- 0:08Speaker 1: Well, in the words of Madonna, we made it through
- 0:10Speaker 1: the wilderness. Somehow, we made it through. Didn't know how
- 0:14Speaker 1: hot it was until I found you.
- 0:16Speaker 2: March. We are here. It is autumn.
- 0:18Speaker 1: We've made it through the shittiest month of the year
- 0:20Speaker 1: in terms of hair control. But also netball is back
- 0:25Speaker 1: this month.
- 0:25Speaker 3: We are two weeks away.
- 0:26Speaker 2: It is March.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Suncorp Super Netball season starts in two weeks. It is
- 0:30Speaker 1: now entirely appropriate people to be starting to eat hot
- 0:33Speaker 1: cross buns. It's a great time of year. It's like
- 0:36Speaker 1: Christmas for netballers.
- 0:38Speaker 2: You're here.
- 0:39Speaker 1: This is No Dribble.
- 0:40Speaker 4: Let's get into it.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to No Dribble, the podcast where we
- 0:57Speaker 1: talk about netball, but we talk.
- 0:59Speaker 2: About so much more.
- 1:00Speaker 1: My name's Carolyn Twendell, and I'm here again with my
- 1:02Speaker 1: two fabulous pals.
- 1:04Speaker 2: High Cap Cox here and Liz Ellis.
- 1:07Speaker 3: And I made sausage.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Drills last night, so good, you know, well, so desperate
- 1:14Speaker 2: for one after last week's episode. So you know how
- 1:17Speaker 2: we had to record early because I had to leave
- 1:18Speaker 2: and go and do something ring home. I rushed home
- 1:23Speaker 2: via a bakery.
- 1:27Speaker 3: The whole way home to the baker, rushing home and
- 1:31Speaker 3: via a bakery. Actually don't go hand in hand. You
- 1:34Speaker 3: can do one or you can do the other.
- 1:36Speaker 2: The Pacific Highway ran through an arcade to where I
- 1:39Speaker 2: knew there was a bakery and ran in there. They
- 1:42Speaker 2: had sold out, honestly, if they could have read the
- 1:47Speaker 2: expression on my face, I.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Mean as the Key Week commentators are often heard saying
- 1:55Speaker 3: that is devastating.
- 1:58Speaker 1: And just remind him both through and I were born
- 2:00Speaker 1: in New Zealand, so we are allowed to take the
- 2:02Speaker 1: piece out of New Zealand. And I grew up in
- 2:04Speaker 1: queens A and allowed to take the piece out of Queensay.
- 2:06Speaker 2: I'm sure we can take the piece of them anyway,
- 2:08Speaker 2: can't we. Well, it's just the aussy thing.
- 2:12Speaker 3: It's my birthright. I was born in Western Sydney and
- 2:15Speaker 3: it is my birthright to take the piece out of
- 2:17Speaker 3: KIWI'SI surely all right.
- 2:19Speaker 1: I'm glad we've established that no crazy onance will be
- 2:21Speaker 1: entered into Thank you, the entire country of New Zealand.
- 2:24Speaker 2: We do love you. I'd just like to query it
- 2:26Speaker 2: we do things. In your initial intro, Oh okay, we
- 2:29Speaker 2: made it through the wilderness. I thought you were initially
- 2:32Speaker 2: talking about the technological dramas that we have in vulnerable week.
- 2:36Speaker 2: If I earned five minutes this morning.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Barely functioning at the moment this was, I was getting
- 2:41Speaker 1: to the point where it's like, I don't know, I've
- 2:43Speaker 1: just run out of stuff, and we did. It's literally
- 2:46Speaker 1: every week we have something different and we never really
- 2:49Speaker 1: work out what it is, and then somehow, through me
- 2:53Speaker 1: wildly pressing buttons, something works and we go great, just
- 2:56Speaker 1: we go now. And today I said, I'm just going
- 2:59Speaker 1: to get it new laptop and try that and suddenly
- 3:02Speaker 1: it works. You still, yeah, and I suspeak off the course,
- 3:09Speaker 1: I wouldn't love it if that was the case. If that,
- 3:11Speaker 1: if it was something to do with me having been
- 3:14Speaker 1: sitting on a cable or something, I would I would
- 3:16Speaker 1: love that.
- 3:17Speaker 2: I don't know. Oh, I'm so stressed. That's okay, though
- 3:22Speaker 2: a little bit dribblers off, but I'll put it online
- 3:25Speaker 2: for you might have to be. And the other thing,
- 3:28Speaker 2: you said, it's perfectly acceptable to eat whole gross bums. Now, yes,
- 3:31Speaker 2: what was wrong with me having one on Boxing Day?
- 3:34Speaker 3: Well, because you're a freak, yes that is.
- 3:36Speaker 2: It's so.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Now you've got your Christmas trees going up in about August.
- 3:40Speaker 1: By the sounds of things hot, criss Catherine, you're wishing
- 3:43Speaker 1: your life away. Come on, just just be in the moment.
- 3:46Speaker 1: So the record show I haven't had an Easter egg yet, though.
- 3:50Speaker 3: Well that is self control, I am.
- 3:52Speaker 2: I'm all about control.
- 3:53Speaker 3: I actually think that after Easter, like between Easter, so
- 3:57Speaker 3: between April and August. What do you get excited about?
- 3:59Speaker 3: Is that your head so far into netball that I'm
- 4:02Speaker 3: at that.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Point getting my Halloween costume?
- 4:06Speaker 1: Well, no, you're not, because you bought it on the
- 4:08Speaker 1: first of November. Because as soon as Halloween's over, you
- 4:11Speaker 1: buy the next year's costume, don't you.
- 4:13Speaker 2: But that was a train wreck anyway, that's a whole
- 4:15Speaker 2: nother story.
- 4:16Speaker 3: So I had a whole other story.
- 4:17Speaker 2: I don't know how many people did have sausage rolls
- 4:19Speaker 2: this week, though, So.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Did you end up getting very good?
- 4:22Speaker 2: No? And I was so I was literally I dribbled
- 4:26Speaker 2: down my chin all the way. I was really cranky.
- 4:30Speaker 2: It's just not a happy ending anyway.
- 4:32Speaker 3: You've had to wait up a week to had some. Yeah,
- 4:34Speaker 3: so I made my own last night. But I actually
- 4:37Speaker 3: I made a mistake. I used short crust pastry instead
- 4:41Speaker 3: of puff and then I finished one packet because I
- 4:44Speaker 3: made a double sort of batch. And then when I realized,
- 4:49Speaker 3: I thought, oh, I could unroll all of these because
- 4:51Speaker 3: I hadn't put them in the oven, and I could
- 4:52Speaker 3: redo them. And I thought, nah, the kids won't notice.
- 4:55Speaker 3: And they did not notice. So there's your handy.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Hin.
- 4:58Speaker 3: You put enough tomato sauce on your sausage. It doesn't
- 5:00Speaker 3: matter if it's short crust or puff pastry.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Just not very good. I've never made Have you ever
- 5:05Speaker 2: made pastry? Now?
- 5:07Speaker 4: Well?
- 5:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I have for a pie, but not for a
- 5:09Speaker 3: sicage roll. You have couldn't make puff pastry. I could
- 5:12Speaker 3: make short crust. I'm not great at it though, you
- 5:15Speaker 3: know you see all the how do you do?
- 5:17Speaker 4: What?
- 5:17Speaker 3: Why would you do it?
- 5:18Speaker 2: Yeah? Challenge something quite matter.
- 5:21Speaker 3: I think I might have wanted to make a pie
- 5:24Speaker 3: and I didn't have any pastry, and I live half
- 5:26Speaker 3: an hour out of town, so I kind of stuck
- 5:28Speaker 3: to the shops and buy pastry. But I've always got
- 5:30Speaker 3: flour and butter, so you can always make pastry.
- 5:36Speaker 2: So can I?
- 5:37Speaker 1: Just I know that this isn't things that make you
- 5:39Speaker 1: go mmmm. But I feel like I'm among friends here,
- 5:41Speaker 1: and while I'm dealing with frustrations off the week women's
- 5:46Speaker 1: active wear, so the bras can we I don't care
- 5:51Speaker 1: the cup inserts in or out, I don't care, but
- 5:54Speaker 1: stitch them in if we're going to have them. I
- 5:56Speaker 1: do not have time every time I want a sports
- 6:00Speaker 1: bra to have to try to readjust the pad things
- 6:05Speaker 1: in them. Like you're looking at me as though this
- 6:08Speaker 1: is not a crisis that the world needs to be
- 6:10Speaker 1: dealing with it at the moment.
