- 0:01Hello everyone. Wondering, have you ever felt really stuck?
- 0:06Good morning and welcome to Candid Coach Conversations.
- 0:09I'm Kimberly Boyd, founder of Live Life Fully,
- 0:12and today I have with me the spectacular Amanda Kaufman,
- 0:16certified Live Life Fully Coach Hey Amanda!
- 0:18that's gonna stick. You've said it twice now.
- 0:21~ my
- 0:22gosh. I was so excited. Hello,
- 0:24thanks for having me.
- 0:25Yes. So good to see you again.
- 0:27This topic
- 0:29Absolutely.
- 0:30of feeling stuck, like it's come up gosh,
- 0:32it's come up on several calls of mine and and then recently I have literally parts
- 0:38of my life have been stuck
- 0:40And so thinking about this whole notion of feeling stuck and I want to hear from
- 0:46you what to do. Like if people are feeling stuck,
- 0:50what do you think?
- 0:52Well, I think it me I think it deserves some language,
- 0:55yeah.
- 0:55Okay.
- 0:56So so sometimes when we're stuck it's because there are things outside
- 1:00of our control that are happening and they're not happening on the timeline
- 1:03we would prefer.
- 1:05my goodness. yes, a bazillion percent.
- 1:08Yeah.
- 1:08So that's one version of stuck where it's actually somebody else's fault
- 1:11and ~ they would would they kindly hurry up,
- 1:14please, right?
- 1:16So that that's a that's a stuck.
- 1:17Another version of stuck could also be like a not enough.
- 1:20So for example, if you I hear sometimes people in relationships
- 1:24and they're talking about how they feel stuck in their in their relationship,
- 1:28and when we kind of dig a little deeper,
- 1:30like what does stuck actually mean here?
- 1:32Well, he never does XYZ, or you know,
- 1:36I always have to ask again and again to get the littlest thing.
- 1:39And so it's not so much a delay,
- 1:42so much as a low effort from someone.
- 1:45one which again is not matching our preferences.
- 1:48Right? We would strongly prefer that they would make more effort,
- 1:51more commitment, more, more something,
- 1:54right? But
- 1:54Mm-hmm.
- 1:54it's outside of us. So that's one kind of stuck.
- 1:57The other kind of stuck is more of an internal stuck where where I would
- 2:02say a word that probably is more accurate for most would be I'm frustrated.
- 2:10Hmm.
- 2:11And actually it's the same kind of kind of thing.
- 2:13I have an expectation that this
- 2:16Okay.
- 2:17this ability would happen on a timeline or this outcome would happen on a timeline.
- 2:23I have this expectation that things are different than they are,
- 2:29and I am not sure what to do.
- 2:32But I feel frustrated, I feel agitated,
- 2:36I feel maybe deflated or even depressed about that thing,
- 2:41and then what we do is we kind of roll it up into stuck.
- 2:43So either
- 2:44Yep. And I
- 2:46way, it's an expectation that reality is different than it is.
- 2:50Absolutely. I
- 2:51love that you said I feel frustrated or I feel agitated because putting
- 2:57the feeling in there is acknowledging how you feel.
- 3:00It's not putting an identity on you that you're a ball of frustration,
- 3:05but that you
- 3:06Right.
- 3:06feel it. And I think if we just make that the
- 3:09Whatever the word is, the difference between the two,
- 3:12I am and I feel. Saying I feel,
- 3:14frustrated or I feel agitated,
- 3:16it gives us options. It opens up possibilities.
- 3:20Million
- 3:21percent. So often those feelings can be heavy and and hard or difficult to manage.
- 3:27And often we don't have a lot of training or or tool around emotional regulation.
- 3:33because where would you get that?
- 3:34You know, unless you're doing personal growth and development or you've worked with
- 3:37therapists and coaches and things like that to learn those skills.
- 3:40Like
- 3:41the only place you would get it is if you happen to be in exposed to
- 3:46a community of people that already have that on lock.
- 3:48And the thing is in 2026, there's so much stuck happening.
- 3:52and a lot of shall we say like
- 3:55It's a I was gonna say degradation of like language,
- 3:58like we're not using very specific language.
