- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Welcome in everybody to the Talkin Tech Podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: My name is Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: Tristan, how are you doing today, man?
- 0:48SPEAKER_04: I fear uh to speak.
- 0:50SPEAKER_04: I don't want to get a foul.
- 0:51SPEAKER_04: You know, I don't want to I don't want to cause any any technicals or or shooting fouls here.
- 0:57SPEAKER_04: So I'm trying to keep uh keep a low tempo here.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, man.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: You gotta just not touch anybody ever, or else, you know, you're going to the free throw line.
- 1:06SPEAKER_04: Or at least that is if you're coached by Coach Bobby Huggins, but A was a it was a good win for the Mountaineers and a even better win for the refs.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: Yes, the refs uh were very much paid off by Huggy Bear as he came in to Lubbock.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: No, uh there were many things that went wrong in that game.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: Uh, we'll go into it here uh in a second, but we had some updates.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: We always start off with a little updates for the smaller sports at Texas Tech.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: Uh Dragonfield remains unbelievable.
- 1:38SPEAKER_02: Uh, men still rank number four in the nation, women still rank number 10 in the nation.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: And I tell you what, right before the Super Bowl, one of our runners ran the mile in the American track league competition where representing double T.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: He had his he had all of his Texas Tech stuff on going up against guys that have been in the Olympics before.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: I mean, just uh super fast dudes.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: He ran the mile in he got first place, ran the mile in uh three minutes, 56 seconds, uh 56.79 seconds.
- 2:11SPEAKER_04: So was that one lap or it's a mile?
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's one lap for me too.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: But no, that I think in that they did it at uh at uh University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: Um, and it's like eight laps or something like that.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: But it was stupid.
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: It was I watched the whole thing, and it was those guys are going stupid fast.
- 2:32SPEAKER_04: That's incredible.
- 2:34SPEAKER_04: I mean that's it's so cool to have a guy repping the double T.
- 2:36SPEAKER_04: So hopefully this is a guy we'll see as an Olympian zoom in.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I I it's the guy that I tried to uh pronounce his name last time.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna give it a go again.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: Uh Takidine Hadili.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: We'll go ahead.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: Good for that guy.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: I'm just gonna say my man.
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: Good for him.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: Uh he beat out Nick Willis, a New Zealander who is a two-time Olympic medalist, not just an Olympian, a medalist in the 1500 meter previously won silver in Beijing and bronze in Rio.
- 3:05SPEAKER_02: And our boy beat him.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: Uh, just continued to get the best athlete, not just the best track athletes and collegiate track athletes, but the best athletes in the whole freaking world, man.
- 3:15SPEAKER_02: We're unbelievable.
- 3:16SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 3:17SPEAKER_04: That's I think that's gonna be a program where if we're not top 10, it's a disappointment from now on.
- 3:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no solidified power status in that zone.
- 3:25SPEAKER_04: So that's that's really cool.
- 3:26SPEAKER_04: And it's just like the classically college sports, too.
- 3:28SPEAKER_04: So I just love the excellence there for sure.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: And then uh, second one shouts out Texas Tech Golf TTU sophomore Ludwig Aberg from Sweden.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: Big Ludwig guys over here, big, big, massive Ludwig guys over here.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: Uh, wins the Jones Cup two under par.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: That means he receives an automatic invite to the RSM Classic, which is a part of the PGA tour.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: So, along with last year, we had like Sandy Scott, he was another guy that did awesome for TTU golf.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: We got another one, and I think both of these guys are like in the top 10 for amateurs in the world right now.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: So, TTU Golf, we got some we got some boys, man.
- 4:09SPEAKER_04: Am I allowed to say power status again?
- 4:12SPEAKER_04: Yes, because power program.
- 4:15SPEAKER_04: Our programs are just so good, and like it it we just grabbing ourselves some speeds to represent the double T out here golfing, love it, big Ludbig guys.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: So what do you what it what do you think our golf and our track coach does with these guys that are foreign?
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: I mean, the first guy, the track and field guy's from Algeria.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: What do you think he says when he like he like explains what West Texas is?
- 4:40SPEAKER_04: I think his first pitch is a do you know what Lubbock is?
- 4:44SPEAKER_04: And then there's no response.
- 4:48SPEAKER_04: They're like on a picture of it, and they just kind of and again, no response.
- 4:53SPEAKER_04: But yeah, I think that's probably goes along those lines.
- 4:57SPEAKER_03: You think that's how it goes?
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: Just absolutely nothing, and then they commit to Texas Tech.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: Okay, they don't they don't ever have to say a word except okay, fine.
- 5:07SPEAKER_04: I'm sure the Swedish guy is like, is it as cold as this place?
- 5:10SPEAKER_03: You're like, no, but it gets kind of cold sometimes, and he's like, That's fine.
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm in.
- 5:16SPEAKER_03: I as long as it doesn't snow.
- 5:18SPEAKER_04: Like, is it cooler than this place?
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes, there's a lot of dust and there's wind, but the temperature, not bad.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: Like, fine, we're in.
- 5:36SPEAKER_04: In if all I got about that, and that's literally only Lubbock, you know.
- 5:39SPEAKER_04: You can only pitch temperatures if you're going for Lubbock, so yeah, that's right.
- 5:44SPEAKER_03: Hey, we got that going for us.
- 5:46SPEAKER_04: We got fantastic programs.
- 5:48SPEAKER_04: That's what we got going for us.
- 5:49SPEAKER_04: Yes, we do.
