- 0:00Hello, welcome back to Scripture Central.
- 0:02I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson and this is John W Welch.
- 0:05We are so excited to finish up the book of second Nephi.
- 0:09These are some of the most beautiful chapters in all
- 0:12scriptures. Second Nephi chapter 31 to 33.
- 0:16They describe the plan of salvation like no other chapters
- 0:20do. They describe the Atonement of
- 0:22Jesus Christ. They describe the doctrine of
- 0:25Christ, and Jack and I are thrilled to be able to talk
- 0:29about him together. It is so good.
- 0:31And what we get here, of course, is Nephi's farewell.
- 0:35It's his final last word. And they are so power.
- 0:39And you see little tidbits of the rest of all of his writings
- 0:42here, now synthesized together. That's right.
- 0:45He's brought it all together, helped us to see what he sees,
- 0:49his mission, his life having amounted to.
- 0:52And it's such a powerful conclusion that many of the Book
- 0:56of Mormon writers will pick up on this as a kind of pattern all
- 1:01the way till the end with Moroni.
- 1:07So let's start chapter 31. He begins in verse 2, giving the
- 1:13prophecy of what the doctrine of Christ is.
- 1:15And five times in these three little chapters, he repeats the
- 1:19idea that we have to follow, repent, be baptized, and receive
- 1:24the Spirit. And it's beautiful consistency
- 1:28that he does. And I think because of the
- 1:30Hebraic nature of ancient writing, this repetition is done
- 1:34very carefully for a purpose. That's right.
- 1:38And he wants us to recognize that this is the doctrine, the
- 1:44teaching of Christ. There's the plan of salvation,
- 1:49but this doctrine focuses on some particular points and it's
- 1:55interesting that Nephi will describe this and Jacob will
- 1:59speak of it as the doctrine of Christ coming when Jesus is
- 2:03actually there. In 3rd Nephi Chapter 11, he will
- 2:08say 9 times. This is my doctrine.
- 2:11Oh, I love. It so we have the first person
- 2:14fulfillment of those teachings and I'm.
- 2:19So glad you mentioned that. And the teachings like you say
- 2:23are basic for what Jesus says in 3rd Nephi 11.
- 2:29It's faith, repentance, baptism, the gift of the Holy Ghost and
- 2:34enduring to the end. But what Jesus does in 3rd Nephi
- 2:38is synthesize and give us a very straightforward, simple,
- 2:43understandable explanation which brings together what Nephi gives
- 2:49a greater elaboration on. Here, yeah, in these chapters.
- 2:53Now, later, Jesus will also talk about my gospel when he's
- 2:58speaking to the disciples, and I think when he's talking about
- 3:01the gospel, this is my gospel. It's more what we would call the
- 3:05plan of salvation. It's a broader explanation of
- 3:10more how things were revealed and what was happening and what
- 3:16how we interact with and what we do as a result of these things.
- 3:21So Jesus gives the gospel a word of blessing and a word of
- 3:26promise. So there's a minor distinction.
- 3:29Some people wonder what's the difference between the doctrine
- 3:32of Christ and the gospel of Christ.
- 3:33Not much. They both.
- 3:35Are basically the same thing, but a little more focused here
- 3:39with the doctrine, and it's the word that Nephi chooses to use.
- 3:43As we see this repetition of these five points over and over
- 3:48again, sometimes it gets obnoxious.
- 3:50Sort of repetitive and hurry up, let's get to a new point.
- 3:54But I just hope that we can distill these messages slowly.
- 3:58I like reading scripture slowly and think, why is he doing this
- 4:02and how can I see a deeper level?
- 4:06Because as he refers to in verse three, my soul delighteth in
- 4:10plainness. I'm fascinated with the fact
- 4:13that let's not cut short this idea that because it there is
- 4:17simplicity, there is not also depth, and it's difficult and
- 4:21it's and it's very. Important.
- 4:23I think that's right. And I wonder if you think back
- 4:27to what Nephi has given us so far in second Nephi.
- 4:32It's pretty deep, heavy stuff. He's given us Lehi's words and
- 4:37then he gives us a lot of Isaiah and you get to the end of
- 4:43Nephi's chapters that we've talked about last week in his
- 4:49explanations of what he makes of those Isaiah materials.
- 4:54And I'll bet somebody said to him, you know, Nephi, that's
- 4:57pretty complicated stuff. And it's true.
- 5:01What what he's given in second Nephi so far has has been
- 5:06daunting. But this is very clear.
- 5:09And he makes a point of it. I really do like plainness.
- 5:14So here he's plain. Yes, and I love the earlier
- 5:17thought that Nephi refers to plain and precious.
- 5:22And where does he use that phrase first?
