Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: We're back.
- 0:03Speaker 2: It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster
- 0:06and voice of the Texas Longhearts Craig Way.
- 0:19Speaker 3: Earlier, we had told you that the announcement was made
- 0:23today that the Texas Georgia gain would kick off at
- 0:31six thirty pm on Saturday the nineteenth. And so what
- 0:37I had done was just repost the tweet that came
- 0:41off of x from Texas Football. So Texas versus Georgia
- 0:45on October nineteenth, we'll kick off at six thirty pm,
- 0:47just you know, letting people naturally, somebody has to chime in.
- 0:50Let's take care of business at two thirty on Saturday. First,
- 0:53no joke, just letting people know the time has been announced.
- 0:58Speaker 1: That's all. That's all.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Nobody's getting ahead of anything. Nobody's putting cards before horses
- 1:06and all that other kind of stuff.
- 1:08Speaker 1: So there.
- 1:09Speaker 3: So baseball is underway Game two of the Division series
- 1:16the Tigers and the Guardians. Cleveland won Game one on
- 1:19Saturday seven and nothing. It is scoreless bottom of the first.
- 1:23Derek Scuball pitched so well for Detroit against the Astros
- 1:27in Game one of that Wildcard series is on the mount. Yeah,
- 1:31I'm having the same problem you were having earlier cam
- 1:34about the signal getting through it.
- 1:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's just on TVs. So for those
- 1:40trying to watch Tigers Guardians, try a True TV, Craig, Yeah,
- 1:45the channel used for the NCAA tournament that people forget
- 1:49we have. And then okay, I gotta watch, you know,
- 1:52I gotta watch Saint Mary's against Tennessee. Yeah, it's on
- 1:55True TV.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, yeah, all right, so keep people post on
- 2:01that and again next hour, Geene Watson joins us to
- 2:04talk about the Division Series in Major League Baseball. Let's
- 2:08hear some more from Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian Sark
- 2:12from the news conference here on our Longhorns Monday presentation
- 2:16Broady Alive here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone,
- 2:20and Sark was asked about an update on his running backs,
- 2:26in specific Jayden Blue and Trey Wisner. And I think
- 2:32it was our friend Danny Davis from the Austin American
- 2:34Statesman who asked this question.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Saying that.
- 2:38Speaker 3: I wanted to see more from Jaden during the week
- 2:46coming off the game against Misissippi State with the two
- 2:48fumbles at the time Sark said he had no confidence
- 2:52issue in Jane Blue. He thought he would be fine.
- 2:54He bounced back to work fine, and Weisner also would
- 2:58continue to run well. So this was hal Sark addressed
- 3:00the question about jayden blues work and Trey Wisner's during
- 3:04the open date.
- 3:05Speaker 5: I thought they had a good week. I thought Jayden
- 3:07practiced really well. I thought he never mind the ball.
- 3:10I thought, just you know, guys coming off of an
- 3:12angle injury and sometimes you're limited in practice leading up
- 3:15to a game. But he looks really healthy, He's practicing fast.
- 3:19Feel very comfortable with him. Both those guys are going
- 3:22to play in the game, and I feel comfortable with
- 3:24either one of them in the game that we can
- 3:26execute and do things that are really high level.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Okay, all right, So there was that, and then other
- 3:32questions that he addressed from the news conference included the
- 3:40somebody asked him we had at last hour about were
- 3:45there things to be taken, lessons to be gleaned for
- 3:50his football team watching from AFAR over the weekend as
- 3:56five of the top eleven ranked teams in the country
- 3:59all took defeats, and he addressed that, and then someone
- 4:03asked the question what about facing Oklahoma, and remember last year,
- 4:09the Long Words lost to the Center thirty four thirty.
- 4:11They beaten them forty nine nothing the year before that.
- 4:14So Sark was asked, were there lessons to be taken
- 4:17from last year's defeat.
- 4:19Speaker 5: Well, I think it reinforced the value of the football.
- 4:21The turnovers really hurt us in that game. I think
- 4:24it reinforced why it's important to score touchdowns in the
- 4:27red zone. We were in the red area three times
- 4:29and scored a total of three points. And I think
- 4:32it reinforced the value of you know, really playing good
- 4:36situational football, you know where where we didn't execute very
- 4:40well on that last drive on defense and we gave
- 4:42up a couple blown coverages that led to ultimately a
- 4:45touchdown to beat us. And so there's some valuable lessons
- 4:47in that game that I think we value in our organization.
