- 0:00I hold in my hand a book written by Andrew Bonar.
- 0:08It is a biography of a man by the name of Robert Murray
- 0:12McShane. Over my years of living, which
- 0:18has been 67 of them almost 68, I've read many biographies.
- 0:26But there's one biography that stands head and tails above them
- 0:31all, and it's this one. It's about a man whose ministry
- 0:40spanned 6 1/2 years. He lived to be 29 years of age.
- 0:52He died 2 weeks before his 30th birthday.
- 0:57He pretty much turned Scotland upside down with the gospel.
- 1:05He pastored Dundee Church in Scotland and yet his ministry
- 1:13only spanned 6 1/2 years when he died.
- 1:22Historians tell us that 7000 people gathered as memorial.
- 1:31That was in an age where there was no television, no social
- 1:35media. Word was given by horseback or
- 1:40word of mouth to make sure others heard about what had
- 1:45taken place. So by the time he died and the
- 1:48time they gave the memorial service a few days later, 7000
- 1:52people would gather to celebrate the life of one man who turns
- 2:00Scotland upside down with the Gospel.
- 2:05In fact, it was Charles Spurgeon who said these words about Mr.
- 2:10McShane. He said, this is the This is one
- 2:13of the best and most profitable volumes ever published.
- 2:18The memoir of such a man ought to surely be in the hands of
- 2:21every Christian and certainly every preacher of the Gospel.
- 2:28The Memoirs and Remains of Robert Murray McShane by Andrew
- 2:34Bonar stands heads and tails above every other biography
- 2:42written by any other man simply because in 6 1/2 years he turned
- 2:50country upside down. I have on my desk in my office a
- 2:59quote by Mr. Mcchain, and that quote stares me in the face
- 3:05every time I open my Bible, every time I sit in my chair.
- 3:11This is the quote. In fact, I think it's the best
- 3:15quote ever given for any pastor who's ever lived.
- 3:22This is what it says. Mr. McShane is writing to a
- 3:28fellow colleague in his letter explains this.
- 3:33Do not forget the culture of the inner man, I mean of the heart.
- 3:41How diligently the cavalry officer keeps his Saber clean
- 3:45and sharp. Every stain he rubs off with the
- 3:49greatest care. Remember, you are God's sword,
- 3:56his instrument. I trust a chosen vessel unto him
- 4:01to bear his name in great measure, according to the purity
- 4:08and perfections of the instrument, will be the success.
- 4:13It is not great talents God blesses so much as great
- 4:19likeness to Jesus. A holy minister is an awful
- 4:26weapon in the hand of God. That is what characterized the
- 4:33life of Robert Murray McShane, something about a holy
- 4:42instrument being the most awful weapon in the hand of the living
- 4:47God. And it's a reminder to us as
- 4:52fathers. It's a reminder to us as
- 4:56leaders, especially a reminder to us as pastors, that as God's
- 5:04chosen vessels, you're used by God for the glory of his
- 5:09precious name. But the Memoirs and Remains of
- 5:17Robert Murray McShane is a book about one man's life.
- 5:22It's a biography. And as great as the biography
- 5:26is, there is a greater biography.
- 5:33In fact, there are 4 authors of that biography, Matthew, Mark,
- 5:39Luke and John. And yet their biography is not
- 5:45about a man necessarily who lived a great life.
- 5:51It's about the God man who gives life, the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 6:00And we are about to embark on a study of the Gospel of John,
- 6:04John's unique gospel, which by the way, 93% of John is not in
- 6:09the other three gospels. So it is unique.
- 6:14It's written 20 to 30 years after the other writers wrote
- 6:21about the Christ. But John's Gospel is so unique
- 6:28that he gives us the Christmas story in four English words,
- 6:36four Greek words. He gives us the Christmas story
- 6:43at its greatest description, and he does it without any of the
- 6:49historical figures, but with all the theological facts.
- 6:55That's what makes John's gospel so unique.
- 7:00The gospel is found in verse 14 of chapter one.
- 7:05In four words. The Word became flesh.
