- 0:27Our current series is A Guide on the
- 0:30Side, How to Have Joyful Spiritual Conversations at
- 0:33Work.
- 0:35Have you ever done any kind of partnered
- 0:37dancing, ballroom dancing, swing dancing, something like that?
- 0:42I did a little bit of swing dancing
- 0:43when I was in high school.
- 0:45I was in a music theater performance class
- 0:47where we learned how to do tap dancing,
- 0:49we learned how to do swing dancing, a
- 0:50few other things.
- 0:51And the thing about tap dancing was even
- 0:53though we were choreographed, we were each kind
- 0:55of in our own space, right?
- 0:56So you just had to learn the moves,
- 0:57you had to learn how to sync up
- 0:58your feet to the music in the right
- 1:00way, and that was all there was to
- 1:01it.
- 1:01You just, you either had it or you
- 1:02didn't.
- 1:04But with partner dancing, you didn't just have
- 1:06to know the moves and the music, you
- 1:08also had to know your partner.
- 1:09You had to have this kind of dynamic
- 1:11exchange where you know the moves or what
- 1:15the options of moves are, but so does
- 1:16your partner, and so you're both ready for
- 1:18each other, and then you're responding to each
- 1:20other in the moment in this wonderful, beautiful
- 1:22way, right?
- 1:23There's a reason that we think of dancing
- 1:25as this wonderful metaphor for human relationships, for
- 1:29marriage, for romance, for things like this.
- 1:31I think that dancing, partner dancing, is also
- 1:34a great metaphor for evangelism, because on the
- 1:37one hand, we need to know the moves,
- 1:38we need to know the rhythm, we need
- 1:40to know the good news itself.
- 1:42That's kind of our part that we bring,
- 1:44of just like knowing the good news of
- 1:45Jesus, having experienced it for ourselves.
- 1:47But then there's also this quality of responding
- 1:50to the other person, of gauging how open
- 1:53they are to the good news, of seeing
- 1:55what's going on for them and saying something
- 1:58that might be relevant to where they're at,
- 2:00of challenging them or inviting them to take
- 2:02their next step toward Jesus.
- 2:04And there's incredible joy and dynamism when you're
- 2:07in this exchange with somebody else, and it's
- 2:09genuine.
- 2:10When they're experiencing the goodness of God and
- 2:12beginning to see, oh, this is real.
- 2:15The kingdom of God is real.
- 2:16Maybe I could take a step towards it,
- 2:17maybe I could take a step into it.
- 2:19And to be in that dance of evangelism
- 2:21is just one of the most beautiful faith
- 2:23-building experiences that I've ever had as a
- 2:25disciple of Jesus.
- 2:26And if it's not something that you're familiar
- 2:29with, again, the whole point of this series
- 2:31is you can do it.
- 2:32You can learn the moves and you can
- 2:35learn how to be responsive to the person
- 2:37in front of you.
- 2:37So that's what I want to talk about
- 2:39in this episode, is how are we responsive
- 2:41to other people?
- 2:42We've already laid the groundwork, right?
- 2:43We talked about this in the past couple
- 2:45episodes.
- 2:46We're developing this attentive life where we're attentive
- 2:49to God, attentive to other people just kind
- 2:51of as a way of being in the
- 2:52world.
- 2:53And then we're also intentionally making our lives
- 2:57like a hospitable garden for spiritual conversations.
- 3:00We're thinking about how we bring our Christian
- 3:03and non-Christian friends together and we make
- 3:05it a space where these kind of conversations
- 3:07can happen.
- 3:08But then when it's time for a conversation,
- 3:11how do you actually get one started?
- 3:13How do you respond to somebody else who
- 3:15might have some curiosity about spiritual things?
- 3:19Well, I want to go to the scriptures
- 3:20and look at a couple things that can
- 3:23help us out.
- 3:24OK, then also look at a couple thinkers
- 3:26who can help us out, including, of course,
- 3:28Dallas Willard.
- 3:29OK, but first, before we go to the
- 3:31scripture, have you ever heard this phrase, preach
- 3:35the gospel at all times when necessary, use
- 3:38words?
