- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:18Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode number three,
- 0:21Speaker 1: sixties seven and today in the show for our annual
- 0:26Speaker 1: get together on this topic, I am joined by Dan
- 0:29Speaker 1: nine fingers Johnson to discuss our goals, hopes, and hit
- 0:32Speaker 1: lists for the deer hunting season. All right, welcome back
- 0:44Speaker 1: to the Wired Hunt podcast, brought to you by on X. Today,
- 0:48Speaker 1: we are taking a break from the you know, interview
- 0:52Speaker 1: and experts see what they think about stuff too, instead
- 0:56Speaker 1: dive into what we think about stuff that we being
- 1:00Speaker 1: myself and my compadre, Mr Daniel Johnson. Dan, glad you're here.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I like how you said. We're going to take a
- 1:09Speaker 1: break from people who know what they're talking about, and
- 1:13Speaker 1: we're gonna have Dan Johnson on the show, Dan Johnson
- 1:17Speaker 1: and then other bozo and if we're gonna run our
- 1:21Speaker 1: miles and see what happens. Right, how about yourself? I'm good,
- 1:26Speaker 1: I'm getting excited. It's that uh, it's that time of year,
- 1:29Speaker 1: you know, m hm uh speaking of it during that
- 1:34Speaker 1: time of year. It's also that time of year that
- 1:36Speaker 1: we do this episode that we're about to do. Every
- 1:40Speaker 1: year we've been since I think twous fourteen, we've done
- 1:43Speaker 1: this goals, hopes and hit lists conversation each year, and
- 1:47Speaker 1: I like this because I need to go back and
- 1:50Speaker 1: listen to those early ones. Can you imagine what we
- 1:54Speaker 1: must have been talking about in two thousand and fourteen
- 1:57Speaker 1: when we discussed our goals, hopes and hit listening. I
- 1:59Speaker 1: would love to listen to the trajectory over the last
- 2:02Speaker 1: seven years. Um. It would be an interesting time capsule
- 2:06Speaker 1: to go back and examine how far we've come, hopefully, hopefully,
- 2:10Speaker 1: how far we've come. It would be funny if we could,
- 2:13Speaker 1: over that period of time listen to our voices mature,
- 2:18Speaker 1: like going from teenage boys to men. Because I remember
- 2:22Speaker 1: a couple of times in some of the first episodes,
- 2:25Speaker 1: your voice would crack every once in a while. It
- 2:28Speaker 1: was it was yeah, you know, it's hitting puberty there
- 2:32Speaker 1: around round seven. Hey, it took you twenty seven years
- 2:38Speaker 1: to grow? Uh or twenty how ared you now? Two? Okay?
- 2:41Speaker 1: Took you thirty three? Ship Okay, it took you damn
- 2:46Speaker 1: your thirty years to get your goatee where it needed
- 2:48Speaker 1: to be. I still don't even think it's quite Let's
- 2:52Speaker 1: let's be honest about it. I'm just trying to prop
- 2:55Speaker 1: you out, but I do appreciate that I need that
- 2:57Speaker 1: pat in the back every once in a while. Uh. Yeah,
- 3:00Speaker 1: So that's what I want to talk about. I want
- 3:03Speaker 1: to catch up on any projects we've been doing here
- 3:07Speaker 1: over the last month of the summer leading into the
- 3:10Speaker 1: hunting season. Uh, and then go over you know what
- 3:13Speaker 1: our hopes are for this year, our finalized plans for
- 3:16Speaker 1: this year, any specific bucks that the two of us
- 3:19Speaker 1: have on our radar. Um. I've got a lot of
- 3:22Speaker 1: updates since we last talked. I'm sure you probably do too. Um.
- 3:26Speaker 1: So we got a lot to cover, got a lot
- 3:27Speaker 1: of talk about my first hunts in ten I leave
- 3:31Speaker 1: in ten days. And what's that for the Idaho white
- 3:34Speaker 1: tail hunt man? Yeah? Are you ready for it? I
- 3:39Speaker 1: think so? Actually, I feel I feel very ready. Actually, um,
- 3:44Speaker 1: my shooting has been really good. I'm feeling good about
- 3:45Speaker 1: where I am from our troop perspective. Um. I just
- 3:49Speaker 1: got some new arrows though. I decided to switch up
- 3:51Speaker 1: the arrow thing and it got those a little while ago.
- 3:53Speaker 1: And they're like heat seeking missiles. I went with a
- 3:57Speaker 1: really small diameter and a heavy broadhead and uh insert
- 4:03Speaker 1: on the front, so I've got a much higher foc
- 4:06Speaker 1: so front of center, so I think it's front of center.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Um and man, these things are just sinking. It's pretty
- 4:15Speaker 1: it's pretty fun to see. So honestly, I don't know that. Yeah,
- 4:22Speaker 1: I'm not I'm not good enough with numbers and and
- 4:26Speaker 1: the little tiny details to figure all that stuff out myself.
- 4:29Speaker 1: So I've got a guy that I trust who helps
- 4:31Speaker 1: me make sure everything, make sure everything's right from my setup,
- 4:35Speaker 1: and I leaned on him for that. But I switch
- 4:39Speaker 1: to victory arrows. I got some victory that elites, so yeah,
- 4:48Speaker 1: we'll see how that goes. But but yeah, the bow
- 4:50Speaker 1: is ready to rock and roll. I got my gear,
- 4:52Speaker 1: all my other gear, kind of final lines. But I'm
- 4:54Speaker 1: gonna take out there for that trip. I'm just gonna
- 4:56Speaker 1: run the saddle and a new set of sticks, different
- 4:59Speaker 1: set of sticks i've ever used. Um my platform. And
- 5:03Speaker 1: I can tell you all about the scouting I did,
- 5:06Speaker 1: but I scouted out some stuff out there. I feel
- 5:08Speaker 1: good about Idaho. Now, last time we talked, I was
- 5:10Speaker 1: not feeling good. Um, I'm feeling really good now. Um.
- 5:15Speaker 1: So yes, to answer your question, yes, I feel ready. Okay. Question,
- 5:20Speaker 1: is this white tail hunt that you're going on in
- 5:22Speaker 1: Idaho a like in the elevation actually like in the
- 5:27Speaker 1: foothills of the mountains or is it your traditional out
- 5:30Speaker 1: west you know, crop circles, river bottom type. So it's
- 5:36Speaker 1: a little both. Actually I've got three different spots I've
- 5:40Speaker 1: zeroed in on, and two of them are river bottom stuff,
- 5:44Speaker 1: and one of them is like in the foothills. Um,
- 5:47Speaker 1: So it's actually like in you know, you might saw
- 5:51Speaker 1: the pictures I posted of a mountain lion and a
- 5:54Speaker 1: bear on trail camera by one of these spots. That's
- 5:57Speaker 1: the ones that like in the mountains. So there's there's everything.
- 5:59Speaker 1: There's wolves, bears, lions, the whole nine yards cruising through
- 6:03Speaker 1: that spot. Um, and actually some pretty decent bucks. So
- 6:08Speaker 1: that is one location, and then there's two locations in
- 6:11Speaker 1: the river bottom, and I just have the trail camera
- 6:15Speaker 1: pictures as far as intel for the mountain spot the
- 6:18Speaker 1: river bottom spot. I was able to glass some crop
- 6:21Speaker 1: fields adjacent to the public one night and spotted several
- 6:26Speaker 1: nice bucks. Um, probably a couple and like that one
- 6:31Speaker 1: teams one twenties and then one that was definitely like
- 6:33Speaker 1: the one thirties, like a definitely mature buck. And then
- 6:38Speaker 1: I moved to another location and glass from a longer distance,
- 6:42Speaker 1: and you couldn't see these deer as well, but could
- 6:44Speaker 1: see like a huge frame deer. When I say huge,
- 6:47Speaker 1: I mean like a definitely mature I don't know, one
- 6:50Speaker 1: forty plus type buck um, and then several other more
- 6:55Speaker 1: of those type of caliber kind of thing. So long
- 6:59Speaker 1: stories or I mean anything like that would be awesome
- 7:03Speaker 1: for a hunt along those lines public land up there
- 7:05Speaker 1: first time. So I'm feeling good about numbers good similar
- 7:09Speaker 1: to Montana. I feel like lower numbers than I've seen
- 7:13Speaker 1: in those Montana spots. That definitely lower numbers um, but
- 7:18Speaker 1: decent um for the river bottom stuf. At least the
- 7:21Speaker 1: river bottom area seems to be like a little bit
- 7:23Speaker 1: higher numbers the mountain white tail stuff. I think it's
- 7:27Speaker 1: lower numbers UM, and it's gonna be much more difficult,
- 7:30Speaker 1: I think, to patter on those deer because there's no
- 7:32Speaker 1: crop fields, there's no you know, easy food source. It's
- 7:36Speaker 1: like big timber. There's a big there's a creek, and
- 7:39Speaker 1: like a canyon that runs through this chunk of of
- 7:42Speaker 1: woods where I can hunt and or where I'm looking
- 7:45Speaker 1: to hunt. I can hunt a whole lot of area,
- 7:46Speaker 1: but where I found some white tails and they're they're
- 7:49Speaker 1: moving through here for sure, but it's gonna be a
- 7:52Speaker 1: situation where I don't know, they're just feeding on plants
- 7:56Speaker 1: and random leaves and trees and things along the creek,
- 8:00Speaker 1: and then some up on these ridges and these meadows.
- 8:02Speaker 1: You know, there's no lf A field the key in
- 8:04Speaker 1: on Stresa Um, So that'll be different, but kind of cool.
- 8:09Speaker 1: It's it's right, it's you know, it's relatively close to
- 8:12Speaker 1: our place out there, so I can get out there
- 8:14Speaker 1: and check it out quite a bit and excited to
- 8:18Speaker 1: learn that spot. So that's that's what's going on, the
- 8:22Speaker 1: Idaho spot. I mean, what as far as number of
- 8:26Speaker 1: states that you've actually hunted white tails in? Now, what
- 8:29Speaker 1: does Idaho make? Ah? It's a good question. Um, Okay,
- 8:35Speaker 1: I've hunted Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, UH, Minnesota, Uh, Pennsylvania,
- 8:45Speaker 1: North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Nebraska, Iowa. Uh. Uh. I feel
- 8:58Speaker 1: like I'm missing something here, Surrey, did you ever hunt Missouri. No,
- 9:01Speaker 1: I don't think of Hunter, Missouri or did I remember?
- 9:04Speaker 1: I don't think of Hunter Missouri. Um, I'm missing something here,
- 9:08Speaker 1: But twelve twelve states, dude, somewhere good? Yeah? Um so yeah,
- 9:13Speaker 1: a pretty decent swath of Voitel Country. So yeah, man,
- 9:19Speaker 1: I'm excited to get out. There will be new adventure
- 9:22Speaker 1: and I like those things. So absolutely. Now when is
- 9:28Speaker 1: your first trip? I can't remember. I leave the let's
- 9:32Speaker 1: see September twenty nine or thirtieth or something like that
- 9:36Speaker 1: is when I leave my house to drive out to
- 9:39Speaker 1: South Dakota to make it there for the October one opener.
