- 0:00Welcome to frontline static we will get to hear interviews with
- 0:02some of my clients journeys of getting into flight and how they
- 0:05utilize coaching to help them create success of getting hired
- 0:08with less confusion and more ease.
- 0:10Make your dream a reality of getting into flight listen in as
- 0:12you hear some of the stories of the people getting there and
- 0:15come join the flight prep group. Hey you guys welcome to this
- 0:18episode of how to become a flight nurse.
- 0:20This is Take two for me. I started out the podcast and
- 0:24then my the recording that I was doing just automatically stop.
- 0:30So this is going to be even better of an episode for you
- 0:34because this is Take 2. So I wanted to talk to you guys
- 0:37about getting out of Get Energy today and getting back into
- 0:41service and connection while getting into flight.
- 0:44I'm running my current 30 day challenge with people inside the
- 0:47flight Prep Academy. And what we're doing inside this
- 0:4830 day challenge is we are trying to cut their timeline of
- 0:53getting into flight in the next 30 days by asking themselves
- 0:57what's the goal that they want to create in the next 30 days?
- 0:59And how can we do it without hustling, overworking and just
- 1:03really working on building our confidence, mindset and belief
- 1:05in our self. And so people picked various
- 1:08different challenges. One person has picked securing
- 1:11and getting a ride along in the next 30 days.
- 1:14One person has picked being invited to be a part of the
- 1:18monthly educational meetings with the current flight crew,
- 1:22being invited to an interview. So there's different things that
- 1:24they are working on inside the challenge.
- 1:26And what I'm noticing is a lot of people who are wanting to get
- 1:30into flight, they have thoughts of how am IA better, how can I
- 1:34be a better applicant? How can I get notice by flight
- 1:38companies? How can I get myself to be
- 1:43looking better? How can I get flight crews to
- 1:47recognize me? And I'm just calling a lot of
- 1:49this get energy. And so in this podcast episode,
- 1:53I want to give you guys ideas of how you can get back into
- 1:55service and connection while you're trying to go for this big
- 1:58goal. So I wanted to start out by
- 2:00talking to you about when I first started in the ICU and as
- 2:05a new grad, it's really scary you are, especially when you're
- 2:11starting something new. And for those of you guys who
- 2:13work in critical care right now, I know that you can definitely
- 2:16relate to this as a new grad. I was like, I hope I don't mess
- 2:20up. I hope the people like me.
- 2:23I hope the patients like me, I hope their families like me.
- 2:26I hope that I get yelled at by the physicians and the residents
- 2:29or the other people. I hope I don't make a mistake.
- 2:32And you're very much insecure about people liking you and
- 2:37about doing things right. And if you're in that stage, no
- 2:40shame. Like that's, that's exactly
- 2:43where we all start out when we are trying to do something new,
- 2:47especially trying to do something that we've never done
- 2:49before. And I remember rounds, ICU
- 2:53rounds were especially challenging for me as I first
- 2:55started because you had to have really, really good time
- 2:58management. Remember, you get into shift,
- 3:00you look up your patient, you take report, you do your
- 3:03assessment, and then rounds are happening and you have everybody
- 3:06standing in front of you, all the ancillary staff, the
- 3:09residents of physicians, and everybody's asking you
- 3:13questions. And I remember having a really
- 3:14hard time with that. I would turn red, I would
- 3:16stutter. I would just be thinking, how do
- 3:19I just get through this without making the minimal amount of
- 3:21mistakes and without looking dumb.
- 3:24And like I didn't know what I was doing.
- 3:26And I don't know when it was, but I had a mentor at the time.
- 3:33And I remember kind of just like talking to her through some of
- 3:37these emotions and maybe even crying after some of these
- 3:39shifts. And I realized that I really
- 3:46wanted to start to move into connection and really serving my
- 3:53patients and their families. And I started really focusing on
- 3:58this really deeply earlier on in my ICU career.
- 4:02And what I would do for this is how do I, how do I connect with
- 4:08my patient? I would ask myself, like, what,
- 4:10how do I, how can I get into connection with my patient?
- 4:12How can I get into connection with their families on a deeper
- 4:16level? Because here's the thing about
- 4:18nursing, a lot of us, most of us, or I, maybe I'm just
- 4:23speaking for myself. You can't do this job without
- 4:26being a person who like deeply wants to care for people and
- 4:29serve people. And maybe you get into it for
- 4:32the pay, the schedule, any of those things.