- 5:49SPEAKER_04: So they just phenomenal job from the coaches there, and it just it shows how high uh the excellence of all the programs, except for football.
- 5:57SPEAKER_02: So yeah, except for a select few that we aren't gonna go into today, but we are gonna go into the Super Bowl.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: Why don't we just give a little recap?
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: Unfortunate for Pat Mahomes, could not pull it out.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: Um, Tom Brady and Tampa Bay.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, he wins his seventh Super Bowl ring, which is stupid.
- 6:19SPEAKER_02: He now has more Super Bowl rings than every NFL franchise, uh, which is again stupid.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: Uh just unreal.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: Tom was unreal.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: Mahomes had no help.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: Uh tough game for the Chiefs and Patrick.
- 6:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah, a bizarre game for the Chiefs to just collapse on Patrick like that.
- 6:38SPEAKER_04: And the most incredible thing is how Patrick was playing on a very injured with a very injured body.
- 6:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:45SPEAKER_04: He was beat up with surgery soon.
- 6:47SPEAKER_04: So that's it's it's pretty incredible how he was playing at that level, yet uh no one was giving him any help.
- 6:53SPEAKER_04: He would throw the ball to their face masks and they would drop it.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: So it's I mean, he made he made three unbelievable plays that just were are not going to be remembered because they were incompletions or whatever.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: But yeah, his receivers a lot of the time let him down, but uh it was really his O-line.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: He had no he had no chance, no quarterback would have had a chance with that O-line, and you know, credit to the Bucks defense because they were fantastic.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: But I mean that O-line was so depleted, they had nobody that started for them last year in their Super Bowl run was on their O-line this year, or was on was this game this year, but um, yeah, man, uh a lot of injuries, last minute, uh Eric Fisher, uh, those type of guys.
- 7:36SPEAKER_02: He he really he really struggled back there.
- 7:38SPEAKER_04: Some true Texas Tech PTSD for the fans probably it was probably like Vietnam in Patrick's head, so running for his wife like that as soon as the ball snaps, you know.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: The the LSU game, the LSU game 2.0, honestly.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: Except, except they didn't get offense.
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: I we somehow got some got some points on the board against LSU when we played.
- 8:00SPEAKER_04: I was about to say, except we were in that game for three quarters.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: No, it's like Patrick would Patrick make a fantastic play, and at least he had Jakeem Grant who would catch it.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Daryl Williams, who hits it right off his face, doesn't catch it.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: Freaking, yeah, that was disappointing to see.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: Um, but it's you know, I think you're kind of the same way with me.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: We we root for Patrick, but it's not like you know, we're sad when the Chiefs lose.
- 8:24SPEAKER_04: It's not gonna be the last Super Bowl he's in.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: You know, this guy is dude's 25.
- 8:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Tom Brady lost his share of Super Bowls, too.
- 8:32SPEAKER_04: So it's he's got a lot to learn.
- 8:34SPEAKER_04: The guy's the guy's still so young, he's our age, so it's he's got a lot to learn, and he's got a lot of years ahead of him.
- 8:40SPEAKER_04: So there's there's no shame there, especially whenever you're losing to Tom Brady.
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: Tom is inevitable.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: He's 43 years old, and he's probably gonna play another eight years because can't help but respect it.
- 8:50SPEAKER_04: Did you see the video of him coming uh coming up on the parade?
- 8:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he was hammered, looked like he was coming home from Broadway.
- 8:57SPEAKER_03: Did you see what he tweeted?
- 8:58SPEAKER_02: Yes, he misspelled everything, he capitalized stupid like letters in the words.
- 9:07SPEAKER_02: Like avocado tequila.
- 9:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's it.
- 9:09SPEAKER_03: It's just the avocado tequila, guys.
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: Don't worry about this.
- 9:13SPEAKER_03: The man deserves it.
- 9:14SPEAKER_03: Let him have it.
- 9:15SPEAKER_03: He's unbelievable.
- 9:17SPEAKER_04: God knows we would be twice as hard, so on all that.
- 9:20SPEAKER_03: So oh, absolutely, absolutely.
- 9:23SPEAKER_03: Party hardy, go party your butt off, Tom.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: But I think you you had an interesting question, and I think it's been kind of going around the uh the Twitter sphere and and with some of these broadcasts on ESPN and uh really wondering like, is Tom Brady the greatest athlete of all time?
- 9:39SPEAKER_04: Well, it's not sports fandom unless you're having these very stupid arguments that are completely pointless that come up all the time, you know.
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: All the time.
- 9:48SPEAKER_04: So yeah, it just got me thinking, you know, a lot of people when we're talking about like the greatest athlete of all time, people jump to to people like Michael Jordan and Tom Brady.
- 9:58SPEAKER_04: But it always goes right over like my head there because I I feel like the obvious answer is Michael Phelps.
- 10:06SPEAKER_04: The man is the most decorated Olympian of all time.
- 10:09SPEAKER_04: The man has 28 total medals, and so in second place has 18 medals, and he has 23 gold.
- 10:18SPEAKER_04: Out of those 28, 23 of them are gold.
- 10:21SPEAKER_04: That's more than what second place has total.
- 10:23SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 10:24SPEAKER_04: The man's a freak, and he'll be doing this into his 30s.
- 10:28SPEAKER_04: The man is I think the man is the single greatest athlete of all time.
- 10:33SPEAKER_04: So again, I and going up against literally the world's greatest in your sport and winning nearly every time, I think that kind of solidifies it.
