- 0:02You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast The First
- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:07On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:11preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:14learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17You can find more information about our church at

- 0:22Thanks for listening. This morning Scripture comes
- 0:28from Luke Chapter 9, verses 18 through 27.
- 0:36Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were
- 0:39with him, he asked them, Who do the crowd say I am?
- 0:43They replied, some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and
- 0:48still others that one of the prophets of long ago has come
- 0:51back to life. But what about you?
- 0:53He asked, Who do you say I am? Peter answered, God's Messiah.
- 1:00Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.
- 1:03And he said, the Son of Man must suffer many things and be
- 1:07rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers
- 1:10of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be
- 1:14raised to life. Then he said to them, All,
- 1:17Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up
- 1:22their cross daily and follow Me. For whoever wants to save their
- 1:26life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for Me will
- 1:31save it. What good is it for someone to
- 1:34gain the whole world and yet lose or forfeit their very self?
- 1:38Whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be
- 1:42ashamed of them when his, when He comes in His glory and in the
- 1:47glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
- 1:51Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste
- 1:55death before they see the Kingdom of God.
- 1:59This is the word of God for the people of God.
- 2:01Thanks be to God. Amen.
- 2:06Bear with me. I feel fairly lousy this morning
- 2:10and have since about Tuesday, so we're going to get through, but
- 2:17bear with me if my voice is not as strong as it usually is.
- 2:25I don't know how much their stories are told anymore, but if
- 2:31you think about a list of American folk heroes, people
- 2:36like Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone, Paul Bunyan, Wild Bill
- 2:42Hickok, Jeremiah Johnson, John Henry, those kind of people.
- 2:47Do you guys know any of those names?
- 2:49I just said one, one. OK, All right.
- 2:53Well, they, they, they all have something in in common, right?
- 2:56These these figures who have risen to mythological levels,
- 3:03they're all people who are praised for either striking out
- 3:07on their own or or single handedly accomplishing some
- 3:12great work. The values that they represent
- 3:16are not community or interdependence or
- 3:20collaboration. They represent the values of
- 3:23individualism, determination, self reliant, right?
- 3:28These values have contributed to what has been called the myth of
- 3:33rugged American individualism. The idea that with enough hard
- 3:39work and ingenuity and determination, that's all it
- 3:43takes to kind of pull yourself up by your bootstraps and make
- 3:48something of yourself, right. These ideas have been translated
- 3:53into the postmodern American psyche as what Carl Truman calls
- 3:58expressive individualism. Expressive individualism, which
- 4:04is another author Allan Noble sums up, can be described as a
- 4:08mindset that says I am my own and I belong to myself.
- 4:16I am my own and I belong to myself.
- 4:18That kind of sums it all up, right?
- 4:21It's, it's the philosophy that says there's there's no
- 4:25objective truth out there outside of me.
- 4:28There's no reality outside of what I know and I experience and
- 4:33I feel nothing outside of me which determines what is right
- 4:37and good and true. So I'm free, right?
- 4:41I'm free to create meaning and to attribute value however I
- 4:46choose. And, and no one can really tell
- 4:48me otherwise, because that might be their truth, but that doesn't
- 4:54mean it's my truth. We're told that this is what it
- 4:58means to be free, that there are no external constraints placed
- 5:05on us whatsoever. If something feels good to me,
- 5:08then it's right. At least it's right for me.
- 5:14This sounds incredibly free at first, right?
- 5:19No one telling me what to do or how to think.
- 5:23But the reality is it actually becomes a heavy burden on those
- 5:30who are living under this kind of philosophy because it puts
- 5:34all of the responsibility for determining meaning and value on
- 5:40us, right? And that's a burden that we were
- 5:43never meant to bear. And ultimately, this philosophy
- 5:48will collapse in on itself under its own weight because it can't
- 5:54actually support itself, right? And so we see among the the
- 5:59younger generations, the emerging generations, this, this
- 6:03heavy, this heavy told Joe wasn't feeling well, this heavy
- 6:12amount of of mental illness, anxiety struggles.
- 6:18Thankfully, thankfully, Jesus offers an alternative to this
- 6:25philosophy of expressive individual individualism.
- 6:29He offers a true view of reality.
- 6:32And I think we find it in this passage that will just read for
- 6:37us this morning from Luke Chapter 9.
- 6:40In this passage, Jesus has been having a conversation with his
- 6:45disciples about his own identity.
- 6:47Right now, identity is a big part of these conversations,
- 6:51right? In expressive individuality.
- 6:53Who am I and and what is the identity that I choose to to
- 6:58show to the world? And Jesus is here talking with
- 7:01his disciples about his identity.
- 7:03And it's here that Peter makes the confession that Jesus isn't
- 7:07just a prophet, and he's not just John the Baptist come back
- 7:11or Elijah raised from the dead, but that Jesus is God's Messiah,
- 7:18the anointed one that they, as the Jewish people had been
- 7:22waiting for for years and years and years.
- 7:26And it's only after this declaration that Jesus begins to
- 7:30shift his conversations with those same disciples.
- 7:34Everything changes from this point in the gospel.
