Latest / The Next Round / The Next Round: Josh Pate: Is Florida an SEC Power? Texas Questions & Trouble at USC | Hour 2
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, back with you now as we roll into hour
- 0:02Speaker 1: number two. Josh Pate was there, Texas and Tennessee. He
- 0:07Speaker 1: was there when they said, man, 50% off alcohol sales
- 0:12Speaker 1: if you go into the stadium at 9 a.m. just
- 0:14Speaker 1: to get everybody inside the stadium because the president was coming.
- 0:17Speaker 1: In other words, the president's here, right? Basically, I'm bad
- 0:20Speaker 1: at math. That's not buy one, get one free, but
- 0:21Speaker 1: it's pretty close, right?
- 0:23Speaker 2: It's a really, really good deal that it's not buy one,
- 0:26Speaker 2: get one free. But they only did it for an hour. Like,
- 0:29Speaker 2: extend it.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Well, to get you in. I know, but extend it
- 0:31Speaker 1: a little bit longer. And it's also 9 a.m., so
- 0:33Speaker 1: that's a problem. The video shot of Air Force One,
- 0:38Speaker 1: the one that everyone is using, was off of Josh
- 0:41Speaker 1: Pate's phone.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 0:42Speaker 1: How about that? The Air Force One over Neyland Stadium.
- 0:44Speaker 1: It was a better shot than ABC actually got of
- 0:48Speaker 1: Air Force One flying. Josh Pate College Football Show. Did
- 0:51Speaker 1: you watermark it, Josh? Has it got a watermark on
- 0:53Speaker 1: there so everybody sees the Pate State train?
- 0:56Speaker 3: You're smart enough to know watermarking means nothing. Someone will
- 0:59Speaker 3: just crop it and put their own watermark on it.
- 1:01Speaker 3: I'm sure you guys haven't had personal experience with that.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Can I tell you a story?
- 1:07Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:08Speaker 1: We love stories. All day.
- 1:10Speaker 3: This is between us. Let's not let this get out public.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Okay. Nobody watches this show.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Yeah. Air Force One comes in. Game starts. Secret Service
- 1:18Speaker 3: comes down there. Second quarter. Will you come up there
- 1:20Speaker 3: to talk to the president for a second? I don't
- 1:23Speaker 3: feel like I have much option. So, yeah, I'll come
- 1:24Speaker 3: up there with you. I go up to the reinforced
- 1:27Speaker 3: box that all the important people are in. I said
- 1:31Speaker 3: hey to the president. Glenn Jacobs is in the box.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Kane.
- 1:35Speaker 3: I've never met Glenn Jacobs in person, but I grew
- 1:37Speaker 3: up a huge pro wrestling fan. So I very disrespectfully,
- 1:44Speaker 3: in retrospect, sort of have my back to the president
- 1:46Speaker 3: because Cain has my attention in this box. And I
- 1:50Speaker 3: proceed to talk to Glenn Jacobs for like 20 minutes
- 1:53Speaker 3: about everything late 90s WWF. And all these people, including
- 1:57Speaker 3: Secret Service, are in this confined area in disbelief. that
- 2:02Speaker 3: someone is not like totally enamored with the fact that
- 2:05Speaker 3: they're in the room with the president. I was enamored
- 2:07Speaker 3: that I'm in the room with Kane because that has
- 2:10Speaker 3: more impact on a kid that grew up in the
- 2:12Speaker 3: late 90s than anything else. So everyone else will tell
- 2:15Speaker 3: that story differently. My story is. I got to meet
- 2:18Speaker 3: Glenn Jacobs Saturday. And I got a mild sunburn in
- 2:22Speaker 3: late September. I couldn't be happier.
- 2:23Speaker 1: It would have been fantastic if Kane was only distracting
- 2:27Speaker 1: you and then he had tagged the president in who
- 2:29Speaker 1: threw an elbow into the back of your head. If
- 2:31Speaker 1: Donald Trump had elbowed you in the back of the head,
- 2:33Speaker 1: that would have been a classic 1990s wrestling move.
- 2:36Speaker 3: If you think about it, Dunaway, there are multiple WWE
- 2:40Speaker 3: Hall of Famers in that suite.
- 2:42Speaker 1: They're both in the Hall of Fame. That is true.
- 2:44Speaker 1: It's true.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Crazy.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Pate, through four games, what is more surprising out of
- 2:50Speaker 2: the SEC for you? Is it the fact that Florida
- 2:55Speaker 2: is 4-0 in the way they've looked, or Oklahoma at 2-2,
- 2:59Speaker 2: and how bad this offense is once again in 2026?
- 3:04Speaker 3: Maybe I'm stupid, but Oklahoma is still the bigger surprise
- 3:07Speaker 3: to me. I say stupid because I really was convinced
- 3:10Speaker 3: it would be better this year. You remember two years ago,
- 3:13Speaker 3: I guess it was, when Georgia struggled to run the ball.
- 3:15Speaker 3: They were still good, but they struggled to run the ball.
- 3:17Speaker 3: And then Kirby and his entire staff spent all spring
- 3:20Speaker 3: and all summer trying to get that fixed. And they
- 3:23Speaker 3: fixed it. They were in the 30s in rushing success
- 3:26Speaker 3: last year. So we've seen Georgia be there, and they
- 3:29Speaker 3: pulled the nose up, and it worked. Oklahoma sounded like
- 3:33Speaker 3: they were committed to doing the same thing. It was
- 3:36Speaker 3: the only thing that people emphasized around there the entire winter, spring, summer.
- 3:40Speaker 3: And now they still can't run the ball. And John Mateer,
- 3:43Speaker 3: if anything, looks worse. than he's ever looked at any
- 3:45Speaker 3: point pre or post-injury last year. Everyone's throwing blame all
- 3:49Speaker 3: which way. And then in the middle of all that,
- 3:52Speaker 3: you've got the contract extension that they gave him, sort
- 3:55Speaker 3: of just voluntarily. I don't know that there was a
- 3:58Speaker 3: big market for Brent to leave Oklahoma. And I watched
- 4:03Speaker 3: that happen. And anytime someone gives a big contract extension,
- 4:07Speaker 3: especially when there's not a big market for it, I'm
- 4:09Speaker 3: still dumb enough to sit here and assume they must
- 4:11Speaker 3: know something I don't know. No. No, they're probably just
- 4:16Speaker 3: as shocked as everyone else. And I mean, look, I
- 4:19Speaker 3: said to someone else this morning, if you feel sorry
- 4:21Speaker 3: for Oklahoma and they were like, yeah, I do. I said,
- 4:24Speaker 3: don't look at the rest of their schedule. Don't look
- 4:26Speaker 3: at what they still got coming up because I don't
- 4:28Speaker 3: know if it's a bowl team. I don't know if
- 4:30Speaker 3: it's a six win team. And this was a team
- 4:33Speaker 3: that you guys heard it as well as I did.
- 4:35Speaker 3: A lot of folks had them in their playoff bracket.
- 4:37Speaker 3: A lot of folks were thinking, man, they take the
- 4:39Speaker 3: next step. They may be a dark horse national title
- 4:42Speaker 3: team this year. And I can't call that stupid because
- 4:46Speaker 3: I kind.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Of felt the same way. I was like, yeah, that tracks.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Going to be really good defensively. Surely they'll get the
- 4:51Speaker 3: run game fixed. I like Mateer kind of with an
- 4:54Speaker 3: entire year in this situation. I say system, but he's
- 4:57Speaker 3: still playing for the same coordinator he came there with.
- 4:59Speaker 2: They suck.
- 5:00Speaker 3: They're terrible. I got nothing else to say about it.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I know you make fun of people on your show
- 5:05Speaker 1: like me who just overreact to things instantly. How close
- 5:09Speaker 1: is Florida in your mind to being the best team
- 5:11Speaker 1: in the SEC right now? I've overreacted, yeah.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Yeah, they're pretty close. If you were to wipe the
- 5:17Speaker 3: slate clean and just pay attention to what you've seen
- 5:19Speaker 3: this year so far, or to put it another way,
- 5:21Speaker 3: if Texas had the exact on-field results that Florida did
- 5:24Speaker 3: so far this year, they would be a slam-dunk number
- 5:26Speaker 3: one team in the SEC, number one team in college football.
- 5:29Speaker 3: So seemingly the only thing that would be holding someone
- 5:33Speaker 3: back is still clinging to some preconceived notions. And still
- 5:37Speaker 3: clinging to the doubt, rightfully so, that's been baked into
- 5:40Speaker 3: the psyche from watching Florida the past few years. Also,
- 5:43Speaker 3: maybe you still doubt John Summerall because he hasn't proven enough.
- 5:47Speaker 3: If you want to feel that way, that's fine. I
- 5:49Speaker 3: feel the same way about Alabama. I feel the same
- 5:52Speaker 3: way about Oklahoma State randomly. We're going into week five, man.
- 5:58Speaker 3: We're past the quarter poll of the season. You've got
- 5:59Speaker 3: to stop paying attention to what you felt in media
- 6:01Speaker 3: day season and look at what your eyes have seen
- 6:04Speaker 3: in the regular season. And here's the other part about that.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Why am I to believe that we've seen the best
- 6:10Speaker 3: of Florida? Maybe that's a new quarterback down there. This
- 6:15Speaker 3: is a new staff down there. There's still a bunch
- 6:17Speaker 3: of new down there. So they've actually got room to
- 6:20Speaker 3: where by the time they play Georgia, Dunaway, for all
- 6:23Speaker 3: we know, that's the game of the year in the SEC,
- 6:26Speaker 3: for all we know. Because I guarantee you people didn't
- 6:29Speaker 3: circle Keelan Russell and Kamario Taylor and say, boy, that
- 6:32Speaker 3: week five matchup, that may be the quarterback matchup of
- 6:35Speaker 3: the year. But you know what? It may be the
- 6:36Speaker 3: quarterback matchup of the year. So yeah, I think Florida's.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Way up there.
- 6:40Speaker 3: I think it's insane. That they're, what, number eight or
- 6:43Speaker 3: something like that in the AP poll?
- 6:45Speaker 1: It's just dumb.
- 6:46Speaker 3: I've said that word a lot so far. Fortunately, I'm
- 6:48Speaker 3: not talking about myself or you or anyone associated with
- 6:51Speaker 3: this show in this context. Like, I was reading a
- 6:55Speaker 3: guy's explanation for his AP ballot today. And he said
- 7:00Speaker 3: something like, well, I had Florida in the 20s, and
- 7:03Speaker 3: I didn't want to bump them up too many spots.