- 4:01I would
- 4:01Mm.
- 4:02say that everything is tweety,
- 4:04you know, it's like this tweetable short text message communication.
- 4:09So instead of saying I feel frustrated,
- 4:11we say I'm stuck shorter, right?
- 4:13Right. Right.
- 4:14Or I I feel bad.
- 4:16You win on minimum number of characters,
- 4:18but we're not really describing our experience.
- 4:23And the capital T truth is when you do describe that experience more fully
- 4:28and you can start to express, I have these feelings,
- 4:31I think these things, and here's the real rub,
- 4:35like this is this is the reason that people benefit so much from
- 4:39a coaching relationship, is
- 4:40Mm-hmm.
- 4:41so often you're not doing what you could.
- 4:45Amen.
- 4:46Right. So
- 4:47Right.
- 4:48the doing is where we make a new choice or decision or we make a commitment over
- 4:55and over and over again in the direction of not stuck.
- 4:59Right? More favorable outcomes.
- 5:02And in my experience, when I'm coaching people,
- 5:04so often the stuck is an it's a a a condition of
- 5:11Feelings that have never been properly expressed to anybody.
- 5:14They're just kind of held in and scrolled through and avoided.
- 5:18Right.
- 5:20and then sometimes we get the language,
- 5:22sometimes we learn the feelings and we learn about limiting beliefs
- 5:26and we learn about these things,
- 5:27but I see a lot of people still get stuck because then they,
- 5:31like you said, they turn it into an identity statement.
- 5:34Yes.
- 5:35Right? Like I I I I am the belief
- 5:38Okay.
- 5:38I am my limiting beliefs or I am I am bad with money or I am this and that.
- 5:43And it's like taking
- 5:46Exactly.
- 5:48the money example, you may not like,
- 5:51you may have an expectation of what's in your bank account and then reality.
- 5:55You're
- 5:56right.
- 5:57And so often we expect that we're earning more money than we actually earn.
- 6:01And we often expect we spent less money than we actually spent.
- 6:04So our expectations
- 6:05Right.
- 6:06are usually like off by 10 or 20%,
- 6:08apparently. And ~ so then that feels stuck,
- 6:12right? And I'm like, you don't feel like you're stuck.
- 6:14You feel like you're losing.
- 6:16Mm.
- 6:18You think you're losing. Because you are.
- 6:21Every time you open up that bank account and you look at the experience of
- 6:25XYZ dollars in there and you have an expectation of what it ought to be
- 6:29and then you you're confronted with the reality of is and it's in that
- 6:34gap that we have an emotional experience and
- 6:37Yes.
- 6:38then we start telling stories.
- 6:39I'm stuck. There's nothing I can do about it.
- 6:41Bah bah blah blah blah. If I'd just done this thing in the past,
- 6:44which didn't do, then things would be different.
- 6:48And those kinds of stories conveniently prevent us from doing something different.
- 6:54Yeah.
- 6:54Yes, because they're
- 6:56just just adding shame and blame.
- 6:58So okay.
- 6:58Right. That's it. Yeah.
- 7:00So when people are feeling stuck,
- 7:03what are three pieces? Maybe one,
- 7:06but three. like little nudges,
- 7:08little nuggets you would give them.
- 7:11Number one, say it out loud. Write it down ideally.
- 7:14And just speak
- 7:15Hmm. Okay.
- 7:17your truth as it is. Don't have judgment for it.
- 7:19Don't worry about how it's going to be perceived.
- 7:21Don't worry if it's using little words,
- 7:23like whatever. Just let it out.
- 7:26Stop avoiding that feeling, right?
- 7:29Confront it. And so say it out loud.
- 7:32Second thing is ask, what would I like instead?
- 7:35So you're identifying the problem of stuck.
- 7:38But have you identified the solution of unstuck?
- 7:42What does that look like for you?
- 7:44How do you know you're no longer stuck?
- 7:46And then
- 7:47Bye.
- 7:47the third big piece is I would say collaborate more
- 7:53and realize you're one of seven billion people on the planet.
- 7:56I am absolutely certain someone has written a book that gives you
- 8:00the exact roadmap of exactly and precisely what to do from where you stand.
