- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37And then in verse 5 he says what the Angel answered and said to
- 0:41the women, do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who
- 0:45was crucified. And then verse 6 is probably my
- 0:49favorite verse. The Angel said he is not here,
- 0:56for he is risen as he said. Don't forget that part, as he
- 1:03said. As he said, this is an important
- 1:08phrase in the Bible for so many of us.
- 1:11As we say doesn't mean much. Our yes isn't yes and our no
- 1:16isn't no. We flip flop a lot with our
- 1:17words and commitments. The Bible provides plenty of
- 1:22details for things that were predicted to happen, and the
- 1:26death and resurrection of Jesus is the most pivotal in all of
- 1:30history. But as he said, it's a phrase
- 1:33that confirms the words spoken by the prophets.
- 1:37Today, you'll learn from Pastor Lewis just how much you can
- 1:41trust in the Word of God. Now here's Pastor Lewis in the
- 1:45Gospel of Matthew chapter 28 with today's edition of Living
- 1:49Waters of Grace. I would ask if you would turn in
- 1:52your bodies please to the book of Matthew and we're going to
- 1:56look at the 28th chapter there beginning at verse one.
- 2:01One of the reasons why we have decided to play this particular
- 2:08rap song that Case and his wrote is because it kind of depicts
- 2:14exactly what it was that my life was about before I knew Christ
- 2:18and, and how I celebrated Easter.
- 2:23And I want to say this, and I'm going to say this right at the
- 2:25top. Many people call it Easter.
- 2:28Many people call it Resurrection day.
- 2:31We're not more holy. People call it one or the other.
- 2:35The one who calls it resurrection Day is no more holy
- 2:37or righteous than the one who calls it Easter.
- 2:41OK, that's not the point. The point is, where's the heart?
- 2:45Where's the heart if your heart prioritizes what happened that
- 2:51day, The fact that our Lord and Savior walked out of that tomb
- 2:57and we don't know what He walked.
- 2:58Maybe He levitated out of it. I don't know.
- 3:00I wasn't there. But we do know that He did rise
- 3:05Sunday morning. And because He lives, we live.
- 3:11That's the important thing about the resurrection.
- 3:13It's not whether you call it Easter or whether you call it
- 3:16Resurrection Day. I just want to make that clear
- 3:17right from the top. So when someone says Happy
- 3:20Easter to me and I say happy Resurrection Day back, I'm not
- 3:23trying to be more righteous than you and I'm not saying that
- 3:25you're more righteous than me. But it's the heart behind the
- 3:29reason why we celebrate that makes this day so special.
- 3:33That's what separates us from the world.
- 3:35And as long as we have that in mind, doesn't matter what we
- 3:38call it, long as we know that this is the day that we
- 3:42commemorate and celebrate the day that our Lord and Savior was
- 3:48risen, just as he said. Amen.
- 3:51So, yeah, Well, but, but for many years, that was me.
- 3:54I, I, I celebrated Easter because of what it gave me,
- 3:59because of what this day gave me.
- 4:01See, when I was young, and maybe many of you can relate to it,
- 4:05but when I was young, we celebrated Easter.
- 4:08And that meant a new suit, a new pair of shoes and lots of candy.
- 4:15And that was every year. That was every year I could look
- 4:18forward to getting a new suit. Every year.
- 4:20My mom would give me a new suit every year because Easter had to
- 4:23go to church and have on an Easter suit and everybody else
- 4:26had on one. So we went to church and we were
- 4:29looking at what everybody else was wearing and everybody's
- 4:32suits and everybody's shoes. Oh more, that looks nice.
- 4:35That looks nice. How much can I was running
- 4:38around trying to get all the Reese's peanut butter cups I can
- 4:40find and everybody's baskets. But that's what it meant to me.