- 7:05Speaker 3: That's nonsense talk. It's not real.
- 7:09Speaker 2: None of this is real.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Rankings aren't real. You should feel free bumping someone up
- 7:12Speaker 3: 50 spots. If the results supersede what you thought, then
- 7:17Speaker 3: what you thought is irrelevant. Florida's one of the best
- 7:20Speaker 3: teams in the country so far.
- 7:22Speaker 1: And with that said, you watch with your own eyeballs.
- 7:24Speaker 1: The team, the Associated Press, says it's number one. And
- 7:28Speaker 1: you would have a hard argument saying it's the best
- 7:30Speaker 1: team in the SEC. Sure.
- 7:33Speaker 3: I think there's a big difference in how you would
- 7:35Speaker 3: rank a team based on merit and justification versus who
- 7:40Speaker 3: you really think. I think Ohio State's still better than Texas,
- 7:42Speaker 3: but I wouldn't rank Ohio State above Texas because they
- 7:44Speaker 3: played and Texas won. The thing I would be very
- 7:48Speaker 3: proud of if I'm Steve Sarkeesian or if I'm a
- 7:50Speaker 3: Texas fan, the thing I would take great pride in
- 7:53Speaker 3: is They didn't run the ball incredibly well the other day.
- 7:56Speaker 3: There were long stretches where Arch looked ordinary to below average,
- 8:00Speaker 3: but they have several facets of that team that can
- 8:03Speaker 3: win games for them. And one of them that probably
- 8:06Speaker 3: got overlooked in the preseason just because of the attention
- 8:08Speaker 3: that Arch commands is their defense. They can win games defensively.
- 8:12Speaker 3: I'd go a step further. That's a defensive-oriented team. And
- 8:15Speaker 3: that's probably what they're going to have to be, which
- 8:18Speaker 3: flies in the face of of the reason most people
- 8:21Speaker 3: believed in them, the ones that did, because they believe
- 8:24Speaker 3: in them because they think offense is going to do this,
- 8:26Speaker 3: and they did that in the portal at running back,
- 8:28Speaker 3: and Cam Coleman this, and Ryan Wingo that. That's great.
- 8:32Speaker 3: But they're not plus at quarterback. Arch Manning's a plus name,
- 8:36Speaker 3: but that performance level's not plus at quarterback. But Colin
- 8:39Speaker 3: Simmons is. Those defensive pieces are. So if they got
- 8:43Speaker 3: to win a game 16-9, then they'll go win a
- 8:46Speaker 3: game 16-9. The only question with them, I fully believe
- 8:49Speaker 3: they deserve to be ranked number one. The question with
- 8:51Speaker 3: them is going to come when they got to face
- 8:53Speaker 3: Keelan Russell, they got to face Trinidad Chambliss, Darian Mensah,
- 8:56Speaker 3: whatever the future has in store for them. There are
- 9:00Speaker 3: some guys who play this sport that no defense can
- 9:02Speaker 3: completely bottle up. No defense can completely shut down. The
- 9:05Speaker 3: rules don't allow it. The talent those guys possess don't
- 9:08Speaker 3: allow you to completely shut them down. So eventually, Texas
- 9:11Speaker 3: is going to have to trade points with someone. Eventually,
- 9:14Speaker 3: Texas is going to need 35 to win a game.
- 9:17Speaker 3: I don't know if they can do it. Then again,
- 9:19Speaker 3: I don't know if the week four version of Texas
- 9:23Speaker 3: is the final version of Texas. If that logic tracked,
- 9:26Speaker 3: Miami wouldn't have sniffed a national title game last year.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Because at this point last year, they hadn't even lost
- 9:31Speaker 3: to Louisville or SMU yet. So we've seen teams turn
- 9:34Speaker 3: corners before and find their gear. And I still leave
- 9:37Speaker 3: that in the cards for Texas to be able to do.
- 9:39Speaker 3: But in the meantime, they're going to have to sort
- 9:42Speaker 3: of patchwork wins together.
- 9:44Speaker 2: You mentioned the quarterback matchup this weekend in Starkville, and
- 9:47Speaker 2: Lebby's done a hell of a job through four games.
- 9:49Speaker 2: And quietly, that resume's not bad when you look at
- 9:53Speaker 2: the domination at Minnesota, the comeback against South Carolina on
- 9:56Speaker 2: the road, and then knocking off Missouri this past week.
- 10:00Speaker 2: How far can Kamario Taylor take this team, though? They've
- 10:02Speaker 2: got four more top tens still left on the schedule.
- 10:07Speaker 3: I think they can bite any one of those teams
- 10:10Speaker 3: because of what the quarterback position means in this sport.
- 10:13Speaker 3: So they're going to be underdogs in most to all
- 10:17Speaker 3: of those games. Because the way point spreads are derived
- 10:21Speaker 3: to begin with, like there's point assignation for every position
- 10:24Speaker 3: group and every person on the field. And the grand
- 10:27Speaker 3: sum of that is going to be most of these
- 10:30Speaker 3: teams have more raw talent than Mississippi State. The great
- 10:33Speaker 3: equalizer in the sport of football is the quarterback position.
- 10:38Speaker 3: And that guy has long since shown us that if
- 10:41Speaker 3: he's on, not just any given day, Lance, like any
- 10:44Speaker 3: given portion of one day, he can take over a game.
- 10:47Speaker 3: I mean, they were dead in the water in the
- 10:49Speaker 3: first quarter against South Carolina and still pulled away and
- 10:52Speaker 3: won the game. So, like, this weekend is a huge
- 10:56Speaker 3: barometer to me on so many fronts. It's a barometer
- 10:59Speaker 3: for Bama because they're probably just in the toughest spot
- 11:02Speaker 3: that their schedule has dealt them so far this year. Camario, Taylor,
- 11:06Speaker 3: and Mississippi State are another step out into waters they
- 11:10Speaker 3: have not swam in. So, I mean, really, history shows
- 11:14Speaker 3: that two weeks ago, they should have come back to
- 11:17Speaker 3: earth because they go get that big win at Minnesota.
- 11:19Speaker 3: It's your second week consecutively on the road. You go
- 11:22Speaker 3: to South Carolina. We don't know that South Carolina has
- 11:25Speaker 3: fallen off a cliff yet. And they get up big
- 11:27Speaker 3: on you and then you answer the bell. So then
- 11:29Speaker 3: you're doubly due down when you come home against a
- 11:32Speaker 3: really good quarterback in his own right in Austin Simmons.
- 11:35Speaker 3: And you get off the deck, you answer the bell again,
- 11:37Speaker 3: which by the way, that was probably the game of
- 11:40Speaker 3: the day Saturday in Starkville on SEC Network. And Side note,
- 11:45Speaker 3: that production crew did a great job. I don't know
- 11:47Speaker 3: if you guys were watching that game. When it ended,
- 11:50Speaker 3: they tossed back to the studio in Charlotte, I guess
- 11:53Speaker 3: is where they were, but they kept the live feed
- 11:56Speaker 3: of the stadium going. So it's the studio talking. Instead
- 12:00Speaker 3: of an audio bed or 47 commercials, they're just letting
- 12:03Speaker 3: the scene bake. They're in Starkville, and rarely do you
- 12:07Speaker 3: see that. I don't get to see a lot of
- 12:08Speaker 3: these games live, so maybe that's the norm for them,
- 12:11Speaker 3: but I thought they did a great job producing that. Anyway,
- 12:14Speaker 3: So all that leads to somehow an 11 a.m. kickoff,
- 12:18Speaker 3: but nevertheless, a huge game against Alabama. And you're going
- 12:23Speaker 3: to have a standard boilerplate talking point from here on
- 12:26Speaker 3: out about Mississippi State that, oh man, they've never been
- 12:29Speaker 3: in this position before. From here, the rest of the way,
- 12:32Speaker 3: they're just going to be in a bunch of positions
- 12:34Speaker 3: they've never been in before. But I want to remind everyone,
- 12:37Speaker 3: including myself, most of the teams they play are going
- 12:41Speaker 3: to be in a position they've never been in before
- 12:42Speaker 3: because very few defensive coordinators have faced a talent like this,
- 12:46Speaker 3: a quarterback. So it's going to be a lot of
- 12:47Speaker 3: fun to watch.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Yeah, McGee, Evan, and Johnson, the receivers against that Bama secondary,
- 12:52Speaker 1: that'll be fascinating to watch as well. Can't wait to
- 12:56Speaker 1: see that one coming up this weekend. Listen, schedules are schedules.
- 12:59Speaker 2: I know that.
- 13:00Speaker 1: And there's a competitive advantage to playing the schedule that
- 13:04Speaker 1: Notre Dame and Miami has. I would be mad, Pate,
- 13:07Speaker 1: if I was a Notre Dame or Miami fan. This
- 13:09Speaker 1: could be two of our best teams in a long,
- 13:12Speaker 1: long time. And we don't get to see them in
- 13:14Speaker 1: quality games enough. Could you talk a little bit about
- 13:17Speaker 1: just scheduling? And from the fan perspective, you're the future commissioner.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Notre Dame and Miami, their fans deserve better games.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Yeah, it's multi-layered. All right, so firstly, if I were commissioner,
- 13:29Speaker 3: I wouldn't have more than 10 teams in a conference.
- 13:32Speaker 3: Because once you let a couple of conferences grab up
- 13:35Speaker 3: most of the value properties in the sport, you end
- 13:37Speaker 3: up with conference schedules that look like this. Now, Notre
- 13:39Speaker 3: Dame's obviously a different case because they're an independent. Dunaway,
- 13:44Speaker 3: I believe scheduling should not be in the hands of
- 13:47Speaker 3: the school. And I believe for a while now, once
- 13:50Speaker 3: media rights deals got into the nine-figure range and long-term,
- 13:53Speaker 3: they're in the 10-figure range. You can't leave scheduling at
- 13:56Speaker 3: the hands of Miami or Indiana or Auburn or Indiana
- 14:00Speaker 3: or anyone else. It's too valuable a property. Everyone's talking
- 14:03Speaker 3: about expanding the playoffs so we can make more money. Man,
- 14:06Speaker 3: how about take control of your scheduling apparatus in exchange
- 14:10Speaker 3: for the media rights dollars that you're going to take
- 14:13Speaker 3: to the bank as a member institution? Being affiliated with
- 14:17Speaker 3: these conferences, you ought to have your schedule dictated to you.
