- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take, where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts right now. Welcome back to the Three O Take
- 0:17presented by SeatGeek. This is episode 462.
- 0:20I'll be your host Kyle Corwin. I'm here with my Co host Nate
- 0:23Reyes. Nate.
- 0:28That is I I'm that guy. Welcome back, Herb Body hanging
- 0:34out with us on this early recording.
- 0:37Early recording. This is the early one.
- 0:39It's got people in the live chat which is insanely cool.
- 0:43Nate's got bigger and better things.
- 0:45He's got a he's got a handle tonight.
- 0:46He's got a big, big fantasy football draft.
- 0:48I don't fault you. I mean, I'd probably I'd
- 0:51probably request an early recording if I were you to.
- 0:54So this is a big. One, this is a big one.
- 0:56I've done at least 15 mock drafts.
- 1:00I believe there's a lot of pressure on this one, so we'll
- 1:05see. We shall can.
- 1:08We get a just a quick glimpse in your draft strategy here.
- 1:10And do you know who who you're going with for your first pick?
- 1:13So I'm in the 11 spot out of 12. The you don't, I know you
- 1:21haven't been doing anything fantasy football wise in a
- 1:24while, but like there's this strategy that's like either 0
- 1:28running back or hero running back.
- 1:31So like you either get your running backs early or you wait
- 1:35way late and just get like crazy with wide receivers.
- 1:40I think I'm going hero running back and I and Saquon, I would
- 1:49love if Jonathan Taylor fell back to me with the Colts, but I
- 1:52don't think he will. So I think I'm going to go
- 1:54Saquon and Jameer Gibbs right away and then just like wide
- 1:58receivers for a while. But I'm in this league with my
- 2:01father-in-law. I was telling you before we
- 2:03hopped on, these old guys just freaking love quarterbacks and
- 2:07they get them ridiculously early and it just throws the whole
- 2:11strategy off. So I have no idea what's going
- 2:13to happen. It's going to be tough, going to
- 2:17be weird, but I'm ready to get weird.
- 2:20Not just for that, for this too, you know.
- 2:23I mean, let's get weird. Speaking of weird, no, this is a
- 2:26great, this is a great segue. So I went to the I went to the
- 2:31O's Astros game yesterday. It was sort of a sort of a make
- 2:35up plan for not going the week before when the socks were in
- 2:38town. But logistics didn't work out
- 2:42last weekend. But Meredith was like, hey,
- 2:44let's get to a game. You've been talking about
- 2:47wanting to go to games. I was like, all right, yeah,
- 2:48let's go to Baltimore. So we went down there for the
- 2:50game against the Astros yesterday.
- 2:51Beautiful weather. Ballpark was packed.
- 2:56We were. We ended up peeing like 20
- 2:58minutes late, though. I'm telling you the pitch clock.
- 3:02It really just moved to. Hills kills the in person
- 3:05experience. I know we're we're like a ways
- 3:07into this now. So it's it's no point me even
- 3:10like rehashing that, but and we were like 20 minutes late and
- 3:14then by the time we got to our spot, it was like middle of the
- 3:173rd. I'm like, well, that sucks.
- 3:20But anyway, talking weird. So we just went as cheap as
- 3:25possible. I just got a couple standing
- 3:26room only tickets because I was like, I don't really have a dog
- 3:29in this fight anyway, just want to catch some good baseball,
- 3:31beautiful weather. So let's just let's go.
- 3:33Hang about Utah. Yeah, take a walk around, take
- 3:36around the park we actually ended up.
- 3:37How longing out there. Yeah, it's, oh, it's incredible.
- 3:41They do it right. The ballpark is very, very well
- 3:45made and and very well set up. But we ended up actually setting
- 3:49up shop out above the bullpen. So like if if you've seen the
- 3:53view out towards the bullpens, there's like the the railings
- 3:57there where you can, you can look.
- 3:58There's like that little like park right behind it where it's
- 4:00like picking. Tables and stuff, yeah.
- 4:03So you can like look right over and and see the guys in the pen.
- 4:06So we're seeing it right on top of the the Stroh's pen and we're
- 4:10actually up on the rail and we got a spot there on the rail.
- 4:12And so, you know, like Naris is walking by, haters walking by.
- 4:17Caleb Ferguson was hanging out right in front of us for for a
- 4:20good bit, and I didn't say a word to these guys, nor like,
- 4:23nor would I. I'd have no reason to.
- 4:25It doesn't matter if it's the Astros, even if it was the
- 4:27Yankees. I'm not like whatever, I'm just
- 4:29here to watch. I don't think either of us.
- 4:31We're we're well beyond the age of saying anything to the guys
- 4:34in the bullpen. This one guy, however, and this
- 4:36is where the whole weird segue comes into play.
- 4:40There's this guy who is over in the center field, seats to the
- 4:45right of the hitter's eye. Wish I wish I would have been
- 4:49able to like say something to this guy like dude, re evaluate
- 4:51your life. But anyway, the guy is sitting
- 4:53in the center field seats and hater is over there doing his
- 5:00his band work in preparation for a possible appearance into the
- 5:03game. Ended up not going in, but he's
- 5:05over there doing his band work like in the shadows, like he he
- 5:08he's not even in the actual pen. He went outside the the pen
- 5:11walked up the walkway towards the base of the hitter's eye.
- 5:14And there's just like a little little cavity there where you
- 5:16can kind of just hide out and do your work.
- 5:19He's down there. And this guy who I would
- 5:22probably peg at, I'll call it, I'll call it an even 30.
- 5:29It's probably even 30. He's rocking a Jackson holiday
- 5:33shirt. Meanwhile, every Astros brand,
- 5:38brand new fan, every Astros reliever that steps up to do
- 5:42their work, yelling at the top of his lungs.
- 5:45Hey hater, you suck. Like blood curdling yelling.
- 5:51I'm like my my my brother. Let's dial it back.
- 5:55Please like the 6th inning. The 6th inning and then Caleb
- 6:00Ferguson gets up to to warm up because he he actually ended up
- 6:04going to the game as he's making his way to the to the to the
- 6:08gate to make his way out onto the field.