- 4:34But you you find out really quickly like that's not going to
- 4:37be enough to keep you in this career.
- 4:41And I think like a lot of us who do nursing and who do who work
- 4:46in healthcare, like we just have a deep desire to serve people in
- 4:51this capacity and to really connect with them.
- 4:54And that's really ultimately why I got into nursing.
- 4:57My twins were in the NICU for 75 days.
- 5:00And I really loved the connection that the nurses made
- 5:03with me to really help me through that hard time.
- 5:06And that's ultimately why I wanted to get into nursing.
- 5:08And so something switched with me earlier on in my critical
- 5:12care career in the ICU where I decided that I was going to come
- 5:17to the shifts and I was going to really focus on connecting with
- 5:20my patient and connecting with their families and connecting
- 5:25with the people that I was working with.
- 5:26And so it started out really small at first.
- 5:29What I did was I would delve into my labs, delve into my
- 5:32patient report, then go in and do a really thorough, really
- 5:36good physical assessment. And I want to tell you guys, in
- 5:39critical care, your physical assessment will never fail you.
- 5:42So take time, do a really good one, even if it's quick.
- 5:45If you're in EMS, do a really good physical assessment.
- 5:48Do not skimp on that because that will never fail you in
- 5:52really thinking about what's going wrong with a patient.
- 5:54What are some changes that you're seeing?
- 5:55So I really focused on in the records looking at and asking
- 6:01during shift change and in the labs and everything that I was
- 6:03looking at and when I did my first physical assessment, what
- 6:07is it that this patient needs from me that day?
- 6:09Like how can I serve them best? Maybe what are questions that
- 6:12haven't been asked? What might I be missing?
- 6:15What might be the staff missing? What can I ask for during rounds
- 6:19that will really serve that patient that day and what can I
- 6:22be looking ahead for? So I really focused on
- 6:25connecting with my patient. And I know that sometimes it's
- 6:27going to be hard to do in ICU because your patients are
- 6:31intubated and sedated. But your physical assessment
- 6:35will clue you in and give you clues about that.
- 6:37And I promise I'm going to, I'm going to get to how this helps
- 6:41you in flight. And so I focused on really
- 6:44connecting with my patient. And then what I also did and
- 6:47what I spent a lot of time with was connecting with the
- 6:52families. And so after I finished doing my
- 6:55morning rounds, we, we, I worked in a unit that was really good
- 6:59about giving us time to do our patient meds, do our assessment.
- 7:04Before this friends and family could come in and visit or call.
- 7:09And so after I did that, then I would really spend time focusing
- 7:13on what the family needed. So as soon as the family called
- 7:15or came in, I would focus on their needs, asking them like,
- 7:19how can I update them? What are some questions you
- 7:22have? What are some ways that I can
- 7:25help you today, whether it's like bringing them a snack or a
- 7:28drink or a warm blanket, I would focus on their needs and then
- 7:32also asking them maybe what questions do you still have?
- 7:36How can I close the gap for you? What can I get for you in
- 7:40information? Maybe it was just like
- 7:43listening, letting them have a good cry, whatever it was.
- 7:46I really focused in on what my patients families really needed
- 7:48as well. And all of this, what I wanted
- 7:53to bring back to you is when I got out of what do I need to get
- 8:00from today? What do I need to stack up in
- 8:04order to make myself look good during rounds?
- 8:06What do I need to do so that my coworkers will think I'm doing a
- 8:11good job, or my manager or the physicians?
- 8:13When I got out of that and I really let myself go into
- 8:17service connection and giving, that's when I feel like things
- 8:23changed for me. That's when I feel like I
- 8:25allowed myself to really be a good critical care nurse.
- 8:29And when I allowed myself to deeply connect with my patients,
- 8:33with their families, that's when I realized that I could get out
- 8:39of this, get energy, and I became a really well-rounded,
- 8:44good critical care nurse. So I wanted to give you guys
- 8:48that example because I know as a lot of you guys are trying to
- 8:52get into flight, you're thinking, what do I need to be
- 8:56doing so that flight companies will think that I'm good at my
- 9:00job. What do I need to be doing to
- 9:01get right alongs? What do I need to be doing to
- 9:05stack up my resume and make myself look better?