- 5:24I. Don't know.
- 5:25Well, it's in first Nephi 13, when he's talking about the
- 5:29plain and precious things that will be taken away.
- 5:32And he sees that vision of things being taken out of the
- 5:34Bible. That's right.
- 5:36And so is the doctrine of Christ, perhaps removed from the
- 5:39Old Testament. And to some extent also from the
- 5:42New Testament. But what he is saying is, if you
- 5:46now have the plain and precious simplicity of these five points,
- 5:54then all the rest will make sense.
- 5:56And he rejoices in that to bring that back to us, because in a
- 6:01lot of ways things get taken away from the gospel when we try
- 6:05to complicate it, and things get murky and muddy.
- 6:09And he says, I want it to be plain and precious.
- 6:16And if you value each one of these plain points and not
- 6:21dismiss them as being maybe elementary, but realize that
- 6:26they are actually foundational. I also feel like these chapters
- 6:31are for committed members of the Church who have already gone
- 6:34through these steps because he says in verse 5 the Lamb of God
- 6:39was holy and he didn't need to be baptized for repentance.
- 6:43He did it to fulfill all righteousness.
- 6:46And so as we go through these steps, looking at it from that
- 6:49perspective, we have to be humble.
- 6:52He says in verse 7 and receive the Holy Ghost in verse 8.
- 6:56But in verse nine, he says it's going to be straight path and
- 7:00difficult. Not straight line, but the
- 7:04Straits of Gibraltar, difficult, challenging, narrow.
- 7:08You know, the way of the Lord is not an easy home run.
- 7:12It is a challenge and you're going to need to have the spirit
- 7:16to get through it. You know, that's an excellent
- 7:18point. We don't want to, to
- 7:20oversimplify in the fourth article of faith, Of course we
- 7:23have faith, repentance, baptism, and the gift of the Holy Ghost.
- 7:27But what we get here, as you're pointing out, is Nephi's
- 7:31explanation to faithful members of the Church.
- 7:35What each of these different principles, these foundational
- 7:40doctrines of the gospel, what they mean to us and apply in
- 7:47every part of our lives. So it's an enriching explanation
- 7:52of of those basic principles, but without getting bogged down
- 7:58in complicated speculation or theological wandering, it's very
- 8:06clear and authoritative. Now we might want to also take a
- 8:12a a little more time on verse 10.
- 8:16He wants us all to realize the straightness of the path, and
- 8:21it's a path. It's a way.
- 8:23I think that the narrowness of the way means that you can't go
- 8:28with a mob, you can't go with the big group.
- 8:31Maybe you can go with a family or a small group.
- 8:34Maybe you have to go sometimes on a mountain trail Single file.
- 8:39And it is a narrow opening. It's one individual before God.
- 8:43Exactly. We go one at a time.
- 8:46Is there any place you can think of where we do that?
- 8:49Yeah, you know, I think this is not only the ancient temples
- 8:51where on the day of atonement the High priest would go before
- 8:55the Lord one person at a time. He is going to the veil to speak
- 9:00to God one-on-one. The ancient temple text is is
- 9:04seen here in Nephi's writings. Even though we're there as a
- 9:07group, as a ward, or as a whole company in the temple, we're
- 9:12also there one at a time. How can we be both one and many?
- 9:17I don't know. Well, it's kind of a miracle we
- 9:20think in temporal kind of divisions like that, but we can
- 9:24be both. In the gospel it's we don't have
- 9:27to choose between a group and individual because we have to be
- 9:32both. We have to be both and the
- 9:34other. The other thing that it talks
- 9:36about is that the gate is narrow.
- 9:39Now we're talking about going through a gate.
- 9:41You remember what Jesus said about a gate?
- 9:44How about a camel getting through a gate?
- 9:46Remember that little saying? What's that all about?
- 9:48Yeah. Yeah, you can't go through with
- 9:50all your baggage. That's right.
- 9:52So when he's talking about the narrowness of the gate, I think
- 9:56he's saying you have to offload whatever you have that may be
- 10:02too worldly transgressions that are going to be interfering, and
- 10:10you offload these things through repentance or and faith.
- 10:15That's right. Following him, and you go
- 10:16through the steps, and then the Spirit can be the cleansing
- 10:19agent, and Jesus's words are actually given.
- 10:21The Lord speaks to him in verse 12.
- 10:24The voice of the Son came unto me saying, He that is baptized
- 10:27in my name to him will the Father give the Holy Ghost.
- 10:32This is so significant to me. They're not only working as a
- 10:35team, but Jack. This was the whole question that
- 10:39separated the Eastern Orthodox Church Christian Church from the
- 10:42Western Roman Christian Church. Who sent the Spirit?
