- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome back to the Elon Musk Podcast.
- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical crossroads, The
- 0:08Shape, SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company and Neurolink.
- 0:13I'm your host, Will Walden. So is NASA about to cancel their
- 0:18gigantic SLS Space Launch System rocket?
- 0:22This is the rocket that's going to send people back to the moon
- 0:26and eventually send people to Mars.
- 0:29It's built on legacy systems from the old space shuttle.
- 0:32And how would that impact Boeing?
- 0:35Who is their primary contractor for this?
- 0:37It sounds like they're going to be laying off hundreds of people
- 0:41because there's a possible cancellation of the SLS rocket.
- 0:46Now, this is a successful rocket.
- 0:48It sent a probe, which is the first capsule that people would
- 0:53be using around the moon. And they came back down to Earth
- 0:56and there were some problems because it was the first ever
- 0:59flight of this thing. But they're finding solutions
- 1:02for those, and they're headed for the second launch in the
- 1:06next few years. Now, my dear, SpaceX is
- 1:10developing the Starship down in Boca Chica Star Base, Texas, at
- 1:15the tip of Texas on the Gulf of Mexico.
- 1:18And the Starship, even though it does have a few problems and has
- 1:24some some iterations that it needs to go through, a lot of
- 1:29iterations that it needs to go to in order to send people back
- 1:31to the moon into Mars, there's no reason why NASA should
- 1:36continue building the SLS in my opinion.
- 1:40Now that being said, if they cancel the SLS, that would mean
- 1:46that they are. NASA is going to be using SpaceX
- 1:51and probably Blue Origin for some of the Artemis program.
- 1:58For most, the Artemis program, the Starship would be sending
- 2:03people to orbit. Actually, you know what they
- 2:07could do, and this is a thing that we've talked about numerous
- 2:11times on our space channel on YouTube, Space News Pod.
- 2:15They would send people to orbit in a Falcon 9 rocket where they
- 2:19would rendezvous with a Starship.
- 2:21And a Starship has to refuel between 10 and 20 times.
- 2:26We're not exactly sure what the number's going to be yet because
- 2:29SpaceX still has to finish the Starship.
- 2:32It's right now, it's in the testing phase, and Flight 8 is
- 2:35coming up in the next month, according to Elon Musk and
- 2:38insiders of SpaceX. So the fact that they already
- 2:44have the capable hardware to send them to orbit is a huge
- 2:47thing. Now, the Starship would be
- 2:49parked in orbit, similar to the space station, but not as high
- 2:53up, and they would rendezvous with a Dragon capsule with the
- 2:57Starship. Now, those systems are already
- 3:00there, so they could use the universal adapter that they
- 3:05already use on the International Space Station to dock with the
- 3:10Starship. So the Dragon capsule would have
- 3:12the adapter on it, so it could dock with a Starship already.
- 3:16So it's already the hardware's already there for that.
- 3:18Now the Starship, mind you, hasn't made it to orbit yet,
- 3:22like a full orbit, hasn't made a full orbit, hasn't made re
- 3:25entry, but also hasn't made it to the moon yet.
- 3:29But this system wouldn't be the same system as they're testing.
- 3:34Now. This is the whole new Starship.
- 3:37And the Starship that they would be using would be the lunar
- 3:40variant, which is the HLS, a human landing system.
- 3:43And I want to remind everybody that the Starship is huge.
- 3:47It's around 150 to 200 feet tall and imagine a 15 story building
- 3:55landing vertically on the moon's surface.
- 4:00Is that terrifying to anybody else?
- 4:03I'm not a naysayer. I think SpaceX has done amazing,
- 4:06amazing things for space exploration, and I see this as a
- 4:13way for them to build a space station on the moon with
- 4:19Starships. Now, this is a whole other
- 4:22thing. But because the Starship is so
- 4:24big, they can use those as temporary space stations on the
- 4:28moon, or lunar stations, I should say.