- 6:10He this guy goes, hey Caleb, you're literally balding.
- 6:15You are literally balding. And I looked over at Meredith
- 6:17and I said that guy is probably 30 years old.
- 6:22Here's wearing a jersey of a guy that's 20 years old and he's
- 6:27yelling at a guy who's roughly around the same age as him, if
- 6:32not older, telling him that he's losing his hair.
- 6:35You need to re evaluate your life choices.
- 6:37If you're if you go to a baseball game and you're you're
- 6:42if it's a rival, OK, I kind of get it.
- 6:44But like the age I think takes precedent here.
- 6:46Like if you're above a certain age, if you're here, here's
- 6:52here's where I draw the line. If you're if you're a one off
- 6:55case and you're just shouting at a guy, you're the only one
- 6:59saying anything to where everybody around you can hear
- 7:02what's being said. No, like, come on, you're 30
- 7:05years old, you're 40 years old, 50, whatever.
- 7:08If you're above 30, maybe even 25, like, come on, let's grow
- 7:12up. But if you're just shouting as
- 7:15part of the mob, just randomness, whatever.
- 7:18But like, my brother, you're 30 years old.
- 7:20You're wearing a jersey. The guy that's a kid that's 20
- 7:23years old, Yeah, that's just weird.
- 7:26It was very, very strange. That's weirdo activity.
- 7:30Very, very strange activity, but you know, Orioles fans are going
- 7:34through it right now. That's what I'm saying, dude.
- 7:36Like Orioles fans don't know how to act right now.
- 7:38Like, relax for a SEC, man. They're just freaking out and
- 7:46they're so ready to throw shade and then they're so ready to
- 7:49hate their own team. It's so it's really weird.
- 7:53Get a little tastier that success.
- 7:55I don't know how to act. That's what we've been saying.
- 7:57Leave my boy Ryan alone, by the way.
- 7:59Yeah, Ryan is. Touching ridiculous strays for
- 8:03no for being optimistic. Get off his back.
- 8:06And understanding that a season is a marathon.
- 8:09Get off his back. Fanbase attacking my guy, I
- 8:12don't like it. Hey, let's, let's talk show
- 8:16talking about success, let's talk Shohei reaching the 4040
- 8:21club. It's not even September.
- 8:27I mean, you could say that for both of these these headline
- 8:31headlines we're we're talking about here today with with
- 8:33Shohei and Judge. It's not even September.
- 8:37Yeah, and in classic show hey, fashion goes out.
- 8:41What was this was Friday night goes out Friday night and does
- 8:45it in the same game. If it was anybody else, I'd be
- 8:52like, wow, that's I mean, what a talk about a surprise.
- 8:56It was show. Hey, I was almost expecting it,
- 8:59if I'm being honest with you. I mean, what, what?
- 9:03What more do we have to say about this guy?
- 9:05I think he's just so under the radar with stolen bases.
- 9:09I think he's so under the radar. Have you watched him run?
- 9:12I know. He's he's like a deer.
- 9:15It's sneaky quick. Well, it's not even sneaky.
- 9:18He's got forty stolen bags, but. Long strides, long, efficient
- 9:22strides. Dude is a freak.
- 9:25By the way, random, do you know how old Shohei is?
- 9:29I I feel like we talk about Shohei all the time, but I don't
- 9:31know if you've ever really brought to attention his age.
- 9:35I said 28. He's 30. 30.
- 9:40Because when I saw him move, I was like.
- 9:42He was in with the with the angels for what, like seven
- 9:45years? What was he he got there 18,
- 9:47Yeah. So six years.
- 9:50Six years. The reason I, I was looking up
- 9:54his age to confirm because I was like, take it somewhere around
- 9:5730, maybe a little below that. The reason I was looking up his
- 10:00age is because I saw a move and I was like, I wonder how that's
- 10:03going to age. Like you, you know, how it ages
- 10:06with, with, with other guys who are, who are also fast.
- 10:09But Shohei is in a league of his own here.
- 10:12He's in a, he's in a tier of his own.
- 10:14You just don't know how that's how that's going to, how that's
- 10:16going to translate. I don't, I don't know, like if,
- 10:23if it's going to be better than other other situations with with
- 10:27guys who are just as fast or if it's if it's going to age worse
- 10:31because he's he's doing. So much you're saying just the
- 10:33speed thing, like just the speed?
- 10:35Are you saying speed or stolen basis?
- 10:40Speed as a tool I would say OK. I think there was like this
- 10:47level of because can't we, we can go back to the last few
- 10:54years and the stolen bases weren't this high, right?
- 10:58No, and that I mean that that brings up the whole conversation
- 11:01of the. The base is getting larger and
- 11:03the and the. The well, I think it brings up
- 11:06the conversation of him not pitching like, like, hey, we're
- 11:12not having you in the field. You're not using, You're not
- 11:14even needing to save this stamina for the mound.
- 11:20There's like this lack of like less cautious approach of just
- 11:26saying like, hey, get after it. I I don't.
- 11:31Yeah, 220 last year, 11 the year before, 26 the year before.
- 11:37I mean, he is ramping it up like I don't know if you've seen
- 11:39he's, he's had some, some pen sessions.
- 11:42So like he's, he's at least back in that world in terms of being
- 11:48back on the bump. So it's not to me, it's not like
- 11:51a full freedom, like hey, go do what you want because you're not
- 11:54throwing. It's like, well, be careful
- 11:58'cause we are planning to revisit that side of your game
- 12:02at some point. So let's not just go completely.
- 12:06You think he comes back this year?
- 12:08I don't think that was the plan. I mean unless see.
- 12:12That's what I'm saying. Is there like this freedom that
- 12:17he wouldn't have otherwise, that he won't have moving forward?
- 12:24Is it also the mentality of the Dodgers versus the Angels,
- 12:27right? Like, I love it.