- 6:11Speaker 2: I'm looking at you like a sister who understands. Oh,
- 6:14Speaker 2: thank you, I appreciate this. I'm out all together. Yes,
- 6:17Speaker 2: And then you put it on, realizing one must be
- 6:19Speaker 2: in the bottom of the washing machine. You got one
- 6:21Speaker 2: perky boob and one that's just still and it's big.
- 6:25Speaker 1: One nipple that's showing you what the temperature in the
- 6:28Speaker 1: room is, and the other one's or discreet. Oh good, okay,
- 6:34Speaker 1: thank you. I'm glad that we can go to the
- 6:35Speaker 1: barricades together on that one, because I'm just like every
- 6:39Speaker 1: it's a daily thing, so seriously, why do I have
- 6:41Speaker 1: to deal with this?
- 6:42Speaker 3: Is that fair enough?
- 6:44Speaker 2: Sports for us?
- 6:45Speaker 3: Though?
- 6:45Speaker 2: And you're active? Were just in yet? Yeah? So yeah,
- 6:47Speaker 2: in what I'm hearing is you do too much exercise.
- 6:50Speaker 2: That's a daily problem.
- 6:51Speaker 1: CrossFit Open this week started this week. I have to
- 6:54Speaker 1: tell you, I'm very look first week of the CrossFit Up.
- 6:57Speaker 1: So CrossFit Open is a global competition and everyone goes
- 7:00Speaker 1: into it. Ultimately, what happens is then the top twenty
- 7:03Speaker 1: five percent go through to the quarterfinals, then there's the semifinals,
- 7:07Speaker 1: and then they ultimately go to the CrossFit Games. But
- 7:09Speaker 1: you know, there's hundreds of thousands of people who do
- 7:12Speaker 1: this and I this week's workout is the worst possible
- 7:15Speaker 1: workout that it could be for someone returning from a
- 7:18Speaker 1: miniscus injury. But I made it through. I did a
- 7:21Speaker 1: slow version. I managed to keep my act together and
- 7:24Speaker 1: not go healthful leather. I managed to keep focused on
- 7:27Speaker 1: the fact that I'm still rehabbing returning from this injury.
- 7:31Speaker 1: My score was okay, it was not terrible. So it's
- 7:35Speaker 1: wall ball, So you take a six kilo ball down
- 7:38Speaker 1: into the bottom of a squad and then you have
- 7:40Speaker 1: to throw that to a target on the wall which
- 7:42Speaker 1: is at nine feet what I and then a lot
- 7:46Speaker 1: of box jump over so the box is twenty inches.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Everything comes out of the us so they don't use
- 7:52Speaker 1: proper metrics and things, so it was a lot of
- 7:55Speaker 1: those and I did one hundred and fifty four reps,
- 7:57Speaker 1: which is not is not great. It's not as good
- 8:01Speaker 1: as in my past years. But for someone like I
- 8:04Speaker 1: was not several months ago able to do a squad
- 8:07Speaker 1: or a burpie box jump or a box jump over,
- 8:10Speaker 1: I'm quite happy about it.
- 8:11Speaker 2: When you say, like a deep squad, Yeah, how do
- 8:13Speaker 2: they measure that?
- 8:14Speaker 1: You've got to coat so you're the crease of your
- 8:16Speaker 1: hip has to be below your knee. So oh my god,
- 8:20Speaker 1: you did one hundred what one hundred and fifty four
- 8:23Speaker 1: so it was like one hundred crawl balls. Look, I'm
- 8:26Speaker 1: pleased with her. Rachel Air is former Supernipple umpire who
- 8:31Speaker 1: has now retired from that and is just destroying it
- 8:33Speaker 1: in CrossFit. She'll probably be over two hundred for this,
- 8:36Speaker 1: so it's not you know, it's this is not me.
- 8:39Speaker 1: But the saddest thing is I put my score in
- 8:41Speaker 1: and because you get you have a judge and they
- 8:43Speaker 1: sign off his score and I put my score in
- 8:45Speaker 1: and I thought, yes, okay, I'm in the sort of
- 8:47Speaker 1: top twenty percent worldwide. Twenty five percent will go through
- 8:50Speaker 1: to the But then I found did I found the
- 8:52Speaker 1: score sheet? Went, oh, it wasn't one hundred and fifty
- 8:54Speaker 1: six one hundred and fifty four. So thus those two
- 8:56Speaker 1: reps have dropped me a lot down. But anyway, so
- 8:59Speaker 1: that's my weekend, and I had a lot of struggling
- 9:02Speaker 1: with active wear tops and cups, and hence I thought
- 9:05Speaker 1: I would bring it to my therapy group before for destension.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Hey, well done you that that is really impressive. Oh,
- 9:12Speaker 2: thank you very If I have to think about doing
- 9:14Speaker 2: even two of those right now, I think i'd struggling. Well,
- 9:17Speaker 2: let's the ball.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Be honest, it's a lot further down for you to
- 9:22Speaker 1: do a squad, but then to get the ball up
- 9:25Speaker 1: to nine feet it's probably easier. But I think squatting
- 9:28Speaker 1: is more in my wheelhouse than in yours.
- 9:30Speaker 2: It's done you. How do you feel about a burpie? No,
- 9:33Speaker 2: I don't like that.
- 9:34Speaker 3: Oh, just true, we cot coke.
- 9:38Speaker 1: I'll not like burpies, but I think that's because it's
- 9:40Speaker 1: a short person exercise.
- 9:42Speaker 3: Hang on, that is not a sentence. That is so incorrect.
- 9:47Speaker 3: I quite like burpies.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Well, it's relative to other craps.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Said no, whatever? Said no? One over five foot six.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Plenty a short before.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Yeah, so it is. It is a short person's exercise
- 9:59Speaker 1: that one.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Now did you say you were judging as well? Yeah?
- 10:02Speaker 2: What were you judging?
- 10:02Speaker 1: So other people doing the workout? So for the CrossFit
- 10:05Speaker 1: Open fear score, you have to have a judge. So
- 10:07Speaker 1: that means so within that workout there were another ten
- 10:10Speaker 1: or so war balls I did who might and might
- 10:12Speaker 1: judge said no rep meaning that I either wasn't deep
- 10:15Speaker 1: enough in the squad or the ball didn't connect on
- 10:18Speaker 1: the wall where it had to, or it didn't get
- 10:20Speaker 1: hight or whatever. And Pete and I won't judge each
- 10:24Speaker 1: other in the CrossFit Open anymore because it really is
- 10:26Speaker 1: when you've got someone else judging it, you act like
- 10:28Speaker 1: an adult when it's your spouse.
- 10:30Speaker 2: I did so, yeah, totally, And I mean, I'm surprised
- 10:34Speaker 2: they even allow that, because surely they let some pass it, don't.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Look, I think at my level of the sport, it
- 10:40Speaker 1: kind of doesn't matter. I'm not going to be bumping
- 10:44Speaker 1: anyone out of a spot at the CrossFit games. But
- 10:46Speaker 1: just from an integrity perspective, it's better. But also from
- 10:48Speaker 1: marital harmony perspective, let's not judge out the things would
- 10:52Speaker 1: be my advice.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Well, let's not judge them at that sort of stuff.
- 10:55Speaker 2: We can judge them in the household. Yeah, absolutely, come absolutely.
- 10:59Speaker 2: But you went to this season launch yesterday.
- 11:01Speaker 3: I did.
- 11:02Speaker 2: It was lovely and they did it really really well yesterday.
- 11:05Speaker 2: So it's also the thirtieth year of the Swift which,
- 11:09Speaker 2: oh my goodness, to know what I keep thinking. You
- 11:12Speaker 2: go back to that pivotal moment in two thousand and
- 11:17Speaker 2: seven into two thousand and eight were they discussing whether
- 11:21Speaker 2: to change the name, and because they did, we get
- 11:24Speaker 2: to celebrate thirty years of the Swifts.
- 11:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:26Speaker 2: If they had changed that, like the Phoenix did to
- 11:28Speaker 2: the Vixens, they lose all that history.