- 4:29So what they're going to do, this is the plan, like we
- 4:33discussed before, rendezvous in orbit with the Dragon, then the
- 4:38Dragon separates from the Starship, and then the Starship
- 4:42makes its way to the moon. Therefore, there's no other
- 4:46systems in place, there's no Boeing capsules, no SLS is just
- 4:51two SpaceX rockets. Now if they can get a Blue
- 4:58Origin rocket to do the same thing, I believe NASA will
- 5:02contract Blue Origin to do the first part.
- 5:07It's going to take a long time for Blue Origin to get people
- 5:11rated for the rocket, but New Glen as a possibility could get
- 5:16human rated. But there's no reason why they
- 5:19should do that because Falcon 9 already exists and Falcon Heavy
- 5:23already exists. So it depends on what orbit they
- 5:25want us, what they want to park a Starship in.
- 5:29But landing 150 foot tall Starship on the moon seems
- 5:32incredibly, incredibly difficult.
- 5:36They're having problems landing in a on Earth already.
- 5:41They haven't made it back into orbit or out of orbit back down
- 5:45without destroying the Starship. It did land in the Indian Ocean,
- 5:50but it wasn't in good shape and they don't know how to
- 5:55propulsively land a Starship yet.
- 5:58They're figuring it out and it could take them a few years to
- 6:01do this. Could take 5-6 years to do this.
- 6:04But the reason why they're cutting off Boeing and SLS is
- 6:09because it cost so much money to launch that gigantic NASA rocket
- 6:16every time. It's billions of dollars.
- 6:19They've spent roughly $3 billion annually on the rocket and its
- 6:23associated ground systems. SpaceX, for example, has
- 6:27developed and launched 2 heavy lift rockets, the Falcon Heavy
- 6:30and the Starship, while Blue Origin has introduced its own
- 6:33competitor, the New Glen. These private sector rockets,
- 6:36which incorporate reusable technology, are estimated to fly
- 6:40at a fraction of the cost of the SLS, which further undermines
- 6:44its long term viability. But there's people that are
- 6:48supporting the SLS. They argue that it provides
- 6:51unmatched capability for crude deep space missions,
- 6:54particularly in carrying large payloads to the moon, into Mars
- 6:58and beyond. They also contend that the
- 7:00government backed program like Artemis needs a reliable,
- 7:03dedicated launch vehicle rather than relying solely on
- 7:06commercial providers. But this argument is losing
- 7:11traction as SpaceX demonstrates their ability to deliver cost
- 7:15effective, high performance, gigantic massive launch systems.
- 7:20Super high power, the most powerful rocket ever.
- 7:23Now, we all know, you and me, everybody listening to this
- 7:28knows that Elon Musk and Trump are buddy buddy.
- 7:32The Trump administration will move to eliminate the SLS.
- 7:37If they do, and if they move to eliminate the funding in its
- 7:42budget proposal, the final decision will be on Congress.
- 7:47Now, lawmakers have historically supported the rocket due to his
- 7:50ties to key aerospace contractors and the thousands of
- 7:54jobs it supports across multiple states.
- 7:56However, shifting political priorities and mounting budget
- 7:58pressures could change that calculus.
- 8:01And Donald Trump doesn't just want to go to the moon.
- 8:03He wants to go to Mars. And Elon Musk is the biggest
- 8:06proponent of that on this planet.
- 8:09He started a rocket company, in particular, to send a plant to
- 8:13Mars to inspire people. Now, what does Elon have to do
- 8:20with all of this? Well, we all know that Elon
- 8:25talks to Donald Trump regularly. Elon has been in his ear
- 8:29obviously about the SLS system, the cost effective and Elon, of
- 8:37course, he's in charge of Doge. So he could cut the budget if he
- 8:42wants to. And at least he can, he can
- 8:46justify the budget cut knowing that his company and Blue Origin
- 8:52could save the government money, $3 billion a year on this
- 8:57system, the ground system and the rocket.
- 8:59So the ground systems are everything that launches the
- 9:01rocket. So the water deluge system, all
- 9:06the people on the ground that would be fired, you know, like
- 9:10they're be terminated, they'll be fired.
- 9:12They won't have jobs. Their families will suffer.