- 12:30I'm here for it. I think if you, if we have
- 12:33someone like this, like I want to see what you're capable of
- 12:36fully, right? He talked like Barry Bonds
- 12:40before, like pre steroids, Barry Bonds was swiping bags all the
- 12:44time. Then then it just kind of like
- 12:46got eliminated out of his game. I, I, I say let this guy eat,
- 12:51let him do whatever he wants to do.
- 12:53I I hope this stays in his repertoire once he is back on
- 12:58the mountain full time. In the chat, what do we what do
- 13:01we think show hey is no, what do we think his lines going to end
- 13:04up being bagged or home runs and bags?
- 13:06What do we think he's going to end up with?
- 13:07Because like I said, it's not even it's not even September.
- 13:13Just some more Nuggets here on on his feet.
- 13:17He's the first Dodgers in franchise history, which is
- 13:19really hard to believe. I mean, you look at that
- 13:23franchise and you go, Shirley, surely somebody had to have come
- 13:28along and put up a 4040 season, surely.
- 13:32Yeah. He's a first Dodger to do it.
- 13:35He's a six player in Major League Baseball history to join
- 13:38the club. You know the other names.
- 13:40I know the graphics have been floating around on on social.
- 13:43I have. I'm going to struggle here, I
- 13:45think. Let's go, Barry.
- 13:50Barry Bonds has got to be in there.
- 13:52Yeah, Josh, this is hard. 4040 is just different.
- 14:02Dude. Let's go young a rod, dude.
- 14:17Paul says at least 5050. Paul says at least 50.
- 14:20I agree, I think he's in the 5050 club.
- 14:24And to to that point, a lot of the commentary I'm seeing on it
- 14:28and I would agree in terms of speculating on on what that
- 14:32projection ends up being. People have brought up the fact
- 14:35that his his home runs come in bunches, which I would agree
- 14:38with it if he can get on A roll over this last column of the.
- 14:42Season like thirtyish games. I think it's what do we have
- 14:453232 to 34 games? I I don't put 50.
- 14:53I would love to see a 5050. That's insane.
- 14:55Was Griffey in that, by the way? Sorry, back-to-back to your
- 15:00you're guessing. What do you got, Griffey?
- 15:04Oh, that's a tough one. That's a real tough one.
- 15:12Give me one more guess if I get it wrong you you give me the
- 15:14rest blah, blah blah blah. I.
- 15:20Mean I'm in recent history, Nate.
- 15:24Real recent. Last calendar year.
- 15:28Last year? Who was in the 4040 club last
- 15:34year? Well, he kind of made his own
- 15:36club. Oh yeah.
- 15:40You're going to kick yourself. Yeah, There you go. 4070 Just.
- 15:45Smack you right in the face. Yeah, it's it's kind of weird.
- 15:47You're trying to. You're like 40-40.
- 15:49I don't know whose names have I seen attached to 4040?
- 15:51Well, technically Acuna, but. All right, so I got three names
- 15:55so far. Yeah.
- 15:58Are any of them active? Any of the others?
- 16:01No. Nope, you're missing 2.
- 16:07Obvious ones, I think. I mean, all these names are like
- 16:10superstars. They got to be.
- 16:12Yeah, I think one for you would be more obvious than the other.
- 16:204040 Why do I feel like Alfonso Soriano did it as a national?
- 16:25Huh. As a national 2006 put up a 4641
- 16:28season. By the way, the other names,
- 16:30Acuna last year put up a 4173, a Rod put up a 4246 and 98, and
- 16:37Bonds put up a 4240 in 96. Mind you again, Shohei has a
- 16:43whole another month plus left to play.
- 16:48I mean, these guys are these guys are barely beating the
- 16:50buzzer putting up 40 steals by the end.
- 16:52Like I would imagine in game 161 or 162 Shohei's got another 3034
- 16:58games. Left.
- 16:59I'm going to. I'm going to say Willie, no.
- 17:07All right. The rest is you tell me.
- 17:10Well, the only name you didn't get?
- 17:11Jose Canseco in 1988 with the Oakland A's.
- 17:14Never would have got there and I had no idea he had that in the
- 17:17bag. 4240, which again, another example of a guy that just got
- 17:22it, just beat the buzzer. Yeah, crazy.
- 17:26No idea that he was, he was in that club.
- 17:29Did you see that? I think I read that it would a
- 17:34year to the day when he when he reached the feet on Friday a
- 17:39year prior was the day he tours UCL.
- 17:45Really. Yeah, just.
- 17:47More That's pretty wild. Just another page in the book
- 17:52that is Shohei Otani. Like it's just such a, it truly
- 17:56is a Unicorn story. And I I know that gets thrown
- 17:58around a lot, but like the guy tears his UCLA year to the day
- 18:05joins the 4040 club. It's.
- 18:07It's just, I just think this is, I didn't mean like I'm not
- 18:12coming down on the guy for not having more swipes.
- 18:15I'm not saying that he's like, this is it that this is the only
- 18:19time you're going to see it. I just think it's so insane.
- 18:23I we're going to get into this discussion, but he's my MVP for
- 18:27the fact that like, I can't give you this this year.
- 18:30I'm going to find you a way to give you.
- 18:31I'm going to find a way to give you something else.
- 18:34I got the juice. I'm going to hit homers, but I'm
- 18:37going to find a different way of providing productivity.
- 18:41And I think to me, that's what's most impressive about this.
- 18:44Well, you're not saying that stolen bases is like equivalent
- 18:47to, you know, being an ace on the mound, but like, hey, like
- 18:51you're making up for it for not being able to be in the field.
- 18:55Well, you kind of alluded to it, something that you and I talked
- 18:58about before we hopped on. I wanted to touch on the Frankie
- 19:01Lindor MVP talk because I've seen a lot of that servicing on
- 19:06social and for good reason. He's been, he's been playing
- 19:08especially well as of late. But just looking at his numbers,
- 19:16I'm not, I'm, I'm just, I'm not seeing why we're hearing MVP
- 19:22chants. I don't either.
- 19:23For Francisco Lindor, is he having a a a a respectable
- 19:28season? Yes.
- 19:29Is he having a a season in which he will likely garner MVP votes?
- 19:35Most likely. But he's not your MVP.