- 9:44Speaker 1: So hold on, that's different. That's different than when we
- 9:47Speaker 1: last talk. So when do you do When do you
- 9:48Speaker 1: push from Michigan to uh, Michigan is gonna be pushed
- 9:52Speaker 1: back to like the seventeenth I think the third weekend
- 9:57Speaker 1: in October. Okay, yeah, it's the It's the only way
- 10:02Speaker 1: I could do it, man. Um. The guy that there
- 10:06Speaker 1: could be a possible change. But the guy that I
- 10:11Speaker 1: am gonna go with he lives in New York, and
- 10:14Speaker 1: New York has some crazy strict rules about leaving the
- 10:18Speaker 1: state and then coming back for it. So if he
- 10:23Speaker 1: leaves and then comes back and gets checked, then he
- 10:29Speaker 1: may have to quarantine for fourteen more days, using fourteen
- 10:32Speaker 1: more days a p t O. And you know what
- 10:36Speaker 1: I mean, Like, no one wants to do that. Yeah,
- 10:39Speaker 1: that's that's so we're we're gonna, you know, we're gonna
- 10:44Speaker 1: play it by ear. We're gonna see what happens, basically,
- 10:46Speaker 1: shoot from the hip. If things change and I go
- 10:49Speaker 1: to South Dakota by myself, I'll probably come to Michigan
- 10:54Speaker 1: for the opener or like the third, fourth, and fifth
- 10:58Speaker 1: or something like that, and then come back for a
- 11:01Speaker 1: couple of days and then go to South Dakota. So
- 11:06Speaker 1: it's honestly, it's still up in the air. Really well,
- 11:10Speaker 1: I've got that first week planning on being around for you,
- 11:14Speaker 1: but I will be gone for Chunk in mid October,
- 11:19Speaker 1: but we'll hopefully we'll be back by the seventeen or
- 11:22Speaker 1: eighteenth or somewhere in that ballpark. Your wife's gonna be home.
- 11:34Speaker 1: That came out, but it came out kind of right
- 11:37Speaker 1: to wow. Man, Yes, make sure that if I'm gonna
- 11:44Speaker 1: trespass on your property, there's no one going to be
- 11:46Speaker 1: at the house. You got cell cams too, right, I
- 11:50Speaker 1: got cell cams. I've got people that are gonna be
- 11:53Speaker 1: watching the house. People will watch all my hunting spots.
- 11:55Speaker 1: There's no way that you're gonna be slipping in there
- 11:57Speaker 1: and killing trans like one of your buddies if I
- 12:01Speaker 1: just go. Yeah, Mark wanted me to come out here
- 12:03Speaker 1: and check out the property for a couple of days. Uh,
- 12:06Speaker 1: Like I got it covered. They would they call you.
- 12:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'm gonna have further on Dan patrol. But
- 12:14Speaker 1: speaking of that, you know, we haven't actually talked about
- 12:16Speaker 1: Trand on the Wired Hunt podcast yet. We talked about
- 12:20Speaker 1: on your podcast a week or two ago, but probably
- 12:25Speaker 1: people know from social media or listening to your show.
- 12:27Speaker 1: But Tran, that buck that I was after all last year,
- 12:31Speaker 1: he's back. He made it and I've seen him a
- 12:34Speaker 1: bunch now. Um yeah, he the first week that I
- 12:40Speaker 1: got back, first week of August that I got back
- 12:43Speaker 1: from Idaho. Um, I was able to get out in Glass.
- 12:45Speaker 1: They're a bunch and he showed up like four times
- 12:49Speaker 1: over like an eight day period at night to feed.
- 12:53Speaker 1: And then he disappeared for a while because I had
- 12:56Speaker 1: to go back on that property and I had to
- 12:58Speaker 1: do a bunch of food plot prep, and I hung
- 13:00Speaker 1: trail cameras and just got all my stuff done. And
- 13:03Speaker 1: then he disappeared for a while. But then he has
- 13:05Speaker 1: showed up the last two nights, back in daylight, feeding
- 13:10Speaker 1: out in this bean field. Um, so he's he's not
- 13:14Speaker 1: you know, when we did that prediction, we're trying to
- 13:16Speaker 1: predict what he would look like. Yeah, he's not quite that,
- 13:20Speaker 1: but a little bit like when we were talking, I
- 13:23Speaker 1: said that he had a little sticker off one of
- 13:25Speaker 1: his bases last year, and I was guessing this year
- 13:27Speaker 1: he would have two big ones. That was true. He's
- 13:30Speaker 1: got he's got a sticker off each base and they're
- 13:32Speaker 1: probably an inch to an inch and a half long.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Maybe those are pretty cool. And then otherwise he's just
- 13:37Speaker 1: like a big main frame eight pointer. Hard to tell
- 13:41Speaker 1: exactly how long those times are, but they're long. Um.
- 13:44Speaker 1: I mean you saw the picture, just a big framed
- 13:46Speaker 1: eight and uh, just a cool just a cool buck.
- 13:51Speaker 1: So it's a it's game on, yeah man, And he's
- 13:55Speaker 1: a main mainframe eight yeah eight, And then those sticker
- 13:59Speaker 1: points the base base. Yeah, yeah, he's a beautiful, absolutely
- 14:03Speaker 1: beautiful black man. Um. I like eight pointers so you
- 14:07Speaker 1: should shoot him. I'm I'm gonna do my damnest. He's
- 14:10Speaker 1: on your property every day. I mean, I don't know
- 14:14Speaker 1: about that, UM, but he's he's somewhere pretty close at least.
- 14:19Speaker 1: I mean, if if I look historically, he was always frequent,
- 14:25Speaker 1: he was frequenting it, I believe that he lives. If
- 14:28Speaker 1: I had a guess, like based off of my scouting,
- 14:30Speaker 1: based off a trail camera data, based on the last
- 14:33Speaker 1: two and a half years of observation, I think there
- 14:36Speaker 1: are two potential zones, two to three potential zones that
- 14:41Speaker 1: I feel pretty confident he's betting in. And one of
- 14:44Speaker 1: them is that on neighbor's property, and one of them
- 14:46Speaker 1: is on the property I hunt, um, and and it's
- 14:50Speaker 1: close to the edge both of them, so I you know,
- 14:54Speaker 1: I know where his home zone is for most of
- 14:56Speaker 1: the time. I've got a lot of data work off
- 14:58Speaker 1: of as far as past year history, UM, and now
- 15:02Speaker 1: just a matter of making it happen. I made a
- 15:04Speaker 1: bunch of not a bunch of I made some changes
- 15:06Speaker 1: to the to the farm to specifically try to set
- 15:09Speaker 1: myself up for a better chance to get a shot
- 15:11Speaker 1: at him, UM, which I mean, we can just get
- 15:15Speaker 1: into it. Guess since we're talking about it, um So,
- 15:19Speaker 1: this is that same property you know where the Holy
- 15:22Speaker 1: Field saga happened, where you know, I would see that
- 15:25Speaker 1: deer all the time in some neighboring cover, but I
- 15:28Speaker 1: couldn't hunt it. Um So, I have just like a
- 15:32Speaker 1: lot of edge and farmland and then a couple of
- 15:35Speaker 1: little grassy areas that I've been able to convert to
- 15:37Speaker 1: food plots. So in the past, you know, one of
- 15:40Speaker 1: the big changes on this property was when I converted
- 15:44Speaker 1: this old grassy field into a food plot system. Um
- 15:48Speaker 1: That was probably seven years ago. I did that and
- 15:50Speaker 1: that started getting some of these deer that hung out
- 15:53Speaker 1: on the neighbors to come over to my side, and
- 15:55Speaker 1: I started, you know, I've killed a few bucks in
- 15:57Speaker 1: this food plot system. That's where I killed Frank, that
- 15:59Speaker 1: really big one a few years ago. I killed about
- 16:02Speaker 1: an Opening day out here. I've killed a lot of doughs.
- 16:04Speaker 1: It has become like a really good spot that in
- 16:06Speaker 1: the past didn't do anything for me. But I have
- 16:09Speaker 1: found that while I have I had a few encounters
- 16:13Speaker 1: and usually like opening day, the first couple of days
- 16:15Speaker 1: this season, you'll get a big boy in there. Um.
- 16:18Speaker 1: The big ones, the mature bucks, more often than not
- 16:21Speaker 1: don't end up coming out there, um, or if they do,
- 16:24Speaker 1: it's quick or it's not of range. And I was
- 16:27Speaker 1: just trying to sit and think, you know, what can
- 16:28Speaker 1: I do to just make this a little bit more
- 16:30Speaker 1: enticing or a little bit better so that if a
- 16:33Speaker 1: deer does come through here and I'm hunting it, I
- 16:35Speaker 1: guaranteed to get that shot. UM. So I made two changes. Um.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Number one, this whole little system of food plots. It's
- 16:45Speaker 1: only about a two acre area, so it's relatively small,
- 16:51Speaker 1: but it's a circle on one side by this food
- 16:54Speaker 1: plot screen of sorghum and Egyptian weight that I plan
- 16:56Speaker 1: every year. So I've got that. But what I used
- 16:59Speaker 1: to do was just kind of plant that whole area
- 17:01Speaker 1: into food plots. UM. And now each year since I've
- 17:06Speaker 1: started adding more and more cover on the inside to
- 17:09Speaker 1: try to make its small, smaller openings so deer will
- 17:14Speaker 1: feel more comfortable coming out there in daylight. I don't
- 17:16Speaker 1: want them to have to feel like they're going from
- 17:18Speaker 1: this really great thick, brushy cover into a wide open
- 17:21Speaker 1: field and and not feel comfortable doing that. So I've
- 17:25Speaker 1: continued to let more and more cover girl back in
- 17:28Speaker 1: this chunk and then create kind of narrower, strategically designed
- 17:33Speaker 1: food plots. So I went from this food plot, I
- 17:36Speaker 1: could sit in my tree stand and it would be
- 17:38Speaker 1: sixty yards to the edge of it, and I would
- 17:40Speaker 1: see lots of bucks would walk that edge and they'd
- 17:42Speaker 1: be out of range. I shifted the plot design this
- 17:45Speaker 1: year too, make sure the farthest range from me would
- 17:49Speaker 1: be forty yards away, So I moved that outside edge
- 17:51Speaker 1: in closer, so if they come out into that area,
- 17:53Speaker 1: they've got to be within range. I've added a couple
- 17:58Speaker 1: of cover corridors, so basically I've broken up the food
- 18:01Speaker 1: plot into almost a four leaf clover with big chunk
- 18:08Speaker 1: of grass and brush that I've left in between each
- 18:11Speaker 1: one of those leaves of the clover. So now instead
- 18:13Speaker 1: of it seemed like a two acre field, it seems
- 18:16Speaker 1: like four you know, quarters to third acre, little curvy
- 18:21Speaker 1: winding openings. Um. So again, hoping this is like almost
- 18:26Speaker 1: like a maze that deer come into and they feel
- 18:29Speaker 1: they're never feeling like they're very far from cover. They
- 18:31Speaker 1: can't see very far, so they need to move through
- 18:33Speaker 1: it to look for other deer. Imagine a buck coming
- 18:36Speaker 1: through here instead of you know, walking down wind or
- 18:39Speaker 1: stepping into it and just looking at the whole field.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Now he's got to move around. Um. So I did that.
