- 0:00Good morning. It's Friday, September 4th, 2026.
- 0:03I'm Harper, and this is Ground Signal, your sharp
- 0:06daily briefing on the stories that actually matter.
- 0:09We've got a weekend on the edge, an air war that
- 0:12won't stop, a chip war that just got hotter,
- 0:14racing in Italy, and tennis in New York. Let's
- 0:17get into it. The U .S. Iran conflict shows no
- 0:21sign of cooling. Overnight, Washington continued
- 0:24its campaign of strikes and economic pressure
- 0:26while Tehran pushed back, and the Strait of Hormuz
- 0:29the choke point through which roughly a fifth
- 0:31of the world's oil flows, remains a live flashpoint.
- 0:35New this morning, U .S. military officials have
- 0:38confirmed they are reviewing a strike that reportedly
- 0:40hit a wedding inside Iran, killing civilians.
- 0:43That investigation is now a focal point for international
- 0:46pressure, with Gulf states watching closely and
- 0:49the U .N. calling for restraint. Kuwait and the
- 0:52UAE are managing real spillover, airspace disruptions,
- 0:55shipping slowdowns, and heightened threat environments
- 0:58that are already affecting travel in the region.
- 1:00If you are transiting through the Gulf this weekend,
- 1:03check your carrier's status before you move.
- 1:05Meanwhile, Russia extended its assault on Kiev
- 1:08for a sixth straight night. According to AP,
- 1:11the barrage lasted more than 12 hours and killed
- 1:13at least a dozen people. Residential buildings
- 1:16and energy infrastructure took direct hits. Ukrainian
- 1:19air defenses intercepted a large portion of the
- 1:21drones, but not all of them. This is an escalation
- 1:24in tempo, not just intensity, and it's happening
- 1:28during the European autumn when energy vulnerability
- 1:30rises. Watch this space into the weekend. And
- 1:34in South Asia, rescue operations are ongoing
- 1:37after Nepal and Tibet's devastating floods. Authorities
- 1:40report over 1 ,000 confirmed deaths and more
- 1:42than 4 ,000 people still missing. Rescue teams
- 1:45pulled survivors from a collapsed tunnel yesterday,
- 1:47but the window for finding more is narrowing.
- 1:50The humanitarian scale here is quietly staggering.
- 1:54Equities opened cautiously this morning as the
- 1:56conflict premium stayed embedded in oil prices.
- 1:58The macro picture hasn't changed. The Fed's next
- 2:01move is the FOMC meeting September 15th and 16th,
- 2:05and markets are holding their breath. No dramatic
- 2:07swings yet, but no risk on enthusiasm either.
- 2:10In crypto, Bitcoin is sitting at $79 ,440, down
- 2:15about 1 .7 % from yesterday's close. Ethereum
- 2:19is at $2 ,452, off around 2%. Solana is at $101,
- 2:26down 2 .7 % on the day. The overall tone is consolidation.
- 2:31The range has held between $76 ,000 and $80 ,000
- 2:34for Bitcoin over the past week. And nothing in
- 2:37the macro environment right now is giving traders
- 2:39a reason to break out. Eyes on the Fed in 11
- 2:42days. For the movers. State Department worldwide
- 2:45caution remains active, and the Middle East advisory
- 2:48has been elevated with specific call -outs for
- 2:50Kuwait, the UAE, Jordan, and Bahrain. If you're
- 2:54transiting or traveling anywhere in that corridor,
- 2:56reroute or have a plan B. Currency snapshot for
- 3:00September 4th. The U .S. dollar is buying approximately
- 3:0317 ,689 Indonesian rupiah. The Malaysian ringgit
- 3:08is at around 4 .04 to the dollar. The Thai baht
- 3:11sits near 133 baht per dollar based on cross
- 3:15-rate data, which tracks with the 33 .1 handle
- 3:18we've seen this week. For Peru and Colombia,
- 3:20rates have been holding near 3 .36 sol to the
- 3:23dollar and 3 ,200 Colombian pesos respectively,
- 3:27consistent with the range from earlier this week.
- 3:30Thailand's digital nomad visa remains active
- 3:32following the September 1 update, five -year
- 3:35term, multi -entry, approximately $1 ,500. Malaysia's
- 3:40DE Rantau program is open. Philippines' digital
- 3:43nomad visa is live. If you're planning a Southeast
- 3:46Asia move or extension before the end of the
- 3:48year, now is a reasonable window to act. Regional
- 3:51currency stability is working in your favor.
- 3:54DV, 2026 diversity visa deadline, September 30th.
- 3:58That's 26 days out. If you have a pending selectee
- 4:02case and haven't submitted your DS -260 yet,
- 4:05do not wait. Formula One is in Monza for the
- 4:07Italian Grand Prix. Free practice one ran this
- 4:10morning, and it was a good story. Charles Leclerc
- 4:13led the session on home turf with Lewis Hamilton
- 4:15and George Russell right behind him. The Ferrari
- 4:19crowd at Monza is something else entirely, and
- 4:22Leclerc giving them a reason to believe on day
- 4:24one is going to make this qualifying session
- 4:26electric. Race is Sunday. Championship leader
- 4:30Andrea Kimi Antonelli sits at 242 points, with
- 4:34George Russell at 183. This is a title fight
- 4:38with real stakes, and Monza is a circuit where
- 4:41momentum swings. At the U .S. Open in Flushing,
- 4:44we're deep in round three. On the men's side,
- 4:47Carlos Alcaraz takes on Yaibing Wu today. Alcaraz
- 4:50came through a tough four -setter on Wednesday
- 4:52and looked sharp by the end of it. On the women's
- 4:55side, Jessica Pegula faces Leila Fernandez, two
- 4:58crowd favorites and a match that should go deep.
- 5:01Fritz and Keyes also advanced, and Naomi Osaka
- 5:04is still alive in the draw. In Berlin, the FIBA
- 5:07Women's Basketball World Cup opened today with
- 5:09strong performances. Japan upset Mali 102 -97,
- 5:13and Australia handled Puerto Rico 70 -54. USA
- 5:18and China also tipped off, results pending as
- 5:20this episode was produced. Rock in Rio is underway,
- 5:23one of the world's biggest festivals, running
- 5:25through September 7th. If you're in Rio, the
- 5:28city is fully in festival mode. International
- 5:30headliners are stacked across multiple stages.
- 5:33World travel market heads to Riyadh September
- 5:358th through 10th. And don't sleep on the Copa
- 5:38Libertadores quarterfinal first leg September
- 5:409th. Flamengo, Palmeiras, Fluminense, and Estudiantes
- 5:44all in action. Two big chip stories today. NVIDIA
- 5:49is putting $3 .5 billion into media tech, adopting
- 5:53NVLink Fusion for custom AI accelerators. This
- 5:56is NVIDIA extending its reach deep into mobile
- 5:59and automotive silicon, well beyond the data
- 6:01center. OpenAI also revealed its in -house chip,
- 6:04codenamed Jalapeno, an ASIC for inference workloads
- 6:07that benchmarks claim beats NVIDIA's GB300 on
- 6:10efficiency. Anthropic previewed its model hardware
- 6:13standard, a framework letting AI agents control
- 6:16programmable machines. The model -to -chip integration
- 6:19race is fully in motion. That's Ground Signal
- 6:22for Friday, September 4th, 2026. Monza qualifying
- 6:25and race this weekend, US Open round four, NFL
- 6:28week one, September 9th, and a geopolitical situation
- 6:31that isn't taking the weekend off. Stay plugged
- 6:34in. We'll be back Monday with everything that
- 6:36shifted. Take care of yourselves out there.