- 19:40What? Why are we, why do we have these
- 19:42conversations like if it's a, if it's like a judge versus Otani
- 19:48and Otani's putting or judge is putting up like AL record type
- 19:53home run numbers as as he was two years ago.
- 19:56OK, I, I, I see where that conversation merits the
- 20:03discussion, but it's Francisco Lindor in the year 2024.
- 20:08He's hitting 26927 home runs. 78 RB is 25 bags and a war of 59.
- 20:20That's that right there that it's the war lovers that are
- 20:25having this conversation. It's the manipulation of numbers
- 20:29to like put him in this conversation.
- 20:33I don't I, I haven't looked at numbers recently, but I would
- 20:36argue that like Marcela Zuna would probably get more votes
- 20:40for MVP then Frankie Lindor. And I get like, you know, it's,
- 20:45it's what you're going to argue as far as like, you know, the
- 20:48value of playing a position or being ADH.
- 20:52And I definitely understand playing shortstop every day is
- 20:55not easy, but I'm not there. I don't, I don't know, I this
- 21:01isn't even about like met hate. This is just like very like
- 21:06generic numbers. It's common sense.
- 21:10It's not the. Leader in any category, is he?
- 21:15Let's take a peek here. Played appearances.
- 21:20Games played. Playing every day at shortstop
- 21:23has absolute accomplishment. Like, that's a big deal, but
- 21:28let's not get to the MVP conversation just because of
- 21:32that. I believe he's one of the one of
- 21:33the few left this year that has played in every game.
- 21:37I may be mistaken. I'm.
- 21:38I'm I'm pretty sure that's a big deal.
- 21:40I'm not going to downplay that in any way.
- 21:42That's a huge deal, but especially today, but.
- 21:44But to your point about Ozuna, a war of four two, he's got 37
- 21:48bombs, he's hitting three O 7 and 94 RB is.
- 21:53I don't even know the rest of the home.
- 21:54I mean, you're going to have multiple guys that have more
- 21:56than forty home runs this year and Lindor might not even get to
- 22:0235, likely won't. In In what world does Francisco
- 22:09Lindor win an MVP over Shohei Otani this year?
- 22:12What is with the chance? Is he the MVP of the Mets?
- 22:16Sure. And maybe that's what these fans
- 22:18are are are acknowledging or no. One holds on to that that
- 22:23argument anymore. Most valuable to his team.
- 22:26That's no longer what this is. In no world, not in my world,
- 22:32does Francisco Lindor beat out a Shohei Otani who's hitting
- 22:35nearly 300. He has.
- 22:37He's in the 4040 club and he has a war over six and it's not even
- 22:42September. What are the OP s s looking
- 22:44like? OPS on the year, Shohei.
- 22:49The nines. Shohei IS998, Lindor is 830.
- 22:55Come on guys. There's no category like.
- 22:58There's not even the advanced analytics.
- 23:01You can't make some crafty argument to say that Francisco
- 23:04Lindor, in any scenario, wins an MVP over Show.
- 23:09You dwindle it down to him just playing shortstop versus Otani
- 23:13just being ADH. It's it's not.
- 23:17That's not enough when you're losing in every other offensive
- 23:20category. Not enough.
- 23:24Talk. Separate conversation.
- 23:25Like I said, Lindor playing every day with that contract
- 23:30with the Mets in in the ups and downs there like that is a
- 23:34different accomplishment and that's he deserves praise for
- 23:37that. But I'm out on the MVP stuff.
- 23:41That's this is a joke. Yeah, to your point, separate
- 23:44conversation, Frankie Lindor, let's just say there's people
- 23:46saying that he's overrated, which I think is insane.
- 23:49Like, let's, let's, let's not get overly carried away, yeah?
- 23:53I think there's more of a conversation.
- 23:55I can't believe I'm going to say this.
- 23:57There's more of an argument for Bobby Witt ALMVP compared to
- 24:03Judge versus Lindor compared to Otani for NLMVP.
- 24:10You see what I'm saying? That's a that's a great point.
- 24:12Yeah, that's that's absolutely the truth.
- 24:15I'm not. This isn't even on my radar
- 24:16anymore and it's silly that it's been trending almost.
- 24:19Well, let's let's let's talk about that name.
- 24:21Aaron Judge reached the 50 home run mark and as I'm pulling my
- 24:29notes together, puts up 51. So this is already outdated, but
- 24:34he has reached the 50th Homer threshold for the third time in
- 24:39his career. He did it his rookie year.
- 24:40He did it 2022 when he set the AL home run record and now in
- 24:47the year 2024 has hit 50th or has hit fifty home runs and
- 24:52again, as as Shohei still has, Judge has over a month left to
- 24:58play and he's I think on he's on pace right now.
- 25:01At the last I saw what? Well, actually it may have.
- 25:03Changed because 62 again. Well, that I think that was when
- 25:07when he was at 50. So I'm sure it's putting up 51.
- 25:11Maybe it's it's gone up even one or two.
- 25:13I'm not sure how how the rate works at at that at that point,
- 25:16but we're we're pushing a repeat of of 2022 at at this.
- 25:21Clip Yep, Yep yeah, I and I don't know how often we get to I
- 25:28don't look like I don't know what left to talk about here.
- 25:33I think this is more impressive than 2022.
- 25:35He's hitting over 3/30. His OPS is nearing 1200.
- 25:42He's slugging more than the league average OPS.
- 25:48His slug. I'm going to say that again.
- 25:50His slug is higher than the league average OPS.
- 25:58That is stupid, that is. That's so like, do you, I don't
- 26:05think people, I can't believe I'm going to say this.
- 26:07Do you realize how good you have to be at baseball to to reach
- 26:11that kind of threshold? It's silly, dude.
- 26:14And that's not just like it, it goes without saying, but just to
- 26:18just to emphasize here, that's not just getting hot for like a
- 26:21week with the way averages work over the course of 162 games.
- 26:26In order to do that in and to have that be true at the end of
- 26:31the month of August, you have to be hit the other so so well.
- 26:36That's the other thing is that I don't there was.