- 11:31Speaker 1: So I just think it did swat from Sydney Swift's
- 11:34Speaker 1: to New South Wales Swift.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Didn't it still the Swifts. So what they actually did
- 11:37Speaker 2: yesterday it was really cool. When they announced all the
- 11:39Speaker 2: players up onto the stage to get their dress. They said,
- 11:42Speaker 2: Helen Howsby, for instance, red Swift number blah blah blah,
- 11:47Speaker 2: Yellow Swift number bladder. That's great. Everybody has a dual number,
- 11:51Speaker 2: which is really cool. So they acknowledged the history of
- 11:53Speaker 2: the Swifts, but they did it yesterday with all the
- 11:56Speaker 2: members present, so it was a member's day. Oh okay,
- 11:59Speaker 2: I Foundation members from ninety seven got up and were
- 12:02Speaker 2: able to introduce the Swifts onto stage. So they had
- 12:05Speaker 2: a member do all the introductions for the plan. Oh
- 12:08Speaker 2: that's so. It was really cool. There was a stack
- 12:10Speaker 2: of people, the stands full at Nettie Central and they
- 12:13Speaker 2: had all the flags up, obviously the premierships, and the
- 12:16Speaker 2: funniest thing was they had all the trophies there we
- 12:18Speaker 2: won across the years. And Brady and I were chatting
- 12:21Speaker 2: before we had the ceremony and stuff and talking about
- 12:25Speaker 2: the twenty twenty four trophy. Elizabeth, do you know how
- 12:28Speaker 2: we left that one in the nightclub being King's Cross
- 12:34Speaker 2: after some celebration.
- 12:36Speaker 1: And did you ever get it back? Have to be replaced?
- 12:38Speaker 2: We got reminded the next morning. Well, our manager said, oh, guys,
- 12:44Speaker 2: where's the trophy And we all just looked at each
- 12:46Speaker 2: other and realized we.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Did not have the fat that's so bad.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Trophy did not make it out of the nightcloud everywhere
- 12:54Speaker 2: we'd been and anyway, it was still in this nightclub
- 12:57Speaker 2: in the Cross. But you had to backtrack. It was
- 13:00Speaker 2: like gym parlors and it was jack and there.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Was no like we didn't have mobile phones and right,
- 13:07Speaker 3: so you couldn't look at photos and go, oh that's
- 13:09Speaker 3: where we were. Yeah. Yeah, it was like you had
- 13:12Speaker 3: to remember. And I think it was like the Dragonfly
- 13:15Speaker 3: Club or something like that.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Yeah, the last place the trophy. So we were chatting
- 13:19Speaker 2: about this story and then we went over to look
- 13:21Speaker 2: at the trophy.
- 13:22Speaker 5: It looks like it's been a few rounds of black
- 13:24Speaker 5: tis that one horribly one. It's all scratched, it's got
- 13:30Speaker 5: like the tip, you know how it was like some netballers,
- 13:33Speaker 5: but they were kind of you know whatever abstract is.
- 13:36Speaker 3: It's a bit sharp at the top.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Yeah, sharp endings at the top. One of them was
- 13:39Speaker 2: kind of chipped at the top. I was like, oh no, that's.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Oh, that's fantastic. I didn't go yesterday and I regret it,
- 13:47Speaker 1: but I needed to have a nap. And the reason
- 13:51Speaker 1: for that was Saturday night. I went to a dinner
- 13:52Speaker 1: party and it was all people who've got kids a
- 13:56Speaker 1: bit older than mine. But this one couple there who
- 13:59Speaker 1: I've only met recently, we were talking about it. They've
- 14:02Speaker 1: got a brand new fridge, and they said they've had
- 14:05Speaker 1: the same fridge for like twenty years or whatever, bought
- 14:07Speaker 1: this brand new kind of very exciting, top of the range,
- 14:11Speaker 1: double door bower. Their daughter, who I think is about eighteen,
- 14:15Speaker 1: came out of the pool, skidded on the floor, and
- 14:18Speaker 1: her massive frank green water bottle sort of stopped her
- 14:21Speaker 1: fall into the fridge, and so there's two huge dents
- 14:25Speaker 1: in the fridge within a week. Now they're making her
- 14:29Speaker 1: replace the door. I said, I reckon. That actually just
- 14:33Speaker 1: liberates you a little bit. Once you've got the damage
- 14:36Speaker 1: on the new car or the new fridge or whatever,
- 14:39Speaker 1: you can stop worrying about it.
- 14:41Speaker 2: But yeah, totally, I don't know what you reckon. Would
- 14:44Speaker 2: you be pissed if it was within a week? Get
- 14:47Speaker 2: where they're coming.
- 14:47Speaker 1: And those bloody frank green bottles, it's like a Sherman
- 14:51Speaker 1: tank in your hands.
- 14:52Speaker 2: We won't have a scratch on it. Yeah.
- 14:59Speaker 3: Looks like if I got a white shirt, you get
- 15:01Speaker 3: your first state on it and you're like, oh, well,
- 15:03Speaker 3: I might'st wearing it now.
- 15:05Speaker 1: I'm relaxed. Now, I'm readily relaxed in it.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Send that my way.
- 15:09Speaker 3: I'll sort that out.
- 15:10Speaker 4: For you.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Yes, I'm sorry I missed that, but I did. I
- 15:12Speaker 1: did have a really nice nap.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Would I would take the nap afternoon nap on a Sunday,
- 15:18Speaker 2: above and beyond most things.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Something exciting that happened on the weekend, And this is
- 15:24Speaker 1: I will remind you that last year as my Christmas
- 15:28Speaker 1: present request, I said, please can we get a Lisa
- 15:31Speaker 1: Hilly on the podcast sometime?
- 15:32Speaker 2: Or she's now retired.
- 15:34Speaker 1: She's played her last game on the weekend, scored one
- 15:37Speaker 1: hundred and fifty eight runs and one Day International in
- 15:39Speaker 1: high bart against India. She has won eight World Cup titles,
- 15:43Speaker 1: six in two t twenty six one Day internationals, Countless
- 15:47Speaker 1: moments when she stood tall when the pressure was greatest,
- 15:50Speaker 1: leading from the front as captain after meet Landing stepped
- 15:52Speaker 1: away one hundred and seventy runs against England in the
- 15:55Speaker 1: twenty twenty two World Cup, most dismissals in international women cricket,
- 16:00Speaker 1: Like what a bloody legend. And I think that if
- 16:05Speaker 1: we ever can't have Liz and we've got a tricky
- 16:07Speaker 1: goat question, I reckon Alisa Healing might have a fair
- 16:10Speaker 1: claim to a title as a ghost.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, And she's a good chick to boot
- 16:16Speaker 2: And there's nothing better is there when you meet those
- 16:18Speaker 2: people that are such icons of any sports, such heroes, and.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, they're just a great human. Well, I'm
- 16:25Speaker 1: not going to let this go. You've promised me. I
- 16:27Speaker 1: don't know whether you actually did, but I made the
- 16:29Speaker 1: request anyway.
- 16:31Speaker 3: Yeah. Look, I think anyone who loves her head off
- 16:33Speaker 3: at Catherine Fainting is outstanding. So she's awesome.
- 16:37Speaker 2: She's a dribbler in her heart. Do you know what else?
- 16:40Speaker 2: So we share a lot of wardrobe at Fox and
- 16:44Speaker 2: so she was doing some of the cricket and she
- 16:46Speaker 2: sent me a photo and she was holding up the
- 16:48Speaker 2: back of a shirt that had my name on it,
- 16:51Speaker 2: Kath Cox. And she's like, look, it's nice shirt this
- 16:53Speaker 2: And I said, yeah, she goes, but I'll censor it.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Bloody hell. The arms a lot. How tall is she?
- 17:02Speaker 2: She can't share a lot of your place. Tiny, So
- 17:05Speaker 2: she had the sleeves rolled up. I was like, nah, ma,
- 17:08Speaker 2: your arms are just too short. Yeah. So she's just
- 17:11Speaker 2: a funny, funny, funny thing as well. So yes, we'll
- 17:13Speaker 2: put her on the list. Top of the list. Irene
- 17:15Speaker 2: Van Dyke with the hilly.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Yep, done, yep, very good, Thank you. I appreciate that. Well,
- 17:21Speaker 1: the promise needs to be fulfilled. Question though, was Paige
- 17:25Speaker 1: there yesterday and will she be taking the court in
- 17:27Speaker 1: two weeks time?
- 17:29Speaker 2: No, no, I would be supressed. She actually wasn't there.
- 17:31Speaker 2: I thought she would be there with new baby Tally.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Congratulations, Yeah, congrats, that's exciting.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Fine.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Like I was looking at these photos and my ovaries
- 17:40Speaker 1: are aching.
