Transcript
- 0:00Hello and welcome to the Retail podcast live from the Hive
- 0:03offices. I'm lucky enough to carve 15
- 0:06minutes with Sophie Weber, the CEO of all of the.
- 0:11President is my weird title global?
- 0:13President, OK, yeah, but across all of the brands, right.
- 0:16So shop talk, Bruce, you talk shop talk ball.
- 0:18It's it's January 2025. What's top of mind?
- 0:21What? What?
- 0:21What's keeping Sophie wake up right now?
- 0:23We have so much exciting stuff going on this year.
- 0:26We've come back kind of raring to go for for 2025.
- 0:29The thing that's top of my agenda is we have two new
- 0:32launches that we're working on this year and so as well with
- 0:36four existing shows. So you talked about those
- 0:37already. We have a new of shot talk
- 0:41spring this year called the new markets, which I'm very, very
- 0:43excited about. So that's new home for retail
- 0:47media as well as, you know, the sort of feature of the attention
- 0:50economy, we're calling it everywhere that customers
- 0:52discover new products and the new purchase journey.
- 0:57And then we have also very, very excitingly gone live just today
- 1:00with the announcement that in early 2026, January 2026, we're
- 1:04going to be launching Shop Talk Lux.
- 1:06Oh, wow, yeah, absolutely exciting.
- 1:08So that's a a brand new event that we're running in Abu Dhabi,
- 1:11which is for the luxury and the and the premium and retail
- 1:14community. So yeah, we're really, really
- 1:16excited to be kicking that off. We've been working behind the
- 1:19scenes on that for a little while, but it's lovely to have
- 1:21out in the world and then we'll talk about it publicly.
- 1:23So I mean that. I mean, that sounds like an
- 1:25whole episode in it, so. Oh yeah, we'll come back for
- 1:28that another day, yeah. Isn't lights in the venue and
- 1:30everything's been, is that like? Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:33Yeah. So we're running it at Emirates
- 1:35Palace. Oh my God, iconic Emirates
- 1:37Palace. And actually really excitingly,
- 1:39this is a very different sharp talk experience.
- 1:41So we're taking all the kind of best bits of sharp talk that
- 1:44people know and love. So the incredible content, you
- 1:47know, the real deep dive on the content front, the meet up
- 1:50experience, all of those, all of those great bits that people
- 1:53love about the shows, but we're kind of elevating the experience
- 1:56so well as elevating the conversation.
- 1:57So yeah, it'll be almost the whole event's going to be taking
- 2:01place outside. So we'll have meet up on the
- 2:03beach. We're going to have yeah, it's
- 2:04going to be brilliant. It'll be able to experience.
- 2:08Yeah, exactly it. Sounds emergency.
- 2:09On the agenda? Yeah, actually on the
- 2:11experience. I can imagine all the folks at
- 2:13Caring LVMH, all of these are about time that there's
- 2:16something for us, right? Believe it or not, we're only
- 2:19two months and away from your big Manson's show.
- 2:24Yeah, the big daddy of his show. What?
- 2:26I mean, what's in store this year?
- 2:28Oh, we put so, so much on the agenda.
- 2:30I actually am going to introduce you to Joe Laszlo, our Head of
- 2:33content, because he'll be able to delve into all of the trends
- 2:35that we're picking up on Shop Talk Spring this year.
- 2:37Thank you. For covering that some time and
- 2:39hopefully see you in a couple of.
- 2:40Months. I'll see you on in Vegas.
- 2:42So. I'm here sat with Joe Laszlo,
- 2:44head of content for Shop Talk in the US.
- 2:47Joe, I'd love to understand what is head of content What?
- 2:51What is behind what the the title.
- 2:54Yeah, well. Thanks for having me on Alex.
- 2:55It's a pleasure to be chatting with you today here in our our
- 2:58office shop talk is always, since we started in 2016, taking
- 3:02a very editorially driven approach to our agenda and
- 3:06speakers. So we start about nine months
- 3:09before one of our shows. We start with a blank sheet of
- 3:11paper or a blank whiteboard and start thinking about nine months
- 3:15from now, what is going to be on the minds of executives at
- 3:18retailers and consumer brands? What technologies will they be
- 3:20concerned about? What new industry trends will
- 3:23they be thinking about? How can we programme an agenda
- 3:26that will most serve their needs in that moment?
- 3:28It's, it's tricky if it takes talking a lot to smart people in
- 3:32the industry and, and reading a lot about what's going on.
- 3:35But, but once we have that framework of an agenda together,
- 3:38then we focus on who would be the best possible speakers.
