- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday.
- 0:15It's the 22nd of April, which would you believe, all around
- 0:18the world. Today is International Mother
- 0:21Earth Day. Today is the day that you are
- 0:24invited. In fact, the United Nations asks
- 0:26of you that you and I make a choice to do something that does
- 0:31not involve plastic today. Is there something we can choose
- 0:35that is an alternative to the plastic solution that we would
- 0:38normally face? And when we're walking around
- 0:40today, if we see a piece of litter, particularly a piece of
- 0:43plastic lying on the ground, we can pick it up and dispose of it
- 0:46thoughtfully. And in doing that, we can
- 0:48encourage each other and we can remind ourselves that this
- 0:52planet of ours, we've got to care for and hand it to our kids
- 0:56and their kids and their kids and their kids.
- 0:58I can do that. That's my challenge.
- 1:00I'll do my best. Will you join me, friends?
- 1:02Oh, I hope you will. And no matter what you do with
- 1:05plastic today or not with plastic right now, let's read
- 1:09another chapter of God's Word. Israel has been hoodwinked by
- 1:15those southerners, and they have made a treaty, unbeknownst to
- 1:19them, with some people who live in the land that God had given
- 1:22them. But now they continue further
- 1:24South, and they will defeat the other kings in the South and
- 1:29take over the land that God had prepared for them.
- 1:32So let's do it, friends. Let us continue reading through
- 1:36this incredible conquest where they arrive in their
- 1:39inheritance. As we read Joshua chapter 10,
- 1:51Adonai Zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard that Joshua had captured
- 1:56and completely destroyed I and killed its king, just as he had
- 1:59destroyed the town of Jericho and killed its king.
- 2:03He also learned that the Gibeonites had made peace with
- 2:05Israel and we're now their allies.
- 2:08He and his people became very afraid when they heard all this,
- 2:11because Gibeon was a large town, as large as the royal cities and
- 2:15larger than I, and the Gibeonite men were strong warriors.
- 2:20Sir King Adonai Zedek of Jerusalem sent messages to
- 2:24several other kings. Horem of Hebron, Piram of
- 2:27Jarmoth, Japhai of Lachish, and Dema of Eglon.
- 2:33Come and help me destroy Gibeon, he urged them, for they have
- 2:36made peace with Joshua and the people of Israel.
- 2:39So these five Amorite kings combined their armies for a
- 2:43united attack. They moved all their troops into
- 2:46place and attacked Gibeon. The men of Gibeon quickly sent
- 2:50messages to Joshua at his camp in Gilgal.
- 2:53Don't abandoned your servants now, they pleaded.
- 2:56Come at once, save us, help us, for all the Amurite kings who
- 3:00live in the Hill Country have joined forces to attack us.
- 3:03So Joshua and his entire army, including his best warriors,
- 3:07left Gilgal and set out for Gibeon.
- 3:10Do not be afraid of them, the Lord said to Joshua, for I have
- 3:14given you victory over them. Not a single one of them will be
- 3:18able to stand up to you. Joshua travelled all night from
- 3:22Gilgal and took the Amurite armies by surprise.
- 3:25The Lord threw them into a panic, and the Israelites
- 3:28slaughtered great numbers of them at Gibeon.
- 3:31Then the Israelites chased the enemy along the road to Beth
- 3:34Horon, killing them all along the way to Azaca and Makada.
- 3:40As the Amorites retreated down the road from Beth Horon, the
- 3:43Lord destroyed them with a terrible hailstorm from heaven
- 3:47that continued until they reached Azaca.
- 3:51The hail killed more of the enemy than the Israelites killed
- 3:55with the sword. On the day the Lord gave the
- 3:58Israelites victory over the Amorites, Joshua prayed to the
- 4:02Lord in front of all the people of Israel.
- 4:05He said, Let the sun stand still over Gibeon and the moon over
- 4:10the valley of Ajalon. So the sun stood still and the
- 4:15moon stayed in place until the nation of Israel had defeated
- 4:19its enemies. Is this event not recorded in
- 4:23the Book of Jashah? The sun stayed in the middle of
- 4:26the sky, and it did not set as on a normal day.
- 4:30There has never been a day like this before or since when the
- 4:34Lord answered such a prayer. Surely the Lord fought for
- 4:38Israel that day. Then Joshua and the Israelite
- 4:41army returned to their camp at Gilgal.
- 4:45During the battle, the five kings escaped and hid in a cave
- 4:48at Makada. When Joshua heard that they had
- 4:51been found, he issued this command.
- 4:54Cover the opening of The Cave with large rocks and place
- 4:58guards at the entrance to keep the kings inside.
- 5:01The rest of you, continue chasing the enemy and cut them
- 5:04down from the rear. Don't give them a chance to get
- 5:07back to their towns, for the Lord your God has given you
- 5:10victory over them. So Joshua and the Israelite army
- 5:14continue the slaughter and completely crush the enemy.
