- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:13Our current series is Gentle Witnesses, sharing the
- 0:16good news at work in a way that
- 0:18actually makes sense.
- 0:19And we're going through what's called the Five
- 0:21Thresholds, a paradigm from InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, and
- 0:24a couple evangelists named Doug, Shaupe, and Don
- 0:27Everts.
- 0:27And today, we get to the second of
- 0:29the five thresholds, Becoming Curious.
- 0:38So in the last couple episodes, we talked
- 0:40about the first threshold, trusting a Christian friend.
- 0:43The next step that people often take on
- 0:45a journey towards faith in Jesus is Becoming
- 0:47Curious.
- 0:48But Becoming Curious does not automatically follow from
- 0:51trusting a Christian friend.
- 0:53So Doug and Don lay it out like
- 0:54this in their book, I Once Was Lost.
- 0:57Just because someone trusts you, it doesn't necessarily
- 1:00follow that they are super curious about Jesus.
- 1:03In fact, many non-Christians are content to
- 1:05have a Christian friend or two, but never
- 1:06get any closer to the kingdom.
- 1:08After coming to trust a Christian, they face
- 1:10a whole new threshold.
- 1:11The process of moving from complacent about Jesus
- 1:13to curious about him is the second major
- 1:16threshold our friends have told us they went
- 1:18through on their way to faith.
- 1:20To go from being complacent about spiritual things
- 1:22to being intrigued is a natural process.
- 1:24Our souls and our minds are built by
- 1:26God to be curious, to ask questions until
- 1:29we have landed upon satisfying answers.
- 1:32So this move from complacent to curious isn't
- 1:33easy.
- 1:34Complacency is easier, of course.
- 1:36But it taps into a desire and need
- 1:38that is wired into all people.
- 1:40Before crossing the threshold, our lost friends may
- 1:42seem apathetic.
- 1:44Most folks don't go from being spiritually complacent
- 1:47to bursting with curiosity overnight.
- 1:50Curiosity tends to blossom over time.
- 1:53So this is something that I found true
- 1:56in my own relationships with people from all
- 1:58different religious backgrounds.
- 2:00People are not necessarily antagonistic towards Christians.
- 2:03We talked about how some people will have
- 2:05a knee-jerk reaction of distrust towards Christians.
- 2:07But even if they don't, if they're not
- 2:08necessarily antagonistic or distrustful, that doesn't mean that
- 2:11they have a passionate interest in Christianity or
- 2:15an intense curiosity about the person of Jesus.
- 2:17A lot of people are just kind of
- 2:18like doing life, moving along.
- 2:21They might have some awareness of Jesus.
- 2:23They might have some Christian friends.
- 2:24They might even have some Christian background themselves.
- 2:26But it's just not a big question.
- 2:27It's not their driving concern at any given
- 2:29moment.
- 2:30So the question is, how can we come
- 2:32alongside people and help gently provoke curiosity?
- 2:37Okay, now, I want to be nuanced here.
- 2:40We could get anxious.
- 2:41We could think, oh my gosh, I've got
- 2:43to somehow make all my friends curious about
- 2:45Jesus.
- 2:46What can I do?
- 2:46And we can tie ourselves up in knots.
- 2:48And again, remember, anxiety does not come from
- 2:50Jesus.
- 2:50Jesus is teaching Matthew 6.34, do not
- 2:54be anxious about anything.
- 2:55Do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow
- 2:57will be anxious for itself.
- 2:59Each day has enough trouble of its own.
- 3:01If you're feeling a lot of anxiety about
- 3:03sharing the good news, that's not coming from
- 3:05the Lord.
- 3:05That's not the right paradigm for it.
- 3:08And we see this in Jesus's own approach
- 3:10to people who wanted to become his followers
- 3:12in the Gospels.
- 3:13Jesus was not anxious to have more followers.
- 3:16Sometimes he would even turn people away.
- 3:18So, we see this, for example, in the
- 3:19Gospel of Luke, chapter 9 and verse 57.
- 3:25As they were going along the road, someone
- 3:26said to Jesus, I will follow you wherever
- 3:28you go.
- 3:29And Jesus said to him, foxes have holes
- 3:31and birds of the air have nests, but
- 3:33the son of man has nowhere to lay
- 3:34his head.