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, there's definitely an argument.
- 10:44SPEAKER_02: I think it has to be split into two when you're talking about team sports and individual sports.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, I mean, that's that's pretty much that's an argument, man.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: For uh Michael Phelps.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's there's other guys like Roger Federer, there's uh, you know, Serena Williams and in her sport and uh all this kind of individual success.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: Uh, you could even talk about like Usain Bolt, you know, running track and that kind of thing.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: So uh I'd have to get I'd have to do more research, but I think you're pretty spot on there.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: If you're really talking about, you know, individual sports being the greatest at it, you know, the top of the top, no one even comes close.
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: It's probably Michael Phelps.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: I probably agree with you there.
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: But uh team sports, I don't know, man.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: I think I think Jordan still has a still has kind of a uh advantage over Brady.
- 11:28SPEAKER_04: I don't really have a dog in that fight.
- 11:30SPEAKER_04: I mean, I'm not that I'm hardcore about any of this because ultimately, whenever you're uh comparing across sports, it gets kind of cloudy anyway.
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, even even in sports, it gets cloudy.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: The LeBron Jordan argument is stupid, but we still do it for sure.
- 11:44SPEAKER_04: So it's it they these are all just obviously people at the very top of their game.
- 11:49SPEAKER_04: So it's uh nothing but respect to all of them because I mean they they're they're the ghosts, and there's this argument for a reason.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I mean he's the greatest quarterback ever, I can tell you that.
- 11:57SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: So he had that debate.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: He is, he is.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: He he took some bruises this year uh in the Super Bowl, but he will be back, hopefully, with a healthy O-line and uh keep on competing.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: So we're still rooting for old Patty Mahomes, and for sure.
- 12:12SPEAKER_04: And I mean, and we're all talking about nothing but Americans here, too.
- 12:15SPEAKER_04: So, like literally everyone except for the tennis player was American.
- 12:18SPEAKER_04: So we're better.
- 12:20SPEAKER_04: And he forgot Tiger Woods, too.
- 12:21SPEAKER_02: So T Gray, uh, did you see the uh did you see the HBO documentary?
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: I have not watched that yet.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: It's good, it's really good.
- 12:28SPEAKER_04: Like it goes on the queue.
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: I was I was afraid of the lat like the last dance didn't really get too much into Jordan's bad side, like this really gets into Tiger's bad side.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: It was it was good.
- 12:38SPEAKER_02: We watched it.
- 12:39SPEAKER_04: Heck yeah, but uh I gotta dig into this.
- 12:41SPEAKER_04: I also gotta watch the Jordan one, so yeah.
- 12:43SPEAKER_02: Oh, you haven't seen The Last Dance?
- 12:44SPEAKER_02: No, I haven't.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: Oh, dude, you gotta watch that.
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: Netflix.
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: It's on Netflix, I think.
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: But uh, but okay, but let's move on back to Texas Tech swinging the right direction.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: Uh, we had a couple games this week in basketball.
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: Uh, one winner, one loser, unfortunately.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: Uh, we'll go into the winner first.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: Let's talk K-State first.
- 13:03SPEAKER_02: Um, and this game was kind of it, it wasn't what we expected.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: The line was uh the line had tech winning by 16.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: Uh, we did not win by 16, but we still showed some good stuff, finished off well.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: But throughout the game, it was pretty disappointing, I think.
- 13:19SPEAKER_04: You know, uh I we need to stop saying we expect a blowout because I just I just don't think that's something this team is built to do.
- 13:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so um I think the the only game, I think the only team we've blown out this season in the conference play is I would state.
- 13:32SPEAKER_04: So I think so.
- 13:33SPEAKER_04: I think no matter what, we need to go in expecting a fight, even as fans.
- 13:36SPEAKER_04: So like I wasn't very surprised that it took until late in the second half to really kind of rock it.
- 13:42SPEAKER_04: So that's just kind of seems how we're how we're built.
- 13:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: But there was some good stuff in this game.
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: I mean, I throughout most of the game, I thought you and you and me were kind of looking at Marcus Sanosilva and asking, what the hell?
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: Like, what are you doing, man?
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: This has not been a good start.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: You you haven't played very well.
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: Kyler, kind of the same way.
- 14:01SPEAKER_02: Um, Kyler does some sneaky good stuff uh that we really don't notice that much, uh, that kind of go under the radar.
- 14:07SPEAKER_02: But um, I throughout most of the game, those two we were kind of like, okay, Tyreek's having a great game, you know, let's get Clarence Nedolny a few more minutes.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: And we were kind of wondering why Beard kept putting out, you know, Marcus and Kyler.
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: And really to end the game, they proved Coach Beard proved us wrong and said this is why, because they were great down the stretch.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: I I wrote down four like seven plays between those two guys, in particular in the last like in the second half, late second half, that they just took over.
- 14:36SPEAKER_02: I mean, Kyler had a 5-0 run around the seven-minute mark.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: Him and Marcus Sanosilva, they got together on a uh on a pick and roll, beautiful down the stretch with about two minutes left.
- 14:47SPEAKER_02: Uh Edwards made some great passes.
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: You know, Marcus kept scoring, got a transition dunk, and Edwards got a big steal.
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: So they really proved us why those guys belong on the floor at the end of games, even if they're not really having a good game at throughout.
- 15:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I know for sure.
- 15:02SPEAKER_04: And whenever you're looking at the box score, the stats kind of show a good game, right?
- 15:06SPEAKER_04: From our side.