- 4:52But again, when when they're highlighted in real time and
- 4:55what it looks like and then you can go back
- 4:56and touch on them, hopefully that that reinforces why we
- 4:59prepare the way that we do so that we can
- 5:01negate maybe some of those things that occurred in last
- 5:03year's game.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Okay, so last year was last year announced this year,
- 5:07and they're facing a completely different young man at quarterback
- 5:09for Oklahoma. It's not Dylan Gabriel this time, who's now
- 5:13playing his trade and skills for the Oregon Ducks. By
- 5:17the way, they have a pretty big game of their
- 5:18own this Saturday and Eugene against Ohio State, and I
- 5:22think that's where ESPN College Game Day is headed. As
- 5:25I predicted last week that might be the case, because
- 5:28I said, if they go out there, they've got Oregon
- 5:33in Ohio State, and if Texas is able to defeat
- 5:36Oklahoma and Georgia wins its game, then he got Texas
- 5:40Georgia and they can be in Austin the next week.
- 5:42I think that probably will be the plan, especially with
- 5:45the six thirty now six thirty primetime kickoff. The Tennessee
- 5:48Alabama game will be the afternoon game, and in those
- 5:51games that were announced, so now they prepare for a
- 5:56true freshman in Michael Hawkins, and Sark was had for
- 6:00his thoughts on Hawkin's skill set and at Oklahoma quarterback run.
- 6:05Speaker 5: Well, I think we, you know, we have to spend
- 6:08time on their scheme, you know, in the quarterback running
- 6:10the football in their scheme as a reality, whether it
- 6:12was Jackson earlier in the season or now with Michael Hawkins.
- 6:16So the quarterback's going to run and run at some point,
- 6:19whether it's designed runs or they both have the ability
- 6:23to tuck it and run. So it's not that we
- 6:24have to adjust necessarily for two different styles within the
- 6:28scheme of the player. I think what Michael Hawkins does
- 6:31is he does provide that element of yeah, they can
- 6:34throw it, they can run it with design runs. But
- 6:37his first touchdown there against Auburn was a pass that
- 6:40he tucked it and took off and ran.
- 6:41Speaker 1: And so that's.
- 6:43Speaker 5: Where we've got to be, you know, really cognizant of
- 6:45him in the pocket that, yeah, we want to try
- 6:48to get to the quarterback, but our rush lanes are
- 6:50really critical in this game because when he pulls it,
- 6:52it's not to get four or five or six yards.
- 6:54I mean, he went fifty for a touchdown against Auburn,
- 6:56So we got to be really mindful of his ability
- 6:59to stendon plays and then create explosives with his legs.
- 7:03Speaker 3: All right, So was that Then Sark was asked a
- 7:08question about energy, juice, excitement, the drive and how he
- 7:20wants to see it happened on the practice field before
- 7:23they ever get to a ball game, that if they
- 7:26have it in practice, it can translate into the game.
- 7:28So he was asked, how does that happen in practice?
- 7:31How does he see his guys bring that kind of energy.
- 7:33Speaker 1: I look for energy. I look for intent, you know.
- 7:36Speaker 5: I think our energy at practice, especially from some of
- 7:39our leaders, is really important. You know, I was talking
- 7:42to somebody earlier. I was thinking about our secondary with
- 7:45John A. Baron, Jalen Gilbot, Manny Mohammad, Michael Taff. These
- 7:50guys provide a lot of juice in practice, Like that
- 7:53group has got a lot of personality about them that
- 7:56I think kind of permeates throughout our team. And so
- 7:58sometimes you never know where it's going to start and
- 8:01who kind of are those guys. But our secondaries kind
- 8:05of the energizer bunny to me, you know, they're the
- 8:07ones that kind of spark a lot of what we
- 8:09do and bring that energy that way, and I think
- 8:12is a good thing.
- 8:13Speaker 1: So that's the first part I look for.
- 8:15Speaker 5: The second part is intent, if they're really understanding what
- 8:18we're trying to accomplish in certain periods in practice, and
- 8:21then executing them in a way, communicating in a way,
- 8:25talking about things in a way that that feels like
- 8:28they're engaged. And those two things I think are kind
- 8:31of really important to us, especially for me, you know,
- 8:35because it's easy. You can go to practice and go
- 8:37through the motions and it can kind of look okay,
- 8:40And we never want to go through the motions. We
- 8:42want to make sure that we're really intentional with the
- 8:43work that we're doing, but yet doing it in a
- 8:46facet in a style that is ours and that's definitely upbeat, energized,
- 8:51and kind of a lot of positive energy, if that
- 8:53makes sense.
- 8:54Speaker 1: All right.
- 8:55Speaker 3: Next came a question about how his depth at linebacker
- 8:59is really showed itself out during the first five weeks
- 9:03of the season and on the team, the depth overall
- 9:07being a big factor.
- 9:08Speaker 5: I think overall totality of the team. We've played a
- 9:11lot of players this season, and it's shown to be
- 9:16beneficial to us that we have played a lot of
- 9:19people and played a lot of players. And you know,
- 9:21I think one of the challenges for us as coaches is, yes,
- 9:24we want to put our players, our best players in
- 9:26position to be successful throughout the ball game, but the
- 9:30mindset needs to be to do that. Maybe you need
- 9:32to spell them earlier in the game so that they
- 9:34are can be at their best late in the game
- 9:36in the fourth quarter. And so hey at linebacker, we're
- 9:39fortunate we've been playing five guys. There really a good
- 9:43four man rotation, but we've been playing five with Anthony
- 9:45and Leonga, David Bendemo Blackwell and to Anthony Smith. We've
- 9:50also implemented more defensive personnel groupings and so we've been
- 9:55going to dime a lot more where we've even taken
- 9:57one of those guys off the field and played with
- 9:59anx extra dB on the field. So all that being said,
- 10:02hopefully we can be more fresh late in the game.
