- 1:00:00The Shark Whisperer is out.
- 1:00:01I watched it on Netflix.
- 1:00:02It's documentary about
- 1:00:03Ocean Ramsay and her work
- 1:00:05about interacting with sharks.
- 1:00:07Very controversial in the science
- 1:00:09and ocean conservation world.
- 1:00:10Although she captures the
- 1:00:12attention of many people.
- 1:00:13Of course, why wouldn't you
- 1:00:15when you ride a great
- 1:00:16white shark in the water?
- 1:00:18This is gonna be an
- 1:00:18interesting review of this.
- 1:00:20I already recorded an
- 1:00:21episode, it was 40 minutes long.
- 1:00:22I'm gonna try and make this less.
- 1:00:25So let's start the show.
- 1:00:26(upbeat music)
- 1:00:29Hey everybody, welcome back to another
- 1:00:30exciting episode of the How
- 1:00:31to Protect the Ocean podcast.
- 1:00:32I'm your host Andrew Lewin.
- 1:00:33And this is the podcast where you find
- 1:00:34out what's happening with the ocean.
- 1:00:35How you could speak up for the ocean.
- 1:00:37What you can do to live for a better
- 1:00:38ocean by taking action.
- 1:00:40If action is what you want to take before
- 1:00:42we get into the Shark Whisperer and Ocean
- 1:00:44Ramsay and all that.
- 1:00:46If you want to take real action, you want
- 1:00:47to know how to protect the ocean.
- 1:00:49Join the undertow to join this online
- 1:00:52community that I'm creating
- 1:00:53with two other co-founders.
- 1:00:54These amazing women who are
- 1:00:56out there trying to do best.
- 1:00:58We are trying to help guide you to choose
- 1:01:01better ways to protect the ocean.
- 1:01:04If you don't know, you can learn about
- 1:01:06the ocean in this community.
- 1:01:08You can learn about how to protect the
- 1:01:09ocean better in this community.
- 1:01:11Just go to speakupforblue.com forward
- 1:01:13slash join the undertow.
- 1:01:15That's speakupforblue.com forward slash
- 1:01:17join the undertow to join the undertow
- 1:01:19and do better at conservation.
- 1:01:21So that's what I want you to do right
- 1:01:22before we start this.
- 1:01:24Now let's get into it.
- 1:01:25Okay, I recorded this episode before and
- 1:01:28it was 40 minutes long.
- 1:01:29Did not want to do that to you.
- 1:01:30I know attention spans are short.
- 1:01:32We have lots to do.
- 1:01:34I want you to take this
- 1:01:35episode for what it's worth.
- 1:01:36It is a documentary about a woman who
- 1:01:39interacts with sharks in a bad way.
- 1:01:41I'm going to tell you that's a bad way.
- 1:01:42She doesn't mean to do in a
- 1:01:43bad way, but it's a bad way.
- 1:01:45She harasses sharks.
- 1:01:47It's what she does
- 1:01:48and it's shown on video.
- 1:01:50I don't mean to degrade her in any way.
- 1:01:52I don't mean to be mean to her in any
- 1:01:54way, but it's what she does.
- 1:01:56And so this has been a topic of a lot of
- 1:01:59controversy within the ocean science and
- 1:02:01an ocean conservation world.
- 1:02:02A lot of people have spoken
- 1:02:03out about the work that she does.
- 1:02:05But the thing is that it
- 1:02:06captures a lot of attention.
- 1:02:07They take amazing photos of her
- 1:02:08interacting with these sharks touching
- 1:02:10the sharks pushing them away interacting
- 1:02:12with these sharks and she
- 1:02:14puts out some misinformation.
- 1:02:15So we're going to get into the
- 1:02:16documentary what it's about and what are
- 1:02:19the problems I have with it really in
- 1:02:21terms of it and then some of the things
- 1:02:22that I think we need to learn as ocean
- 1:02:24conservationists and scientists to say,
- 1:02:27hey, we need to start capturing the
- 1:02:28attention of people and we
- 1:02:29need to figure out ways to do it.
- 1:02:30That is in a good way and also some
- 1:02:32advice for Netflix and
- 1:02:33who to actually cover.
- 1:02:35So we're going to talk
- 1:02:35about that all today.
- 1:02:36So let's get into it.
- 1:02:37The movie is about Ocean Ramsey.
- 1:02:38Ocean Ramsey claims to be a scientist
- 1:02:41claims to be a researcher
- 1:02:42claims to be a shark whisperer.
- 1:02:45Although she says she's not a shark
- 1:02:46whisperer in the movie, but the movie
- 1:02:47says, you know, title is shark whisperer.
- 1:02:50But essentially what she's done is she's
- 1:02:51created this company where she goes out
- 1:02:54and she teaches people
- 1:02:55how to interact with sharks.
- 1:02:56She wants to show that sharks are gentle.
- 1:02:58She wants to show that sharks are not
- 1:03:00monsters as some movies like Jaws may
- 1:03:02have represented in the past and some
- 1:03:04people have represented
- 1:03:05people are afraid of sharks.