- 7:15That's the Christmas story. No Mary, no Joseph, no
- 7:21shepherds, no Bethlehem, no Manger, no cradle, no sheep, no
- 7:29hay, just the Word became flesh. The historical figures are are
- 7:40unique in and of themselves, but the theological facts are what
- 7:48defined for us. Christmas, the Word became flesh
- 7:57and the Word is defined in verse #1 of John's Gospel first
- 8:02chapter where it says that in the beginning was the Word and
- 8:10the Word was with God and the Word was God or literally God
- 8:15was the Word. And so you realize that that God
- 8:22became flesh. It's a summation of the Old
- 8:28Testaments theological facts about Christmas.
- 8:35But in the Old Testament it's in one word, and in the New
- 8:39Testament it's in 4 words. But the one word in the Old
- 8:44Testament is translated with four words, and that's found in
- 8:51Isaiah 7 verse #14 and that is Emmanuel, which translated means
- 9:01God is with us. So 4 words in the Old Testament,
- 9:094 words in the New Testament give us all we need to know
- 9:13about the Christmas story and we are about to embark on the
- 9:20greatest story of the greatest man, whoever lived Jesus Christ
- 9:30our Lord. Such a unique gospel as John
- 9:37writes it. It was Martin Luther who said
- 9:43that this book is the unique and tender and genuine chief gospel.
- 9:55You see, John is more than a biography.
- 9:58John is the gospel. It's the good news.
- 10:03The gospel writers, writers give us the gospel of Jesus Christ
- 10:07our Lord. It screams nothing but good
- 10:11news. They just do it from different
- 10:15perspectives. It was William Barkley in his
- 10:20commentary on John who said this.
- 10:22For many Christian people, the Gospel According to Saint John
- 10:27is the most precious book in the New Testament.
- 10:30It is the book on which, above all, they feed their minds and
- 10:35nourish their hearts, and in which they rest their souls.
- 10:41For John has the most penetrating gaze of all the New
- 10:46Testament writers into the eternal mysteries and the
- 10:51eternal truths and the mind of God.
- 10:56Many people find themselves closer to God and Jesus Christ
- 11:03in John than in any other book in the world.
- 11:12Most of us, as new believers, began our reading in the Gospel
- 11:17of John. And that's because John's Gospel
- 11:21is written with simplicity. It's written with sublime words.
- 11:32In fact, very, very often he describes everything in no more
- 11:38than two syllables. Every once in a while he will
- 11:41embark on a three syllable word, but for the most part, it's the
- 11:45easiest gospel to read. So let me, as we introduce to
- 11:52you the Gospel of John, give you the ABC's of our introduction.
- 11:57First of all, the author, then the background, then the
- 12:02characteristics, and then your decision, the AB CS.
- 12:09By way of introduction, let's talk first of all about the
- 12:15author. John's name is not mentioned by
- 12:21him. He doesn't say that he is the
- 12:23author. He's referred to 10 different
- 12:27times in his gospel, but five times he's referred to as the
- 12:35disciple whom Jesus loved. In fact, it says over in John 13
- 12:48now they were leaning on Jesus's bosom, one of his disciples whom
- 12:52Jesus loved. That's how he refers to himself.
- 13:01And think about that with me, if you will.
- 13:07Jesus never asked John, do you love me?
- 13:14But he asked Peter, do you love me?
- 13:19But never asked John that question.
- 13:22In fact, he asked Peter that question.
- 13:25And the response was if you love me, feed my sheep.
- 13:28If you love me, tend to my lambs.
- 13:31If you love me, do this. But to John he said this John
- 13:37chapter 19, verse #26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother and the
- 13:46disciples standing by whom he loved, he saith unto his mother,
- 13:51Woman, behold your son. They looked at John and said,
- 14:00Behold your mother as Christ hung on the cross.
- 14:06As he thought about his mother. He entrusted his mother into the
- 14:11care of one man, the man who knew he was loved by the Lord
- 14:19and the man who truly loved his God.
- 14:24Historians tell us that that John cared for for Mary until
- 14:30she died. But it's interesting to note
- 14:38that even though he was known as the disciple whom Jesus loved,
- 14:43he was also known as Bornegas, a son of Thunder.
- 14:51In fact, he had a brother named James.
- 14:55They were called the Sons of Thunder.
- 14:58So even though he was the disciple whom Jesus loved, and
- 15:02even though he was the one that Jesus truly loved and entrusted
- 15:05his mother to, he was an impetuous man.
