- 0:22We were talking about Taekwon robertson what a you know, what a strange
- 0:26twist for him. Last year he wins the job, he gets hurt in
- 0:29the first game, he's out for the year. Then this year he's kind
- 0:33of the incumbent, but he gets beaten out for the job. Now he's
- 0:36back in the job. So, first of all, playing without playing,
- 0:40you know, in live action for a guy like him for a year,
- 0:44what's that like? And how do you expect he's going to adapt to getting
- 0:47back in the flow. Well, unfortunately, and fortunately he got plays last
- 0:54week. You know, he got more than a half of playtime, you
- 0:56know, And I say unfortunately because Joe got hurt and you never want anyone
- 1:00to get hurt, but it did give take On a chance to go out
- 1:04there and throw the ball around, and I thought he did a really nice
- 1:07job. So I think that he'll respond well. He's a guy that has
- 1:11always paid attention and done the extra work, even when he wasn't starting the
- 1:19first two weeks. You know, he did the extra work, and I
- 1:23think that'll pay off for him. So I'm excited to see him play.
- 1:27And at the same time, like I said, it's a catch twenty two
- 1:30because you know, you hate what happened to Joe. You hate what happened
- 1:34to Joe. Take Kwon Robertson was nineteen to thirty and as you mentioned,
- 1:38and I agree with you that you it was some empty yardage. There was
- 1:42a twenty eight nothing game. But I felt like it was maybe the one
- 1:46positive that came out of that thing. He got a chance to get some
- 1:48reps. He threw the ball down the field, He connected with Brett Buckman
- 1:52a few times, cam Ross. He looked comfortable to me, and I
- 1:56got to feel like for the coaching staff and Nick Charlton, you obviously everybody
- 2:00else, that has to get me a pretty good feeling going forward here In
- 2:04the next weekend. Yeah, I think you're right, Mike. I mean,
- 2:06just getting those reps having success throwing the football, building that confidence,
- 2:13you know as a quarterback, you know, throwing the ball and having success.
- 2:15I mean, that's just going to build build confidence. And uh,
- 2:20you know, kind of getting a little rapport going with with Brett Buckman there.
- 2:23I think that's very helpful. And uh, you know, I have
- 2:29all the confidence in the world that take Kuan to go out and play well,
- 2:31and we've got to do a good job of supporting him. And you
- 2:34know, one of the things we have to do to help take Kuan is
- 2:37we've got to we've got to run the ball better. You know, we've
- 2:38got to find a way on defense to get some takeaways and and uh,
- 2:44you know, give give our offense field position. We did it one time
- 2:46last week we missed a field goal, but we got to do it more
- 2:50so. Yeah, you kin, last year we did a nice job of
- 2:54turning other teams over. They're about dead even in the turnover battle so far.
- 2:59These first two games are minus three and it feels like, you know,
- 3:02things haven't gone your way in a sense when you've gotten first downs.
- 3:07The other night at Georgia's state. Two penalties killed those a fumbled punts put
- 3:13the other team in great field position. These are things that get you behind
- 3:16the eight ball a little bit. And I'm sure you're you've got to be
- 3:19thinking, let's stop doing that stuff, and I think we'll be okay.