- 3:42So it is a, a long and thoughtful process putting our
- 3:46agenda together, but and, and getting to be a, a subject
- 3:49matter expert at the same time. We, we create our own take on
- 3:52this moment in retail called the retail Zeitgeist that we deliver
- 3:55at at shop talks. So it's a, it's a combination of
- 3:58that, that logistical finding the right speaker for the right
- 4:01topic, putting together panels of people that you think are
- 4:03going to have a really great conversation and occasionally
- 4:06getting to lead the industry a little bit as well.
- 4:09As far as you know, kind of our our thoughts, our direction help
- 4:12shape what what is on the minds of senior executives at
- 4:16retailers and consumer graphs. Joe, I'm really fascinated about
- 4:19last year you made the announcement about the new
- 4:21market. Is it a different conference?
- 4:23Do I, does my ticket get me into the new market?
- 4:26What's it focused on if I don't know if you can expand on that
- 4:29for us? Absolutely, I'd love to.
- 4:30We're really excited about the new market at Shop Talk this
- 4:33year. First of all, New Market content
- 4:35is available to anybody who has a Shop Talk ticket.
- 4:38It's not a a separate show, although it is a show within a
- 4:42show in some major ways. You know, we live at this really
- 4:45interesting moment where I don't know, even six or seven years
- 4:49ago when Shop Talk started, consumer brands were consumer
- 4:53brands and retailers were retailers and agencies were
- 4:55agencies and media companies were media companies.
- 4:58And everybody sort of knew the role that they played in this
- 5:01ecosystem of how to get and keep customers attention and how to
- 5:04get products in in the hands of customers who wanted them.
- 5:07But now we live in a world where the retailers are all
- 5:10reinventing themselves as media companies.
- 5:12They're selling advertising to consumer brands.
- 5:14Consumer brands are creating TV shows to promote themselves to
- 5:17customers. So they're kind of getting into
- 5:18the media business too. Agencies and media companies are
- 5:22both becoming retailers because they're creating marketplaces to
- 5:24sell goods. So all of these roles are
- 5:27blurring together in a way that makes it hard to programme a
- 5:30show, but also makes it a really compelling, interesting moment
- 5:33for the industry. And, and that I think is really
- 5:35the motivation behind the New Market.
- 5:37The New Market is going to be a show within Shop Talk, a stage
- 5:40on its own right that's running all three days of the conference
- 5:43focused on the future of how companies can best get and keep
- 5:47their customers or their prospective customers attention.
- 5:50So be exploring the state-of-the-art of retail
- 5:52media. We'll be exploring other sorts
- 5:54of platforms and media and opportunities as well.
- 5:57And and just again, ways that brands are succeeding at cutting
- 6:01through the clutter and and finding their customers and
- 6:04really kind of create a those those compelling, either top of
- 6:08funnel emotional. I love this brand kind of
- 6:10moments or those compelling. I got to go buy this now moments
- 6:13or that blurry line in between the two.
- 6:15So I'm really excited about the new market.
- 6:18I think it is an interesting experiment of ours.
- 6:20We've always programmed a track on the future of marketing and
- 6:23advertising, but this just expands, makes it more senior,
- 6:27makes it more serious and and hopefully really serves the
- 6:29needs of our audience. That's fantastic.
- 6:32What do you think is the ideal profile of an attendee?
- 6:36Not an ideal, but who do you feel that resonates with the
- 6:38most? Shark Talk has always been
- 6:41designed to attract and serve the needs of a diverse set of
- 6:45retail skill sets, Expertise sections.
- 6:52I I think historically, because Shop Talk is a conference
- 6:55focused on retail and innovation and technology, I think it makes
- 7:00total sense to me why folks with digital or Omni channel or
- 7:04unified commerce titles find it really valuable.
- 7:07Executives with marketing or product type titles also find it
- 7:11valuable. But but I think beyond those, we
- 7:15also try to programme the conference for and deliver value
- 7:19to people from the operations and supply chain teams, people
- 7:23from the stores team, because, you know, we live in a world
- 7:25where, you know, everybody needs to have their area of expertise,
- 7:28where they go deep. But all those lines are so
- 7:31blurry these days that you kind of have to know a little bit
- 7:34about everything in order to be successful at a retailer or
- 7:36consumer brand. And so we try to give people
- 7:38opportunities to get a little outside their lane and learn
- 7:41from executives, from other parts of organisations, as well
- 7:43as go deep on what they know and what they need to do day-to-day.
- 7:46Alex, thank you so much for having me.
- 7:48It's a pleasure talking with you and look forward to seeing you
- 7:51on March 25th in Las Vegas.