- 17:41Speaker 3: It's like, Oh, she's perfectly formed, isn't he?
- 17:44Speaker 2: He's beautiful, He's perfectly formed. Yeah, well it's done on
- 17:49Speaker 2: your perfectly formed child. You when you saw your babies,
- 17:55Speaker 2: was it count fingers and toes?
- 17:56Speaker 4: No?
- 17:57Speaker 3: No, I can't remember. But I was just thinking, like
- 17:59Speaker 3: like I looked at pages, I looked at Tully, and
- 18:01Speaker 3: I thought, gosh, he's perfectly former. Was I look back
- 18:03Speaker 3: at photos of my kids with our babies, so I'm like,
- 18:06Speaker 3: they weren't that cute when they were babies. They're really
- 18:08Speaker 3: cute now. But I don't know. They both had this
- 18:11Speaker 3: curly hair and it was I don't know, I don't know,
- 18:14Speaker 3: but the first thing when I saw my kids, did
- 18:16Speaker 3: I count their fingers and toes?
- 18:17Speaker 2: No?
- 18:17Speaker 3: I did not oh I did.
- 18:19Speaker 1: I just I just assumed i'd have a I'd be
- 18:23Speaker 1: notified if there was anything wrong.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Yea someone pulling you aside and saying, can we just
- 18:29Speaker 2: have a quick word. Yeah, it's about your child's digits.
- 18:35Speaker 1: This one's come out flipping the bird. An attitude problem
- 18:39Speaker 1: on your heads here, absolutely no doubt. Congratulations page and
- 18:44Speaker 1: you know, no rush. But when you're ready, she'll be back.
- 18:49Speaker 2: She will. She'd as well she can have that one
- 18:52Speaker 2: stadium to get them to go and have the baby
- 18:54Speaker 2: in the first place. So I can't imagine.
- 18:56Speaker 3: She's still doing like agility work at eight months.
- 18:59Speaker 2: She's a I think everything because she wanted the quick
- 19:02Speaker 2: turnaround to get back, So I suspect she'll be back
- 19:05Speaker 2: soon enough. Whatever that looks like for a new mum.
- 19:09Speaker 1: Well, we should talk about netball and we will have
- 19:11Speaker 1: a little break and then we'll have a quick netbook segment.
- 19:13Speaker 1: But I will tell you that the PCYC where our
- 19:15Speaker 1: summer comp runs. You know how, there's like twenty two
- 19:18Speaker 1: different sports on there, and all the lines are different colors.
- 19:22Speaker 1: This shits me to tears. The netball lines, the transverse lines,
- 19:26Speaker 1: and the center circle are red. All of the other
- 19:28Speaker 1: lines are blue clearly because they went let's do every
- 19:31Speaker 1: other sport first and then went, oh, now we've got
- 19:34Speaker 1: a problem, and it's.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Like so shoddy, so shoddy. The last thing you need
- 19:40Speaker 2: is confusion over lines.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Maybe we should have a things that make me go
- 19:45Speaker 1: this week because I've got a lot of shift to
- 19:46Speaker 1: get off my liver today that the women's sports where
- 19:49Speaker 1: and the lines as the netball cork Liz, we've lost you. Well,
- 20:14Speaker 1: while we're waiting for Liz, why don't you and I
- 20:16Speaker 1: have a chat about the games on the weekend. So
- 20:19Speaker 1: Thunderbird's and West Coast Fever played two games, one in
- 20:22Speaker 1: Calgooli and the other one in Perth, I think, but
- 20:24Speaker 1: they're both in the West. Thunderbird's seventy two West Coast
- 20:27Speaker 1: Fever fifty eight, Thunderbird's seventy West Coast Fever sixty one,
- 20:32Speaker 1: and they've lost Livy Wilkinson.
- 20:34Speaker 2: This is a devastating this close to the season and
- 20:37Speaker 2: it is ankle yeh ligaments. Hopefully that's not too long out. Yep,
- 20:43Speaker 2: it does mean though she's probably not going to be
- 20:45Speaker 2: right for round two. That's a couple of weeks away.
- 20:48Speaker 2: But I mean The good thing is you've got the
- 20:50Speaker 2: likes of a Beckford. Yep, be really well, she's at home,
- 20:55Speaker 2: I'll be from Jamaica, but she knows the side. I
- 20:57Speaker 2: don't think she's signed with anyone else. Not sure of
- 21:01Speaker 2: that though, don't quote me, but I mean you could
- 21:03Speaker 2: certainly get her back in the interim period, or you've
- 21:05Speaker 2: also got Alice teag Neil that could certainly fill the void.
- 21:08Speaker 2: They've certainly got some other talent wa that could pull
- 21:11Speaker 2: in to fill that void as well for a couple
- 21:13Speaker 2: of weeks. But it looks like it's going to be
- 21:14Speaker 2: any longer. Then you might have to look at getting
- 21:16Speaker 2: a Sheenise Beckford or somebody back if she is available.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Yeah, so you said it looks like she won't be
- 21:22Speaker 1: back for round two. Why did you say specifically round two?
- 21:25Speaker 2: Round two? Maybe I meant round one? Did okay? Yeah? Yeah, okay,
- 21:28Speaker 2: all right, So it looks like she wouldn't be back
- 21:29Speaker 2: for round one.
- 21:30Speaker 1: But this is interesting because I think it might have
- 21:33Speaker 1: been when you were away a couple of weeks ago
- 21:34Speaker 1: that Liz and I were talking about this and we
- 21:36Speaker 1: had a question, you know, what, what does Alice tig
- 21:39Speaker 1: Neild have to do. Does she need to change positions
- 21:42Speaker 1: or whatever. And you know Liz was just talking about,
- 21:44Speaker 1: you know, her advice to Alice t Neild is the
- 21:46Speaker 1: same advice that it would be to a twelve year
- 21:48Speaker 1: old who'd just been dropped. That it's like, you got
- 21:50Speaker 1: to control what's within your control and you don't know
- 21:52Speaker 1: what's coming around the corner. And this might be the
- 21:54Speaker 1: classic example of well, here's your this is your Latanie Wilson,
- 22:00Speaker 1: this is your opportunity where to dominate those positions or
- 22:03Speaker 1: to you know, to try something that's a little bit different,
- 22:06Speaker 1: present your case as a goal attack.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Well, it's true because if you get down to an
- 22:10Speaker 2: oltenil the Georgie Horges, Algie's got the ability to play
- 22:13Speaker 2: in the circle. That's probably one of the few things
- 22:15Speaker 2: sets her apart. So if Alice can do that, take
- 22:18Speaker 2: advantage of that in the first couple of rounds. If
- 22:20Speaker 2: that's what it looks like, it's you know, we're going
- 22:22Speaker 2: to be without Olivia Wilkinson. Why would you not.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Absolutely, I just feel for them. It's it's like the
- 22:30Speaker 1: Giants last year that they just seem to get slapped
- 22:33Speaker 1: a bit, just bad luck after bad luck after bad
- 22:36Speaker 1: luck and then Julie pulls out this hail Mary idea
- 22:40Speaker 1: of getting Casey Corpua back, and it was and it
- 22:43Speaker 1: sort of really changed their season, you know. And I
- 22:47Speaker 1: guess that that's what they're having to look at over
- 22:49Speaker 1: in the West at the moment, is that it's like,
- 22:51Speaker 1: what are the what are the things that we can
- 22:54Speaker 1: do here that aren't aren't band aid solutions but actually
- 22:58Speaker 1: are kind of okay, well, this means our strategy changes,
- 23:01Speaker 1: and here is the here is the positive strategy.
- 23:04Speaker 2: What about the Thunderbirds though, if we talk about sides,
- 23:07Speaker 2: they beat the West Coast fever obviously. I think they've
- 23:09Speaker 2: won every one of their pres every one of their
- 23:11Speaker 2: prevason scores have been big scores too. They are going
- 23:15Speaker 2: to be a real threat this season. Playing the Swifts
- 23:19Speaker 2: round one in Adelaide, You are I both going to
- 23:21Speaker 2: be there? We are both going to be there. I
- 23:22Speaker 2: think about doing my tips and I'm already like, oh,
- 23:25Speaker 2: I know, yeah you for that one. Yeah, well tough.
- 23:28Speaker 1: I've tipped the Thunderbirds for that one. But I do
- 23:31Speaker 1: think are they peaking too early?
- 23:34Speaker 3: You know?
