- 0:01How do we determine whether there is any such thing as a
- 0:04yoga force? Some treat it as a form of self
- 0:08delusion, some as hypnotic suggestion, some as some form of
- 0:13placebo effect of the mind, some as simply the action of other
- 0:18forces that we simply define as yoga force without any objective
- 0:23method of distinguishing such a force from other forces active
- 0:28in our world and in our awareness.
- 0:31If we apply the scientific method to this question, we find
- 0:35that we need to have a way to eliminate other potential causes
- 0:39of what takes place when we are considering forces that are de
- 0:43facto invisible to our senses. We also need to look at our
- 0:47method of knowing and determine the proper method to assure
- 0:51ourselves of the validity of our interpretation of the forces at
- 0:55work. Scientists are used to working
- 0:59with unseen forces and finding ways to distinguish, measure and
- 1:03harness them. Experiments are designed to
- 1:06begin to limit the number of possible causes of an event or
- 1:11action and eventually they can isolate what is taking place.
- 1:17This happens frequently in the field of medicine where very
- 1:20complex interactions take place to cause symptoms an individual
- 1:24is experiencing. Much emphasis is also placed on
- 1:29the instruments of knowing. How do we know?
- 1:31The instruments are calibrated properly and able to measure and
- 1:35record what is taking place in the field of consciousness?
- 1:40It soon becomes clear that the emotional being and the mental
- 1:44being are not competent judges, so anything they experience must
- 1:49be subjected to further scrutiny.
- 1:53This brings us to the types of knowing, with the ultimate type
- 1:57being knowledge by identity as described by Sri Aurobindo in
- 2:01The Life Divine. Knowledge by identity requires
- 2:06the development of an inner receptivity and a systematic
- 2:10approach to the inner experience relying on a form of intuition
- 2:15or soul sense that can develop through patient and persistent
- 2:20efforts. As we begin to utilize the inner
- 2:24and the outer methods of knowledge, we can review those
- 2:27things in our lives that remain inexplicable based on the normal
- 2:32factors we take into account in our external world and view of
- 2:35existence. For example, if an individual
- 2:39has an out of body experience, sees his body from another
- 2:44station outside, and then returns to the body and resumes
- 2:48conscious awareness in the body, we learn a lot about the nature
- 2:52of consciousness that defies our preconceived notions about who
- 2:57and what we are. Such experiences are frequent,
- 3:01and generally the individual can describe in precise detail the
- 3:05circumstances, the actions of others in the room, the details
- 3:10of which his physical senses are not in a position to pick up.
- 3:15Other fields of inquiry that may bear fruit include the review of
- 3:20the power of intuition as well as the creation of a palpable
- 3:25atmosphere, the effect of mantric energy, and healing
- 3:29through application of spiritual force.
- 3:33Similarly, there is an entire range of experiences that defy
- 3:38our mental ideas about existence and consciousness, and a close
- 3:42exploration of these experiences can help us sift through what is
- 3:47actually occurring. Just as scientists had to work
- 3:51to understand the action of electricity, of radiation, of
- 3:56gravity, and had to devise experiments, detail their
- 4:00observations, make hypotheses and test them through a vast
- 4:05number of trials, and then begin to apply the knowledge so gain
- 4:09to practical technological actions, so an exploration of
- 4:14our spiritual capacities and the action of a yoga force will
- 4:19yield results that will be incontrovertible as to their
- 4:22source, their power and their significance, Sri or Bindo
- 4:28writes quote. Still, the yoga force is always
- 4:33tangible and concrete in the way I have described, and has
- 4:36tangible results, but it is invisible, not like a blow given
- 4:41or the rush of a motor car knocking somebody down, which
- 4:45the physical senses can at once perceive.
- 4:48How is the mere physical mind to know that it is there and
- 4:51working by its results? But how can it know that the
- 4:56results were that of the yogic force and not of something else?
- 5:00One of two things it must be either.
- 5:03It must allow the consciousness to go inside, to become aware of
- 5:07inner things, to believe in the experience of the invisible and
- 5:12the Super physical. And then by experience, by the
- 5:16opening of new capacities, it becomes conscious of these
- 5:20forces and can see, follow and use their workings, just as the
- 5:25scientist uses the unseen forces of nature.
- 5:29Or one must have faith and watch and open oneself, and then it
- 5:35will begin to see how things happen.
- 5:37It will notice that when the force was called in, there began
- 5:41after a time to be a result. Then repetitions, more
- 5:46repetitions, more clear and tangible results, increasing
- 5:50frequency, increasing consistency of results of
- 5:54feeling and awareness of the force at work until the
- 5:58experience becomes daily, regular, normal, complete.
- 6:04These are the two main methods, one internal working from in
- 6:08outward, the other external working from outside and calling
- 6:13the inner force out till it penetrates and is visible in the
- 6:17exterior consciousness. But neither can be done if one
- 6:22insists always on the extrovert attitude, the external concrete
- 6:26only, and refuses to join to it the internal concrete, or if the
- 6:33physical mind at every step raises a dance of doubts which
- 6:37refuses to allow the nascent experience to develop.
- 6:42Even the scientist carrying on a new experiment would never
- 6:46succeed if he allowed his mind to behave that way.
