feel like.
- 1:11:15The hockey club should be ran like an ambassador program, not
- 1:11:19like an entry-level donation Point.
- 1:11:22That's what, that's what poke Club is.
- 1:11:23It's, it's here's your entry to becoming a donor to Virginia
- 1:11:28Tech football and that's not what it should be.
- 1:11:30It should be an ambassador program where everyone that gets
- 1:11:34to be a part of that is given tools that they can share their
- 1:11:38fan Hood. Here's the latest.
- 1:11:40Here's the latest graphic. We're going to give you that you
- 1:11:42can share in Social before anyone else?
- 1:11:44Here's a special. Banner that you can put for your
- 1:11:46Twitter and Facebook. Here's here's a Keepsake that
- 1:11:49you can have. Here's here's here's a free
- 1:11:52ticket to bring someone who's never been to a hoagie game like
- 1:11:56just it shouldn't feel like now it feels like it feels like
- 1:12:03Hokey Club is the token answer for.
- 1:12:05Do I do you support Virginia Tech football with your money
- 1:12:08and people say yes I'm a hoagie Club member that's it.
- 1:12:12Shouldn't feel like it's tied to money poke Club.
- 1:12:15Should never feel like it's tied to money.
- 1:12:18It should feel like that's your entry into becoming the person
- 1:12:23who gets to be on the field. The person who gets to help the
- 1:12:26person who gets to weave themselves into the history of
- 1:12:29Virginia Tech. It should feel like that is how
- 1:12:34you enter the community. It should feel emotional, it
- 1:12:38shouldn't be tied to money. Should be tied to emotion.
- 1:12:41Like what I would love to say honestly as soon as things are
- 1:12:46open and as soon as It's a for us all to congregate.
- 1:12:49I would love for there to be a field day at Lane.
- 1:12:53So y'all go. Yep that'd be really cool.
- 1:12:55Just be in that Stadium again. You can have layers, you can
- 1:12:59have past players, you can have the staff but it literally is
- 1:13:04like the whole point. The whole point is you go and
- 1:13:10you get to stay in on the field and you get to meet some of your
- 1:13:13favorite players and you get to hang out and hug your friends
- 1:13:16that you would normally use Haven't seen in months but used
- 1:13:19to tailgate with all the time just do like a fifty dollar, a
- 1:13:23ticket field day and you get to go and you get to hang out and
- 1:13:28you get to hug your hokey friends.
- 1:13:32And what I like about what she said there is that we're
- 1:13:35starting to see a little bit more of that come into play.
- 1:13:40As some of, you know, you know, we've been pushing some of the
- 1:13:44Hokey Club Ambassador elements into our sign off here, where
- 1:13:50we're encouraging you to join the Hokie Club.
- 1:13:53Let's reach for excellence and Achieve those goals at the same
- 1:13:57time. Let's get another take here from
- 1:14:00Evan Watkins on it. Another issue that's going to I
- 1:14:03think rear its head here very soon and we're already starting
- 1:14:06to see some of it but it's the scholarship issue that resulted
- 1:14:10from the essentially 2020 being a free year for everyone.
- 1:14:14So he breaks down, not just that what we're looking at, starting
- 1:14:20this year, but that going into next year is going to be really
- 1:14:25when this issue starts to be a problem because of those
- 1:14:29numbers. And because of having to get
- 1:14:31back to B5. Yeah, you know and here I could
- 1:14:34throw a couple numbers out at you because it's 24/7.
- 1:14:37Sports ran out really good article on this recently that
- 1:14:40FBS college. Football teams signed more than
- 1:14:44400 fewer recruits to Scholarships in 2021 that they
- 1:14:47did for 2020 and 2019, holy cow. So that that is fairly
- 1:14:55eye-opening. I would say.
- 1:14:57Now 2022, might be worse and that That's, you know, that's
- 1:15:02where things can start to get a little scary but we'll start,
- 1:15:05we'll start with 2021. So when you're in 2021 when
- 1:15:10you're, you know, when you're trying to to recruit 21:8 covid
- 1:15:15hits. You are, if you are not one of
- 1:15:20the top will estimate will round to 400.
- 1:15:24If you are not one of the top 400 players in this in the
- 1:15:26country, your rankings may not matter, kind of at all, to be
- 1:15:32honest, because the big ranking periods for you outside.
- 1:15:36That top 400 would be junior film.