- 14:20Speaker 3: And yeah, it does suck, man. Remember when Georgia was
- 14:22Speaker 3: in the SEC East? Even in the SEC, we dealt
- 14:25Speaker 3: with this some years where Georgia would have a home
- 14:27Speaker 3: schedule and Vandy wasn't good. Kentucky wasn't good. South Carolina
- 14:31Speaker 3: wasn't good. Florida wasn't good. And it's like, maybe Tennessee
- 14:35Speaker 3: will be good. Who do we play from the West
- 14:37Speaker 3: this year? Are we going to play anyone out of conference? Well,
- 14:40Speaker 3: this is that times 10. Like Miami has a bunch
- 14:43Speaker 3: of injuries right now. No one even knows it because
- 14:45Speaker 3: no one's watching their games because they're not even on
- 14:49Speaker 3: the periphery. They're not on the national radar. I'd feel
- 14:51Speaker 3: the same way. So I agree with you. Like, yeah,
- 14:54Speaker 3: it's great if you could tell me we're a virtual
- 14:57Speaker 3: lot for the playoff. I'm a regular season guy. So
- 15:00Speaker 3: I want my regular season to have juice. And if
- 15:02Speaker 3: I'm a season ticket holder, I didn't buy season tickets
- 15:06Speaker 3: to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. I bought them to
- 15:10Speaker 3: Hard Rock Stadium or Notre Dame Stadium. And, man, I'd
- 15:13Speaker 3: love to look all due respect to the work Marcus
- 15:16Speaker 3: Freeman and Mario are doing. I'd love to walk in
- 15:18Speaker 3: that building and have a little bit of a threat
- 15:20Speaker 3: that we're going to be pushed on one of these
- 15:22Speaker 3: Saturdays here and there. And that is not the case
- 15:24Speaker 3: right now.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Josh Pate is with us. The Josh Pate College Football Show,
- 15:27Speaker 1: the Don't Tread on Saturday Tour, will literally not be
- 15:30Speaker 1: treading on Saturday this week. It will be a Friday
- 15:32Speaker 1: night game, Pitt and Virginia Tech, entertaining Friday night game.
- 15:35Speaker 1: That's where Pate will be. watch his show on YouTube,
- 15:38Speaker 1: the Josh Pate College Football Show, see all of his
- 15:40Speaker 1: work throughout the week. He's never been busier than he
- 15:42Speaker 1: is right now. He's on my screens all the time. Oh,
- 15:46Speaker 1: I see him everywhere. I mean, I go eat at
- 15:48Speaker 1: a barbecue place in Tuscaloosa and I look up middle
- 15:51Speaker 1: of the day. There's Josh Pate. There's Josh Pate. I
- 15:52Speaker 1: like it most when he's on this screen right here.
- 15:54Speaker 1: That's our screen. We've already had one person on this
- 15:59Speaker 1: platform here today get off the Lincoln-Riley train and leave
- 16:03Speaker 1: him at the train station. You did it last night
- 16:05Speaker 1: as well.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Yeah. I saw Lance at the station. I mean, that's where,
- 16:10Speaker 3: that's where the headway.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Lance is all this bad.
- 16:13Speaker 3: It was a bad weekend for those of us. And
- 16:16Speaker 3: there aren't many who kind of stuck with Lincoln and
- 16:20Speaker 3: believed that if we just give him enough time, eventually
- 16:22Speaker 3: it'll happen. And we gave him more time and the
- 16:25Speaker 3: same stuff kept on happening. So you guys remember last year,
- 16:28Speaker 3: Penn state coming into the year, they, they do that
- 16:30Speaker 3: big buildup and it's title or bust. And This is
- 16:33Speaker 3: the year that James Franklin's going to get over the hump.
- 16:35Speaker 3: And he didn't even resist that hype. He fed into
- 16:38Speaker 3: that hype because they really believed they had the team
- 16:41Speaker 3: to get it done. Ironically, Oregon, of all programs, comes
- 16:45Speaker 3: in there early in the year. Oregon gets up big
- 16:47Speaker 3: on them. Penn State does storm back, but Oregon wins
- 16:50Speaker 3: the game. And I remember at the time, I don't
- 16:53Speaker 3: nail much, but I nailed this one. I remember the
- 16:55Speaker 3: night after we had our Sunday night show, and I
- 16:58Speaker 3: know the Penn State folks really well. And I went
- 17:00Speaker 3: on the show and said, I know they just lost
- 17:03Speaker 3: one conference game yesterday. But yesterday was way, way, way
- 17:06Speaker 3: bigger than one loss. Because I knew the collateral damage
- 17:10Speaker 3: that it had or was going to have on the
- 17:12Speaker 3: psyche of the program, the psyche of the fan base.
- 17:14Speaker 3: Sure enough, they go to UCLA and get popped. They
- 17:17Speaker 3: get beat against Northwestern. Season goes off the rails. You
- 17:21Speaker 3: just saw a mirror image of that Saturday in Los Angeles.
- 17:24Speaker 3: Those people sold out the Coliseum. So they showed up again.
- 17:28Speaker 3: They proved they were willing to still be bought in,
- 17:31Speaker 3: but with the condition that this better be the year.
- 17:34Speaker 3: With the condition that Oregon's coming into our building, this
- 17:37Speaker 3: is kind of the one you got to get it
- 17:38Speaker 3: done in. And not only do they not win, Dante
- 17:42Speaker 3: Moore gets knocked out of the game, and Dylan Raiola
- 17:44Speaker 3: still leads Oregon to a double-digit victory over you. So
- 17:48Speaker 3: in the aggregate, it's almost the same score as last
- 17:50Speaker 3: year in Eugene. Nothing's changed. You've still got the same issues. Defensively,
- 17:55Speaker 3: you're on, I don't know, you're like your ninth coordinator.
- 17:58Speaker 3: And just everything keeps changing except one constant, and it's
- 18:02Speaker 3: Lincoln Riley. So it's time to hit the dump button.
- 18:05Speaker 3: So I'm with Lance. We are locked arm in arm.
- 18:07Speaker 3: You know how rarely we do that, but we are
- 18:09Speaker 3: locked arm in arm, and we have joined the crowd.
- 18:12Speaker 3: We are joining the masses and looking at USC and wondering,
- 18:17Speaker 3: what's next? That buyout's massive. So I don't know what's next.
- 18:21Speaker 3: I just know what's next is not any of the
- 18:24Speaker 3: letters C, F, or P.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, they've got to do something. You look
- 18:30Speaker 2: at the culture, too, like the culture at USC and
- 18:34Speaker 2: now the culture in Gainesville under John Summerall in one year.
- 18:38Speaker 2: It is night and day. How appealing is the job?
- 18:42Speaker 2: I mean, I guess it's still really appealing. It's maybe
- 18:45Speaker 2: a top 10, top 15 job still.
- 18:48Speaker 3: One thousand percent. A slam dunk top 10 job to me.
- 18:52Speaker 3: Because everything that you would claim to need to win
- 18:54Speaker 3: is there. They just landed a number one recruiting class.
- 18:57Speaker 3: So you can't tell me they're not invested in getting talent.
- 19:00Speaker 3: They just peeled the sticker off a brand new facility.
- 19:03Speaker 3: So you can't tell me facilities-wise you're going to be
- 19:06Speaker 3: antiquated out there. You're top of the line. It's Los Angeles.
- 19:09Speaker 3: It's USC. It's history. It's now one of the premier
- 19:13Speaker 3: institutions in the Big Ten. It's just been irrelevant for
- 19:17Speaker 3: a long time because people that don't really belong in
- 19:19Speaker 3: positions of making decisions haven't been able to get out
- 19:22Speaker 3: of their way. But Jen Cohen's a really good AD.
- 19:25Speaker 3: There's a lot to be admired about the nuts and bolts,
- 19:29Speaker 3: like the guts of that place. Not perfect. I'm not
- 19:32Speaker 3: saying it's perfect. And they've got drama and they've got
- 19:35Speaker 3: infighting just like any place else. But you put the
- 19:38Speaker 3: right guy out there. And let me put it to
- 19:39Speaker 3: you like this. What if Bob Chesney was at USC?
- 19:45Speaker 3: What would this year's team look like? The dirty secret
- 19:48Speaker 3: right now, USC not the best team in Los Angeles.
- 19:51Speaker 1: I know, it's crazy.
- 19:52Speaker 3: UCLA is. Bob Chesney hasn't even taken stuff out of
- 19:55Speaker 3: the boxes in the house he moved into. And Lincoln's
- 19:58Speaker 3: been there half a decade, like Lance said it perfectly.
- 20:01Speaker 3: You cannot live in a world where you watch Chesney
- 20:04Speaker 3: do what he's doing, or Summerall doing what they're doing,
- 20:06Speaker 3: just boom, immediately. And sit there and say, I just
- 20:10Speaker 3: need a couple of more years. You don't get that
- 20:12Speaker 3: at mid-level programs anymore. You especially don't get it at USC.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Not that Maryland is any good, right?
- 20:19Speaker 3: Not that they are.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Not that they are. But UCLA came cross-country west to east,
- 20:25Speaker 1: which is hard to do, played an early game and
- 20:26Speaker 1: dismantled them.
- 20:28Speaker 2: They're getting better. They can run the football. I didn't
- 20:30Speaker 2: think we would get Cignetti 2.0, but what Chesney did
- 20:35Speaker 2: at JMU. Like, hey, right now I would take 100%
- 20:38Speaker 2: Chesney at USC. Now, what would be interesting, would USC
- 20:43Speaker 2: ever hire the UCLA head coach, and would Chesney take
- 20:46Speaker 2: that job?
- 20:48Speaker 3: I don't know what Bob Chesney would do. I know
- 20:50Speaker 3: I would rewrite state law to be able to take
- 20:53Speaker 3: him across town to USC. If we could execute a trade,
- 20:57Speaker 3: so be it. You know his buyout's $ 8 million?
- 21:00Speaker 1: Chesney's is.
- 21:03Speaker 3: If the internet is to be believed, $ 8 million.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 21:08Speaker 3: I'm sure they're working on rewriting that before the end
- 21:10Speaker 3: of this. I didn't know that. I just think in
- 21:16Speaker 3: this great hiring cycle we just had, where you had,
- 21:19Speaker 3: I mean, Penn State was open, Florida, Auburn, LSU, all
- 21:22Speaker 3: these jobs. And you looked at UCLA able to pull
- 21:25Speaker 3: that off. And here's the great slap in the face.