- 9:15If all of this happens and the SLS has been a jobs program for
- 9:21a lot of states, hundreds of employees, thousands of jobs
- 9:25will be, they'll be fired because of this.
- 9:30And if they're trying to cut government spending, I can
- 9:33understand that. And these people, some of these
- 9:37people may be shuffled around in the system.
- 9:41But even if Boeing secures a short term extension for the SLS
- 9:44program, the long term outlook remains uncertain.
- 9:48NASA is already exploring alternative pathways for
- 9:51Artemis, including increase reliance on SpaceX.
- 9:56They've contracted SpaceX to develop human landing systems,
- 10:00the Starship. The growing interest in
- 10:03leveraging private sector launch capabilities for future lunar
- 10:06missions, too. Because they're going to send
- 10:07Rovers and they're going to send all sorts of equipment.
- 10:10And if Blue Origin can, Jeff Bezos's rocket company can send
- 10:14things to the moon just like SpaceX can, at a fraction of the
- 10:18cost of the SLS, because they need to build infrastructure up
- 10:20there too. You can't just send people the
- 10:22moon to live and not have water and shelter and the things that
- 10:26we take for granted down here and food.
- 10:30You can't send that send people up there without those things.
- 10:32Same to Mars. You can't send people to Mars
- 10:35without all those things. You have to build a year plus of
- 10:40infrastructure for the Martians that will be Martians, the
- 10:45people that live on Mars for over a year.
- 10:47You know, because the the gateway back, it takes so long.
- 10:53It's about nine months before a return trip can happen.
- 10:56So they need a reliable commercial partner to build the
- 11:01systems and also send the systems to Mars.
- 11:06Jeff Bezos has historically talked about people living and
- 11:11working in space. And with Blue Origin, he can
- 11:16make that dream come true. He's been talking about it since
- 11:18he was a little boy. You know, the first thing that
- 11:21he wanted to do instead of Amazon was try to get people to
- 11:25live in and work in space. He was trying to find ways to do
- 11:28that before he just happened upon Amazon.
- 11:31He had this idea of like, hey, why don't we send books through
- 11:34the mail And it worked. And now he has all the money to
- 11:38build his Blue Origin company, which is his lifelong dream.
- 11:41So Elon and Jeff Bezos, 2 of the richest people in the world have
- 11:47rocket companies and those commercial rocket companies,
- 11:51they're shaking hands with Donald Trump right now.
- 11:53Both of them. They're both of the
- 11:54inauguration. Big tech was at the inauguration
- 11:58and we know how that works. We all know how the government
- 12:02works. You're buddy buddy with
- 12:05somebody, you get in their ear. And if you're influential like
- 12:09Elon Musk, of course people want to be your friend.
- 12:11They trust you because you have the track record of succeeding.
- 12:14Same with Jeff Bezos. You're a winner and people want
- 12:18to surround themselves with winners and they want to be on
- 12:20the winning team. So if they know that Jeff Bezos
- 12:24and Elon Musk can produce a product that can send people to
- 12:28the moon and Mars, of course they're going to get behind
- 12:31them. Of course Boeing, even though
- 12:35they've been leader in the aerospace industry for decades,
- 12:40the SLS program cost way too much money.
- 12:43It's it takes years to build 1 rocket.
- 12:47Elon has flown 7 rockets in the time that the SLS rocket has
- 12:51flown one now. The SLS rocket went to the moon,
- 12:56went around the moon, and came back down to Earth in the
- 12:59capsule that was on top of the rocket made that made that trip.
- 13:03Not the rocket itself, but the rocket propelled it around the
- 13:06earth, around the moon. Now Starship hasn't made it to
- 13:11orbit. Starship hasn't made it to the
- 13:12moon. Starship hasn't made it out of
- 13:15the Earth's gravitational pull. So using a Starship at this
- 13:21point, canceling SLS and using Starship alone is a little bit
- 13:25tricky considering it might not work.
- 13:28I'm not doubting the engineers of SpaceX.
- 13:32I'm not doubting Elon Musk. I'm just saying there's a
- 13:35possibility that something doesn't work out.
- 13:39They'll find they'll they'll probably figure out the
- 13:40engineering of it in the logistics of it.
