- 0:00Aloha. Saturday morning in Hawaiʻi. I'm Mele with what's happening across the islands today.
- 1:36Today is quiet — light winds, a few isolated showers over Big Island slopes, but nothing much. The change arrives tomorrow: trade winds pick up Sunday, and a moist air mass moves in from the east, bringing noticeable showers along windward coasts through Monday. By midweek, things settle back down. If you're at the beach today, west and leeward shores are your best bet.
- 1:55Water-wise, south shore is small today — 3 feet at Waikiki, comfortable for swimmers and beginners. North shore runs 2.6, and the Big Island is glassy at 1.2 feet. The headline is what's coming: a large south swell is building and will hit warning levels by Sunday night into Monday. If you're not experienced, stay out of south shore breaks when that arrives.
- 2:13Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has several closures this week: Kahuku Unit Roads, Kīpukapuaulu Trail due to hazardous trees, and Lava Tube Bridge under repair. The park remains at Advisory level due to Kīlauea activity and volcanic ash. Check the park's website before heading down if those areas are on your itinerary.
- 2:29We posted a guide to bodyboarding for visitors this week — where to start by island, what to rent, how to take a lesson safely, and the shorebreak rules that keep you out of trouble. Today's small surf is actually ideal if you're thinking about learning how to ride your first wave. You'll find the full piece on the site.
- 2:45Sunday into Monday: watch for minor coastal flooding during afternoon and evening high tides on low-lying coastal roads. The incoming south swell and higher-than-normal monthly tides create a real risk through at least Tuesday.
- 2:56Our bodyboarding guide has everything you need to start. Catch you tomorrow morning.