- 21:28Speaker 3: Maryland flirted with the idea of moving on from Mike
- 21:31Speaker 3: Loxley last cycle. And Chesney would have been the slam
- 21:35Speaker 3: duck candidate. They 100% would have gotten him. He would
- 21:38Speaker 3: have been able to stay in the Northeast where he
- 21:40Speaker 3: really wanted to stay anyway. And they didn't pull the
- 21:43Speaker 3: trigger that they're going to end up pulling now. And
- 21:46Speaker 3: they're going to pull it now because the guy they
- 21:47Speaker 3: could have had came all the way halfway across the world.
- 21:51Speaker 3: And that spread was.
- 21:52Speaker 2: One and a half.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Oh, I know.
- 21:54Speaker 3: They won 54 to three.
- 21:55Speaker 2: Oh, I had Maryland.
- 21:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Yeah, not even close there at the Shell. Hey, listen,
- 22:02Speaker 1: I know your wife would never take a victory lap.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Does she have anything to do with the Don't Tread
- 22:06Speaker 1: on Saturday name and gear? I mean, that's one of
- 22:09Speaker 1: those logos and gear that, I mean, I know it's
- 22:12Speaker 1: named for this tour this year, but that should never
- 22:14Speaker 1: go away. That should be part of your store forever
- 22:17Speaker 1: and ever.
- 22:18Speaker 3: You're not going to believe this because she is responsible
- 22:20Speaker 3: for most of the successful things we do and the
- 22:23Speaker 3: good ideas we have. That is 100 percent born in
- 22:27Speaker 3: this brain right here. Wow.
- 22:28Speaker 4: Wow.
- 22:29Speaker 3: Wow.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Wow.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Rural Georgia.
- 22:30Speaker 3: Like I said, like I said, you won't believe it.
- 22:33Speaker 3: I don't believe it. But it just I don't know
- 22:36Speaker 3: if you guys have ever had a light bulb moment.
- 22:38Speaker 3: I think I've had two or three my whole life.
- 22:40Speaker 3: That was one of them done away. You're right. I'm
- 22:41Speaker 3: never getting rid of that shirt. I'm never getting rid
- 22:43Speaker 3: of that thing.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:44Speaker 1: And the flags. Every time I try to order a flag,
- 22:46Speaker 1: it's always out.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Just send me your address.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll take care of that.
- 22:50Speaker 3: You don't need to be spending money anywhere around me.
- 22:53Speaker 3: We'll take care of that.
- 22:53Speaker 1: You talked about it enough. Yeah, that's right. That's what
- 22:57Speaker 1: I was fishing for.
- 22:58Speaker 3: I knew this got scheduled for a reason. Mission accomplished.
- 23:01Speaker 3: That's right.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Why don't we get Josh Pate on? It's been a minute.
- 23:03Speaker 3: All right.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Josh Pate's College Football Show on YouTube.
- 23:06Speaker 2: Go subscribe.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Set your alerts so you know when he drops content.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Add Josh Pate CFB on the socials. Pate, it is
- 23:11Speaker 1: always fun, my man. Thank you.
- 23:13Speaker 3: Appreciate it, guys.
- 23:13Speaker 1: All right, buddy. Take care. Josh Pate with us on
- 23:15Speaker 1: the next round. Life's so good, he's giving out free
- 23:17Speaker 1: gear now. That's good. We've given enough free gear that
- 23:20Speaker 1: you ought to get something. To who? I mean, many people.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Who's the last person we had on the show Friday?
- 23:26Speaker 2: Furman. That's right.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Furman got some free stuff.
- 23:29Speaker 2: He showed it to the audience.
- 23:31Speaker 1: We'll have a guest tomorrow on the show, Jeff Collins.
- 23:33Speaker 1: I saw some of Jeff's content this weekend. This guy's...
- 23:37Speaker 1: The guy's falling into being a media star. He breaks
- 23:39Speaker 1: down some tape really good. So Jeff's on the show tomorrow.
- 23:42Speaker 1: He's here to coach you.
- 23:43Speaker 3: It is.
- 23:44Speaker 1: It's 10 Central, 11 Eastern tomorrow. You know how that
- 23:47Speaker 1: film's going to act every time. That's right. Every time.
- 23:50Speaker 2: If Georgia Tech fans were upset with him, worst.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Team in the ACC. Oh, my gosh. The end of
- 23:55Speaker 1: that game. That just adds to the Buster Faulkner lore, right? Yeah.
- 23:59Speaker 1: They're a disaster.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Disaster.
- 24:01Speaker 1: The end of that game. What is Mendoza doing? He's
- 24:04Speaker 1: running backwards. You've got... You've got third and goal from
- 24:07Speaker 1: forever to begin with, and he's just running backwards. And
- 24:10Speaker 1: by the way, if they were, like I'm sure on
- 24:12Speaker 1: Georgia Tech message boards, they're like, let's get rid of
- 24:16Speaker 1: Brent and bring Buster back. Buster won't take the Georgia Tech. No, no, no, no.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Just this hiring cycle will have better jobs.
- 24:23Speaker 2: It's going to be interesting because you remember Joe Brady
- 24:25Speaker 2: after the incredible 2019. That's what everybody's comparing. I mentioned
- 24:29Speaker 2: it a couple of weeks ago on the show that
- 24:31Speaker 2: this is what the ascension sounds like.
- 24:33Speaker 1: I thought you did. I did, yeah. Yeah, that's what
- 24:35Speaker 1: I said. You mentioned it because I've had a lot
- 24:37Speaker 1: of people saying Lance is right. This is 2019 Joe Brady.
- 24:39Speaker 2: But the crazy thing out of that, where did Joe
- 24:42Speaker 2: Brady go?
- 24:43Speaker 1: In desolation. He's now the head coach of the Bills.
- 24:47Speaker 2: But I'm saying he didn't cash in immediately. We were like,
- 24:49Speaker 2: he needs to cash in.
- 24:50Speaker 1: He was Matt Rule's offensive coordinator.
- 24:51Speaker 2: Yeah, but I'm saying he didn't cash in on a
- 24:54Speaker 2: head coaching job.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Yeah, he went to the NFL. He went, I think,
- 24:57Speaker 1: to Matt Rule. That's right, with the Panthers.
- 24:59Speaker 2: Yep and was quickly fired.
- 25:01Speaker 1: And had to work his way back to where now
- 25:03Speaker 1: he's the head coach in buffalo it's.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Worked out my point is buster will get a job well.
- 25:07Speaker 1: The problem for our boy summerall is he's been too
- 25:09Speaker 1: good too quick i mean you probably are only going
- 25:12Speaker 1: to get one year buster faulkner as the offensive court
- 25:14Speaker 1: i literally thought about this this weekend as i was
- 25:16Speaker 1: watching florida look so good i was like i would
- 25:19Speaker 1: have my next offensive coordinator on staff already and We
- 25:25Speaker 1: have Xeroxed every piece of paper that is in Buster's office. Buster,
- 25:29Speaker 1: we're going to need you to hand that notebook over.
- 25:30Speaker 1: And your job, you're not even working right now. Your
- 25:33Speaker 1: job is to shadow him, and you become Buster Faulkner.
- 25:36Speaker 1: That's right. Buster Jr. Yeah, it's almost like we're Cold
- 25:39Speaker 1: War Russia. And I'm trying to duplicate Buster. And I've
- 25:45Speaker 1: got a human that is following him around. You eat
- 25:47Speaker 1: what he eats. You drink what he drinks. You exercise
- 25:50Speaker 1: like he exercises. And then I want you to be
- 25:52Speaker 1: him when he leaves. Leave his wife alone. But other
- 25:54Speaker 1: than that. We're going to find you a girl that
- 25:56Speaker 1: looks just like her. I think it's a fair plan.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Buster's probably a nickname anyway. We'll just start calling you Buster.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Nobody will ever know. You're Buster too. That's right.
- 26:04Speaker 3: All right.
- 26:04Speaker 1: When we come back on Sporting State, we will. Hey,
- 26:08Speaker 1: The Athletic does this cool thing. I don't know if
- 26:10Speaker 1: you guys ever see it. They actually look at a
- 26:12Speaker 1: couple of message boards every week, and it's Message Board Monday.
- 26:18Speaker 1: So I've got a couple of– I'll ask you guys
- 26:21Speaker 1: when we come back who's getting blown up on their
- 26:24Speaker 1: message boards today.
- 26:25Speaker 2: Okay.
- 26:25Speaker 3: All right?
- 26:26Speaker 1: We've touched on a couple of them. We haven't touched
- 26:28Speaker 1: on the first one they go to who's getting just roasted.
- 26:31Speaker 1: The show today being brought to you by our friends
- 26:34Speaker 1: at Hard Rock Bet. Listen, it's Florida's only legal sportsbook.
- 26:39Speaker 1: right there in the state of Florida. Trustworthy option there.
- 26:42Speaker 1: But Hard Rock Bet's not just available in Florida. It's
- 26:45Speaker 1: also available, I'll do it backwards this time, in the states,
- 26:47Speaker 1: Virginia and Tennessee, Ohio, New Jersey, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Colorado,
- 26:52Speaker 1: and Arizona. And with football back, you can check out
- 26:55Speaker 1: all the new features, the app updates, the promos, which
- 26:58Speaker 1: includes until October 4th, Bet five, get $ 100 in bonus bets.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Available right now when you go to hardrock.bet backslash clay.
- 27:06Speaker 1: Go check it out. See if you're available. Hardrock.bet backslash clay.
- 27:10Speaker 1: And they've got cool things on different days of the week.
- 27:12Speaker 1: On Monday, you choose Mondays. You choose a same game
- 27:16Speaker 1: parlay profit boost or a no sweat bet to use
- 27:19Speaker 1: on Monday's game. That's all happening right now. Hardrock.bet backslash clay.
- 27:25Speaker 1: The feud coming up. Some exhibition basketball. Virginia and Vandy,
- 27:30Speaker 1: both of them are going to be really good this year,
- 27:32Speaker 1: played exhibition basketball yesterday in Charleston outdoors. Look at this.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Outdoor exhibition basketball game at Credit One Stadium there. Brownie's
- 27:44Speaker 1: going to tell me what kind of stadium that is.
- 27:46Speaker 1: But it was a great look. And what was really
- 27:49Speaker 1: weird in the postgame handshake line, the Virginia staff and
- 27:54Speaker 1: coaches never noticed, but that's comedian Nate Bergazzi.
- 27:59Speaker 2: Who was on the bench and he's.
- 28:00Speaker 1: In the handshake line afterwards. Like a coach. Like he's
- 28:04Speaker 1: one of the coaches. Cool scene to start off the
- 28:07Speaker 1: exhibition season. He's all in on Vandy.