- 1:15:39Eval spring workouts, summer camps senior season.
- 1:15:46Now you pick players in the state of Virginia, they had to,
- 1:15:50they had, they had their junior season.
- 1:15:53There's no Spring football, no spring workouts, at all, you
- 1:15:57have no summer camps at all. You have no senior season.
- 1:16:02Before signing day three out of the four ranking opportunities.
- 1:16:07You had are gone. Now, that also means three out
- 1:16:13of the four, major scholarship opportunities.
- 1:16:16You had are now gone as well. So you you not only you not only
- 1:16:24could be somebody that all through the cracks, you are also
- 1:16:28somebody that even if a school takes a chance on you, That
- 1:16:34school is taking a major Risk by offering you a scholarship.
- 1:16:39If you haven't played football in a year, they haven't seen
- 1:16:42you, they haven't see you on campus to see, are you really 64
- 1:16:47or are you 61? Are you really 220 pounds?
- 1:16:51Are you really 180 pounds? You know, they can't get you out
- 1:16:56of Camp to say, you say you ran a 44 and we clocked you at a 49.
- 1:17:00So, you're taking a major Risk by offering those scholarships.
- 1:17:06Now, on top of that, what you have to balance out and a lot of
- 1:17:10college coaches did balance this out.
- 1:17:12Is, do we take that risk on a borderline recruit?
- 1:17:19We're not talking the five-star, we're talking the the mid
- 1:17:22three-star guy that may or may not pan out, or do we hit the
- 1:17:26transfer portal because the transfer portal has, you know, A
- 1:17:30lot of talent in it of guys who have verified Heights and
- 1:17:34weights have verified game game film for most of them, or at
- 1:17:39least college, practice film, and these are guys that won't
- 1:17:44tie up a scholarship for five years.
- 1:17:45If they don't pan out, these are guys that you could tie the
- 1:17:49scholarship for 1 to 3 years. And then when all of this maybe
- 1:17:53starts to normalize, then you go back and you recruit back, fill
- 1:17:57that position, you back recruit that number. so you know, when
- 1:18:02you when you look at it through that way, if you are not a top
- 1:18:06of the board guy for most schools, You run the risk, ran
- 1:18:12the risk of not having an opportunity to play at the
- 1:18:14level, you want to play at. You may have to drop down a
- 1:18:16level, or you maybe didn't get a chance to to sign with anybody
- 1:18:21yet. Because even when you think of
- 1:18:24dropping down a level, some of those schools, you know, Texas
- 1:18:29state is a great example. I know they're not Regional to
- 1:18:32us but they're a great example that they looked at this year
- 1:18:36and said you know they kind of just said screw it You know, 0,
- 1:18:41we can get another weekly zero. They took zero high school kids
- 1:18:46and only recruited the transfer portal.
- 1:18:48But you know what that does also for them?
- 1:18:50That that some people may not even think of when they hear
- 1:18:53that, think that's ridiculous. But what they did is they just
- 1:18:57postponed a year because you know what we're looking at now,
- 1:19:02you know, looking at that with 2021 covid aside, you know,
- 1:19:05let's say covid ends today and life goes by back normal and the
- 1:19:10Dead period ends and everything. Cool, everything's good.
- 1:19:15The NCAA extended scholarship limits for the 2021 season for
- 1:19:20players to hold over you know seniors get a chance to play
- 1:19:23again down to freshman getting their freshman year back.
- 1:19:26Okay, that's great. So we extend that out, you know,
- 1:19:30theoretically you could have 25 senior scholarship seniors.
- 1:19:33Most people, don't you, theoretically could see what
- 1:19:37that gives, you 110 scholarships theoretically for 24 this year.
- 1:19:44But after this year, you have to be an 85 scholarship starting
- 1:19:49next year. How do you get there?
- 1:19:53You know, I talked to I talked to one of our talk to one of our
- 1:19:57guys, in the industry today. You know, one of our national
- 1:20:00guys were 24/7 Sports and he I told him I said, you know, I
- 1:20:03think it's crazy. The NCAA needs to do something,
- 1:20:07you know, in my opinion they need to extend it not as far,
- 1:20:10but extended a little bit and I was like, Virginia Tech for
- 1:20:15example, you know, I ran an article two weeks ago, Virginia
- 1:20:18Tech has roughly eight scholarships open right now for
- 1:20:222022. Now, that will obviously expand.