- 18:45Speaker 1: And the second thing I did was I took Steve
- 18:48Speaker 1: Vartilla's advice he gave me a few weeks ago and
- 18:52Speaker 1: added a bunch of licking branches into the food plus system.
- 18:58Speaker 1: So in the past, I know you've heard me talk
- 19:01Speaker 1: about these like fake scrape trees that I put. I'll
- 19:03Speaker 1: put one of these things right in the middle of
- 19:05Speaker 1: the food plot, and they used to do just one
- 19:08Speaker 1: per field. I put four in this one. So the
- 19:12Speaker 1: idea of being this is like a communication hub on steroids.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Now all kind of in a small area. So it's
- 19:18Speaker 1: gonna be a lot of sign a lot of you know,
- 19:21Speaker 1: information being passed along here. So I'm just hoping between
- 19:25Speaker 1: all that it's it's more conducive to daylight movement. Hopefully
- 19:28Speaker 1: there's gonna be a bunch of scraping activity. It's gonna
- 19:31Speaker 1: be great food. I planned these food plots oh ten
- 19:34Speaker 1: days ago or a week ago, and I just checked
- 19:36Speaker 1: in the germinating and coming up nice. Um, it's I
- 19:41Speaker 1: don't know. I'm hoping it's going to be a little
- 19:45Speaker 1: bit more. I mean it's always worked pretty well, but
- 19:47Speaker 1: I think it's gonna be a little bit better. I'm
- 19:48Speaker 1: trying to get that one or two percent edge you
- 19:50Speaker 1: know that maybe gives me the shot at Tran or
- 19:53Speaker 1: at whoever. And it's a spot that I'm not gonna
- 19:55Speaker 1: hunt a ton. You know, it's gonna be like an
- 19:57Speaker 1: opening night hunt maybe you know an e name during
- 20:00Speaker 1: the rut or late October when they're coming out to
- 20:02Speaker 1: feed in the evenings. Um. But it's it's a spot
- 20:06Speaker 1: that's pretty central, at least from a scouting perspective too,
- 20:09Speaker 1: because I can glass this area from afar Um. This
- 20:13Speaker 1: is the place that if you remember last year, I
- 20:15Speaker 1: didn't hunt Opening night because it was bad weather. So
- 20:18Speaker 1: I thought I'll sit in the hill and watch it
- 20:20Speaker 1: and then the next day when the cold front hits,
- 20:22Speaker 1: I'll hunt it. And I watched it opening night and
- 20:25Speaker 1: watched Tran walk right by my tree. Uh So so yeah,
- 20:30Speaker 1: I'm not going to make that same mistake this year, hopefully. UM.
- 20:34Speaker 1: I got a question, Yeah, I know, was it this
- 20:37Speaker 1: spring or early this summer? The power line Company came
- 20:41Speaker 1: through and was doing some work in the area. Did
- 20:45Speaker 1: that affect you or is that going to affect you
- 20:48Speaker 1: at all? So I wasn't sure how it would affect me.
- 20:51Speaker 1: But they finished up in June. Um So it kept
- 20:55Speaker 1: me from like being able to do any maintenance work
- 20:57Speaker 1: on the plots because actually, like they were doing work
- 21:00Speaker 1: basically in my plot areas because I can use that
- 21:03Speaker 1: power line for for food plat stuff. Um, So I
- 21:06Speaker 1: couldn't do any spring prep. I just came in late
- 21:09Speaker 1: this summer and they were gone by then, and they
- 21:11Speaker 1: had moved out there big. They especially laid a wooden
- 21:15Speaker 1: pallette road across the whole power line, and that kind
- 21:20Speaker 1: of messed up the soil. Is huge ruts through the
- 21:22Speaker 1: food plots and a bunch of weird kind of holes now,
- 21:25Speaker 1: But other than that, it hasn't impacted me at all.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Um And And honestly, by having that road there and
- 21:33Speaker 1: then taking it out, they killed a bunch of stuff.
- 21:36Speaker 1: And then when they removed that road, it allowed new
- 21:40Speaker 1: stuff to grow up. So a bunch of new plants
- 21:42Speaker 1: grew up where they used to be just grassed. Now
- 21:44Speaker 1: there's a bunch of milkweed and different things. Like that.
- 21:47Speaker 1: So that's kind of cool. Um, so ended up not
- 21:50Speaker 1: being a big deal. Now, if they come in and
- 21:52Speaker 1: do more maintenance work in season, like cutting trees or something,
- 21:56Speaker 1: then that will really throw off my whole game plan.
- 21:58Speaker 1: But um, as of now, fingers crossed, it's it's gonna
- 22:02Speaker 1: be okay, got you okay? Um? Yeah, so that's where
- 22:07Speaker 1: trans gonna be. Uh there's another pretty nice nine point
- 22:12Speaker 1: I've been seeing there. Um. I'm guessing he's probably just
- 22:15Speaker 1: three though, so I think he'll be a pass um.
- 22:18Speaker 1: But if it gets closer hunting season and he just
- 22:20Speaker 1: looks like a tank and appears more mature than I
- 22:23Speaker 1: think right now, then you know, if if train disappeared,
- 22:26Speaker 1: maybe I'd take a crack at him. Ah. There was
- 22:29Speaker 1: that last year in late November, a new buck showed up.
- 22:34Speaker 1: I was calling the brow list eight just like a
- 22:35Speaker 1: big eight porn. His brows busted off. He was mature
- 22:39Speaker 1: last year. So if he shows up in season again,
- 22:42Speaker 1: he'd be a buck on that farm might be after two.
- 22:44Speaker 1: So if we're talking hit list, I guess on that farm,
- 22:48Speaker 1: Tran is number one. I have everything, and then that
- 22:51Speaker 1: browless eight would be number two. If he comes back. Um,
- 22:55Speaker 1: and then I don't know about that nine pointer. Um,
- 22:58Speaker 1: A bunch of good young bucks too that I've been
- 22:59Speaker 1: seeing that hopefully we'll stick around for future years. So
- 23:02Speaker 1: stuff looks uff, stuff looks pretty good there. We'll see
- 23:05Speaker 1: how it goes. Um, what does your gut tell you
- 23:09Speaker 1: about tray? And you think you're gonna have an encounter
- 23:11Speaker 1: with him where you're gonna be able to shoot him?
- 23:13Speaker 1: I think so, yeah, I think, Um, you know, unless
- 23:16Speaker 1: he gets killed by someone else, if that's the big
- 23:19Speaker 1: trump card, I don't know. But if someone else doesn't
- 23:22Speaker 1: kill him, I feel very good about my chances. I
- 23:24Speaker 1: know the buck, I know where he's at. I'm I've
- 23:27Speaker 1: you know, fine tuned a lot of stuff and move
- 23:30Speaker 1: sets and prep trees for saddle hunts deeper and deeper
- 23:32Speaker 1: into the cover. Um where I think, you know, I'll
- 23:37Speaker 1: get I'll get my potential opportunities. You never know. But um,
- 23:43Speaker 1: he's he's a homebody, he'll be around. So historically I'm
- 23:48Speaker 1: talking not about train but in dear movement in general.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Has the dear movement on the farm that you hunt
- 23:57Speaker 1: stayed the same or has it changed over the years? Um, well,
- 24:05Speaker 1: I think that in general, there are some basic trends
- 24:08Speaker 1: that have stayed pretty consistent. UM. Although like one thing
- 24:12Speaker 1: would be, you know, when I added that food plus system,
- 24:15Speaker 1: that added a whole new area that deer started using
- 24:18Speaker 1: a ton Like that's now like one of the main
- 24:20Speaker 1: hotspots on the farm that in the past never was,
- 24:22Speaker 1: So that is a change. UM. Otherwise, it's it's a
- 24:27Speaker 1: pretty simple There's there's lots of good betting on some
- 24:30Speaker 1: neighboring properties, a little bit on mine, and then all
- 24:33Speaker 1: the crop fields are kind of on mine, and so
- 24:35Speaker 1: you've got deer moving off of the neighbor's betting coming
- 24:39Speaker 1: out to these fields where I can hunt, and I
- 24:41Speaker 1: can hunt around the edges, and and that's always the same. UM.
- 24:45Speaker 1: I've just have changed how I hunt a lot. I
- 24:48Speaker 1: used to hunt just the edges. Now I hunt some
- 24:51Speaker 1: of the edges still on occasion, but I've been every
- 24:53Speaker 1: year I've kind of pushed further and further back UM,
- 24:56Speaker 1: And I'm going to continue to do that, and I
- 24:58Speaker 1: think be more aggressive this year than ever. So, so
- 25:02Speaker 1: I see different movement because of that. UM. As far
- 25:05Speaker 1: as like deer activity, there's always like a lot of
- 25:08Speaker 1: great activity early in the season, um, and then you know,
- 25:11Speaker 1: I hunt a few times early in the year. Usually
- 25:15Speaker 1: mature buck sightings dropt down again through mid October, at
- 25:18Speaker 1: least out in the spots that I can see easily.
- 25:21Speaker 1: I'm sure they're doing stuff back on the cover. Um.
- 25:24Speaker 1: But then historically, right around that last week of October,
- 25:29Speaker 1: it just seems like there's always a dough that comes
- 25:31Speaker 1: in early or something gets them going, and it just
- 25:34Speaker 1: seems like this farm is a little bit better earlier
- 25:37Speaker 1: than other places. So I like to make sure I'm
- 25:39Speaker 1: hunting there that last week of October um, because that
- 25:42Speaker 1: just seems to be when it when it gets exciting.
- 25:45Speaker 1: So it goes through November, and then gun season hits
- 25:48Speaker 1: and everything shuts down, and then usually late season picks
- 25:51Speaker 1: up again once the pressure settles down a little bit.
- 25:54Speaker 1: So that's the typical pattern I see. You know, sometimes
- 26:00Speaker 1: your gut can tell you a lot man and uh,
- 26:02Speaker 1: I think you I mean, you've been hunting this farm
- 26:03Speaker 1: for how many years now? Oh um, this might be
- 26:09Speaker 1: my tenth year, nine years, ten years, something like that,
- 26:11Speaker 1: So you got it. I mean, for the most part,
- 26:13Speaker 1: I would say, you've gotta figure it out. I know
- 26:16Speaker 1: the basics at least now it's just like trying to
- 26:18Speaker 1: figure out what each individual buck does, but I definitely
- 26:21Speaker 1: know the basics. Um, But it's it's it's I like
- 26:26Speaker 1: to bounce around a lot of different states, and I
- 26:28Speaker 1: like that new adventure. But for some reason, this place
- 26:30Speaker 1: continues to be a fun challenge because I'm I'm still
- 26:34Speaker 1: finding ways to tweak or I'm still doing different things
- 26:36Speaker 1: and I'm still trying new things. It's it's remained interesting
- 26:39Speaker 1: for me, which is which has been cool. And I
- 26:41Speaker 1: think a big part of that has been I've been
- 26:43Speaker 1: lucky to have bucks make it year after years, so
- 26:46Speaker 1: I get to, you know, learn a specific buck and
- 26:49Speaker 1: and that just as you know, gets me excited. Yeah.
