- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, here he is on the telephone with us. Sean
- 0:02means uh. He's a writer and editor of the Salt
- 0:05Lake Tribune. Sltrib dot com is where you can see
- 0:09his work, and he's also a film critic movie cricket
- 0:13dot net. But Seawan is on the phone because he's
- 0:15he's down there rock climbing and in moad right or dune.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I'm on the road.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Yes, you're dune buggying or something hit. You're hitting the dunes, Sean.
- 0:26I hope you're relaxing. But if you had chance to
- 0:28review a couple of movies.
- 0:30Speaker 2: M hm, Yeah, we have two movies this week. One's good,
- 0:33the other is not. Okay, we we will start with
- 0:37Red One. You've seen you know, you've seen the ads
- 0:41for this and and you probably thought yourself, wow, what
- 0:45is this going to be on Netflix? Yeah, because it
- 0:48looks this looks like it should be in movie on Netflix,
- 0:50you know, like like like Red Notice or one of
- 0:52those things. Right, Yeah, but no, it's in It's in
- 0:55movie theaters. And I have no idea why it is accepted.
- 0:59It costs a lot of money to make it, like
- 1:02they're saying, it's like two hundred and fifty million dollars,
- 1:04a lot of it because of cost overruns, which apparently
- 1:07some of that was because the Rock is always late
- 1:10to set.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Bottles.
- 1:14Speaker 2: There's that. There's that too. Yeah, I'll leave that. I'll
- 1:16leave that to y'all. So, yeah, Christmas time, North Pole,
- 1:19Santa Claus getting ready for the Big Knight, and so
- 1:22are all the people and beings that are around him,
- 1:25including the Rocks character who's the head of security and
- 1:29for Santa Claus. And his character is basically what would
- 1:33Dwayne Johnson look like in Red and Green. Yeah, that's
- 1:36that's That's about as much character development.
- 1:38Speaker 1: That's the depth.
- 1:40Speaker 2: That's that's Yeah. So Santa is played by JK. Simmons, right,
- 1:45and they don't even try to and he's a Sata
- 1:48who works out. He's he's very buff, which should which
- 1:51should be funny. Yeah, yeah, it's it's not whatever. JK.
- 1:57Simmons is a great actor. I really feel sorry for
- 1:59him for being stuck in this thing. So it's two nights,
- 2:03two nights to go before Christmas Eve and there's a
- 2:05security breach and Santa Claus gets kidnapped. Okay, that's that's
- 2:10the gift.
- 2:11Speaker 1: That's all right, now that could be okay, way to
- 2:15have a funny movie.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Yeah, right, And then so Callum has to find Santa now,
- 2:21and so he's forced to get find a tracker who's
- 2:24who's the one who hacked into the top secret computer
- 2:26systems and whatever. Anyway, the guy that helped whoever the
- 2:31bad guy is, and the tracker Jack O'Malley played by
- 2:35Chris Evans. And here the character of the writing assignment
- 2:38seemed to be, what if we took all the bad
- 2:40guys from every Hallmark Christmas movie and put them into
- 2:42one guy? Who do you feel who.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Do you feel worse for him? Or j Simmons?
- 2:50Speaker 2: I based outside the paycheck, I say J K. Simmons
- 2:55because you know, and you know he's a gambler, he's
- 2:57a deadbeat dad. It's all. It's all every bad character trait,
- 3:00you know, call it and he hates and he hates Christmas.
- 3:03So of course, yeah, so they have to team up
- 3:06to find Santa and and find out whoever it is
- 3:09that took him. And this is just dreadful. There's no
- 3:15there's no buddy cop chemistry between these guys. The computer
- 3:18effects are crap, look like garbage. The story is like
- 3:22made out of spare parts, and and and the emotional
- 3:25steaks you're supposed to have of Jack finding his Christmas
- 3:28spare non that it's looks terrible. Yeah. The only funny bet,
- 3:33and it's in the ads is evolves Crampas and the guy,
- 3:37the guy playing Krampas underneath all the makeup is Christopher.
- 3:41You who's uh, the big redhead guy from Game of Thrones.
- 3:45Oh yeah, yeah, okay, so yeah, and he's the only
- 3:49he's the only reason, he's the only half decent thing.
- 3:51And that's just for a minute or two. So one
- 3:54and a half stars.
- 3:56Speaker 1: You're being generous, but there you go. Possibly it's Christmas
- 3:59after so A real.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Pain, A real pain. Yes this This won the Screenwriting
- 4:05Award at Sundance this year for Jesse Eisenberg. Eisenberg wrote it,
- 4:10directed it, and he stars in it. He plays David
- 4:13and Karen Cochlan plays Benji, their cousins who are going
- 4:17on a trip together to Poland to to where to
- 4:22see where their late grandmother lives before she had to
- 4:24flee before World War Two. Grandma never really talked about
- 4:28what happened, and so this is the cousin's chance to
- 4:30dig into their family history. It's not easy because David
- 4:35and Benji are very different. David is very uptight, neurotic,
- 4:39concerned about the schedule for the tour group they're on
- 4:41and everything. And Benji is like his live wire, joking
- 4:46and very you know, grand gestures. He's very manic, and
- 4:49of course you can tell you who is who and yeah,
- 4:54that's very definitely Culchin and of course being Mannix. Somewhere
- 4:57on the trip you can get to see the other
- 4:58side of that, the ession. This is a very sharp,
- 5:02very well observed comedy. There's a lot of humor in here,
- 5:05involving the idea of tragedy tourism, this this sort of
- 5:09tour group, you know, tracing history is connected to the
- 5:12holocausts and whatnot. But the main source of comedy is
- 5:16the nervous interaction between David and Benji. It's also where
- 5:19the tension and the drama really come through. Now we're
- 5:23familiar with Eisenberg playing these neurotic types, and he does
- 5:28very well here. He's great. You really get a sense
- 5:30of the way that David thinks he's carrying in this world.
- 5:33And Kieran Culkin. I mean, if you watch Succession, you
- 5:36already know how good Karen Culson is, but this just
- 5:40solidifies that he's this like jagged wounded heart of this movie,
- 5:44and together they're just amazing. So three and a half
- 5:49stars everywhere. It's in a few theaters. I know it's
- 5:54at the Broadway. I think a few other places. But
- 5:57seek it out. It's worthwhile, excellent.
- 6:00Speaker 1: What now next week? I see we have big week too,
- 6:03Gladiator and Wicked. Have you seen either of those yet?
- 6:07Speaker 2: I'm seeing Gladiator too when I get back. Wicked, I'm
- 6:09gonna miss so no. I know I'll have to catch
- 6:13up with it later. But yeah, yeah, this is this
- 6:15is this is Christmas. This is the Winter's version of Barbenheimer.
- 6:18We got Gladiator too, and we got Wicked, and you
- 6:21got to figure out and we have to figure out
- 6:22a name for this Wicked. I think Glendiator.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, okay, Glicked, I.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Got that's that's the best that coming up.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Glicked. That's clicked?
- 6:34Speaker 2: All right?
- 6:35Speaker 1: All right, Sean means Salt Lake Tribune Movie click at
- 6:38dot net. H safe travels, and we'll see you next week.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Yep, Talculator, all right, thank you? All right? I think
- 6:45Wicked's kind of review proof.
- 6:50Speaker 1: It's gonna yeah, it's gonna be chucking. Although I have
- 6:53I have very good things about it, so