- 15:07SPEAKER_04: Because you know, we shot 50% from the three and nearly 50% from the field in general.
- 15:12SPEAKER_04: So it's you know, on paper, it looks really good.
- 15:15SPEAKER_04: It's just during the game, it was like, why have we not put these guys away yet?
- 15:19SPEAKER_04: And is it just me, or do we have an issue with that?
- 15:22SPEAKER_04: Do we have a problem with putting teams away?
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think I think it's a mental thing because you get to a little bit of a lead and then you just kind of let them teeter back, teeter their way back into the game.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, the way our playstyle, we just don't we normally aren't gonna be a high-powered offense, and we're focusing more more on our defense.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: So do you think the tempo kind of keeps that from happening?
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think so.
- 15:45SPEAKER_02: I think the tempo keeps it from happening.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: Um, and and it's on us too.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: I think we kind of settle it settle a little bit once we get a uh healthy lead, we just kind of settle down and and then cra credit to them, they made some big shots to get themselves back into the game.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: So uh, but yeah, like you highlighted, the three-point shooting was awesome.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: Uh Kevin McCullough and Kyler Edwards, six of eight from three-point range, even getting guys like Agbo and Burton and Tyreek, even Tyreek Smith made a three-pointer this game.
- 16:10SPEAKER_02: So uh getting a lot of help from from downtown.
- 16:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 16:14SPEAKER_04: And uh while you highlighting some great, great uh stats from those players, you know who just continuing like who had an abysmal game was was PV.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, PV had a bad game.
- 16:24SPEAKER_02: Uh only played uh what he only played about 12 minutes against Kansas State.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: But yeah, zero points, one rebound, two fouls.
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: Uh was for your stat line.
- 16:32SPEAKER_02: Uh not fantastic.
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: Um, he had a better game against West Virginia, I will say.
- 16:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh, but uh K-State, he was he was pretty bad overall.
- 16:41SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 16:42SPEAKER_04: So I go going on the road is always tough.
- 16:45SPEAKER_04: I'm glad we went in there and did it.
- 16:46SPEAKER_04: It's it's still the Big 12, and K-State has been kind of trying to skip trying to scare some other teams before, so we're not alone.
- 16:52SPEAKER_04: And uh obviously the frustration is with this next game.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the yeah, the freshman we didn't mention with K-State, Terrence Chan didn't play the first 25 minutes, shouldn't have really played at all, but it was it was so close that he kind of came in and gave us a little mental boost, and everybody started playing better.
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, talking about West Virginia, man, uh just tough.
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: Uh you know me.
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: I'm and and anybody that's listening to this podcast or anybody that knows me knows that I I hate to blame the refs for everything.
- 17:19SPEAKER_02: I think it's a weak move.
- 17:20SPEAKER_02: I think you know, everything like that.
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: But those refs were bad.
- 17:23SPEAKER_02: And I mean, even Chris Beard showed it.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: Chris Beard, uh, like he said in the in the postgame, he does not get technical fouls very often.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: He's animated and he gets his guys ready, but he never goes at the refs, you know.
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: But he was so upset and so frustrated with how that game was officiated that he got ejected and it was awesome.
- 17:43SPEAKER_02: I mean, he showed it, he showed, and that's the type of thing that really gets your guys ready and and willing to fight for you.
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, man, terribly officiated game.
- 17:52SPEAKER_04: The media loved that, uh all the fans obviously loved it too.
- 17:57SPEAKER_04: So it it's it's it was great, man.
- 17:59SPEAKER_04: And like you said, it's it's just energy in a locker room, you know.
- 18:02SPEAKER_04: That's that's where that's where it starts.
- 18:03SPEAKER_04: So I love Chris Beard getting out there and fighting for his players.
- 18:06SPEAKER_04: That's what he said, and it kind of just reinforced what you're saying, like how he doesn't go after the refs in the postgame.
- 18:11SPEAKER_04: He says, I know what bad officiating, uh bad uh officiating looks like, yeah, and that just seems like something I expected out of Chris Beard.
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: He was even classy about it.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: He said he's like, I you know, the three guys, I know them very well, I like them, they're good refs, but he knows what bad officiating is, and that was bad officiating.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: I mean, Mac McClung's fourth foul was abysmal.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: That there's nothing happened there, and they were calling everything for their big guys, man.
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: Every time Derek Culver got touched down low, they called a foul.
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: So uh a terribly officiated game.
- 18:40SPEAKER_04: Uh over whopping 39 free throws.
- 18:44SPEAKER_04: Just saying no, yeah, every time he touched them, they got went to the line.
- 18:46SPEAKER_04: That's that's what happens whenever they go to the line every time they're touched.
- 18:50SPEAKER_04: A whopping 39 free throws in 29 of them actually gave put points on the board.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's stupid.
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: No, no team should be going to the line 39 times.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: Uh no, and even we got to the line.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: I mean, we shot 20 free throws, and it just, I mean, that's a normal half, dude.
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: I know that's half, and we even went to like shouldn't 20 free throws is like a good amount in a game.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: So we did our job getting to the line, but West Virginia, man, they were getting all the calls, and uh, but there was a lot of other bad that went into this.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: It wasn't all refs.
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: I mean, we played uh pretty terrible.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: Terrence Shannon had a had a bad game.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: Uh, you can tell he's he's kind of struggling.
