- 2:49three five five zero zero AD bring him a man, Rick Kavner, how
- 2:52are you, sir? Good morning, I'm doing fine, Thank you for
- 2:55being here, and it's time for phone. It's don't it was it was
- 3:00I guess postponed for a little while. I was supposed to be made thirteenth
- 3:04and that we you know, due to really severe weather forecast, we made
- 3:08the decision to move it to July twenty second, So that's this Saturday.
- 3:12Yeah, tell us about for people that aren't familiar with because you hear the
- 3:14title Phone with the Dome, and somebody may be listening saying, well,
- 3:16I don't like beer, I'm not gonna go. Yeah. I find those
- 3:20people reprehensible. Now I'm kiddy, I'm kidding, but but you know,
- 3:23it's a whole lot more than than just a beer fast. There's a lot
- 3:27more to it than that talk about. What's funny you say that because when
- 3:29we first started the event in twenty sixteen, people would say, is this
- 3:31a phone party? Are you doing a phone party? Well, it's like,
- 3:34no, it's not, but no it's not, no, no,
- 3:38no, no, it's actually we um we started uh the Capital Region's first
- 3:44ever craft beer festival back in twenty sixteen, Phone with the Dome, and
- 3:46um, every year it's grown. Excuse me, it's grown. Um.
- 3:51It started out at lately Field and it's grown, and now it's so big
- 3:53that we now have it on the Canal Boulevard right in front of the state
- 3:57capital, in front of the Dome. UM. You know this this event
- 4:00historically we have over two hundred beers on tap craft beers even um, even
- 4:05more domestic beers if you're into the more you know, simple domestic beers,
- 4:10we have those as well, ciders, um, seltzers. The list is
- 4:14pretty vast. Uh. That's one of the main highlights is because you know,
- 4:17the the crappier industry has exploded so much, it's incredible. It's a
- 4:20great show off of all the Appalachium excuse me, all the West Virginia beers
- 4:25for sure, all the I think every West Virginia brewery is is represented,
- 4:29but also breweries from around the country. UM. We have a lot of
- 4:32great food vendors. I think we have eight or nine food vendors signed up.
- 4:35Um we have Uh, Charlie Black is going to be our DJ this
- 4:40year on the on the City National Bank stage. UM. And last,
- 4:45and certainly not least, we have to make sure to think Old Colony Rotors.
- 4:47They are the title sponsor of fone with the Dome. They have now
- 4:49been this is their second year as the title actually technically third year as a
- 4:53title sponsor of of Foam with the dome Um and uh, you know again,
- 4:58the event gets bigger every year. Tickets are on sale at Foam CWV
- 5:01dot com right now ahead of the event. They are forty five dollars for
- 5:06general admission, fifty five dollars for early entry. Of course, the event
- 5:12starts at three pm for early entry. For general admission it starts at four
- 5:15pm. The event goes till seven pm for everyone. If you decide to
- 5:19wait and purchase your tickets at the door, they do go up five dollars,
- 5:23so they would be of course fifty and sixty at the door. We
- 5:26also have a designated driver ticket, so if you're coming and you want to
- 5:29just hang out with your friends and you are the designated driver for the evening,
- 5:31we obviously encourage that tickets are only twenty dollars for a designated driver.
- 5:36So a lot of different options there. Historically we have between but depending on
- 5:41the weather, depending on the year. Between eighteen hundred and twenty three hundred
- 5:44people that have attended this event, they have come from sixteen different states,
- 5:49and you know, so we're talking a lot of heads and beds and hotels
- 5:51of people that aren't even from the region, which is great, and that's
- 5:56what all the stuff boils down to. It's great to have a good time
- 5:59and all this again we're talking with that with great capital from Charleston main streets.
- 6:01It's great to have a good time. But it's all about the economy.
- 6:05Man, it's all about as you said, I'm I'm a capitalist.
- 6:08It's all about putting the It's all about putting the heads and beds, and
- 6:12that's what events like this do for not only Charleston but the surrounding area.
- 6:15Yeah. I mean, we're urban economic business development organization. So our goal
- 6:18in our mission is to is to enrich the local business community, to encourage
- 6:24people to not only shop local, but to to live local, be local,
- 6:28be as local as you possibly can, because as we all know,
- 6:30the local economy is what drives our communities and what makes our communities what they
- 6:33are, right, It's how we keep from being quote unquote anywhere USA,
- 6:38right right. So, um, we're fulfilling our mission for several purposes.
- 6:42Whenever we put on phone with the dome, that's one of them. Um.
- 6:45Also it's a fundraiser for our organization. All The money that is raised
- 6:46through this through Front with the Dome as well as our other major fundraisers,
- 6:50go right back into the urban community here in Charleston, in Charleston, West
- 6:56Virginia, specifically the West side and the East end, helping us fulfill our
- 7:00mission to recruit new business to the area of filled up VACAN buildings. You
- 7:02know, public art projects, excuse me, esthetic enhancement projects. The list
- 7:09goes on. So this is this is obviously important for several reasons. How
- 7:12are things going in that department? Let's talk about what you do, you
- 7:15know, other than just planning the phone with the Dome, I mean,
- 7:16how are things going in and getting businesses to come to the area? These
- 7:19small you hate to use it to term MoMA pop because it's so cliche,
- 7:23but it is a lot of times what it is. How is that how's
- 7:26that expansion going for Charleston. You know, we've seen ebbs and flows.