- 3:36Jesus is basically saying, are you sure you
- 3:38want to follow me wherever I go?
- 3:39Because I go some uncomfortable places.
- 3:41I'm an itinerant.
- 3:42I don't always have a nice cushy spot
- 3:44to land at night.
- 3:45Sometimes I have nowhere to lay my head.
- 3:46Jesus is grappling or encouraging this person to
- 3:50grapple with what it really means to follow
- 3:51Jesus.
- 3:52So Jesus is not somehow tied up in
- 3:54knots, anxious to get the person to say
- 3:56yes to him.
- 3:57He's not anxiously getting the person to grapple
- 4:00with what it really means to follow him.
- 4:03So similarly, in our friendships, we don't need
- 4:04to be tied up in knots about how
- 4:06do we get people to be curious about
- 4:07Jesus?
- 4:08We can gently provoke curiosity by being curious
- 4:12ourselves.
- 4:13We can be curious about what our friends
- 4:14believe, what they think about important topics, and
- 4:17they may reciprocate and also be curious, well,
- 4:19what do you think about that?
- 4:21So again, it's always practicing what we preach.
- 4:24We're curious and that may be provoking curiosity
- 4:26from others as well.
- 4:29But I also find it's helpful to be
- 4:31intentional.
- 4:32Again, we don't have a specific command in
- 4:34scripture that says go around provoking curiosity about
- 4:37the kingdom of God.
- 4:38But we do see examples of people being
- 4:41ready to speak about the kingdom of God
- 4:43to people who are curious.
- 4:45And so I think that we can think
- 4:47about opportunities to provoke curiosity, not necessarily as
- 4:50a command of scripture, but as a way
- 4:52to love people.
- 4:53If people often cross a certain threshold once
- 4:56they are curious, helping them become curious is
- 4:59a way to gently nudge them in that
- 5:01direction.
- 5:02So one way to do this is by
- 5:04asking questions that open up people's faith stories.
- 5:08So just learning how to ask these questions
- 5:10in a natural, organic way is super helpful.
- 5:12So one question that I use sometimes is,
- 5:15did you have any kind of faith background
- 5:16growing up?
- 5:17Just ask it neutrally.
- 5:18I'm not saying that they should have had
- 5:20that background.
- 5:21I'm just I'm curious.
- 5:22And sometimes people be like, yeah, I went
- 5:23to Lutheran school for a while.
- 5:24Or they'll be like, not really.
- 5:25It wasn't a thing in our family.
- 5:26And then I have a follow up question.
- 5:28What does that mean for you today?
- 5:29Or where are you at today with those
- 5:30things?
- 5:31And it's fascinating if you just ask that
- 5:33open ended question.
- 5:34Where are you at today with those things?
- 5:36Sometimes people are so ready to share.
- 5:38Sometimes people are like, let me tell you,
- 5:40here is why I don't go to church
- 5:42anymore.
- 5:42Or let me tell you, I had this
- 5:43one relationship in college with this one roommate
- 5:45that was really interesting.
- 5:46And I started going to Bible study, but
- 5:47then I didn't.
- 5:47You know, people are just willing to share.
- 5:50Sometimes people that I don't even know that
- 5:51well will just open up if I ask
- 5:53that question, that kind of neutral, open ended
- 5:55way.
- 5:55Did you have any kind of faith background
- 5:56growing up?
- 5:58Where are you at with those things today?
- 6:00So think about what's a question like that
- 6:02that you could use to provoke curiosity?
- 6:05Kind of similar questions would be something like,
- 6:08do you have any kind of faith commitment
- 6:09or what's your spiritual story?
- 6:12You know, you got to figure out what
- 6:13makes sense for you to ask.
- 6:15Don and Doug in their book, they have
- 6:16a list of questions like this that can
- 6:18help provoke curiosity.
- 6:19So I just want to read some of
- 6:21their examples.
- 6:23Have you ever had a spiritual experience?
- 6:25Would you like to have a spiritual experience?
- 6:27Have you ever felt like you received a
- 6:29sign from God?
- 6:30What would you do if God gave you
- 6:31a sign?
- 6:32What is your take on this whole God
- 6:34question?
- 6:34What do you think God is like?
- 6:36Why does so many people hide behind religion?
- 6:38What do you think is wrong with Christians
- 6:39today?