- 3:23Yeah, here, I'll give you some. I'll give you a couple real
- 3:25quick. So you're talking about, you know, last last week there was
- 3:30really some significant things in terms of you know, self inflicted wounds and that
- 3:37really hurt our ability to sustained drives. You know, we have five penalties
- 3:43on offense and if you look at those penalties, I'm getting my notes out
- 3:46of here. Here's what happened is uh, you got a second hang in
- 3:52there with me for a second, there hanging there's fourteen penalties, by the
- 3:54way, in the first two games. I know you can't be happy with
- 3:58that. Uh, I'm not happy with that at all. I'm not happy
- 4:01with any penalties. But you know so well, I can just tell you
- 4:08this. They were they You know, we run the ball for I think
- 4:12sixteen yards and have a hold. So now instead of first and ten,
- 4:15I think it's second and seventeen. Then becomes third and sixteen, we have
- 4:18to punt, and we have I can't find it right now. We have
- 4:23some other things that there's penalties. They're killers. They're killers, especially when
- 4:27you're fighting for your life the way we're fighting for our lives. So,
- 4:30you know, we've just got to make sure that when we're detailed and and
- 4:32better with our hands and better with our technique and uh, you know,
- 4:38penalties are a lot of times a function of not putting yourself in a good
- 4:42position, and so you have to reach your grab, uh you know,
- 4:46or try to cheat cheat your way out of the play, and we can't
- 4:48let that happen. Yeah, the running game you mentioned first first week against
- 4:54NC State, a one hundred and sixty yards with seventy one on one touchdown
- 4:57run. The running game just wasn't there against George's State. And I don't
- 5:02know, you know, I'm sure you're pouring over at the tape trying to
- 5:06figure out how why can't we open more holes here? I mean, last
- 5:10year random balls so well, but the last year's last year you got four
- 5:13offensive linemen back from that group. You know, I thought that would be
- 5:17the unit you could really depend on again. But at least against Georgia's state
- 5:20that was in the case. What did you see on tape when you looked
- 5:24at that, Well, I think it's it's it's it's the it's my responsibility
- 5:30to make sure that we're doing the things that our players do best and putting
- 5:32them in the best position, doing things that they've perfected through repetition, and
- 5:39then going out and practicing the looks that we're going to see in demanding excellence
- 5:42in practice, and then reviewing the tape and correcting any any mistakes that we
- 5:46make and going out and repeating it so that we're working more towards perfection and
- 5:51being exact. And I would say that the player's job is then to take
- 5:56that and transferred onto the field on Saturdays, I would say that none of
- 6:00us have done a good enough job of doing that. We haven't necessarily put
- 6:05our players in the best position, and they haven't necessarily executed up to their
- 6:11to their ability. And so you just keep emphasizing that, working towards it,
- 6:15demanding it in practice, demanding it in meetings, and because we have
- 6:20a group of young men that really care, you expect that there will be
- 6:25results. And I expect that there will be results. You know, the
- 6:29defensive side of the ball. Against NC State, no big plays by them
- 6:33for the most part. They had a couple of three drives that worked for
- 6:38the Wolfpack. But this week against Georgia State, there were a number of
- 6:41big plays yardage wise. How deflating is that for the defense and how do
- 6:45you prevent that? I mean, that's not something obviously you want to see,
- 6:48and that's really one of the reasons that Georgia State was successful the other
- 6:51night. Yeah, it's interesting because explosive play ratio is one of the key
- 7:00critical variables to victory, and we were plus one in explosive plays. We
- 7:08had six on offense and we only gave up five on defense. The problem
- 7:11is is when they came, and it's a little bit misleading. So you
- 7:15know, we saw the sixty five yard touchdown run, we saw the twenty
- 7:19six yard quarterback run on third and long, the thirty nine yard run up
- 7:24the middle, there's another twenty one yard run, there's one one pass.
- 7:29But on offense, we only had one explosive in the first half. We
- 7:31had one in the third quarter, and the other four all came in the
- 7:34fourth quarter when the game was a little bit different, being played a little
- 7:38bit differently. So even though the statistically we had more big plays in them,
- 7:43their big plays came at cheam moments, and ours came, you know,
- 7:46kind of when the game was in a different, different state of affairs.
- 7:49And so defensively, a couple of things. Number one, the sixty
- 7:55five yard run, we gotta we gotta be disciplined in our gap, better
- 8:00gap control. The twenty six yard run by the quarterback to get him a
- 8:05first down and third and long was squarely on me who called a certain defense
- 8:11and then got stubborn and didn't get out of it when they audibled. The
- 8:16thirty nine yard touchdown was a linebacker not being in the gap that he's supposed
- 8:20to be in. You know, when we we had we had our backups
- 8:22in there trying to get them some work, and a guy didn't get where
- 8:26he was supposed to be. So, as you said, you know,
- 8:30you give up big plays on defense, man, it's it's hard to overcome,
- 8:33especially on the road, and we've got to be better at that,
- 8:35and you know we will be. We were we have been, but we
- 8:39certainly weren't the other night, and that's just not acceptable. Our huskis getting
- 8:43another chance. Againt step by you coming up on Saturday. More on that,
- 8:46we're with Jim Moor. This is the Yukon Football Coaches Show on Learfield