- 26:53Speaker 1: And let's see, I'm thinking about the main farm that
- 26:56Speaker 1: I hunt. This will be season. I've hunted it and
- 27:01Speaker 1: I've gotten somewhat of it figured out, but it just
- 27:06Speaker 1: becomes just like any farm. Really, you can have it
- 27:09Speaker 1: figured out, but it's a matter of that deer has
- 27:14Speaker 1: to walk by your stand while you're in it all
- 27:17Speaker 1: at one time. Yeah. Always easier said than done, right, absolutely,
- 27:21Speaker 1: So So let's talk about that farm then a little bit.
- 27:24Speaker 1: What's uh, anything new that you've scouted out there, figure
- 27:28Speaker 1: it out, or basically going in with your mobile hunting
- 27:33Speaker 1: strategy as usual and uh just gonna pick it up
- 27:36Speaker 1: once the season starts. Yeah, I mean that's typically what
- 27:39Speaker 1: I do anyway. Um Man, as far as prepping for
- 27:43Speaker 1: the season, I just feel I'm way behind. I've only
- 27:46Speaker 1: checked trail cameras one time this entire summer so far.
- 27:50Speaker 1: I'm gonna try to sneak out today and maybe take
- 27:54Speaker 1: my boy with me and go do it. I got
- 27:56Speaker 1: a wedding down there anyway, so I'm gonna try to,
- 28:00Speaker 1: I don't know, try to get out and maybe at
- 28:05Speaker 1: least check them. But the shift, you know, the the
- 28:09Speaker 1: trail camera shift that we always talk about, I don't
- 28:11Speaker 1: think I'm gonna be able to get to it until
- 28:13Speaker 1: closer to October now, just because of the schedule. Um
- 28:18Speaker 1: with work and that storm that came through eastern Iowa,
- 28:23Speaker 1: we're just way behind. I'm I'm just way behind on work.
- 28:26Speaker 1: So it's hard to say, Okay, I'm gonna go out
- 28:30Speaker 1: and check trail cameras or I'm gonna spend a day
- 28:31Speaker 1: to go do this when I know I got a
- 28:33Speaker 1: ship tonnel work to do at home and and catch,
- 28:37Speaker 1: you know, catch everything up. But other than that, man,
- 28:40Speaker 1: it's just I'm behind shooting my bow, I'm behind with work,
- 28:45Speaker 1: I'm behind, you know, I'm just I don't know that's that.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Those are all excuses, by the way, which nobody wants
- 28:51Speaker 1: to hear excuses, But that's a fact. I'm just I'm
- 28:53Speaker 1: a little behind. But as far as that farm is concerned,
- 28:57Speaker 1: I'm gonna try to get some trail camera out in
- 29:00Speaker 1: some in some places to start catching. But the good
- 29:04Speaker 1: thing is is I know where the good funnels are,
- 29:09Speaker 1: I know where the pinch points are, I know where
- 29:13Speaker 1: the the deer movement is for the most part, and
- 29:17Speaker 1: knowing that allows me to almost it allows me to
- 29:21Speaker 1: be unprepared from what I'm normally doing because the way
- 29:25Speaker 1: I hunt, I could just get caught up real quick. Right,
- 29:28Speaker 1: throw some trail cameras out on a couple of days,
- 29:31Speaker 1: go check those trail cameras. Come late October early November,
- 29:35Speaker 1: when I make the decision to start hunting, and then
- 29:39Speaker 1: just start that that rotation, right, find the deer on
- 29:43Speaker 1: trail camera, move in and make those minor adjustments until
- 29:48Speaker 1: you connect with one. Did you get to listen to
- 29:51Speaker 1: that whole conversation here with Andre the other day. Yeah, yeah,
- 29:54Speaker 1: I did, and I get well, not the whole. I
- 29:57Speaker 1: don't know if I listened to the last fifteen minutes
- 29:59Speaker 1: of it, but I tried. So I'm curious, based off
- 30:02Speaker 1: of the stuff he was talking about, do you see
- 30:05Speaker 1: any of his you know, he's got kind of a
- 30:07Speaker 1: similar approach to you, except for instead of trail cameras,
- 30:10Speaker 1: you know, he's using just sign he sees in the
- 30:12Speaker 1: ground and moving based off that. Do you foresee adjusting
- 30:17Speaker 1: anything basiness on the things he was saying, Is that
- 30:19Speaker 1: anything that might influence what you do there? There's one
- 30:22Speaker 1: thing that he said that I kind of like, and
- 30:26Speaker 1: that is you'll never spook a deer out of his
- 30:30Speaker 1: core area. He'll he'll run away and then he'll come back,
- 30:35Speaker 1: or he'll go hide somewhere, or he'll back Doria, or
- 30:39Speaker 1: maybe just you know, go not turnal for a couple
- 30:43Speaker 1: of days. But he's not going to just leave and
- 30:45Speaker 1: go five miles down the road, right, So that is
- 30:51Speaker 1: something that I've always kind of thought anyway, But I
- 30:56Speaker 1: think I'm it's it's hard to be more aggressive than
- 31:01Speaker 1: what I already am, other than with time of year, right,
- 31:04Speaker 1: I mean go into the betting area October or something
- 31:08Speaker 1: like that, right, which I won't be just because of
- 31:11Speaker 1: time constraints. But if I could, maybe I just start
- 31:15Speaker 1: hunting and making those more aggressive moves earlier in the
- 31:18Speaker 1: season to try to try to find where they're at.
- 31:22Speaker 1: And for me, it's hard because in certain states. And
- 31:28Speaker 1: this is I hope I don't come off arrogant when
- 31:30Speaker 1: I say this, but when you have five deer that
- 31:33Speaker 1: are four or older on your property, you don't know
- 31:36Speaker 1: which one of those deers making that sign, right, You
- 31:39Speaker 1: can you can try to, you can guess or whatever,
- 31:44Speaker 1: but the only real way is with trail cameras and
- 31:48Speaker 1: with like in person encounters. Right. So yeah, it's uh,
- 31:56Speaker 1: it's And what I what I found is I guess
- 32:00Speaker 1: you want to say, is my bread and butter is
- 32:02Speaker 1: to go in and just start the rotation. Just get
- 32:07Speaker 1: in the timber, go to those historically good places first,
- 32:12Speaker 1: and then start crossing parts off the farm. Now here's
- 32:16Speaker 1: what I will tell you. If Gnarlie Charlie shows up,
- 32:18Speaker 1: I get a cut off half the farm because historically
- 32:22Speaker 1: he doesn't go through. He went through the main pinch
- 32:26Speaker 1: point one time. Last year and that was it. But
- 32:30Speaker 1: other than that, I get a chop that farm in
- 32:32Speaker 1: half and and just focus on more so how big
- 32:36Speaker 1: would that chunk be there? The focus area would be
- 32:40Speaker 1: like fos So, I mean it's still a lot to
- 32:43Speaker 1: think about. Yeah, that's a lot to process. I mean
- 32:47Speaker 1: I can spend my whole year drumming my brain trying
- 32:51Speaker 1: to figure out how to hunt eighty acres uh let alone.
- 32:56Speaker 1: But you have to remember, not every not every acre
- 33:01Speaker 1: in that four acres is really good for tree stands.
- 33:06Speaker 1: I mean it's some of it's wide open timber. Some
- 33:09Speaker 1: of it is like the bottoms, you know, the crick bottom.
- 33:15Speaker 1: Some of it is wide open egg field. So you
- 33:19Speaker 1: take you take your knowledge of the past years and
- 33:22Speaker 1: minds being thirteen years, and you're able to see where
- 33:25Speaker 1: the deer moving, what ridges they prefer, and you just
- 33:29Speaker 1: use that information to put yourself in the best possible position.
- 33:35Speaker 1: So gnarally, Charlie's your number one buck for sure, right
- 33:39Speaker 1: if if he's there, If he's there, um, hopefully this
- 33:42Speaker 1: weekend I get to come out and check some more
- 33:44Speaker 1: trail cameras and confirm it. But yeah, I mean, if
- 33:49Speaker 1: he's back, he's number one. But there's also a mammoth
- 33:54Speaker 1: eight pointer out there. Who Now, I think I told
- 33:58Speaker 1: you this in a previous episode that the first card
- 34:01Speaker 1: poll I have other than like this one class ten,
- 34:05Speaker 1: which is absolutely great deer, and if he come by,
- 34:08Speaker 1: I'd probably shoot him. But there are three other deer
- 34:13Speaker 1: that made them uh, so a total of five deer
- 34:17Speaker 1: I would say that have made themselves known last year.
- 34:20Speaker 1: And if last year is the same as this year
- 34:23Speaker 1: and all these deer showback up, uh, it could be
- 34:25Speaker 1: a really good year as far as putting the the
- 34:29Speaker 1: pieces of the puzzle together using the data that I
- 34:31Speaker 1: collected last year. So, um, I gotta let's just assume
- 34:36Speaker 1: they made it. Yeah, what what would what would be
- 34:39Speaker 1: the other deer um that you'd be looking at? So
- 34:43Speaker 1: not if Narali Tcharler is back he's number one, what
- 34:46Speaker 1: would be the next buck you'd be the most excited about. Yeah?
- 34:50Speaker 1: So there's this ten pointer and he's a hilarious act
- 34:55Speaker 1: drawing of a ten pointer. And I don't mean like
- 34:58Speaker 1: he's not a tw ten pointer, but he is that
- 35:02Speaker 1: hundred and seventy typical ten beautiful Iowa white tail, and
- 35:08Speaker 1: he'll probably a five year old this year, and he
- 35:11Speaker 1: was one seventy last year. He was probably about one
- 35:14Speaker 1: sixty two or three year a little one sixties as
- 35:18Speaker 1: a ten this year, you know, just if if he
- 35:21Speaker 1: does make it, another one is an absolutely giant eight pointer,
- 35:27Speaker 1: well passed his years. He's just this cage, another perfect
- 35:31Speaker 1: frame with a split G two on one side. Um,
- 35:35Speaker 1: he's one of them that was running around last year.
