- 0:01There is a conservative bias in earthly existence that seeks to
- 0:05preserve established ways of life as a means of providing an
- 0:10element of stability. This principle helps to avoid
- 0:15the chaotic implications of unrestricted change, thereby
- 0:19providing a basis and a certain amount of certainty.
- 0:24This conservative bias is enshrined in the functional
- 0:27methodology of each being. As well as in the very formation
- 0:32of physical matter and the relation of the elements of
- 0:35matter to one another at the atomic level.
- 0:40In living beings it is distilled out both as the functional
- 0:44organization of the being, but also in higher level activities
- 0:48governed by instinct and habit. It is enshrined in the laws of
- 0:54motion, such that a body at rest.
- 0:58Tends to stay at rest, and thus an input of energy is required
- 1:03to set anything in motion. Similarly, a body in motion will
- 1:08have a certain momentum and continue that motion until the
- 1:12energy decays or the resistance increases.
- 1:16In a vacuum, such as in outer space where there is virtually
- 1:21no resistance, bodies in motion will tend to stay in motion.
- 1:25Until impacted by an external body which can influence that
- 1:30motion which leads us to the centripetal force drawing the
- 1:34Earth towards the sun and offset by the centrifugal force of the
- 1:39Earth's own motion offsetting that gravitational pull.
- 1:45All of this is intended to set forth the basic conditions under
- 1:49which matter and life operate in our world, and the need
- 1:53therefore. For an extraordinary input of
- 1:56new energy to effectuate real change in the existing order of
- 2:00things, the more complete or radical the change required, up
- 2:05to a complete transformation of the currently dominant mode of
- 2:09existence, the more focused energy must be applied.
- 2:14This is essentially an operation of a conservative principle
- 2:18maintaining a balance of the status quo.
- 2:22And a progressive force which attempts to bring about change,
- 2:26progress, transformation. However it may be viewed or
- 2:31described, we see with the evolution of consciousness that
- 2:36each succeeding principle brings with it new powers that impact
- 2:41the formerly evolved principles, and which operate under
- 2:45different rules of action. This embeds in the manifestation
- 2:50a mechanism. To bring about dramatic change
- 2:54while still ensuring that chaos does not ensue from too fast or
- 2:59too untethered new line of action.
- 3:02At a certain point it becomes obvious that the status quo is
- 3:07actually harmful and needs to be changed.
- 3:10And at this type of inflection point, the powers of change are
- 3:15concentrated and begin to move things in a new direction.
- 3:19Guided by a new principle of understanding and action in the
- 3:24current world situation, we see a status quo that is literally
- 3:28destroying life on the planet Through what scientists are
- 3:32calling the 6th planetary die off of species, we are beset by
- 3:38overuse of resources, excess of waste and pollution, and
- 3:43increasing levels of toxicity in the air, the land and the water.
- 3:49And by an unprecedented human impact on climate change which
- 3:54is having catastrophic effect on all life on the planet.
- 3:58In this circumstance, the conservative principle is acting
- 4:02as an obstruction to the needed change, while at the same time a
- 4:07next principle of consciousness, termed by Sri Aurobindo, the
- 4:12Super mental consciousness. It is bringing with it new
- 4:16powers to move the change process along.
- 4:20It is this power that represents the hope that we can overcome
- 4:24the overwhelming impact of past decisions and actions, the
- 4:29Mother notes quote There is a consciousness in the cells.
- 4:35It is what we call the body consciousness, and it is wholly
- 4:39bound up with the body. This consciousness has much
- 4:43difficulty in changing because it is under the influence of the
- 4:48collective suggestion which is absolutely opposed to the
- 4:52transformation. So one has to struggle with this
- 4:56collective suggestion, not only with the collective suggestion
- 5:01of the present, but with the collective suggestion which
- 5:04belongs to the earth consciousness as a whole, the
- 5:08terrestrial human consciousness. Which goes back to the earliest
- 5:13formation of man that has to be overcome before the cells can be
- 5:19spontaneously aware of the truth of the eternity of matter.
- 5:25Of course, until now those who have achieved this conscious
- 5:29transformation, who are aware of the eternal and infinite life
- 5:33within themselves in the depths of their being, must in order to
- 5:39preserve this consciousness. Constantly refer back to their
- 5:43inner experience, return to their inner contemplation, live
- 5:48in a sort of more or less constant meditation.
- 5:52And when they come out of meditation, their outer nature
- 5:56is pretty much what it was before, and their way of
- 6:00thinking and reacting is not very different unless they give
- 6:04up action altogether, but in that case, the inner
- 6:09realization. This transformation of the
- 6:12consciousness is helpful only for the person who has achieved
- 6:16it, but it does not change the condition of matter or earthly
- 6:21life in the least. For this transformation to
- 6:25succeed, all human beings, even all living beings as well as
- 6:32their material environment, must be transformed.
- 6:35Otherwise things will remain as they are.
- 6:38An individual experience cannot change terrestrial life.
- 6:43This is the essential difference between the old idea of
- 6:46transformation, that is, the becoming conscious with the
- 6:50psychic being and the inner life and transformation as we
- 6:55conceive it and speak of it not only an individual or a group of
- 7:00individuals, or even all individuals but life.
- 7:04The overall consciousness of this more or less developed
- 7:08material life have to be transformed.
- 7:13Without such a transformation, we shall have the same misery,
- 7:18the same calamities and the same atrocities in the world.
- 7:23A few individuals will escape from it by their psychic
- 7:26development, but the general mass will remain the same state
- 7:31of misery. End Quote.