- 3:39Sometimes it's attributed to St. Francis of Assisi.
- 3:41Sometimes it's attributed to others.
- 3:43And let me be honest, I think it
- 3:45is a terrible phrase.
- 3:47I think it's confusing.
- 3:49I don't think it's helpful to people because
- 3:51it's confusing two things that both matter, right?
- 3:54On the one hand, does it matter that
- 3:56we in our lives live out the reality
- 4:00of God at all times, regardless of whether
- 4:02we're explicitly having a spiritual conversation?
- 4:05Yes, that matters.
- 4:07On the other hand, does using words, in
- 4:11fact, also matter?
- 4:12Does proclaiming the good news matter?
- 4:15Yes, that matters.
- 4:16And there's an extent to which this quote
- 4:18in particular, this when necessary use words tends
- 4:21to minimize that.
- 4:23It's almost like a quote that gives permission
- 4:24for really what matters is living our lives
- 4:28a certain way and whether or not we
- 4:29ever get around to sharing the good news.
- 4:31You know, it may happen, it may not.
- 4:33And I just don't think that's what scripture
- 4:34offers for us.
- 4:36OK, but I want to be hospitable to
- 4:39the good part of that, which is scripture
- 4:41does speak to this dynamism of who we
- 4:44are, of the kind of life we're living.
- 4:45It is important.
- 4:47And it connects that to this kind of
- 4:50responsiveness that does, in fact, use words.
- 4:53OK, so let's go to a couple of
- 4:54different passages.
- 4:56One of my favorite verses in the entire
- 4:57Bible is Luke 8, verse 1.
- 5:01This is in the ESV.
- 5:03Soon afterward, Jesus went on through cities and
- 5:05villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of
- 5:09the kingdom of God.
- 5:11OK, this is a verse that gives us
- 5:13Jesus's MO.
- 5:14How did he do things?
- 5:15As he went through cities and villages, as
- 5:17he went from place to place, he proclaimed
- 5:20the good news of the kingdom of God.
- 5:22But it says proclaiming and bringing.
- 5:25He also brought the good news of the
- 5:27kingdom of God.
- 5:28In his ministry of healing, in his ministry
- 5:30of deliverance from evil spirits, wherever Jesus went,
- 5:33the kingdom of God happened.
- 5:36So Jesus was not just using words.
- 5:37He was also bringing the reality of God's
- 5:41kingdom with him wherever he went.
- 5:43And he was speaking about it.
- 5:44So for Jesus, there's not a contradiction here.
- 5:47There's action.
- 5:49There's invoking the power of God through his
- 5:52unique life, lived in the power of the
- 5:54Holy Spirit as the Messiah, as the Son
- 5:56of God.
- 5:57And there's proclaiming, saying, here's the kingdom of
- 6:00God.
- 6:01Enter into it.
- 6:02So Jesus, he did both.
- 6:04He had this life that was filled with
- 6:06the presence of God and brought the kingdom
- 6:09of God with him wherever he went.
- 6:10And he proclaimed the good news about that
- 6:14kingdom.
- 6:14So if we are disciples of Jesus, if
- 6:16we're learning from him, I think that our
- 6:18MO might be similar, where maybe there's a
- 6:22how we live dynamic, and then also a
- 6:24when we use words dynamic.
- 6:27Okay, let's go to another passage.
- 6:30Paul in Colossians.
- 6:33This is Colossians chapter four.
- 6:35It's kind of in the section of the
- 6:36letter where Paul's just giving kind of a
- 6:37lot of little tidbits of wisdom and application.
- 6:40He's already done the theological heavy lifting in
- 6:42earlier chapters.
- 6:44And this is what he says when he
- 6:46gets to a little bit of input about
- 6:48relationships with people who may not be connected
- 6:50to God through Jesus Christ.
- 6:52This is verse five.
- 6:54Be wise in the way you act toward
- 6:56outsiders.
- 6:57Make the most of every opportunity.