- 23:35Speaker 1: It's like this is a this is It'll be interesting
- 23:38Speaker 1: to see can that be sustained through It's now it's
- 23:43Speaker 1: now sixteen weeks until the finals, so two weeks until
- 23:46Speaker 1: we start the season and then fourteen weeks and it's like,
- 23:49Speaker 1: this is a really interesting time to be so dominant,
- 23:52Speaker 1: isn't it.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Well, it's a bit similar to the Swifts last year
- 23:54Speaker 2: and that they went through the first out the season undefeated. Remember, however,
- 23:58Speaker 2: if you think about the Thunderbirds peaking to early stealing Humphrey, not.
- 24:01Speaker 3: Back to fall absolute last yet.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Yeah, they've only just got their Aussie players back, so
- 24:05Speaker 2: Georgie Horges and Tillie Garrett yea, So they haven't had
- 24:10Speaker 2: a whole heap of time in the Thunderbirds environment. Likewise,
- 24:13Speaker 2: Vanderberg she's been playing internationals with South Africa as well,
- 24:16Speaker 2: so and also the Jamaican girls lit Latania Wilson. So
- 24:19Speaker 2: in terms of the Adelaide Thunderbirds actually in their team together.
- 24:23Speaker 1: I know it is. It is really interesting. That's why
- 24:26Speaker 1: I sort of hesitate to say, have they peaked too early?
- 24:28Speaker 1: Liz is back and we're talking about the Thunderbirds. Hello, Liz, Hello,
- 24:32Speaker 1: I don't know what happened. They're just living in the country.
- 24:34Speaker 1: I don't know if it's my internal if it's my laptop.
- 24:36Speaker 3: But either way, I'm back.
- 24:37Speaker 2: But we're in suburbia and we've had all sorts of
- 24:40Speaker 2: issues as well, but we're all back together. We're just
- 24:43Speaker 2: talking about Thunderbirds dominance already pre season.
- 24:46Speaker 1: And I'm wondering if they're doing a warratas so the
- 24:49Speaker 1: new South Wales wartas in the Super Rugby camper always
- 24:51Speaker 1: the premiers in round four and better one one premiership
- 24:56Speaker 1: in twenty five years, and it's like, you know, there's
- 24:59Speaker 1: a lot of reason to think that the Thunderbirds can
- 25:01Speaker 1: sustain this for all the reasons that you have said,
- 25:04Speaker 1: but it's like a I don't believe we've seen from
- 25:09Speaker 1: all of the other teams how they're going to start
- 25:12Speaker 1: the season. I think there has been a lot of
- 25:14Speaker 1: sort of yeah, shifting around and experimentation. It's not to
- 25:17Speaker 1: say with Thunderbirds haven't been doing the same, so you know,
- 25:19Speaker 1: we'll see. I don't know anything about tipping obviously.
- 25:21Speaker 2: How many times are you allowed to flip a coin
- 25:23Speaker 2: with your tips per week? As many as you like
- 25:27Speaker 2: as many?
- 25:28Speaker 1: So the tipping comp registrations are a live go to,
- 25:31Speaker 1: not dribble dot com dot A. You do not miss out.
- 25:33Speaker 1: This is going to be super fun. And the way
- 25:37Speaker 1: that the weekly prizes work, and in fact the overall prize,
- 25:40Speaker 1: is that you gain a benefit from lodging your tip earliest.
- 25:46Speaker 1: So I like to wait and do it when I've
- 25:49Speaker 1: nearly forgotten each week.
- 25:50Speaker 2: I like to.
- 25:52Speaker 1: But there is a real advantage in fact, maybe even
- 25:54Speaker 1: going and doing all your tips now, even if you
- 25:57Speaker 1: intend to go back and revise them, because you know,
- 25:59Speaker 1: if they're one that you go, I'm going to leave
- 26:01Speaker 1: that exactly as it is, then you can do that.
- 26:04Speaker 2: But it's got to be something for going with your
- 26:06Speaker 2: gut to yeah, I reckon, Yeah, yeah.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Anyway, it's going to be a tough season to tip now, Liz. Yes,
- 26:12Speaker 1: I'm going to repeat my question because we lost you
- 26:15Speaker 1: in the middle of your wonderful response earlier on, and
- 26:19Speaker 1: so this is more work for Alex, our lovely producer
- 26:22Speaker 1: who edits this. But I'm going to ask the question
- 26:24Speaker 1: again these I've seen some stuff in the ABC recently
- 26:29Speaker 1: about some very poor behavior or allegations of extremely poor behavior,
- 26:33Speaker 1: and by poor behavior, i'm talking, you know, up to
- 26:36Speaker 1: sexual assault and the like. So it's not just sort
- 26:38Speaker 1: of mischief, is it is actually legal issues from these
- 26:44Speaker 1: coming out of a club in Victoria, which is a
- 26:46Speaker 1: combined football netball club. Now, obviously, if these sorts of
- 26:52Speaker 1: allegations were coming out, we're not just talking about sexual assault,
- 26:55Speaker 1: but also just just netball being treated like the poor
- 26:58Speaker 1: cousin and the players who are playing netball not being
- 27:01Speaker 1: given the same sort of resources and respect that the
- 27:04Speaker 1: football players have. Now, I'm just interested from a governance
- 27:08Speaker 1: perspective what Netball Australia or Netbull Victoria's relationship would be
- 27:14Speaker 1: with these combined clubs, because obviously it's different from just
- 27:18Speaker 1: a netball club where clearly if there's going to be
- 27:21Speaker 1: that sort of behavior, there's a complaint mechanism and then
- 27:25Speaker 1: the full force of Netball Victoria would come in. What's
- 27:29Speaker 1: your understanding of these combined clubs.
- 27:32Speaker 3: It's interesting, isn't it.
- 27:33Speaker 5: So?
- 27:33Speaker 3: The footing netball clubs are clubs that exist all across
- 27:37Speaker 3: Victoria in particular, and they're really important for social gatherings
- 27:41Speaker 3: and that sort of stuff. But some of these allegations,
- 27:44Speaker 3: and it's on the AVC website, out of a club
- 27:47Speaker 3: in Victoria, the Harrow Football netball club and the AVC
- 27:51Speaker 3: did some stories about the conviction of two men from
- 27:55Speaker 3: that football club who were convicted of the rape of
- 27:57Speaker 3: one of their friends at a So it's pretty heavy
- 28:01Speaker 3: stuff and ABS I've gone in and done a heap
- 28:04Speaker 3: of investigation about it. And the thing that's that sort
- 28:07Speaker 3: of really sort of caught my attention as I was
- 28:10Speaker 3: reading through it. There were some allegations about about the
- 28:14Speaker 3: treatment of the netball team, and the netball component is
- 28:18Speaker 3: club and you know, apparently or allegedly a senior club
- 28:22Speaker 3: official asked a netballer to instruct her players not to
- 28:25Speaker 3: make false allegations because they can ruin young men's lives.
- 28:29Speaker 3: So it's the sort of thing that actually, yeah, things
- 28:32Speaker 3: that make you go hm, things that make you go radio.
- 28:35Speaker 3: So I was I sort of read it with a
- 28:39Speaker 3: little bit of alarm, and then you know, there was
- 28:41Speaker 3: some there's some stuff there about drinks being spiked, and
- 28:44Speaker 3: then you go down to it's awful. It's really it's horrific,
- 28:48Speaker 3: horrific allegations and particularly if the behavior like it's just awful, right,
- 28:53Speaker 3: it just makes you like it just made my stomach clench,
- 28:57Speaker 3: and there was like, you know, and then it even
- 28:59Speaker 3: got to the point where they was allegations about that
- 29:02Speaker 3: the women there was sewerage on the netball courts. No,
- 29:04Speaker 3: it's tired, we'll just play around it. You'll be fine.
- 29:06Speaker 3: But as soon as thes like kangaroo coop on the
- 29:09Speaker 3: football field, everything had to be sort of moved. So
- 29:12Speaker 3: it's sort of like again that the netball has been
- 29:15Speaker 3: treated as second class citizens. And then I spoke to
- 29:18Speaker 3: someone this week who's had some involvement in some of
- 29:21Speaker 3: these clubs, and they're like, oh, look what the like
- 29:24Speaker 3: this is trivial, but it actually just shows how bad
- 29:27Speaker 3: it is at some club. Now, some clubs are fantastic,
- 29:29Speaker 3: and so you don't want to paint all clubs all fully.
- 29:32Speaker 3: Football clubs like this and sub clubs actually do it
- 29:35Speaker 3: really well and look after both both sports pretty equally.
