Transcript
- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. It is Monday.
- 0:16It is the 10th of June, which means we say Happy birthday,
- 0:19Your Majesty, although it's not actually the King's birthday.
- 0:22It is the figurative day that we all take a day off work and wish
- 0:28King Charles a happy birthday. But As for me, whore, it's
- 0:31chilly. Got myself a hot cup of tea in
- 0:33my hands. Life is good and you've joined
- 0:36me, so life is even better. Good to have your company
- 0:39because today, today we begin the last full week that we're
- 0:42going to spend reading through the book of Ecclesiastes.
- 0:45We will finish it off early next week and then dive back into the
- 0:50New Testament where we'll spend the next few months.
- 0:53But we will continue reading through this book where where
- 0:58it's actually quite wonderful because here we are thinking
- 1:01wisdom is all about knowing wise things.
- 1:04But in the end, the wise teacher that Koheleth says, you know
- 1:08what wisdom tells me that there is no such thing as the simple
- 1:14answers to life's difficult questions, that we just need to
- 1:17sit with those questions and be grateful for what we have and
- 1:20celebrate our life lived under a loving God.
- 1:23So that is what we shall do. We shall put away the big.
- 1:27No, actually, we're going to put away the big questions.
- 1:28We're going to grapple with the big questions and find ourselves
- 1:32in some very good company as we do that.
- 1:36So why don't you join me, friends?
- 1:37Let's put down the business of the day of the week, of
- 1:41whatever's going on, as we come before our God to hear His
- 1:45words. As captured in Ecclesiastes
- 1:49Chapter 7, A good reputation is more
- 2:02valuable than costly perfume, and the day you die is better
- 2:07than the day you were born. Better to spend your time at
- 2:11funerals than at parties. After all, everyone dies, so the
- 2:16living should take this to heart.
- 2:18Sorrow is better than laughter, for sadness has a refining
- 2:22influence on us. A wise person thinks a lot about
- 2:26death, while the fool thinks only about having a good time.
- 2:30Better to be criticised by a wise person than to be praised
- 2:34by a fool. A fool's laughter is quickly
- 2:37gone, like thorns crackling in a fire.
- 2:40This also is meaningless. Extortion turns wise people into
- 2:45fools, and bribes corrupt the heart.
- 2:49Finishing is better than starting.
- 2:51Patience is better than pride. Control your temper for anger
- 2:57labels you are full. Don't long for the good old
- 3:00days. This is not wise.
- 3:04Wisdom is even better when you have money.
- 3:06Both are a benefit as you go through life.
- 3:09Wisdom and money can get you almost anything, but only wisdom
- 3:15can save your life, except the way God does things.
- 3:19For who can straighten what He has made crooked?
- 3:22Enjoy prosperity while you can, but when hard times strike,
- 3:28realised that both come from God.
- 3:30Remember that nothing is certain in this life.
- 3:35I have seen everything in this meaningless life, including the
- 3:38death of good young people and the long life of wicked people.
- 3:43So don't be too good or too wise.
- 3:46Why destroy yourself? On the other hand, don't be too
- 3:50wicked either. Don't be a fool.
- 3:53Why die before your time? Pay attention to these
- 3:56instructions for anyone who fears God will avoid both
- 4:00extremes. One wise person is stronger than
- 4:0410 leading citizens of a town. Not a single person on earth is
- 4:09always good and never sins. Don't eavesdrop on others.
- 4:15You may hear your servant curse you, for you know how often you
- 4:18yourself have cursed others. I have always tried my best to
- 4:23let wisdom guide my thoughts and actions.
- 4:26I said to myself, I am determined to be wise.
- 4:30But it didn't work. Wisdom is always distant and
- 4:34difficult to find. I searched everywhere,
- 4:38determined to find wisdom and to understand the reason for
- 4:41things. I was determined to prove to
- 4:44myself that wickedness is stupid and that foolishness is madness.
- 4:51I discovered that a seductive woman is a trap more bitter than
- 4:55death. Her passion is a snare and her
- 4:58soft hands are chains. Those who are pleasing to God
- 5:03will escape her, but sinners will be caught in her snare.
- 5:08This is my conclusion, says the teacher.
- 5:12I discovered this after looking at the matter from every
- 5:15possible angle. Though I have searched
- 5:17repeatedly, I have not found what I was looking for.
- 5:22Only one out of 1000 men is virtuous, but not one woman.
- 5:28But I did find this God created people to be virtuous, but they
- 5:34have each turned to follow their own downward path.
- 5:49Lord, we are broken people. We are broken, sinful people who
- 5:54are surrounded by a sinful world that continues to pull us in
- 5:58directions other than yours. Each of us makes poor decisions
- 6:06each day, and no matter how virtuous other people seem,
- 6:10Lord, we know that every one of us, every one of us fails at
- 6:14being virtuous. I don't even think the author's
- 6:17estimation of one in 1000 of us are virtuous.
- 6:22So, Lord Jesus, we need you to transform our hearts, to soften
- 6:27our hearts, to shape them, to enlarge them, and for your
- 6:33Spirit to slowly transform us from the inside out.
- 6:39That's the fruits of your Spirit, Lord, love, joy, peace,
- 6:45patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self
- 6:52control. These are your ways.
- 6:56Shape us, refine us, so that we can be more like you, our
- 7:02wonderful, surprising, kind, gracious and gentle God.
- 7:09And thank you that even when we get this wrong day in and day
- 7:12out, You patiently stand by us, arm around us, heart open to us.
- 7:22And so we just declare that you are Lord and that we love you,
- 7:27and we pray all these things in your name, Jesus, Amen.