- 15:11He was a ferocious man. He was an explosive man.
- 15:18He was the one who wanted to call fire down from heaven to
- 15:21consume those who would not follow Christ or believe in
- 15:24Christ. This is the disciple whom Jesus
- 15:27loved. In fact, he says in his epistle
- 15:32in first John 3 verse #1 he says, oh, what manner of love is
- 15:38this that the Father has bestowed upon us, that we should
- 15:43be called the children of God? The word he uses this pot of
- 15:49pen, which means something that's from another world, from
- 15:53a from another, not not just another generation, but
- 15:57something that's otherworldly. What other worldly kind of love
- 16:01is this that the father would bestow upon us that we should be
- 16:04called the children of God. John was so overwhelmed with
- 16:08with God's love because he was such a ferocious man.
- 16:13He was called the son of Thunder along with the brother James.
- 16:18And yet God loved him and he recognized that and he responded
- 16:25to that in a very unique and and special way.
- 16:32And John, as he writes, first John, second John, and 3rd John,
- 16:40you'll notice the great contrast because John was somebody who
- 16:44was not a Gray man. He was a black and white man.
- 16:48Everything he wrote was in black and white, stark contrasts.
- 16:53Contrast like light versus darkness, life versus death,
- 16:58spirit versus flesh, the redeemed and the lost, the
- 17:06righteous and the unrighteous. He was a man of stark contrast.
- 17:12He didn't mince words. He made it very clear what he
- 17:16believed and what others would believe if they were true
- 17:21followers of Christ. Because he was a true follower
- 17:26of Christ. He truly loved the Lord and was
- 17:29overwhelmed that the Lord would even love him.
- 17:37I wonder if if you are in that category of people who are
- 17:42overwhelmed that God would even love you.
- 17:49The Bible says that God loves the world.
- 17:54I I don't understand that. I don't grasp that magnitude of
- 17:58love, But God's love is uniquely different than ours.
- 18:04It's infinite. Ours is finite.
- 18:08His is perfect, ours is imperfect.
- 18:12But John was able to recognize God's love for him and he
- 18:18responded in a way by helping other people know how they could
- 18:23be loved by God as well. What a a great man he was.
- 18:32At the end of his life, he was banished to the Isle of Patmos.
- 18:39He was the only one of the 12 that we know of that was not
- 18:44martyred. He died an old man, but before
- 18:50he died he was exiled to the Isle of Patmos, in which he
- 18:56would receive the great revelation of the return of
- 18:59Christ. His writing was somewhere around
- 19:0395 or 96 AD, which is very important to understand because
- 19:10he was exiled under the reign of Domitian and Domitian reign from
- 19:1688 AD to 98 AD and he was exiled to that island was able to
- 19:25receive the glorious vision of the return of Christ in the Book
- 19:29of Revelation. Explains all you need to know
- 19:33about the return of Jesus Christ our Lord.
- 19:38But that's the author. How about some background
- 19:44concerning the Gospel of John? John does it differently than
- 19:52Matthew, Mark, and Luke. They they, they write as if they
- 19:59have a videographer with them and they're videotaping as they
- 20:04move along through the life of Christ.
- 20:08But John is more a snapshot kind of guy.
- 20:14He gives you snapshot of this, then a snapshot of that, a
- 20:18snapshot of this, then a snapshot of that.
- 20:21He doesn't do it necessarily in a chronological order, but in a
- 20:24very systematic kind of way to prove his point.
- 20:30In fact there are 4 gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
- 20:34Matthew, Mark, and Luke are called the Synoptic Gospels, but
- 20:38each of them has an emphasis and I think you need to grasp this
- 20:44because each gospel is an elongated version of one verse
- 20:54of the Old Testament. Let me explain it to you.
- 20:59The book of Matthew is all about the royalty of the Messiah.
- 21:08The King has come. So Matthew writes about the king
- 21:15and his Kingdom and all of his royalty.
- 21:21And in Matthew's Gospel you have a genealogy that traces the
- 21:27lineage of Christ back to David so that you will know that he is
- 21:35the rightful heir to the throne, that he is the son of David.
- 21:41He is the king of Israel, very unique.