- 9:07And I just want to offer you guys to get yourself back into
- 9:12serving and connecting. And when I mean with connecting,
- 9:17tap into how can you start connecting with flight companies
- 9:22so that they can really get to know you and you can get to know
- 9:25them? How can you start like just
- 9:28serving your patients in the capacity that they really get to
- 9:34know you and you get to know them?
- 9:35Because when you practice service, this is how you're
- 9:38going to get into service and connection energy with flight
- 9:41companies. As you're trying to make
- 9:43connections with them and as you're trying to get to know
- 9:45them. The better you can be connected
- 9:47with yourself and the better you know how to drop into service
- 9:51for your patients, the easier this is going to come on your
- 9:54ride along days in your interviews, as you're doing
- 9:57these visits, as you're meeting these flight crews.
- 10:01If you and tap into service and connection, then that's where
- 10:04you want to be tapping into it as you're trying to get into
- 10:06this flight goal. And I want to offer you, you
- 10:09guys all know how to do this, especially if you've been in
- 10:11critical care for a long time like this.
- 10:14Tapping into connecting and serving and giving was life
- 10:18changing for me. This is I think what made me
- 10:22realize what are my strengths as a critical care nurse.
- 10:25And I think one, I'm a really good listener, but I think that
- 10:31what made me a really good flight nurse was the ability to
- 10:34get anytime, anywhere what I needed for my patient and their
- 10:39families. I was willing to wake up the
- 10:41doctor. I was willing to ask the hard
- 10:42questions. I was willing to have the hard
- 10:44conversations. And I think this is what I
- 10:48brought to flight nursing and what I brought to my team is
- 10:52being able to be that person who, when I am in deep service,
- 10:56being willing to ask the hard questions and being willing to
- 11:00say the hard things. And I think that's what I was
- 11:05really good at. I think that's what made me a
- 11:07great flight Nur. So I really think also when you
- 11:09tap into service, you tap into this giving energy, you really
- 11:13learn how to find out what are your strengths, what are the
- 11:18things you're really good at and also find out what your
- 11:20weaknesses are. So I think sometimes this is
- 11:24hard to do, especially when you're stuck in that I hope
- 11:27people like me phase. And so I do want to offer you if
- 11:31you're in this phase of trying to get into flight and really
- 11:34thinking about how do I get this?
- 11:36How do I get people to recognize me?
- 11:37How do I get companies to recognize, recognize me?
- 11:40Sometimes it's easier to drop into trying to connect and serve
- 11:45people when you're when you're doing it for yourself.
- 11:48Like thinking about how do you feel when you go to a shift and
- 11:53no matter what crap hits a fan or no matter what happens,
- 11:57you're freely giving of your time, your service and yourself.
- 12:00And sometimes it's got to start with you.
- 12:02Do it because it makes you feel good and that's OK.
- 12:05Like without judgment on yourself, like I'm freely giving
- 12:08of myself and connecting because it makes me feel good.
- 12:11And I do think when you, when you can start with that, you
- 12:15realize it's, it's the kindness, it's who you are that makes
- 12:18other people feel good, even in the worst moment.
- 12:21So even if you have to tap into doing this for yourself, start
- 12:24with yourself and how this makes you feel.
- 12:28Some good questions to ask yourself if you're trying to get
- 12:31out of this, get energy and get back into service and giving is
- 12:35what kind of person do I like working with?
- 12:39And I know for me, like I really love working with people who are
- 12:43willing to freely give of their time.
- 12:45Like maybe they're because I think of myself, I'm not the
- 12:49smartest, I'm not the strongest, but I I'm willing to give of my
- 12:52time. Like I'm willing to even when
- 12:55I'm busy, if I see someone struggling or they ask me or
- 12:58they have a new admit or they're trying to discharge a patient, I
- 13:01was always a person that was like, Hey, how can I help you?
- 13:03Like of course I need to make sure my patients safe, but hey,
- 13:07how can I help you if they're drowning?
- 13:09Can I bring you a soda? Can I bring you a snack?
- 13:11Can I can I break you for lunch? Like I'm always thinking about
- 13:15that. And I think that's ultimately
- 13:17what made me a good team player too.