- 1:03:06That is not a doubt.
- 1:03:07Everybody there are a lot of people who
- 1:03:09are afraid of sharks.
- 1:03:10People know that
- 1:03:10everybody knows that it's fine.
- 1:03:12There's nothing wrong with that.
- 1:03:13They are predators.
- 1:03:14They have big teeth.
- 1:03:15They have bitten people before.
- 1:03:17It doesn't happen as often
- 1:03:18as we think, but it happens.
- 1:03:19And when you go in the water, all you
- 1:03:21think of is Jaws or all you think of are
- 1:03:23these different types of movies about
- 1:03:24sharks eating people or hurting people
- 1:03:26and it happens in real life at times.
- 1:03:28And unfortunately, you know, they get a
- 1:03:30bad rap because of it.
- 1:03:31So people are afraid of sharks.
- 1:03:32That fear of sharks has led to the
- 1:03:35killing of sharks, whether it's for
- 1:03:37fishing or for
- 1:03:38tournaments or for anything else.
- 1:03:40And sometimes, you know,
- 1:03:42people get mad at that.
- 1:03:43And sometimes people are like, well, we
- 1:03:44need to change the reputation of sharks.
- 1:03:46Those people go out and
- 1:03:47do it in different ways.
- 1:03:48Some people will swim with sharks, not
- 1:03:49touch them and do what, you know, Patty
- 1:03:51says and what all the scuba diving
- 1:03:53outfits say and say when you're in the
- 1:03:54water, you just look, you don't touch.
- 1:03:56That's pretty much what the mantra is
- 1:03:58when you're in the water, what you should
- 1:03:59be doing, whether you're a scientist or
- 1:04:01not, unless you're actually
- 1:04:02doing work up on the animal.
- 1:04:04You do not touch if you don't need to.
- 1:04:06Ocean Ramsey touches.
- 1:04:07She has this connection, she says in this
- 1:04:09movie, and that's what allows her to
- 1:04:12interact with these animals.
- 1:04:13Now, here's the thing. She anthropomorphizes these animals.
- 1:04:18Basically, what she's doing, what that
- 1:04:19means is she's attributing human
- 1:04:21characteristics to animals where those
- 1:04:23human characteristics
- 1:04:24are probably not true.
- 1:04:26She says she has this
- 1:04:27connection with the animals.
- 1:04:28She knows the animals and they all have
- 1:04:30different characteristics, like they all
- 1:04:31have their character.
- 1:04:32They all act in different ways.
- 1:04:33Each individual shark, whether it's a
- 1:04:35tiger shark, whether it's an ocean white
- 1:04:36tip, each individual shark of that
- 1:04:38population of that area will display
- 1:04:40different types of characteristics.
- 1:04:42That's not in doubt here.
- 1:04:42It's whether they're being friendly or
- 1:04:45whether they're coming to say hello or
- 1:04:46whether they're doing things.
- 1:04:47These are animals. These are predators.
- 1:04:49They're coming to check you out.
- 1:04:50If a shark approaches you, it's checking
- 1:04:52you out to say, one, are you food? And
- 1:04:54two, are you dangerous to me?
- 1:04:56If you're dangerous to me, I'm going to
- 1:04:57get out. If you're food, I'm going to
- 1:04:58come check you out even more.
- 1:05:00And so you see a lot of times in the
- 1:05:02film, you see, you know, a tiger shark
- 1:05:04coming up to Ocean Ramsey.
- 1:05:05She puts her hand out. She says, I'm only
- 1:05:07waiting until they come to me.
- 1:05:08Although there's other shots in the video
- 1:05:11where she's actually touching their fins
- 1:05:12and things like that.
- 1:05:13And there's a shot where a great white
- 1:05:15came by what everybody
- 1:05:16thought was deep blue.
- 1:05:17Apparently it's not deep blue. The name
- 1:05:19of the shark was a 20 foot
- 1:05:20great white shark. It's huge.
- 1:05:21And that's what made her popular. She
- 1:05:23rode this thing. She held onto its fin
- 1:05:25and rode it basically swimming within.
- 1:05:27Let it kind of drag her around in a very
- 1:05:29peaceful way. And it went viral.
- 1:05:31And she claims a lot of things from that.
- 1:05:32But, you know, that's what happens. She
- 1:05:33rides them. She holds onto their fins.
- 1:05:35She essentially harasses them. You should
- 1:05:38never touch a shark. You never know what
- 1:05:39you're going to do that shark.
- 1:05:40You never know what's on your hands. You
- 1:05:42never know what's on the
- 1:05:42sharks, you know, skin.
- 1:05:44There's a lot of dangers that can happen.
- 1:05:45And plus you don't want to piss off a
- 1:05:47shark. Now, she has gone diving with
- 1:05:49sharks for a long time.
- 1:05:50She probably has thousands and thousands
- 1:05:51of hours with sharks in this atmosphere.
- 1:05:55But the problem is, is that you never
- 1:05:58know when a shark is going to turn on
- 1:05:59you. For example, there is a shark that's
- 1:06:01in the film where she says she has to watch her at all times.