- 29:39Speaker 2: I'm sure most clubs do do.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, but then you hear the ones that don't,
- 29:44Speaker 3: and you go, oh my god, like this. Someone told
- 29:45Speaker 3: me recently about a club where on a Saturday afternoon
- 29:49Speaker 3: they handed out the player of the day for the
- 29:51Speaker 3: football team and the player of the day for the
- 29:52Speaker 3: netball team, and the player of the day for the
- 29:54Speaker 3: footy team got a parami or a parma what are
- 29:56Speaker 3: they say, Victoria, parmajana, whatever it is, and the all
- 30:00Speaker 3: play got half a PARMEI right, So it's like, okay,
- 30:06Speaker 3: that's just a little example like that, but did get
- 30:09Speaker 3: me thinking about, like about the governance of it. And
- 30:12Speaker 3: the thing is that the footy netty clubs are actually
- 30:15Speaker 3: they're independent of both Netball Victoria and of the AFL,
- 30:18Speaker 3: right because they're their own I think they're their own
- 30:20Speaker 3: bas so interesting. I rang Netball Victoria just to find
- 30:24Speaker 3: out because I thought we might have some dribblers who
- 30:27Speaker 3: may have experienced this sort of behavior. And I thought,
- 30:29Speaker 3: if you're in a footing netball club and you have
- 30:31Speaker 3: experience of this, what can you do? And also was
- 30:34Speaker 3: wondering what had happened about this particular the harrow A
- 30:37Speaker 3: b our Moral Football Netball Club. And I found that
- 30:41Speaker 3: netbor Victoria has offered counseling and counseling support to the
- 30:44Speaker 3: netballers involved with that club and they're trying to get
- 30:47Speaker 3: some details about what has gone on so they have
- 30:50Speaker 3: a better understanding. They did tell me that there are
- 30:53Speaker 3: some really fantastic leagues that have had some issues in
- 30:57Speaker 3: the past and they've basically done a really great job
- 31:00Speaker 3: in cleaning things up, and so this is really just
- 31:03Speaker 3: a small number, but they did say that if you
- 31:06Speaker 3: have are in a situation where you feel like this
- 31:09Speaker 3: has happened to you, where you you know, there's there's
- 31:13Speaker 3: the treatment is not great, you know wherever it sits
- 31:16Speaker 3: on the scale, even though you don't you don't sit
- 31:19Speaker 3: within officially within Netball Victoria. If you if you're in
- 31:22Speaker 3: that footing netball club environment, you can still detail what's
- 31:26Speaker 3: happened to you through the Netball Victoria web page and
- 31:30Speaker 3: just search for their integrity processes and you can start
- 31:33Speaker 3: to detail what happened and it's a confidential reporting process,
- 31:37Speaker 3: but it will then allow them to start to provide
- 31:39Speaker 3: you or your team with resources and help so that
- 31:42Speaker 3: you can either resolve the situation or potentially move elsewhere
- 31:46Speaker 3: to plan. And I know that's difficult when you're in
- 31:48Speaker 3: a regional area or a rural area like I live regionally.
- 31:51Speaker 3: SI understand it's not easy sometimes to change. But there
- 31:55Speaker 3: are resources available to you. So you know, my first
- 31:59Speaker 3: response to this was to get really angry, and then
- 32:01Speaker 3: I thought, well, no, there must be resources. So that's
- 32:04Speaker 3: sort of where I went. So if you vote with
- 32:08Speaker 3: your feet and you do leave a club because of
- 32:11Speaker 3: this behavior, eventually, you know, change has to happen. So
- 32:15Speaker 3: don't think for a second that there's nothing available to you.
- 32:18Speaker 3: Even if you're not registered with Netball Victoria or through
- 32:21Speaker 3: a Netball Victoria association, still go in report something and
- 32:24Speaker 3: then they can start to offer you some services and support.
- 32:27Speaker 2: Because the last thing we want is for players to
- 32:29Speaker 2: stop playing because they're feeling unsafe for whatever, in those
- 32:33Speaker 2: environments that are meant to be you know, a great
- 32:35Speaker 2: Saturday Sunday afternoon.
- 32:36Speaker 3: Yeah, and if you don't feel like you can speak up,
- 32:38Speaker 3: there are people who can speak up and deal with
- 32:40Speaker 3: things on your behalf. That's probably the most important thing.
- 32:43Speaker 3: So yeah, it was something that just oh man, I
- 32:47Speaker 3: actually read this article and if you haven't read it,
- 32:49Speaker 3: it's on the ABC just just go the ABC website.
- 32:51Speaker 3: It made me so angry to think that that women
- 32:55Speaker 3: try to play netball have to put up with this
- 32:57Speaker 3: sort of this behavior.
- 33:00Speaker 1: In this day and age. Thinking the appropriate thing for
- 33:04Speaker 1: me to say to this young woman who is saying
- 33:07Speaker 1: that someone else has that someone has sexually assaulted her.
- 33:11Speaker 1: The appropriate thing for me to say is for me
- 33:13Speaker 1: to ask all of the women not to make false
- 33:15Speaker 1: allegations against the men. It's like, how clueless are you?
- 33:19Speaker 1: Like how what type of bubble or void are you
- 33:23Speaker 1: living in that you think, oh, this is the appropriate
- 33:25Speaker 1: response in this moment.
- 33:27Speaker 3: And you know the thing that I also have, a
- 33:30Speaker 3: thing that actually gave me a bit of heart out
- 33:32Speaker 3: of this, was when you read the ABC article. It
- 33:34Speaker 3: says that a senior club official asked a netballer to
- 33:37Speaker 3: instruct her players not to make false allegations because they
- 33:41Speaker 3: can ruin a man's life. To her credit, she actually
- 33:44Speaker 3: didn't pass that on, so she didn't go to her
- 33:46Speaker 3: plays and say don't do it, so, you know, and
- 33:49Speaker 3: I think she might have suffered some repercussions because of that.
- 33:52Speaker 3: So and then you know, these women made allegations to
- 33:54Speaker 3: the club after a club function that their drinks are
- 33:57Speaker 3: being spiked, and the club called all the football and
- 33:59Speaker 3: network players together and said, don't spike each other's drenths
- 34:02Speaker 3: and shake hands again? In what world is that?
- 34:06Speaker 2: Wow?
- 34:07Speaker 4: Is this appropriate?
- 34:08Speaker 3: I was like, I can't believe I'm even reading this, Like,
- 34:11Speaker 3: how does that even happen?
- 34:13Speaker 1: But I think the key takeout here is that although
- 34:16Speaker 1: these clubs sit outside the governance processes of AFL and
- 34:20Speaker 1: netball by being the hybrid, that the sport is still
- 34:23Speaker 1: there to support you. So if you are playing in
- 34:27Speaker 1: a club where you have behaviors go on that are
- 34:31Speaker 1: not appropriate and are not creating a safe space, go
- 34:35Speaker 1: to your state netball association.
- 34:37Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, and you can report it just through the
- 34:39Speaker 3: website and start an integrity process. And even though this
- 34:43Speaker 3: state association can't investigate that club because they don't fall
- 34:46Speaker 3: under their auspices, they can still start to offer you
- 34:48Speaker 3: and your teammates and your clubmates support and any services
- 34:51Speaker 3: that you need. So that's really important as well. And
- 34:54Speaker 3: you know, speaking of netball Victoria, they're really keen to
- 34:56Speaker 3: ensure that all netballs are safe, regardless of where registered.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Ye. Yeah, thank you far out.
- 35:04Speaker 2: What a bloody story.
- 35:05Speaker 3: I know I was, you know, and I didn't actually
- 35:08Speaker 3: think carefully about whether we would talk about it, right
- 35:11Speaker 3: because this is a pretty lighthearted podcast. But I just
- 35:15Speaker 3: think it's one of those things that like, when something
- 35:18Speaker 3: like that affects club netballers, and you know, all of
- 35:21Speaker 3: us are involved in club netball, it's in some way
- 35:24Speaker 3: shape or form like you sort of have to talk
- 35:27Speaker 3: about it. You have to shine a light on that
- 35:30Speaker 3: sort of appalling behavior. But I think he also goes
- 35:33Speaker 3: back to you.
- 35:33Speaker 1: You were telling us a couple of weeks ago how
- 35:36Speaker 1: Vicki Wilson was told by an administrator in the sport
- 35:38Speaker 1: you're getting too big. We're not going to make a
- 35:40Speaker 1: big deal out of your hundred games. It's like, how
- 35:43Speaker 1: long do women have to be, you know, putting up
- 35:46Speaker 1: with this type of Why is my phone ringing?