- 7:29I mean it was interesting while the rest of the country was was really most
- 7:32of the rest of the country was really impacted by COVID. Small business was
- 7:35really impacted by COVID. We saw a lot of businesses closed at the time.
- 7:39We didn't see a lot of businesses in Charleston, especially in downtown,
- 7:43West, west Side, East End closed a matter of fact, we saw
- 7:45some open um. We're seeing some of that residual now two three years out
- 7:48from COVID, we've seen a couple of businesses closed. We have a couple
- 7:50of vacant buildings, but we also we're seeing some buildings that have been vacant
- 7:55for a long time. Um, we're seeing lises getting signed. We're seeing
- 7:58new business new whether it's offices, whether it's pubs, restaurants, boutiques.
- 8:03We're seeing these slowly filled back up again. So hopefully that trend was very
- 8:07short for us, and now we're back on the upswing. That's that is
- 8:11our hope, and I think that's what we're seeing. But as far as
- 8:13our projects go, I mean, you know, outside of just business development,
- 8:16and we've talked about this on air a few times, but you know,
- 8:18public space enhancement is a really big part of our mission as well,
- 8:20because if the public space isn't where it should be, then it's not going
- 8:24to be welcoming for people to come into and shop and eat and hopefully live
- 8:30right So our West Side Gateway lighting initiative, we've talked about that a couple
- 8:33of times. We're right in the middle of the execution of that particular initiative
- 8:37we announced at last August. We're currently in the engineering phase right now.
- 8:39We hope to start the construction phase here in the next couple of months.
- 8:43We're going to be replacing all of the lamp posts in the Gateway district,
- 8:48the Elk City district of the west Side. That's been a problem, I
- 8:52think, not to interrupting, that's been a problem, I think for sometimes
- 8:54because there's been stories reported in the news on our station and other outlets that
- 8:58things happen and not so well lit air. That's right, yeah, I
- 9:03mean this project, the number one is safety. Number two is aesthetic enhancement
- 9:05UM. Safety is one hundred percent or safety is the number one concern UM.
- 9:09We're we're gonna take it from more of an orange tungsten lighting that is
- 9:11not very welcoming and inviting at nighttime to a brighter led lighting shining on the
- 9:16street. But also what makes this project very unique for the region is that
- 9:20the lighting will also be shining up onto the facades of the of most of
- 9:22the buildings there, and the colors can be changed it can be changed for
- 9:26you know, depending on the time of year, whether it's a holiday.
- 9:30Um. This is going to sort of a first of its kind for Charleston
- 9:31and it will definitely help brand the area more um but also make it a
- 9:35lot safer. So that's an example of a project that we've undertaken over the
- 9:39last couple of years. A few years now actually we raised over half a
- 9:43million dollars for that project, UM and now we're in the execution phase,
- 9:46so that's really exciting. Most of the murals that you see on the on
- 9:48the buildings on the East End and the West side. A good example is
- 9:52the Dreamer, the guy that's sitting on the bench when you're going into Elk
- 9:54City, the huge mural there, UM. That's that that was a project
- 9:58of hours. Those are the types of projects that we undertake to make Charleston
- 10:03stand out from other cities, to make them feel like a destination and be
- 10:07a destination. And so those are just examples of the projects that we that
- 10:11we execute as an organization. And again, these events like from of the
- 10:15Dome help us raise the money we need to operate to execute those projects.
- 10:20We have it. We have a small staff, we have an incredibly dedicated
- 10:24group of volunteers and board members that help us execute our projects every year.
- 10:28Um, but we're you know, we're a smaller organization, but we're really
- 10:31proud of the work that we do. It's amazing to me, getting back
- 10:35to the beer aspect of it, it is amazing to me the popularity of
- 10:37craft beers and these breweries are the last couple of years, not only in
- 10:41West Virginia, but but elsewhere. And you know, people I was in
- 10:45I was in Morgantown, you know, for a couple of days at the
- 10:46end of last week. And when people walk into an establishment, Um,
- 10:50that's if they're not going into an actual brewery, they're going into the local
- 10:56pub or the hotel bar or whatever. That's the first thing they're asking.
- 10:58They're not they're not necessarily today saying you give me a chords light, metal
- 11:01light, bud light, whatever. They're right, they're saying, what what
- 11:05do you have local? I mean, and this is such a I don't
- 11:09know, it just kind of exploded overnight a couple of a few years ago.
- 11:11Well, I mean you may recall, I'm sure you. I mean,
- 11:13you pay attention to politics as close as I do. I mean,
- 11:16you know, you may recall back in twenty fifteen, Dave, when the
- 11:18and I was actually active in this particular bill um when the bill that was
- 11:24passed to expand not only to allow for growlers to be filled um in in
- 11:28several other types of establishments that allowed for new revenue streams for local business,
- 11:33but it was also to encourage the expansion of the craft brew industry. After
- 11:37that bill was passed in twenty fifteen, that was a vary by bipartisan effort.