- 10:05And because fresh doesn't mean always physically, I'm in the
- 10:08best position, but I think mentally it can take its
- 10:10toll when you're when you're worn down, So we want
- 10:12to stay fresh. We're at our best when we're a
- 10:14fresh football team. Football team, and you know that'll be
- 10:17the goal against Saturday.
- 10:18Speaker 1: All right.
- 10:19Speaker 3: We also know this is a very emotional game. It
- 10:23carries its own emotional baggage, and Sarka has always said
- 10:29he wants his team to play with emotion but not
- 10:31play emotionally. There is a difference. And he talks a
- 10:35little bit about the mood swings and the way the
- 10:37game can go and how it can affect you both
- 10:40positively and negatively due to your emotions.
- 10:44Speaker 1: It's fascinating.
- 10:45Speaker 5: I think nine of the last ten years this game
- 10:47has been decided by one score, and so to think like,
- 10:52whatever happens in this game early on is just gonna
- 10:55that's the way it's going to go is probably not
- 10:57a reality.
- 10:58Speaker 1: And we've been on it multiple ways.
- 11:01Speaker 2: You know.
- 11:01Speaker 5: Our first year, we jumped out to a really big
- 11:03lead and they came back and got us. The next
- 11:06year we kind of ran away with that game. Last
- 11:09year we fell behind, we came all the way back
- 11:11to take the lead, and then ultimately they went down
- 11:13to score at the end to beat us. And so
- 11:15I think that the key to this drill to me
- 11:18is emotions run high in games like this, and most
- 11:21notably in this game. And I'm not here to deny
- 11:25that our players won't have some emotions in this game,
- 11:27and I think they deserve that they should have it.
- 11:30The key is not to cross over that threshold where
- 11:32we get emotional. And I felt like in last year's game,
- 11:36we got a little emotional at times. You know, we
- 11:38had an unsportsmanlike conduct after the block punt for the touchdown,
- 11:41one of our players took his helmet off. That's uncharacteristic
- 11:44for us. And so I want to make sure that
- 11:46we stay true to who we are. That we do
- 11:49have emotion, and there's nothing wrong with that, but we
- 11:51fight the urge to get emotional. So I think when
- 11:54we get emotional, that's when some of those those types
- 11:56of things happened that that can cause caused put us
- 12:00in a position that maybe might not be unsuccessful with.
- 12:03So that's what I'm looking for, and that's what kind
- 12:05of I'm preaching to throughout the week to get ourselves
- 12:08in the right frame of mind for Saturday at two
- 12:11forty nine or whenever we kicked off.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll mean whenever that is. It will be right
- 12:14around that time. And then another thing he was asked
- 12:16about was the fact that and I mentioned this last segment,
- 12:21all of their remaining opponents on their schedule, the ones
- 12:25who played Oklahoma didn't play, but the other ones who
- 12:28played all lost during the during the I mean all one,
- 12:33excuse me, they went perfect during the weekend, the one
- 12:37the one Oklahoma did not play, but all the ones
- 12:41who did play won their games. And Sark was asked
- 12:44about the difficulty of the second half of this season
- 12:47coming up in conference play, and.
- 12:50Speaker 5: This is to take nothing away from anybody we're playing,
- 12:53but I really focus on us. You know, so much
- 12:55of what we do with our team. The opponents just
- 12:59give us what need to prepare for. But the way
- 13:02we prepare is really about us. And I use the
- 13:04adage know be ingamored with us. You guys have heard
- 13:06me talk that way, and I think this team really
- 13:09understands that. And again that's to take nothing away from
- 13:13the people we're playing, but we're going to dictate how
- 13:16we play Saturday, not not the opponent. And so we
- 13:19really try to focus on what we need to do.
- 13:22Like I said, we're fortunate that we get to play
- 13:24a heck of a schedule and we've got really good games,
- 13:26not only this weekend, but as the season the season
- 13:28goes on, there's going to be adversity that strikes for
- 13:31multiple teams, including ourselves, and how we respond to that
- 13:34is going to be critical. So that's that's kind of
- 13:38where our mindset is it's really not so much about
- 13:41what other people do. It's about what we do and
- 13:43how we prepare, and so that's really not changing for us.
- 13:46Speaker 3: All right, So there's sarchs thoughtson that. We're going to
- 13:49hear more from head coach Steve Sarkisian coming up next hour.
- 13:52We'll have some other college and pro football notes coming
- 13:55up here on sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone
- 13:57of the iHeartRadio app.
