- 0:00Welcome to the Daily Audio Torah. Today is August 3rd.
- 0:04Now let's continue our journey reading through the entire Bible in
- 0:08one year. This week we are reading from the New Living
- 0:12Translation for the Old Testament and for the New Testament.
- 0:20Deuteronomy 1:16-50.
- 0:25At that time I instructed the judges, you must hear the cases
- 0:28of your fellow Israelites and the foreigners living among you.
- 0:32Be perfectly fair in your decisions and impartial
- 0:36in your judgments. Hear the cases of those who are poor
- 0:40as well as those who are rich. Don't be afraid of anyone's
- 0:44anger, for the decision you make is God's decision.
- 0:48Bring Me any cases that are too difficult for you, and I will handle
- 0:51them. At that time I gave you instructions about
- 0:55everything you were to do. Then,
- 0:59just as the Lord our God commanded us, we left Mount Sinai and
- 1:03traveled through the great and terrifying wilderness, as you yourselves
- 1:08remember, and headed toward the hill country of the Amorites.
- 1:12When we arrived at Kadesh-barnea, I said to
- 1:16you, you have now reached the hill country of the Amorites that the Lord
- 1:20our God is giving you. Look, he has placed the land in front
- 1:24of you. Go and occupy it as the Lord, the God of your ancestors,
- 1:28has promised you. Don't be afraid.
- 1:31Don't be discouraged. But you all came to me and said,
- 1:35First, let's send out scouts to explore the land
- 1:38for us. They will advise us on the best route to take and which
- 1:42towns we should enter.
- 1:46This seemed like a good idea to me, so I chose 12 scouts,
- 1:49one from each of your tribes. They headed for the hill country
- 1:53and came to the Valley of Eshkol and explored it. They picked
- 1:57some of its fruit and brought it back to us. And they reported,
- 2:02The land the Lord our God has given us is indeed a good
- 2:06land. But you rebelled against the command of the Lord your God
- 2:10and refused to go in. You complained in your tents and
- 2:14said, The Lord must hate us. That's why he has brought us here from Egypt.
- 2:18To hand us over to the Amorites to be slaughtered.
- 2:21Where can we go? Our brothers have demoralized us with
- 2:25their report. They tell us, the people of the
- 2:29land are taller and more powerful than we are, and their towns
- 2:33are large with walls rising high into the sky.
- 2:37We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak.
- 2:41But I said to you, don't be shocked afraid of them.
- 2:45The Lord your God is going ahead of you. He will fight for you,
- 2:49just as you saw him do in Egypt. And you saw
- 2:52how the Lord your God cared for you all along the way as you traveled
- 2:56through the wilderness, just as a father cares for his child.
- 3:03Now he has brought you to this place. But even after
- 3:06all he did, you refused to trust the Lord your God who goes before
- 3:10you. Looking for the best places to camp, guiding you with
- 3:14a pillar of fire by night and a pillar of cloud by day. When the
- 3:18Lord heard your complaining, He became very angry.
- 3:22So He solemnly swore, not one of you from
- 3:26this wicked generation will live to see the good land I swore to
- 3:30give your ancestors, except Caleb son of
- 3:34Jephunneh. He will see this land because he has followed the Lord completely.
- 3:39I will give to him and his descendants some of the very land he
- 3:43explored during his scouting mission.
- 3:46And the Lord was also angry with me because of you. He said
- 3:51to me, Moses, not even you will enter the Promised Land.
- 3:55Instead, your assistant Joshua son of Nun will
- 3:59lead the people into the land. Encourage him,
- 4:02for he will lead Israel as they take possession of it.
- 4:06I will give the land to your little ones, your innocent children.
- 4:10You were afraid they would be captured, but they will be the ones who occupy
- 4:14it. As for you, turn around now and go on
- 4:18back through the wilderness toward the Red Sea.
- 4:22Then you confessed, We have sinned against
- 4:25the Lord. We will go into the land and fight for it,
- 4:29as the Lord our God has commanded us. So your
- 4:32men strapped on their weapons, thinking it would be easy to attack the hill country.
- 4:37But the Lord told me to tell you, do not attack,
- 4:40for I am not with you. If you go ahead on
- 4:43your own, you will be crushed by your enemies.
- 4:47This is what I told you, but you would not listen.
- 4:51Instead, you again rebelled against the Lord's command
- 4:55and arrogantly went into the hill country to fight. But the Amorites
- 4:59who lived there came out against you like a swarm of bees. They chased
- 5:03and battered you all the way from the Seir to
- 5:08Hormah. Then you returned and wept before the Lord,
- 5:11but He refused to listen. So you stayed
- 5:15there at Kadesh for a long time. 2 Chronicles 33:14-34,
- 5:2233. It was after this
- 5:26that Manasseh rebuilt the outer wall of the City of David, from west
- 5:30of the Gihon Spring in the Kidron Valley to the Fish Gate,
- 5:34and continuing around the hill of Ophel, where it was built very
- 5:38high. And he stationed his military officers in
- 5:42all of the fortified cities of Judah.