- 28:09Speaker 2: He is.
- 28:09Speaker 1: I'll give him credit. He's helping them. He did a
- 28:12Speaker 1: bit once in his routine about being a Vanderbilt fan.
- 28:17Speaker 1: and how hard that was and he's got a couple
- 28:19Speaker 1: funny stories but i think it's legit like i think
- 28:22Speaker 1: he's a legit vandy fan i don't think he just
- 28:24Speaker 1: jumped on the bandwagon.
- 28:24Speaker 2: He was very involved in the jared curtis yeah.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Yeah remember he looks pretty good man did he sponsor
- 28:29Speaker 1: him he sponsored curtis right yeah that put him in
- 28:32Speaker 1: such a boring game yeah it was credit one stadium
- 28:35Speaker 1: is uh it's a multi-purpose venue you saw it perhaps
- 28:38Speaker 1: in the background of the video there's a stage on
- 28:40Speaker 1: one end And it's basically an outdoor concert venue, but
- 28:45Speaker 1: they've also played tennis events in there.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Okay.
- 28:47Speaker 1: So it's kind of like a stadium meets an amphitheater.
- 28:50Speaker 1: It's open air, but they do concerts in there. You
- 28:54Speaker 1: see the stage in the background there on that piece
- 28:56Speaker 1: of video right there. Well, I mean, we play in
- 28:57Speaker 1: casino ballrooms in Vegas sometimes and down in Atlantis. So
- 29:02Speaker 1: why not do that? Exhibition basketball outdoor. They had good
- 29:05Speaker 1: weather for it.
- 29:05Speaker 2: Pretty cool.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Get your tickets to Ballin'. in Boutwell as well in
- 29:09Speaker 1: the feud and let's enjoy some basketball.
- 29:11Speaker 2: Air Force carrier too. That's true.
- 29:13Speaker 1: I remember that. That's right. That one didn't go well, right?
- 29:15Speaker 1: We had some rain or some moisture.
- 29:16Speaker 2: No, I thought it was okay. I think it was
- 29:17Speaker 2: Michigan State, North Carolina.
- 29:19Speaker 1: There was one where the floor got screwed up. Yeah,
- 29:24Speaker 1: there was moisture on the floor. I think that might
- 29:26Speaker 1: have been, I don't know.
- 29:27Speaker 2: So can I guess the coach that we haven't talked
- 29:30Speaker 2: about that's getting a lot of... After you tell us
- 29:32Speaker 2: about Clay Travis Law, absolutely. Hey, look, accidents do not

- 30:16Speaker 1: Okay, who's your guess?
- 30:18Speaker 2: Mike Elko in Texas A & M.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Yep, you nailed it. Joe Rexroad writes it at The Athletic.
- 30:23Speaker 1: He does it every week. And listen, I know Joe
- 30:26Speaker 1: probably has never listened to our show. but it was
- 30:28Speaker 1: one of our favorite old bits we used to do
- 30:30Speaker 1: in radio where we'd have, was it message board, message board, Joe,
- 30:34Speaker 1: and he would jump in and read message boards. Uh,
- 30:38Speaker 1: Rex road does this at the athletic every Monday. Uh,
- 30:42Speaker 1: and I'll just give you a couple of them. Uh, uh,
- 30:47Speaker 1: Jeff Tarpley writes at two, four, seven sports, by the way,
- 30:50Speaker 1: that Greg Oh nine ag says, ask, ask Elko why
- 30:54Speaker 1: he got lazy after his extension. Um, Chicken Nugget, who
- 30:59Speaker 1: should we go after when we inevitably fire Elko soon?
- 31:05Speaker 1: Chicken Nugget. And then Board Genius had a blank check
- 31:10Speaker 1: with Kirk Cignetti's name on it. Yeah, good luck.
- 31:14Speaker 2: The mob is fickle. They've lost back-to-back games now. And,
- 31:18Speaker 2: you know, after going to a college football playoff last year,
- 31:21Speaker 2: hosting a first-round game, He hitched his wagon to the
- 31:24Speaker 2: wrong quarterback.
- 31:25Speaker 1: That's your problem. That quarterback told you who he was
- 31:27Speaker 1: at the end of the year, and you ignored him.
- 31:29Speaker 2: He did. And then the loss of Colin Klein going to,
- 31:33Speaker 2: and I know they got beat by Cincinnati this past week,
- 31:35Speaker 2: but going to Kansas State, and look, I think that'll
- 31:38Speaker 2: ultimately work out. But I think the offense is completely
- 31:41Speaker 2: different from the offense last year. And I think that's
- 31:44Speaker 2: going to lead to frustrations for the defense because defense
- 31:46Speaker 2: can only carry them so much. And once they got
- 31:48Speaker 2: to halftime down 14-3, that game was kind of over.
- 31:51Speaker 2: But then they exploded in the third quarter.
- 31:53Speaker 1: We touched on it in the lead-up to the season,
- 31:55Speaker 1: but probably not enough. Connor O'Gara was the first person
- 31:58Speaker 1: I saw bring this up. Texas A & M was
- 32:01Speaker 1: the only team Connor said, the only team I'm aware
- 32:03Speaker 1: of in the SEC that's hiring a guy that's never
- 32:06Speaker 1: called plays as a coordinator. That's right. But his stock
- 32:10Speaker 1: was so high. Holman Wiggins' stock was high. But in hindsight,
- 32:15Speaker 1: we talked about it some, but probably not strongly enough, Jim.
- 32:18Speaker 1: In hindsight, you kept the quarterback that showed you who
- 32:22Speaker 1: he was at the end of the year, and that
- 32:23Speaker 1: wasn't great. And you doubled down on it by getting
- 32:26Speaker 1: a coordinator that has never called plays. That was a
- 32:29Speaker 1: pretty bold combo right there to keep Marcel Reed, invest
- 32:32Speaker 1: in him, and pair him up with a coordinator that
- 32:35Speaker 1: has never called plays with live bullets.
- 32:37Speaker 2: Well, and they didn't look disciplined. They had seven penalties,
- 32:40Speaker 2: a couple of turnovers. The yardage was just complete mismatch.
- 32:45Speaker 2: 506 yards to 197. I mean, just complete domination.
- 32:48Speaker 1: That hurts.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Look, and I said this last week or a couple
- 32:52Speaker 2: of weeks, I guess it was last week after the
- 32:54Speaker 2: Kentucky loss. They lost 10 guys that are now playing
- 32:56Speaker 2: on Sundays, but that can't be an excuse for A & M.
- 32:58Speaker 3: 7-3-7, ag.
- 33:01Speaker 1: He's an awful coach, an awful evaluator of talent, and
- 33:04Speaker 1: an awful motivator. He can shove grind up his ass. Wow.
- 33:11Speaker 2: I think Elko's a really good coach. I don't know
- 33:13Speaker 2: if he's gotten lazy with this extension or not, but
- 33:15Speaker 2: it's not A & M football. They attack the quarterback.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Zero sacks Saturday night.
- 33:20Speaker 1: When was the extension?
- 33:21Speaker 2: 819 Ag, by the way.
- 33:22Speaker 1: I'm so pissed at Elko right now. I'd take Kenny
- 33:24Speaker 1: Chesney over him. I'm not a Kenny Chesney fan. But
- 33:27Speaker 1: here's what you guys talk about all the time. Both
- 33:29Speaker 1: of you have said this before. Evan's 0-100. It doesn't matter.
- 33:35Speaker 1: No one will ever have sustained success here.
- 33:38Speaker 3: It won't.
- 33:40Speaker 2: It's just like a jinxed program.
- 33:42Speaker 1: I can't believe they're saying that out loud. I mean.
- 33:46Speaker 4: I.
- 33:48Speaker 2: Swear. I know a couple of A & M fans,
- 33:51Speaker 2: and they thought he was... The next big deal.
- 33:55Speaker 1: This was just last year. If you dropped prime Nick
- 33:57Speaker 1: Saban or current Kirby Smart in there, you would have success.
- 34:01Speaker 1: But those don't grow on trees. It is hard to
- 34:03Speaker 1: find those guys. Cignetti would have success. Maybe Cignetti won.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Bob Chesney. Well, everybody's going to want Bob Chesney. And
- 34:10Speaker 1: I would say buyer beware. I think Chesney does a
- 34:13Speaker 1: good job. But we are anointing Chesney this genius after
- 34:17Speaker 1: two years at JMU and three. Four games at UCLA?
- 34:20Speaker 2: It would take him right now.
- 34:21Speaker 1: I know. I'm just saying. Yeah, but they just beat them.
- 34:24Speaker 1: Breaks off Maryland. Who's awful.
- 34:26Speaker 2: I know.
- 34:27Speaker 1: At home, they have beaten.
- 34:29Speaker 2: Purdue.
- 34:29Speaker 1: Purdue.
- 34:30Speaker 2: San Diego State.
- 34:31Speaker 1: San Diego State. And I watched the game to start
- 34:34Speaker 1: the year, and I cannot now remember who it was.
- 34:36Speaker 2: I mean, look, it hasn't been murderer's row, but just
- 34:39Speaker 2: watching how buttoned up they are.
- 34:41Speaker 1: They beat Cal. Cal on the road. That's right. So
- 34:43Speaker 1: that's their win. So San Diego State, Cal on the road,
- 34:45Speaker 1: Purdue at home, and Maryland on the road.
- 34:48Speaker 2: There's just something about a coach that comes in and
- 34:51Speaker 2: run the football at the level they run it with
- 34:53Speaker 2: Wayne Knight. And that's exactly what Summerall's doing. I mean,
- 34:55Speaker 2: Chesney and Summerall right now, the stamp they've immediately made
- 34:58Speaker 2: on these programs, they're physical teams.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Back to cut 14, Tyler, if you can. Lane Kiffin
- 35:05Speaker 1: said this after the game the other night. Now, LSU,
- 35:08Speaker 1: you just heard all the stats. Big win, bouncing back.
- 35:11Speaker 1: That's the flip side now. Ole Miss got beat at
- 35:13Speaker 1: Florida coming off of that win. LSU had to come back.
- 35:16Speaker 1: back down to earth or get back up after the
- 35:19Speaker 1: heartbreaking loss in Oxford. And they beat Texas A &
- 35:22Speaker 1: M 35-6. Leavitt was 17-23, 3-12, one interception, his sixth
- 35:28Speaker 1: of the year. But he pulled a hamstring early on.
- 35:32Speaker 1: Cut 11, Tyler, if you can. My bad there. Here's
- 35:34Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin afterwards talking about the Leavitt injury and how
- 35:38Speaker 1: it may have turned into a positive.