- 1:20:25We all know that, that eight is going to grow 1517, maybe even
- 1:20:30up to 20 with attrition and transfer portal and things like
- 1:20:33that. But just Today about 8 and he
- 1:20:38said, there are teams out there right now that are - there are
- 1:20:43teams out there right now that have to lose players on
- 1:20:46Scholarship today to sign anyone in 2022.
- 1:20:52So you know, when we look at this and we say, oh they signed
- 1:20:55400 less people this year in 2021 due to covid and that's
- 1:21:01terrible. I could see it exponentially
- 1:21:06larger in 2022 because College college programs don't have the
- 1:21:10space. Yeah, so what one of two things
- 1:21:14will have to happen. You are going to have to see
- 1:21:16massive attrition and nobody likes to talk about attrition
- 1:21:21attrition isn't always bad players entering.
- 1:21:23The portal is not always bad. I think, you know, Virginia Tech
- 1:21:27fans in particular especially what has happened over the last
- 1:21:30few years and some of the guys leaving think people leaving the
- 1:21:34transport transfer portal is a major problem, but you have to
- 1:21:38look at it, multiple ways, some people leave the transfer portal
- 1:21:41because they're unhappy some people leave the transfer portal
- 1:21:44because they want more playing time or better opportunity, some
- 1:21:47people leave the transfer portal, early Levi, the transfer
- 1:21:50portal. I was just simply because of
- 1:21:54academics or an off the field issue.
- 1:21:57Some people will leave to be closer to home some people.
- 1:22:00Decide, nobody really wants to talk about, are asked to leave
- 1:22:05the that. Don't mean people act like that,
- 1:22:07don't happen, that happens. People are asked to leave your
- 1:22:10scholarship, may not be retained.
- 1:22:12If it is retained, you may not see the field, you may not play.
- 1:22:16It may be worth it for you to find an opportunity elsewhere
- 1:22:20and you know, a lot of That that happens everywhere.
- 1:22:23Now you're going to add it on top of that, moving forward, the
- 1:22:27scholarship number crunch that every school is dealing with.
- 1:22:31We have to free up space, somehow?
- 1:22:33Yeah, you're going to deal with the money of it, you know, I
- 1:22:37heard, you know, every what does it every 10?
- 1:22:41Scholarships, every 10 scholarships is roughly a
- 1:22:44million dollars. So, you know, if you're carrying
- 1:22:48over a lot of scholarships, you're carrying over a lot of
- 1:22:50money. So some schools are saying, hey,
- 1:22:54we know, the NCAA said you can carry over and go over 85 this
- 1:22:58year, but we can't afford it, so we're not doing it.
- 1:23:00So You know, some of those players may have to find other
- 1:23:03homes and then we're going to add the the Colossal mess that I
- 1:23:08foresee coming of players entering the transfer portal
- 1:23:11because we were at 2021 signee. We never saw the coach's face to
- 1:23:16face. We never step foot on campus,
- 1:23:19before we signed. And we hate it here.
- 1:23:21We're in a bad situation. We're going to see that become
- 1:23:25very apparent and I think it'll be very apparent, very quickly.
- 1:23:30I wouldn't be As you see a lot of freshmen all over the
- 1:23:32country, start to enter the portal after getting on campus
- 1:23:35and being there for a few months.
- 1:23:36And realizing, you know, maybe what I was sold in recruiting
- 1:23:41isn't reality, you know. Maybe, you know, I thought I was
- 1:23:46coming into this, you know, great opportunity.
- 1:23:50You know, I thought maybe I was going to be a guy that had a
- 1:23:53shot at early playing time to find out that I'm fourth team on
- 1:23:56the depth chart. When I get here, maybe I'm a guy
- 1:23:58who never realized And how small this campus is, or how big this
- 1:24:04campus is, or how far away from home.
- 1:24:07It is, you know, what do I do? They, you know, and I have to
- 1:24:11live on campus for a year and they tell me, I can't have a car
- 1:24:14and how do I, you know, how do I do it?
- 1:24:15The typical College, you know, things and you have to learn and
- 1:24:20adjust when you get there and I think we're going to see that
- 1:24:25fairly quickly because I'm just lie, the NCAA kind of force, the
- 1:24:31hand of recruits to sign sight. Unseen for the majority of them
- 1:24:37and I think a lot of colleges took advantage of that and said
- 1:24:40hey if you don't sign with us or you don't commit to us, now
- 1:24:42you're not going to have a spot, you know, nobody else.