- 11:41Like across the board, everyone was behind this. After that bill passed,
- 11:43we saw I think at the time there were like nine craft breweries in
- 11:46West Virginia, and I think the numbers in the thirties or forty forties or
- 11:50fifties. Now I can't remember the exact number, but I mean, of
- 11:52course that was eight years ago. But but that really helped at least propel
- 11:56um that that whole that industry in that concept. And now I think to
- 12:01your point, what you're getting at is that this is this not only is
- 12:03is it a culture of its own, but it's also an economy. Yes,
- 12:07we're talking about people travel for for hundreds of miles just to try new
- 12:09breweries because it doesn't experience and we're show me the money. We're yeah,
- 12:13we're concentrating that right here in Charleston in front of the dome this Saturday.
- 12:16Right, let's let's kind of wrap it up here phone with the dome.
- 12:20Uh talk about where to get tickets? Good as it's foam CWV dot com.
- 12:24Um you can. You can purchase and download your ticket right there and
- 12:26scan it at the door. You do, say five dollars if you don't
- 12:35physically where is that's a great question. Our gate the gate for entry is
- 12:39uh near Greenbrier Street. Okay, So we're only gonna have one entrance this
- 12:43year. Last year we had two. We had one at California want a
- 12:45Greenbrier. Greenbrier was much more trafficked. So we've made the decision to Well,
- 12:48when you're dealing with volunteers too, it's kind of hard to have everybody
- 12:52spread out everywhere. That's we have wonderful volunteers. Over two hundred volunteers are
- 12:56helping us at this event and we couldn't do it without him, and we're
- 12:58trying to make it a little easier on them this year. So um,
- 13:01yeah, if you if you in. Tons of parking is available at the
- 13:05Capitol in the garage there, but also all throughout the streets, um throughout
- 13:09the east end, and it's a short walk over to the Green Briar Street
- 13:13entrance about right around the Governor's mansion actually is where on the canall Bolivart is
- 13:16where you'll see the where you'll see the gate. Okay, good stuff.
- 13:20We wish you the best of luck with everything. We'll have to have you
- 13:22on again because that's you know, I'm kind of a geek about the stuff.
- 13:24No, not beer necessarily but that too. But but the but the
- 13:28economic aspect of it, what these things. So I'll have you on again
- 13:31to talk about that. I appreciate it of course, like a sam ago.
- 13:33And time start to start any time is three pm for early entry folks
- 13:37and four pm for general admission. All right, we'll see you there.

- 16:47Wait Tech says, are we going to discuss the Charleston PD situation that
- 16:51came up in the city council meeting? Yes, as it's top of the
- 16:52show. I am. A little bit later on the show, it was
- 16:56Ever saying some discussion of the Charleston City Council meeting about that. We've got
- 17:00stories posted on all the websites and things of that nature. So yeah,
- 17:03we're gonna talk about that a little bit later on. I want to talk
- 17:06with our good friend Johnny Rutherford. How are you, sir? I'm great,
- 17:08Dave, how are you? I am doing fine? Man that we're
- 17:11bringing a whole lot of people into the Canal Valley this weekend. I just
- 17:14had Rick Cavetrod talking about Foam with the Dome. A couple thousand people expected
- 17:18to turn out for that, but not to be outdone. You got people,
- 17:22he said, he had people coming in I think from sixteen different states
- 17:25or what had been in the past for Foae with the Dome. You're gonna
- 17:27try to top sixteen states. Well, we can't get there, but it's
- 17:30our first year of the tournament and it's going to be the largest pickleball tournament
- 17:33ever in the state of West Virginia. We have people coming in from six
- 17:37different states, Okay, and that's it's it mainly border states because it can't
- 17:41be all border because because there's gotta be one because we don't haven't to be
- 17:44border states. We've got one from Florida, we got one from Oklahoma,
- 17:47and we have a couple from Missouri. Okay. We're it's it's it's been
- 17:51advertising nationally and people are coming in because they're excited about the Nitro Complex,
- 17:55the brand new complex, and they're excited about Pickaball. So they're coming from
- 17:59everywhere. I mean, Nitro is going to be an exciting plays. A
- 18:00matter of fact, Joe Stevens from the city's going to join us on the
- 18:03show tomorrow. Next Monday, My Mayor my weekly Mayor Monday segments could be
- 18:07Mayor Caseball. There's a lot of stuff going on in Nitro. They're great
- 18:11to work with. They've they've got a great facility, they've done a good
- 18:14job with it. The mayor's great personality and we've been a good team along
- 18:18with the staff. So it's been it's been it's been exciting. So what
- 18:19a we got going on? I mean, because all starts I guess Friday
- 18:23night, right, it starts Friday night. We've done a good job.
