- 2:24Well, it's not every day that we talk about now who my kid?
- 2:28And it is every day were talking about food on the show. But I
- 2:30always get a mention in there. But I got my good friend Sandy call
- 2:34from a Bridge Road bistro with us right now. Sandy, good morning,
- 2:36how are you. Good morning to you. Thank you so much for having
- 2:38me here today, Thank you for being here, and thank you for providing
- 2:40breakfast for us. I mean you showed up and I got word that you
- 2:46were going to provide breakfast. But man, and you learned a valuable lesson
- 2:50today in the world of radio. If you want to make instant friends show
- 2:54up with biscuits, yes, because it worked because I saw people coming down
- 2:59these apps that I haven't seen since the Carter administration. They just came like,
- 3:02we're, you know, running down here. It's like, who's that
- 3:06guy? You didn't even work here, but but you showed up with some
- 3:08with some pretty pretty delicious food for today. I appreciate you being here.
- 3:14So before I get into some things you want to talk about, I want
- 3:15to And by the way, she didn't just bribe me to come on the
- 3:17show with food. Just so you know, give us the history behind Bridge
- 3:22Road. Be sure, I mean, tell us, yeah, of course,
- 3:24tell us it's one of Charleston's premier eaters. But tell us about how
- 3:27did how'd it coming to being? Well? Thank you so much? U
- 3:30Well, just kind of a quick story. Robert Wong came here from San
- 3:35Francisco, California. He was the youngest chef ever at the Greenbrier Resort,
- 3:39and he opened this restaurant in two thousand and four with his lovely wife,
- 3:43Sherry Wong, and they've been we've been open for nineteen years. I bought
- 3:46the place about five years ago from Sherry yourself, and we've been thriving and
- 3:52doing everything we can on the hill to keep things moving. But nineteen years
- 3:55of solid history of elevated dining farm to a table bilch of food and then,
- 4:01unfortunately, after Robert passed away in twenty twelve, we brought on the
- 4:05TC Energy location. That's where I brought you breakfast this morning, these fabulous
- 4:10biscuits. So we have a breakfast and lunch service every Monday, Tuesday,
- 4:14and Friday. We do deliveries for breakfast and lunch. So we've done a
- 4:16lot of great things in the last nineteen years. Now, talk about exactly
- 4:20where you are located. You're on Bridge Road, but where exactly nine five
- 4:25Bridge Road. We're right across from the fire department. You can't miss us.
- 4:28We're right at the top of the hill Bridge Road, b stro right
- 4:30the logo right there on. All right, and let's talk about this Energy
- 4:33breakfast that you delivered to us this morning. Is this a newer thing that
- 4:36you've been doing. Actually, it's TC Energy. They've been around. It's
- 4:41the old Columbia Gas. Okay, at the Columbia Gas folks, they've changed
- 4:45names a few times, from Columbia Gas to Nysores to TC Energy. We
- 4:48run that cafeteria on the main level there, so anyone can come in have
- 4:53breakfast and lunch with us any day they want, and enjoy a beautiful view
- 4:58of the Canal River and the state capit So anybody can come in. Anybody
- 5:00can come in, Okay, not just root for employees. Anybody can come
- 5:03in and just check in at the front and come in and see us and
- 5:05support us. It's just another way we can reach out to the community and
- 5:09surf point. And what kind of different things do you offer there? Oh
- 5:12my goodness, the list is endless. You can make your own omelet.
- 5:15You can have biscuits and gravy. These wonderful biscuits I brought in this morning,
- 5:20sausage, bacon and cheese, egg biscuits, yogurt. We have a
- 5:26fabulous, fabulous salad and soup bar, probably the best in a Trystate area
- 5:30since steak and all. I believe. It's super fresh. Everything's super fresh.
- 5:33Every day we set up. You can come in. We have features
- 5:35of the day. It's just a really great deal. We've been there for
- 5:39ten years. Okay, A lot of people may not even know that.
- 5:42I know, I know, I'm no, I'm super where's that location exactly?
- 5:46It is seventeen hundred mccrawcl Avenue southeast right across basically across the room from
- 5:50the YWC. Okay, yeah, exactly where it is. All right.
- 5:54Now, let's talk about some things going on at the be Strow, including
- 5:56your private rooms. You have private rooms available. Indeed, I'll tell you
- 6:00what the pandemic kind of changed some things. How people get married and things
- 6:04like that. We've got a lot of elopements that come through now, baby
- 6:08showers, bridal showers, reunions. It's just a great room. We have
- 6:12two rooms actually one seats up to fifty one seats up to twenty. Come
- 6:15in and celebrate anything you want, birthdays to reunions to even pharmaceutical companies come
- 6:20in and do presentation, private launches and that kind of thing. And you're
- 6:25getting into the way I actually have done it for a while, of the
- 6:28entertainment thing and you get some quality entertainment. You actually brought me a list
- 6:30of people that you've got going on now. Of course, the big story
- 6:33around here, actually there's two because I'm a Marshall Gas so I gotta I
- 6:38gotta hit up Marshal in Virginia Tech. But a lot of people obviously interested
- 6:41in mountaineers and Texas Tech on the twenty third, which just happens to be
- 6:46my birthday, by the way. Understow that in there. So you're doing
- 6:49a half price wine of beer and apps the West Virginia any any game day
- 6:54on a Saturday, and I know there's one on Thursday coming up as well,
- 6:58but we're doing half off appetizers and half off glasses of wine and beer
- 7:01draft beer. That's a great gig. Come in and tailgate with us,
- 7:04Come in and enjoy the game. If you don't want to drive over to
- 7:06w or Huntington's right and Uber eats as well. We've got that all right.