- 13:19So maybe start thinking about what kind of person do you like
- 13:22working with and then try to step into being that person.
- 13:27Another question that I want to ask you and that I often times
- 13:31see a lot of people who are trying to get into flight is
- 13:34that we're on the top of our games, OK?
- 13:36Most of you guys have been working critical care for 23510,
- 13:40sometimes 30 years. And you're used to the schedule,
- 13:43you're used to being the top dog, you're used to knowing a
- 13:46lot of things, you're used to being the resource nurse.
- 13:50And so moving into this goal of getting into flight requires you
- 13:54to be a beginner again, requires you to not know exactly where to
- 14:00start. And sometimes I think that
- 14:03especially when we've been doing critical care for a long time,
- 14:06we're placing these leadership roles.
- 14:07We feel entitled. And if this is you, I do not
- 14:11want you guys to have any shame. Just know that this is normal,
- 14:16especially when you've been in the game and you're the person
- 14:19who people are going to. You're the precepting, the new
- 14:22nurses, the new hires, like you're in the game.
- 14:25And I think like, sometimes it's hard to go into flight and be
- 14:29that person that's like reaching out to the crew.
- 14:31They don't know you and being like, hey, you know, I'm
- 14:34Janessa. I really would like to know more
- 14:36about your job. Can I do a ride along?
- 14:38It's hard to not be the big dog anymore.
- 14:40And so sometimes I think these feelings of feeling entitled
- 14:44because we don't know what it feels like to be new again and
- 14:46to ask for things can prevent us from really showing up big.
- 14:50So I want to offer you this question, where am I feeling
- 14:53entitled to not show up big towards this by goal?
- 14:57Where might I be having feelings of I shouldn't have to do this
- 15:02And just ask yourself honestly those questions because showing
- 15:07up big for this light goal is going to require you to feel
- 15:12uncomfortable and to ask the hard questions and to be again,
- 15:17the newbie, the new person. And so I think sometimes that
- 15:21that thought stops people as well.
- 15:24OK, I want to give you guys something right now and a
- 15:33thought that I think sometimes when we're trying to get to our
- 15:37big goals and especially for flight, we feel imposter
- 15:41syndrome. We feel nervous, we feel a ton,
- 15:44a ton of doubt. And we're constantly thinking
- 15:47about how are we feeling? How do we not feel this way?
- 15:52How do we not feel inadequate? How do we not feel alone?
- 15:55Like all of these thoughts as you guys are trying to get into
- 15:58flight or trying to get to big goals, and I want to offer you a
- 16:03different way to think about this.
- 16:04Maybe if you don't resonate with giving and serving in the role
- 16:08as a critical care nurse, I want to give you something that I
- 16:11think is a big kicker to think about.
- 16:14All the fears, all the doubt, all the imposter syndrome, all
- 16:18the nervousness that you are feeling as you are leveling up
- 16:22your patients will feel in that helicopter and all the doubt
- 16:29especially. I'm also talking to new flight
- 16:32nurses and new flight medics. Like everything that you're
- 16:34feeling, I want you to remember that your patient in that
- 16:38helicopter is having the worst day of their life.
- 16:41They are feeling doubt, they are feeling nervous, they are
- 16:45feeling like why is this happening to me?
- 16:47They are feeling alone and they are feeling isolated.
- 16:51And so I don't know if this is helpful for you to think about
- 16:54too. As you're getting this goal, I
- 16:57really want you to start thinking about the flight nurse
- 16:59and how a flight nurse thinks and we can get really caught up
- 17:03in this. Get energy.
- 17:06I'm so scared. I have all this doubt but
- 17:08remember this is how your patient feels too.
- 17:11And give one, give yourself some grace that you're feeling that
- 17:15way. But also it might be helpful to
- 17:17tap into hey if my I know my patient is feeling these
- 17:21emotions, how can I stop thinking about myself and how
- 17:26can I start thinking about them? How can I start caring for them?
- 17:29How can I tap into belief in myself for them?
- 17:33Because everything that you are experiencing as you are getting
- 17:36to this goal, your patience and flight will be experiencing too.