- 5:45Manasseh also removed the foreign gods from the hills and the
- 5:49idol from the Lord's Temple. He tore down all
- 5:52the altars he had built on the hill where the Temple stood,
- 5:56and all the altars that were in Jerusalem. And he dumped them outside
- 6:01the city. Then he restored the altar of
- 6:05the Lord and sacrificed peace offerings and thanksgiving offerings
- 6:09on it. He also encouraged the people of Judah
- 6:13to worship the Lord, the God of Israel. However,
- 6:16the people still sacrificed at the pagan shrines, but only
- 6:20to the Lord their God. The rest of the events of Manasseh's reign,
- 6:24his prayer to God, and the words the seers spoke to him in the name
- 6:28of the Lord, the God of Israel, are recorded in
- 6:31the Book of the Kings of Israel. Manasseh's prayer,
- 6:34the account of the way God answered him, and an account of all his
- 6:38sins and unfaithfulness are recorded in the Record of the Seers.
- 6:43It includes a list of the locations where he built pagan shrines
- 6:47and set up Asherah poles and idols before he repented.
- 6:52When Manasseh died, he was buried at his palace.
- 6:55Then his son Amon became the next king.
- 6:58Amon was 22 years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem
- 7:022 years. He did what was evil in the Lord's
- 7:07sight, just as his father Manasseh had done. He worshiped
- 7:11and sacrificed to all the idols his father had made. But unlike
- 7:16his father, he did not humble himself before the Lord.
- 7:19Instead, Ammon sinned even more.
- 7:22At last, Ammon's own officials plotted against him
- 7:26and assassinated him in his palace. But the people of the
- 7:30land killed all those who had conspired against King Ammon,
- 7:34and they made his son Josiah the next king.
- 7:37Josiah was 8 years old when he became king, and he reigned in
- 7:40Jerusalem 31 years. He did
- 7:44what was pleasing in the Lord's sight and followed
- 7:48the example of his ancestor David. He did not turn aside from
- 7:52doing what was right.
- 7:56During the 8th year of his reign, while he was still young,
- 7:59Josiah began to seek the God of his ancestor David. Then in
- 8:03the 12th year he began to purify Judah and Jerusalem,
- 8:07destroying all the pagan shrines, the Asherah poles,
- 8:11and the carved idols and cast images. He saw to it that
- 8:15the altars for the images of Baal and their incense altars were
- 8:19torn down. He also made sure that the Asherah poles,
- 8:23the carved idols, and the cast images were smashed and
- 8:26scattered over the graves of those who had sacrificed
- 8:30to them. Then he burned the bones of the pagan
- 8:33priests on their own altars, and so he
- 8:37purified Judah and Jerusalem. He did the same thing
- 8:41in the towns of Manasseh, Ephraim, and Simeon,
- 8:44even as far as Naphtali.
- 8:48He destroyed the pagan altars and the Asherah poles, and he crushed the idols
- 8:53into dust He cut down the incense altars throughout the land
- 8:57of Israel and then returned to Jerusalem.
- 9:00In the 18th year of his reign, after he had purified the
- 9:04land and the Temple, Josiah appointed Shaphan son of
- 9:08Azaliah Mesheha the governor of Jerusalem and
- 9:12Joah son of Jehoahaz the royal historian to
- 9:17repair the Temple of the Lord his God. They gave Hilkiah the
- 9:21high priest the money that had been collected by the Levites,
- 9:25who served as gatekeepers at the Temple of God.
- 9:30The gifts were brought by people from Manasseh,
- 9:33Ephraim, and from all the remnant of Israel, as well as from all
- 9:36Judah, Benjamin, and the people of Jerusalem.
- 9:40He entrusted the money to the men assigned to supervise the
- 9:43restoration of the Lord's Temple. Then they paid
- 9:47the workers who did the repairs and renovation. Thus they hired
- 9:51carpenters and masons and purchased cut stone for the walls
- 9:54and timber for the rafters and beams.
- 9:57They restored what earlier kings of Judah had allowed to fall
- 10:01into ruin. The workers served faithfully under
- 10:05the leadership of Jahath and Obadiah, Levites of the
- 10:09Merarite clan, and Zechariah and Meshullam,
- 10:12Levites of the Kohathite clan. Other Levites,
- 10:15all of whom were skilled musicians, were put in charge of
- 10:19the laborers of the various trades. Still others assisted
- 10:23as secretaries, officials, and gatekeepers.
