- Lucas: Hey everyone, welcome back to Learn Cantonese with Fexingo! I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Ready to learn more Cantonese today? Lucas: So Luna, last episode we ordered at a restaurant. Remember? 我要叉燒飯. Luna: Yes! That was so useful. But today, let's go to a market. I love shopping for fresh fruit. Lucas: Perfect. Markets are great for practicing Cantonese. So today's phrases are all about buying fruit. Luna: Oh, I'm excited. What's the first phrase? Lucas: First, you see something you want. You ask: 呢個幾多錢? That means 'how much is this?'. Luna: 呢個幾多錢? Let me try. 呢個幾多錢? Lucas: Exactly. 呢個 means 'this', 幾多錢 means 'how much money'. So: 呢個幾多錢. Luna: 呢個幾多錢. Got it. So if I point at an apple, I say that. Lucas: Right. And the seller might say a price. If it's too high, you can say: 平啲啦. That means 'cheaper please'. Luna: 平啲啦. Ooh, bargaining! 平啲啦. Lucas: Yeah. 平 means 'cheap', 啲 means 'a bit'. So 平啲啦 is 'a bit cheaper please'. Very polite. Luna: I love that. Okay, so I ask the price, then bargain. Then I decide to buy. Lucas: Yes. Let's say you want three pounds of apples. In Cantonese, a pound is 斤. So: 我要三斤蘋果. Luna: 我要三斤蘋果. That's 'I want three pounds of apples'. Lucas: Perfect. 三 is three, 斤 is pound, 蘋果 is apple. You can replace 蘋果 with any fruit. Luna: What about oranges? I love oranges. Lucas: 橙 is orange. And for oranges, sometimes they use 磅, which is also pound. So: 我要兩磅橙. Luna: 我要兩磅橙. Two pounds of oranges. Lucas: Exactly. 兩 is two, 磅 is pound, 橙 is orange. So you've got two options: 斤 for some fruits, 磅 for others. Luna: Okay. And then I pay. How do I say 'pay'? Lucas: You can say 畀錢. That means 'pay money'. So you hand over your money and say 畀錢. Luna: 畀錢. Simple. Lucas: Let's put it all together. Imagine you're at a market stall. You see some apples. You ask: 呢個幾多錢? Luna: 呢個幾多錢? The seller says thirty dollars a pound. I say: 平啲啦? How about twenty? Lucas: They agree. You say: 我要三斤蘋果. Then you pay: 畀錢. Luna: Perfect. I can totally do that. Lucas: Now let's practice the phrases again. Repeat after me: 呢個幾多錢. Luna: 呢個幾多錢. Lucas: 平啲啦. Luna: 平啲啦. Lucas: 我要三斤蘋果. Luna: 我要三斤蘋果. Lucas: 我要兩磅橙. Luna: 我要兩磅橙. Lucas: 畀錢. Luna: 畀錢. Lucas: Awesome. You're sounding like a local already. Luna: Thanks! That's 'do you have oranges?'. Lucas: Exactly. 你哋 is 'you guys', 有冇 is 'have or not have'. So: 你哋有冇橙. Luna: 你哋有冇橙. Good to know. Lucas: Let's do a quick role play. I'm the seller. You come to my stall. Luna: Okay. Uh, 呢個幾多錢? Lucas: I say: 二十蚊一斤. Luna: 平啲啦? 十五蚊? Lucas: Okay, fifteen. 你要幾多? Luna: 我要三斤蘋果. Lucas: 好. 畀錢. Luna: 畀錢. Done! Lucas: Perfect! You just bought apples at a Hong Kong market. Luna: That felt great. I'm ready for my market trip now. Lucas: Let's review the key phrases one more time. 呢個幾多錢. Luna: 呢個幾多錢. Lucas: 平啲啦. Luna: 平啲啦. Lucas: 我要三斤蘋果. Luna: 我要三斤蘋果. Lucas: 我要兩磅橙. Luna: 我要兩磅橙. Lucas: 畀錢. Luna: 畀錢. Lucas: And bonus: 你哋有冇橙? Luna: 你哋有冇橙? Lucas: Great job, Luna.