- 10:47Was it the Father or the Son? This is the point that they
- 10:50separated over and right here in verse 12 the Father sent the
- 10:55Spirit. Then it continues on in verse
- 10:5712. Wherefore follow me.
- 11:00Do the things which you have seen me do, and that's the end
- 11:03of the Son's words. And then as we turn the page,
- 11:06there's the Father's words. And the Father says, listen to
- 11:10the Son. That's in verse 15 I heard the
- 11:14voice of the Father saying, yeah, the words of my beloved
- 11:17are true and faithful, and he that endureth to the end, the
- 11:21same shall be saved. So now we have another point to
- 11:23the follow with faith and repentance and baptism.
- 11:27It's now endure. Endure to the end, and Jesus
- 11:31will include that in 3511 as well.
- 11:35Oh, that's. Great.
- 11:35So it's very consistent and when it says these are the words that
- 11:40the father and the son give, it would, I think, be hard to get
- 11:46it that precise. As you think of Joseph Smith
- 11:51translating the Book of Mormon, you would think that on a
- 11:56different day it might be given in a a different formula or
- 12:01different wording that's used. But the precision of this, and I
- 12:07think that contributes Lynn to this idea of it being plain,
- 12:11it's not confusing. But also, I think the word
- 12:15precious. What?
- 12:16What does Precious mean to you? Valuable.
- 12:19Beloved. And then what do you do with
- 12:21precious things? I honor them.
- 12:24I take care of them. I I try to keep them.
- 12:28Do you go trying to modify them? Or Oh no, no, no.
- 12:33These things are kind of they're so valuable and you love them
- 12:37because of what they mean. And that's why we put things in
- 12:42museums. That's why you put things in a
- 12:46safe deposit box to protect them.
- 12:48And of course you have to take them out to use them and wear
- 12:51them. But the truths are that precious
- 12:54and need our protection and valuing.
- 13:02In Second Nephi, starting in verse 13 and 14, there's a
- 13:05really beautiful parallel. It's a direct parallelism, and I
- 13:08got it in Brother Perry's book. I don't know how many of you are
- 13:12familiar with Donald Perry's poetic parallelisms in the Book
- 13:14of Mormon, but he writes out these beautiful text of the
- 13:18scripture, showing where some of these parallels lie, where a
- 13:22chiasmus fits in, where the repetition comes.
- 13:25And one of the direct parallels that I can tell, Nephi has
- 13:28carefully crafted his text to be exactly how he wants.
- 13:33So look at verse 13 in that pattern and paralleling it with
- 13:37parts of 14. No deception before God, but
- 13:40with real intent, repenting of your sins, witnessing unto the
- 13:44Father that you are willing to take upon the name of Christ.
- 13:48Look how carefully Nephi has paralleled them.
- 13:51He then goes into baptism, baptism by fire in the Holy
- 13:54Ghost, and then he introduces this beautiful phrase, speaking
- 13:59with a tongue of angels, and you can shout praises to the Holy
- 14:03One. And then Nephi has a little
- 14:05statement in the middle. But behold, my beloved brethren,
- 14:08Thus came the voice of the Son unto me, saying, And then he
- 14:12repeats him again. After you've repented of your
- 14:15sins, you've witnessed to the Father you're willing to be
- 14:17baptized, You're baptized by fire, and you can speak with a
- 14:22new tongue and with the tongue of angels.
- 14:25Then he gives the warning that Christ gave him.
- 14:27After this, should you deny me, it would have been better for
- 14:31you that you had not known me. So that's pretty serious.
- 14:35This is very serious. So why do you think Nephi has to
- 14:40tell us this twice? Does he think we aren't reading
- 14:43carefully? It's a second witness, Jack.
- 14:45It's a second witness. You're right.
- 14:48And why is having two witnesses important?
- 14:52Because at the end he's going to say you're now accountable.
- 14:56Oh, that's right, he says. I'm.
- 14:58I'm shaking the your sins off me, OK?
- 15:01And you have and it's not just my witness, but the son and the
- 15:06father. So we have 3 witnesses
- 15:09establishing this, which emphasizes its seriousness.
- 15:13And I think that's really important that we we have unity
- 15:22in plurality and that's a really important model for we want
- 15:27unity in our family. We do.
- 15:29We want to all be the same or do we want to be different.
- 15:32It's both. We want to.
- 15:34But in the you becoming united, we become stronger.
- 15:40And if we can be united under Christ, the other differences
- 15:44add flavor and beauty and and enjoyment.
- 15:47But that that core center being founded on Christ is exactly
- 15:51what Nephi talks about next in verse 19.