- 35:41Speaker 4: Guys fighting through injuries. Sam, obviously, is very injured. I joke, Tim,
- 35:45Speaker 4: maybe it was the best thing that happened because– He
- 35:47Speaker 4: had to stay in the pocket and throw on time
- 35:49Speaker 4: because he knew he couldn't run. But really gutsy performance
- 35:53Speaker 4: by him. I was actually getting ready to take him out,
- 35:55Speaker 4: and he said no way was he coming out. He
- 35:58Speaker 4: was going to play through it.
- 36:00Speaker 1: He couldn't put pressure on the leg. I mean, he
- 36:02Speaker 1: was basically, he hopped over to the sidelines basically on
- 36:04Speaker 1: one leg.
- 36:05Speaker 2: That was about as well as I've seen him throw it.
- 36:07Speaker 1: I know.
- 36:07Speaker 2: I mean, going back to the Arizona State days. Yeah,
- 36:10Speaker 2: Kiffin might be right. Maybe he's a pocket passer that
- 36:12Speaker 2: wants to be. Most mobile guys want to show you, no,
- 36:14Speaker 2: I'm a pocket passer. I'm not a mobile guy.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Maybe Sam Levitt's the obvious.
- 36:18Speaker 2: The upside for Levitt is his ability when he creates
- 36:21Speaker 2: with his legs and what a downhill runner he is. Well,
- 36:24Speaker 2: he couldn't do it.
- 36:24Speaker 1: I mean, he was stuck in that pocket and I mean,
- 36:27Speaker 1: he looked the best he's looked all year.
- 36:29Speaker 2: I mean, he averaged almost 14 yards a throw.
- 36:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:32Speaker 1: We'll get back into selecting our games to finish up
- 36:36Speaker 1: talking college football in our next segment. But, Forrester, can
- 36:39Speaker 1: you give me the AP poll again? Mike Rodak of a–
- 36:45Speaker 1: where's Mike now?
- 36:45Speaker 3: 24-7?
- 36:45Speaker 1: Yeah, Bama Online, I believe it is.
- 36:49Speaker 3: 24-7.
- 36:49Speaker 1: Rodak pointed out that Alabama now joins Nebraska as the
- 36:56Speaker 1: only program to be ranked in the AP poll for
- 37:00Speaker 1: 300 or more consecutive weeks. Nebraska from, I think it
- 37:03Speaker 1: was like 1981 to the mid-early 2000s, Nebraska was there
- 37:09Speaker 1: for 348 weeks. Alabama has now been ranked for 300
- 37:13Speaker 1: consecutive weeks. And those are the only two programs ever
- 37:16Speaker 1: to go 300 or more.
- 37:18Speaker 2: Well, this Alabama team is becoming sneaky good.
- 37:21Speaker 1: They seem to have a good chemistry, and boy... And
- 37:28Speaker 1: I'll say this, too. They distribute the ball around to
- 37:30Speaker 1: a lot of people. Nobody seems to be angry that
- 37:33Speaker 1: I'm only catching two balls or three balls a game.
- 37:36Speaker 1: But they've got something special at quarterback. They do.
- 37:39Speaker 2: And he is one of those guys that just gets
- 37:41Speaker 2: better each and every week. And the game is continuing
- 37:45Speaker 2: to slow down. I don't really know what his weakness is.
- 37:47Speaker 2: I don't think he's got one. And I think he's
- 37:49Speaker 2: just going to continue to climb up. But back to
- 37:53Speaker 2: the way they play. The first couple of years under Kalen,
- 37:57Speaker 2: there was some undisciplined moments. But for them to only
- 38:00Speaker 2: have four penalties, no turnovers, everybody seems to be on
- 38:04Speaker 2: the same page right now.
- 38:04Speaker 1: You kind of wonder what this team would look like
- 38:06Speaker 1: when they actually got off to a fast start. And
- 38:08Speaker 1: oh my lord. Let's give credit to that offensive line, Brown.
- 38:12Speaker 1: It's been really good. It's so clean. Now, they didn't
- 38:15Speaker 1: run the ball as good as they wanted to, but
- 38:16Speaker 1: the pocket he had in that game. to throw passes downfield,
- 38:20Speaker 1: to layer some passes in there. It took some time
- 38:22Speaker 1: for the routes to happen. Trust me, if they pass
- 38:25Speaker 1: block like that for him, and Dylan Stewart doesn't have
- 38:30Speaker 1: his head screwed on right, but South Carolina's got some
- 38:32Speaker 1: pass rushers on that team, and they were pretty much
- 38:35Speaker 1: a non-factor, and they made themselves, Dylan Stewart specifically, a non-factor.
- 38:40Speaker 1: But if you continue to pass block like that, teams
- 38:42Speaker 1: are not going to keep crashing that run. They are
- 38:45Speaker 1: going to have to respect Keelan Russell, A, his ability
- 38:49Speaker 1: to run, and B, his ability to stand back there
- 38:50Speaker 1: and pick you apart, nothing will help the run game
- 38:53Speaker 1: more than that. The more they respect Keelan Russell, the
- 38:56Speaker 1: better the run game will be. I was surprised that
- 38:59Speaker 1: there has been very little pressure right up the middle
- 39:02Speaker 1: over Del Gotti at center. Because I thought maybe that
- 39:05Speaker 1: would be, that's where the most dangerous pressure comes for
- 39:08Speaker 1: a quarterback. And Del Gotti played an unbelievable game protecting
- 39:12Speaker 1: the quarterback in the middle.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Yeah, this kid, I mean, so South Carolina ended up
- 39:18Speaker 2: with the two sacks. The Dylan Stewart situation. I know
- 39:23Speaker 2: Shane Beamer has suspended him.
- 39:25Speaker 1: Indefinitely. Which bothered you the most? The punch or him
- 39:30Speaker 1: walking off the field and the coach telling him to
- 39:31Speaker 1: hurry up and he must have said something because Beamer
- 39:33Speaker 1: and him really got into it. ESPN did not catch
- 39:37Speaker 1: this part, but somebody on the sidelines did. They send
- 39:39Speaker 1: his sub in. He grabs his sub, turns him around,
- 39:42Speaker 1: and pushes him.
- 39:42Speaker 2: Back to the sideline. That's when the coaches had to
- 39:45Speaker 2: start barking at him. The insubordination is worse. I think
- 39:48Speaker 2: that will hurt him on the next level more.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Because the Alabama guy was giving it to him pretty good.
- 39:54Speaker 1: If you watch the whole play, Ford blocks him to
- 39:56Speaker 1: the ground. Pancakes him. Pancakes him and then tells him
- 40:00Speaker 1: about it.
- 40:01Speaker 2: That was all frustration. It was a stupid penalty because
- 40:04Speaker 2: that was a You know, full extension pretty much.
- 40:07Speaker 1: He did it when the lights were out, though. That
- 40:08Speaker 1: was pretty good.
- 40:09Speaker 2: He did it when the lights were out. The boy
- 40:10Speaker 2: that ref's looking right at it, and he threw a flag.
- 40:12Speaker 2: The insubordination, though. I mean, this guy's a projected top
- 40:16Speaker 2: ten pick.
- 40:16Speaker 1: I wouldn't want him. Todd McShay had him number three overall.
- 40:21Speaker 1: I wouldn't want him.
- 40:23Speaker 2: That could hurt the stock a little bit.
- 40:24Speaker 3: It could.
- 40:24Speaker 1: I mean, the kid, when his head's screwed on, is
- 40:26Speaker 1: a heck of a pass rusher. Yeah, but see, I
- 40:28Speaker 1: wouldn't want him either, Brim, because at some point in
- 40:31Speaker 1: the NFL, we're going to have bad stretches. That's right.
- 40:34Speaker 1: We're going to have bad moments. Is this what you're
- 40:36Speaker 1: going to turn into? Is it that easy to get
- 40:38Speaker 1: under your skin? A tight end blocks you to the
- 40:39Speaker 1: ground and then gets in your ear about it and
- 40:42Speaker 1: you're going to punch a guy? Yeah, the best trash
- 40:44Speaker 1: talkers in the world are in the NFL.
- 40:45Speaker 2: That's right, and you're going to get blocked to the
- 40:46Speaker 2: ground again. We knew this defense was going to be good.
- 40:49Speaker 2: Did anybody have any idea how good luke metz and
- 40:52Speaker 2: caleb woodson.
- 40:52Speaker 1: Were gonna be though luke metz is a head i
- 40:54Speaker 1: mean i like the way you paired them up together
- 40:56Speaker 1: though like metz is getting a lot of headline woodson's
- 40:58Speaker 1: really good.
- 40:59Speaker 2: Yeah i'm just saying they're always around the ball yeah
- 41:01Speaker 2: but metz is always looking to blow somebody up i
- 41:03Speaker 2: mean you saw it on that punt return when the
- 41:05Speaker 2: kid gets airborne.
- 41:06Speaker 1: Yeah i mean he's he's he's looking to blow people up.
- 41:09Speaker 2: You know and keelan hadn't had to win a game
- 41:11Speaker 2: yet you know what i'm saying like that's right The
- 41:14Speaker 2: comeback happened so quick against Kentucky, and they just kind
- 41:17Speaker 2: of wiped them away. And the same thing with Florida State.
- 41:21Speaker 2: I'm excited about Saturday, and I'm going to stick with
- 41:23Speaker 2: Mississippi State right now. It's an 11 o'clock game, so
- 41:25Speaker 2: I'm not going to touch it. But I think that
- 41:28Speaker 2: is going to be a back-and-forth track meet.
- 41:30Speaker 1: Potential upset alert for somebody tomorrow? Is it 6 1⁄2?
- 41:33Speaker 2: Is that where it is right now?
- 41:34Speaker 1: It was 6 the last time I saw it. We
- 41:36Speaker 1: played at 6 1⁄2. Where did it open?
- 41:39Speaker 2: I saw Alabama three and a half in a couple
- 41:41Speaker 2: of places.
- 41:41Speaker 1: I did too. And then this morning I look again
- 41:43Speaker 1: and I see six and a half. I was like,
- 41:44Speaker 1: surely it didn't shoot up that much.
- 41:45Speaker 2: This is where it should be. Three and a half
- 41:47Speaker 2: was too generous. And I think Mississippi State's good.
- 41:49Speaker 1: I felt a little skinny.
- 41:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:51Speaker 1: Three and a half.
- 41:52Speaker 2: I think this is going to be a hell of
- 41:53Speaker 2: a game. And this might be the moment where he
- 41:54Speaker 2: has to actually win a game. Yeah.