- 7:11And I kind of interrupted myself here because I wanted to talk about this
- 7:15music. I look at some of the people that you've got lined up to
- 7:16come there. You get John Bird coming, Gary Hayes, a guy that
- 7:20I know very well, Lee Dean, Oh yes, Lee and I go
- 7:24way way way back. He does a swinging with Sinatra thing. It's absolutely
- 7:27fantastic. So you've got a lot of different music coming in. There's some
- 7:30people. Now give us the how that works as far as I mean,
- 7:34are they right there like where where you'd be dining. You're going to enjoy
- 7:38the music is a separate room. How does that work physically? Well?
- 7:41The great thing for those folks that haven't seen us in a couple of years,
- 7:44or have been out of state or what have you. We have a
- 7:46beautiful loungerie that I have placed in a beautiful stage, so our guests can
- 7:50get right on stage, hook up to our equipment and start playing. I've
- 7:55got surround sound all through the restaurant. It's easy peasy. My little Gary
- 7:59Hayes is of the world. And John Bird, they can just plug in
- 8:01and start playing on their stage. It's right there in front of the dining
- 8:05room and the big bay window, so they overlook the whole dining room.
- 8:07The acoustics is fantastic. It's not too loud, not too low. Everyone
- 8:11hears what's going on. I love, love, love supporting our local musicians.
- 8:16I think we need to support these folks as much as we can.
- 8:18Agree hole, and there's a lot of talent here in the Canal Valleys unt.
- 8:22I mean, we're talking about Mike Pushkin. You know, I'm bringing
- 8:26him out of retirement and bringing him and you know every now and again,
- 8:28and John Bird, we're super excited about having him. I don't know the
- 8:31last time I've heard him, you know. But we're longtime friends and I'm
- 8:35super excited that everyone has open arms. They come in and support local live
- 8:39entertainment. It's free, there's never a cover, you know. It's just
- 8:41a really nice ambiance. And you are as I love the way you phrase
- 8:46this. You're fido friendly. Yes, Yes, you can bring your fur
- 8:50babies in. We had a little guest Saturday night. It was a little
- 8:54English bulldog. His name was Una, and actually it was as she.
- 8:58She came in and had dinner. She They're just they're amazing pets. They
- 9:01can sit under the table, they can sit at the table, as long
- 9:03as they're well, well, remannered, behaved. Bring in your baby babies
- 9:09and we're fine. Yes, and we have a five years patio two if
- 9:11you want to sit outside with your pet and even children, we have a
- 9:13fenced in area so you can let your two, three, four, five
- 9:16year old run crazy on the patio and just enjoy our cuisine and our atmosphere.
- 9:20We've done some great things in the last five years. I did a
- 9:24big renovation when I bought the place from Sherry in twenty eighteen, so we've
- 9:28got some great things going on at the Bridge Road b stro And you're doing
- 9:30Prime Rib on Monday. To the Prime Ribs one of my favorite things in
- 9:33the world. Oh my goodness, it's so tasty. Chef Joshua he roasts
- 9:37that all day long and it's so so amazing. If you love Prime rib,
- 9:41you're gonna you need to come and see us on Mondays and Tuesdays.
- 9:43We've got some great Prime Rib. Now, what is this Thursday weekend Warriors
- 9:46thing? That is a great, great question. That is from Nicky Atkins.
- 9:52Nicky Atkins got together with a few musicians, Daniel Farrell and Travis McGee.
- 9:58They come in every Thursday perform great live entertainment. If you love Landy
- 10:01Wilson, if you like the Morgan Wallins, if you like eighties music,
- 10:05nineties music. They play all genres. So it's every Thursday. They start
- 10:09around six thirty. It's an amazing group that's up and coming. They've been
- 10:13playing a lot of events and things. But I like to popularize our bands
- 10:18at the bistro. I really really love doing that. I love supporting live
- 10:24music and come and see us and support live music with us, you know,
- 10:26And we're talking about Sandy call for bridge read beast. I'm gonna put
- 10:30you on the spot here, Sandy. Yeah, what's your favorite thing on
- 10:31the menu. Well, it's coming back this autumn. Meatloaf melow. Yes,
- 10:35I'm a huge little country girl. I grew up in Saint Auban's up
- 10:39up a little, a little hollow and hollow. Yeah, copy fancy say
- 10:45holler holler. Okay, I'm a hollow girl. Okay. But mashed potatoes
- 10:48with the meat loaf and green beans. So we're bringing that back for our
- 10:50autumn menu in a few weeks. That's probably by far my favorite. And
- 10:54we have a great selection of steaks, rib as, swordfish, great appetizers,
- 10:58salads. We're gluten free, vegetation. The vegetation that we get in
- 11:03from local farmers is huge for our vegetarians and our vegan friendly folks. Okay,
- 11:09so we do it all. I try to really cover every every aspect
- 11:11of a restaurant that I can. I I'm very groomed and the restaurant business.