- 1:24:45No other schools may not take you lock in your spot now and
- 1:24:49they may not be in love with the choice that they made.
- 1:24:53Alright, lastly folks got into a lot of fun and In discussing the
- 1:24:58rivalries that we had with, not only for jenya Miami, but also
- 1:25:04West Virginia, which is obviously big this year because
- 1:25:06it can be the first time we played in Morgantown and close
- 1:25:09to 20 years, the white getting this.
- 1:25:12You just heard the passion and knowing the importance and much
- 1:25:17as people want to knock. Miami's always will be an actual
- 1:25:20brain. Like he says, we do need UVA to
- 1:25:23be better and it's my opinion. If they get a little better,
- 1:25:26it's going to help out everything but here's the
- 1:25:28whites. Take on that from back in March,
- 1:25:31let me ask this in and I want to kind of phrases to, right way
- 1:25:35because in when we were coming up Miami and UVA the rivalry
- 1:25:40games, when those games were played, it was a big deal.
- 1:25:43It was, I mean, when you got there 94 to roughly probably
- 1:25:4706-07. Those games were Wars and me and
- 1:25:52Brian been talking, like, do you feel that whether Miami or UVA
- 1:25:56or maybe a semblance of both like those rivalry games, get
- 1:26:00back to where they were 20 years ago?
- 1:26:02We're like you mentioned the Miami game when it's a night
- 1:26:07game, both teams are in the top 10 or the Commonwealth Cup game.
- 1:26:10When you know like 95 when that happened when you know, both
- 1:26:17teams have 10 wins. And both teams are trying to get
- 1:26:20to the Sugar Bowl and both teams ranked in the top 15.
- 1:26:25What do you think is more important?
- 1:26:26That helps Elevate pecs program? Is it both or do you have a
- 1:26:30preference? Well let me just add this real
- 1:26:33quick. You forgot to mention West
- 1:26:36Virginia because West Virginia was all up in that and you can
- 1:26:40make an argument as now you can make the argument to West
- 1:26:42Virginia, Virginia Tech robbery during the 90s and the early
- 1:26:462000s before Tech jump to the ACC and go forward.
- 1:26:48Probably better games and more important than the Virginia Tech
- 1:26:52UVA robbery. But during my era to your point
- 1:26:56that you VA Virginia Tech robbery was epic and the Miami
- 1:27:00robbery with tech for years was epic.
- 1:27:03It was it was Bloodshed, it was, you know, Braveheart near the
- 1:27:06end of the movie. It was real in order is my
- 1:27:11preference. I would like oh this is going to
- 1:27:15make some people mad. I like it when taking you here
- 1:27:19both good because I grew up in that and it's good for the kids.
- 1:27:23Great for the Commonwealth. People look at me funny on
- 1:27:26camera. When I celebrate UVA not that
- 1:27:29they are celebrating wins but I'm like hey that's a good one.
- 1:27:32That's good for us. I mean if it's just better you
- 1:27:37know Jonathan McLaughlin was like Hey everybody post your
- 1:27:40comment with you know, draining out the cup.
- 1:27:42Up and I said, oh, I lost my last two years you were here and
- 1:27:45he couldn't even fathom that. And I said, hey man, they were
- 1:27:49really good. Y'all beat some UV.
- 1:27:51A team that couldn't be Centerville High School on the
- 1:27:54road, okay? So you don't calm down soaking
- 1:27:58me, you know, because my UVA battles, we were going against,
- 1:28:02you know, Dingo and Patrick Carney and Wally Raynor and the
- 1:28:06farrier brothers. And, you know, some studs, Aaron
- 1:28:09Brooks, you know, UVA was raining Teens, we ranked 18th or
- 1:28:14vice versa. It wasn't what you see now.
- 1:28:18So if you have both programs Beamer said it best in George
- 1:28:23Wells, co-signed it is enough talent in this state for both
- 1:28:26teams to get it and win. But both teams are not getting
- 1:28:29especially to be fair UVA. You know, UVA is the one that's
- 1:28:33fallen short. The last 16 17 years, not Tech
- 1:28:38and grow and I know tech fans are going to a smirk when I say
- 1:28:41this. I think grow got to out-of-state
- 1:28:44happy during his day. He got coach two years and he
- 1:28:46just kept going up to New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania because
- 1:28:50he was in New York Jet coach. He didn't really look Holly upon
- 1:28:53Virginia talent and I think that came back to bite them because
- 1:28:56Tech was full of Commonwealth guys.