- 26:39There were quite literally people saying he needs to be
- 26:43sent down in April. There were.
- 26:46People, I mean, he was hitting very, very bad.
- 26:49He was hitting quite opposite of what he's doing.
- 26:51Now walking around saying that he needs to be sent down in
- 26:54April. So when you're talking about
- 26:56having basically a full month of terrible numbers and you're
- 27:01still doing this, what are we doing?
- 27:07This guy is crazy. That that honestly may go down
- 27:12based on how the rest of the season finishes up.
- 27:15Aaron Judge having a month of below average output may go down
- 27:21as one of those greatest what ifs in baseball history of like
- 27:25if we had, if he had maintained what he's been doing for the
- 27:29majority of the season in that month to start out the season,
- 27:33what, what sort of numbers are we looking at at the end of the
- 27:36year? I think it's the, it's, I mean,
- 27:39we, we can go back to the, to the conversation always.
- 27:43But like it was the, it was the injury in, in spring training
- 27:48didn't get a ton of ABS, but in April he had he, so it was March
- 27:56for 16 at bats at bats, which is stupid.
- 28:01He had a 398 OPS in in those games.
- 28:07In April, he had 100 at bats with an 811 OPS.
- 28:13It's six home runs. I'm speechless.
- 28:19Just jumping in here, Chad, how many home runs we think Aaron
- 28:22Judge is finishing up with by the end of 2024?
- 28:25Does he get to 63? I I'm telling you, man, if there
- 28:29was a, if there was an, and maybe it's due to the fact that
- 28:33he's already hit two home runs a day.
- 28:34And maybe it's just give me a little bit of extra bias here,
- 28:37recency bias. But I just feel like the way
- 28:40he's swinging it this year, there's no way that he just gets
- 28:43to 62 and stops. Yeah.
- 28:46I think the other thing you got to consider is that their
- 28:49strength of schedule is really low the rest of the way out.
- 28:53Like they, I mean, they've got like the A's, they've got the
- 28:56Pirates, They have some bad teams are going to be playing
- 28:58the rest of the way out. And the reason I'm bringing this
- 29:00up is because like you see certain teams, you know, that
- 29:04won't pitch to him. There's certain teams are like,
- 29:07you're not going to beat us. And with a lot of these teams
- 29:12that they're facing the rest of the way out, being out of
- 29:14playoff contention and just out of the conversation, they're
- 29:17going to be like, whatever, like, what do you want us to do?
- 29:20But it helps that, you know, it seems like Glaber in that
- 29:25leadoff spot has been going one of the last few weeks and him
- 29:28getting on Soto being on right now, like there's no option.
- 29:33You can't go around him. And it all comes down to that
- 29:36September needs to be a very good month for the lead off spot
- 29:40and for Soto and Judge will most likely reach these numbers.
- 29:45The first player in MLB history with 50 plus homers, 120 plus RB
- 29:49is and 100 plus walks before September.
- 29:53That's just that I I should have made that the title of the
- 29:56episode before September. It's not even September.
- 30:00I think it was the. What was the other one?
- 30:02It was the IT was three seasons with 50 plus home runs.
- 30:09There's only like 5 other guys. Did you get that down?
- 30:12Players that have hit 50 plus homers in in a season three
- 30:16times babe. Ruth heard of them.
- 30:20Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire and a rod.
- 30:24Which so one name didn't cheat Which which?
- 30:28Which by the way, and I think I tweeted the other day, but one
- 30:31of my favorite Nuggets of Sammy Sosa's career is that he hit 60
- 30:36homers in a in a season three times and didn't lead the league
- 30:40in homers any of those seasons. That tells you the state of
- 30:44offense and the state of of baseball and what was going on
- 30:47at that point. That's all you need.
- 30:49That's all you need to know is to look at.
- 30:51That also. I think Babe did it five times.
- 30:55I think I saw in the Yankee broadcast that he did it five
- 30:58times in his career. Aaron Well, Ruth is the only
- 31:02other Yankee with three obviously as a list up list, but
- 31:07the only other Yankee with three plus seasons of 50 plus Homer.
- 31:10So I think, yeah, I think I did see that it was it was over
- 31:13three, but. Just because a rod only stupid
- 31:16numbers a rod only did it one time as a Yankee but.
- 31:19Yeah, just stupid. And then as you mentioned, kind
- 31:23of tying a ball on this, we're looking at a possible Triple
- 31:27Crown here. If if it wasn't if it wasn't for
- 31:30Bobby Witt Junior. I know, I know.
- 31:34Like we're looking at easy MVP, easy, easy Triple Crown.
- 31:41Yeah, and I'm not going to be that guy that tears down Bobby
- 31:46Witt in his season. No, absolutely not to.
- 31:48Build up Aaron Judge's conversation.
- 31:51I do think Aaron Judge is the MVP, but Bobby Witt is going to
- 31:55do this quite literally for the next decade.
- 31:59And. He's going to win a few, so just
- 32:01give this one to judge because you're going to be fine moving
- 32:04forward. Let's put this in perspective.
- 32:08We've been talking about Aaron Judge's tear the last what, four
- 32:14months of the season? The fact that we're coming up on
- 32:20the end of the season, we have a month plus left and he's still,
- 32:24Bobby Witt is still in the conversation, the same
- 32:27conversation. It shows how how good.
- 32:30It shows how good of a season Bobby Witt is having with the
- 32:33fact we're not we're not putting them on on on equal pedestals
- 32:37here. I think, I think it's safe to
- 32:39say Aaron Judge with with what he's done.
- 32:42We'll, we'll probably, I don't even want to say run away with
- 32:45the MVP, but I I think that's is somewhat of an easier
- 32:50conversation than maybe some are labeling it to be.
- 32:53But the fact that you're still even in the same breath at this
- 32:59stage of the season tells you just how insane of a year you're
- 33:03having. It's legit, dude.
- 33:04It's legit. And again, playing shortstop
- 33:07everyday premier position I and that's probably another reason
- 33:11why I think this season's better than 2022 for Judge that he's
- 33:15playing center field every day different.