- 4:49That's what it meant to me. But now being in Christ Jesus,
- 4:55it means so much more. And that's what we want to talk
- 4:59about this morning. You see the resurrection of
- 5:02Jesus Christ. It's a historical as well as a
- 5:06fulfilled prophecy. It provides a lot of things for
- 5:11us. First of all, it provides the
- 5:12fact that it is fulfilled. It does fulfill the Old
- 5:16Testament prophecy and the proof that Jesus Christ is the
- 5:21Messiah. Secondly, it's hope for our own
- 5:27resurrection one day. Just to look at a couple verses
- 5:31concerning that, I'd like to look at Romans first of all,
- 5:34chapter 6 and yeah, chapter 6 and verses 8 and 9, and I'll
- 5:40just read it just basically says now we have died with Christ, we
- 5:46believe that we shall also live with him knowing that Christ,
- 5:50having been raised from the dead, dies no more.
- 5:55Second Corinthians chapter 4 and verse 14 says, knowing that he
- 6:02who raised up the Lord Jesus will also raise up, raise us up
- 6:06with Jesus and will present us with you.
- 6:11And then in first Peter gives us another encouragement.
- 6:16First Peter chapter 1 and verse 3 says blessed be the God and
- 6:21Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his abundant
- 6:25mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the
- 6:29resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
- 6:35So his resurrection is hope for us that we too will be
- 6:40resurrected one day. But I also want to mention that
- 6:44it wasn't like when he resurrected.
- 6:46It wasn't like him just coming just being made alive again.
- 6:49See back in in the Old Testament, there's different
- 6:53times when we see that people were made alive.
- 6:56Elijah, he brought the woman's son who had died, and she, you
- 7:02know, he raised him from the dead.
- 7:07Jesus even rose Lazarus from the dead, but they died again.
- 7:12If they weren't resurrected, they were raised from the dead.
- 7:17Jesus was resurrected. He was resurrected to new life.
- 7:21His body was not the same. Now he's able to go through and
- 7:26we'll get to that in a minute, but he's able to walk through
- 7:28walls and appear. He was different because the
- 7:33body that went in is not the same body that goes out.
- 7:36We're we're, we may go in the ground with dishonor, but we're
- 7:39raised in glory. We may go in the ground, a
- 7:43natural body, but we're raised a spiritual body.
- 7:46We may go in the ground, a weak body, but we're raised in power.
- 7:51So it's not just him coming alive again.
- 7:55He was resurrected and makes such a big difference.
- 7:59So now let's go back to our let's go to our story.
- 8:02So being that we have these two facts that it fulfills Old
- 8:06Testament prophecy and and also the fact that it's hoped for our
- 8:10own resurrection. The one thing that's important
- 8:13that we look at now is, well, how should we live in light of
- 8:17the resurrection? How does that impact the way we
- 8:19live? Does it impact our life or is it
- 8:22just something we look at? So it happened and we just keep
- 8:24going. No, it has an impact on our
- 8:26life. It has an impact on the how we
- 8:29live going forward. We'll get into that.
- 8:34But looking at verse chapter 28, starting at verse one, and I'll
- 8:39just read down to verse 3 and then we'll go back and make
- 8:41calm. He says this now after the 7th,
- 8:44as the first day of the week began to dawn.
- 8:48Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb, and
- 8:53behold, there was a great earthquake, for an Angel of the
- 8:58Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone
- 9:02from the door and sat on it. Just stop there for a second.
- 9:06That's a mouthful. So we see that on Sunday
- 9:11morning, which is the early Sunday morning, which is when
- 9:15the two women decided that it was time for them to go when
- 9:18they brought spices with them. They brought spices because they
- 9:22were going to prepare the body. They were going to anoint the
- 9:24body of Jesus. So they brought they came with
- 9:27spices and they really expected to see a body there.
- 9:30You know, it wasn't like they came thinking that it would be,
- 9:33that it would not be there. They expected to see that body
- 9:37there. So they brought these spices and
- 9:39they obviously couldn't do it on the Sabbath, which was the day
- 9:42before this, which was a Saturday.
- 9:44They couldn't do it on the Sabbath.
- 9:45So they waited until dawn of the Sunday morning, which is early
- 9:51Sunday morning. But before they got there, the
- 9:55Bible tells us that there was something epic that it happened
- 10:00before they got there. Now, we don't know if it
- 10:01happened late Saturday night or if it happened early Sunday
- 10:05morning before they actually got there.
- 10:07But what we know is something epic happened.