- 41:56Speaker 1: 11 a.m., which benefits Alabama a little bit. I think so.
- 42:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 42:01Speaker 1: But there'll be 60,000 cowbells. If they could do it
- 42:04Speaker 1: over again, this would be the primetime ABC game. Zero
- 42:06Speaker 1: doubt about it, because they're showing Clemson and Miami. This
- 42:08Speaker 1: should be a much better game than Miami.
- 42:10Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. I mean, you know, game day, I guess,
- 42:11Speaker 2: is in Iowa City, right?
- 42:12Speaker 1: Yeah, because they're catching hell for going to the SEC
- 42:16Speaker 1: every week.
- 42:16Speaker 2: Well, I would be back in Starkville.
- 42:19Speaker 1: And somehow, Iowa-Ohio State did not end up on Fox
- 42:23Speaker 1: Big Noon. It's a 2-30 kick. So they can go
- 42:25Speaker 1: do a 2-30 Big Ten game. that is justifiable with
- 42:29Speaker 1: Ohio State going to Iowa.
- 42:30Speaker 2: That might be a problem for Iowa this week.
- 42:32Speaker 1: Could be a problem for Iowa. What, Ohio State? Yeah,
- 42:35Speaker 1: I'd say. We'll see if it's a problem for Bama
- 42:37Speaker 1: over in Starkville, 11 a.m., and should be a fun
- 42:41Speaker 1: weekend coming up. Weather may be an issue there, by
- 42:43Speaker 1: the way, Bama and State. We've got a so-easter, a
- 42:46Speaker 1: south-easter coming through.
- 42:47Speaker 2: A so-easter.
- 42:49Speaker 1: When we come back, the final thoughts on this college
- 42:51Speaker 1: football weekend. We'll bounce to a couple more games. And
- 42:53Speaker 1: then don't forget, the show continues for two more hours
- 42:55Speaker 1: on our Next Round platforms at Next Round Live at
- 42:57Speaker 1: Next Round Live. That includes Joel Klatt, who will be
- 43:00Speaker 1: with us at 1230 Eastern, 1130 Central. This is the
- 43:03Speaker 1: Next Round, presented by Hard Rock Bets on Sport & State.
- 43:06Speaker 1: All right, final 10 minutes of the show after Brownie
- 43:09Speaker 1: tells us about XXXY. It is a clothing line that
- 43:14Speaker 1: basically was a revolution. I mean, if you want to
- 43:18Speaker 1: put it that way, the T... that led to a movement.
- 43:22Speaker 1: That is XXXY Clothing. Jennifer Say, former national champion gymnast,
- 43:26Speaker 1: former Levi's brand president, walked away from a corporate job
- 43:29Speaker 1: rather than say something she did not believe in. She
- 43:31Speaker 1: started XXXY Athletics instead. Here's the mission. In their words,
- 43:35Speaker 1: empower female athletes and take a stand for fair competition.
- 43:38Speaker 1: The T that launched a movement is what they call it.
- 43:40Speaker 1: It is real athletic apparel, not just a slogan on
- 43:43Speaker 1: a shirt. Performance tops, tanks, sports bras, leggings, shorts, training sets, hoodies, hats,
- 43:48Speaker 1: graphic tees, men's and women's clothing. And again, clothing worn
- 43:51Speaker 1: by athletes that actually have put something on the line.
- 43:54Speaker 1: And right now, new customers can get 20% off your
- 43:56Speaker 1: first order when you sign up. Free shipping over $ 100
- 43:59Speaker 1: at xxxyathletics.com. That is xx-xyathletics.com. All right, LT, pick a
- 44:08Speaker 1: game for us.
- 44:10Speaker 2: Let's go to the ACC Wake Forest in Louisville.
- 44:15Speaker 1: What an upset.
- 44:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, we were just talking about Louisville might
- 44:19Speaker 2: be the best in the ACC.
- 44:20Speaker 1: And we were looking at their schedule saying, where are
- 44:22Speaker 1: they going to drop a game? Two teams out of
- 44:25Speaker 1: the ACC, Louisville and Miami. Where are they going to
- 44:27Speaker 1: drop a game? Well, it's going to be a home
- 44:29Speaker 1: to Wake Forest, that's where. And then here comes Wake Forest,
- 44:31Speaker 1: and what's crazy is that Gio Lopez... is playing so good. Remember,
- 44:35Speaker 1: he was at North Carolina, and they didn't want him.
- 44:37Speaker 2: Yeah, and I didn't think there was anything flukish about
- 44:40Speaker 2: that game at all.
- 44:41Speaker 1: Not a bit, nope.
- 44:41Speaker 2: I mean, it was back and forth the entire game.
- 44:45Speaker 2: Keen Holtz is a really, really good quarterback. One bad mistake.
- 44:50Speaker 2: They just weren't able to run the football. And, like,
- 44:52Speaker 2: you just expect with the Browns in the backfield that
- 44:55Speaker 2: Louisville can run the football 75 yards, two yards per carry.
- 44:59Speaker 2: But what a win for Jake Deckard. That's another guy
- 45:01Speaker 2: that's going to get looks.
- 45:02Speaker 1: That's right. He's only 43 years old. And if you
- 45:04Speaker 1: go back and look how they played Miami, that was
- 45:07Speaker 1: only 33 to 20. And they were sort of competitive
- 45:10Speaker 1: with Miami. We should have saw this coming. We should have,
- 45:14Speaker 1: but we didn't. No, we did not.
- 45:16Speaker 2: The ACC is wild.
- 45:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, it has turned in.
- 45:20Speaker 2: Because, like, Virginia is only a two-and-a-half-point favorite in Tallahassee
- 45:23Speaker 2: this week.
- 45:23Speaker 1: I know. Figure that one out. I mean, that screams
- 45:25Speaker 1: Florida State, doesn't it? And I was thinking about it
- 45:28Speaker 1: this weekend after watching the end of that Louisville wake
- 45:30Speaker 1: game as Louisville was trying to get that field goal off.
- 45:33Speaker 1: We have gotten back to– I'm going to say it
- 45:37Speaker 1: right now, though. I'm not 100% certain on it because
- 45:39Speaker 1: I just haven't played anybody. Miami– Plus the will of destiny.
- 45:43Speaker 1: Reese used to, he made famous the ACC will of destiny,
- 45:47Speaker 1: where you could just spin and any outcome was believable.
- 45:50Speaker 1: Outside of Miami, I think that's about what you get
- 45:52Speaker 1: out of the ACC right now. Because SMU did not
- 45:54Speaker 1: look good against most state. Uh-uh. They only won that
- 45:57Speaker 1: game by 10.
- 45:57Speaker 3: Yep.
- 45:58Speaker 1: Virginia Tech goes on the road now. They played in
- 46:00Speaker 1: terrible conditions, but they barely beat Boston College on the road.
- 46:03Speaker 2: I do think that that's a fascinating game this week,
- 46:05Speaker 2: Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech, because you've got two 4-0s there.
- 46:07Speaker 2: I think we'll learn a little bit more about that.
- 46:10Speaker 2: I think Duke is also a team that we're probably
- 46:13Speaker 2: not talking about enough.
- 46:14Speaker 1: We talked about them a little last week.
- 46:16Speaker 2: The fact that they're getting no respect at all.
- 46:18Speaker 1: They're at a part of their schedule that they don't
- 46:20Speaker 1: really jump in onto our main TVs yet, but they're coming.
- 46:24Speaker 1: They're coming soon. So this weekend, if you're not paying attention,
- 46:27Speaker 1: Miami at Clemson, Notre Dame playing at UNC.
- 46:32Speaker 2: Massive numbers on both of them, though.
- 46:34Speaker 1: Yeah, bad schedules for Miami and Notre Dame. But we're
- 46:38Speaker 1: so yearning to see those teams tested at all. Do
- 46:41Speaker 1: we at least get what Indiana and Northwestern was Friday
- 46:44Speaker 1: night in either one of these games? Can Dabo make
- 46:47Speaker 1: it interesting against Miami? Can Belichick make it interesting against
- 46:50Speaker 1: Notre Dame, both of them being at home? I don't
- 46:53Speaker 1: know about you guys watching in real time. Did you
- 46:55Speaker 1: ever feel like Northwestern was going to win that game?
- 46:57Speaker 1: I never felt like they were going to, but God,
- 47:00Speaker 1: I was cheering for them.
- 47:00Speaker 2: I was too. Boy, if they would have gotten that
- 47:02Speaker 2: onside kick.
- 47:03Speaker 3: I know.
- 47:05Speaker 2: I do think they're good, and I think they're going
- 47:08Speaker 2: to actually beat Penn State this week.
- 47:10Speaker 1: I asked that a while. That's going to be awesome.
- 47:12Speaker 2: Bad loss for Matt Campbell.
- 47:14Speaker 3: It is. I was.
- 47:16Speaker 1: The reason I asked that question, I was going to say,
- 47:17Speaker 1: do you think you'll watch either one of those games
- 47:19Speaker 1: and at any moment feel like North Carolina or Clemson
- 47:22Speaker 1: are going to beat Notre Dame or Miami?
- 47:23Speaker 2: I don't think Clemson can hang offensively with Miami. I
- 47:26Speaker 2: think that's the problem for Clemson. You know, maybe North
- 47:30Speaker 2: Carolina could yuck it up enough, but probably not.
- 47:33Speaker 1: Yeah, see, I don't think so either.
- 47:35Speaker 3: And....
- 47:37Speaker 1: That's a shame because how good is Notre Dame and Miami?
- 47:39Speaker 1: They may be great, both of them. We won't know
- 47:41Speaker 1: it until we get to December.
- 47:43Speaker 2: Right. And then, you know, when they play each other.
- 47:45Speaker 1: Yeah, we're going to get to see them play and
- 47:46Speaker 1: then they're probably. That's right. They do play each other
- 47:48Speaker 1: in November. Yeah, they go head to head. But I mean,
- 47:50Speaker 1: that is not going to be a game that's going
- 47:52Speaker 1: to be a playoff.
- 47:52Speaker 2: I guess we get a barometer on Notre Dame because
- 47:54Speaker 2: they got to go to Provo to take on BYU.
- 47:56Speaker 2: That's tough game.
- 47:57Speaker 1: BYU up to number 10. in the AP poll. I
- 48:00Speaker 1: think Miami's only path to not being in the playoffs.