- 21:47The Gospel of Matthew and you can write in in gold letters
- 21:51across the top of the book of Matthew.
- 21:56Behold your king phrase taken from Zechariah 9 verse #9 So one
- 22:05verse Zechariah 99, Behold your king is unfolded for you in the
- 22:10Gospel of Matthew. You come to the book of Mark,
- 22:17Mark's Gospel. So while Matthew emphasizes his
- 22:21royalty, Mark emphasizes his humility because he emphasizes
- 22:29the servanthood of the Messiah. So when you read the Gospel of
- 22:33Mark, you have one keyword that is spread all throughout the
- 22:36gospel, and it's the word immediately because servants act
- 22:43immediately when it comes to accomplishing their task.
- 22:50And Mark's gospel has a unique emphasis on the hands, arms, and
- 22:56feet of the Messiah because it's the hands and the feet and the
- 23:00arms of the servant that do all the work.
- 23:06And so you can write across the Gospel of Mark these words.
- 23:12Behold, my servant, Isaiah 42 verse #1 So Zechariah 99 is
- 23:22unfolded in the Gospel of Matthew, and Isaiah 42 verse #1
- 23:28is unfolded in the Gospel of Mark.
- 23:31You with me so far, you taking good notes.
- 23:35I hope so, because you'll be quizzed on this before you leave
- 23:38today. I'm just kidding you.
- 23:41Then you come to the Gospel of Luke.
- 23:44Oh, by the way, Mark has no genealogy in it.
- 23:49Why? Because nobody cares about where
- 23:51a servant's from. That's important to understand
- 23:56that. Then you come to the Gospel of
- 23:57Luke. Luke is all about the humanity
- 24:02of Christ, and Luke has a genealogy, but the genealogy
- 24:11that Luke gives goes all the way back to Adam to prove the
- 24:17humanity of the Messiah. He is the Son of man.
- 24:24And so you can write in gold across the top of the Gospel of
- 24:28Luke. Zechariah chapter 6 verse #12
- 24:33Behold a man. So Zechariah 6 verse #12 is
- 24:42unfolded in Luke's Gospel. Then you recognize that Isaiah
- 24:48chapter 42 verse #1 is unfolded in Luke's and Mark's Gospel.
- 24:53Zechariah 99 is unfolded in Matthew's Gospel.
- 25:00Then you come to the Gospel of John, and John's emphasis is on
- 25:06the deity of Christ. See if Matthew on his royalty,
- 25:12Luke, excuse me, Mark on his humility, Luke on his humanity,
- 25:18and John on his deity, the Son of the living God.
- 25:28And there you're right across the top of the Gospel of Luke,
- 25:31Isaiah chapter 35 verse #4 which says, behold your God.
- 25:40See that? So one verse in the Old
- 25:44Testament is magnified in each of the Gospels in a very
- 25:50specific and strategic way by the Spirit of God, All of us
- 25:57inspired by God. But but Matthew's going to
- 26:00unfold his kingship and Mark's going to unfold his, his
- 26:06humiliation as a servant. And Luke's going to show us that
- 26:11he's the, he's the Son of man, his humanity, humanity that
- 26:18wraps around deity. And then when you come to the
- 26:24Gospel of John, it's all about the Son of God.
- 26:29He is the Word that became flesh and dwelt among us.
- 26:39What an incredible understanding of how the Old Testament
- 26:45introduces to us the New Testament.
- 26:49Now the New Testament is able to fulfill all that was spoken in
- 26:54the Old Testament to show us the continuity of the Spirit of God
- 26:58as He begins to show us the beauty of all that's there.
- 27:05Now, John's gospel does not contain certain elements.
- 27:10John's gospel does not contain the birth of Christ.
- 27:15It doesn't contain the baptism of Christ.
- 27:20It doesn't contain the temptations of Christ.
- 27:24It doesn't contain the ascension of Christ.
- 27:30In fact, it it doesn't contain the Lord's Supper, it doesn't
- 27:37contain Gethsemane. In fact, John's Gospel has no
- 27:49parables in it. None.
- 27:53Interesting to note that John would not discuss any of the
- 27:58parables of our Lord. You also realize that in John's
- 28:09Gospel of the miracles he chooses, not one miracle deals
- 28:18with demonic activity in casting out demons.