- 19:31SPEAKER_02: I know he was hurt throughout most of that K-State game.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: Uh, they tried to rest him a little bit, and I I don't know if it's a it's a leg injury, I guess.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: And so he just didn't seem into it in the first half, kind of got a few shots to go in the second half, had that big put back dunk, but three of 14 from the field, one of seven from three, four turnovers.
- 19:48SPEAKER_02: It's just that's just not what you want from uh your one of your best players.
- 19:51SPEAKER_04: No, I was about to say he didn't look too hurt whenever he was putting that dunk in, but you're you're right.
- 19:56SPEAKER_04: For the most part, that was like the most electric play from our side in the game.
- 19:59SPEAKER_04: Other than that, it was pretty quiet, and that's just not something we expect out of arguably the best player on the team.
- 20:04SPEAKER_04: So it's disappointing for uh a game all around.
- 20:07SPEAKER_04: You know, our our three our uh shots from the three was terrible, you know.
- 20:10SPEAKER_04: We were like under 30 there.
- 20:12SPEAKER_04: Not that we're a stellar three-point team, it's just you know, after that K-State game, we we landed half of them.
- 20:17SPEAKER_04: So it was like, where's the accuracy?
- 20:19SPEAKER_04: Where'd that go?
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: Well, and then on the flip on the flip side, West Virginia shot 50 from three-point line.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: So our defense on the perimeter, it hasn't really been good all year, but uh, especially in these two West Virginia games, we just cannot close out on these guys, and and they're taking advantage and credit to them.
- 20:34SPEAKER_02: I mean, this guy McNeil, this white kid, just went absolutely ballistic against us.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: The guy hasn't hasn't scored, he had his career high against us, and that's basically because we didn't close out and we didn't give him the credit that he deserves.
- 20:47SPEAKER_02: He's a good shooter, and we just did not get out on him quick enough, and uh it's disappointing.
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: And then, of course, Deuce McBride having a freaking game against us again, like he did.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, that guy he's he's been great, but uh he he really chooses to go off against us.
- 21:03SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah, it's safe to say that the the Mountaineers got their revenge from football season.
- 21:09SPEAKER_04: You know, they we unfortunately suffer our first sweep this season uh against us, I should say.
- 21:14SPEAKER_04: Um, I I think this is the first time we've been sweet swept by teams in a while.
- 21:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't have this I don't have the exact stat on that, but I mean we play Kansas again.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: I guess we have a chance to get swept against Kansas and then Oklahoma State too.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: I'm not saying it's gonna happen.
- 21:30SPEAKER_02: I'm saying I'm saying we gotta win those games so we don't get swept here because we already took one sweep, we don't need another.
- 21:36SPEAKER_04: And you you were regarding you were talking about earlier that you think that perhaps you really wanted this win because you kind of feel like our seeding is dropping here.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, uh this was a game really this was a game that was really gonna determine if we get like a two to three seed uh in the tournament.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: Um, and uh you know, uh losing one of these isn't good for the resume, obviously.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: We still have some big games that we can.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: win.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: I mean Oklahoma State, Texas, Kansas still on the still on the schedule.
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: So Baylor as well when we ever reschedule that game.
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: But uh, you know, we we could get some good wins uh in the bag and then potentially move up to like a three, four seed again.
- 22:14SPEAKER_02: But right now I think we're on a trajectory probably for a five or six seed in the tournament.
- 22:18SPEAKER_04: Hey we like we like the fight though.
- 22:20SPEAKER_04: That's that's what Chris beard culture is.
- 22:23SPEAKER_04: Um all right man do you have anything else to say about the the Mountaineer game?
- 22:27SPEAKER_04: Because we speaking of wins we got two we need to get here.
- 22:32SPEAKER_02: Yes we'll get into TCU here in a second but uh I did have a couple things left on on West Virginia Marcus had a bad game San O Silva uh for only 14 minutes because he was in foul trouble a lot of the time uh guy swipes too much he gets called and and granted they were calling everything for Derek Culver but there were a few times where Marcus just made dumb plays and and as a senior you can't do that zero rebounds this entire game for your big man not good at all uh you just can't have that fouled out as well Mac McClung is well fouled out uh seven to sixteen from the floor three turnovers not not great for Mac either a rare bad game but uh there was some good things yeah yeah he still scored but uh you know seven to sixteen that's that's not you know fantastic but that's what you get with Mac sometimes uh there was some good things Kyler had a good game 11 points seven boards six assists pretty all around uh one of one of Kyler's best games of the season to be honest uh Jamarius played well off the bench uh Micah Peavy actually you know contributed pretty well uh so you know there were some good things that happened in this West Virginia game unfortunately we just could not get it done uh man I just really wish I could tell you uh John Diver went to Texas Tech which he did he still did way better whenever we're whenever we're winning these games so yeah yeah and at least the game wasn't in Morgantown so they couldn't play that song yeah so uh we're okay on that end but uh you know West Virginia if we see him again in the tournament or the Big 12 tournament who even knows if that's gonna be played now with all these cancellations and speaking of cancellations uh Baylor Texas Tech on Saturday is canceled I'm sure everybody knows about that by now um Baylor has canceled now it's gonna be five games in a row uh because they cannot get it together with this COVID thing but honestly there's a real issue here and I mean no team has had covet issues quite like Baylor this college basketball season I mean three separate occasions during the season where they've had to cancel games I mean they had a game cancel or uh cancel Wicconzaga and Nichols State in early December they had their Texas game Tarleton State postponed in mid-December and then they postponed a uh West Virginia game in mid-January and now they're doing all this I mean five games in a row man you really there needs to be something done about this in my opinion there like this can't go unpunished.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: I mean with the NBA and the NFL and all these guys that are trying to take precautions like this how does your program have three separate cancellations or postponements in your season yeah and this goes beyond Baylor.