- 48:02Speaker 1: That schedule is bad enough that if they lost to
- 48:05Speaker 1: Notre Dame and then lost in the conference championship game,
- 48:08Speaker 1: it could get dicey for them. Oh, yeah. As a
- 48:10Speaker 1: two-loss team.
- 48:10Speaker 2: Oh, I think they're done.
- 48:11Speaker 1: Because they're just going to have no good wins at all.
- 48:14Speaker 1: I mean, there's going to be nothing on there. Pick
- 48:16Speaker 1: another game for us, Brownie. Before I pick a game,
- 48:18Speaker 1: can I say the SEC has made a statement on
- 48:21Speaker 1: the onside kick? We brought this up earlier. They have
- 48:23Speaker 1: come out and said it was not administered correctly. That
- 48:27Speaker 1: it was an illegal onside kick. That the ball, as
- 48:29Speaker 1: Terry McCauley said on Twitter, the ball must be touching
- 48:31Speaker 1: the 35. And it should have been five yards and
- 48:35Speaker 1: a re-kick. See, I didn't know that part of it.
- 48:39Speaker 1: I thought maybe that Texas just gets the ball. That
- 48:42Speaker 1: it was an illegal kick and they get the ball.
- 48:43Speaker 1: But it should have been a five-yard plus re-kick. So
- 48:45Speaker 1: when touching the 35... It's got to be on the
- 48:50Speaker 1: ground or on a tee on the 35. That is correct.
- 48:52Speaker 1: At least the nose of the ball has to touch
- 48:53Speaker 1: the 35. So a drop kick is not legal. No,
- 48:56Speaker 1: I think a drop kick is. You've just got to
- 48:58Speaker 1: drop it where at least the nose of the ball
- 49:00Speaker 1: touches the 35. They're not saying that. I can go
- 49:04Speaker 1: back to the statement. They're not saying the dropkick itself
- 49:06Speaker 1: is illegal.
- 49:07Speaker 2: That is inexcusable. I know you don't see that a lot.
- 49:10Speaker 1: Well, that is a weird rule. You never think you're
- 49:13Speaker 1: going to have to enforce that rule.
- 49:13Speaker 2: No, but you would think that you would pick it
- 49:15Speaker 2: up immediately because I did think it was weird the
- 49:17Speaker 2: way he was doing it, trying to execute it.
- 49:20Speaker 1: Like, by rule, because what bothered me was him being
- 49:23Speaker 1: able to walk around back there. Okay, that also, Scott's
- 49:25Speaker 1: got the statement, that also is, by rule, a violation.
- 49:28Speaker 1: So they missed two calls.
- 49:29Speaker 2: On that one play. Yeah, that was.
- 49:30Speaker 1: I've never seen that. It was weird that he was
- 49:32Speaker 1: able to sort of be moving around back there.
- 49:34Speaker 2: Yeah, it's almost like a legal motion on.
- 49:37Speaker 1: So the statement says a drop kick is permissible, but
- 49:40Speaker 1: a free kick must be made from the kicking team's
- 49:42Speaker 1: restraining line, which is the 35 on a kickoff. So
- 49:44Speaker 1: if he stood on the 35, he's okay. The ball
- 49:48Speaker 1: has to be on the 35 when he kicks it.
- 49:51Speaker 1: In addition, after the ball is ready for play, the
- 49:54Speaker 1: kicker may not change his lateral position between the hash marks,
- 49:57Speaker 1: which is what you're talking about. That spot can change
- 50:00Speaker 1: only after a charge timeout or a subsequent kick. The
- 50:02Speaker 1: kicker's movement after the ready signal violated the rule. So
- 50:04Speaker 1: there were two rules violated there. The correct enforcement, five-yard penalty,
- 50:08Speaker 1: and replay of the down. See, that.
- 50:12Speaker 1: Listen, I'd never seen anyone try it.
- 50:16Speaker 4: Me neither.
- 50:16Speaker 1: I didn't even know if it was legal. And then
- 50:17Speaker 1: I was like, unbelievable that this is legal. How has
- 50:20Speaker 1: nobody ever tried this before?
- 50:21Speaker 2: And that's why if it stood out to us, if
- 50:23Speaker 2: you're an official, you should know the rules.
- 50:25Speaker 1: Yeah, because that official has watched a lot of film
- 50:27Speaker 1: and done a lot of games. At some point, the
- 50:28Speaker 1: official's going to say, wait a minute.
- 50:30Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 50:30Speaker 2: And that's a.
- 50:31Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 50:31Speaker 2: That could have been a $ 50 million game. I don't
- 50:33Speaker 2: know what the payoff now is for a college football
- 50:35Speaker 2: playoff appearance.
- 50:35Speaker 1: Yeah, but if Tennessee comes back and wins that game,
- 50:37Speaker 1: it may put them in the playoffs, and then all
- 50:39Speaker 1: of a sudden Texas has lost any margin for error.
- 50:41Speaker 1: I mean, at that point, when they see it lining up,
- 50:44Speaker 1: and listen, I love the SEC, and everybody's got these
- 50:47Speaker 1: command centers now, which are the best football minds that
- 50:50Speaker 1: you have in the conference. When they were lining up
- 50:52Speaker 1: to do this, you've got to time out. At that point,
- 50:54Speaker 1: should you not be buzzing down to them, communicating with
- 50:59Speaker 1: Birmingham and saying, hey, Stop play. They're not allowed to
- 51:02Speaker 1: do it the way you've got to tell them to
- 51:03Speaker 1: do it like this. So you mean in real time
- 51:06Speaker 1: or right after the kick? Yeah, I mean, it seems
- 51:08Speaker 1: like Birmingham should be able to buzz in.
- 51:12Speaker 2: Is Jeff Banks still special teams coach?
- 51:14Speaker 1: At Texas, yeah.
- 51:15Speaker 2: He should know this rule, too. I mean, that should
- 51:17Speaker 2: have been something.
- 51:17Speaker 1: That's all that guy has ever done.
- 51:18Speaker 2: He should have been in the ass of one of
- 51:19Speaker 2: these officials.
- 51:20Speaker 1: Yeah, he's been special teams coach forever.
- 51:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 51:22Speaker 1: I just don't know how hard this stuff is to
- 51:24Speaker 1: catch in real time. I've never coached, but I'm with Lance.
- 51:26Speaker 1: If you've been the special teams coach that long, at
- 51:28Speaker 1: some point you're like, that ball was not kicked from
- 51:29Speaker 1: the 35. Yeah, and the whole moving around thing. I
- 51:33Speaker 1: was watching, and it seems like Herbstree, and they were like,
- 51:37Speaker 1: can he move around like that? I don't know. It
- 51:41Speaker 1: was a weird thing. Give me one more game, Brandy.
- 51:45Speaker 1: I was going to go Auburn-Vandy. We'll talk more about
- 51:47Speaker 1: it in the next show. I'll tell you what. One
- 51:50Speaker 1: of the biggest Auburn fans I know texted me after
- 51:52Speaker 1: that game. An Auburn win, by the way, on homecoming,
- 51:55Speaker 1: which Auburn has not done a lot of at Jordan-Hare recently.
- 51:58Speaker 1: You would think fans would have left the game happier,
- 52:00Speaker 1: but fans are still... First.
- 52:02Speaker 2: Home SEC win in 671 days.
- 52:05Speaker 1: I know, and fans still have some anxiety over this.
- 52:07Speaker 1: One of the biggest Auburn fans, I know this is
- 52:09Speaker 1: a guy that's been a 40-year season ticket holder, almost
- 52:12Speaker 1: immediately after the game said, your honest opinion, other than
- 52:15Speaker 1: Samford and Arkansas, who else can we beat? And I'm like,
- 52:18Speaker 1: you just won the game. Yeah. I know, but it
- 52:21Speaker 1: was Vandy.
- 52:21Speaker 2: Boy, that block punt was massive.
- 52:23Speaker 1: Oh, it ends up being the difference in the game.
- 52:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I kind of agree with him. I mean, I
- 52:27Speaker 2: think you're going to beat Arkansas, and I think you're
- 52:30Speaker 2: going to beat Sanford, and I don't.
- 52:32Speaker 1: See another way. My response to him was, I don't
- 52:34Speaker 1: really like your odds in October.
- 52:36Speaker 2: Yeah, but with all that said, I mean, they're only
- 52:37Speaker 2: a seven-point dog in New England this weekend, so you
- 52:39Speaker 2: never know.
- 52:40Speaker 1: Yeah, and they played Florida 44-39.
- 52:44Speaker 3: Oh, I know.
- 52:44Speaker 1: Florida could be the best team in the SEC. Could be.
- 52:46Speaker 1: Did not feel that close.
- 52:47Speaker 2: Yeah, it felt like a two-touchdown game. But still, you know,
- 52:50Speaker 2: within two touchdowns, Florida's not bad right now.
- 52:53Speaker 1: I mean, you gave up 311 yards to Vandy, but
- 52:56Speaker 1: you held them to 15 points. I think the bigger
- 52:59Speaker 1: concern is, you know, Byron Brown. I'm concerned about the
- 53:03Speaker 1: running game. Yeah, I mean, you can't run the ball. What,
- 53:06Speaker 1: they have 125-ish running the football? We'll talk more about
- 53:09Speaker 1: that in a second. We'll jump into Alabama and Auburn
- 53:12Speaker 1: as we continue. on the next round i just want
- 53:14Speaker 1: to give a shout out um if we can to
- 53:17Speaker 1: jackson corvin um future mount rushmore at auburn you guys
- 53:22Speaker 1: keep saying he can't do it he's the only american
- 53:25Speaker 1: player during the president's cup this weekend to not lose
- 53:29Speaker 1: on the whole weekend he's two down he comes back
- 53:31Speaker 1: to beat siwoo kim as usa rallies to win their
- 53:35Speaker 1: 11th straight president cup but jackson corvin was a superstar.
- 53:39Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, when you said that, it was very laughable,
- 53:43Speaker 2: but the things he's already done early in his career...
- 53:46Speaker 2: are pretty spectacular.
- 53:47Speaker 1: Go back and watch him play the 18th in that match.
- 53:50Speaker 1: He spins the grips off the club. Some tour sauce.
- 53:54Speaker 2: But why do they do this this timing? Like, I
- 53:56Speaker 2: was at Buffalo Wild Wings yesterday, and I walk in,
- 53:58Speaker 2: they've got it on one TV in a back room
- 54:00Speaker 2: for golf fans, but that's it. Like, nobody even knew
- 54:02Speaker 2: that thing happened yesterday.
- 54:04Speaker 1: That's the next round presented by Hard Rock Bet right
- 54:07Speaker 1: here on Sporting State.