- 10:11And when they got there, all they saw is that the door to the
- 10:15tomb, the OR the stone that was in front of the tomb was
- 10:19removed. That's all they saw.
- 10:21They were wondering how are they going to remove that big stone
- 10:24before they got there. That was a conversation they
- 10:27were having and thinking, how are we going to remove this big
- 10:29stone? We're not talking when it says a
- 10:30stone. We're not talking about a
- 10:32Pebble, we're talking about a boulder that they use to cover
- 10:37and secure this tomb. So they're wondering, you know,
- 10:42Mary and the other Mary and the other women that are with them,
- 10:44how are we going to move this tomb?
- 10:47Men can hardly move it. How are we going to do it?
- 10:49But before they got there, God had already took care of that.
- 10:53And he says it was a great earthquake.
- 10:56And isn't amazing that earthquakes always somehow
- 11:03accompany great things that happen in the Word of God?
- 11:06When he was crucified, the Bible says there was a earthquake when
- 11:11he was crucified. And the Bible says there was an
- 11:14earthquake here at the resurrection.
- 11:18So there was a great earthquake and the Angel of the Lord had
- 11:23descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone from
- 11:28the door and sat on it. So this Angel came down from
- 11:33heaven. And I don't believe that the
- 11:36Angel got behind his boulder and pushed it.
- 11:38I believe all he did was just part of him waved his hand or
- 11:40something and, and the boater just moved.
- 11:43I mean, we saw on the Old Testament that Moses, all he did
- 11:46was put up his arms and he, he raised the staff that was in his
- 11:52hand and the whole Red Sea divided.
- 11:55So I can't imagine these angels having to put forth any labor to
- 11:59move this stone. But the interesting thing is
- 12:01what happens here in verse in verse 4.
- 12:05Let's look at verse three first. He says His countenance was like
- 12:08lightning. This is just the description of
- 12:10the Angel. His countenance was like
- 12:12lightning and His clothes as white as snow.
- 12:16If you remember in the Transfiguration when they looked
- 12:18at Christ, his face glowed. It was like white, the glory of
- 12:23the Lord is so bright they could hardly look at him and he
- 12:26appeared to have on white garments.
- 12:29It also says that the same is in Revelation when John the Apostle
- 12:34John first saw Jesus in Revelations and and it said that
- 12:38he had on a white garment the purity of holiness, the purity
- 12:45of godliness is what these things represent.
- 12:49And this Angel was representing the purity and it says like
- 12:52lightning. So he was also representing the
- 12:54power of God. And in verse 4 says in the and
- 12:59the guards shook for fear of him and became like dead men.
- 13:04Now these are guard. Now we don't know exactly how
- 13:06many of these guards were there guarding this tomb.
- 13:09We don't know exactly. The Bible doesn't say
- 13:10specifically how many was there. The speculation is that there
- 13:14were probably at least 4 because when they say of guard, it
- 13:18represents at least 4, but it could be anywhere from four men
- 13:22to about 16 men in a single guard.
- 13:26So it wasn't clear exactly how many of these men the these
- 13:31soldiers were there guarding this tomb.
- 13:33But what we do know, and we know this from back in chapter 27,
- 13:38and it says this in chapter 27, verse 64, starting verse 62, it
- 13:44says on the next day, this is the next day after the
- 13:48crucifixion which followed the day of preparation.
- 13:52The chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to pilot,
- 13:55saying, Sir, we remember while he was still alive, how the
- 14:00deceiver said, after three days I will rise.
- 14:03Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the 3rd
- 14:07day, lest his disciples come by night and steal him away and say
- 14:12to the people, He has risen from the dead.
- 14:16So the last deception will be worse than the first 65 pilots
- 14:21said to them, You have a guard, go go your way and make it as
- 14:26secure as you know. So they went and made the tomb
- 14:30secure, sealing the stone and setting the guard.
- 14:34So these guards that the Pharisees were actually they had
- 14:39access to were actually Roman soldiers.
- 14:42Roman soldiers. I'm saying this for a reason,
- 14:45because if you're talking about here, that these men over here
- 14:49in verse 28, verse 4 where it says and the guards shook for
- 14:52fear of him and became like dead men.