- 25:13SPEAKER_04: You know we're really looking at the uh Big 12 tournament being canceled mostly because of Baylor right now.
- 25:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah so and it's that's how is that fair at all to your nine conference mates you know especially for the guys who have a so so resume or a long shot chance to make it into the tournament and the NCAA tournament and that the conference tournament is their best chance to do so you're really not giving them that shot and how's that fair to those students you know we get number one you're number one or two in the nation whatever you know like it kind of it's just a it just like you said there's a problem here and I just kind of feel sorry for the the teams that have the dream of grabbing that tournament trophy or fighting their way into the tournament.
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah and I mean I I think there's a side of this to where you have to think you know is Baylor canceling these games on less or on stricter protocols?
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: So you know they choose to cancel the game because one guy gets COVID.
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: We've seen teams that have had to play without their star players like Oklahoma this season that have had to play without their leading scorer for a lot of these big games one against Texas Tech, one against Alabama.
- 26:18SPEAKER_02: And you know it it say a guy like Jared Butler or Davion Mitchell got COVID and they just decided okay we're just not going to play these games so we can you know keep our perfect record alive and keep this thing going.
- 26:30SPEAKER_02: But uh to me that's wrong.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: I don't I'm not saying that's actually happening.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: They couldn't have a ton of players that just got COVID and they had don't have enough to play or whatever their precautions are but I just think there needs to be something done about this.
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: I I think it's ridiculous to have this many games five they're gonna have five now or I'm sorry six they're gonna have six conference games that have been postponed so uh I you know we put on Twitter that there's only a 10 11 day window between the end of the regular season game or everybody's last regular season Big 12 game and the Big 12 tournament so you can only fit so many games in there man you can't you can't just make them play try to play six games in two weeks and I don't know I think it's uh I think it's something that needs to be needs to be looked at does my memory serve right that Baylor had to postpone games of the football season too um I I don't remember off the top of my head but yeah I think I think there was something about that at the beginning where they had yeah yeah they they either didn't play their non-conference game or they had to postpone it something like that at the very beginning so something's going on at Baylor they're just not they cannot get it together.
- 27:38SPEAKER_04: So they're just such a beloved program in the conference oh yeah yeah this is really you know really tarnishing a a overall very credible play you know team let's just say that I would be okay if Baylor was kicked out of the Big 12 uh let's just say that's pretty much what literally all if all the teams had to take account that's what would happen switch them out for anybody and I'm seriously I don't even care cougars instead yeah I'll take you of h.
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: I don't care just kidd Baylor I'll talk about them just kidding yeah I'll take U of H uh oh Tristan Tristan mentioned BYU and it's a drink but uh literally no me too so uh but yeah man uh I guess the Big 12 tournament uh that's that's something that we need to talk about too because uh that's uh apparently it's still going on uh the Big 12 has announced that they're they're still gonna continue with the tournament um I think it starts on the 10th of March um but the last regular season game Texas Tech has scheduled and really everybody when the schedules came out is the 27th of February I think it's a Saturday um we play Texas at home in Lubbock to end off the season but you know now we have to reschedule this Baylor game now we have to reschedule the Iowa State game that we canceled back in January.
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: So uh you know Baylor's got to reschedule six games now.
- 29:06SPEAKER_02: Uh I know Iowa State and West Virginia have had to reschedule some of these games so um I don't even know if it's it's gonna happen at the Big 12 tournament because we're gonna have so many games that we just need to play.
- 29:17SPEAKER_04: You know as as much as you know I just went on that tangent about you know the Big 12 tournament it's probably for the best if it's postponed or I mean can't you finish off the season.
- 29:27SPEAKER_04: But it's it just I would just wish we weren't in this position.
- 29:30SPEAKER_04: Because it's really frustrating.
- 29:32SPEAKER_02: So you'd rather cancel the tournament and play the rest of the regular season basically you'd rather play the regular season games instead of a Big 12 tournament.
- 29:39SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: I I I want to agree with you I think I do agree with you uh I kind of go back and forth but like you said earlier it and and yeah I know it's a long shot Iowa State Kansas State or TCU actually winning this thing and but if they do win this thing we've seen you know the great I don't know if you've seen survive in advance the 30 for 30 but NC State back when they had Jimmy Valvano as their coach they only made it to the NCAA tournament because they won the ACC tournament.
- 30:06SPEAKER_02: So that was their ticket in and then they ended up winning the whole thing.
- 30:09SPEAKER_02: So I'm not saying TCU is the next NC state or whatever but um I am saying that they don't even get that chance and that's I mean that was my tangent before that it's a great point.