- 28:24Not one. But John does tell us about the
- 28:30first miracle, the wedding at Cana of Galilee.
- 28:35The other gospels do not. He talks to us about the
- 28:40narrative with Nicodemus about what it means to be born again.
- 28:44The other gospels do not. He incorporates that the the
- 28:50woman at the well and the conversation he has with her The
- 28:56the other gospels do not. In fact he includes the raising
- 29:06of Lazarus, what's the other gospels do not.
- 29:12He also includes the washing of the disciples feet, What's the
- 29:21other gospels do not? And he incorporates in his book
- 29:28all that took place on the eve before the crucifixion when it
- 29:33came to discussing the ultimate comforter that would come the
- 29:38Holy Spirit. The other gospels do not.
- 29:44And then of course, he records the High priestly prayer of
- 29:47Christ, which the other disciples or other apostles do
- 29:54not. So there's a lot of uniqueness
- 29:57to John's Gospel that sets it apart from the synoptic Gospels,
- 30:03Matthew, Mark, and Luke. For John's emphasis is proving
- 30:10the deity of Christ, that Jesus is the Son of God.
- 30:18So when the the Mormons come to your door and they say that
- 30:21Jesus is a brother of Lucifer, you say, no, he's not, he's the
- 30:27Son of God. When the Jehovah's Witnesses
- 30:31come to your door and they say that that Jesus is the, the,
- 30:34it's just Michael the Archangel. No, he is the son of God.
- 30:44And the phrase that is used is wios to describe son, which is
- 30:51very, very important because we OS never is about origin.
- 31:03The word for that is Tecnon or briefos.
- 31:09Jesus is never called the little born one of God.
- 31:13He is the Son of God, the we OS of God.
- 31:18And we OS is defined as position, equality and the
- 31:23rightful heir of the Father. He is the Son of God.
- 31:34You will note that John's Gospel refers to God as Father 127
- 31:43times because Jesus refers to God as his Father.
- 31:52You will also note that there was never ever in the history of
- 31:55Judaism where a Jew ever referred to God as my Father.
- 32:03God was a father of Israel in terms of a nation.
- 32:11He was the Father of the nation, but no Jew up until the time of
- 32:17Jesus ever referred to his Father in heaven as my Father,
- 32:23because that would be blasphemous.
- 32:28But Jesus comes along, He talks about his Father, my Father in
- 32:36heaven, because he is the Son of God.
- 32:40He is equal in nature. He was equal in position as God.
- 32:47That's what we us means. He is the Son of God.
- 32:53So John is here to prove to us in various ways that Jesus is
- 33:02who he said he was. He is God in the flesh.
- 33:09So you move from the author to the background to to the
- 33:11characteristics and and what I want you to see about this is
- 33:14just one verse because it gives us John's motive, John's message
- 33:21and John's manner in which he gives us the message.
- 33:29Turn to John chapter 20, very familiar words, verse #30
- 33:38therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence
- 33:43of the disciples, which are not written in this book, but these
- 33:48have been written. So you may believe that Jesus is
- 33:53the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of God, and that believing you
- 34:01may have life in his name. The motive by which John writes
- 34:10is that you might believe. That word is used 92 times in
- 34:16John's gospel. He's writing that you may
- 34:21believe. Listen very carefully if you
- 34:23have a family member that does not believe.
- 34:26This is where your family member needs to be every Sunday
- 34:29morning. If you have a friend that
- 34:32doesn't believe this is where they need to be every Sunday
- 34:36morning. Bring them with you.
- 34:37If you have to drag them with you, drag them here.
- 34:41However you can get them here. Get them here.
- 34:44Because if you ever want them to believe who Jesus Christ is and
- 34:49be a follower of Christ, they need to hear what John has to
- 34:53say. Because the whole motive behind
- 34:57him writing is that you may believe that Jesus is the
- 35:01Messiah and the Messiah is the Son of God.