- 7:00Let your conversation always be full of grace,
- 7:03seasoned with salt, so that you may know
- 7:05how to answer everyone.
- 7:08Oh, did you catch this kind of two
- 7:10sides to that?
- 7:12On the one hand, there's a kind of
- 7:14taking initiative that Paul gets at there, right?
- 7:17He says, be wise in the way you
- 7:18act toward outsiders, make the most of every
- 7:20opportunity.
- 7:21So that sounds pretty active.
- 7:23That sounds like, oh, I'm looking for opportunities
- 7:26and I'm asking, is this an opportunity?
- 7:28Is this something that I can take advantage
- 7:30of right now?
- 7:31Okay, but then what are you actually doing,
- 7:34right?
- 7:34What's the verb, right?
- 7:36When it talks about conversations, it says, let
- 7:38your conversation always be full of grace, seasoned
- 7:40with salt, so that you may know how
- 7:41to, what?
- 7:43So that you may know how to answer
- 7:45everyone.
- 7:46Now that's a responsive word.
- 7:48If you're answering someone, it implies that they
- 7:50have already asked a question, that they've already
- 7:52shown a certain level of curiosity.
- 7:55So putting these two things together, I think
- 7:57the phrase we could use is Paul is
- 7:59recommending a posture of responsive initiative.
- 8:03Responsive initiative.
- 8:05We're responding to other people.
- 8:06We're ready to answer them, which implies they
- 8:08already show some curiosity, a certain level of
- 8:10openness.
- 8:11And yet we're also looking for opportunities.
- 8:12We're looking, is this a chance?
- 8:14Is this a chance for me to be
- 8:16wise in the way I interact towards outsiders?
- 8:19Is this a chance for me to, like
- 8:21Jesus, proclaim something about the kingdom of God?
- 8:25Okay, let's go to a different epistle and
- 8:27a different apostle.
- 8:28Peter, 1 Peter 3, 15 through 16.
- 8:32Let's see if we find responsive initiative here
- 8:34too.
- 8:36But in your hearts, revere Christ as Lord.
- 8:38Always be prepared to give an answer to
- 8:40everyone who asks you to give the reason
- 8:41for the hope that you have.
- 8:43But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping
- 8:45a clear conscience, so that those who speak
- 8:47maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may
- 8:50be ashamed of their slander.
- 8:52Oh, okay.
- 8:52Couple things going on there.
- 8:54Did you catch the responsive attitude, right?
- 8:56Always be prepared to what?
- 8:58To give an answer to everyone who asks
- 9:01you to give the reason for the hope
- 9:03that you have.
- 9:04Again, there's this assumption.
- 9:06People are going to be asking.
- 9:08Okay.
- 9:08And so when people ask, then you are
- 9:10ready to respond.
- 9:13But also Peter connects it to your whole
- 9:15way of life, right?
- 9:16He says, keeping a clear conscience so that
- 9:19those who speak maliciously against your good behavior
- 9:21in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.
- 9:23Peter saying there's something about your whole way
- 9:25of life here.
- 9:27That's relevant to these conversations.
- 9:29Okay.
- 9:30Dallas Willard, I think is really helpful in
- 9:32unpacking this.
- 9:33This is from his wonderful book, The Allure
- 9:35of Gentleness, Defending the Faith in the Manner
- 9:38of Jesus.
- 9:40And he's talking about this specific passage.
- 9:43And he says, we need to understand that
- 9:47the ministry of apologetics is a ministry directed
- 9:50to all people, wherever they may be located,
- 9:54whether they call themselves Christians or not, because
- 9:57these ideas that sit in our heads have
- 10:00us at their mercy.
- 10:01When we come to live our lives as
- 10:03Christians, we must be open to anyone who
- 10:06says, as this passage indicates, why are you
- 10:09hopeful?
- 10:10What's going on in you?
- 10:11Because something is obviously different.
- 10:14And then in that context, we exercise the
- 10:17ministry of apologetics.
- 10:20Okay.
- 10:21Dallas is using this term apologetics, which is
- 10:23more specific than just evangelism proper.