- 15:54For he have not come thus far save it by the word of Christ
- 15:59with unshaken faith. Now Nephi says here his faith is
- 16:03unshakable, and then his brother Jacob says my faith is
- 16:07unshakable, and then E Nos says my faith became unshakable.
- 16:11And I think this is the goal of discipleship.
- 16:13We want to have enough experiences with the Spirit of
- 16:15the Lord that we can clearly stay as He did.
- 16:19That I believe, And he the way we do it, He gives us in the
- 16:23very next line. We have to rely wholly on the
- 16:27merits of Him who is mighty to save.
- 16:29And then verse 20 says, And the way that this can happen is if
- 16:33you press forward with a steadfastness in Christ.
- 16:36And if you do that, then the blessings are you will have a
- 16:39perfect brightness of hope, a love of God toward all men.
- 16:43And if you press forward, feasting upon the words of
- 16:46Christ, and endure to the end, behold, let's say the Father,
- 16:50you will have eternal life. So for all of us who have been
- 16:55baptized have tried to repent every day.
- 16:58This is a message for us. If we can rely wholly on the
- 17:02merits of the Lord, then we can press forward and receive these
- 17:06gifts of charity and faith and hope and enduring.
- 17:10Now, we're not all going to get it right the first time.
- 17:13Oh, or the 2nd or the 100th. That's right.
- 17:16And and repentance of course is always possible, but there's an
- 17:20important word in here in these verses Nephi that where he
- 17:26emphasizes the willingness. Yes.
- 17:29And that the thing that can be unshakable in our lives is our
- 17:35willingness that we want. Yeah, our willingness plays a
- 17:38big part. It's in verse 14 if you are
- 17:41willing and then back again earlier in verse 10, you should
- 17:46have to be willing to keep the commandments.
- 17:48So I I appreciate that if our heart is desiring it, we can
- 17:52make mistakes, but we still go back and say I want to do
- 17:55better. That's right.
- 17:57And as long as we want want means we lack.
- 18:00When you're wanting something, you're lacking something.
- 18:03But when you're willing, that means that you are giving your
- 18:07will that you are are now. I want to do it your way.
- 18:14That's right. Thy will be done.
- 18:17Oh, that's beautiful, Jack. Now, do we ever use this word
- 18:20today in? In the sacrament, Oh.
- 18:26And who put those words in the sacrament prayer?
- 18:29The Savior. Yeah.
- 18:30When did that happen? In 3rd Nephi.
- 18:32That's right when he's visiting there.
- 18:34So just at the same time he's talking about this is my gospel
- 18:38more this is my doctrine. Then Christ inserts that willing
- 18:42to take upon my name, and willing to keep my commandments,
- 18:45and willing Oh. And so when we partake of the
- 18:49sacrament, we can do what Nephi is exhorting us to do, being
- 18:54steadfast. These are good verses to read
- 18:56during the sacrament, I think. They are good.
- 19:00I can't think of a better chapter.
- 19:03There are many that are good, but this one is outstanding.
- 19:06And what Nephi, remember what he's giving us Here is his
- 19:10farewell. This is his farewell speech,
- 19:13these last three chapters. When you think about it, you
- 19:18know most of us, I think, are glad that we don't get to speak
- 19:20at our funeral. But Nephi gets to have his words
- 19:24heard. But he does, and I think the
- 19:26prophets want to do this. They want to give us their last
- 19:31will and testament, and we can translate that as their last
- 19:36desire and testimony. And that's what Nephi is giving
- 19:41us here. And then in chapter 32 he
- 19:49answers the question what do you do after baptism?
- 19:52And he refers more to the gifts of the Spirit.
- 19:54But I love this phrase, the tongue of angels.
- 19:58So I'm in verse two. Do ye not remember that I said
- 20:02unto you that after you'd received the Holy Ghost ye could
- 20:05speak with a tongue of angels? Jack, this is amazing.
- 20:09And then he says in verse 3, angels speak by the power of the
- 20:12Holy Ghost. So when we are speaking by the
- 20:14power of the Holy Ghost, I think he's saying we're speaking with
- 20:18a tongue of angels. So when we're nurturing and.
- 20:22Helping others. We're speaking with a tongue of
- 20:24angels. If it's the spirits driving us,
- 20:27it's powerful. How else can you describe that?
- 20:30Haven't you felt times when you have said things and you say
- 20:35where did that come? From Oh, yes.
- 20:36Oh, yes. Or you've said things and
- 20:39someone walks up to you afterwards and says that was
- 20:43exactly what I needed to hear today.
- 20:46But it's not us. It's the Spirit that's right,
- 20:49and that's why I think he speaks so much in these last three
- 20:51chapters on the need to follow the Spirit.