- 33:19Got to respect it. Speaking of respect, Scott
- 33:22Service got no respects on the way out the door in Seattle.
- 33:27Got fired this past week, just just short of the weekend.
- 33:32I think it was what, Thursday? After almost nine full seasons
- 33:37with the Mariners, he started back in 2016, was shown the way
- 33:42to the door, but not before he was made aware of his firing via
- 33:50text alert. I don't know if you saw that.
- 33:51Didn't even didn't know that. Didn't even get to find out.
- 33:55That's a big wrinkle. In person found out via text
- 33:59alert that he was being let go. Alert as in like in like a
- 34:02Twitter notification? What do you mean?
- 34:04I think it let me see here it was.
- 34:08It was a count roser. If you're saying text alert,
- 34:12yeah. I didn't say it.
- 34:14He he got the he got the notification from Ken Rose from
- 34:18a Ken Rosenthal tweet that he was being let go.
- 34:21I read that it I'm reading here 90 minutes, 90 minutes before he
- 34:28had his meeting. Shit, he was sitting on that for
- 34:301/2 an hour going well this is this is nice.
- 34:36I I support the decision. I it's hard to it's hard to
- 34:40argue at this point. Is is is Scott Service
- 34:44responsible for the fact that they've had the worst offense in
- 34:48baseball, maybe short of the White Sox, for the last however
- 34:53many months? Is that on Scott Service?
- 34:55I think it's AI think it's definitely a perfect storm of a
- 34:59scenario and I think he's got to be the fall guy, unfortunately.
- 35:03I get it and and we talk about this all the time.
- 35:05Anytime a manager goes, you, you don't even really necessarily
- 35:08look at what they've done. You just look at what the team
- 35:11or like you, what they've done. As a manager, you just you have
- 35:14to default to look into what the team does and then that dictates
- 35:17whether or not they stick around.
- 35:18It's it's sucks, but that's just how it works.
- 35:20You have to have a fall guy like you said.
- 35:22But it, it, it wasn't the decision.
- 35:25It was. I don't know if you heard any of
- 35:27the OR read any of the quotes after the fact, but I saw that
- 35:31Jerry Dapoto had just plenty of things to say after the fact.
- 35:37One of the things did not sit well with me.
- 35:42One of the one of the things I read, he said Collectively, we
- 35:44determined that our organization needed this.
- 35:47First of all, that's not how you start.
- 35:50That's not how you start that conversation.
- 35:52That's not how you get the ball rolling.
- 35:53Hey, we needed this guy gone. This guy that I call my friend.
- 35:57The this this long time friend, we we needed him gone.
- 36:02That's not how you just basic PR one O 1.
- 36:05That's not how you start that conversation.
- 36:07He says collectively, we determine that our organization
- 36:09needed this. We needed to do something to
- 36:11create a different theme, a different vibe in our clubhouse.
- 36:15I'm not trying to throw Scott under the bus at all here.
- 36:17I can't say enough positive things about the things he did
- 36:20in contributing here, but I do think we needed a new voice.
- 36:24And then I didn't even I didn't get the the tail end of the
- 36:26quote. But he goes on to say like,
- 36:29yeah, we, I, I still think we can make a, a run at this.
- 36:32We can make a push at this. And I'm going, this isn't
- 36:37Philly. You can't just bring in, you
- 36:38can't bring in Philly, Rob, and expect things to just turn
- 36:41around on a dime. Like they clearly the the issues
- 36:45in Seattle run far deeper than who's at the who's at the
- 36:48managerial seat. I don't disagree.
- 36:53I don't disagree. I think the timing of it does
- 36:55make sense, like if we're going to do it, might as well try to
- 36:59use this as some kind of spark to sneak in.
- 37:03I suppose. I I do get that a little bit.
- 37:07Sorry, I'm looking at yeah, he was only there for 30 games.
- 37:13So I saw this Cameron Maven podcast clip.
- 37:21He's a guest on some podcast and I, I like Cameron Maven.
- 37:26I don't know, like how if you've heard like very many interviews,
- 37:28he's always kept it real. Like he's always been very
- 37:31straightforward. Great clubhouse guy Everywhere
- 37:35he goes. I looked at, I was looking at
- 37:39his game like this BR page. And I guess it's only been, it
- 37:43was only 30 games that he was in the Mariners clubhouse.
- 37:47But he said he's like, I've been around a lot of different
- 37:51managers, a lot of different teams, lot of different
- 37:54clubhouses. And he's like, I there's certain
- 37:58managers that say my door is always open.
- 38:01And there's a lot of managers that mean that.
- 38:04And there's a lot of managers that don't.
- 38:07And he's like, there's a lot of names that if you go knocking on
- 38:11that door, it's not going well. They don't want confrontation,
- 38:14they don't want conversation. It's all business and he's like
- 38:18for me and I would probably say for a few other guys, it's got
- 38:22service was a lot like that. Not as approachable as you would
- 38:26want or some of these guys nowadays would want.
- 38:29Whether you're for that or against that, that's for you to
- 38:33decide. You and I have talked about how
- 38:35much like there is this level of old school manager that I miss
- 38:39in the game. There's this gut feel, there's
- 38:42this, you know, respect of a manager versus this buddy,
- 38:49buddy, I just want to be boys with you.
- 38:51That like has now kind of dominated a manager mentality.
- 38:57You know, you can go to you can go to war for your players and
- 39:00you can be a player manager, but there's still this level of
- 39:04respect that I think needs to be had.
- 39:07But yeah, it's just kind of that was interesting.
- 39:10And it like, I don't know, like those are those are opinions
- 39:13we'd rarely get to hear about. We never really get to see what
- 39:16what it's like behind the curtain.
- 39:18So maybe there was a little bit of that going on.
- 39:23Maybe that, you know, some of these guys weren't loving going
- 39:27to battle for Scott service every day.
- 39:31Regardless what side of the the the fence you're on with, the
- 39:35style of managing the Scott Service brings the table the the
- 39:41downfall that the Mariners witnessed this season.
- 39:45And again, not they're still technically time, but from where
- 39:49they were to where they are now, truly insane.