- 30:19SPEAKER_02: I I just I just thought you know it would make more sense because the conference tournament is is is largely not as important as the season yeah you know I I don't care what anyone says I mean there's very few people that would fight this point but the regular season champion is the real champion it's not the conference tournament champion that's the real champion Iowa state so at cyclones at the cyclone fans so but uh yeah yeah either I don't think you're wrong if you're leaning either way I just think it makes more sense to finish out the season but for sure and I mean those are resume boosters if you if you play Baylor you I mean we have a game against Baylor that's canceled that would be a huge resume booster if we win that game and same with Baylor they they haven't played they're gonna have to reschedule a game against Oklahoma West Virginia us I mean Texas from earlier in the season so um you know those are those are potential losses that would kick them out of a one seed and and that's big time man for sure and uh we're looking forward to them uh head and be the next Virginia a few years ago and going out in the first round yeah please please please all right we're getting done with it way ahead of ourselves we have not even talked about our next games coming up so the the uh end of the season is near so we're here we are in the final countdown we're about to head into two games that should be absolutely two dubs against the TCU Horn Frogs this one's been a long time coming since the since the postponement so I hope we're ready to just wreck shop what do you think so far about this game well we'll see we the first one we have on Monday the 15th is at TCU which is basically a home game for Texas Tech fans satellite campus you know TCU's fans they just don't show out at all 7 p.m on ESPN plus uh and then the next game we had to reschedule from our uh our cancel game with T when TCU had covet issues uh we have to reschedule now to Wednesday February 17th that game's gonna be on ESPN too so that's cool um but i you know two straight games against the Hornfrogs man they're they're not very good uh but they are you know I'm gonna put I I said this earlier in the year and it's still it still stands strong.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: Uh Iowa State and Kansas State are the two worst teams by far in this conference.
- 32:29SPEAKER_02: Uh TCU is is almost there with them but they're a step up they're a tier above those two.
- 32:35SPEAKER_02: So they're not they're not a team to kind of just you know just wave off and say it's an automatic dub necessarily they beat Oklahoma State twice this year.
- 32:45SPEAKER_02: They swept the Cowboys and the Cowboys are not bad.
- 32:48SPEAKER_04: I mean you know they they have a pretty solid team over there so TCU has some decent wins on their resume but um you know but like but to that point we should win this game TCU is an inferior team compared to us um Texas Tech we we got to get rolling again man and this is a good a good way to get two straight wins to kind of you know put us back in the right direction yeah just because it's it's not an automatic win doesn't mean it's a a must win for you know in quotation marks you know here we are talking about seeding and uh I I don't I really don't want to see us keep dropping in the into like the the sixes and sevens and eights like you were talking earlier.
- 33:28SPEAKER_04: So we gotta get in here and plus it's just it's a rival school I want to be the horn frogs.
- 33:34SPEAKER_04: So getting a getting another sweep would feel really good after this disappointing being the swept E if that's the word yeah I'd like to go and do the same to the to the rival down the road.
- 33:45SPEAKER_04: So it's it's totally possible our team is so much better we need really need to just you know get our our our bad word together and keep the frogs worth I know our fans will be there so give them a show.
- 33:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah for sure but uh the thing about TCU uh you know along with their two Oklahoma State wins they played Oklahoma they played Kansas and they played number 10 Missouri all tight so they're not a bad team they score a lot they don't play a lot of defense uh guys to look out for when you're talking about the Horn Frogs RJ Nemhard he's a 6'5 junior averaging 16 points a game in Big 12 play Mike Miles uh smaller guy 6'2 he's a freshman 13 points a game in Big 12 play and then their big guy Kevin Samuel 6'11 255 junior experience you know averaging eight and eight in Big 12 play with almost two blocks a game um and and you know those are just the guys to kind of look out for in these next couple yeah so uh where do you where are we winning this game how are we winning this game we're winning this game by not fouling so much and if we and if we do and if we do foul foul kevin samuel he's shooting 28 from the free throw line so beardy check in part two coming in last fine except that's you know it's cool don't foul RJ Nemhard don't foul Mike Miles foul uh foul kevin samuel please um but yeah it's just play our game man get back to this grit and grind Texas tech defense that stops them uh from scoring a ton of points and and you know have offense come to us Terrence Shannon hopefully he's a little healthy he's gonna have six days off uh here well everybody's gonna everybody on this Texas Tex team is gonna have six days off with the Baylor cancellation so um nice time to kind of replenish get healthy uh you know get get Terrence back in his his right state get Mac going again and and you know let's get it rolling all right so if you're saying they're the these offensive oriented team in the Horn Frogs a very run and gun or uh that probably matches well with our grit and grind defense then yeah I mean we just have to make an effort and and stop the stop the freaking perimeter shooting stop the unbelievable three point play that all these teams are killing us with freaking West every team is on fire from three against us we just and and that's partially I mean that's a lot on us man we're not closing out in time we're just letting these guys take these shots and they're hitting them so uh we really got to get out on guys like Nim Hart and guys like Mike Miles but uh force it inside and then foul the hell out of Kevin Samuel and make him earn it from the free throw line.
- 36:17SPEAKER_04: For sure man well I'm hoping we get two and oh here I hope we give enough fans from both sides here from the from our fans in Fort Worth and our fans here in Lubbock.
- 36:25SPEAKER_04: I hope we have plenty to cheer for uh because we need a little happiness after that West Virginia loss.
- 36:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah no doubt and baseball only nine days away I mean we got an unfortunate news with uh Hunter Dobbins is out for the year uh was going to be a big time pitcher for this team uh going into the season but uh you know he's gonna have uh UCL he has a UCL injury so he's gonna have surgery and miss the whole uh missed the whole season for Texas Tech but uh we wish him the best hopefully he gets back to normal and then you know throws the ball like he did.
- 36:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah for sure really disappointing because apparently he was in uh in the talks for the MLB draft so that's that's really disappointing to have that kind of talent um injury himself for both the team and himself his future so that that that that's that really sinks for him but I'm sure we have plenty of depth to uh to fill in his spot I know we keep saying that for baseball but I hope this is the last time we have to say that but I'm really excited man I mean I'm I'm excited to get another tech sport in the mix here so uh we don't just have to talk about basketball anymore.