- 1:28:59So I think you got to get guys in state.
- 1:29:01I think Miami and Tech will always have that rivalry because
- 1:29:06of what we did during my era, and it's funny too, because
- 1:29:10Miami has a lot of coaching Carousel with in there.
- 1:29:12Program and nobody lives off, mystique and manufacture height,
- 1:29:17and history lessons more than the Hurricanes of Miami between
- 1:29:21Michael Irvin and Warren Sapp. We get more history lessons
- 1:29:24about the you, but less productivity on the field.
- 1:29:27So it doesn't match up. It's more.
- 1:29:29So let me look at this 3430. So I can get what you're talking
- 1:29:31about because you guys are the king of underachieving, you
- 1:29:36know. Soda reality is, as I mean, is
- 1:29:39constantly going to be a robbery or Tech because they're too.
- 1:29:42Two Biggie's foes and they gave you great.
- 1:29:45I mean, if you, if you still have the ESPN classic channel to
- 1:29:50this day, I get, hey, you're on or even ESPNU, they always show
- 1:29:54tons of tech UV. I mean, Miami rivalry games from
- 1:29:58the 90s. Hey Stephen!
- 1:30:01Yeah they do basic network was in those nannies, games act like
- 1:30:06in the summer last year. Yeah, and obviously, yeah.
- 1:30:12But the UVA one, you need UVA to get better or like to push tag
- 1:30:18but at the same time, it's a fine line.
- 1:30:21You don't want them to become better because it can hurt you.
- 1:30:23So it's kind of like how you VA helped us get into the ACC.
- 1:30:28You know, you kind of want both programs there.
- 1:30:32So I'm a Virginian, you know, I I love the Richmond area.
- 1:30:37I love Southwest Virginia, I love Northern Virginia and I
- 1:30:40love obviously. My home 757 and I like, you
- 1:30:45know, I mean look you guys fall. We follow each other on Twitter
- 1:30:49at the end of the day, look how great that you VA Virginia Tech
- 1:30:53basketball robbery is right now, and how it's been the last five
- 1:30:58years with buzz and Bennett. And now, young and Bennett who
- 1:31:03love and respect each other and look what they're doing for both
- 1:31:06programs and it's great, basketball and damn, right?
- 1:31:10It looks good. Seeing you be in Tech, the top
- 1:31:12of The ACC, I like that. I want, what Carolina Duke had?
- 1:31:16I'm tired of it. Why would, why can't we have
- 1:31:19that for the coastal? You know, I mean, yy-you can't
- 1:31:23be afraid of competition, you know?
- 1:31:27I mean, it's cool to brag about the streak and look at the
- 1:31:31little means, and Mike and Lundy and crying with Jordan face and
- 1:31:35I am. Okay, yeah, it's fun.
- 1:31:37But you really you really are you really bragging, you know,
- 1:31:41when You have a Midfield altercation between 25 and 16s
- 1:31:47and microbrew has leader. Come back to Bucky Hodges.
- 1:31:50I was in the stadium. It was a great win but I left
- 1:31:53after, you know, the Smoke Clears and you happy you beat
- 1:31:55your rival for the whatever Ting time your six and six.
- 1:31:59Yep, it is 5 and 7. So what are you really happy
- 1:32:02about? It's embarrassing.
- 1:32:05It's not something to brag about because everyone outside of
- 1:32:08Virginia, doesn't give a damn You know, and that's what people
- 1:32:11need to remind himself of you want to be part of something
- 1:32:14bigger than just the conference game.
- 1:32:17You know I'm saying II? And I'm not I don't have
- 1:32:20Alabama, Clemson, Alabama, Auburn fatigue, I just, I have,
- 1:32:24I have fatigue when it comes to being irrelevant like, you know,
- 1:32:28when you wake up after a great win on Sunday morning and you're
- 1:32:32eating your breakfast and you you getting your fantasy
- 1:32:35lineups, ready you like, okay? Okay, let me turn the city's
- 1:32:38highlights what he would say about this.
- 1:32:40Tech UVA game on College, you know game night.
- 1:32:43They just sold a score you know buddy.
- 1:32:45Nobody cares. Yeah.
- 1:32:46Body cares. He plays a game.