- 7:38He begins to tell them not only that he came to call people to
- 7:43repentance and to bring healing, to announce the Kingdom of God.
- 7:47He begins to tell them that he must suffer at the hands of the
- 7:51religious leaders, that those same religious leaders would
- 7:56ultimately kill him. But then on the third day he was
- 8:01going to be raised back to life. And then we get to what I think
- 8:08is one of the most important and most difficult things that Jesus
- 8:14says in his entire ministry as recorded in the Gospels, a
- 8:20statement we still need to wrestle with today and which
- 8:25over the course of this sermon series we will wrestle with.
- 8:32In Luke 29 verse 23 it says Then he said to them all, whoever
- 8:41wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up
- 8:47their cross daily and follow me. Let's break this down a bit into
- 8:56some bite sized pieces phrase by phrase and see what it is that
- 9:00Jesus is inviting us into. OK, He says.
- 9:05He begins by saying, whoever wants to be my disciple, anyone
- 9:12who wants to be apprenticed to Jesus, who wants to be with
- 9:16Jesus and become like Jesus and do what Jesus did, anyone who
- 9:22wants to learn to follow the way of Jesus, well, this is what it
- 9:27means to be a disciple. And I believe that this is not
- 9:32just an invitation to those who are already following Jesus and
- 9:36not just for those 12 young men who Jesus had called to be his
- 9:40apprentices. Whoever here means anyone, it
- 9:46means whoever, which means us, right?
- 9:53It can mean us. You could just as easily read
- 9:57this as saying if you want to be Jesus disciple, right?
- 10:06So that's that's the scope of this.
- 10:08This is available to anyone who would follow Jesus.
- 10:13Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves.
- 10:22You must deny yourself. Now, deny can mean to declare
- 10:28something to be untrue, right? It can mean that a refusal to
- 10:34admit something or to give a negative answer to an inquiry,
- 10:41but I don't think that's what Jesus is really meaning here.
- 10:44I I don't think Jesus is calling his followers to acknowledge
- 10:49that or to refuse to acknowledge that we exist, Right?
- 10:52That's, that doesn't make any sense.
- 10:55However, there's another meaning to the word deny, which is to
- 11:00restrain oneself from the gratification of desires.
- 11:06And I think this meaning for our English word deny gets closer to
- 11:10the meaning of the Greek word here, which means to disregard
- 11:14or to pay no attention to or to say no to.
- 11:21So what Jesus is saying is anyone who wants to follow
- 11:24Jesus, well, they're going to have to say no to him or herself
- 11:31at some point. Now this doesn't mean, as it has
- 11:35been interpreted at different points in church history, that
- 11:39we are to abuse ourselves for the sake of Jesus, right?
- 11:43Jesus isn't calling us to self flagellation or to self harm,
- 11:51but he is telling us that following him will involve
- 11:56saying no to at least some of the desires that we experience.
- 12:03Because of the intrusive and infectious nature of sin, all of
- 12:08the desires that we have, they've been disordered apart
- 12:14from God. The things we desire, good
- 12:17things we may want too much of, Things we know that are bad for
- 12:22us, but we still crave things that are normalized in our
- 12:28sinful society, which are contrary to God's way of life,
- 12:33which is revealed in Scripture. These desires are disordered
- 12:39within us, and it's these desires that were called to
- 12:44deny. Now not only are we called to
- 12:48deny ourselves, if we're going to follow Jesus, he goes further
- 12:54and says you actually have to take up your cross daily.
- 13:03And while the cross has become a decoration, right, Something we
- 13:08might put in our churches or our homes might wear as jewelry, as
- 13:15earrings, or around our neck. Something might get tattooed on
- 13:20our bodies too, decorate us and and remind us of things.
- 13:24We must never forget that the cross is one of the most
- 13:30torturous means of execution that humans in our violent and
- 13:36sadistic history have ever developed.
- 13:43It was a means of torture and execution.
- 13:45When Jesus said these words, take up your cross.
- 13:53It didn't fill his hearers with warm mushy feelings or or
- 13:59thoughts about the love of God. It was a symbol of suffering and
- 14:04death. And because it came from the
- 14:07Romans of oppression, the invitation to those who would
- 14:14follow Jesus was an invitation not just to deny themselves, but
- 14:20to actually die to self, or as Paul would write later, to
- 14:25crucify the sinful nature, to put to death the deep of our
- 14:31sinful flesh. And I don't know about you, but
- 14:36this doesn't sound particularly pleasant.
- 14:42But I think if we're, I think that was part of Jesus's point,
- 14:46right? If we're going to follow Jesus,
- 14:50it won't all be pleasant. There will be suffering involved
- 14:55and at times it, it's, it's going to suck, right?
- 15:01And that that's not just a one time, once and for all
- 15:05occurrence that was called to pick up our cross.
- 15:08Jesus says we'll need to take up our cross daily.
- 15:13We'll need to die to our self daily.
- 15:18We'll have to choose to crucify our flesh daily.
- 15:26Now standing on this side of the resurrection, we must also
- 15:31remember that while the cross is a symbol of suffering and death,
- 15:36it is also the path to resurrection life.