- 11:16This is my probably my thirty six year being in the restaurant business.
- 11:18I started out years ago. I don't know if you remember River's Edge in
- 11:22Saint All. Yeah, that's my roots with the Faint Frame family. They
- 11:26taught me everything I know, and then I moved on to Outback Steakhouse and
- 11:28was with them for about ten years and opened up one hundred and fifteen across
- 11:31the United States. Really, so I did a lot of things in the
- 11:35corporate world, and I love doing what I'm doing, and I love people
- 11:37coming in and I love serving them and sharing memories with them. So everyone
- 11:43comes see the bridge road be stress before we close, I want to throw
- 11:46the study. I know a lot of restaurants and establishments, not only here
- 11:48in the valley but throughout had had trouble, you know, kind of coming
- 11:52out of COVID, and COVID was was devastating a lot of businesses, you
- 11:56know, just didn't A lot of restaurant into eateries didn't survive. You were
- 12:00one of the ones that did. How how are you doing now? And
- 12:03how are you doing for employees right now? Because a lot of folks are
- 12:05struggling to try to find people to work. Well, I'm in that both
- 12:09with them. They're not alone, They're not alone, and it's a it's
- 12:13a hindrance. I read an article there the morning, how we've lost fifty
- 12:18four hundred people in our county in one year, and that doesn't help,
- 12:20you know, the employee pool, it doesn't help the guest pool. I'll
- 12:24be honest with you. It's it's kind of like riding a roller coaster at
- 12:28nighttime. You just don't know what's coming at you, you know, and
- 12:31I kind of just try to hold on and hope for a better day the
- 12:35next day. And I'll be honest, you know, there'll be nights where
- 12:37our dining room is pretty much empty and we may have a private room or
- 12:41maybe a catering or a delivery or nothing. But you know, I just
- 12:46try to pray for the next day, for a better day, and hope
- 12:48that folks come in and support us. And there might be you know,
- 12:52an elopement coming or a wedding. We do a lot of memorial services as
- 12:56well, you know, I mean need a place to gather, yes,
- 13:00like retirement parties or as you said, you know, wedding showers or elopements
- 13:03or it's it's it's really hard why elopements has become such a big deal now,
- 13:07I think you said that's top of the show. I was like,
- 13:11why are elopements such a good thing? Well, yeah, you know,
- 13:15weddings are expensive nowadays. You gotta get the venue and the logistics and and
- 13:20all the things. You know. And with my place, my I'm newly
- 13:24wedded. My husband, he can perform ceremonies. I've got a girlfriend that
- 13:28can perform the ceremonies. I'm all inclusive. They can get their food,
- 13:31they can get married, there have their little fun dance with the entertainment.
- 13:35It's all right, definitely. Yeah. Where can people learn more about you?
- 13:39Let's go to the Bridge Road b Show dot com. Okay, and
- 13:43you can visit our Facebook or Instagram or TikTok or Google. You got it
- 13:48all. I try to. I try to keep everything covered. I'm kind
- 13:50of like a little corporation in a little and a little Sandy call mind.
- 13:56Well, Sandy, was a pleasure getting to know you and having you on
- 13:58the show today. Thank you for the delicious food. There's probably a fight's
- 14:03broken out in there right now in the conference. Are we let the feet
- 14:05from well? Okay, all right, so some of the ones that didn't
- 14:09get any you're gonna gonna take care of with just the yogurt. Thanks so

- 17:34morning, How are you, Good morning day. Thanks for asking me to
- 17:37come on, Thank you for being here on the show. Now, you
- 17:41had several things on your mind this morning that you wanted to talk about.
- 17:44And I was not at the Charleston City Council meeting the other night, but
- 17:48there's a question about about overtime, some concerns that you and maybe some other
- 17:52people have about overtime as it pertains to Charleston police officers. Would you like
- 17:56to expound upon that? Sure, sure, I was one of the ones,
- 18:03along with Beth, current councilwoman from Board seven. Sure's some of your
- 18:07listeners saw the article of the News investigative reports that mister Kenny Bath did and
- 18:18that came about. Coincidentally, that came about because some retired officers and current
- 18:25officers I feel like probably had just had enough and they reached out my understanding,
- 18:30to mister Bath, and that's where some of this overtime. I think
- 18:36it's been kind of years into making. However, the last three years I
- 18:41think it's been excessive. So it was actual officers that have spoken out about
- 18:48it. The way that it, you know, this exorbitant overtime that no
- 18:53one's gonna buy, and also the way probably it's been approved of them,
- 19:00the sects of amounts. There's no real policy. So that's how it came
- 19:03about with this story with mister Bass. So that was a couple of weeks
- 19:07ago. So as a member of city council, you know, I take
- 19:11my job pretty seriously and I seem to be one of the few that always
- 19:15talk about fiscal responsibility, and when you're spending other people's money, I think
- 19:22for no one in the room to ask about this, three million, three
- 19:27million dollars in three million dollars in overtime just in twenty twenty three, justfteen
- 19:37million dollars spent in overtime just with CPD in seven years. That's exorbitant.