- 35:48Speaker 3: It's been on my phone.
- 35:53Speaker 1: So maybe the sausage rolls are ready or something. Well
- 35:56Speaker 1: let's hope though, Sorry, what a disaster today has been.
- 36:00Speaker 1: Let's just go about there and see if we can
- 36:03Speaker 1: get back on track. Back on track, baby, Sorry, Alex,
- 36:06Speaker 1: just more good times for you. But feel free to
- 36:08Speaker 1: leave that one in. I think that's actually quite funny
- 36:11Speaker 1: that my phone rang right in the middle of the
- 36:13Speaker 1: thing that's meant to be recording.
- 36:14Speaker 3: Okay, rings during a record you actually everybody drinks.
- 36:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's fair enough. That's fair enough. And lunch,
- 36:22Speaker 2: we'll put it on the list.
- 36:23Speaker 1: I've already look, lunch is ready. The credit card is
- 36:27Speaker 1: ready for me to buy the lunch. We just need
- 36:29Speaker 1: to gather here.
- 36:31Speaker 2: Well, that's no fun. I'd like to just pay you
- 36:33Speaker 2: out until okay, yeah, fair enough.
- 36:35Speaker 3: We don't want you to be ready, we want you
- 36:37Speaker 3: to be reluctant. That's funnier.
- 36:39Speaker 2: Yeah, can we lose that on Ammer every week?
- 36:42Speaker 1: Just taking the subject off me for a moment, Liz,
- 36:46Speaker 1: I know something got on your goat this week with
- 36:49Speaker 1: the old high performance programs for kids in sports. Maybe
- 36:56Speaker 1: this could be a combined netball things that make you
- 36:59Speaker 1: go hmm, but.
- 37:00Speaker 3: Yeah, how do you feel about that?
- 37:05Speaker 2: Look?
- 37:05Speaker 4: I said.
- 37:05Speaker 3: There was an article in the Herald, the Cindney Morning
- 37:08Speaker 3: Herald this week about people paying for their kids to
- 37:12Speaker 3: go and do these like gym programs, so they're outside sports,
- 37:15Speaker 3: so there's sort of age between ten and sixteen or seventeen,
- 37:18Speaker 3: and they go to these businesses and like Curdos and
- 37:21Speaker 3: these people who are starting these businesses they've seen a
- 37:23Speaker 3: gap in the market and going, oh, I'm going to
- 37:25Speaker 3: fill it. But kids going and getting sports psychologists and
- 37:29Speaker 3: nutrition and extra weight training and all that sort of stuff.
- 37:32Speaker 3: And it was just fascinating to read about it, and
- 37:36Speaker 3: I did wonder, like where we've got to as parents
- 37:38Speaker 3: that we go, oh, yeah, we need to actually get
- 37:41Speaker 3: all this extra stuff for my twelve year old to
- 37:43Speaker 3: be able to be an excellent athlete. Because then the
- 37:46Speaker 3: article went on to go through all of the stats,
- 37:49Speaker 3: and there's lots of research around to show that kids
- 37:52Speaker 3: who are great at ten or eleven or twelve aren't
- 37:54Speaker 3: necessarily the ones who go on to be professional.
- 37:59Speaker 2: And burn and or burnout.
- 38:02Speaker 3: Yeah, and I did wonder like in terms of like,
- 38:05Speaker 3: and I was thinking about, like, when I was a kid,
- 38:08Speaker 3: I've played all the sports, and my kids now play
- 38:11Speaker 3: all the sports. And the article went on to talk
- 38:14Speaker 3: about the fact that specializing in a sport early is
- 38:17Speaker 3: actually not great for you, and you actually need to
- 38:20Speaker 3: play lots of different sports. And I had a really
- 38:23Speaker 3: interesting conversation a couple of weeks ago. My daughter plays
- 38:27Speaker 3: is in the North Coast Academy of Sport for netball,
- 38:30Speaker 3: and one of the tournaments she's got a clash with rugby,
- 38:33Speaker 3: and the coach, to her credit, said, we believe in
- 38:36Speaker 3: playing lots of different sports. Let's work out how she
- 38:38Speaker 3: can play both sports because it's so important. And I reckon,
- 38:42Speaker 3: that's just a really good way to approach it. Particularly
- 38:44Speaker 3: for fourteen year old kids. So I did make me
- 38:47Speaker 3: go seeing all specialization.
- 38:51Speaker 1: It's a bit like I think, you know, we've got
- 38:53Speaker 1: jota what it's like in the other states that I
- 38:55Speaker 1: know that we didn't have this in Queensland when I
- 38:57Speaker 1: went to school, but that was a million years ago.
- 38:59Speaker 1: But they've got these selective public schools here in New
- 39:03Speaker 1: South Wales and a lot of the HSC results come
- 39:06Speaker 1: from these schools.
- 39:07Speaker 2: But there are a lot of.
- 39:09Speaker 1: People sending their kids to coaching to get them through
- 39:11Speaker 1: the test, to get them into the selective high schools.
- 39:15Speaker 1: And I can certainly see why, but I think, are
- 39:18Speaker 1: you not then setting your kid up for a life
- 39:21Speaker 1: of incredible stress that it's like we've supported you into
- 39:26Speaker 1: this to get you across the line in this, Like
- 39:30Speaker 1: are they then going to be up for the rigors
- 39:33Speaker 1: of that or are you better off to just go
- 39:36Speaker 1: do what you can at the school that you are
- 39:38Speaker 1: at and if you are really good and good enough
- 39:40Speaker 1: to get into the selective school or close anyway, you're
- 39:44Speaker 1: going to thrive in the academic environment at whatever school
- 39:47Speaker 1: you're at. It's like I just sort of feel a
- 39:49Speaker 1: bit like, man, when are the kids having their bloody childhood.
- 39:52Speaker 2: Nowadays, I can see both sides of that story. I
- 39:55Speaker 2: think it comes down to the delivery from the parents
- 39:58Speaker 2: as to what's happening y. If you give that to
- 40:01Speaker 2: them and say this is a bad opportunity, blah blah blah.
- 40:04Speaker 2: But if if there's a level of pressure involved in that,
- 40:07Speaker 2: it can definitely go the other way. Count it. And
- 40:10Speaker 2: I think that's what we've got to be so careful
- 40:11Speaker 2: about the wording of, you know, things towards kids and
- 40:14Speaker 2: putting that extra pressure on them, because I agree, you've
- 40:17Speaker 2: got to fail themselves to work out how you get
- 40:21Speaker 2: yourselves out of this. There are resilience they've got and
- 40:23Speaker 2: they've got to build and you know that's part of life.
- 40:26Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. And also, if you eat up your kid's
- 40:30Speaker 3: childhood in either extra coaching for academic success or extra
- 40:35Speaker 3: coaching for sporting success, then if they don't make it,
- 40:39Speaker 3: what do you do? Like what's the fallback position? And
- 40:42Speaker 3: I actually don't dounce it, Like maybe if they don't
- 40:44Speaker 3: make it, they've still got all these other skills that
- 40:46Speaker 3: they've acquired, so they're fine. It's actually really good for them,
- 40:50Speaker 3: you know, they understand the value of hard work and
- 40:53Speaker 3: setting goals and all that sort of stuff. But the
- 40:55Speaker 3: flip side is like, what if you like put all
- 40:57Speaker 3: your eggs in that basket and they don't become a
- 40:59Speaker 3: professional yeah athlete, or they don't become a doctor or
- 41:02Speaker 3: a lawyer, Like like, what's your next what's your phase?
- 41:06Speaker 3: B I guess the startup podcast.
- 41:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 41:09Speaker 2: Harper came home the other day and said she was
- 41:11Speaker 2: chatting with one of her little friends at school who
- 41:13Speaker 2: was saying she got really excited during the week because
- 41:16Speaker 2: out of the blue her parents that I watched television.
- 41:19Speaker 2: She's not allowed to watch television during the week, so
- 41:22Speaker 2: she got an unscheduled television moment, and I thought, holy ish,
- 41:28Speaker 2: what did they do?
- 41:30Speaker 4: Well?
- 41:30Speaker 2: She has to do homework or play her instrument or
- 41:33Speaker 2: whatever it is, or read and I thought wow. And
- 41:35Speaker 2: then I'm in that moment thinking that I'm the bad parent.