- 1:06:02Because this shark will come up. And
- 1:06:05normally when she pushes them away, a
- 1:06:07tiger shark will actually take a long
- 1:06:09route and come back around and then come
- 1:06:11visit her again by checking her out to
- 1:06:13see if she's actually food.
- 1:06:14But this one will come back and turn back
- 1:06:16around quick and she has to be careful of
- 1:06:17that. This is the thing where I'm saying
- 1:06:19it's not games these sharks are playing.
- 1:06:21These sharks are out there to survive.
- 1:06:23They're out there either to protect
- 1:06:25themselves or to eat.
- 1:06:26That's what they do.
- 1:06:26That's the animal kingdom. That's what
- 1:06:28happens. Mother Nature is cruel. These
- 1:06:30animals have to be just as cruel and
- 1:06:32that's how it works. Right. So this is
- 1:06:35what we're dealing with from a
- 1:06:36perspective. However, the movie makes it
- 1:06:39sound like she's just
- 1:06:40this shark whisperer.
- 1:06:41She has this ability to connect with
- 1:06:43sharks and the sharks connect with her
- 1:06:45and it feels just so spiritual and it
- 1:06:47feels just great. It's all BS, but it's
- 1:06:49easy to fall for it. It is.
- 1:06:50And when I watched it, I was like, oh
- 1:06:51wow, like she really does a good job with
- 1:06:54all of these sharks and things like that.
- 1:06:55You fall for it. It's really easy to fall
- 1:06:57for because it's a beautiful depiction of
- 1:06:59how animals and humans can interact. And
- 1:07:02I do believe that she has, you know, a
- 1:07:04want to protect these sharks. She sees
- 1:07:06these sharks every day when you start to
- 1:07:08grow a or not every day, but most of the
- 1:07:10days when every time she's out there, she
- 1:07:12sees the same sharks come back. You know,
- 1:07:13there was one shark that had a crack jaw
- 1:07:16or broken jaw and it's sad.
- 1:07:17Then it had a fish hook in it and there's
- 1:07:19a lot of things that were going on. The
- 1:07:21problem is, is she's still harassing
- 1:07:22sharks. She teaches other people that you
- 1:07:25can harass sharks and get away with it
- 1:07:26and you can't. You just don't want to do
- 1:07:28that because yes, she has thousands and
- 1:07:30thousands of hours in
- 1:07:30the water with sharks.
- 1:07:32But other people who don't are going to
- 1:07:33try this. Not everybody because a lot of
- 1:07:34us are like, I'm not getting in the water
- 1:07:36with sharks without a cage or even just
- 1:07:38getting the water with sharks anyway. But
- 1:07:40there are people who will and there are
- 1:07:42people who will try this tactic, whether
- 1:07:44it's a great white, whether it's a tiger
- 1:07:45shark, whether it's a
- 1:07:46Mako shark, any shark.
- 1:07:46They will do that and they will get hurt
- 1:07:50because of it. And that is dangerous
- 1:07:52because what does that do? Not only to
- 1:07:53the person hurt the person, but it could
- 1:07:55also hurt the reputation of sharks. And
- 1:07:57that is what we don't want. We've taken a
- 1:07:59lot of time. There's a lot of people who
- 1:08:00have taken a lot of time to make sure
- 1:08:02that these sharks have better reputation,
- 1:08:04that they're known as being these
- 1:08:05formidable animals and predators, apex
- 1:08:07predators, but they need to be protected
- 1:08:09and that they're not always after humans.
- 1:08:11There have been plenty
- 1:08:12of studies to show that.
- 1:08:12Dr. Chris Lowe out of the University of
- 1:08:16California, Long Beach lab, the shark
- 1:08:17lab, and it shows it every day. So that's
- 1:08:20something that's really important to look
- 1:08:21at. Look at the science. Don't just look
- 1:08:23at people who are just touching sharks
- 1:08:24and getting away with it because I'll
- 1:08:25tell you at some point she's going to get
- 1:08:28hurt. She even says that it could happen
- 1:08:29and that she's okay with it. I'm not okay
- 1:08:32with somebody getting hurt. People
- 1:08:33watching it or filming it. And also, you
- 1:08:36know, that reputation of sharks going
- 1:08:37downhill. Let's be honest. The crocodile
- 1:08:39hunter had the same kind of thing. Got
- 1:08:41killed by a stingray.
- 1:08:41An accident and you know he doesn't want
- 1:08:44anything happened to stingrays, but
- 1:08:46people are afraid of stingrays because it
- 1:08:48hit the crocodile hunter that it could
- 1:08:49hit anybody if people are afraid, but not
- 1:08:51going to want to protect and we need all
- 1:08:53hands on deck to protect. That's what we
- 1:08:55need. Okay, enough on that. I got a lot
- 1:08:57of other stuff to go through. So I'm
- 1:08:59going to go through that and I'm already
- 1:09:00at like 13 minutes. So I've got like a
- 1:09:02couple minutes to try and keep everything
- 1:09:04down to a good thing. So hopefully my
- 1:09:07editor will be able to edit this down so
- 1:09:09that you can go and get a good timing and get back on to your own.
