Philosophers often use thought experiments to explore the limits of certain moral theories. In this interview, I turn to the reality of moral dilemmas to make the argument that it exposes some of the necessary limitations of AI ethics and that a proper appreciation of the function of AI will show that it struggles to respond to moral dilemmas in what can be considered an ethical way. If these arguments work, the future of the ethics of AI decision making is not just something that is limited contingently, but that there is a necessary limit to such implementations.