- 19:44And for the mayor to only her only comment was a written comment to say,
- 19:48I make no apologies. Crime rates down and this is how we do
- 19:52it. Well, anybody in law enforcement understands. If you look at the
- 19:57top over time getters, this is top brass. These aren't the patrols.
- 20:03These aren't the boots on the right. I called boots on the ground,
- 20:07you know, and you can First of all, the crime rate is not
- 20:11down, if if if it is, it's back to normal. We actually
- 20:17when she took office, it actually increased during COVID. So if it is
- 20:22down, it's back to normal. But in the solved rate she spoke about,
- 20:27we had no we had zero unsolved murder cases, and now that's not
- 20:33true. And just for the listeners to understand all the all the crime statistics
- 20:40reported by CPD is self reported. So I'm gonna say about the crime reports,
- 20:47so you can report as much or as little as you want to and
- 20:52probably extrapolate it to however you want it to read. But to use that
- 20:56as an overtime excuse, it's just to me, just a deflection. This
- 21:00is something about public funding. You, the listeners, I hope saw that
- 21:04story. If not, you can go back and read it. I think
- 21:07mister Bassett a really good job, and I went back and asked for some
- 21:11of the four yet information that he got because I like to do my homework.
- 21:15If I'm going to speak out, I want to make sure that I'm
- 21:18accurate. And you know, I've been probably the most supportive of CPD and
- 21:23since my twelve years on council, I asked for three raises, and I'm
- 21:29always the one asking for a new facility form and so I'm kind of their
- 21:33good cheerleader. And so one of the reasons I spoke out is, first
- 21:38of all, I feel like to our taxpayers, this is tax dollar money
- 21:41again. This is another scandal at city Hall about taxpayer money, and no
- 21:48one can explain this away. Let me ask you this, and pardon me
- 21:52for being ignorant about this. And you can correct me if I'm wrong.
- 21:55No, No, I just you don't know what you don't know. But
- 21:57does not counsel woman's not aggress is not city council approved the overtime funding?
- 22:03I mean, does this not mean isn't this approved by city council? Well
- 22:07and good, good point. So I think it starts with the mayor.
- 22:12It's her budget. She budgeted. I think it was over two point two
- 22:17million in overtime. Maybe I have not voted for one of the budgets since
- 22:21her administration. First of all, I wanted to raise for our police officers,
- 22:26and I felt like the overtime money should have been used to, you
- 22:30know, give these officers a raise that's competitive with the sheriff's department, so
- 22:36we quit losing. Let me, let me tell you something. We have
- 22:38not been properly staffed since the end of the Jones administration. We have not
- 22:45been fully staffed. That's our biggest problem. But that these top overtime getters
- 22:51are our top brass. Then these times the guy's boots on the ground,
- 22:55and let's talk about that. There's one individual and kind of and I like
- 23:00some of these guys, but you know, i'd be a hypocrite. If
- 23:03I don't, I can't speak out on one thing and not on the other.
- 23:07And this is just public funday, and you can't get anybody to swallow
- 23:11this. When when some of these top three guys, you know, we're
- 23:15turning in and upwards of you know, they work eight to four. I
- 23:21saw the time sheet. They clock in four to eight overtime and then eight
- 23:23to twelve every single day, three hundred and sixty five days a year.
- 23:27One guy in the top three make anywhere from sixty to sixty five thousand,
- 23:33and do I ever think it's enough? No, I'm the one that keeps
- 23:36asking for more money. For these guys, however, and they're over time
- 23:41though, it exceeds their annual salary by two times. So if you work,
- 23:48if you do pay roll, I had my own company. If you
- 23:49do payroll, a full time employee make earn two thousand and eighty hours.
- 23:56Some of these guys turned in twenty five hundred hours of overtime, so another
- 24:02full time, so their their overtime pay was double their regular salary. So
- 24:08you're looking at instead of making sixty two to sixty five, they're now making
- 24:11one hundred and seventy five a year, and hey, I don't want their
- 24:15job. I wouldn't do their job. However, way it's reads. And
- 24:21here's here's how it came about too. It's called tell Ustaff or tuf I
- 24:25keep slaying tell them in. But it's not that round tell us staff.