- 6:40What do you think life is about?
- 6:42Do you think you have a destiny?
- 6:44Do you think that people are more spiritually
- 6:45interested today than they were five years ago?
- 6:48What's the most significant thing that has happened
- 6:50to you in the last month?
- 6:52The thing that all these questions have in
- 6:54common is they show curiosity.
- 6:56We're being curious and we're kind of provoking
- 6:59curiosity from the other person, somebody being willing
- 7:02to explore certain questions.
- 7:03What do they really think about faith?
- 7:05What do they really think about God?
- 7:06What do they think about Christians or about
- 7:08Jesus?
- 7:08But we're doing it in an open-ended
- 7:10way.
- 7:10We're not trying to maneuver somebody into some
- 7:12specific response.
- 7:13We're trying to tune into what's really going
- 7:15on with them.
- 7:17So that's how you can provoke curiosity.
- 7:20And that can go to all sorts of
- 7:21wonderful places in your relationships and conversations with
- 7:24people.
- 7:25It's easier than you might think to get
- 7:26those conversations started.
- 7:29One thing, though, that's really important here is
- 7:31to not confuse curiosity with deep personal openness.
- 7:34So we're actually about to get to the
- 7:36next threshold, threshold number three, which is openness.
- 7:40But curiosity is different.
- 7:41Sometimes curiosity is more of an intellectual exercise
- 7:43and it's not really that deep personal grappling
- 7:46with could this be true for me.
- 7:47This is another note from the book.
- 7:49It's important to remember here that even when
- 7:51someone's curiosity grows very strong, this does not
- 7:54mean that they are open to actual change
- 7:56in their life or are truly seeking for
- 7:58answers and conclusions.
- 7:59They are simply investigating and allowing themselves to
- 8:02hear new ideas.
- 8:02They are curious, which is wonderful.
- 8:05A common mistake, though, is for Christians to
- 8:07mistake someone's curiosity for either genuine openness or
- 8:10seeking.
- 8:11While moving from complacent to curious, people often
- 8:13investigate Jesus and his teachings and they can
- 8:16ask quite provocative questions.
- 8:18For all intents and purposes, they appear quite
- 8:19interested in their heart of hearts, however, they
- 8:21are not yet planning on making any real
- 8:23changes in their life.
- 8:25Curiosity should be celebrated as a step forward,
- 8:27not mistaken for something that it's not.
- 8:31So that's just a kind of a sidebar
- 8:33nuance here that we want to provoke curiosity,
- 8:36but we don't want to mistake someone being
- 8:38curious for something that is more than it
- 8:40is.
- 8:41If we mistake someone as being deeply open,
- 8:43pursuing Jesus, just because they're being intellectually curious,
- 8:46we might overload them.
- 8:48And we want to just give as much
- 8:49in response to somebody as they're ready for.
- 8:52Right?
- 8:52So if somebody shows a little bit of
- 8:54curiosity, we can give them a little bit
- 8:55of an answer, somebody shows a lot of
- 8:57curiosity, we can give them a little bit
- 8:59more of an answer, but we want to
- 9:00kind of gauge where people are at.
- 9:03A metaphor that comes up in the book
- 9:04is if you've got a little Dixie cup,
- 9:06you shouldn't try and pour a gallon of
- 9:08water into it.
- 9:09So somebody has a Dixie cups worth of
- 9:11curiosity, only give them a Dixie cups worth
- 9:13of water.
- 9:14That's all they're really open to at the
- 9:15moment.
- 9:17And as you keep doing that over time,
- 9:19that will, back to the first threshold, build
- 9:21more trust that they'll see you're not trying
- 9:23to force something, you're not trying to maneuver
- 9:24something, you're just keeping pace with them.
- 9:26And you may see that they become more
- 9:28and more curious over time, and maybe even
- 9:30take a step towards more personal openness.
- 9:35Lord Jesus, help us to stay curious, help
- 9:37us to be curious about our friends.
- 9:40Thank you that you found us.
- 9:42Even when we were complacent, you brought us
- 9:45into investigating and knowing you, and help us
- 9:48to believe that that's really possible for our
- 9:50friends and our coworkers to experience as well.
- 9:53Do your work in us as we do
- 9:54our work with you.
- 10:01Thanks for listening.