- 35:38Speaker 1: And then what was the other one, uh, probably another
- 35:42Speaker 1: one sixty class nine pointer that had a big series
- 35:47Speaker 1: ten total points, but he was the main frame nine
- 35:49Speaker 1: with a split G two on the on the four
- 35:53Speaker 1: point side, so he's running around. And then there was
- 35:56Speaker 1: another so that's four. And then there was another ten
- 36:00Speaker 1: pointer really tight, probably just out to his ears, but
- 36:04Speaker 1: really tall. And he was a three year old last
- 36:08Speaker 1: year at a probably one fifty class one one maybe,
- 36:14Speaker 1: but you know, at another year, he'll be a four
- 36:18Speaker 1: year old this year. If he makes it, then that
- 36:21Speaker 1: would be awesome. And then you have your other deer
- 36:24Speaker 1: that are mature but not necessarily a you know, anything
- 36:30Speaker 1: to brag about in the antler category. Yeah, man, well
- 36:34Speaker 1: you've got some options hopefully, yeah, And you know, I
- 36:37Speaker 1: hope that doesn't come off ar again, It's just I
- 36:40Speaker 1: live where I live. He can't falter for that. Um. Now,
- 36:44Speaker 1: here's here's a question. And I know we've we've talked
- 36:47Speaker 1: about this in the past a little bit, but I'm
- 36:49Speaker 1: just curious to see where it stands right now. Let's
- 36:51Speaker 1: say Gnarly shows up on camera this summer, but to
- 36:54Speaker 1: get out there and start hunting, he's you know, showing
- 36:57Speaker 1: up on camera here and there, But one of these
- 36:58Speaker 1: other bucks show in shooting range. Is this the year
- 37:02Speaker 1: that you're going to pass on some of these shooters
- 37:04Speaker 1: because you really want to get Gnarly or what. Yeah,
- 37:08Speaker 1: I'll tell you right now. I'm not gonna pass on
- 37:11Speaker 1: a one seventy class tin pointer for Narlie Charlie. I'm not.
- 37:15Speaker 1: I'm not gonna do it. If any one of those
- 37:18Speaker 1: hit list deer show up, I'm gonna go after. I'm
- 37:21Speaker 1: gonna attempt the shot, right Um. But one one thing
- 37:26Speaker 1: I won't do is if Gnarly Sharp Narlie Charlie is
- 37:30Speaker 1: active on the farm for some reason, I will be
- 37:33Speaker 1: putting myself into position to hunt him, not these other deers.
- 37:37Speaker 1: So my decision making is going to be for him,
- 37:40Speaker 1: not anything else. The good part about this area is
- 37:45Speaker 1: that these deer, these five deer from last year, all
- 37:49Speaker 1: run the same circuit, right. I don't think they all
- 37:53Speaker 1: live in the same core area, but I think their
- 37:55Speaker 1: core area overlap in that on that farm. So certain
- 38:00Speaker 1: parts of the rough vacation, certain parts of them come
- 38:03Speaker 1: in and they come out. You know, they're checking them
- 38:05Speaker 1: for those and whatnot. And you know, if there's a
- 38:10Speaker 1: good chance that if I put myself in the right position,
- 38:12Speaker 1: I'm going to be able to have an encounter with
- 38:15Speaker 1: one of those one of those five deer man that's uh,
- 38:21Speaker 1: or any bonus bucks that come through, which would you
- 38:24Speaker 1: never know around there. The buck eye shot last year
- 38:26Speaker 1: was a bonus buck. So yeah, that's exciting. And the
- 38:31Speaker 1: hunting season, so you'll be gone early season, you'll be
- 38:35Speaker 1: gone mid season. So when are you gonna start hunting
- 38:38Speaker 1: the Mainiowa farm Then yeah, probably not. Um I'd love
- 38:45Speaker 1: to get out there and check some cameras. I'm gonna
- 38:48Speaker 1: be putting some cell cams out just to see the
- 38:52Speaker 1: deer movement pick up, But other than that, I doubt
- 38:56Speaker 1: I'm able to hunt that farm until after November three
- 39:03Speaker 1: or something like that. So I'm gonna vote on November three,
- 39:07Speaker 1: I think it is, and then I'm heading down to
- 39:10Speaker 1: the farm. So man, you know what I remember back
- 39:14Speaker 1: in the day, you would there have been some other
- 39:16Speaker 1: year where you said you weren't gonna be a hunt
- 39:18Speaker 1: in October at all. You weren't gonna be a hunt
- 39:19Speaker 1: until November, and I was pissed at you. Um, but
- 39:22Speaker 1: I'm not so man now, because you are hunting your
- 39:25Speaker 1: hunt all over the place, just not there in Iowa.
- 39:27Speaker 1: So it's nice to see how life has changed for
- 39:29Speaker 1: it and that way at least. Yeah, man, trust me,
- 39:32Speaker 1: if if things were different, like I can I'm leaving
- 39:38Speaker 1: the state to go to Michigan. If I told my
- 39:41Speaker 1: wife I was going to go down to the farm
- 39:43Speaker 1: an hour south to me for four days straight, she
- 39:47Speaker 1: would not have that. But because for some reason, because
- 39:50Speaker 1: this is a planned excursion, that that she's okay with it.
- 39:56Speaker 1: So whatever. So you know, I'm gonna be gone for
- 39:59Speaker 1: e or nine days on this mule your hunt, and
- 40:02Speaker 1: then I gotta come back. I gotta work, I gotta
- 40:04Speaker 1: play daddy. Daycare school is going to be starting up
- 40:09Speaker 1: with just some crazy as schedule like three days on
- 40:12Speaker 1: for two weeks and then three days off. So it's
- 40:16Speaker 1: gonna go three three two two three three two two
- 40:20Speaker 1: until they decided to go back full time or do
- 40:23Speaker 1: this remote thing whatever that is. So that has to
- 40:26Speaker 1: I have to play that into the cards. There's the
- 40:30Speaker 1: potential that my season just gets totally left if if
- 40:36Speaker 1: classes don't resume full time, because that means someone's gonna
- 40:41Speaker 1: have to watch the kids, my wife is going to
- 40:45Speaker 1: I'm gonna have to get a daycare provider, my wife's
- 40:47Speaker 1: gonna have to work from home, like all these things.
- 40:51Speaker 1: That's gonna really cripple the season. To be honest with you,
- 40:55Speaker 1: and how likely you think that is kind of thing.
- 41:00Speaker 1: You know, I'm not I'm not one for politics, but
- 41:04Speaker 1: I live in one of the most liberal counties in
- 41:09Speaker 1: the state of Iowa, which when they make decisions, they
- 41:15Speaker 1: tend to make them more towards the liberal right. If
- 41:18Speaker 1: we were gonna say this is just you know, hypothetical
- 41:22Speaker 1: or you know, stereotypes, let's just go by stereotypes. Republicans
- 41:28Speaker 1: they want school to go back in session, you know,
- 41:31Speaker 1: full time, no restrictions. Democrats they want the schools to
- 41:36Speaker 1: be closed and go remote right or some kind of
- 41:39Speaker 1: hybred model. Well, the counties that I live near, the
- 41:45Speaker 1: two main ones high they're the highest populated counties in Iowa.
- 41:49Speaker 1: There they always vote liberal or Democratic in every election.
- 41:54Speaker 1: So every decision that they've made thus far has scared
- 42:00Speaker 1: heared me into, you know, like hunting season maybe close
- 42:04Speaker 1: to home or just way more trips, way more one
- 42:09Speaker 1: or two day trips down and then come back. So yeah,
- 42:12Speaker 1: we'll see. Yeah, hopefully it works that okay for you,
- 42:16Speaker 1: and I hope so too. But either way, I'm equally
- 42:19Speaker 1: as excited for the upcoming season. Um, you know all
- 42:23Speaker 1: of I think we talked about it like three years ago,
- 42:26Speaker 1: four years ago, they did all that logging on the property,
- 42:29Speaker 1: and it is beautiful now in there. I mean it
- 42:32Speaker 1: is thick, it is nasty. It is what you want
- 42:36Speaker 1: for deer cover on your farm. I remember how stress
- 42:39Speaker 1: you were when was happening, and I was like, man,
- 42:40Speaker 1: just wait, just wait. I'm glad. I'm glad. Um, I
- 42:45Speaker 1: gotta see a picture of that. I'd like to see
- 42:47Speaker 1: what it looks like. Yeah, well, just stand in front
- 42:49Speaker 1: of a bush and take a picture. I mean, I'm
- 42:52Speaker 1: not I'm not joking. They're like it is six ft high,
- 42:58Speaker 1: just straight wall of patches where they took the wherever
- 43:05Speaker 1: they took one of these big mature trees down that
- 43:08Speaker 1: area where it's canopy was is a wall of smaller
- 43:14Speaker 1: trees bushes. You know. Uh, Woody browsed and it literally
- 43:20Speaker 1: holds deer and it's awesome. No, speaking of what you're
- 43:24Speaker 1: just saying a second ago, the Michigan trip, your travels,
- 43:28Speaker 1: Let's let's circle back on that a little bit. Um,
- 43:31Speaker 1: we talked this spring about your game plan. Has ever
- 43:34Speaker 1: anything changed in your mind if you've done any more
- 43:36Speaker 1: eat scouting or anything like that since we talked last
- 43:39Speaker 1: time about it? Um, Where where's your head ad on
- 43:42Speaker 1: all that? Yeah? Man? Uh? Along with the east scouting,
- 43:47Speaker 1: you know some people giving me tips on where I
- 43:50Speaker 1: should hunt. Uh, you know some near you, some about
- 43:53Speaker 1: forty five minutes north of you. Even had one guy
- 43:56Speaker 1: come up and he's like, dude, you need to come
- 43:57Speaker 1: to northern Michigan one of these antler restriction counties. I'm
- 44:02Speaker 1: telling you it would be it would be worth your
- 44:05Speaker 1: trip up there. So I've gotten a lot of Um,
- 44:10Speaker 1: I've gotten a lot of advice from people, everything from
- 44:14Speaker 1: you're wasting your time, You'll never see a deer to
- 44:17Speaker 1: you know, to don't sleep on Michigan. If you do
- 44:20Speaker 1: everything right, you'll get a crack at it, like a
- 44:23Speaker 1: one pointer or something like that. So, um, you know,
- 44:28Speaker 1: I'm I'm just excited to do I was talking to
- 44:30Speaker 1: my buddy Bob Polanic, and I was like, I'm just
- 44:33Speaker 1: excited to do something different. This would be the first
- 44:37Speaker 1: ever trip that well, other than the combination mule deer
- 44:42Speaker 1: white tail hunt I did in Nebraska, this will be
- 44:46Speaker 1: the first white tail focused trip I've ever taken out
- 44:49Speaker 1: of state. So I'm just excited to do something different,
- 44:53Speaker 1: Excited to see new terrain. Excited too, you know. You know,
- 44:59Speaker 1: I don't know, just sided for everything. And uh as
- 45:01Speaker 1: far as what I'm looking for in a buck, you know,
- 45:06Speaker 1: I used to give me ship for that comment. You know,
- 45:08Speaker 1: if it makes me go, uh, you know, I'm gonna
- 45:11Speaker 1: shoot it. Well, this is gonna be probably you know,
- 45:15Speaker 1: I'm gonna say it's gonna be a one percent mood
- 45:18Speaker 1: focus decision, Like what's my mood that day? Does that? Well,
- 45:23Speaker 1: here's a here's a four corn. I'm gonna be able
- 45:26Speaker 1: to take meat home? Why not? You know what I mean?
- 45:30Speaker 1: That's a the Michigan pointer right there, go for it, man. Yeah,
- 45:36Speaker 1: you know like you're saying, and I know we talked
- 45:39Speaker 1: about this before, but you definitely could get into them
- 45:44Speaker 1: and you could see some nice bucks. You know, I
- 45:46Speaker 1: wouldn't I wouldn't be shocked if you could shoot a hundred.