- 35:07So whatever you do, if you have a friend or family member that
- 35:10doesn't believe, get some handcuffs, put it around your
- 35:15wrist, put the other one around their wrist and bring them with
- 35:18you every Sunday morning. And then you can unlock that
- 35:21when they leave when it's over. But let them know, I want you to
- 35:25believe because John wrote, I want you to believe that Jesus
- 35:28is the Messiah. That's his whole motive for
- 35:31writing. He uses the word witness 47
- 35:37times. He used the word truth truth
- 35:48some 66 times. He used the word No 117 times
- 35:56because he wants you to know for certain who Jesus Christ is.
- 36:01There's a great emphasis in John about believing in the Lord
- 36:05Jesus Christ. Acts 1631.
- 36:09Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.
- 36:13Do you believe in Him? Do you know Him?
- 36:16Do you understand the witnesses that talk to us about Him?
- 36:23This is so important. I can't emphasize it enough that
- 36:27if you know someone who doesn't believe, do whatever you have to
- 36:32do to bring them with you, that they might believe that Jesus is
- 36:37the Christ, the Son of God. That's his motive.
- 36:47What's his message? That Jesus is God in the flesh.
- 36:53That's why he gives those eight IM statements a go a me direct
- 37:01translation of the four Hebrew consonants that make up the
- 37:06tetragonmaton in the book of Exodus that describe God fact.
- 37:12When you read the Gospel of John, let me suggest that you do
- 37:16this. You take your shoes off for an
- 37:21Exodus chapter 3. God said take your shoes off,
- 37:26Moses, you're standing on the holy ground.
- 37:29There is no more holier ground than the Gospel of John because
- 37:33every page is ablaze with the reality of the deity and glory
- 37:41of Christ. Fact, we should probably have
- 37:45some kind of place out in the foyer where you can take your
- 37:49shoes off when you walk in here. Because when you open up the
- 37:54Gospel of John, it's all about seeing Christ as the Son of God,
- 37:59the great I am. And that's why Jesus said or
- 38:03John says in John 8 quoting Jesus, unless you believe that I
- 38:06am, you will die in your sins. You must believe that Jesus is
- 38:12the God who spoke to Moses from the burning Bush in Exodus
- 38:16chapter 3. You must believe that if you do
- 38:22not believe that you have another Jesus.
- 38:25If you have another Jesus, you'll never be saved.
- 38:31You have to believe in the Jesus of the Bible because the Jesus
- 38:34of the Bible is the God of the Bible and the Jesus of the Bible
- 38:38is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
- 38:42I try to explain to my Jewish friends, they have another God.
- 38:48They don't have the true God. And they will say, well, I
- 38:51believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
- 38:55And I said, no, you don't, because if you did, you would
- 38:59believe in the great I am, that Jesus is the Messiah who is the
- 39:05true and living God. But you don't believe that the
- 39:10Jews serve another God. I'm sorry to say that, but
- 39:16that's the truth. And we must come to to grips
- 39:20with the reality of what the Bible says.
- 39:22Jesus is God. They do not believe that.
- 39:27They believe what the Muslims believe that Jesus is just
- 39:32another prophet. But that's the truth.
- 39:39Was he a prophet? Yes.
- 39:41Was he the prophet? Yes.
- 39:45But he's much more than a prophet.
- 39:48He's the son of the living God. And so you read the witnesses of
- 39:54a people like John the Baptist. Behold the Lamb of God, who
- 39:58takes away the sin of the world. Nathaniel Rabbi, you are the Son
- 40:04of God, the King of Israel. Peter, John 6.
- 40:13We believe and have come to know that you are the Holy One of
- 40:21God. Martha John 11 Yes, Lord, I have
- 40:28believed that you are the Christ, the Son of God, he who
- 40:34comes into the world. Thomas, my God, my Lord, my
- 40:46king, you have all these witnesses, You have the
- 40:50witnesses of the scripture, the witness of the Spirit, all
- 40:54saying the same thing. Behold your God.
- 41:03One book that fulfills Isaiah 35 verse #4 and the manner he tells
- 41:13you and John chapter 20. Many other signs did Jesus do.
- 41:22Interesting that he has seven signs. 7 Miracles.