- 18:26The Charleston Pickleball Club with Todd File and Matt Duncan have helped me a great
- 18:30deal. And what we have is Friday Night from five to eight is community
- 18:33to night. And they'll be free swimming, free splash park. We'll have
- 18:36music there a gentleman named Scott Honicker who's been a Nashville singing He's a local
- 18:40guy. I actually know. I worked at an event, not law deal
- 18:42with Scott. He played at the Westerndinia Food Truck Festival. Yeah. What
- 18:47a great talent he is. Matt Scott's awesome. He's he's wanting to help
- 18:49us. Of course you know where we've hired him, but he's wanting to
- 18:52help us because it's a local event. They'll be pickleball for the people that
- 18:56are in the tournament to get warmed up. There'll be free pickleball lessons for
- 18:59those who have never played pickleball, will welcome through, show them the rules
- 19:02and show them how to play. We're very excited about that. We'll have
- 19:04food trucks, dem two Brothers will be there. Check Filab will be there,
- 19:07We'll have the Charleston Safety Firehouse there, will have ConA Ice there.
- 19:12Then Metro nine one one will be teaching the kids at the pool and the
- 19:15parents how to call nine one one and when to call nine one one.
- 19:18That's kind of an important thing when you think about it, because I mean,
- 19:21that's something I really hadn't thought about, is how and when to call
- 19:23nine one one. And I know that's kind of your field outside pickleball.
- 19:26That's your other field of expertise, is the whole nine one one thing.
- 19:30That's very important to chance tocate kids on that. And that's dumlad you said
- 19:33that. This is sponsored by Metro nine one one and our tournaments called serving
- 19:37for safety because our employees serve for safety to all the law enforcement, EMS
- 19:41and fire and our citizens every day. So that's that's what a tournament is
- 19:45about. And that's what we want to do is educate a lot of the
- 19:47children on community night on what to do when there's an emergency in their house,
- 19:49if if their parents aren't available. Now to talk with Johnny Rutherford again
- 19:53about this big pickleball event. Now, a lot of these events are going
- 19:56on on Friday, but Saturday you get people coming in from, as you
- 19:59said, all over as far away as Missouri to take part in this tournament.
- 20:03Oklahoma, Missouri, Florida. And we have two hundred and thirty two
- 20:06players, which is probably fifty to sixty players, more than any tournament every
- 20:10in the state of West Virginia. We'll be there all day Saturday, all
- 20:12day Sunday. We start at am on Saturday and probably go to five or
- 20:15six in the evening the eight am on Sunday and go to five to six
- 20:18in the evening. People are welcome to come watch. The mayor has agreed
- 20:22to let people watch without a cost to get in of course, to pull
- 20:26if you come on Saturdays and then we'll call something Friday night. It's free.
- 20:29But bring your bring your lawn chair, bring your chair, come set
- 20:32beside the courts, and watch some great pickaball players. Now explain, and
- 20:36you've been on the show several times talking about this, but in case people
- 20:37may have missed, it explained the whole game of pickaball to us John pickaballs
- 20:41across between tennis and table tennis. It's on a smaller chord. It's played
- 20:47with a plastic ball. It's a quick moving It's a quick moving sport.
- 20:51The great thing about the sport it doesn't matter your gender, it doesn't matter
- 20:53your size because the courts lay way, the course laid out, and the
- 20:56rules that you could be a I've play with young late or ladies. There
- 21:02are sixty six and five foot two and hundred ten pounds and I'm six two
- 21:04two thirty and they beat me. It's an amazing game. It's just a
- 21:07great game. And that's what's so great about It's a very competitive no matter
- 21:11of your gin jewers size, and we're I mean, it's just like suddenly
- 21:12popped up over the last couple of years because I had never heard of it,
- 21:15and then one of my friends or something maybe I saw on social media
- 21:19was talking about playing in this pickaball tourm I was like, what the heck
- 21:22is pickleball? And it just kind of I mean, I know it's been
- 21:25around for what do you have any idea what the history of the game is
- 21:26or where it came from and how the heck it became so popular all of
- 21:30a sudden. Personally, I don't The Charleston pickaball clubs are more into that
- 21:33I picked. I found it five years ago. I was down North Calina
- 21:37on vacation and some friends asked me to play, and I played, and
- 21:40I came home and really didn't have anybody to play with. And then I
- 21:41ran into the Charleston Pickleball Club and they have a WhatsApp app and we meet
- 21:45in South Charleston at Jackson Park and at Nitro and we have on Tuesday and
- 21:49Thursdy evenings. We have fifty sixty people playing every every night. It's amazing.