- 39:55From Optus stats on Twitter, Scott Service is the first
- 39:58manager in MLB history to have a 10 plus game lead in the
- 40:01division or league prior to 1969, but then be fired before
- 40:07the end of the season. They were out 10 games in June.
- 40:13And they fired Scott Service in a span of 65 days.
- 40:18That's bad. Two months.
- 40:21We're not talking. We're not talking like May,
- 40:24We're not talking April like hey, you got a 10 game lead
- 40:27because it's a terrible start. Like June is deep.
- 40:31June is a deep enough. I'm not saying you got to hold
- 40:34on to a double digit lead in the division, but there's no reason
- 40:38why it should flip flop the way it did.
- 40:41Now they're seven games back in the wild card.
- 40:43We're talking about other teams being dead in the water with
- 40:46with less work to do than the Mariners.
- 40:51I'm all done. The division's the only hope,
- 40:54but need we remind you who you're up against in that fight?
- 40:58Not not going to work out. Not going to work out and some
- 41:06some positive news here. The Washington Nationals are
- 41:08calling up Dylan Cruz, their number three or the the #3
- 41:12prospect in in baseball for his debut on Monday versus the
- 41:16Yankees. I'm pretty surprised because I
- 41:21don't I haven't checked in in a while but like I last I saw a
- 41:24few months ago he wasn't doing great.
- 41:26Sitting 272 with 13 jacks, 68 ribbies in 99 games between AA
- 41:33and AAA. Where do you have a call up?
- 41:37In my opinion, in a season where got nothing to lose, why not?
- 41:41I'm excited, dude. I, I'm, I'm not going to sit
- 41:45here and lie and say like I've, I've kept tabs on cruise
- 41:47throughout his minor league stint, but that that was a name
- 41:51when he got drafted. You know, you see, you see the
- 41:53clips, the highlights, the style of play, you see the comps.
- 41:57There was a lot of people clamouring for him to be number
- 41:59one overall pick before skins. Yeah, that, you know, it's just
- 42:03that that was a guy that I was like, all right, like in the
- 42:05nationals organization. I'll have a chance, I would
- 42:08imagine to to catch him and some live action.
- 42:11So I'm excited to see see him show what he can do.
- 42:16And I'm especially excited for the future.
- 42:18That outfield man you got you got Cruz, now you got James Wood
- 42:23and then you've got this. What is it?
- 42:26Jacob Young, he's already got he's pushing 30 bags.
- 42:31I think I saw he's got like 20 double S to see like it's.
- 42:35And that's got something going, man.
- 42:36I'm excited for that outfield man.
- 42:39Give it a few years. That's that's going to be good.
- 42:42Yeah. I'm excited to see what he does.
- 42:43I mean, there's there's like a swagger and confidence that he
- 42:47has. You saw it through the College
- 42:50World Series, saw it through the draft, you know, good looking
- 42:55dude. Like, yeah, there's it's going
- 42:59to be good. What was the Moneyball quote?
- 43:04It's like he's ugly. He doesn't.
- 43:05You can't keep a girlfriend or something like that.
- 43:08So he's got no confidence. The old scout love that.
- 43:13Movie his. Girlfriend's ugly.
- 43:16He's got no confidence. Speaking of having no
- 43:20confidence, well, no, I take that back.
- 43:24He's going to land on his feet. Jason Hayward DFA by the Dodgers
- 43:28in in a corresponding move bringing back Chris Taylor off
- 43:34the IL. The team decided that they
- 43:36wanted to keep Kevin Kier Meyer as their lefty off the bench.
- 43:44So they got they have some depth.
- 43:47I wouldn't call it great depth necessarily, but I mean they
- 43:50have some names. There were it was sort of
- 43:53creating a little bit of a depth log jam, if you will.
- 43:56So they had to say ID OS to Jason Hayward venture to say
- 44:01somebody picks him up now he so to revisit the the conversation
- 44:07we're having. What was it last week about
- 44:10being playoff eligible? He will be eligible if somebody
- 44:13picks him up before the end of the month.
- 44:17I could see that, yeah. I mean, this seems like a no
- 44:20brainer, right? It's like somebody's picking up
- 44:22Jason Hayward. I could see it.
- 44:23Yeah. I no need to look at numbers.
- 44:27I think we all know you know what I mean?
- 44:29Like he's not he's not anything. Well.
- 44:31I've got numbers here for you. He's flashing 2O8289 and 393 /
- 44:36197 plate appearances. Well, there you go.
- 44:40Yeah, I, I think it's more So what the impact of him leaving.
- 44:51He's a big part of that Dodger clubhouse.
- 44:54I think him, Mookie and Freddie are like very close.
- 44:58I think he was very, very close to Freddie.
- 45:03That's a tough Nate. That's a tough blow, you know
- 45:05what I mean? And it was I think the
- 45:10corresponding move, I know you said that they had depth.
- 45:12I think the corresponding mood was specifically around Chris
- 45:15Taylor. Yeah, that's what I said, right?
- 45:17Oh, OK. Yeah, I brought him back off the
- 45:19aisle. Or at least I think I said that.
- 45:21I thought it what was the other name you said where they had
- 45:24depth? OK, well Kevin Kiermer.
- 45:27Kevin Kiermer was another name that people were speculating.
- 45:30OK, when Chris Cheddar comes back, is he going to be the guy
- 45:32to go? But they decided to to go with
- 45:33him. Yeah, I there's just, there's
- 45:37aspects to athleticism and and things that Kevin Kiermer can do
- 45:41that Jason Hayward I think plays still pretty good defense, but
- 45:45it's just like this clubhouse presence that I'm curious to see
- 45:49that's that's a tough blow. That's a gut punch.
- 45:51And you can like there's certain names that people talk about
- 45:54when they release. It's like this one was harder.
- 45:57This was a hard one, I think. But I I could see him going
- 46:00somewhere, I don't know where, what sounds good.
- 46:09Some of the one of these teams on the outskirts bring it back
- 46:16as a Cub, you know. I mean, why?
- 46:21Why bother though with that? I don't know, you know.