- 20:53And that's what takes you to the tongue of angels, verse 8.
- 20:57For if you would hearken unto the Spirit which teaches a man
- 21:01to pray, you would know that you must pray, And then is
- 21:05paralleled exactly the opposite, because the evil spirit teaches
- 21:07not a man to pray. But if we continue in prayer all
- 21:12day long, just keep your conversation with the Lord
- 21:14going, seeking to do His will, then I think verse 9 is even
- 21:19more powerful. Our actions will be consecrated
- 21:23by the Spirit. You you do know that the evil
- 21:26spirit is the one that teaches us that we don't need to pray.
- 21:31So if you ever feel like you don't need to pray, you ask,
- 21:34well, who is agitating in that direction?
- 21:40Recognize it immediately. Yeah, yeah.
- 21:42But in verse nine I say unto you that you must pray always and
- 21:48not faint. So faint.
- 21:51What does faint mean? You're tired.
- 21:54You're not there. Really there?
- 21:56When we faint, it's kind of like we we pass out, right?
- 22:02We lose consciousness, and I think sometimes when we pray,
- 22:07yes, we do often say the same things over and over again.
- 22:11But don't ever lose consciousness about what it what
- 22:15you're asking. Ask with real intent.
- 22:18And then it says that ye must not perform anything unto the
- 22:22Lord, save it. In the 1st place you shall pray
- 22:25unto the Father in the name of Christ, and that he will
- 22:29consecrate thy performance unto thee, that thy performance may
- 22:34be for the welfare of thy soul. So if we are everything we do
- 22:37during the day, if it's done through the name of our Savior,
- 22:41if it's done through prayer, it will be consecrated for our
- 22:45good. This is such a wonderful verse.
- 22:49Yes, it is. And what does it mean to
- 22:51consecrate something? We give it to God, isn't it?
- 22:54Well, yes, to dedicate it and to say, if you Lord will help me
- 23:01with this, thine be the glory. I don't want this to be done so
- 23:07people will think that. I trust you, not me.
- 23:11Yes, I am wonderful or whatever. No, I'm doing it in in your
- 23:14name. But if I'm doing it in your
- 23:16name, then he can help us more because the glory will come to
- 23:22him. We may be the only ones who know
- 23:26that the glory has come. That that wasn't me that did
- 23:28that, but that was will then be a bonding between US and the
- 23:34Lord. Now when you say we should pray
- 23:38in everything we do, that we should do nothing, you shall not
- 23:43perform anything unto the Lord save you first pray.
- 23:47What might that kind of thing be?
- 23:49I. Think it's more than just
- 23:50preparing our talks or our lessons or our missionary work?
- 23:54Or I think my day-to-day actions are also unto the Lord.
- 24:00When I had my little cherubs at home and I was a full time mom,
- 24:05I tried to pray to know how to best raise my children.
- 24:10I prayed to know how to best meet their needs, how to best
- 24:13teach them the gospel. I feel like my husband prayed
- 24:16over his work. My uncle even prayed for
- 24:18solutions as a doctor to find resolution for some of his
- 24:23patience. I feel like we can do this in
- 24:25whatever sphere we're in, so that all of our actions can be
- 24:29consecrated for the good of humanity and the good of God.
- 24:33And we we dedicate and hope that anything we do will be to the
- 24:40glory of God and the testimony building of the people we are
- 24:45associating with now. When I taught at BYU, although I
- 24:51was in the law school, I often was asked to teach religion
- 24:57classes, sometimes in the honors program, but especially Book of
- 25:00Mormon classes. And as I left my office, every
- 25:05time as I was going off to teach IA Book of Mormon class, I would
- 25:11stop at the door and I would offer a prayer.
- 25:14Sometimes it was short because I was out of time.
- 25:17But you would offer a prayer before you taught, so that not
- 25:21only would the Spirit of the Lord be there, but so that this
- 25:23could be consecrated. That's right.
- 25:25And that I wanted the help. And I've done that now.
- 25:30I learned that lesson as I went to teach religion classes.
- 25:36But I remembered that as a missionary, we did that too.
- 25:39And so it wasn't long before every time I walked out of my
- 25:44office, even if I was teaching a class on corporate tax.
- 25:48You pray. I will pray.
- 25:49Good for you. Jack and it it made a huge
- 25:53difference. Yeah, this is a this verse has
- 25:56made a huge impact in my life. It gave me peace.
- 26:00It gave me memory, because the promises that he will bring to
- 26:06your memory, the things that you need in the moment when you need
- 26:09them. And right now, I hadn't thought
- 26:13about that until we just started talking about it.
- 26:15And I think. Because.