- 21:53Well, anything that gets people out of the house and put down devices,
- 21:56especially younger people, not to stay type, but to get him out
- 22:00of the house, get him to do something, I think is always a
- 22:03positive thing. Yeah, you had a good point there too about the younger
- 22:06people, because I said myself, I'm sixty six now, which is a
- 22:08good sport for some my age. But most of the people that play are
- 22:14thirty year old professionals. There's bankers, there's lawyers, there's architects, and
- 22:18it's an amazing So it's an amazing social event. And that's what's great about
- 22:21it. Whether you've been playing for ten years and you're really good or you're
- 22:23new, it's a social event and they bring you in and teach you and
- 22:26they want you to be part of it. It's it's that's part of Pickaball
- 22:29is the social atmosphere. They move that forward. You know, it's kind
- 22:33of interesting. This is kind of deciding to hear one of my good friends
- 22:36from from high school. I keep up with him on social media. I
- 22:41haven't seen him in I don't think since we graduated high school. We keep
- 22:44up on Facebook. And he just placed and actually won his division in a
- 22:49nationally recognized pickleball turner but in Arkansas, and he's my age, and he's
- 22:53already turned fifty three. So again, I mean, he's still out there
- 22:57doing it at fifty three is not old, neither six six bot. But
- 23:02you know, I mean this thing is is huge and you can do it
- 23:04regardless of your age. Yeah. Right. You know, I've kind of
- 23:07stayed out of playing it this weekend, but we needed to play. You
- 23:10just didn't want to dominate, right. Well, I'm not sure about that
- 23:12exactly, but I stayed out of playing, but we actually had an individual
- 23:17sign up that didn't have a partner, So I'm gonna go ahead and play
- 23:18with him. He's he's he's in his mid seventies, he's from Pittsburgh.
- 23:22He's driving out here to play. So I'm gonna play with him this weekend.
- 23:25That's so, that's that's amazing stuff. How long does um an average
- 23:29pickleball? Do you is? Do you refer to it as a game or
- 23:30a matcher? You know, either a match game. It depends on the
- 23:36on their skill level. But it takes probably about about twenty minutes fifteen to
- 23:40twenty minutes for a game. And during the tournament, each person will play
- 23:42forty six games, so you you know, you get to play quite a
- 23:45few games and everything depending on if you if you keep winning, the more
- 23:48games will play. And there's it's my skill set. Uh. They have
- 23:51beginners, then we have people that are advanced. Then it's also about age.
- 23:55It's all about it up to try to make it fair during the tournaments
- 23:56and the it's almost it's becoming like tennis or like golf as far as the
- 24:02equipment, you know. And I noticed this, as I said, I
- 24:04keep up with my friend who lives in Arkansas who just won a big you
- 24:08know, nationally recognized turniment out there, and he's always posting things like golfers
- 24:14would on his Facebook page, this is my new x J seven paddle or
- 24:18whatever, you know. I mean, it's it's that's a big business as
- 24:22well. Yeah, you can go to Dicks or when the local sports pleepoint
- 24:26and pick up a racket for twelve to twenty five dollars. Once you get
- 24:30serious and if you play and you really want to, you get into it.
- 24:33The paddles cost anywhere from one hundred and fifty to three hundred and thirty
- 24:37three dollars, so it gets expensive. The balls are inexpensive, but the
- 24:40paddles can get expensive. You have a hard time. I mean again,
- 24:42I'm trying to picture this. Do you like with tennis balls or golf balls?
- 24:45But they just go flying all over the place and you lose a few,
- 24:48No, if you you have to, if you're good, I guess
- 24:51not. Yeah, right, And now they don't because you picture when you
- 24:52were young and you're playing with football, a ball with holes all the way
- 24:57around. That's what it is. So the distance, the speed of the
- 25:00game is very quick because it's close. You're close to each other. But
- 25:03the distance and the balls you don't have. You really don't have a problem
- 25:07with that. You might have to be not being very skilled knocking it right
- 25:10and left, but the balls they pretty much been in a certain area.
- 25:12How long did it when you started playing? How long did it take you
- 25:15to get pretty good at it? Well? I thought I was pretty good
- 25:18in six months. I thought that was pretty good. In six months,
- 25:21I was playing with just some close friends. Yeah, and then when I
- 25:22got with the Charleston Pickleball Club, the skill level went up. And I'm
- 25:26what you call probably a three zero to three point five. I'm I'm an
- 25:30average player. And I've been playing for about two years now, a couple
- 25:36of nights a week, because I've always I was talking to another friend of
- 25:37mine who just happy to pick up the game of golf. And he this
- 25:41is a guy who was a high school athlete and everything, and and it's
- 25:42forties. He decided to pick up the game of golf. And he was
- 25:45telling me last week he said, this is the most frustrating game I've ever
- 25:48seen in my entire life. He said, because I was able to master
- 25:51baseball as a young man, Baseball, football, basketball, he said,
- 25:55golf kicks my butt on a daily or well, however, and he plays
- 26:00on a regular basis it's just the nature of sports. I guess five of

- 26:15talk about these events, and I did this with the Rick two, I
- 26:18always like to talk about the economic impact. And I know it's the first
- 26:22time that you've had an event like this, but there'll be people studying this
- 26:26and coming back and saying, Okay, what can we do differently next year
- 26:30or whatever. But when you've got people coming in, as you said,
- 26:33from as far away as Oklahoma and Missouri, that's kind of the theme of
- 26:37the day. Going back to what Cavender said, you know, that's gonna
- 26:40put heads in beds, and that's gonna put people in restaurants and things of
- 26:42that nature. Yeah, we're excited. Like I say, we had a
- 26:45good team between the Nitro and the Pickleball Club and we actually went we decided