- 10:27As Hilkiah the high priest was recording the money collected
- 10:31at the Lord's Temple, he found the Book of the Law
- 10:35of the Lord as it had been given through Moses.
- 10:40Hilkiah said to Shaphan the court secretary, I have found
- 10:44the Book of the Law in the Lord's Temple.
- 10:47Then Hilkiah gave the scroll to Shaphan.
- 10:51Shaphan took the scroll to the king and reported, Your officials
- 10:55are doing everything they were assigned to do. The money
- 10:58that was collected at the Temple of the Lord has been given to the supervisors
- 11:02and workmen. Shaphan also said to the king,
- 11:06Hilkiah the priest has given me a scroll. So Shaphan
- 11:10read it to the king. When the king heard what
- 11:14was written in the Law, he tore his clothes in despair.
- 11:18Then he gave these orders to Hilkiah, Ahikam son
- 11:22of Shaphan, Acbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the court secretary,
- 11:27and Asaiah the king's personal adviser: Go to the
- 11:30Temple and speak to the Lord for me and for all the remnant of Israel
- 11:34and Judah. Ask him about the words written in this
- 11:38scroll that has been found. The Lord's anger has been poured
- 11:42out against us because our ancestors have not obeyed the
- 11:45Word of the Lord. We have not been doing what this scroll
- 11:49says we must do. So Hilkiah and the
- 11:53other men went to the newer Mishnah section of Jerusalem to
- 11:58consult with the prophet Huldah. She was the wife of Shallum
- 12:02son of Tikvah and grandson of Harhas, the keeper of the
- 12:06Temple wardrobe. She said to them, The Lord, the God of
- 12:11Israel, has spoken! Go and tell the man who sent you,
- 12:15This is what the Lord says: I will certainly
- 12:18destroy this city and its people.
- 12:22All the curses written in the scroll you have read will come true.
- 12:26For the people of Judah have abandoned Me and worshiped
- 12:30pagan gods, and I am very angry with them for everything
- 12:34they have done. My anger will be poured out against this
- 12:38place, and nothing will be able to stop it.
- 12:41But go to the king of Judah who sent you to seek
- 12:45the Lord and tell him, This is what the
- 12:48Lord, the God of Israel, says concerning the message
- 12:52you have just heard: You were sorry and humbled yourself before God
- 12:56when you heard what I said against this city and its people.
- 13:00You humbled yourself and tore your clothing in despair and wept
- 13:05before me in repentance. So I have indeed heard
- 13:09you, says the Lord. I will not send the promised disaster against this
- 13:12city and its people until after you have died and been buried
- 13:17in peace. You will not see the disaster I am going to bring
- 13:21on this place. So they took her message back
- 13:24to the king. Then the king summoned all the leaders
- 13:27of Judah and Jerusalem. And the king went up to
- 13:31the Temple of the Lord with all the people of Judah and Jerusalem,
- 13:35and the priests and the Levites, all the people from the greatest
- 13:39to the least. There the king read to them the
- 13:43entire Book of the Covenant that had been found in the Lord's
- 13:47Temple. The king took his place of authority beside the pillar and
- 13:52renewed the covenant in the Lord's presence. He pledged to
- 13:56obey the Lord by keeping all His commands,
- 13:59regulations, and laws with all his heart and soul.
- 14:03He promised to obey all the terms of the covenant that were
- 14:07written in the scroll. And he required everyone in
- 14:10Jerusalem and the people of Benjamin to make a similar
- 14:14pledge. As the people of Jerusalem did this,
- 14:17they renewed their covenant with God, the God of their ancestors.
- 14:21So Josiah removed all detestable idols
- 14:26from the entire land of Israel and required everyone to
- 14:29worship the Lord their God. And throughout the rest of his lifetime,
- 14:34they did not turn away from the Lord, the God of
- 14:39their ancestors.
- 14:43Romans 16:10-27.
- 14:48Give my greetings to Apellus, a good man whom Christ approves,
- 14:52and give my best regards to the members of the household of Aristobulus.
- 14:57Greet Herodian, my relative. Greet the Christians in the
- 15:01household of Narcissus. Say hello to Tryphema and
- 15:05Tryphosa, the Lord's workers, and to dear Persis,
- 15:08who has worked so hard for the Lord. Greet Rufus,
- 15:12whom the Lord picked out to be his very own. And also his
- 15:16dear mother, who has been a mother to me.
- 15:19And please give my greetings to Asyncritus,
- 15:23Legon, Hermes, Patrobas,
- 15:27Hermes, and the brothers and sisters who are with them.
