Straight, left, right — I've got those down. Lucas: That's great! But what happens if you get really lost or need urgent help? Today we're learning how to ask for assistance and handle emergencies in Cantonese. Luna: Ooh, that's important. I hope I never need it, but good to know. Lucas: Exactly. Let's start with the most urgent one. If you're in danger, you shout '救命'. Luna: 救命. Lucas: Yes! 救命. Means 'Help!' or 'Save my life!' — it's the emergency cry. Luna: 救命. I'll remember that. Sounds strong. Lucas: Now a more general one: '我需要幫助'. That's 'I need help'. Luna: 我需要幫助. Let me try: 我需要幫助. Lucas: Perfect. 幫助 means 'help', and 需要 means 'need'. Luna: So 我需要幫助 is 'I need help'. Got it. Lucas: Now if you want to ask someone if they can help you, say '你可唔可以幫我'. Luna: 你可唔可以幫我. That's a mouthful. 你可唔可以幫我. Lucas: You've got it. 可唔可以 is 'can or cannot', and 幫 means 'help'. So literally 'You can or cannot help me?'. Luna: Right. So 你可唔可以幫我 — 'Can you help me?'. Lucas: Yes. Now, if there's a crime or accident, you might need to say '報警' — 'call the police'. Luna: 報警. That's two characters: 報 and 警. Lucas: Exactly. And if you're lost, say '我蕩失路'. Luna: 我蕩失路. That sounds like 'I lost my way'. Lucas: Exactly. 蕩失路 means 'lost on the road'. So 'I am lost'. Luna: Let me practice them all. 救命. 我需要幫助. 你可唔可以幫我. 報警. 我蕩失路. Lucas: Wow, you nailed it! Let's do a quick scenario. Imagine you're in a mall and can't find the exit. Luna: Okay, I'd say: 唔該, 你可唔可以幫我? 我蕩失路. Lucas: Perfect! That's exactly right. Then the person might point you to the exit. Luna: And if I see something dangerous, I shout 救命! Lucas: Right. And call 報警 if needed. Luna: These are really useful. I feel a bit safer now. Lucas: You know, learning phrases like these reminds me that language is a tool that can really help people.