- 10:26It's this idea of giving a reason for
- 10:29the faith that you have, kind of explaining,
- 10:30here's why my faith makes sense to me.
- 10:33But Dallas is saying that this particular ministry
- 10:35of explaining why your faith makes sense, it's
- 10:37relevant to everyone because everybody's ideas affect their
- 10:42life in really profound ways, right?
- 10:44He says, the ideas that sit in our
- 10:45heads have us at their mercy.
- 10:46That's true for all of us as human
- 10:48beings.
- 10:49But he says, when you live your life
- 10:51as a Christian, right, somebody's going to say,
- 10:54why are you hopeful?
- 10:56What's going on in you?
- 10:57Because something is obviously different.
- 11:00So that's what's going to give the occasion
- 11:02to have this conversation about apologetics, is your
- 11:05way of life as a Christian.
- 11:08So Dallas goes on to say, if you
- 11:10do not exhibit the presence of a life
- 11:12that is above this world, something that is
- 11:15coming into you and giving you joy, peace,
- 11:17and strength in a situation that looks very
- 11:20bad from the outside, there isn't going to
- 11:22be anything for people to ask about.
- 11:25Ooh, ooh.
- 11:26Okay.
- 11:27How often is that true of my life
- 11:29in Jesus?
- 11:29That my life is not so different from
- 11:32anybody else's life, such that there isn't anything
- 11:34for others to ask about.
- 11:36And what Dallas is suggesting is that there
- 11:38is actually a qualitative difference in the way
- 11:41that we live our lives in general that
- 11:44can inspire curiosity in other people.
- 11:46Now, that is a high standard.
- 11:48But again, that's actually a really healthy way
- 11:51to think about evangelism, to think about apologetics,
- 11:53to think about sharing our faith is, are
- 11:55we experiencing the good news for ourselves, right?
- 11:59Are we attending to God as we seek
- 12:01to attend to others?
- 12:02Are we experiencing the transformative joy of the
- 12:04power of the Holy Spirit in our lives?
- 12:06If not, okay, let's go there.
- 12:08Let's learn the good news for ourselves.
- 12:10And then maybe we'll have something to share
- 12:12with someone else.
- 12:14Along similar lines, Dallas Willard famously once had
- 12:18a conversation with Pastor John Ortberg, where John
- 12:21Ortberg was kind of asking about, you know,
- 12:23what's most important in life with God.
- 12:25And Dallas said, you must arrange your days
- 12:29so that you are experiencing total contentment, joy,
- 12:33and confidence in your everyday life with God.
- 12:37You must arrange your days so that you
- 12:40are experiencing total contentment, joy, and confidence in
- 12:43your everyday life with God.
- 12:48Now that's a whole nother series that we
- 12:50could lean into.
- 12:51How do you do that?
- 12:52How do you arrange your life that way?
- 12:53But that's gonna be so much more powerful
- 12:56than any kind of technique when it comes
- 12:58to evangelism, right?
- 12:59If you're not really in touch with the
- 13:01power of the Holy Spirit to help you
- 13:03grow in the fruit of the Spirit, and
- 13:04then you just try and be dutiful as
- 13:06an evangelist, how fruitful is that gonna be?
- 13:08Versus if you are experiencing the joy of
- 13:10God on a day-to-day basis, as
- 13:12you grow in grace by the power of
- 13:15the Holy Spirit, then whatever evangelism you have
- 13:18to do will probably have some kind of
- 13:20effect on people, right?
- 13:21So that's the good interpretation of what I
- 13:27think the unhelpful quote, always preach the good
- 13:30news when necessary use words, right?
- 13:32There is a reality where the life that
- 13:34we're living all the time is superbly relevant
- 13:37to these kinds of conversations.
- 13:40It is in fact, in some sense, the
- 13:41foundation for these kinds of conversations, the predecessor
- 13:44to these kinds of conversations.
- 13:46And yet that doesn't mean that we never
- 13:48get around to having those conversations.
- 13:51Other people may be curious and ask us
- 13:55a question, and then we wanna be ready
- 13:57to make the most of every opportunity.