- 15:31Give my greetings to Philologus, Julia,
- 15:34Nereus, and his sister, and to Olympus and
- 15:37all the other believers who are with them. Greet each other in
- 15:41Christian love. All the churches in Christ send you their
- 15:44greetings. And now I make one more appeal,
- 15:48my dear brothers and sisters: Watch out for people who
- 15:51cause divisions and upset people's faith by
- 15:55teaching things that are contrary to what you have been taught.
- 15:58Stay away from them. Such people are not serving Christ
- 16:02our Lord; they are serving their own personal interests.
- 16:06By smooth talk and glowing words, They deceive
- 16:10innocent people. But everyone knows that you are obedient
- 16:14to the Lord. This makes me very happy.
- 16:17I want you to see clearly what is right and to stay innocent
- 16:21of any wrong. The God of peace will soon crush Satan
- 16:26under your feet. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ
- 16:30be with you. Timothy, my fellow worker, and Lucius,
- 16:33Jason, and Sosipater, my relative, sends you their
- 16:37good wishes. I, Tertius, the one who is writing
- 16:41this letter for Paul, send my greetings too,
- 16:44as a Christian brother. Gaius says hello
- 16:48to you. I am his guest, and the church meets here in his home.
- 16:52Erastus, the city treasurer, sends you his greetings,
- 16:56and so does Quartus, a Christian brother. God is able to
- 17:00make you strong, Just as the Good News says,
- 17:03it is the message about Jesus Christ and his plan for
- 17:08you Gentiles, a plan kept secret from the beginning of
- 17:11time. But now, as the prophets foretold
- 17:15and as the eternal God has commanded, this message
- 17:18is made known to all Gentiles everywhere
- 17:23so that they may— might believe and obey Christ.
- 17:28To God, who alone is wise, be the
- 17:31glory forever through Jesus Christ.
- 17:34Amen.
- 17:39Psalm 26:1-12.
- 17:43Declare me innocent, O Lord, for I have acted with integrity;
- 17:47I have trusted in the Lord without wavering. Put me
- 17:51on trial, Lord, and cross-examine me; Test my motives
- 17:55and affections. For I am constantly aware of Your
- 17:58unfailing love, and I have lived according to Your
- 18:02truth. I do not spend time with liars
- 18:05or go along with hypocrites. I hate the gatherings of
- 18:09those who do evil, and I refuse to join in with the wicked.
- 18:14I wash my hands to declare my innocence.
- 18:17I come to Your altar, O Lord, singing a song of thanksgiving
- 18:22and telling of all Your miracles.
- 18:25I love Your sanctuary, Lord, the place where Your glory shines.
- 18:29Don't let me suffer the fate of sinners. Don't condemn
- 18:33me along with murderers. Their hands are
- 18:37dirty with wicked schemes, and they constantly take bribes.
- 18:41But I am not like that. I do what is right. So in
- 18:44Your mercy, save me. I have taken
- 18:48a stand. And I will publicly praise the Lord.
- 18:54Proverbs 20:19. A gossip
- 18:58tells secrets, so don't hang around with someone who talks too much.
- 19:02Please enjoy this beautiful music, You Belong
- 19:06to the Lord, done by the Project of Love.
- 19:22You belong
- 19:26to the Lord. You belong
- 19:30to the Lord.
- 19:33He found you in a desert land, an empty,
- 19:37howling wasteland. He threw
- 19:41his arms around you, watched over you.
- 19:45You belong to the Lord.
- 19:51You belong to the Lord.
- 19:57He was like an eagle hovering over its
- 20:01nest, overshadowing its young,
- 20:05then spreading its wings,
- 20:09lifting you into the air,
- 20:11teaching you to fly,
- 20:15teaching you to fly.
- 20:22God won't let you.
- 20:26God won't let
- 20:31you. Oh, God won't
- 20:37let you. God won't
- 20:43let you. I found you in a desert land,
- 20:47an empty, howling wasteland. I threw my arms around
- 20:51you and watched over you.
- 20:56You belong
- 20:59to me. You belong
- 21:04to me. I was like an
- 21:07eagle hovering over its
- 21:12nest, overshadowing its young,
- 21:16then spreading its wings, lifting you into
- 21:21the air, teaching you to fly, teaching to
- 21:27fly high. And I alone
- 21:33let you, I alone
- 21:39let you, oh,
- 21:43I alone let you,
- 21:48I alone let
- 21:53you, oh, oh.
- 22:05Do you see it now?
- 22:08Do you see that I'm the one? Do you see it
- 22:13now? Do you see that I'm the one?
- 22:17I'm always around.
- 22:22I'm always around.
- 22:33I have my arms around you and I watch
- 22:39over you. I have my arms around
- 22:42you.
- 22:46I have my arms around you and
- 22:51I watch over you. I'm always around.
- 22:57I'm always around.