- 24:30Any of the guys can log on and see who's turning in overtime. So
- 24:33it's pretty transparent for the other officers to see. And there was a lot
- 24:38of hoop law under Chief's Hunt to don't look at Tellustaff. It's none of
- 24:44your business, it's approved, it's all good. Leave it alone. Well,
- 24:49as we know, Chief Hunts no longer there as chief. And what
- 24:55was occurring was you just clock in four to eight, eight to twelve,
- 24:59and and you had either Assistant Deputy John Garden, who was one of the
- 25:04top overtime getters, would sign off or Chief Hunts or Richie Basford, and
- 25:10a couple of those guys signed off on each other. I mean it just
- 25:14so, I asked, of course, what's the policy? I asked the
- 25:18new interim Chief Dempsey, who, by the way, for three weeks,
- 25:22and what all he's been handed. I think he's done a great job.
- 25:25I think he's well respected by the force. And I don't know why we
- 25:27haven't named a police chief either. It's been almost a month where the only
- 25:32city was out of police chief. Where the biggest city don't have a police
- 25:34chief. They got an interim. But I asked Dempsey, Chief Dempsey,
- 25:38I said, Sir, I said, what's the policy. Do we have
- 25:41a policy on you know, what you can build for overtime? Because these
- 25:45kinds are detectives and bureau chiefs, So let's follow that if they're called out
- 25:49the crimes already being committed. So so my back to my crime's lower comments.
- 25:56But but so I was told by one of the guys that were one
- 26:00of the top overtime getters, said, look, if I got a call,
- 26:03it lasted twenty minutes. I turned in four hours. I said,
- 26:07how do you defend that. You can't do that for policy? So I
- 26:14asked Chief Pimp or Chief Pimp, Yes, says there a policy. No,
- 26:15ma'am, it's just kind of understood. But no, that wouldn't And
- 26:19I know for a fact, you know, you know, I think is
- 26:23it sisty Deputy chief. I know he didn't sign off on a lot of
- 26:27the overtime, so and I know he's making some changes moving forward, but
- 26:33you can ignore fifteen million dollars in overtime sit on city council and let that
- 26:40go by and just rubber stamp everything else. I personally cannot do that.
- 26:45Let me ask him. Always been very vocal about the fiscal responsibility of public
- 26:49funding, and Kensewilman Shanna Sadergrass is with us here on five eighty Live.
- 26:52Let me let me ask you this question, Councilman. As it pertains,
- 26:56you mentioned that the police Department of Charleston has been funded or I'm starting not
- 27:00underfunded, understaffed since since the Jones administration. Uh. And that may and
- 27:07that may be true, But I think that all of our police departments in
- 27:10the area. I mean, I've had the sheriff on here. I've talked
- 27:12to the mayors on every Monday, I do a segment called Mayor Monday with
- 27:15a different mayor, and they're all basically begging for police officers. So,
- 27:19I mean, I don't know, but that's that different. Go ahead,
- 27:22Well, well, they struggle, but but like I stay in touch with
- 27:26the Sheriff's department because that's our biggest competitor. If our guys leave, they
- 27:29usually go the shaff departments. Some have left to state police because of the
- 27:33pay and you know, the big deal with the Sheriff's apartment. They get
- 27:36a take home car, their benefits, their pension plan is better, and
- 27:40I want to go back and talk about that too, what that's doing to
- 27:41our overall public funding with pension plans. But we've been fifteen to twenty three
- 27:49officers short. That's a lot. When you talk to South Charleston talked to
- 27:53Chief ron Hart, which I have, and some of the other ones,
- 27:56and those are smaller cities, but they might be down one or two,
- 28:00but they're knocked down. And in the Sheriff's department, they filled theirs as
- 28:03quick as they're open. So and I think the two, because they're a
- 28:08little more competitive, they actually take less calls than the CPD. You know,
- 28:15we're the biggest city, so we do get a lot of calls.
- 28:18These guys worked extremely hard. And again I'm not against the overtime. You
- 28:22know, if it's if that's what it is, and maybe it all is
- 28:26all. I ask again, we have studdle on Sonickers internal auditors. Why
- 28:32would you not ask are do a forensic God it if all these officers are
- 28:37saying, hey, this isn't right, and anybody in the right mind knows
- 28:42that you cannot work that much overtime in a full year without holiday vacation.
- 28:51And I think some of those guys got on people's facebooks. They were out
- 28:53of town and they were still building for overtime, and so why not look
- 28:59at that. If I'd have been the right and said, hey, hey,
- 29:00we're going to make sure this is legitis. I'm bringing in Subtle and
- 29:03Sonacker, or aren't they already? I mean, I was under the impression
- 29:07a councilman, Sunggress, I was on the impression that there was already an
- 29:10audit being done by the firm that you mentioned. Well, they do an
- 29:15annual audit. They did one in and gave us a report in March,
- 29:18which I brought up on council because it wasn't It was sent out to council
- 29:23kind of under cover. You know, just here, this is our subtle
- 29:26on Sonicer report. And one of the biggest things they talked about they didn't
- 29:30get into CPD over time that they talked about a lot of the cities every
- 29:36time was not authorized. There was no policy. And it's coincidentally, just
- 29:40by the way, CPD came up with a new policy the day that Kenny
- 29:45bast and any Foia, so KTD does have now a kind of a broad
- 29:51brush over time policy. And Chief Dempsey told me that he's going to change
- 29:56things moving forward that he knows for askew and and I applaud that man.