- 45:49Speaker 1: At the same time, it wouldn't be shocked if you
- 45:51Speaker 1: just saw year and a half olds and does and
- 45:54Speaker 1: not a single good buck. You know it could be.
- 45:57Speaker 1: And there are big bucks too, I mean you certainly
- 45:59Speaker 1: are so you never know, you could shoot a slammer, um,
- 46:03Speaker 1: but it will be interesting to see, you know, Bob
- 46:05Speaker 1: and I we go from Michigan and hunt Iowa. Here
- 46:08Speaker 1: to go from Iowa and hunt Michigan. I've never I
- 46:10Speaker 1: don't know a single person who has ever gone the
- 46:12Speaker 1: reverse order. Here the first person I know who lives
- 46:15Speaker 1: in Iowa that travels out of stage on Michigan. And
- 46:18Speaker 1: I'm glad I can take a little credit for that,
- 46:22Speaker 1: pre precious. I'll tell you this as as just a
- 46:26Speaker 1: fan of bow hunting in general. Right that time of year,
- 46:30Speaker 1: Let's just say I strike out on that first trip,
- 46:32Speaker 1: first three day hunt, and for some reason, I'm lucky
- 46:35Speaker 1: and I tag out early in Iowa. There's nothing stopping
- 46:38Speaker 1: me from getting back in my truck and going back
- 46:41Speaker 1: to Michigan and potentially hunting some of the rut up there. Yeah,
- 46:47Speaker 1: do it. I mean, I'll tell you what, whatever size
- 46:50Speaker 1: buck you kill, if you kill a buck here in Michigan,
- 46:52Speaker 1: that one's gonna be pretty sweet. You're gonna feel really
- 46:55Speaker 1: good about it. I tell you, I don't care what
- 46:58Speaker 1: I shoot. You know, if I shoot a buck in Michigan,
- 47:01Speaker 1: I'm gonna get it euro mounted and I'm gonna put it.
- 47:03Speaker 1: I don't care what size it is. I'm gonna get
- 47:05Speaker 1: it euro mounted. I'm gonna put it in my office.
- 47:08Speaker 1: I like it. I like it. I'm excited. I'm excited
- 47:12Speaker 1: for that one. So, no specific goal except for where
- 47:15Speaker 1: you want to kill. You want to fill a tag
- 47:17Speaker 1: of you know something. It's new experience and if I can,
- 47:21Speaker 1: if I can leave with a full full cooler, man,
- 47:24Speaker 1: that's a win. If you ask me, yeah, i'd i'd
- 47:27Speaker 1: have to agree. Well, good, I'm looking forward to that one. UM.
- 47:32Speaker 1: No restrictions as of right now, right yeah, yeah, no restrictions. UM,
- 47:37Speaker 1: over the counter tag, I can just show up and
- 47:39Speaker 1: buy buy yep, yep, by your kid when you get here.
- 47:43Speaker 1: Gas stations, grocery stores, all that stuff. Um, yep, there's yeah,
- 47:48Speaker 1: pretty much most not all grocery stores, but your Walmart's,
- 47:51Speaker 1: certain gas stations will we'll get you figured out there.
- 47:54Speaker 1: The only thing that you have to be aware of
- 47:55Speaker 1: and will cover it once you get here, just be
- 47:58Speaker 1: the c w D restrictions, Like what you can transport
- 48:01Speaker 1: across county lines. You know, if you want to bring
- 48:04Speaker 1: it home, you'd have to have the skull completely skinned
- 48:07Speaker 1: and cleaned out. You could bring like the antlers and
- 48:09Speaker 1: skull played back and boned out meat, but you you're
- 48:15Speaker 1: not supposed to take that stuff across county lines throughout
- 48:17Speaker 1: the state. Maybe I'll just find a taxi or must
- 48:20Speaker 1: there to do my if I if I shoot a buck, hey,
- 48:23Speaker 1: just do it there and then, you know, give me
- 48:25Speaker 1: another excuse to come up to Michigan. Yep, I got you.
- 48:29Speaker 1: I got good recommendations for all that stuff so perfect.
- 48:32Speaker 1: I love it. Um. I was talking a little about
- 48:37Speaker 1: the back forty. Talk about the back forty a little bit.
- 48:40Speaker 1: I got a question about the back forty. So you
- 48:44Speaker 1: guys have done all this really high folks, you know,
- 48:49Speaker 1: you've really focused on the habitat there over the last
- 48:53Speaker 1: couple or over this last year. Has it since because
- 48:58Speaker 1: I think the last time that we talked, you mentioned
- 49:00Speaker 1: that it really hasn't brought more deer into the farm
- 49:05Speaker 1: quite yet. But now that we've had a growing season
- 49:08Speaker 1: under our belt, I'm curious if if it's holding more
- 49:12Speaker 1: deer as of right now. Yeah, and I think the
- 49:16Speaker 1: answer is yes, I think definitely. Um, I saw two
- 49:21Speaker 1: things this winter. So after the first hunting season, after
- 49:25Speaker 1: we stopped hunting and left it alone, there was a
- 49:28Speaker 1: lot of deer in there, and a lot of deer
- 49:30Speaker 1: sign When I was scouting in March, I mean, there
- 49:32Speaker 1: was a lot of deer in there. So they're definitely
- 49:34Speaker 1: in there at that part of the year. Um, since
- 49:38Speaker 1: I've been back in the summer, there seems to be
- 49:40Speaker 1: a decent number of deer. I'm getting deer on trail camera.
- 49:44Speaker 1: I bumped a pretty decent buck the other day when
- 49:47Speaker 1: I went in there and do some work. Uh, like
- 49:49Speaker 1: a nice five point side on his right side and
- 49:52Speaker 1: like a weird funky fork dagger thing on his left. Um.
- 49:58Speaker 1: So right now, we haven't been able to make all
- 50:02Speaker 1: the changes I wanted to because the whole COVID thing
- 50:05Speaker 1: this spring completely shut down our spring plans, um like,
- 50:09Speaker 1: just changed a lot of the stuff we want to do.
- 50:11Speaker 1: So I got a little bit done the spring, and
- 50:13Speaker 1: then we're gonna try to do more over the next
- 50:15Speaker 1: ten days. We're doing some more stuff, but it's definitely
- 50:19Speaker 1: not the ideal. I still think though there's gonna be
- 50:22Speaker 1: some noticeable progress because of three big things. UM. This spring,
- 50:29Speaker 1: I wanted to address these old fields. So as you know,
- 50:33Speaker 1: a lot of the property just like old farm field
- 50:35Speaker 1: that was growing up just from whatever was out there,
- 50:38Speaker 1: and it had been mostly almost all this weed called
- 50:43Speaker 1: Mayor's Tale, and it's this invasive weed that has very
- 50:48Speaker 1: has no food value to deer, has very little cover.
- 50:52Speaker 1: Um the leaves dropped early, then you're just left kind
- 50:54Speaker 1: of bean stocks. So like once the leaves came down
- 50:57Speaker 1: in October, it was basically a like a bean field, um,
- 51:01Speaker 1: you know, with no beans, and a lot of the
- 51:05Speaker 1: deer didn't want to travel across that. Deer weren't betting
- 51:07Speaker 1: in that deer weren't feeding in that. UM. I wanted
- 51:10Speaker 1: to try to change that. So this spring, my plan
- 51:12Speaker 1: was to plant switch grass across a lot of these areas.
- 51:17Speaker 1: So I frost seeded switch grass, which basically means I
- 51:20Speaker 1: just excuse me, I broadcast switch grass seed over the
- 51:25Speaker 1: ground um early in the spring when I was still
- 51:28Speaker 1: freezing and thawing, freezing and thawing, and then it just
- 51:30Speaker 1: takes in the seed. And then I sprayed this pre
- 51:33Speaker 1: emergent herbicide that would kill the mayor's tail and that stuff,
- 51:37Speaker 1: and you know, reduce the competition for the switch grass
- 51:40Speaker 1: to come back in. So I did that, and then
- 51:43Speaker 1: I also planted a variety of little lines and coves
- 51:49Speaker 1: and visual barriers of that switch grass sorghum stuff that
- 51:53Speaker 1: I talked about earlier. I did that across different places
- 51:56Speaker 1: on the across the farm to create just more structure
- 51:59Speaker 1: out there in these fields. Um. And when I came
- 52:03Speaker 1: back from Idaho and went to go check it out
- 52:05Speaker 1: just recently, what I saw was a couple of things.
- 52:10Speaker 1: Number One, those screening areas came in mostly very good.
- 52:16Speaker 1: I tried it last year, they pretty much didn't come
- 52:18Speaker 1: in it all last year. This year they came in
- 52:19Speaker 1: pretty damn good. So we've got a lot of these
- 52:22Speaker 1: kind of like corn patches scattered throughout our walls of
- 52:26Speaker 1: corn scattered throughout. It's not corn, but it looks like
- 52:28Speaker 1: a So right there, it went from these like being
- 52:31Speaker 1: ten acre open fields and now not feeling like ten
- 52:34Speaker 1: acre open fields. Just with that. Secondly, by spring this spring,
- 52:41Speaker 1: I essentially eliminated almost all the Mayor's Tale and what
- 52:45Speaker 1: replaced it was some of that switch grass. But switch
- 52:48Speaker 1: grass is notoriously slow to grow, and I've I've remember
- 52:51Speaker 1: talked to it seems to be like you'll get some
- 52:53Speaker 1: the first year, but you'll get a lot more of
- 52:55Speaker 1: the second. So there's some switch grass in there, but
- 52:57Speaker 1: it's definitely not full of it. Um. But a bunch
- 53:00Speaker 1: of other stuff came in once the Mayor's tele competition
- 53:04Speaker 1: wasn't there. You know, I've got a bunch of different
- 53:06Speaker 1: kinds of grasses. I've got a bunch of different forbes,
- 53:10Speaker 1: a bunch of golden uh, golden rod, a bunch of
- 53:15Speaker 1: shrubby stuff. I mean, it's just diverse, all sorts of
- 53:18Speaker 1: different plant types out here, lots of tall, thick cover
- 53:22Speaker 1: in all these fields now where last year that wasn't
- 53:25Speaker 1: the case. So the fields are a lot better. So
- 53:28Speaker 1: I think that that almost doubles the amount of cover
- 53:30Speaker 1: we have on the farm compared to what it was
- 53:32Speaker 1: last year. And then last I am about quadrupling the
- 53:37Speaker 1: amount of food that we're planting. So last year I
- 53:40Speaker 1: probably got just over an acre of food plots in
- 53:42Speaker 1: and they didn't even come in that well, this year,
- 53:44Speaker 1: I'm closer to almost four acres of food plots that
- 53:47Speaker 1: I'm planning. Um, just because I did not see the
- 53:50Speaker 1: deer activity. That deer we're not hitting our food plots higher,
- 53:53Speaker 1: They're moving off to these bigger food sources on neighboring properties.
- 53:56Speaker 1: So so this year, I've, like I said, significantly increasing
- 54:00Speaker 1: at I've got a better understanding of how to plant
- 54:02Speaker 1: with an no tell drill. I'm planning another one of
- 54:04Speaker 1: these blends, but I feel good about this one. Um.
