- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Anyone can do these actions.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: The most important thing you can do is to start taking these actions right now.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: The first action to stop my mistakes, know your limits.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Know what you're good at, where you are okay at, and what you still need to improve on.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: This is really important to stop making mistakes.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: The less good you are in a particular area, the more you should check your work and the more you should ask for help early.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Obvious to many, yet consistently taking action is the challenge for most.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: The second action to reduce mistakes is to create a habit of checking your work.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: The more important and impactful the work that you are doing is, the higher your priority is to check this work.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Spend at least 10 days focusing on checking your work.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Prioritize the most important first.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Ten days should be enough to form a habit.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Keep checking your work after this.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Another great tip is to ask others to check your work too, and you can return the favour.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: New eyes spot issues more easily.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: The third action is to create time to check your work.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: This is perhaps the hardest part of reducing mistakes, getting enough time to do your work well.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: This depends on your planning, your prioritizing and your skill in saying no, which we'll cover next.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: You need time to reduce the mistakes you make.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: The fourth action is to plan your work against your capacity.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: This includes prioritizing your work.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: The more you plan your work, the more of your important work that you can do before it becomes urgent.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: I.e.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: do the work with time on your side rather than it falling into the urgent must-do quickly category.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Always prioritize checking the higher impact and higher visibility work you do first.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: The fifth action to reduce mistakes is to learn how to say no diplomatically.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: This is one of the best ways to create time for you to reduce mistakes.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: I'm really sorry I can't fit that in because xxx business reason.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Have you spoken to YYY who might have some capacity?
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Use the format no because of a business reason and then provide alternative options.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: The sixth action to reduce mistakes is to ask for help early.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: This action is really powerful and a little scary.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: The more you ask for help, the faster you will become better at what you do.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: The more you ask for help early, the more you will produce in any given time.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: No one minds helping higher performing staff.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Asking for help early also means you make less mistakes.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: As I mentioned earlier, the most important thing you can do is to start using each of these actions right now.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Many of you will be doing one or more of them already.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Work at getting better at the ones you are doing and start doing the ones that you are not.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Create time to check your work so you reduce the number of mistakes you make.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: When you do make mistakes, ensure they are in low-value, low impact areas.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: And you will make mistakes.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: When you do, it is really important that you take action to minimize the impact of that mistake and reduce the likelihood of it happening again, which we'll cover next.

- 6:27SPEAKER_00: I still make plenty of mistakes after many years of doing my job.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: Mistakes are expected even if they're not welcome.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: There are six really important actions that you should take as soon as you spot a mistake.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: Firstly, to overcome mistakes at work, take responsibility quickly.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: This means doing your best to reduce or remove the impact of the mistake rather than ignoring it or making excuses.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Even worse is trying to blame others or cover it up.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: The second action to overcome your mistakes at work, do your best to rectify the mistake, and if this is not possible, then reduce the impact of the mistake.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Proactively work by yourself first and then ask others for help if needed.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Communicate the issues early if needed so the impact of your mistake does not grow.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: The third action is to find the root cause of the mistake.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: For example, when not checking your work, the root cause is often a lack of time or prioritization.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: Be as honest as you can with yourself.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Find the root cause and make changes.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: The fourth action to overcome mistakes is to change what you are doing to prevent future mistakes.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: The bigger the impact, the more important this is to do.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: If you don't learn from a mistake, you go on to make an even bigger mistake.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Make the time to think through this point carefully and take action.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: The fifth action is to communicate with any stakeholders as early as necessary.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: It is always better to communicate after you have rectified the mistake or minimized its impact.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: You may not have to communicate at all.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Always communicate early when the impact of your mistake will increase if others don't know about the mistake.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: The sixth action to overcome mistakes at work is to cultivate a growth mindset.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: A growth mindset is about maximising the personal improvement after making a mistake.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: To get good at anything means making mistakes.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Mistakes are part of the learning process.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Make the time to think honestly about the situation, what caused the mistake, and take action to learn from it.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: The most important thing you can do now is to start practicing each of the actions that we've gone through today to stop mistakes at work.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: When you make mistakes, take the action to discuss for how to overcome your mistakes quickly without the impact increasing.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Preventing mistakes and overcoming mistakes are skills.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: The more you practice, the better you get.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: The less mistakes you make, and certainly the less mistakes you make that are meaningfully impact the team or business, the more your team members and boss will like working with you.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: The more positive your reputation, the more influence you'll gain, the more you'll be paid, and the faster your career will progress.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: And of course, making mistakes is not the only factor to get all these benefits, but it is a very important factor.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: So, in summary, the better you do all the actions that we've been through today, the less mistakes that you'll make at work, and the lower the impact will be of any mistakes that you do make.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: Less mistakes are very definitely part of being more successful at work.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Please put any actions into practice that you're not yet doing.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: Probably more importantly is that you keep working at getting better and more skilled at each of these actions.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: Do these well, and your investment will make a big impact on your enjoyment of work and your success in your role.