- 26:17We prayed before we did this. That kind of thing comes to our
- 26:22attention. And I know this happens a lot.
- 26:26Oh, it can, and I think it can happen more.
- 26:28You know, the Prophet, as soon as he was called in 2018, said I
- 26:32need you to pay more attention to the Spirit.
- 26:34And Nephi is saying I need you to pay more attention to the
- 26:37Spirit, especially in these last days when the Adversary is so
- 26:41powerful. But let's jump into the last
- 26:49chapter 33, this beautiful section where it talks about
- 26:53Nephi's tears as he's crying for these three people that he
- 26:57loves. This is verse one for when a man
- 27:00speaketh by the power of the Holy Ghost.
- 27:02The power of the Holy Ghost carries it to the hearts of men,
- 27:06and he just wants, he said. I'm, I'm a terrible writer.
- 27:08They described many times how hard it is to engraven on these
- 27:11plates, and he said I wish I didn't have to write.
- 27:14I wish I could just teach. But why does he say he's a
- 27:16terrible writer? He's an incredible writer.
- 27:19He is do. You think he's a perfectionist?
- 27:22I don't know, but he has a lot of Isaiah to look at.
- 27:24You know, if you're comparing yourself to Shakespeare, what
- 27:26are you going to say? You know?
- 27:27There you go. We all know our deficiencies,
- 27:30yeah. But we also know where we can
- 27:32turn for help. And he recognizes also Doesn't
- 27:36he lend the limitations of the medium that he's working with
- 27:41what he's writing? It's not only is it hard to
- 27:43write on metal plates. And he's using it in a foreign
- 27:47language. This isn't a reformed Egyptian,
- 27:49It's not even his Hebrew, he said.
- 27:50If I could write in Hebrew, would be better.
- 27:52He has to do that to save space on the plates.
- 27:56But Nephi must be asking himself why am I going to all this
- 28:00effort? This is so hard.
- 28:03I'm so tired. And and so limited, Surely there
- 28:08must be a better way to get the message out.
- 28:11And he must be rejoicing in the way his words have now gone out
- 28:16to the whole world. But it's you can put yourself in
- 28:20his position, and he certainly has to say, at least when I'm
- 28:25speaking, I can speak to everyone in town and they can
- 28:32understand more clearly and I can see in their face what
- 28:36they're understanding and they they can be influenced more and
- 28:43be receptive of the spirit when I'm speaking.
- 28:48But when I'm writing, you know, this is a very discouraging
- 28:52verse for those of us who spend a lot of time writing.
- 28:57It's good to write, but there are limitations.
- 29:02And then he synthesizes. I'm trying to talk about 5
- 29:04things. That's verse four.
- 29:07He asked the Lord again. He uses the word consecrate in
- 29:09my prayers for the gain of my people, and the words which I
- 29:12have written in weakness, which will made strong for them.
- 29:17And then he goes to the five points, for it persuaded them to
- 29:20do good #2. It maketh known unto them of
- 29:24their fathers, and it speaketh of Jesus. 3 And it's persuaded
- 29:30them to believe in him, and to endure to the end.
- 29:33That's four which is eternal life, And then five, And it
- 29:37speaketh harshly against sin, according to the plainness of
- 29:42the truth. So how do you know of something
- 29:44sinful? Because it does not fit into
- 29:47God's truths. That's a good definition of the
- 29:50the nature of of sin, whatever it is.
- 29:54Our generation, at least in my sphere, in California, the word
- 29:58sin is not really a politically correct.
- 30:01And yet, in our sphere of disciples of Jesus Christ, we
- 30:06need to say sin is things that take you away from Christ,
- 30:10things that take you away from his truths.
- 30:13I think that's absolutely right and the word for sin in the
- 30:19ancient languages doesn't carry some of this condemning baggage
- 30:24that we don't like to say. I'm a Sinner because that seems
- 30:28to be so self deprecating or demeaning.
- 30:31The word for sin means more to miss the mark that when I've
- 30:38tried to do something and I've missed the mark, well, I I might
- 30:44say that's that's a mistake or that's a problem, but that's
- 30:47what the scriptures are usually saying when we sin because we
- 30:52normally think that people do try to do good.
- 30:58They're doing the best they can, at least, yeah.
- 31:00But sometimes, even doing the best we can, we miss the mark.
- 31:03Yes, most of the time, for me at least.
- 31:07And Christ can fix that. And that's when the love and the
- 31:10hope comes in is because no matter where we are on the
- 31:13spectrum of sin, Christ can fix it.