- 54:08Speaker 1: So if all this pans out, I'm gonna have four
- 54:11Speaker 1: times the amount of food out there, two times the
- 54:13Speaker 1: amount of cover out there, and these strategic you know,
- 54:17Speaker 1: walls of corn looking stuff making it even more broken up.
- 54:21Speaker 1: And then finally next week we're gonna come in and
- 54:23Speaker 1: plant I don't know, maybe forty fifty trees across the
- 54:28Speaker 1: farm in these old fields We're to create various like
- 54:32Speaker 1: little pockets of tree. So like a cluster of five
- 54:34Speaker 1: on this little knob, a cluster of four over here
- 54:37Speaker 1: in this corner, cluster four or five over here, and
- 54:40Speaker 1: create all these little pockets of evergreen cover two. So
- 54:43Speaker 1: you take all that, and I think you've got a
- 54:47Speaker 1: really diverse farm with a lot of cool stuff going
- 54:50Speaker 1: on with food and in in good places that can
- 54:53Speaker 1: be hunted that will hold there on the property, but
- 54:56Speaker 1: lots of covers scattered throughout. Um. And still that there's
- 54:59Speaker 1: that swam but naturally is right there in the middle too. Um.
- 55:03Speaker 1: And then then the last big thing we did is
- 55:05Speaker 1: that we did a prescribed fire across this big ridge
- 55:09Speaker 1: system we have that has some native prairie. I removed
- 55:13Speaker 1: a bunch of like this invasive tree essentially called buckthorne,
- 55:18Speaker 1: and then another bush called automotive, removed a lot of that,
- 55:22Speaker 1: and then we came in and burned this prairie area
- 55:25Speaker 1: on the ridge. And now it's come in just flush
- 55:28Speaker 1: full of stuff. So you've got like a three acre
- 55:32Speaker 1: ridge that has got like I don't know, nine ft
- 55:35Speaker 1: tall prairie grass in there and cedar trees. And and
- 55:40Speaker 1: then that's right next to a swamp which is next
- 55:42Speaker 1: to these overgrown fields with four acres of food plots
- 55:45Speaker 1: tucked inside of all that. I mean, I don't know.
- 55:48Speaker 1: That sounds like a white tail and wildlife mecha to me. Yeah. Man, well,
- 55:54Speaker 1: is now are there any deer from last year? If
- 55:58Speaker 1: you already checked cameras on that far? So I've only checked.
- 56:02Speaker 1: I've got one cell camera that I've been getting pictures on,
- 56:05Speaker 1: but all the rest I have not checked. Um, but yes,
- 56:10Speaker 1: you're wondering about bucks. Yeah, so there is a big
- 56:16Speaker 1: ten pointer that I was getting pictures of all the
- 56:19Speaker 1: way to the end. Not big, but there was a
- 56:21Speaker 1: three year old ten point that was still showing up
- 56:24Speaker 1: on camera to the end of last season. He was
- 56:27Speaker 1: like a nice salad kind of tight and tall ten
- 56:29Speaker 1: pointer last year, and I haven't heard of anyone killing
- 56:32Speaker 1: that deer. He was showing up pretty much almost to
- 56:35Speaker 1: the very end of the season. I think I got pictures,
- 56:37Speaker 1: so I feel good that he probably made it, and
- 56:38Speaker 1: he did. He'll be he'll be a really nice buck.
- 56:41Speaker 1: So I'm really hoping that buck shows up. Um, there's
- 56:45Speaker 1: that funky buck that I just mentioned to you that
- 56:47Speaker 1: I bummed the other day. I you know, I couldn't
- 56:49Speaker 1: see his body size, so I don't know if he's
- 56:51Speaker 1: like a huge body mature buck, he's you know, he'd
- 56:54Speaker 1: be a shooter. I couldn't tell for sure just by
- 56:56Speaker 1: watching him run away. Um, there is this big uh
- 57:04Speaker 1: fork buck that we were getting a bunch of pictures
- 57:07Speaker 1: through most of last year. Like he was like tall,
- 57:09Speaker 1: imagine like a I don't even know how to like
- 57:13Speaker 1: what he looks like, almost like a mule deer with
- 57:18Speaker 1: like a fork dantler mule, like a four point what
- 57:21Speaker 1: they would call two point mule deer almost except for
- 57:23Speaker 1: the forks were farther out on the beams, not like
- 57:26Speaker 1: super deep on the beams. Just a big four pointer
- 57:29Speaker 1: last year. Um, if he is back this year, he
- 57:34Speaker 1: would be a really cool deer. And I think he
- 57:35Speaker 1: might be um. And there was like a nice six
- 57:39Speaker 1: pointer that showed up on trail camera on the cell
- 57:42Speaker 1: cam the other day that I don't think would be
- 57:44Speaker 1: a shooter for me, but he'd be a shooter buck
- 57:46Speaker 1: for um my dad, who's gonna come and hunt again?
- 57:52Speaker 1: I brought him out there to hunt last November for
- 57:54Speaker 1: a couple of days and it didn't work out. But
- 57:55Speaker 1: I'm gonna have him back to hunt for like five
- 57:59Speaker 1: days right around that time period of early October when
- 58:02Speaker 1: you were gonna be here. He's gonna coming on the
- 58:04Speaker 1: fifth and hunt for four or five days during that period.
- 58:08Speaker 1: And I'm really hoping to get him a crack at
- 58:10Speaker 1: something so that that bucker, you know, any nice like
- 58:14Speaker 1: two year old, would be like the biggest buck he's
- 58:15Speaker 1: ever shot, So that would be that would be super cool. Um,
- 58:21Speaker 1: you know, everything else that I know of last year,
- 58:23Speaker 1: there's like this really big eight porter I saw not
- 58:25Speaker 1: that I saw got pictures of last year. I heard
- 58:27Speaker 1: from a neighbor that someone shot him and never found him,
- 58:30Speaker 1: so he might be dead. Um the funky sided that
- 58:34Speaker 1: there's like a funky nine. Someone sent me a picture
- 58:36Speaker 1: of him getting shot by someone. And then I killed
- 58:39Speaker 1: the wide eight. So basically everything we got pictures of
- 58:41Speaker 1: last year was was knocked was knocked off through hunting season.
- 58:46Speaker 1: So so yeah, I don't know. I will hopefully know
- 58:49Speaker 1: in another week or two when I do check up,
- 58:51Speaker 1: but I'm much more hopeful this year. I really think
- 58:55Speaker 1: if if we get rained and the food plots coming okay, um,
- 58:59Speaker 1: I think we're we've got We've got some cool stuff
- 59:02Speaker 1: in there that that should make it should make it promising.
- 59:05Speaker 1: So it's another one situations like it was last year,
- 59:08Speaker 1: a little bit where it's not me. It's not just
- 59:11Speaker 1: me hunting it. So I'm you know, I'm not gonna
- 59:13Speaker 1: bull hunting it quite the way I would normally do it.
- 59:15Speaker 1: You know, that first time we go in there will
- 59:18Speaker 1: be mostly just trying to get my dad a buck
- 59:20Speaker 1: for that first hunt, and then I don't think I'll
- 59:22Speaker 1: be going back to hunt it again until we start
- 59:24Speaker 1: filming in the second week of November, and at that
- 59:29Speaker 1: point a couple other people are gonna be joining me
- 59:32Speaker 1: out there, and we'd be trying to get them a deer.
- 59:34Speaker 1: So you know, it's it's it's a little bit less
- 59:37Speaker 1: about me killing a deer out there and more about
- 59:40Speaker 1: sharing with other people and learning some stuff and seeing
- 59:43Speaker 1: how the property grows and changes. And so I think
- 59:45Speaker 1: my goals up there for the back forty would just
- 59:49Speaker 1: be for it to be a much better experience for people.
- 59:53Speaker 1: Last year, and we went out there and hunted, it
- 59:54Speaker 1: was a lot of slow hunts. You know, we killed
- 59:58Speaker 1: one guest hunter killed a doe, and I did kill
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: buck but it was like that was like the one
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: flash of greatness that one day. Um, I would love
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: it if this is a place where, like, if you
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: go out there, you better have your seatbelt on because
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: it's gonna be an exciting hunt. I'm hoping it'd be nice. Man.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: That's my goal for the back four this year is like,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: give me an exciting, fun place for people to hunt,
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: um and shoot. If there's a nice but sure buck
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: out there, that's a bonus. Yeah, yeah, man, that's awesome.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: One one thing I thought of real quick that has
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: even has me even more excited about the farm that
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: I hunt is crop rotation here. Um the farmer, like
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: the farmer doesn't take the corn out of this forty
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: acre field until mid November. And it's awesome because it
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: creates this wall between a road in the timber that
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: is just this travel corridor for that I've that I've
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: kind of figured out. They come upper ridge, they cut
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: this ridge. It's where I it's where I shot my
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: buck in two thousand eighteen, that big nine. So I'm
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: excited to get back and I'll start hunting that particular
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: piece of the farm just because of the crop rotation.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: Now the crop rotation on the farm near your home.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: Is that a does it matter as far as crop
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: rotation or do you see like if it's a corn
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: ear there's more deer, or it's being here it's more
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: more dear. Yeah, you know what, I have not seen
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: it really influence things every single year regardless there's there's something. UM.
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: What is nice though, is that UM I like it
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: when whatever is on that farm is different than the
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: neighboring farm. And that's what we have this year. So
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: I've got a neighbor with standing corn, but on our
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: farm it's just beans. UM, So at least there's a
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: little bit of both right there, and and it is
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: kind of nice. Like in that front section where that
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: front food plat system is, Um, what you have is
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: basically my two acre. Like there's a finger of timber
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: that comes out, and then there's this food plat system
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: tucked into the inside corner of that finger of timber.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: And so I've got this two acres of food mixed
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: with cover and brush and all this stuff, my four
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: leaf clover food plus system. And then right across the
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: creek from that is a sliver of beans. But it
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: really is only like I don't know, a hundred yards wide,
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: and then it hits a standing corn field on the neighbors.
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: So there's a bunch of stuff in small proportions, all
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: stacked in this little corner, and that's right next to
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: this primo bedding area. UM. So these deer are coming
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: in and out and they can feed in the open
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: bean field, but it still feels pretty secluded because that
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: standing corns right next to it, and then my wall
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: of sorghum in uh Egyptian wheat is just on the
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: other side, and then this thick brush on the bedding
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: airs right next to that. Um. So there's been like
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: a ton of activity in there this summer that I
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: think is because things just worked out nicely to have
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: standing corps next to this and my standing stuff on
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: one side. Um, it feels it's not as wide open
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: as it is some years, which I think is going
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: to be a good thing. Yeah, So we shall see, Um,
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: we shall see. Yep. So you know, I think I
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: mentioned that earlier. You know, I I typically have a
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: ton of mature deer on the farm this time of
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: year or whenever I check my trail cameras by now,
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: and I haven't checked him since ship for early July,
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: and I was a little disappointed. I had the one
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: good deer that was on camera. That was it. But
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: this is one of those years where I call it
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: a being year on the farm, and I think what
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: I'm hoping is that it redeems itself, like the farm
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: kind of redeems itself, and once the um the beans
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: became palatable, more dear kind of come and show themselves
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: on the farm and work their way in into it.