- 41:39Speaker 2: I'm like people, I said to it. People just do
- 41:40Speaker 2: things different. Yeah, there's no right or wrong to.
- 41:43Speaker 3: However we do this.
- 41:44Speaker 2: However, you can go to better Bit early tonight and
- 41:47Speaker 2: read a book.
- 41:51Speaker 3: But you should use those parents. So when half is winging,
- 41:54Speaker 3: you can say, well, at least I'm not little Mary
- 41:57Speaker 3: who doesn't like I let you watch television.
- 41:59Speaker 2: I'm a cooler, No, I'm a cool mom.
- 42:02Speaker 1: All right, terrific netball segment, our longest, bestest netball segment.
- 42:06Speaker 1: Imagine how good it's going to get. Yeah, we're just
- 42:09Speaker 1: going to take a little break and then come back
- 42:11Speaker 1: with some Ask the Goat excellence.
- 42:24Speaker 2: Okay, Liz, because.
- 42:26Speaker 1: Of all of our dramas today, we've got to get
- 42:28Speaker 1: you out the door shortly. I do have a really
- 42:30Speaker 1: interesting ask the Goat, but it's an ask the Goat
- 42:33Speaker 1: interpretive question from me because I have been seeing some
- 42:35Speaker 1: stuff on the Facebook group, so this hasn't come through
- 42:38Speaker 1: as a specific ask the Goat question. But good friend
- 42:41Speaker 1: of the podcast Lisa Sawyer, who has been on board
- 42:43Speaker 1: for a long time now. She is a Giants fan.
- 42:45Speaker 2: Now.
- 42:46Speaker 1: The reason she is a Giants fan is because she
- 42:48Speaker 1: didn't like the way the Swifts treated you towards the
- 42:50Speaker 1: back end of your career. So she is all at you, Cath.
- 42:54Speaker 1: I'm looking at Cath. This is not a visual medium though,
- 42:57Speaker 1: so that's good podcasting anyway.
- 42:59Speaker 2: So she's she's been all.
- 43:01Speaker 1: In Giants now. Nepple's very important to Lisa. She is
- 43:07Speaker 1: often though talking about the disappointment of them on court
- 43:13Speaker 1: in the last couple of years, and she is saying,
- 43:16Speaker 1: should I should I change teams? What should I do?
- 43:20Speaker 1: So I thought we would ask the goat and the Goala, like,
- 43:26Speaker 1: where are you at in terms of supporting team? I
- 43:28Speaker 1: have some I have some views about sporting supporting your team,
- 43:34Speaker 1: But you know, what should Lisa do in an instance
- 43:37Speaker 1: where she's facing a season where she thinks, I'm probably
- 43:41Speaker 1: not going to be getting a final series again.
- 43:46Speaker 3: I think this is a bit like ice cream, right.
- 43:47Speaker 3: If you had ice cream for every meal, you stop
- 43:49Speaker 3: understanding how good ice cream is. If you have fruiting,
- 43:56Speaker 3: Virgil McDonald's or whatever it is, free remeal, then you
- 43:58Speaker 3: get ice cream like, oh my god, god, ice creamy
- 44:00Speaker 3: is so good. I get it once a week. It's
- 44:02Speaker 3: a bit like following your team. If your team wins
- 44:04Speaker 3: all the time, then you forget how good winning is
- 44:07Speaker 3: because you're just used to it. Whereas if your team loses,
- 44:10Speaker 3: you stick with them, and you stick with them. When
- 44:12Speaker 3: the giants inevitably turn it around, as they will, you'll
- 44:15Speaker 3: like it will be so much sweeter. It's like the
- 44:18Speaker 3: best ice cream you've ever had. Love that makes sense, Catherine,
- 44:21Speaker 3: You're looking at me like I no.
- 44:23Speaker 2: No, I'm looking We're see the thrifle coming out of
- 44:25Speaker 2: my chin again.
- 44:27Speaker 3: It's like sausage rolls, Catherine, yea, yeah, you make anything intently. Yeah,
- 44:32Speaker 3: if you have sausage rolls every meal, Like, you don't
- 44:34Speaker 3: understand how good sausage rolls are. You get sausage rolls
- 44:37Speaker 3: like once a month, particularly if you get there to
- 44:40Speaker 3: the bakery on time, Like the next sausage roll that
- 44:42Speaker 3: you have is going to taste so good because you've
- 44:43Speaker 3: missed out last week.
- 44:45Speaker 2: We not I'm going to have to go to the
- 44:47Speaker 2: bakery on the way home. But I do one hundred
- 44:50Speaker 2: percent agree with you. You cannot because imagine if she
- 44:52Speaker 2: up and left her team this year and then they
- 44:54Speaker 2: go and turn it around. I have this brilliant season.
- 44:56Speaker 2: She would be devastated. So I agree, And I think
- 44:59Speaker 2: look at the side as well. They're on the cusp
- 45:02Speaker 2: of something. I think.
- 45:03Speaker 1: So if it's not this year, I think it's next
- 45:05Speaker 1: year for the Giants, I'm home. But also like for me,
- 45:08Speaker 1: the Giants last year and they're my second team, I
- 45:11Speaker 1: thought they showed hard. Yes, that just made the season
- 45:18Speaker 1: so exciting. It was so joyful to see the changes,
- 45:23Speaker 1: to see Aaron O'Brien start to learn from Casey, to
- 45:26Speaker 1: see them get those wins at the back half of
- 45:29Speaker 1: the season that they had been hunting for for solo
- 45:32Speaker 1: that had such bad luck.
- 45:33Speaker 2: And this is the thing.
- 45:34Speaker 1: You don't know what's going to happen to any of
- 45:36Speaker 1: the other teams, let alone your own team. But it's
- 45:39Speaker 1: like West Coast Fevers. You know, they're dropping like flies
- 45:43Speaker 1: in terms of who they thought they were counting on
- 45:45Speaker 1: this year. So they're team's going to look entirely different.
- 45:48Speaker 1: That doesn't mean that they're out, that just means that
- 45:50Speaker 1: things are going to look different. So, Lisa, I reckon
- 45:54Speaker 1: hang in there with your team. And that's why you're
- 45:58Speaker 1: part of the team and you're part of the is
- 46:00Speaker 1: to show them that I'm behind you and I believe
- 46:03Speaker 1: in you. And then you can stick your middle finger
- 46:07Speaker 1: up at anyone else who's got something to say about
- 46:09Speaker 1: your team when they inevitably do start to turn it
- 46:12Speaker 1: around and get back on top of that ladder again,
- 46:14Speaker 1: which they have.
- 46:15Speaker 2: Yeah, and they need your support when they're down. Yes,
- 46:17Speaker 2: that's when they need you right behind them rowing them
- 46:19Speaker 2: because these are elite athletes. They're not out there not trying.
- 46:22Speaker 3: Yeah, they're doing their best.
- 46:23Speaker 2: Absolutely with them. Support them.
- 46:26Speaker 1: So the Goat, the Goala and the Netny nome alsay,
- 46:30Speaker 1: stick with the giants, Lisa, go in double down, get stronger,
- 46:34Speaker 1: support even more.
- 46:35Speaker 2: Yeah. Now we're about to wrap up. Gott to go.
- 46:39Speaker 1: No dribble recommends. This is a quick one from me
- 46:41Speaker 1: this week. No Dribble recommends you get involved in the
- 46:44Speaker 1: No Dribble tipping comp which is now it's only fifteen
- 46:48Speaker 1: bucks for the whole season. You can win an amazing
- 46:51Speaker 1: prize at the end of the season, which is to
- 46:53Speaker 1: come to our function the night before the Grand Final
- 46:56Speaker 1: in Melbourne, which we now know. Jump on nodribble dot
- 47:01Speaker 1: com dot au and register there join join the many
- 47:05Speaker 1: hundreds of people who have already joined the fun.
- 47:07Speaker 2: So you love the names, yes, reading on them. There's
- 47:10Speaker 2: a couple of Coxies hot boxing. Yes, Coxy has a
- 47:12Speaker 2: huck of it. So your box rocks on Cox Rocks,
- 47:16Speaker 2: not to be confused with Cox in a box. I'm
- 47:19Speaker 2: the netty name Liz. What are you this year?
- 47:21Speaker 3: Well, I'm the meat tray, but I actually I shouldn't
- 47:24Speaker 3: be the meat Train just registered Matthew as the meat Train.
- 47:26Speaker 3: He's like, why am I getting all these emails?