- 1:09:10Okay, let's talk about the conservation
- 1:09:13efforts. The one story that really
- 1:09:15captured my attention was the
- 1:09:17conservation effort that she talks about
- 1:09:19a banning sharks in Hawaii, the banning
- 1:09:21of shark fishing in Hawaii. Now she talks
- 1:09:23a lot about conservation efforts about,
- 1:09:27you know, finning. She talks about
- 1:09:27banning finning and how, you know, 100
- 1:09:29million sharks die every day. We know the
- 1:09:32deaths of sharks from finning is going
- 1:09:34down since it was first reported. But
- 1:09:36there are other ways that sharks die. A
- 1:09:38lot is overfishing and unsustainable.
- 1:09:39Fishing practices and not, you know,
- 1:09:43watching them out in the high seas and so
- 1:09:44forth. There's a lot of stuff that is
- 1:09:45killing sharks and still a lot of sharks
- 1:09:47die each and every day shark fishing can
- 1:09:49be a problem. There are ways that, you
- 1:09:52know, sustainable shark fishing can
- 1:09:53happen. But what she refers to one thing
- 1:09:55before we get into the story of how she
- 1:09:57protected or how she helped get shark
- 1:09:59fishing banned in Hawaii was the fact
- 1:10:02that she talked about fitting and she
- 1:10:04talked about finning.
- 1:10:04She has B roll of her walking around what
- 1:10:07seemed to be in an Asian fishing market
- 1:10:09She sees sharks these dead sharks and
- 1:10:11fins being cut off of these dead sharks
- 1:10:12Now that is technically not finning that
- 1:10:15is taking the fins off of a dead shark
- 1:10:17That is actually very legal in a lot of
- 1:10:19places not illegal
- 1:10:20legal in a lot of places
- 1:10:21If you land the shark, that means you
- 1:10:23bring it back dead you fish the shark
- 1:10:25You're gonna sell it for its meat. You
- 1:10:27can also sell the fins because you want
- 1:10:29to use up the entire body
- 1:10:30That's a sustainable practice and use of
- 1:10:32a shark is if you're gonna fish it and if
- 1:10:33you don't agree with it
- 1:10:34That's fine. But if you're gonna fish it
- 1:10:36you should eat all of it
- 1:10:38So taking the fins make sense in that
- 1:10:40perspective the act of
- 1:10:41finning is to go out into the ocean
- 1:10:44Right middle the ocean or wherever you
- 1:10:45are on the coast wherever and actually
- 1:10:47catch a shark keep it alive
- 1:10:49Cut the fins off the shark while it's
- 1:10:51alive and then throw the shark back while
- 1:10:54it's still alive without its fins
- 1:10:55For it to essentially just die a very
- 1:10:57very painful death. That is cruel
- 1:11:00That is awful. And I know
- 1:11:01some of you will argue that
- 1:11:02Hey, you know what killing a shark just
- 1:11:05for fishing and different meat is cruel
- 1:11:07in itself. I understand that that is
- 1:11:09legal in a lot of places
- 1:11:10What's illegal is the act of finning
- 1:11:12which I just described?
- 1:11:13There's meaning in the different words
- 1:11:15and she misrepresents
- 1:11:16what finning is in this film
- 1:11:18She's done that before and that matters
- 1:11:21to a lot of ocean conservationists to a
- 1:11:23lot of scientists and
- 1:11:24it should matter to you
- 1:11:24Because that's actually legal
- 1:11:25That's actually using the shark when you
- 1:11:28land it and cut the fins
- 1:11:29off to use it for shark fins
- 1:11:30That's actually a sustainable way because
- 1:11:32you want to use all of the animal, right?
- 1:11:34That's a very good way of making sure
- 1:11:36that we're sustainable
- 1:11:36if we are going to fish
- 1:11:38For a particular species a shark a
- 1:11:40different type of fish, whatever that is
- 1:11:42You want to use all of it so that makes
- 1:11:43it worthwhile, right?