- 37:24SPEAKER_04: Um and this is a team that's really shaping out to be freaking awesome because pretty much every ranking has us in the top five.
- 37:30SPEAKER_04: So opening day ought to be a lot of fun.
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: Yes it will and we'll probably go into that more next week as it'll only be a like two days from that point next week uh when they start their season so we'll give you a little TTU baseball look ahead uh next week but yeah man I think I I mean unless you had anything else I I have nothing I think that'll wrap up this 5050 week up cool cool well shout out shout out Texas Tech University 98th birthday I saw today happy birthday to the University of Texas Tech what are you a recruit are you a football recruit I'm a football recruit I'm an I'm a 17 year old football recruit I hate it when they do that me too dude I'm happy to receive a an offer from the University of Texas Tech and another another little pet peeve about people talking about Texas tech is when people just put TT yeah why is it so hard to put the U just TTU or T tech I don't like that either yeah or T tech yeah yeah I don't like that either like I know there's other techs but put TTU or put Texas tech.
- 38:40SPEAKER_04: That's just what we are the other come on you you you finish pretty much anyone else you can't put the last you we do TT literally no one in the Texas tech fan base says TT.
- 38:49SPEAKER_02: Also also if one more media personality mistakes us for Texas AM I'm gonna freaking lose it I am going to lose it every graph I like every other graphic it's so bad you know so it's so bad.
- 39:04SPEAKER_02: I mean I will gladly be mistaken offensive ones yeah I'll gladly be mistaken for their football program the last few years hey relax I will I will just say that we did it we we got an AP vote for the top five we finished in the top five according to one guy I'm gonna sit here here in my ditch with Texas Tech football I would never trade anything for what AM has never ever are you sure absolutely I'm gonna die down here in my little ditch of listen listen the history the history I will absolutely stick with Texas Tech the last two years I don't know I might not be there though no we're not we're not losing listeners they would do the same thing and it's literally just the place that we finish at the end of the year.
- 39:51SPEAKER_04: So let's finish top five let's do that next season let's mess around and finish top five why are you gunning for top five let's let's mess around and finish with a winning record let's mess around let's mess around and win the national championships big dream we're doing a who needs baby steps when he can just step around and win the national championship Baron Morton is the new Trevor Lawrence where he wins the national championship as a true freshman calling it right now Nick Saban goes into retirement after losing to Texas in national championship you're like describing a dream I had the other day oh that's a great dream it was a great dream we won the national championship of football we could all dream we could all dream but we'll get there one day we're talking about football again dang it I know we always we always end up doing it enough all right let's get off football let's get off tech sports tristan what is your song of the week all right so my song of the week is this new band that just got going last year um led by a a name that people know in the Texas country circles Zayn Williams it's called the Wilder Blue the Wilder Blue um and the song I'm gonna go roll with from them is Dixie Darlin.
- 41:11SPEAKER_04: Man they it's like a Texas bluegrass their harmonies their instrumentals the songwriting it is just phenomenal I see this band becoming one of my faves they are so good.
- 41:22SPEAKER_02: Dixie Darling did you find what you left a greener pasture a wilder blue fantastic I don't know if I can ever get behind a Zane ever since he horrifically left One Direction.
- 41:40SPEAKER_04: But is this isn't the same guy right if if you put him side by side picture form you'd probably be like is that the same guy are we talking about the same zane right now so I could see where the confusion would come from okay well well I'll have to check him out and see if he does better country music than he does pop music.
- 41:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah no we're we're we we this is an anti-Zane podcast anti-Zane this is a pro-Nile podcast big Nile guys big big one direction guys is gonna be well one direction song we'll we'll do it sooner we'll do it soon enough my song of the week is uh humility by the gorillas featuring George Benson I have not i've i've kind of swayed a little bit more towards country i'm trying to get a little different uh this one with the gorillas they're obviously a uh uh a multi-genre band they kind of do a little electronic a little rock a little rap here and there but uh humility is a great song it's a good smooth jam to bump to just a good just a good song man that's my song of the weekend all right man i think you and I hit each other with brand new songs we've never heard so i'm excited to see what what comes of that yeah man give it give it a listen uh and and we have great suggestions so you uh by the way we now have a playlist on spotify and apple podcast with our songs of the week all from episode one down so uh it even includes uh uh Kyle and and Travis's songs of the week when they were on the podcast uh and hopefully we'll get some new guests here on soon so we can get some more variety in here absolutely man you got any shouts out for everybody no my only shout out was for Texas Tech happy birthday to uh the university uh it's the best university on the planet absolutely all right y'all I think that'll do it for us that's gonna do it man you can follow both me and Tristan on Twitter Tristan is at Tristy Mick I am at L underscore S underscore Rodriguez the pod is on Twitter at talking tech pod send us some mailbags send us some feedback send us whatever you want talking tech pod at gmail.com and uh that's gonna do it so always wreck them tech wreck em tech uh wow first of all uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan uh their program tough guys just uh a lot of fun yeah I just want to congratulate Steven and Tristan on another great podcast they were everything we thought they would be um we have a lot of respect for their program we have such a high opinion of them I want to congratulate them I just want to tell Steven and Tristan thanks for coming out the energy uh was really really good in there today you know we fed off of it I think it goes back and forth tremendous uh great job and um you know just just proud of our guys for the way they responded