- 17:40So sometimes it might be easier to be thinking of them and their
- 17:45fears and how do you focus on tapping into their needs and
- 17:50serving them and giving them. That's just a different way to
- 17:52look at it as well. I have some questions for you
- 17:56guys that I wanted you to think about.
- 17:58If you are in this get energy. As you're getting the flight to
- 18:01kind of change up and have you start thinking about service and
- 18:05connecting with flight companies and service and connection as
- 18:08you're working towards this goal number one is recognizing what
- 18:11these thoughts are. So what are some get energy
- 18:14thoughts that you are currently experiencing?
- 18:17Some common ones that I hear are what's going to make me look the
- 18:20best? How do I set myself apart from
- 18:24other flight applicants? Another get energy is I
- 18:29shouldn't have to reach out to flight companies 3-4 multiple
- 18:34times to get it right along. They, they, they should just,
- 18:37they should get back to me right away.
- 18:41So you notice when you're in get energy because you feel it
- 18:44because you're like, why am I not getting something out of
- 18:47this? So what are the get energy
- 18:49thoughts that you are experiencing?
- 18:50And again, no shame if you are. I just want to help you guys
- 18:54recognize it so that we can kind of change your train of thought
- 18:58and getting there #2 where do you feel service and connection
- 19:06in your body when you are serving and giving at the
- 19:09highest level? Where do you feel it?
- 19:11All of you guys know this. I know because you've had that
- 19:15patient where you just like gave so much of yourself and you went
- 19:18home and you laid your head on that pillow that night and
- 19:20you're like, man, that felt so good to give today.
- 19:23I feel giving and service in my chest.
- 19:27It's like when my chest and my head and my thoughts connect,
- 19:32you know when you're in get energy for me, I feel it in my
- 19:34head. I'm like just in my head.
- 19:35I'm asking all myself all these questions.
- 19:37It's like I'm not just dropping into my chest, but when I'm in
- 19:40service and connection, I feel it in my chest and my thoughts
- 19:43are connecting to it. So where do you feel service and
- 19:46connection in your body? And when you are serving and
- 19:48giving at the highest level, where do you feel it?
- 19:50For me, I feel it really in my chest.
- 19:53It's like this burning sensation of yes, like it's moving me
- 19:57forward and my thoughts and my head are connecting.
- 20:00The third question is how can you practice getting back into
- 20:04connection and service this week to yourself?
- 20:09And to this flight goal, the key is sometimes it's hard to move
- 20:15into connection and service for other people, or maybe it's easy
- 20:20for you. For me, sometimes the next step
- 20:22for me is how do I just move into connection with myself?
- 20:26And that's as simple as what do I need this week?
- 20:29How have I been so caught up in this goal that maybe I'm not
- 20:32giving back to myself? Where do I need to take a moment
- 20:36away from social media, away from the TV, away from the
- 20:39family, and just be by myself? What is it that I need?
- 20:44Maybe I need some extra sleep this week.
- 20:46Maybe I need to attend to feeling sad or feeling lonely.
- 20:51What do I need? Connect back in service this
- 20:54week with yourself and what does it look like to connect back to
- 20:58this flight goal? How do I reset?
- 21:00How do I move into connection and service as I'm going for
- 21:03flight? How can I really work on
- 21:06connecting with a base manager or connecting with a flight crew
- 21:11or connecting on this base visit because I really want to truly
- 21:17get to know them and truly get to know like what do these
- 21:20companies value? So again, these are the three
- 21:24questions. What are some get energy
- 21:26thoughts you are experiencing? 2 Where do you feel service and
- 21:30connection in your body and when you are serving and giving at
- 21:33the highest level? 3 How can you get back into
- 21:36connection and service this week, both for yourself and
- 21:39towards this flight goal? I want to leave you guys with
- 21:43this example as we're talking about service and connection
- 21:47there. We as a flight crew, you do a
- 21:50lot of community service. I, I don't think I realized this
- 21:53before I get into flight, but got into flight.
- 21:55But you go to a lot of community service events, you go to a lot
- 21:58of speaking events. You fly in to LZ training and
- 22:04training for fire and training for police and training for
- 22:08grammar school age kids and kids, high school age kids.