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: So I'm hoping that that will make a big difference.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: And uh, tomorrow or whenever I go and check my cameras,
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: I will have more intel and uh more information and
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: hopefully the big dogs show up. Man, if the big
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: dog shows up, I might need to get you back
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: on the horn and talk to you for five minutes
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: to think about it, right right, I know, because I'm
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: excited to see um. So this year is hopefully going
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: to be the year of Gnarly Charlie for you. In November, well,
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: October is going to be the year of travels for
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: you with South Dakota and the Michigan Adventure. And for
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: me it's gonna be Tran year three and hoping to
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: see the back forty bloom into something special this year. Um,
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: other than killing you know, one of your big mature
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: box in Iowa and having a great experience in Michigan
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: and filling a filling a cooler. Um. And I'm sure, well, yeah,
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: I guess do you speak to this too? Do you
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: have any other main goals this season? Probably something with
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: your South Dakota hunt, of course, but anything, anything, they're
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: worth noting. I'm just excited. Man. The older I get,
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: I get a different vibe off bow hunting, and it's
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: more of this weird connection than it is to let's
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: go slay some giants, you know, like the old Dan
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: Johnson and this, Like like I'm gonna turn forty in November,
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: so I'm really just going out right. I'm really just
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: going to enjoy myself. Man, This this hunt that I
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: do in South Dakota is awesome. Yeah. I mean it
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: is one of those hunts where your backpack in, you're
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: doing the whole back country thing. You you get up
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: on a knob, you glass and there's no human structures, Like,
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: you don't see farms, you don't see antenna's. You you
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: gotta look real hard for him, but it's just you're
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: in the middle of nowhere, and there's something about that.
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: I made a Facebook or Instagram post the other day
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: where I don't know what I like more the actual
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: hunt of the hunting season or the fact of this isolation,
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: being able to isolate yourself and just be alone in nature.
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: And I don't know, man, I'm starting to love that
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: equally to the chess game with some of these animals.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: So it's just I just look forward to this stuff
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: every single year, and the passion really hasn't died down.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: It's just changed and and I am I'm just so
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: geeked for, you know, that that drive, that anticipation. I mean,
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: the other or yesterday, I cleaned my water bladders out,
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: I got my uh you know, I got my food organized.
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: I got my backpacks organized, some of my gear organized
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: for the muleeer trip. You know. I I put a
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: new site on my bow. I got confirmation that my
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: new arrows are coming in. So all, as much as
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: I feel like I'm behind and say I'm behind, you know,
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: it's just a matter of you know, checking the boxes
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: and putting the pieces of the puzzle together so that
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: the you know, the two days before the I leave
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: for South Dakota. I know that, Hey, my mobile setup
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: is ready for Michigan. My trail cameras are out in
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: you know, in Iowa, and I have all the gear
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: I need for South Dakota. I am just at that
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: point on Auto Islet, and I just go where the
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: wind takes me. So tell me this, What is one
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: area of improvement that you are hoping to focus on
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: in some way this year? Is there anything that you
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: thought about leading into this year that you want to
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: try to do a little differently, or that you want
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: to learn from last year, or something like that. You know,
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: I think it's hard because you don't know what to
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: improve on until you make those mistakes, right, So you fail,
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: and then you learn from that failure and you make
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: better decisions the next time you set foot in the
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: timber or a field, so to speak. I don't I
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: don't know that I've necessarily improved or gotten better at anything.
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: One thing that I'm going to do is to just
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: slow down and absorb, you know, absorb that, you know,
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: not necessarily sit in front of a phone all day
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: looking at whether, looking at maps, you know, just deciphering
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: all that talking about that equation that if the wind
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: is doing this, and the terrain is this, then I
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: need to do this and all that stuff, just like
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: go and make my decision with every step. If that
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: makes sense, I think so okay, Um, I think not
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: react or I want to react not playing, If that
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: makes sense. I think I follow you. I think I
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: follow you. That's kind of in line with one of
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: my areas of improvement is I want to take my
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: uh kind of like the stuff I talked about with
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: Andre and some other guys earlier, take my scouting to
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: the next level, like like not be so dependent just
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: on trail cameras and what I see and try to
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: get my ground game up a little bit and some
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: I'm really trying to folk us more on paying attention
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: to tracks, trying to pay attention to what's the sign
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: telling you, and being willing to push in and and
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: and and lose. This goes back to something from last week,
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: lose the fear of failure. A lot of my hunting,
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: especially early on, and every year I've gotten better as
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: I've gotten more experienced, but there was always this fear
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: of failure. You know. It was like you hear all
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: these people, and you read all these magazines that preach,
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: don't spook a mature buck, don't let those bucks know
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: you're there. You've got to make sure that you know
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: they have no idea because if they catch you once
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: you're done. So so much my hunting revolved around, you know,
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: keeping pressure as low as possible, never letting a deer
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: know I was there, and and and stressing out all
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: the time about that. Not that that's not important, it's
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: I think it's still very important. But I'm also learning
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: that you you can get away with things if it's
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: done in the smart way. And because you've got to
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: take stabs to get the kill, um, you gotta get
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: aggressive sometimes to make it happen. So so I want
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: to this year lose a little bit of that fear
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: of failure because sometimes you do have to swing for
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: the fences to hit a home run. Um, you can't
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: always just sit in the sideline. So that's I want to.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: I think I've been taking steps there each of the
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: past few years, and UM, I'm wanting to take another
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: step this year in that kind of way. So I'm
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: gonna be a little bit more aggressive. I'm gonna get
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: deeper into things that I have in the past. I'm
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: going to explore just a little bit more, um and
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: if I bump something or if I screw it up
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: that day, well learn from it and adjust and we'll
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: see what happens. Um. So that's that's what I'm hoping for.
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: Any last things you want to cover off on for
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: our goals hopes and hit list d you know, I
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: have one more small goal, and that is to get
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: my son and daughter out for a field edge hunt
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: where I'm not expecting to shoot anything per se, but
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: I want to get them out and get them in
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: a tree stand for you know, for an hour or
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: so and let them see like hopefully the goal is
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: to let them see deer in a in their natural environment,
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: you know, and say, oh look, hey there's a deer
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: right there. Watch him. Let's just watch even if he's
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: a hundred yards away. Let him put up the binoculars,
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: let them do all that stuff. So a little bit
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: of the you know, the father teaching their kids how
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: to hunt stuff, um while the weather's good, and uh,
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: get some of that going to Yeah, that's awesome. I
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: was I was thinking about trying to get Everett out
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: for a little sit at this sometime this fall too.
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: If if somehow it worked out were schedule and weather
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: came together, and to do something that's sitting, like a
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: box blind or a blind that would be comfortable for
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: him and we wouldn't spook ten tho deer that would
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: be that'd be awesome because he is like my son
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: is nuts for here right now. Um. Every night before bed,
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: he wants to watch a deer buck show, as he
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: calls him. So we watch a little bit of deer
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: Buck before bed, and he when there's a buck on screen,
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: he's rattling. He's got his own rattley antlers. He goes
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: to bed, he brings his rattling antlers to bed with him.
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: He's got a grunt tube. So he's grunting, and he'll
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: I swear to goodness, swear to goodness. I have to
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: say goodness because if I say I swear to God,
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: or if I say, oh my God. By accident, he's
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: starting to repeat everything. So I'm trying to make about that. Yeah,
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: I'm trying to be more careful my language these days. Um.
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: But he he will do a regular grunt. He knows
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: how to do this basic bra he knows how to
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: snort weez, so he'll snort weez at bucks, and then
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: he also he'll try to stop a buck to get
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: a shot, so when the bucks getting close, he'll start going, Matt, Matt,
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: it's so funny. Um, so that's it's funny you say that. Okay,
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: So I got all my mouths in my living room, right,
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: and I asked my daughter, which which deer of all
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: these mounts do you like the best? She points to
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: one and I say why she's like, because it's got
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: big anglers. Like okay, my my oldest son, Hey, what
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: what do you like about? Or what's your favorite deer
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: on the wall points to the same buck and says
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: it's because it's got big anglers. And my little my
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: my two year old, I go, which one is your favorite?
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: And he points to the mount with the uh, probably
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: the smallest rack up there, and I go, buddy, why
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: do you like that buck? And he goes, big neck,
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: big neck, and it is it is. It is the
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: two thousand sixteen. I shot this buck and his neck
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: is just all swollen and huge, and I lost it.
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: I was like, y, so funny, that is great. Oh man,
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: it's gonna be so much fun when these guys are
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: out there hunting with us. I had a conversation with
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: a seventy two year old the other day, um, who
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: his kids are my age now, right, and he's now
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: transitioned into grandpa mode where he takes his grandchildren out
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: sometimes fishing and hunting, and he's he's telling me his
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: favorite the thing he remembers the most is when they
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: start to get into their teenage years and they still
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: really like the outdoors, and they really haven't. They've made
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: a decision that they want to be an outdoorsman. It's
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: okay to not go hang out with your friends, right
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: every single weekend. They want to do the hunting thing. Right.
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: He's like, that's awesome. But what I love even more
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: is when we have arguments, or when we used to
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: have arguments over where to go set up. He's like,
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: that stuck with me, and that showed me that they
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: were just as passionate as I was about, you know,
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: getting into hunting, because they they started forming their own
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: opinions on on how animals moved and where they should
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: set up and all these things. And he's like, it
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: was stressful at the time, but I absolutely look back
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: and I absolutely loved that stress. That's awesome. That that
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: will be cool, That will be cool. Well, we've gotta
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: lot to look forward to, my friend, several more years
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: until that though, But man, I'll tell you this, Mark,
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: good luck this upcoming fall. I hope you have a blast.
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: Thank you, sir, same to you. Let's let's make sure
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: we're checking in as frequently as we possibly can over
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: these coming months so we can keep the progress updates coming.
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: And uh, hopefully next time we talked for one of
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: these things, I'll have an Idaho story for you. Absolutely. Man,
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: all right, Bud, thank you, And that is today's episode.
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: Hopefully enjoyed this one, little lighthearted, a little bit focused
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: on Dan and not a little bit completely focused on
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: my season and Dan season. But uh, this is something
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: we try to lay out there so you can follow
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: along with us throughout the rest of the season and
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: kind of see some of the things we're thinking about,
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: and then as the season plays out, you can kind
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: of compare and contrast to what we're hoping for or
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: what we were thinking to what actually happens. And then
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: when the season is done, we're gonna do a postmortem
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: and talk about what we learned. Did we meet those goals,
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: did we fail to meet those goals, What do we
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: learn from all of that? What kinds of mistakes do
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: we make? There's sure to be a lot of that,
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: so be sure to tune in see how this thing
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: pans out, see what stories come to life, and uh
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: see if maybe Dan and I can feel a tag
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: or two, and hopefully you as well. So thank you
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: for listening, thanks for joining us for this one. We
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: will be back next week with all sorts of interesting
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: new topics, and until then, thank you and stay wired
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: to Hunt.