- 5:18They totally wiped out the five armies except for a tiny remnant
- 5:23that managed to reach their fortified towns.
- 5:26Then the Israelites returned safely to Joshua in the camp at
- 5:29Makada. After that, no one dared to
- 5:33speak even a word against Israel.
- 5:36Then Joshua said, remove the rocks covering the opening of
- 5:40The Cave and bring the five kings to me.
- 5:43So they brought the five kings out of The Cave, the kings of
- 5:46Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmoth, Lakish, and Eglon.
- 5:51When they brought them out, Joshua told the commanders of
- 5:54his army, Come and put your feet on the King's necks.
- 5:59And they did as they were told. Don't ever be afraid or
- 6:02discouraged, Joshua told his men.
- 6:04Be strong and courageous, for the Lord is going to do this to
- 6:09all of your enemies. Then Joshua killed each of the
- 6:12five kings and impaled them on five sharpened poles where they
- 6:17hung until evening. As the sun was going down,
- 6:21Joshua gave instructions for the bodies of the kings to be taken
- 6:24down from the poles and thrown into The Cave where they had
- 6:27been hiding. Then they covered the opening of
- 6:30The Cave with a pile of large rocks, which remained to this
- 6:34very day. That same day, Joshua captured
- 6:38and destroyed the town of Makadah.
- 6:41He killed everyone in it, including the king, leaving no
- 6:44survivors. He destroyed them all, and he
- 6:47killed the king of Makada, as he had killed the king of Jericho.
- 6:51Then Joshua and the Israelites went to Libna and attacked it
- 6:56there too. The Lord gave them the town and
- 6:58its king. He killed everyone in it,
- 7:00leaving no survivors. Then Joshua killed the king of
- 7:04Libna, as he had killed the king of Jericho.
- 7:07From Libna, Joshua and the Israelites went to Lakish and
- 7:11attacked it. Here again the Lord gave them
- 7:13Lakish. Joshua took it on the second day
- 7:17and killed everyone in it, just as he had done in Libna.
- 7:20During the attack on Lakish, King Horem of Gezza arrived with
- 7:25his army to help defend the town, but Joshua's men killed
- 7:29him and his army, leaving no survivors.
- 7:33Then Joshua and the Israelite army went on to Eglon and
- 7:36attacked it. They captured it that day and
- 7:39killed everyone in it. He completely destroyed
- 7:42everyone, just as he had done in Lakish.
- 7:45From Eglon, Joshua and the Israelite army went up to Hebron
- 7:49and attacked it. They captured the town and
- 7:52killed everyone in it, including its king, leaving no survivors.
- 7:57They did the same thing to all of its surrounding villages, and
- 8:01just as he had done in Eglon, he completely destroyed the entire
- 8:05population. Then Joshua and the Israelites
- 8:09turned back and attacked Debba. He captured the town, its king,
- 8:14and all of its surrounding villages.
- 8:16He completely destroyed everyone in it, leaving no survivors.
- 8:20He did to Debba and its king just what he had done to Hebron
- 8:24and Libna and its king. So Joshua conquered the whole
- 8:28region, the kings and people of the Hill Country, the Negev, the
- 8:33western foothills and the mountain slopes.
- 8:37He completely destroyed everyone in the land, leaving no
- 8:40survivors. Just as the Lord, the God of
- 8:43Israel, had commanded, Joshua slaughtered them from Kadesh,
- 8:48Baniya to Gaza and from the region around the town of Goshen
- 8:53up to Gibeon. Joshua conquered all these kings
- 8:57and their land in a single campaign for the Lord.
- 9:01The God of Israel was fighting for his people.
- 9:05Then Joshua and the Israelite army return to their camp at
- 9:10Gilgal. Our Lord, we can often have the
- 9:21sense of you battling to get your way.
- 9:26You know that the forces of this world disrupt and push back, and
- 9:30then you take a bit and they take a bit.
- 9:32And while this sounds brutal to our modern ears, the author of
- 9:36the book of Joshua goes to great lengths to communicate that you
- 9:40are the Almighty God of the universe and nothing stands in
- 9:45your way. What I pray that we do not
- 9:48forget that you are supreme and you rule everything, and that
- 9:57when you and your will is bent on something, that is what will
- 10:02happen. And Lord, your will has been
- 10:06bent on saving your people, Your will is bent on restoring your
- 10:10creation to be the way you wanted it to be, that we would
- 10:15know you, that we would know your love, and that we would
- 10:18know who you are. And so you achieved this in
- 10:21giving us Jesus and conquering death and bringing us into your
- 10:26perfect and holy presence. Our Lord, we thank you for the
- 10:32love that you first gave us. We are so grateful and we love
- 10:37you back and we pray all of this in the loving name of Jesus,
- 10:42Amen.