- 22:10You do a lot of training and community outreach events, which
- 22:15was really fun for me. I really enjoyed that part and
- 22:18you become the person that your community and people are looking
- 22:21up to both on and off the job. So just something to think
- 22:24about. People are constantly watching
- 22:27you and flight companies again, are not looking for time and
- 22:30experience. They're looking for who you are,
- 22:32what you value and the team player you are.
- 22:34And I remember we had got a call, it was kind of later in
- 22:38the night. And we, I, I worked at a base
- 22:42where we had three aircrafts, we had three crews, we had nine
- 22:45people that lived together at one time, which I, I loved that
- 22:47aspect of it. I love the community of that.
- 22:49I loved just being with other teams and other people.
- 22:53And our base manager had called and just said, hey, just wanted
- 22:57to let you know there is going to be someone who works at the
- 23:00company. And they just wanted to stop by
- 23:02and ring their family and some of their kids so that they could
- 23:05see the aircrafts. And I'm like, oh, no problem.
- 23:07Like, yeah, go ahead and come by.
- 23:10So the family came to visit and they, it was a large family.
- 23:15They had some small kids and kids of all ages.
- 23:18We showed them all the aircrafts.
- 23:19It was a lot of fun and not everybody came out.
- 23:24Just a few of us crew members came out and we were just
- 23:26showing them aircrafts and chit chatting with them and they're
- 23:29probably there for a couple hours and then they went home.
- 23:33And a couple weeks later, I can't remember if it was a week
- 23:38or a couple weeks later, like we, I got a phone call from the
- 23:42manager and I can't remember if it was on shift or he called me
- 23:44personally. And they said, Hey, just wanted
- 23:48to let you know that the person who came to visit was someone
- 23:53high up in the company. And they really, really, really
- 23:58appreciated how welcoming you were to their family and to them
- 24:04and just how you made them feel and the kindness that you gave
- 24:09that day. And I remember him saying that
- 24:15he didn't want to tell us who he was because he didn't want us to
- 24:19treat him any differently. And I remember thinking, no one
- 24:24at this base would have acted any differently.
- 24:26We're all like kind people. We all, like, really wanted to
- 24:31just just really be excited and show them our aircraft and, you
- 24:35know, invite them into the base. And I remember thinking like, it
- 24:42matters how you make people feel.
- 24:44It matters how you connect with people both outside of this job
- 24:48and in this job, while you're running a call, while you're not
- 24:51running a call, while people are coming to visit, while you're
- 24:53doing these community outreach events.
- 24:55Like people remember how you make them feel.
- 24:57They remember your character, They remember what you value.
- 25:00They remember who you are. And then I remember meeting this
- 25:05corporate person later on in my career and him just expressing
- 25:10just how thankful he was for how we made him feel that day.
- 25:14And I wanted to leave you that story because as you guys are
- 25:18going for flight, as you guys are sitting in these interviews,
- 25:21as you're making connections, as you are doing these ride alongs,
- 25:25these base visits, as you are trying to get into flight, when
- 25:30you can drop into connection service and how you are making
- 25:34people feel when it just becomes who you are, the person that you
- 25:38are, the way that you give in this industry, flight companies
- 25:42will notice it. And I promise you it will make
- 25:45you feel better as you're getting into flight to come from
- 25:48this energy than get energy. And so I, I hope something in
- 25:54this episode really hit you this week to really dig into
- 25:58connection and service and giving OK again.
- 26:01And and it's OK if you move in and out of get energy, it's
- 26:05fine. But I do want to offer you to
- 26:07tackle this, get energy and to move out of it is to move into
- 26:11service at the highest level. Connect with flight companies,
- 26:15connect with crews, connect with your needs and why you want
- 26:20this. Connect with your why, Connect
- 26:22with your desire. Show them who you are, show them
- 26:25what you value. And, and I promise you, when you
- 26:30do this, your desire to be better, your capacity to serve
- 26:35in this way will grow and you will get into flight because
- 26:40people will see who you are and people will want you to be a
- 26:44part of their team. When you can work on getting
- 26:48back into this energy of service, this is where you will
- 26:55find out what you are made of. This is where you will find out
- 26:59what you are really, really good at.
- 27:01And I know all of you guys as nurses and healthcare workers, I
- 27:05know you guys are all great at this because This is why we do
- 27:08what we do. This is why we've gotten into
- 27:11this industry. This is why we want to help
- 27:13people at the worst day of their lives.