- 41:28He chooses them very strategically, very
- 41:32specifically, to inform us about what took place at a very unique
- 41:37time in the life of Christ. To show you that all these signs
- 41:42prove without a shadow of a doubt that Jesus is God in the
- 41:47flesh, that the Messiah is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and
- 41:54Jacob. He wants to prove to you that
- 41:57Jesus is the Son of God. And so he's going to begin in
- 42:00chapter 1, verse #1 all the way through verse #18 giving us an
- 42:05introduction to the Son of God. And then in chapter 1, verse #19
- 42:13all the way to chapter 12, He's going to give us the public
- 42:17ministry of the Son of God. And then in chapter 13 through
- 42:22chapter 17, he's going to give us the private ministry of the
- 42:26Son of God. And then in chapter 1819 and 20,
- 42:34he's going to give us the passion ministry of the Son of
- 42:38God. And then chapter 21 will be the
- 42:41conclusion. So you have an introduction in
- 42:44chapter 1, a conclusion. In chapter 21 you have the
- 42:48public ministry, private ministry, and passion ministry
- 42:51of the Messiah. That's how the book of John is
- 42:55outlined. Very simple, yet very, very
- 43:00important for us to understand that Jesus is the Son of God.
- 43:06Last point is the and that is your decision.
- 43:12What decision have you made about the Christ?
- 43:18Who is Jesus in your mind? Better yet, who really, truly is
- 43:26Jesus? Do you see him as the Bible
- 43:32portrays him and proclaims Him? Do you see as you open up the
- 43:37perfect law of liberty, as Paul says in Secretary of History 18,
- 43:41we with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the
- 43:46Lord, we open up the gospel of John, and what do we see?
- 43:50We see the brilliant shining forth of the glory of God.
- 43:56And therefore when you read it, you're being changed from one
- 43:58level of glory to the next level of glory, even as by the Spirit
- 44:01of God. If you want to be transformed,
- 44:04if you want to be changed, behold the face of God.
- 44:10You see him clearly in John's gospel.
- 44:16So who is Jesus and what must I do to be saved?
- 44:24Boy, John will give that to you in great detail as he discusses
- 44:29his Christ counter with Nicodemus.
- 44:34But interesting when you come to the end in Christ is before
- 44:39Pilate, he brings out Jesus and he says behold the man at a
- 44:49place called the Echo Homo there in the city of Jerusalem, Behold
- 45:00the man, heaven been beaten beyond recognition.
- 45:03It's almost as a pilot saying, behold, he doesn't look like a
- 45:08man anymore, but he is a man. Because he's been beaten so
- 45:13severely and completely bloodied and marred and broken, he stands
- 45:21unrecognizable. Behold the man.
- 45:27And then a little later on he brings Christ out again.
- 45:30It says to Israel, Behold your king, your king.
- 45:38Your king is a man, but stand it all at your king.
- 45:46So Pilate would write the inscription that would be
- 45:51carried with Jesus and hung on the cross.
- 45:56Jesus of Nazareth, king of the Jews, and the Jewish leaders
- 46:07were upset. Say that that's what he said.
- 46:11And Pilate said I've written what I've written because he
- 46:14wrote the truth. Jesus of that despised village
- 46:20of Nazareth is your king. But yet Luke 19 says we will not
- 46:29have that king rule over us. I wonder if you made the
- 46:36decision for him to rule over you, that the Son of the living
- 46:42God, King in the flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld
- 46:51His glory. John says the glory as of the
- 46:55only begotten of the Father, full of grace and full of truth,
- 47:01because of the truth of the living God.
- 47:05He bestows grace upon those who are so undeserving.
- 47:09That's me. That's you.
- 47:13Have you made the decision to be a follower of Christ?
- 47:17Let me pray with you, our most gracious Heavenly Father.
- 47:23We are grateful for today, the brief moment that we could spend
- 47:29just introducing this marvelous gospel.
- 47:36What lies before us are so many unbelievable pages of the glory
- 47:45of Christ. So with anticipation, we we look
- 47:52to what you're going to reveal to us that we might truly
- 47:57believe. I pray for everyone in the room
- 48:02that Lord they would be a believer in the Lord Jesus
- 48:05Christ, that they would not leave without committing their
- 48:09life to the Messiah, the Son of the living God.
- 48:14And for those of us who know those that do not believe compel
- 48:22us to bring them with us. They might hear how the Word
- 48:30became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld the beauty and
- 48:36splendor and glory of the Son of God.
- 48:42We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ our King, Amen.