- 1:11:45That's a very big act when you eat
- 1:11:47animals is to use all of its parts
- 1:11:49So that's one of the things that you
- 1:11:51know, and you may not
- 1:11:52agree and that's fine
- 1:11:53But that's one of the things that I had a
- 1:11:55particularly caught my eye and be like
- 1:11:56well, hold on a second
- 1:11:57That's not actually finning now with her
- 1:11:59banning of shark fishing within Hawaii
- 1:12:02Admirable act she'd
- 1:12:04played a role in it. She
- 1:12:06partnered up with some other organization
- 1:12:08There was an organization and a people
- 1:12:10called Hanaka and it was led by this
- 1:12:12whole movement was led by Hanaka
- 1:12:14And I've got a video to document someone
- 1:12:16telling you that it was Mackenzie who's
- 1:12:19on tick-tock who's been
- 1:12:20on this podcast before
- 1:12:21She's great. She's a scientist
- 1:12:23She's a very great ocean conservationist
- 1:12:25and she's a great science communicator
- 1:12:26And she is from the island of Hawaii in
- 1:12:29Oahu and she knows a lot about that
- 1:12:31And she talks a little bit
- 1:12:32more than I know about her
- 1:12:33So I'll let her talk about that aspect,
- 1:12:35but this was a Hanaka led
- 1:12:37I guess conservation movement and it
- 1:12:39worked now she coupled into it
- 1:12:41She came into the team as a team and she
- 1:12:44used her following to get public support
- 1:12:46She also goes around to schools and other
- 1:12:49places and communities and teaches about
- 1:12:51sharks and what her work does
- 1:12:52So that's great. That's admirable. And
- 1:12:54she was part of that team
- 1:12:55This film this documentary makes it look
- 1:12:58like she led the whole thing in the film
- 1:13:01She said that she didn't get it the
- 1:13:03building get passed in
- 1:13:042016 nor in 2017 nor in 2018
- 1:13:06It wasn't until 2019 after the video came
- 1:13:08out of her swimming
- 1:13:09with the great white shark
- 1:13:10That's what she says. She attributes the
- 1:13:13fact that hey, you know what?
- 1:13:14That's what kind of put it over the hump
- 1:13:16and got it passed because there wasn't
- 1:13:17much opposition of
- 1:13:18that because if you swim
- 1:13:19With a great white and you're not getting
- 1:13:20eaten then sharks can't be that bad. We
- 1:13:22shouldn't be fishing for sharks
- 1:13:24That's what she claims
- 1:13:25in the film essentially
- 1:13:26But the thing is is when you try and get
- 1:13:28policy passed it doesn't
- 1:13:30always happen at the beginning
- 1:13:31Right doesn't always happen the first
- 1:13:32year the second year the third year
- 1:13:33Sometimes doesn't happen for 10 years the
- 1:13:35Ross Sea Marine
- 1:13:36protected area in Antarctica
- 1:13:37Took over 10 years to get accepted by 24
- 1:13:41nations that manage Antarctica
- 1:13:42It finally got accepted because you know
- 1:13:45the science gets better the
- 1:13:47public support gets better
- 1:13:48And there's a lot of pressure on all
- 1:13:50those countries from their
- 1:13:51own people and internationally
- 1:14:16To have these marine protected areas designated now There are of course other and repre And that's what makes it so
- 1:14:18frustrating with conservation
- 1:14:19It just takes so much time and a lot of
- 1:14:21these animals are dying in the meantime
- 1:14:22But I'm sure her followers and her public
- 1:14:25support in the gathering of public
- 1:14:26support and her persona
- 1:14:27herself helped get this passed
- 1:14:29But the fact is the movie whether she
- 1:14:32means it or not is taking credit for it
- 1:14:34Puts a bad taste in everybody's mouth
- 1:14:35because ocean
- 1:14:36conservation is about collaboration
- 1:14:39It's about working together as a team
- 1:14:41There are people that I know who have
- 1:14:43done amazing things in ocean conservation
- 1:14:46helped get marine protected areas
- 1:14:47designated helped get certain CITES
- 1:14:51regulations designated
- 1:14:52Do they take credit for it or do they let
- 1:14:55other people say hey
- 1:14:56this person did this?
- 1:14:58No, they will be the first to say no
- 1:15:00actually I worked with this organization
- 1:15:02and this organization did
- 1:15:03this part in this process
- 1:15:05And everybody gives credit to everybody
- 1:15:06doesn't happen all the time
- 1:15:08But when it happens that's when you know
- 1:15:09the true collaboration is in effect
- 1:15:12That's when you know that this person is
- 1:15:13admirable this person
- 1:15:15Deserves to be in this area because they
- 1:15:17just want to get the stuff passed and
- 1:15:19protected and not take
- 1:15:21credit for it even though
- 1:15:22Credits do to them right, but now they
- 1:15:24don't want to take all the credit
- 1:15:25They want to say hey, you know what other
- 1:15:26people, you know help get this passed
- 1:15:28So that is a big problem and I know maybe
- 1:15:31that you're listening to this and you're
- 1:15:32a supporter of ocean rams
- 1:15:33And you see well, you know what she's
- 1:15:35helped anyway, so isn't that great?
- 1:15:36It is great
- 1:15:37But to take credit for it in this film or
- 1:15:39what seems to be taking
- 1:15:41credit for this she led this
- 1:15:43Really puts a sour taste in a lot of
- 1:15:45people's mouths that have worked so hard
- 1:15:47to put it through now with that said I
- 1:15:50Haven't come across anybody speaking out
- 1:15:51against it in that thing
- 1:15:53That doesn't mean that anybody hasn't but
- 1:15:55I haven't seen any reports or any
- 1:15:57articles where people are speaking out
- 1:15:58against it and that's fine
- 1:16:01Maybe they did maybe they didn't what I
- 1:16:03see is one person taking
- 1:16:04credit that leading this
- 1:16:05I know differently and that puts a sour
- 1:16:08taste in my mouth with this
- 1:16:09I wouldn't work with somebody like that
- 1:16:11because of it, right?