- 13:44But if something doesn't work out and they throw away the SLS
- 13:48program, it's, it's a doomsday scenario for us going back to
- 13:54the OR back to the moon, from Earth and to Mars.
- 13:58But I think SpaceX can do it unless something dramatically
- 14:01happens that would cancel Starship, which I don't see it
- 14:06happening or postponing Starship.
- 14:09The only thing I can think of is an accident with the ship itself
- 14:13with the last flight when the ship blew up over the Indian
- 14:18Ocean. There's some islands that were
- 14:22scattered with debris. There were debris, like hit
- 14:25cars, hit houses, reportedly so. And we don't know if those
- 14:32reports were real because they're still investigating.
- 14:35And the FAA has to investigate all that stuff.
- 14:37So if that continues to happen, if they can't figure out the
- 14:40Starship for some reason, then, you know, in that regard, if it
- 14:47keeps having accidents, then they will, you know, FAA will
- 14:51ground the Starship until they figure out what's wrong with it.
- 14:54And the FAA historically has been on Spacex's side.
- 14:57No matter what anybody tells you, the FAA is slow to move as
- 15:02it always has been. It's a government agency.
- 15:05They usually are slow to move. But they have been working with
- 15:11SpaceX for 1213 years now, and they have the best interest of
- 15:17SpaceX at heart. So they will work with SpaceX to
- 15:20figure out flights and safety and Starship will be able to fly
- 15:25again. And they will eventually, I
- 15:29believe if this all works out, if the tanker system works out
- 15:32with SpaceX, they'll be able to dock in orbit, refuel, and then
- 15:38send people to the moon and eventually to Mars.
- 15:42And I don't see why in the future.
- 15:45SpaceX and Elon Musk has said this as well, that in a few
- 15:49years when the transfer happens, there's a possibility that
- 15:57SpaceX could just launch a Starship there.
- 16:00It's harder to see in orbit than it is to send something to
- 16:03another planet. The the physics of it to like
- 16:10stop a rocket, basically stop your momentum and it's like get
- 16:15into like the perfect orbit. It's harder to do that than
- 16:18this, to send something to another planet and catch their
- 16:20orbit, because you can catch their orbit from, you know,
- 16:24there's a little bit more leeway.
- 16:26You should be on track to do it properly.
- 16:28But you have all that time to fix things.
- 16:32And going to space, it takes, you know, a couple minutes to
- 16:36get to orbit. So, you know, you have the same
- 16:40amount of time to get into Earth's orbit or you have two
- 16:43minutes, two or three minutes to get into Earth's orbit.
- 16:46You know, because that propels you so fast.
- 16:49It takes a little bit longer than that.
- 16:50Of course, you know, I'm just saying two or three minutes
- 16:52because that's the flight time of the initial launch.
- 16:55But that's how much thrust you have until you get to orbit.
- 16:59So trying to stop all that getting to like a certain spot
- 17:02to get into orbit, incredibly difficult.
- 17:05But going flying yourself all the way to Mars takes nine
- 17:08months to get there. So how long they had?
- 17:11Nine months. You have nine months to course
- 17:13like course correct and recalculate.
- 17:17So SpaceX can figure out that tanker system, which will take
- 17:2012 to 20 refuels in orbit and then fly a Starship once it's
- 17:26docked in orbit. Once they can figure out this
- 17:28orbit thing, once it's docked in orbit, then they can send people
- 17:35to Mars. And I don't even know if the
- 17:37Artemis program is going to be changed from the moon to just
- 17:41focus on Mars. That's that's still up in the
- 17:44air too. Right now it's pretty cemented
- 17:46in then NASA will stay on the moon.
- 17:48They'll send people to the moon to live and work on the moon
- 17:52because it's our nearest neighbor.
- 17:54And it's it's a good testing ground for all the systems that
- 17:57we would need to get to Mars. But the overall huge mission is
- 18:08going to Mars. And that's what Elon and Jeff
- 18:13Bezos has been working on for have been working on for their
- 18:16whole lives, basically. Hey, thank you so much for