- 46:24I feel bad for him. I feel bad that like I, I, I
- 46:28look at his hitting mechanics and I'm like, something could,
- 46:31could have gotten fixed here. Something could have been
- 46:34changed and it's just it went too long, probably got stuck in
- 46:40his ways mechanically. You stick around.
- 46:44What? He did is a brave when he came
- 46:46up. Dude, Jason Hayward is a guy
- 46:49that really, I don't want to say helps me, but for lack of a
- 46:54better way of saying it, Jason Hayward is a guy that helps me
- 46:57realize how old I am because I remember watching his debut.
- 47:01I do too. And I'm like 99% sure that was
- 47:04it. Missile in right field.
- 47:06Yeah, and that was it, that it was Turner.
- 47:08At that point I was like, man, this guy could be something
- 47:12special. And here we are talking about,
- 47:13well, you know, he's, he could get picked up.
- 47:15Maybe won't, maybe, maybe might not.
- 47:17I don't know. It's tough, old man getting old.
- 47:23Last thing we got here, Danny Jansen set to make some, some
- 47:29very strange history. Danny Jansen of the Red Sox.
- 47:37It's official, I believe. I think, I think manager Alex
- 47:40Gore has announced, following just a a horrendous,
- 47:44embarrassing sweep at the hands of the Arizona Diamondbacks this
- 47:47weekend, has announced that Monday, Danny Jansen will be
- 47:51substituting in for Reese McGuire, who is no longer on the
- 47:54team as part of the resumption of the June 26 game with the
- 48:01Blue Jays, who the Red Sox acquired him from via trade.
- 48:06The the. Why just cooking right now?
- 48:12That's the loudest possible way. Hey, you should get in the GRUB
- 48:16ready. Get in the GRUB ready.
- 48:17It's all right. Hey, perfect timing.
- 48:19We're about to wrap up. Here, that's true.
- 48:22Meaning he will not. This is according to MLB score
- 48:25changes on Twitter by the way. Meaning he will not be.
- 48:27He will not only become the first player to play for both
- 48:29teams in the same game in MLB history, but he will catch the
- 48:32at bat that he himself started and must be pinch hit for that
- 48:37part's. I don't I don't understand any
- 48:40of that. How do we get this guy out?
- 48:43The the last instant, the last instance that I can recall if
- 48:48something weird happening like this was Soto.
- 48:53Wasn't this his? Was this his rookie year with
- 48:57the Nats? Do you remember this?
- 49:00I thought there was something that happened more recently than
- 49:02that. No, well, it's very possible,
- 49:05but I I thought what in the world was that?
- 49:16It was like the Oh yeah, that's what it was.
- 49:20Juan Soto hits his home run before his MLB debut.
- 49:23This is just a quick excerpt that I'm seeing on Google.
- 49:26Soto will still be eligible to play when this suspended game
- 49:28resumed Monday at Nationals Park.
- 49:31And as a pinch hitter in the 6th inning, the rookie launched A2
- 49:33run Homer near the concourse in the second deck in right field
- 49:36to provide the difference in Washington's five through
- 49:38victory. So I think if I recall, yeah, he
- 49:42like pinch hit and then the game got suspended because of
- 49:47weather, I believe. And that.
- 49:50Yeah, just just another weird baseball thing where it's like,
- 49:53you know, that and I I saw people tweeting about it.
- 49:55It's like this game, you think about how long this game has
- 49:58been around and yet we still see things like this where it's
- 50:01just, it doesn't make sense. It's history, but very weird
- 50:05history at the end of the day. And.
- 50:11It's. I'll, I mean, I'm, I'll be tuned
- 50:14in, that's for sure, but it's going to be hard to wrap my head
- 50:17around what I'm what I'm witnessing.
- 50:19So. Yeah, it's weird.
- 50:21That's really weird. I mean though.
- 50:24That's kind of that's kind of all us Red Sox fans have to
- 50:26really look forward to these days, I guess after a sweep.
- 50:29And pretty much, I mean, I'm not officially kissing the
- 50:31postseason chances goodbye, but I mean, you get swept at home by
- 50:35the D backs. We do have our bet coming up
- 50:37here in a few weeks. Not looking up.
- 50:39Great. Yeah.
- 50:39I don't even know if I'm really looking forward to that, if I'm
- 50:41being honest with you, I think I'm.
- 50:43Looking forward to the result. Maybe just roll, just roll Aaron
- 50:46Judge out there by himself. I'm.
- 50:48Down. Should be all right, the bugs,
- 50:50you guys, you guys probably, yeah, probably stand a pretty
- 50:52good chance there. See, I'll be locked in for that,
- 50:56but I'm not I'm not really watching with much optimism.
- 51:00So that'll be that'll be some cool, some cool history to to
- 51:04witness. But other than that, Nah Nah,
- 51:07You got anything else before we get out of here?
- 51:10That's it, That's it. One more in August and then we
- 51:13made it through. Dog days will be over, then
- 51:15we're in the home stretch. September is going to be big
- 51:20time, big time. Big time we get let's let's cook
- 51:25up some some fun content for September.
- 51:28I feel like we got a, we got a fun month ahead of us.
- 51:31Yeah, we've got. Up.
- 51:32I think things have started. Yeah, we get.
- 51:34We probably need to say RIP to a few teams pretty soon.
- 51:38Yeah, let's get let's start gearing up for the farewells.
- 51:40That's always fun. Well, I mean, depending upon who
- 51:45you're saying farewell to. But yeah, let's, let's, let's
- 51:49cook some stuff up for, for September and then really get
- 51:52primed for a post, a fun post season.
- 51:55Cause like we, like we talked about, the picture is relatively
- 52:02clear. I would say at this point at
- 52:04the, but now we're just trying to figure out seeding for a lot
- 52:08of these teams. But who knows, anything can
- 52:11happen in a month. So as predictable as it may be
- 52:14at this point, as we approach the end of the month, we could
- 52:18be seeing some surprises. And that's why September, I
- 52:21think will be a fun month of baseball.
- 52:23So be sure to stick around with the three out take.