- 26:49to early want to go national with this. The troll through pickleball brackets dot
- 26:53Com and pretty much that that company pushes your tournament out and it advertises nationwide,
- 26:59and we have six six players coming in from out of state, but
- 27:02their families are coming off sea and they're staying at the local and they're not
- 27:04gonna play the entire time. They're not gonna play, They're not gonna do
- 27:07their match. And leaf we have a you know, yeah, we have
- 27:08a few people coming in in their motor homes and they're gonna they're gonna they're
- 27:11gonna stay at a local area, so they're gonna have that. And we
- 27:15have the motels. Local motels given discounts and just because we say six states,
- 27:19but we have a lot of people come from Morgantown and the northern part
- 27:22of the state and they can't drop. They will, yeah, they were
- 27:26their people also their players also, but they will stay local also because you
- 27:30know there's yeah, Bridge Sports a big area for pickleball, uh, the
- 27:33Bridgeport and Morgantown, so a lot of them people are coming down to play
- 27:37Saturday and Sunday, so they'll be staying in the local hotels too. That's
- 27:40what we like to hear. Okay, uh recap it for us again the
- 27:44of what's happening Friday night and into Saturday. John Okay Sunday, Yeah,
- 27:47Friday, five day, it's free city in Nitro. We have food vendors
- 27:49there to purchase food, free swimming, free splash park, free music,
- 27:55free pickleball lessons and one big thing. We still have openings for the pickle
- 27:59eating content. And well we have Ryan. You listen to this man pickle
- 28:03that that's my producer Ryan. He's all about that. Okay. Well,
- 28:06Mount Olive Pickle and North Calina and we've worked with them. They sent us
- 28:07product and we're gonna in five minutes. Whoever eats most pickles wins one hundred
- 28:11dollars cash wow plus a trophy. And then of course all day Saturday and
- 28:15Sundays the tournament. We invite you to come out if you have an interest
- 28:18in pickleball, if you just have an interesting community events, come out and
- 28:21watch it. You'll love it all right, John, wish you the best
- 28:23to like man, it's a pleasure to have you on the show. Good
- 28:26luck with everything. And this has been a big undertaking viewers. You've been
- 28:27on several times to talk about it. We wish you to bet the weather

- 28:34couple of days and with storms or whatnot, but they say to buy this

- 35:05night, council member Shannon Snodgrass is calling for an independent investigation into alleged sexual
- 35:13misconduct as it concerns Charleston Police Chief Tie Hunt. Now. The story is
- 35:16posted at WCHS network dot com. Councilperson's Snodgrass is alleging that the majority of
- 35:23city council members were aware of the allegations. Supposedly there were messages sent via
- 35:30a city issued cell phone or some sort of a device. Shannon Snodgrass says
- 35:35that the woman who made the allegations had made complaints to the mayor, other
- 35:37members of the city police, the other members of the department, and the
- 35:40city's attorney. The city attorney confirmed last night in a statement to WCHS Network
- 35:47that a complaint was made and had been investigated. The statement, which is
- 35:55part of the story, is posted if you'd like to see at a w
- 35:59chswork dot com and it says quote I meaning the city's Attorney's office can assure
- 36:06you that all the complaints received by the city, including this one, are
- 36:08seriously investigated. Again, this is a city attorney talking. The city's HR
- 36:13department investigates complaints against city employees, makes recommendations, and implements discipline. It
- 36:17is city policy not to comment on specific HR matters resources resource matters, which
- 36:23translated means HR. Again. The story's posted with statements from the city attorney
- 36:29at WCHS network dot com if you'd like to read that now. Again,
- 36:32it's important to note that these are merely allegations at this point. So they're
- 36:40allegations at this point. So we are okay, Ryan, I don't know
- 36:45what's going on at person says that they are trying the number and it's not
- 36:49happening. We're having phone issues in there or what. So we're working.
- 36:52Tristan Levitt is trying to get hold of us here, but he's sending me
- 36:58sending me text matches. Says he's trying to get through and it's not working.
- 37:01So I don't know exactly what the issue is with the phone. We
- 37:06are working. We are effort. He may want to see you can get
- 37:07Cooper somebody down here to see what the problem is. But he's he's trying.
- 37:12Is Tristan Levitt, who's a candidate for a house. He was traveling
- 37:15this morning, from what I understand, and U en up in the northern
- 37:17part of the state, traveling on business and he was going to call us
- 37:20up to talk about his candidacy, and he says he is trying, but
- 37:23it is not going through. So all right, so that's the story.
- 37:29Going back to the to the city council situation last night against Shannon Sondergrass city
- 37:32council person is asking for an independent investigation. The city has released that statement
- 37:37and again you can see it posted at WCHS network dot com. Okay,
- 37:44we okay, Well we're still trying to get to Tristan for some reason,
- 37:47but we don't have Triston, so let's go to Jerry. You're up on
- 37:51five eighty Live. Go ahead, Hey, good morning, Dave. You
- 37:54know I knew Tyke when he was a Tyke. I worked with his father
- 38:00on the fire department for many years. And you know, I really don't
- 38:05have an opinion on what's going on right now, but that's not why I
- 38:07called. If you don't mind, I want to go off topic for just
- 38:14a Secondly, don't have a topic right now, so go ahead, okay,
- 38:16okay. So when I heard you're a guest talking about craft beers and
- 38:21all that kind of thing, it reminded me. You know, my family
- 38:24had what they called beer joints back in the day. Did you know that
- 38:30there was a state law that you could not light up a commercial beer sign
- 38:37like Budweiser or Stroves. Back in the day, I used to collect beer
- 38:43signs and if it was a really great beer sign, I'll live up beautiful.