- 30:03You know, he's he's got a tough I mean, he's got all these
- 30:06investigations with Chief Hunt, you know there's four now, he's got this overtime
- 30:11scandal. And all I'm saying is a is a representative of taxpayers, I
- 30:17would be remiss. And I don't know how the public at large does not
- 30:21reach out to their council members and going are you asleep? Why is no
- 30:26one asking about this? Anybody that gets a paycheck understand? And you know,
- 30:32and obviously I brought it up. I thought the mayor would join me
- 30:34and saying, hey, let's let's look into this and if everything's good,
- 30:38if not, we'll work it out. But if a lot of people know
- 30:42and understand it was state employees, governmental employees, your last three years factors
- 30:48into your pension. So most of these people on that top getting list of
- 30:52overtime. You know, it's really inflating their pension because it doesn't only the
- 31:00account for their annual salaries, it also counts for all the overtime pays,
- 31:03so you could substantially increase your retirement benefit. It's because they take I don't
- 31:10know if it's three or five years, but it's the last several years.
- 31:12So if you look at the ones getting it, these are the guys that
- 31:15are at seventeen years you know, I'm going to say fifteen years and now,
- 31:19so they're really inflating their pension. And we've already got a pension problem.
- 31:25We've got an unfunded for uniform officers unfunded liability problem of over three hundred
- 31:32million dollars. And then our o PADLINS, which is other other public employees
- 31:37pensions, it's underfunded or unfunded by another three hundred and some millions. So
- 31:42we're looking at seven hundred and fifty million unfunded pension plans. And look what
- 31:48we've exploded into this and if you look at it over a seven year curve,
- 31:52you know you and if you look at this from an individual basis,
- 31:57I mean quite frankly, no one's going to buy that you can't. It's
- 32:01physically impossible, council. So well, before we let you go, because
- 32:06we're gonna have to start to wrap it up here I do. I'm gonna
- 32:07give you like a minute or so. What would you like to see happen
- 32:12in this situation? I mean, you've you've made a lot of I don't
- 32:15want see alligat, but I mean you've gone on the record, not just
- 32:16on this show. You you said, what what is it that you would
- 32:20like to see going forward? And what is your relationship with uh with the
- 32:23mayor, like, have you actually tried to talk to her, you know,
- 32:25one on one because it seems to be there's a definitely a rift I
- 32:30think between the two of you. What would you like to see? Give
- 32:34give me sixty seconds and go ahead. I'll be honest. Yeah, I
- 32:36mean, I'm a Democrat of the same party. I don't think that mayor
- 32:40good one particularly cares for me bringing up I think public business on council floor,
- 32:47you know. And I'm sorry, I'm gonna ask about your temporary workers
- 32:52that you've worked for three hundred and sixty five days and never took a day
- 32:54off. With Jane Balstick that went on for four years so she could get
- 32:59a say, retirement. I'm not going to ignore that. And if she
- 33:02doesn't like that, I'm doing my job. I'm asking her to do hers.
- 33:08I'm never disrespectful. I have no you know, issues with the mayor
- 33:16other than I expect you to do your job. I want you to be
- 33:20physically responsible. I think she's set on the type hunt investigation for a year
- 33:24and swept it under the rug. I'll be very public about that. There's
- 33:28no reason why that was not made public. All of this could have been
- 33:31done these other women. There's still more to come in that case. So
- 33:37you know, my issue is a transparent like you say, you are dealing
- 33:42with public funds. We've We've done this with temporary agencies. We've done this
- 33:46with paying for private individuals, generals with public funds. It's back to the
- 33:52overtime with public funds. Hey get it in getting audit. If it's fine,
- 33:58I'm good with it. If everybody's talking about it, why wouldn't you
- 34:01put it to bed? And if not, I'm asking J. D.
- 34:05Mccusky, our state auditor, to do it. All right? Why not?
- 34:08All right? We got to go The council woman sung Grass. I
- 34:12appreciate you taking time under schedule to be here. We will talk again soon.

- 37:12have one. You can go to city council and you can ask to speak,
- 37:15but as far as having representation on council, you do not. Texas.
- 37:17I apologize for the length of the text, but I feel it's important
- 37:21as a council member who's served under Mayor Goldman and Jones. A discussion of
- 37:24the unfunded police pension fund has been discussed for years. Mayor Jones has frequently
- 37:29stated his biggest accomplishment was the creation of a new pension system for new hires.