- 31:17Now there may be times, and King Benjamin will talk about coming
- 31:22out in open rebellion against God when you define sin in that
- 31:27way. And that's of course an extreme
- 31:30matter, especially when you were acting against your sacred
- 31:35knowledge. And that's what Nephi is
- 31:39referring to when he says it would be better that you had not
- 31:43known these things if you turn against them consciously.
- 31:48Yes, that's what Nephi described back in chapter 31.
- 31:51It's better that you hadn't even known if you're going to rebel
- 31:55against him. Yeah, and and why is that the
- 31:57case? Because we're going to be held
- 31:58accountable for what we know. Oh, does Nephi use that word
- 32:01accountable? I don't know Jack, does he?
- 32:03I don't think so. OK, but does he know the
- 32:05principle? Yeah.
- 32:06OK. Yeah.
- 32:07It's pretty clear that he has learned accountability because
- 32:14of, you know, he was invited, he was asked to go and do things
- 32:18and he says I must go and do the things that the Lord has
- 32:22commanded. And then that's how he ends.
- 32:24He comes through here with So he's asked us to do these things
- 32:27there in verse 4. But he continues on talking
- 32:30about I love verse six, I glory in Plainness.
- 32:35I see this as his grand finale and it's these beautiful
- 32:38parallels. I glory in truth, my glory in my
- 32:44Jesus, for he hath redeemed my soul from hell. 3 glories,
- 32:49right? Plainness, truth and Jesus.
- 32:53I glory in my Jesus. And then he goes on and talks
- 32:56about I have charity. I have charity not just for my
- 32:58people, but I have charity for my enemies.
- 33:00I have charity for my father's enemies back in Jerusalem, the
- 33:03Jews. And gentiles, he actually uses
- 33:07three times. I have charity.
- 33:08The three glories can be related to the three charities.
- 33:12See glories in these things and when you glory in something is
- 33:17that. I don't think it's prideful at
- 33:19all. No, no, no.
- 33:20Because in my thought, the gifts of the Spirit are what allow you
- 33:24to have these feelings, and charity is a gift to the Spirit.
- 33:27We have to be patient and long-suffering.
- 33:29We have to not step on other people and not be.
- 33:32You know all the details that Moroni and Paul describe on what
- 33:35we have to do to develop charity, but it's a gift of the
- 33:38Spirit. And when you receive that
- 33:40spirit, you're glorying in Jesus.
- 33:42You're you're know you're glorying in Jesus, not in
- 33:44anything you did. You know it's from God.
- 33:46That's right. And that's, I think, what he's
- 33:49also saying when he talks about the tongue of angels.
- 33:57That's an interesting idea, that we as mortals can speak with the
- 34:04tongues of angels. When do we do that?
- 34:07I think he describes it as the Spirit when the Spirit is there.
- 34:10OK, any other times do we speak with the tongue of angels?
- 34:14I don't know. Well, Nephi goes on to talk
- 34:18about We speak when we shout Hallelujah.
- 34:23That's speaking with the tongue of angels.
- 34:25What does Hallelujah mean? Hallelujahs.
- 34:27Praise the Lord. Yeah.
- 34:29And so when we praise God and with the Spirit, we are speaking
- 34:35with the tongue of angels. And so, as we thank God and
- 34:39praise God, we are speaking with the tongue.
- 34:41Oh, nice. That's a beautiful bridge.
- 34:44And when we do that, when we praise God, we are thinking
- 34:49outside of ourselves, and we're praising him for His goodness,
- 34:53for the plan of salvation, for the blessings of this world and
- 34:57of this life. And so I think when Nephi is now
- 35:02glorying in, he's praising. When he says I glory in, he's
- 35:09glorifying. Nephi next goes to the idea that
- 35:15he is going to seal these words. This is verse 14.
- 35:19I bid you an everlasting farewell, for these words shall
- 35:22condemn you at the last day. That doesn't sound like a very
- 35:25good farewell. I'm condemning you.
- 35:27Well then he says, For what I seal on earth shall be brought
- 35:31against you at the judgment bar. And thus hath the Lord commanded
- 35:36me, and I must obey. Amen.
- 35:39OK, now there's a lot packed into there there.
- 35:42Sure is. Now is he doing this for our
- 35:44condemnation? No, He wants us to learn the
- 35:48doctrine of Christ, but he is saying there will be
- 35:51consequences. And accountability, yeah.
- 35:53Yeah. He doesn't use that word, but
- 35:56it's very clear that he has charity for everyone.
- 36:00And because he has charity and the love of Christ, he wants to
- 36:05be sure that everyone can accept this.
- 36:09And he's going to make a strong point.
- 36:11That's why why he is. Remember, he's speaking about
- 36:15speaking harshly against sin. We think that doesn't sound very
- 36:19kind. Oh, no.