- 13:59Again, responsive initiative.
- 14:02Okay, in future episodes, we're gonna unpack this
- 14:05a lot more, but I just wanna kind
- 14:07of give a couple other thoughts here.
- 14:10Here I'm drawing on the work of intervarsity
- 14:13leaders, Don Everts and Doug Schaup from their
- 14:16book, I Once Was Lost.
- 14:18I've used that book a couple of times
- 14:20before, and we'll reference it again in this
- 14:23series.
- 14:23But they talk about this kind of moment
- 14:25of curiosity.
- 14:26Somebody has some curiosity about spiritual things.
- 14:28They're already friends with you, and then maybe
- 14:30something happens.
- 14:32So they say, just because someone trusts you,
- 14:36it doesn't necessarily follow that they are super
- 14:38curious about Jesus.
- 14:40In fact, many non-Christians are content to
- 14:42have a Christian friend or two, but never
- 14:44get any closer to the kingdom.
- 14:47Hmm, interesting.
- 14:48Okay, so that's the first thing, is that
- 14:50this curiosity may not be automatic.
- 14:53There may be ways that we can actually
- 14:54provoke this curiosity.
- 14:56Okay, but then here's the other thing.
- 14:58When this curiosity shows up, we don't wanna
- 15:00be overzealous, right?
- 15:02Again, using the swing dancing metaphor.
- 15:03You don't wanna throw your partner across the
- 15:06dance floor in a way that they were
- 15:07not ready for.
- 15:09So this is, I think, so helpful.
- 15:11They call this dousing curiosity.
- 15:15As we have conversations with curious people, we
- 15:18should be sensitive to what level of interest
- 15:20they actually have.
- 15:22Tuvia Zaretsky, a friend who works with Jews
- 15:25for Jesus, asks a great question.
- 15:27Would you pour out a whole pitcher of
- 15:29water if all they are holding is a
- 15:30little Dixie cup?
- 15:31No, you would only pour out a few
- 15:33ounces.
- 15:34Tuvia's right.
- 15:35We need to give people what they ask
- 15:37for, instead of pouring out everything we know
- 15:39about God the first time they display a
- 15:41Dixie cup's worth of curiosity.
- 15:44If they have just a thimble full of
- 15:46curiosity, we could actually douse that small curiosity
- 15:50by answering their small, limited question with 101
- 15:53apologetic answers we've been waiting to use on
- 15:55someone.
- 15:56Try not to dump five gallons of answers
- 15:58on a six ounce question.
- 16:00Try to assess your friend's curiosity and respond
- 16:02in kind.
- 16:04This approach is much more likely to result
- 16:05in the growth of their curiosity over time.
- 16:10You get that?
- 16:11Can you feel the rhythm there?
- 16:13You're hearing the music of the Holy Spirit
- 16:15in somebody else's life and you're seeing how
- 16:17curious they are, how open they are, and
- 16:19then you're not dumping the five gallon bucket
- 16:21on them.
- 16:21You're responding in kind.
- 16:23You're staying in step with them and with
- 16:25the Holy Spirit by sharing what they're open
- 16:28to in that moment.
- 16:29Just a thimble full if that's all that
- 16:31they're open to.
- 16:33Okay, so I think this is kind of
- 16:35the groundwork, this posture of responsive initiative.
- 16:39We're looking for opportunities.
- 16:41We're arranging our lives so we can have
- 16:42these kinds of opportunities come up.
- 16:44And then when someone's curious, we're responding with
- 16:48the level that's appropriate for their level of
- 16:52curiosity.
- 16:53And then we go from there.
- 16:57Lord Jesus, thank you that you showed responsive
- 17:00initiative, that you could challenge people, but you
- 17:03could also winsomely invite people into the kingdom.
- 17:08And we ask that you would do that
- 17:09through us, that you would show us how
- 17:10to make the most of every opportunity, how
- 17:13to be ready to answer, to respond to
- 17:15others as they show genuine curiosity.
- 17:19Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 17:21do our work with you.