- 38:49They had to take the lights out as soon as they crossed the border
- 38:52of West Virginia because the law said you could not have a Budweiser sign or
- 38:59any other commercial sign lit up. So you would see, like in my
- 39:04uncle's place, a little sign in the window that was lit up and it
- 39:08said cold beer. You were allowed to have a sign that said cold beer,
- 39:14but it could not be a commercial sign. And I thought that was
- 39:17one of the dumbest laws I've ever heard of. In my wife, you
- 39:23may have given me an idea for a future segment, because we've had this
- 39:27sort of thing before, the dumb advertising laws in the past, things that
- 39:30I've seen in my career in radio. But go ahead, Well, what
- 39:32I'm curious about did we did we finally get rid of that law? I
- 39:37mean, I don't go in the bars. I've never had a beer in
- 39:39my life, But are you allowed to have a lit up Budweiser sign?
- 39:45You can? You can? Well, I mean there's too far, far,
- 39:47too many of them out there for for it not to be legal.
- 39:51I would think, well, I mean, think about the fifties and sifties,
- 39:54you could say the same thing that was illegal, and again just the
- 40:00dumb law. And I was just curious if anybody knew if that law,
- 40:05you know, was finally thrown out. All right, we'll look into it,
- 40:08Jerry, I gotta get I appreciate it. Thank thirteen minutes away from
- 40:10ten, I think we have Tristan Levitt, Ryan, we have we have
- 40:14Triston on the show. Tristan, good morning, how are you? Hey?
- 40:15Good morning? I'm well so sorry about the like I wasn't able to
- 40:19get through before. Okay, well, you know it's the thousands of people
- 40:22to call the show. That's what it is. Well, we're gonna blame
- 40:23it on that. How's that. Tristan Levitt is a Republican candidate House of
- 40:28District fifty three. First of all, sir, explain what is District fifty
- 40:30three? What area we talking about? Sure? So it runs from just
- 40:35north the very north tip of Edgewood up over Mink Shoals and then kind of
- 40:39runs down underneath the camp underneath the Knskin Park goes along Oak Ridge and really
- 40:45all this area just north of the river from the capital, so all the
- 40:49way out to Belle includes Campbell's Creek, So just that kind of wide stretch
- 40:52north of the river, north of the capitals. Okay, so why are
- 40:55you running for office? So my is an original native of Charleston and she
- 41:01went to Capitol High School here in our area, and we have five kids
- 41:06here in this area, and it just seems like this is a very exciting
- 41:08but crucial time for West Virginia to be able to tackle some of these key
- 41:12issues like education, like the structure of the state government, some of the
- 41:16challenges with PIA or staffing shortages. There's a lot of really important issues.
- 41:22And my background as a lawyer and working on a lot of other policy issues
- 41:27I think will help me to attack them those issues and try and contribute to
- 41:30the progress that again is really exciting for West Virginia right now that we're really
- 41:35on the cusp of But there really needs some serious, thoughtful policy consideration.
- 41:38What you know, the Republicans have the supermajorities you well know in West Virginia,
- 41:43and there's been I spend my time talking about the pros and content,
- 41:46not myself necessarily, but the listeners and the textures and whatever callers. Do
- 41:50you know about the pros and the cons of that to what do you attribute
- 41:54being a Republican yourself? What do you contribute the the rise in the popularity
- 41:59of the Republican Party in West Virginia. Two? It's an interesting question.
- 42:02I mean, obviously, having had democratic control for so long in this state,
- 42:07I think that's that's one element of it, is that you frequently see
- 42:09voters turned from one side together some of the some you know, some of
- 42:14the those like coal workers and others industries that have been while set in place
- 42:19for so long in West Virginia have really been attacked here in our state.
- 42:22And so I think that's put a lot of voters up for grabs. A
- 42:25lot of cultural issues have really become you know that before weren't the province of
- 42:30one party or the other. But you know, someone who is pro life,
- 42:32who's pro gun right now, you know, might not feel at home
- 42:36in one of the two parties. And so I think I think that's had
- 42:37a big impact on the shift. Tristan again, we're talking with Tristan Levitt,
- 42:42who's a campaign for a House of District fifty three a candidate, I
- 42:45should say, your campaign released some information over the weekend, and to put
- 42:50it quite frankly, sir, you aren't doing too badly in the fundraising department,
- 42:53and which is not bad since you didn't even start, you know,
- 42:57raising money, you know, there for some time. I think you made
- 42:59your official candida to see announcement in April. Apparently your message is resonating with
- 43:04people pretty relatively early on. Why do you think that is well? I
- 43:08think people recognize that, you know, again, experience is really critical when
- 43:12it comes to governance, right. It's useful to be able to study out
- 43:15issues. It's useful to be able to dig deep. Another piece that is
- 43:19really important to me is that I focus a lot on transparency. I focus
- 43:22a lot on the importance of oversight and government, and I think everybody can
- 43:28relate to that, no matter what part of the political spectrum you're on.