- 1:16:12Whether she has two million followers or
- 1:16:14two followers that puts
- 1:16:15a sour taste in my mouth
- 1:16:16So I think that's thing is it's
- 1:16:18transparency. It's
- 1:16:18like hey, you know what?
- 1:16:19We got this pass was great, but it was a
- 1:16:21team effort that
- 1:16:21didn't show off in the movie
- 1:16:23It looked like she led that speaking of
- 1:16:25transparency ocean ramsi's education now
- 1:16:28Look, you don't have to be a scientist to
- 1:16:30do this type of work, you know
- 1:16:31You don't have to be a scientist you can
- 1:16:33be an advocate you can be an activist
- 1:16:36You can be someone who works in policy
- 1:16:38and gets into these types of situation
- 1:16:41gets public support and do really great
- 1:16:43work for ocean conservation
- 1:16:44But ocean ramsi has
- 1:16:45claimed that she is a scientist
- 1:16:47However, there's something very different
- 1:16:49about her claims compared to what she's
- 1:16:52proven or what she's shown
- 1:16:53of where she's gone to school
- 1:16:54And how she got her credentials
- 1:16:57She may have schooling and she may have
- 1:16:58credentials and she may choose not to
- 1:17:00post it on a website
- 1:17:02But she is the first scientist that I
- 1:17:03have ever met who has not posted their
- 1:17:05credentials or talked
- 1:17:06about their credentials
- 1:17:07And that is a little weird to me. I'll be
- 1:17:10honest and it's not against
- 1:17:11it if she has it that's fine
- 1:17:13But it's causing a lot of controversy
- 1:17:15within the scientific community ocean
- 1:17:17conservation committees
- 1:17:17Like she says she's a scientist
- 1:17:19She says she practices science and you
- 1:17:20can collect data for a lot of different
- 1:17:22researchers and stuff
- 1:17:23that happens all the time
- 1:17:23And you're not a scientist, but she
- 1:17:25claims she's a scientist, but she doesn't
- 1:17:26talk about being a scientist
- 1:17:27She doesn't they not proudly display it
- 1:17:30on her website or anything like that
- 1:17:31And I feel like that's
- 1:17:32a little odd, you know
- 1:17:33You want to be transparent you say you
- 1:17:34should be proud if she did the work
- 1:17:36It's hard work and she should be proud of
- 1:17:38what she's done, but
- 1:17:38don't claim it and not show it
- 1:17:40I think that's a little weird. It's not
- 1:17:42like the end all be all but it's a little
- 1:17:44odd that she's not claiming it
- 1:17:46There are people who said that she's gone
- 1:17:48to San Diego State University. She's got
- 1:17:50a marine biology degree
- 1:17:51She got a degree in a master's in animal
- 1:17:52behavior. I haven't
- 1:17:53seen it on her website
- 1:17:54I haven't seen her cut that and actually
- 1:17:55say it she's very
- 1:17:56mysterious in that kind of way
- 1:17:58She doesn't talk about
- 1:17:59herself a lot within that respect
- 1:18:01She only talks about herself within like
- 1:18:02saving sharks as well as
- 1:18:04interacting with these sharks
- 1:18:05So that's a little odd to me. Like I
- 1:18:07said, I'm very proud of that. I have an
- 1:18:08undergraduate degree
- 1:18:09I have a master's
- 1:18:10degree. I work very hard for it
- 1:18:11It was not easy talk to anybody who's
- 1:18:13done a graduate degree. It is sucks. It's
- 1:18:15hard. It is very difficult
- 1:18:17So if you have it flaunt it and you don't
- 1:18:20have to like I said, it's not the end all
- 1:18:22be all but it's a little odd to
- 1:18:23Me that she's not proudly displaying it
- 1:18:26or proudly talking about it as she should
- 1:18:27be because it is a very
- 1:18:29difficult thing to get
- 1:18:30It's not easy to get
- 1:18:31so that's a big thing
- 1:18:32I want to talk about going back to the
- 1:18:34interaction when you have cage free dives
- 1:18:37and you have cage dives a lot of times
- 1:18:40You know, you have to attract the sharks
- 1:18:42people attract the sharks using chumming
- 1:18:44or sometimes they use hand feeding
- 1:18:45Which is kind of crazy when you think
- 1:18:46about feeding sharks
- 1:18:47But a lot of people do it and that's how
- 1:18:49they attract the sharks chumming and hand
- 1:18:51feeding Ocean Ramsey
- 1:18:53says she doesn't do it
- 1:18:54And there's no physical evidence that
- 1:18:56says she does it at
- 1:18:57this point that I could see
- 1:18:59However, there have been people and I'll
- 1:19:01link to the video below who have said