- 14:56We're not talking about men who were like me, who won't even,
- 14:59who won't even face a bear in the woods or won't even go
- 15:03camping because of what I might see in the woods.
- 15:05We're not talking about men like that.
- 15:07We're talking about soldiers. We're talking about men who are
- 15:10proven to be gladiators, men who will fight.
- 15:13They they are, are strong men. They are proven valor men, men
- 15:19who will go to battle. And at that particular time,
- 15:22Rome was probably the best trained army in the world.
- 15:26But when these men saw that Angel, the sight of that must
- 15:31have been so terrifying to them that the Bible said they shook,
- 15:37They shook. In fact, they were so afraid
- 15:41that they became like dead men. And they became like dead men
- 15:45because of the fear, because of the fear that they experienced.
- 15:51Now this now this dead doesn't mean that they actually were
- 15:54dead. Obviously they weren't dead
- 15:56dead, but they were unconscious. And when you look at what it
- 15:59means, like by dead men they're talking about, they were
- 16:02incapacitated by overwhelming fear.
- 16:05They were rendered helpless, rendered weak because of the
- 16:11power, the display of power that they saw in God.
- 16:17I can't imagine seeing that power and how would it impact us
- 16:25standing in the power in the presence of God.
- 16:30It's a fear that causes fainting and his Angel and these men did
- 16:35faint in the presence of these of this Angel.
- 16:40Now it also talked about that as well with Jesus when they went
- 16:43to arrest him, when they asked who Jesus was and he says I am
- 16:48Jesus. Bible says they felt like dead
- 16:51man. They felt like dead man because
- 16:56the power, the purity and the holiness of God is overwhelming.
- 17:03It's overwhelming. And then in verse 5, he says
- 17:07what the Angel answered and said to the women, Do not be afraid,
- 17:11for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.
- 17:15And then verse 6 is probably my favorite verse.
- 17:20The Angel said he is not here for he is risen as he said.
- 17:28Don't forget that part, as he said.
- 17:33That part is important. We know that throughout the
- 17:36Gospels that there have been many times when Jesus predicted
- 17:40when he's speaking to his apostles and his disciples, when
- 17:43he would tell the fact that he would go and he's going to be
- 17:46betrayed. He's going to go to Jerusalem.
- 17:48He's going to be betrayed, and he's going to suffer at the
- 17:51hands of these wicked men. And that he's going to be
- 17:56killed. Jesus.
- 17:58Yeah, he's he's I'm going to be killed.
- 18:02But on the third day, I'm going to rise again.
- 18:05He said that to him a number of times, but that never really
- 18:08sunk in for them. It never sunk into them, but he
- 18:13said it so many times and he even said it to the Pharisees
- 18:16when they talked about wanting to destroy Jesus.
- 18:19Jesus said destroy this temple and I'll raise it up.
- 18:21I'll raise it up in three days. Go ahead.
- 18:27And they said they thinking he's talking physical.
- 18:29So they said, wait a minute, it took 46 years to build a temple
- 18:32and you are going to build it in three days.
- 18:35But Jesus was talking about the temple of his own body.
- 18:39He said, I will raise it up in three days.
- 18:42So these angels, what they're saying here is epic.
- 18:44It's so it's so important and it's so serious and it means so
- 18:48much for us because it is as he said, as he said.
- 18:54So if this wouldn't have been true, how could we have believed
- 19:00anything else that he told us? So it was important that the
- 19:06Angel specifically mentioned, as he said, if you have faith in
- 19:11this, have faith in everything else that he said, boy, you got
- 19:15a good, you got a bright future. It's going to be well for you
- 19:19because he does what he says. Numbers tell us that God is.
- 19:22He's not a man that he should lie.
- 19:26If he says that he's going to do it, he's not a man that he
- 19:29should lie. So then he talked about it.
- 19:32He he goes even further than that.
- 19:34He says he's not here. He is risen as he said, come
- 19:38see, I actually have AI started wearing those.
- 19:40I got a T-shirt that says come see.
- 19:43I started to wear it, but he says come see.
- 19:46So in other words, what he's saying is, look, I know you're
- 19:48not going to just take my word for it, even though I'm an Angel
- 19:50that that constantly stands before the Lord in heaven and
- 19:54I've come down from heaven in order to do this feet.