- 43:31We all know that, you know, we don't want to see waste,
- 43:34farad and abuse in the government. We all know that when good people come
- 43:37forward to point out problems, we should listen to those folks. And so
- 43:38I think those are all issues that have resonated for people, and I've been
- 43:42very grateful for their support, and I want to talk about that kind of
- 43:45transition away from the campaign. We'll get back to it here in a couple
- 43:47of moments. Again, we're talking with Tristan Levin as a candidate for House
- 43:51in District fifty three. You've been making the rounds here a whole lot.
- 43:54I know you're on the road today talking about whistle blowing. Explain explained that
- 44:00aspect of your life in your career. Yeah. Absolutely So. When I've
- 44:04finished law school, I got hired by Senator Truck Grassley on the Senate Judiciary
- 44:07Committee in Washington, d C. And my very first within a week,
- 44:12I was working with a guy named John Dodson, is an APF agent,
- 44:15and he was blowing the whistle on something called the Operation Fast and Furious,
- 44:17and that really, you know, again fortuitous, lee set off this very
- 44:22long path where I've just worked with hundreds and hundreds of whistleblowers, first on
- 44:25Capitol Hill where I worked for eight years, and then into leading to agencies
- 44:29during the Trump administration. And so I just have become a very very firm
- 44:32believer that you know, you have to be able to protect people who come
- 44:36forward to point out waste, fraud and abuse from the government. And that's
- 44:39not always a popular issue. One party tend depending on which party is in
- 44:43power, which party has the lighthouse, you know, people tend to like
- 44:46it sometimes and not like it other times. But I just think across the
- 44:49board, it's so important to have those protections. And so we're working with
- 44:53some high profile whistle blowers right now. But again, even in those cases,
- 44:57it's come down to this thing where people disregard information that they don't like
- 45:01or cheer on information that they do like, even if they're not really familiar
- 45:05with the details. And I think that's a real problem for just even across
- 45:08the board oversight and transparent governance in this country. Do you think that just
- 45:14take it back to the state capital for a moment, do you think that
- 45:15West Virginia as a whole, I know it's a blanket statement, Tristram,
- 45:19but do you think that West Virginia state government as a whole needs to do
- 45:22a better job of transparency. I think every state government can do a better
- 45:25job of transparency. I think I think that's just a key issue. I
- 45:29think some really great things that have happened in the past few years. I'm
- 45:31really what impressed with Czech with Quest Virginia, with what the Auditor's office has
- 45:36done there. I think there are a number of areas where there is a
- 45:38lot of transparency and those are great steps, and so I think I think
- 45:42for the legislature to build on those is really important. But again, there's
- 45:46no question that in every state, and it's just human nature, right,
- 45:50in human nature, it's to kind of not want to always, you know,
- 45:53not have someone looking over your shoulder to second guess your decisions. But
- 45:58the American people have a right to do that. Certainly the people of West
- 46:00Virginia do. So I think there's a lot of ways we could improve transparency
- 46:02in the state government. How's the campaign been for you so far? I
- 46:06mean out talking to people and shaking hands and doing the whole thing. How's
- 46:08it been so far? It's been fantastic. I love talking to people.
- 46:12I love hearing their experiences, all hearing their concerns. I also really appreciate,
- 46:16you know, right now, people don't always talk to each other if
- 46:20they have different political views in our country, so you know, I love
- 46:22hearing from people who say I disagree with you on X and Y and Z
- 46:24issue. I want to talk about why and those are really meaningful conversations to
- 46:29me to walk through those, you know, because you can have so much
- 46:30respect for another person, you can agree to disagree, you can you know,
- 46:35disagree without being disagreeable. But so it's been a wonderful experience getting to
- 46:38know more of my neighbors and better understanding the concerns that people having District fifty
- 46:43three. Where can people learn more about your campaign? Tristram, It's Levitt
- 46:46for WV dot com. And that's l E A V I T T appearally
- 46:52on that right. Yep, that's exactly right. I love it. And
- 46:54then fo r okay, So all right, final thirty seconds. This is
- 46:59what I call my elevators. Each final thirty Why should someone vote for Tristan?
- 47:01Tristan Levin? If I can get your name right, that's my fault,
- 47:05Tristan Levin. Why should people to vote for you? I'm absolutely committed
- 47:08to ensuring that we do the homework and do the research on the hard issues
- 47:12their state faces. We've got great economic news and announcements in recent times,
- 47:15but what is left for the legislature to tackle are some really thirty issues,
- 47:19and I will put the time and the work into attacking those to get the
- 47:22best outcomes for the people of West Virginia. All right, well, we'll
- 47:24have you on several times between now and the election next year. I've apologized
- 47:29we had a little problem getting you on the air, but we got you.