- 1:19:02that she does chum water
- 1:19:03that they know people who say
- 1:19:05That she chums with the water to attract
- 1:19:07those sharks. She says she doesn't
- 1:19:10There have been apparently videos shows
- 1:19:12that there's chum in the water that have
- 1:19:14been taken down from social media posts
- 1:19:15Nobody that has worked for her is allowed
- 1:19:18to talk about it
- 1:19:19because they've all signed
- 1:19:20NDAs and they refuse to talk about it
- 1:19:22because they can't
- 1:19:22because they legally can't
- 1:19:24Again, the mystery around it whether it's
- 1:19:25true or not. I don't
- 1:19:26know the mystery around it
- 1:19:28She says she doesn't do it
- 1:19:29But there's you know, some people say she
- 1:19:31does and there's been some photos that
- 1:19:33have been shown online of some, you know
- 1:19:35Sometimes she's been hand feeding and
- 1:19:36she's taking those down whether that's
- 1:19:38just a once in a
- 1:19:39lifetime thing or I don't know
- 1:19:41Sometimes you can learn from that, but
- 1:19:42she says she's never done it
- 1:19:43She doesn't do it. And so that's a little
- 1:19:45weird to me again. It comes down to the
- 1:19:47transparency of the thing
- 1:19:49So I think that's difficult now. Let's
- 1:19:50talk about the fact
- 1:19:51that she's an influencer
- 1:19:52She's a big influencer
- 1:19:53within the ocean space
- 1:19:54She has over 2 million followers on
- 1:19:56Instagram and other places and a lot of
- 1:19:58people love what she does people have
- 1:20:00watched this movie and they
- 1:20:01Love what she does. They think she is
- 1:20:03amazing. That's great. They don't know
- 1:20:06it's very difficult to know
- 1:20:07She doesn't talk about a lot of the
- 1:20:08controversies. She lets it ride
- 1:20:10She talks about the
- 1:20:10controversies in the film
- 1:20:12But it doesn't make it
- 1:20:13look like that big of a deal
- 1:20:14There looks like there's some researchers
- 1:20:15who are on the film who don't agree with
- 1:20:17what she does and they talk about that
- 1:20:18So it kind of like when I watch I was
- 1:20:19like, oh, she's actually,
- 1:20:20you know facing it head-on
- 1:20:21She's talking about it. She just ignores
- 1:20:23it and she just does what she does
- 1:20:25But there's still like
- 1:20:26something weird about it
- 1:20:27It just didn't sit right with me
- 1:20:29But she does have a lot of followers and
- 1:20:31those followers have gone after other
- 1:20:33researchers and ocean
- 1:20:35scientists and ocean conservation
- 1:20:36Who have spoken out and criticized her
- 1:20:38for what she does that
- 1:20:40is obviously not good now
- 1:20:41I don't know if she
- 1:20:42says to go out and do it
- 1:20:43But the fact is I feel as an influencer
- 1:20:44you have that responsibility to kind of
- 1:20:46go online is like hey
- 1:20:47people if people criticize me
- 1:20:48That's fine as part of the job
- 1:20:50Please don't go after and you know
- 1:20:52threaten their lives or this and that and
- 1:20:53blah blah blah which has happened
- 1:20:55And so, you know when you have a
- 1:20:57following like that and people love you
- 1:20:58They defend you but it can get aggressive
- 1:21:00it can get scary and
- 1:21:01that's not good with that
- 1:21:03Said having a following is a really great
- 1:21:05thing for conservation, right?
- 1:21:07You saw it as an example in the film
- 1:21:09She talks about you know, basically
- 1:21:11inspire her followers to support this
- 1:21:14movement to ban shark
- 1:21:16fishing within Hawaii
- 1:21:17Is it huge was gonna save sharks around
- 1:21:19the world? No, but it's gonna
- 1:21:20save sharks in Hawaii for sure
- 1:21:21But you know, it's great to have that
- 1:21:24it's great to have that
- 1:21:25Unfortunately, it's with probably the
- 1:21:28wrong person that can do it for
- 1:21:30conservation because she
- 1:21:31often provides misinformation
- 1:21:32Like I said with the finning she
- 1:21:34interacts with sharks, which is not good
- 1:21:36She teaches people that you can't
- 1:21:37interact with sharks
- 1:21:38You should interact with sharks and that
- 1:21:39can be very dangerous for the sharks as
- 1:21:41well as for the people, you know
- 1:21:43There's a lot of
- 1:21:43controversy here. So why is it?
- 1:21:45I always wonder, you know, like why is it
- 1:21:46that a lot of people who have followings?