- 1:32:48Here's the final score. Yeah.
- 1:32:50There LOL. And another nude.
- 1:32:52Virginia Tech holds on the, a, they'll go to the ball game.
- 1:32:56That comes on Comcast on December 19th at five, you know?
- 1:33:00I mean, that's what happens. You know, I do, and I'm not
- 1:33:04mocking my program, I just think sometimes we need a reality,
- 1:33:06check, what we once had and what we need to get back to.
- 1:33:09And And Beyond and, you know, the answer your question again,
- 1:33:13I just think if it's my choice is Virginia Tech UVA.
- 1:33:16Although they what you want. But when you consistently beat
- 1:33:21Miami like, we've done and we've done it before, the brand of
- 1:33:25Miami is still relevant when you beat Miami.
- 1:33:27Still turns heads. Yeah, you know, like we did last
- 1:33:32was it last year? Oh yeah.
- 1:33:34When we ask that the Duke de barco and and then came down to
- 1:33:39my Miami game. Mm and they beat him, you know,
- 1:33:42or that year went to Corey Harris and Kirk her, she
- 1:33:45declared that you as back and tie rod and Jared Boykins beat
- 1:33:49him, 31 27, you know, in the rain game, SmackDown in the rain
- 1:33:52and Lain under that game follow but to you doing in my house,
- 1:33:57got a question but I'm gonna make it to your point of the
- 1:34:00Miami game. We had just gotten curb-stomped
- 1:34:03by Duke. I was still the 3:30 ABC game
- 1:34:08that year we were Or two and two, just lost by 42 a bad dude
- 1:34:14team. But that game was an actual game
- 1:34:16and I think you're right. And I'm with you, you won't, you
- 1:34:19VA Tech to be good but I think you agree, right?
- 1:34:22Yeah. I'm right there with you.
- 1:34:23I think when UVA is good, the program's push each other.
- 1:34:28Yeah, I think that's what kind of came out when when you were
- 1:34:31building the program at Virginia Tech in the 90s.
- 1:34:33And I feel like that is kind of what helped Propel Virginia Tech
- 1:34:38to what it became and what it was throughout the 2000's.
- 1:34:40And I feel like UVA being down and then some of the other
- 1:34:44things that have changed on the national recruiting front, you
- 1:34:47know, we just were not where we were and I feel like getting
- 1:34:50some of that back, getting some of that competing for the same,
- 1:34:54you know, top 10 players in the state every year.
- 1:34:57Now getting that back would be good.
- 1:35:00You know what I sold? Mike Vick on coming to Tech.
- 1:35:03I said, imagine if you go to Tech and Ronald Kray goes to UVA
- 1:35:06and arrival, you guys had in high school continues.
- 1:35:09Oh hey. Lucky, love that notion, of
- 1:35:13course. We all know Ronald went to UNC
- 1:35:14because of their basketball and football program later, Mike Mac
- 1:35:18on, then Dean Smith left. But, you know what?
- 1:35:20Also, to your point UVA, ultimately indirectly because of
- 1:35:27their inconsistency with grow in London and the streak and them
- 1:35:31started losing it. Do you know when Duke was still
- 1:35:34inferior before, you know, they really got, you know, pretty
- 1:35:37good program. It resulted in Virginia Tech,
- 1:35:39because Coming complacent. Because you your instinct
- 1:35:44robbery is almost a guaranteed win and you're still losing
- 1:35:49recruits, but you're losing to a higher state and but you're
- 1:35:51getting pretty much you still getting David Wilson, Logan,
- 1:35:55Thomas and Tyrod Taylor, so you're okay.
- 1:35:59And then, you know, it didn't really push you, it didn't
- 1:36:03because because again, Beamer had to get guys like myself, and
- 1:36:07kid knocks, and Dawn, and Toni Morrison.
- 1:36:09And all those guys that come in, Cuz you VA had George Wells and
- 1:36:14it was, my UVA was winning eleven games.
- 1:36:16Only have one ten win season in the history of their program.
- 1:36:20But at the end of the day, they were winning in the ACC and they
- 1:36:23held it over GNX here because the Big East was always looked
- 1:36:26upon as a very good conference but it wasn't named CeCe with
- 1:36:29their tradition, their passage tree.
- 1:36:31So they had to leg up. So Virginia Tech had to work
- 1:36:33twice as hard to become relevant and be respected.