- 8:06Right. So you could
- 8:06No.
- 8:06have a book, you could do podcasts,
- 8:08you could do coaching, you could join programs,
- 8:09you could like there's a million things you could do,
- 8:12but first we've got to acknowledge the feeling,
- 8:15and it is valid, and acknowledge what you truly want so that
- 8:20you can pursue something else,
- 8:21and that is the path to unstuck.
- 8:24I love it.
- 8:25Every single time for every single thing.
- 8:27Yeah. Yeah.
- 8:27every single thing. Absolutely.
- 8:30And
- 8:31it's that one step, that one acknowledgement piece of ourselves that's doing
- 8:36it differently and really can shift everything.
- 8:41I think we do struggle with admitting that we are stuck.
- 8:43And and I think we struggle for many different reasons.
- 8:46One was I was talking about like the emotional regulation,
- 8:49not necessarily having
- 8:50Sure.
- 8:50a great tool set there. But I think it's also social.
- 8:53so I think socially speaking, if you let's take the bank account example from
- 8:58earlier, if your friends are all spending willy-nilly,
- 9:01like they're just Scrooge McDuck,
- 9:03and and you look at your bank account and you're just like
- 9:07I I have question marks about how much there's a lot more rent to pay
- 9:10and and and not quite enough rent there,
- 9:12right? Like if you're if you if you've got that kind of a situation,
- 9:16That comparison, that social comparison can be a big issue.
- 9:20But also, like, I think there's a lot of in this Instagram world,
- 9:24a lot of pressure to be super Pollyanaperfect all the time.
- 9:29And that's not real life. That's entertainment.
- 9:32So I think, you know, that permission to humble
- 9:35No.
- 9:36yourself and just sort of realize that even if somebody's spending all willy-nilly,
- 9:39that doesn't mean they have money either.
- 9:41True, don't make the assumption.
- 9:42Doesn't mean anything. And even if they did or
- 9:44they didn't have the money, does that really matter to your financial picture?
- 9:48So it doesn't, right? So perhaps there's things like tracking what you spend,
- 9:53earning different skills, starting that business,
- 9:56doing whatever you need to do to sort out your situation for your goals
- 10:01and your purposes. And like make sure you're hanging out with people
- 10:04who think that's cool.
- 10:07Yes. So like-minded people. I say like-minded people and then I will
- 10:12say I love the like-minded people that I surround myself with.
- 10:16And not only are they like-minded,
- 10:19they push. They push me. They
- 10:22Sometimes they'll ask permission,
- 10:23sometimes they don't. Sometimes I'll ask permission to push and sometimes I don't.
- 10:27I do, I totally agree with you,
- 10:29Amanda. Like it's so important to be aware of who you're surrounding yourself with,
- 10:34especially when you feel stuck.
- 10:36Are they quicksand and pulling into that mud pit or
- 10:40Are they the volcano just spewing you out like go enjoy the world?
- 10:44Enjoy your life. I don't know volcanoes a good animal.
- 10:46Are they building you up, right?
- 10:48Or are they just like, let's bond over our stuckness?
- 10:48Ugh.
- 10:51And it's like, ooh.
- 10:53That is ~ you know, I would say that's like the junk food of relationships
- 10:58is if you're if you're if you're in relationships and friendships where
- 11:01the only thing you can really talk about is to complain.
- 11:04I mean, like that, that's a that's a big red flag.
- 11:07Like, and and I'm not saying you gotta have a red flag over that person.
- 11:09I'm saying you, you. Have a red flag on yourself.
- 11:11Perfect.
- 11:12It's like, hey, if the only way I'm bonding with other people is
- 11:15to gossip and complain, I deserve more nutritious relationships.
- 11:20And I deserve
- 11:21Love it.
- 11:21to give myself that. And by the way,
- 11:23I need to stop feeding into those people.
- 11:26And just stop gossiping, stop complaining,
- 11:29start finding people who are building and and and thinking in that way.
- 11:34Yeah.
- 11:35Yes.
- 11:35Definitely will unstick you.
- 11:38Gosh, Amanda, thank you again for joining us today.