- 1:21:49Tend to do some like controversial things
- 1:21:50and maybe that's why they have
- 1:21:52followings. Maybe
- 1:21:52that's why Netflix is like
- 1:21:53Hey, let's do a documentary on this
- 1:21:55person because it's gonna drum up some
- 1:21:58controversy just like sea-spiracy did
- 1:22:00It's gonna drum up some support because
- 1:22:02they have a big following and we'll get a
- 1:22:04lot of views and that's
- 1:22:05really what it comes out
- 1:22:05So they want to make money. They want
- 1:22:06people to come to Netflix
- 1:22:07and they want to watch it
- 1:22:09I would just like to see
- 1:22:10other people get the spotlight
- 1:22:12People who have done great work people
- 1:22:14who are great people
- 1:22:15People who want to work with others and
- 1:22:17collaborate and do conservation the right
- 1:22:20way and should get the
- 1:22:21spotlight in front of an audience
- 1:22:23That has a Netflix type of audience, you
- 1:22:25know what I would like to see
- 1:22:26I like to see dr
- 1:22:27Asha Davos who's a marine mammologist out
- 1:22:30of Sri Lanka who discovered the only
- 1:22:32population that I think
- 1:22:33we know that to this day
- 1:22:35I don't know if that's true
- 1:22:36But the only blue whale population that
- 1:22:38doesn't migrate north or south and stays
- 1:22:40within the Sri Lankan waters and worked
- 1:22:42with the government as a woman
- 1:22:43in Sri Lanka worked with
- 1:22:44the government of Sri Lanka to
- 1:22:47Reroute one of the largest ports in the
- 1:22:49Indian Ocean so that they didn't harm
- 1:22:52blue whales and other whales in the area
- 1:22:54Like think about what that does a woman
- 1:22:56in Sri Lanka one woman Sri Lanka
- 1:22:58used her ability to do science and
- 1:23:02conservation and her speaking ability and
- 1:23:04her ability to inspire people to get a
- 1:23:07government who probably doesn't really
- 1:23:09treat women the best
- 1:23:10to change and reroute the shipping lanes
- 1:23:13of a port of one of the largest ports if
- 1:23:15not the largest port in
- 1:23:16in the Indian Ocean and
- 1:23:18She speaks all over the world to inspire
- 1:23:19people all over the world put a show on
- 1:23:21her do an entire documentary on her
- 1:23:23She's amazing. She's a good friend of
- 1:23:24mine. So I'm biased. She's amazing. Well,
- 1:23:27how would you just do that?
- 1:23:27Dr. Asher Davos look her up watch what
- 1:23:30she does. She does live streaming a lot
- 1:23:32of times with her marine mammal G
- 1:23:33Surveys and so forth. She talks about
- 1:23:35whale poop, which is
- 1:23:36fluorescent orange. It's amazing
- 1:23:38You got to do a documentary on Netflix
- 1:23:39about her or a good friend of mine Angelo
- 1:23:42Villa Gomez do a documentary on him
- 1:23:44That guy is an amazing guy. He's like a
- 1:23:46brother to me. He is so much fun to talk
- 1:23:48to he is so interesting
- 1:23:49He's got an interesting history, right?
- 1:23:51He stands up for people
- 1:23:53He does conservation work and he gives
- 1:23:55people credit for what they do and takes
- 1:23:58away credit from him
- 1:23:58Even though he deserves most of the
- 1:24:00credit or a lot of the
- 1:24:01credit, but he won't do it himself
- 1:24:02He's very humble that way do these
- 1:24:04documentaries. That's what I want to see
- 1:24:06I want to see people who have done great
- 1:24:08work in the ocean
- 1:24:08conservation have a great story
- 1:24:10It's time that we start elevating people
- 1:24:12who can really command
- 1:24:14and inspire an audience
- 1:24:15But they need to get in
- 1:24:16front of that audience
- 1:24:17These are the people that these
- 1:24:18documentaries need to be made. I would
- 1:24:21love to make them myself
- 1:24:22I don't have the ability to do so, but
- 1:24:24these are the people that I would choose
- 1:24:25These are just two of the people that I
- 1:24:26would choose. There are so
- 1:24:27many more now with that said
- 1:24:29I can't wait for another Netflix
- 1:24:31especially comes out as I'm recording
- 1:24:33this it comes up tomorrow
- 1:24:34There is a woman in there that I've had
- 1:24:36on the podcast. She's amazing
- 1:24:38I'm not gonna talk about too much of her
- 1:24:39right now. She's on this new shark
- 1:24:42You know, it looks like a reality show
- 1:24:44from what I see and they're taking
- 1:24:46pictures and they're trying
- 1:24:46to get pictures of as many
- 1:24:47Different shark species as possible. It
- 1:24:50looks great. She's a scientist. She just
- 1:24:52graduated from master's degree. She's a
- 1:24:53science communicator
- 1:24:54She's underwater photographer
- 1:24:55She's amazing and I can't wait to watch
- 1:24:57that and I can't wait to review that and
- 1:24:59have her on the podcast to promote
- 1:25:00That these are the people that we should
- 1:25:02be, you know focusing on
- 1:25:03These are the people that we need to
- 1:25:04elevate and I can't wait and the other
- 1:25:06people who are on the show with her
- 1:25:07I can't wait to get to know them
- 1:25:09These are some of the great things that
- 1:25:10we should do and I want people to watch
- 1:25:12the show to really say
- 1:25:14Hey, we need to support shows like this
- 1:25:16on Netflix and not support too much of
- 1:25:19shows like we see in
- 1:25:20Ocean Ramses taking credit
- 1:25:21Spreading misinformation talking about
- 1:25:23wildlife harassment. It's not great,
- 1:25:25right showing why life rasa. It's not
- 1:25:27great. This is my episode