- 15:40Or because implicit in Jesus invitation to take up our cross
- 15:45is an invitation to be included in his resurrection as well, to
- 15:49be raised to new life, which is not just eternal after we die,
- 15:55but it's a new way of living in this life.
- 16:01Jesus is describing what it will mean to follow Him.
- 16:08Last phrase of verse 23. Whoever wants to be my disciple
- 16:13must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.
- 16:24It's not an invitation just to adopt Jesus's philosophy of life
- 16:30or to agree to live according to his teachings as best as we can.
- 16:36It's an invitation to submit to Jesus's way of living and the
- 16:43consequences of living that way, because it will be opposed by
- 16:49the powers of this world. It's like Jesus said elsewhere.
- 16:53Elsewhere, if the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated
- 16:58me first. Friends, suffering as a
- 17:03Christian isn't a bug. It's a feature, all right.
- 17:09It's what it means to follow the crucified Lamb.
- 17:15Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up
- 17:20their cross daily and follow me. That's the invitation.
- 17:28Who's ready to sign up? No one's saying it's going to be
- 17:36easy, but friends, it's worth it.
- 17:41It's worth it to acknowledge that you are not your own, that
- 17:45you were bought with a price. And that means we should honor
- 17:49God with the way we live, that we should honor God with our
- 17:52bodies and what we do. Denying ourselves is one way we
- 17:57do that. It's our way of participating in
- 18:02the transformation that God is working in US.
- 18:05And, and This is why the Church has practiced fasting
- 18:10particularly but not exclusively in connection with this season
- 18:15of Lent that we have entered into.
- 18:18And it's why I'm inviting you to join us for our study of the
- 18:23practice of fasting on Wednesday nights or Thursday mornings.
- 18:27Because fasting, when done properly with the right motives,
- 18:36it can be training in denying our self or or our desires.
- 18:42It's practice, maybe even weekly practice, in saying no to our
- 18:51bodies in the midst of a world that is always encouraging us to
- 18:55say yes. Fasting is creating space for
- 19:00God to speak into our lives about those disordered desires.
- 19:08And that's going to mean different things are going to be
- 19:11key for different people, right? Your struggle may be one of the
- 19:15areas that we're going to spend time looking at over the next
- 19:19few weeks. Things like politics and money,
- 19:23your time and entertainment, your sexuality or your pride.
- 19:28But it could just as easily be something else.
- 19:31It could be for you. It could be food or work or the
- 19:34language you use or the alcohol you consume.
- 19:37Things that you know aren't inherently bad in and of
- 19:41themselves, but they, they have to be pursued in their proper
- 19:46place, right? It's, it's the fire principle.
- 19:49Do you know the fire principle? Fire in a fireplace or in your
- 19:55grill or on the stove? It's it's a really good thing.
- 20:00Fire in your attic or in your engine, Really not good thing
- 20:07right in its proper place, desires are good.
- 20:13In the proper confines and constraints that God has given
- 20:17us, desires are good. When we go outside of those
- 20:22things that they become destructive and disordered, and
- 20:27when we fast, we practice putting to death our flesh for a
- 20:34time. We're taking up our cross so
- 20:38that we can find the resurrection life that Jesus is
- 20:42offering to us. The same Spirit that raised
- 20:46Jesus from the dead now living in you.
- 20:51That's the invitation that Jesus is offering.
- 20:55It might sound like an invitation to suffering and
- 20:58submission and suck, but the real invitation is to live the
- 21:05kind of life that Jesus lived in the world of life, surrendered
- 21:10to the Father and empowered by the Spirit.
- 21:13But the only way to find that life is to lose the life we're
- 21:19living, the life bound up in, in sin and self and disordered
- 21:24desires. Because whoever wants to be my
- 21:30disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily
- 21:38and follow me. That's Jesus's call.
- 21:45It's also his invitation. So let me ask again, who is
- 21:51ready to follow? Would you pray with me?
- 22:00Lord Jesus, we are so grateful not just that You came to redeem
- 22:06us, to buy us back from our slavery to sin and death, to
- 22:11hell and the devil. You came to set us free, to give
- 22:18us new life, to make it possible for us to to do what you called
- 22:26us to do, to live as your disciples, to live as your
- 22:30people on earth. Geez, would you make those
- 22:38realities true in US? Would you help us learn what it
- 22:44means to deny ourselves, to say no to ourselves so that we can
- 22:52say yes to you? Would you help us follow you in
- 22:58the path of the cross so that in walking through the cross we can
- 23:03find resurrection life on the other side?
- 23:13You paid a steep price to buy us back, and so we want to honour
- 23:21you with our lives, the things we do in our bodies, the things
- 23:28we do in this world. So, Jesus, would you help us?
- 23:36Would you help us to seriously consider the call and the
- 23:41invitation that you've made to us, with all the good that comes
- 23:47with it and all the suffering that might accompany it?
- 23:54Would you help us to be faithful?
- 23:58Pray this Jesus in your name and for your sake.
- 24:03Amen.
