- Eala owns Washington! This is The Sports Reset for Tuesday August 4th In tennis, Alexandra Eala took the WTA Mubadala DC Open final from top-seeded Jessica Pegula in three sets, closing with a 6 0 third set, and that is a sharp next step for one of the sport’s rising names. Eala, a lefty from the Philippines, had already built momentum with a Miami semifinal run and a WTA 125 title earlier this season, so beating Pegula for a Washington title gives the run real weight. On the ATP side, Taylor Fritz beat Rafael Jodar in straight sets to win the men’s final, using the kind of steady hard-court tennis that keeps him near the front of the American pack. In MLB, The Jays opened their set in Houston with a 3 to 1 win over the Houston Astros, a useful road result against a team with real power. The Chicago Cubs beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 10 to 5 at Wrigley Field, and the St. Louis Cardinals outslugged the New York Yankees 13 to 7 in the loudest baseball score of the night. Looking ahead, The Jays are back at Daikin Park today against the Houston Astros, and the shape of that matchup is pretty clear: Toronto needs efficient pitching and timely offence, while Houston brings one of the better home-run profiles in baseball into the series. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs run it back at Wrigley Field after Chicago’s 10-run night, and that one carries some extra punch because the Cubs have been one of the National League’s more dangerous offences. The St. Louis Cardinals visit the New York Yankees again after putting up 13, while the New York Mets are in Cleveland and the Philadelphia Phillies host the Washington Nationals. Later this week, the National Bank Open continues in Montreal, with major hard-court reps available before Cincinnati and the U.S. Open build-up. Beyond the scoreboard, Connor McDavid publicly backed Mike Babcock as the Edmonton Oilers’ new head coach, with Leon Draisaitl also framing the hire as a fit for a team still chasing the final step.