- 37:34What has the uncontrolled ot done of the old system? And as the
- 37:37city recently done, the worst case if everyone retired at once a study to
- 37:43know at what percent of the system will be funded, only one needs to
- 37:45look fifty miles west to see what can happen to a bad system. Because
- 37:50Huntington spends twenty five percent of their budget on pension payments, according to a

- 38:05all the overtime or of the Jones administration? She was there but didn't say
- 38:08anything. According to a text her Texas, Dear Dave, one thing I've
- 38:12learned from your show unless you are Unless you are squeaky clean and have all
- 38:16aspects of your life in order. Never took off. Shannon Snodgrass, she
- 38:20doesn't sleep. We need to it. Text all right, final texts here
- 38:23Texas. It would be nice for a local newspaper would report weekly police blotter
- 38:28items so the public could better understand what the CPD is actually doing each day.
- 38:31And Kenny Bass doesn't have to come in with a dirty water mop.
- 38:35Also not sure what up bloated city council is doing. If all this overtime
- 38:38mess has been going on for years, it's okay to complain, but not
- 38:40if you've been on council for years and have done nothing. Let me bring
- 38:45in our newest member of the House of Delegates from the District fifty seven,
- 38:49Hollis Lewis. He, of course, chosen by the governor, took over
- 38:51the spot left vacant would Delegate Doug Stafferd Zion Hollis, Good morning, How
- 38:54are you, sir? I'm doing well. How are you doing this morning?
- 38:55Should I call you Delegate Lewis? Yeah? When is it official?
- 38:59When do you get sworn in? I'm figuring that out so we'll know in
- 39:00the next couple of days, so then we can call you that. But
- 39:05but we congratulations. By the way, thank you. I appreciate that,
- 39:07all right, And now talk about the honor of being chosen. It's a
- 39:09big honor, you know. It's one of those things where you know,
- 39:13you put your name down, you hope you might get it, and when
- 39:15you get it, it's just it's a good feeling to, you know,
- 39:19represent communities that I've worked in and and and been in for a while.
- 39:22So it's it's it's it's a great honor. Give us the background on Holles
- 39:25Lewis. All right, Hollos Lewis. I'm from Charleston, West Virginia.
- 39:28I attended George Washington High School. I went to West Virginia State University.
- 39:32I played a football there and I was a criminal justice major. And from
- 39:37there I went to law school at Southern University. It's in Baton Rouge,
- 39:39Louisiana, and I returned home. And upon returning home, and I've worked
- 39:45for the federal government. I've i was a Canall County Magistrate judge and uh
- 39:49West Virginia Parole Board member. And I've also been an adjunct professor at West
- 39:52Virginia State. And I've you know, done a bunch of stuff in the
- 39:55community. So I'm thoroughly involved in all things in the community around And I've
- 40:00also was a volunteer football coach for about eight years here. And were you
- 40:02with the Charleston are your lines at one point or at one point? Yeah,
- 40:05but but you're not going out with it you currently? Okay, what
- 40:08do you see is the biggest challenge and what are some of the things you'd
- 40:12like to work on once you actually get to work. Obviously, the biggest
- 40:15challenge is being a Democrat that you know, a super majority state with Republicans.
- 40:22But I think that as far as that is concerned, we just have
- 40:25to, you know, state our position and do what we can do to
- 40:28advance not only genders that we set for, but represent the people and the
- 40:32best interests of the people. As far as things I would like to work
- 40:36on, obviously I've been talking about sports here with Kaul Lee for for a
- 40:38while, but some criminal justice issue things I would like to see about.
- 40:43That's kind of what I've been working in previously. Speaking of as you did,
- 40:47you mentioned being a Democrat in West Virginia. Uh, you know,
- 40:51and for years it was the opposite. It was, it was the opposite.
- 40:53I'm from southern West Virginia, but I know all about it. You
- 40:58know, the Republicans had the super duper major already in the legislature. Now
- 41:00you're one of the few Democrats could be serving there. What kind of what
- 41:05kind of challenges at Hollis. It's a big challenge because you know, things
- 41:07that we that we deem important, things that we might want to push forward,
- 41:12could get squashed just because you know that don't represent the interests of Republicans.
- 41:16However, I think that I want to come up with the attitude.
