- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. It is good to be back with you. Lucas: We have covered a lot lately. We go from the kitchen to the market. Luna: To buy the things that make food taste amazing. The spices. Lucas: Right. Spices are everywhere in Swahili culture. Let us start with a basic question. Luna: What if I see something I do not know? How do I ask? Lucas: You say: Mchujio ni nini? Luna: Mchujio ni nini? Lucas: That means: What is this spice? Luna: Let me try again. Mchujio ni nini? Lucas: Perfect. Now imagine the seller tells you what it is. But you are not sure if you want a lot. Luna: I only need a little bit for my dish tonight. Lucas: Then you say: Ninataka mchujio kidogo. Luna: Ninataka mchujio kidogo. Lucas: This means: I want a little spice. Luna: It is so polite. Just a little. Ninataka mchujio kidogo. Lucas: Now let us look at quality. You pick up a bag of cloves. Luna: I smell them. They smell strong. Good. Lucas: You can tell the seller: Karuwa ni nzuri. Luna: Karuwa ni nzuri. Lucas: That means: This clove is good. Luna: I love saying that. Karuwa ni nzuri. Lucas: Okay. Now I have a problem. I forgot where I saw the chili powder. Luna: Oh no. Where is it? Lucas: You ask the seller: Pili pili iko wapi? Luna: Pili pili iko wapi? Lucas: This means: Where is the chili? Luna: It sounds like a rhyme. Pili pili iko wapi? Lucas: It does. And finally, you find everything. You want to pay. Luna: How do I ask for the item specifically? Lucas: You say: Tafadhali nipe karafuu. Luna: Tafadhali nipe karafuu. Lucas: This means: Please give me cloves. Luna: Tafadhali nipe karafuu. That was easy. Lucas: It is. Let us review them quickly. Mchujio ni nini? Luna: Mchujio ni nini? Lucas: Ninataka mchujio kidogo. Luna: Ninataka mchujio kidogo. Lucas: Karuwa ni nzuri.