- 19:56But I'm not asking you to just take my word for that.
- 19:59I want you to come see. So he, you know, he said, go see
- 20:03and see the place where the Lord lie.
- 20:06And then in verse 7 he says, and go, and go quickly and tell his
- 20:09disciples that he is risen from the dead.
- 20:12And indeed He is going before them into Galilee.
- 20:15There you will see him. Behold, I have told you this
- 20:20Angel, He, He's giving them an invitation now, an invitation to
- 20:24come and validate what He just said.
- 20:28So they go when they look in and they see, well, He's not there.
- 20:32He's not there. I've never been to Israel.
- 20:36I've never been to Jerusalem. I've never been to this tomb,
- 20:40but I know many people who have my pastor have a Clark, you've
- 20:44been to this tomb, correct? So and I know many people have
- 20:48been there several times, several times.
- 20:52So I want to ask a question because I know that when the
- 20:57people that I asked when they were there at this tomb and they
- 21:01said, well, you want to go over to Jerusalem, I said I don't
- 21:03need to. You were there.
- 21:05You said he wasn't in there. You said he wasn't there.
- 21:12So I believe he wasn't there. The Bible says he wasn't there.
- 21:16That's two witnesses. Pastor Clark, when you went to
- 21:21Jerusalem, when you went to the tomb, when you looked in, was he
- 21:28there? I have no reason to have to go.
- 21:31My pastor said he wasn't there, He's not there, and indeed he is
- 21:37going before you into Galilee. There you will see him.
- 21:41Behold, I have told you. And he did.
- 21:44He told him just that. Jesus told them on the last time
- 21:49in the book of Matthew when he told him that he was going to be
- 21:52killed and he was going to be buried and he was going to rise
- 21:57again. He said, but I will go before
- 21:59you in Galilee. If you go back to Matthew
- 22:03chapter 26, which is a should be just a couple pages over and
- 22:07verse 32 and I'm going to start reading here in verse 31.
- 22:12Then Jesus said to them, all of you will be made to stumble
- 22:16because of me this night. For it is written, I will strike
- 22:20the shepherd, meaning that he was going to be stricken,
- 22:25beaten, He's going to suffer and he's going to die, and the sheep
- 22:30of the flock will be scattered. And that's exactly what they all
- 22:33did when he was being beaten. They ran, they left them.
- 22:37Even Peter who said that he wouldn't.
- 22:40Verse 32 But after I have been raised, I will go before you to
- 22:47Galilee. So just like the Angel said,
- 22:49look just like he said, just like he told you, OK, he's going
- 22:54to go before you into Galilee. So so far everything that Jesus
- 22:57has said was going to happen is coming to be verse 8 and 9
- 23:03Matthew do 10/2. He says so they went out quickly
- 23:09from the tomb with fear and great joy and they ran to bring
- 23:14his disciples word. So let's stop there for a
- 23:18second. So they left with both fear and
- 23:22joy. I I I can certainly understand
- 23:24that and you just saw this Angel sitting on a the stone of this
- 23:30tomb that it probably would have taken about 30 men plus a
- 23:34machine to move of some type. But this Angel was there by
- 23:38himself. But the other account actually
- 23:40show that there were more than one Angel there.
- 23:43We don't know exactly how many angels were there, but there
- 23:45were more than one Angel. There was more than one Angel
- 23:46there. Thanks for joining us today as
- 23:50we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus here on Living Waters of
- 23:55Grace. Pastor Lewis Harrell has been so
- 23:58excited to share with us about the miracle of the resurrection
- 24:02of Christ. The human race spent thousands
- 24:05of years lost in sin before God sent His only Son, Jesus Christ,
- 24:11to come be a perfect sacrifice for all mankind.
- 24:15His blood is enough to atone for the sins of all mankind, and His
- 24:19resurrection puts an end to death itself.
- 24:24Our desire is to spread this good news of the Gospel to as
- 24:28many people as possible, but we need your help to do so.
- 24:32The first way you can help us is by sharing this program with a
- 24:36friend. You can join us here on Grace FM