- 36:21Because what he's he's warning us.
- 36:23It's a it's a gift of love to speak against sin.
- 36:25Notice that he's speaking harshly against sin, not against
- 36:29sinners. Of course, yes, yes, yes, of
- 36:31course it is. And so when he at the end can
- 36:35say as my I will seal this. What does that mean?
- 36:39I seal this. Well, we talked earlier about
- 36:42seals as permanent things as making them valid.
- 36:47The person who writes it is the only one who can seal it, and
- 36:50then a judge is the only one who can read it.
- 36:53We've talked about that before. That's right.
- 36:55So you kind of think that Nephi has at the end of this record,
- 37:00this is his last entry. He has impressed on the metal
- 37:06some kind of seal that says this is my word, you know, they
- 37:13didn't have copyright and they didn't have signatures and but
- 37:18when they put a seal, their personal seal on it.
- 37:22So there's the authentication and then the permanence of it.
- 37:27But Nephi, he's the the leader. And so with his full plenary
- 37:35authority, we would say he has complete authority over all
- 37:39aspects of of his rule and responsibility.
- 37:45And we don't see this word seal used by other people.
- 37:50But the king would have a seal, and he is saying these promises
- 37:57I seal upon you, of course, according to your faithfulness.
- 38:10I think one of the most telling moments in second Nephi are the
- 38:17last couple words that Nephi gives us where he says, I have
- 38:22written this, and I have sealed this.
- 38:26For thus hath the Lord commanded me, and I must obey.
- 38:32Amen. His understanding of the law of
- 38:35obedience, I think, shines really brightly.
- 38:40He is authentically an obedient person, and his last word to us
- 38:48is God has commanded this, and so I must obey.
- 38:53And look what his first Test when he was, as a young man,
- 38:56converting to his message. I will go and do the things
- 39:00which the Lord has commanded that becomes Nephi's watch cry.
- 39:06And here it is at the beginning and the end of his two books.
- 39:10Yeah, that's a great bookend, isn't it?
- 39:13When you study literature and study great writers, often they
- 39:20realize at the end of a book that the final punctuation, the
- 39:24final words that are being said, need to envelope and develop and
- 39:32articulate what it's all really been about.
- 39:37Some of the classics that are very dramatic are even deathbed
- 39:43statements coming out of just ordinary good literature.
- 39:48How does Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities, end with Sydney
- 39:53Carton's last Words? It is a far, far better thing
- 39:58that I do than I have ever done, optimistically saying the world
- 40:05will be better from this chaos that is now.
- 40:10Emerging. How about the final words of
- 40:14rabble? A I am going to seek a greater,
- 40:19perhaps looking for perhaps things may be different than I
- 40:27had previously assumed. I'm open to more, he says.
- 40:33Lord Nelson, Admiral of the British Navy.
- 40:37What does he say in his final word?
- 40:40Thank God I have done my duty. Duty, of course.
- 40:45That's 19th century British epitome of virtue, Goethe great
- 40:52German poet and thinker and writer and humanist.
- 41:00His final words? More light.
- 41:06There's more light. And I think Nephi would agree
- 41:09there's more yet to come, and he knew that the Christ would come.
- 41:13He's recognizing we haven't had it all.
- 41:16What we do know is there's more and more light.
- 41:21Finally, Pancho Villa, don't let it end like this.
- 41:28Tell them I said something. Well, we can get a good chuckle
- 41:35out of that. Obviously.
- 41:37It's a serious matter, but we don't want to let things end
- 41:43like this. I think Nephi could share that.
- 41:45It's not over. Don't let it end like this.
- 41:49This is just mortal. There's much more to come.
- 41:54Well, these are just examples of last words when we talk about
- 41:59the Book of Mormon as of course being the word of God and Joseph
- 42:04said the most correct book of any book on earth.
- 42:08It is a a piece of classic world literature.
- 42:11It is a great book and these concluding statements are in the
- 42:17mode of and are on par with the greatest writings that the world
- 42:23has seen. And I'm so glad for that.
- 42:27Oh, Jack, that is beautiful. What a way to end your book.
- 42:31Well, I hope that you have felt the spur of the Lord as you have
- 42:34read the Book of Mormon. I have never enjoyed second
- 42:38Nephi more than I have this year, and I have received
- 42:41witness after witness that these are God's words, and that if we
- 42:45will follow them, we can come unto Christ and be saved by him.
- 42:50And I am a second witness for that, and I'm very grateful then
- 42:55to be able to share these things with you and through you.
- 42:59You're great coming up with wonderful ideas.
- 43:03And I hope that everyone will rejoice in what they learned
- 43:08from, especially from you. Thank you.
- 43:12Thank you.