- 41:19I want to, you know, voice our agenda, voice our perspective,
- 41:22but also we have to be workable and try to you know, build bridges
- 41:27and not not always be so adversarial when it comes to represent the people West
- 41:31Virginia. And I know it's too early to speculate, but you'll be completing
- 41:36the term of now. Former Delegate Doug Scat. Any thoughts on the future
- 41:40or do you want to get in there and you know, learn where everything
- 41:43is before we decide if you're gonna run. Yeah, you may get in
- 41:45there day one ago. Man. The same for me. I'm out,
- 41:47you know. But if you thought about that, yeah, I definitely thought
- 41:51about it. You know, like I said, once I get in there
- 41:52and figure it, figure everything out, then I can give you more definitive
- 41:55advantage. But as of now, I mean the thought processes the run,
- 41:59I'm gonna and uh, you know, just be kicking all things as I'll
- 42:01be kicking all my journey and the legislator. Now you are and you kind
- 42:06of touched us a little bit, hollosh. You're known as as quite the
- 42:09big person in the community as far as getting getting things done. What have
- 42:13you learned in your community work or in your business life that you think will
- 42:19serve you well as a legislator? Man? The thing is about it is
- 42:22like I think, you know, being a leadership positions, being in the
- 42:24community, Not everybody's gonna get along. Not everybody's going to have the same
- 42:29uh. I think even if you have the same mission, even if you
- 42:31have the same goal, people have different ways that they want to go about
- 42:35executing that. So you have to be in a position where you can,
- 42:39you know, listen to people, and you have to be in a position
- 42:42where you have to be flexible to get the job done. So that's kind
- 42:45of the biggest thing that I've learned, you know, And how we're close
- 42:49with this. I've talked to people that have gotten to the legislature before,
- 42:52whether it's in Senator, the House, and it's on both sides of the
- 42:54island. They'll say, well, you know, I came in with this
- 42:57list of things I want to want to get this done, but then I
- 42:59got frustrated when I got there because I didn't feel like I could really make
- 43:02a difference. How is Hollis Lewis gonna make a difference. And like I
- 43:06said, I'm gonna get in there and I'm gonna figure out what we can
- 43:08do. I'm gonna figure out what we can do, and I'm gonna figure
- 43:10out how we can influence things that we maybe that's not all large and the
- 43:15things that we uh that we can't obviously due to the extent that we would
- 43:21like to do, but just because we're at such a disadvantage as far as
- 43:22numbers concerned. But I think there's ways to influence even those things that you
- 43:28know that we couldn't fully you know, flesh out. Yeah, well,
- 43:32it's it's a difficult job being in the House of Delegates, I mean for
- 43:36anybody, even even Republicans right now, because and you got to have the
- 43:39ear of the community, and I know the church community, guy, and
- 43:42I know that you're gonna you're gonna do well in Charleston. We wish you
- 43:45the best to luck. I appreciate you having me on. Thank you,
- 43:46and swear Nando's gonna be happening soon, right, yeah, I'll be happening

- 47:01Mayor Goodwin has repeatedly talted Charleston Police Department's high solve rate on crimes. That's
- 47:07a completely made up fictional metric of success, and actual metric is that vital
- 47:10defenders have very low conviction rates in Charleston because officers don't work effectively with prosecutors
- 47:16to achieve actual justice. Then they finger point blame thanks to Councilmember Snodgrass for
- 47:22keeping this reform moving forward. According to a texture Texas, Dave, there
- 47:28are not enough officers in any law enforcement agencies. Speed limit enforcement is non
- 47:31existent. Charleston and Milton are the only agencies that enforce speed limits Texas.
- 47:40The overtime issue has been going on forever. The only thing that changed the
- 47:44administration regarding the police shortage. Do we not remember then Mayor Danny Jones asking
- 47:49city council in twenty seventeen to raise the user fee to hire ten more officers
- 47:53fully staffed. Huh, says a question marked Texas asked Shannon stotographs, or
- 47:59she'll make all her communitys public that she's had with the Truth Squad, Or
- 48:02is a FOIA request necessary? According to a texture to Hollis Lewis, Texture
- 48:07says Hollo sounds like a much better spokesman for the Democratic Party than the device
- 48:12of Mike Pushkin. But that's who they chose, so the Democrats have to
- 48:15live with their choice. According to a text or I five eighty Live has

- 48:44lot to unpack from Councilwoman's Snodgrass was very difficult to follow the point she was
- 48:49trying to make well. She had a lot of points. That's Councilwoman's Snodgrass.
- 48:53She had a lot of points, mainly the problem her major issue seems
- 48:58to be with the overtime situation Charleston. And what she is saying is is
- 49:01that and this is her words, and I'm you know, I'll have her
- 49:05back on again. And by the way, let me just say this,
- 49:07I will gladly have anyone from the City of Charleston on the show to refute
- 49:12any comments that Councilwoman Snydergrass made. You know, we do the Mayor Monday
- 49:15segment when Mayor Goodman once a month. But if she wants to come on,
- 49:19or if Chief of Staff Matt Stutton or anybody wants to come on with
- 49:22the city, I try to be I'm an equal opportunity offender, Ryan.
- 49:25I try to have everybody on as as much as possible, So if somebody
- 49:29wants to come on, I'll let him on. But basically, what council
- 49:31Woman Snydergrass was saying, she's got some problems with the overtime issues. She's
- 49:35saying that the higher ups in the Charleston Police Department are really racking in the
- 49:39overtime and that son she says she's hearing from some of the lower level officers
- 49:45that they aren't getting those same opportunities. And that's what that's what she is
- 49:50alleging. Now, there are audits of the Charleston Police Department, just like
- 49:53they're all all other governmental agencies. I think she wants to see, in
- 49:59her words, a little bit more transparency. I think that is what she
- 50:04is trying to say to do. Let me see. Okay, I agree
- 50:14that Tex says, what about the double dipping for former police chiefs who are
- 50:20collecting retirement while also collecting checks as the heads of public Works and the sanitary
- 50:23Department. It seems like money is loose in Charleston. According to a texture
